DHARUMAVANTHA RASGEFAANU MOSQUE
Dharumavantha Rasgefaanu Mosque in Male is the oldest existing mosque in the Maldives, attributed to Muhammed-ul-Adil, the first Sultan of Maldives. Located between Sultan Park and Muliaage, it is a one-room structure measuring approximately 13 x 6.6 meters with a covered verandah and an internal well for ablution. The stone walls have been plastered and whitewashed, and the wooden ceiling features one central dome and four smaller domes, supported by carved and decorated wooden pillars and beams. Assembled without nails, the mosque originally had a thatched roof, replaced by corrugated iron sheets after renovations, including a significant one in 1925. Despite renovations, many original features remain, making the mosque significant to the Maldivian people.

Kandooma Maldives ‘DIVE FREE’ Major Success
In August last year, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives, launched a ‘Dive Free’ promotion offering free scuba diving for guests. A year on, and due to the overwhelming success of the promotion, Kandooma’s Dive Free has been extended until October 31, 2025.
“When we launched ‘Dive Free’ we knew this inclusion would set us apart from our competitors and it did. It has been extremely well received by scuba divers from around the world visiting the Maldives,” said Mark Eletr, General Manager, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives.
“I think in part the promotion's success is also due to our location on the doorstep to some of the Top 10 sites in the Maldives just a 15-minute boat ride away from the resort, making it possible for multiple dives in one day.”
Talking about the promotion, Mark explained that the scuba diving inclusion is for guests staying three or more nights.
“The ‘dive free’ element is treated similarly to how we treat breakfast, snorkeling lessons and access to the Kids’ Club. It’s just part of a Kandooma stay,” added Mark.
The resort has its own five-star PADI resort dive center, Kandooma Dive, complete with experienced and professional dive instructors, purpose-built facilities, and a dedicated fleet of dive boats. In 2023, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives was
named the Best Dive Resort in the Maldives, an award it has been nominated for again in 2024.
Divers can expect to see a wealth of marine life, including manta rays, whale sharks, reef sharks, colorful reef fish, turtles, eagle rays, and various coral species. Some of the dive spots near to Kandooma include:
1. Kandooma Thila: This renowned pinnacle showcases schools of vibrant fish, colorful coral formations, and abundant marine life including white-tip reef sharks and eagle rays; the site is a captivating spectacle of biodiversity.
2. Guraidhoo Corner: Drift along the currents and witness the congregation of gray reef sharks, white-tip sharks, and eagle rays. The site's dramatic underwater structure adds to the allure of this exciting dive.
3. Cocoa Corner: Known for its
thrilling currents, this site is a magnet for aquatic species. Divers often spot hammerhead sharks, manta rays, and other large marine inhabitants as they glide through the deep waters.
4. Kuda Giri: The Kuda Giri wreck is an interesting dive site in South Malé in the Maldives. It includes both a small wreck and a pinnacle. The site has created a welcoming habitat for a variety of marine life. There is hardly any current around this area, making it suitable for less experienced divers.
5. Manta Point: Witness the mesmerizing dance of manta rays as they gather to feed and be cleaned by smaller fish. This site promises awe-inspiring interactions with these majestic creatures.
6. Kandooma Caves: Explore a labyrinth of swim-throughs and underwater caverns adorned with sponges and gorgonians. The site is known for its macro life and the occasional appearance of larger predators.
“We are passionate about life beneath the surface, it truly is an aquatic wonderland,” said Mark.
“I’m a keen diver myself and exploring and sharing the deep blue with our guests is one of the highlights of my time here in the Maldives.” he added.
Dive Free inclusions are available to full-paying guests staying a minimum of three nights and include two single tank group dives for two certified divers per villa, per day of stay. All dives are fully guided, including free dive equipment, boat transfers, and air/Nitrox. Guests must be fit to dive and be fully certified. The offer is governed by PADI best practice, meaning there is no diving on the day of departure and surface intervals are observed. Any unused dives can only be rolled over to other days at the discretion of the Dive Centre Manager, and unused dives are not encashable or exchangeable for other services.

Angsana Velavaru Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainability, Cultural Heritage and Local Economy
At Angsana Velavaru, an all-inclusive premium resort in the virtually untouched South Nilandhe Atoll, sustainability and cultural preservation are woven into the fabric of daily life. The resort's journey, driven by passion and dedication, begins with a simple yet profound question: “What if dried coconut leaves could find new life? Can they breathe new purpose to the local community?”
Part of Banyan Group, an independent, global hospitality company with purpose, Angsana Velavaru honors Maldivian heritage and protects the environment, by embarking on the unique initiative, ‘The Life Cycle of Coconut Leaf.’ This starts with planting coconut trees on the resort and trimming their leaves regularly. Partnering with local communities, the resort transforms these discarded leaves into beautiful thatched roofs known as kajan.
Guided by the Group’s ethos, “Embracing the Environment, Empowering People”, the cycle begins with lush, green coconut palm trees that provide shade and beauty to the resort.
As leaves naturally die, they turn brown, becoming a potential resource rather than waste. Skilled climbers carefully harvest dead leaves, promoting new growth and maintaining tree health. Collected leaves are stored to dry and harden, preparing them for traditional weaving. Local artisans collect the aged leaves, ready to transform them into functional kajan roofing. The resort buys the processed leaves, supporting local artisans and preserving traditional skills. The kajan is delivered to the resort, carrying the essence of Maldivian craftsmanship. The thatched panels are installed on villa roofs, blending tradition with natural aesthetics. Old thatched roofs are carefully removed for repurposing, minimizing waste. The removed kajan is composted, enriching the soil with nutrient-rich organic matter. The compost is used to plant new coconut trees, completing the cycle of renewal. Through this initiative, we create a cycle of renewal that supports local communities, preserves cultural practices, and nurtures our environment.

Maldives Ocean Alliance Welcomes Government’s Support of Shark Fishing Ban: Cautions Over Reputational Dangers of Long-Lining
The Maldives Ocean Alliance (MOA) welcomes the recent announcement by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources confirming that the shark fishing ban will remain in effect. The government’s statement, at a time of increased speculation and concern from local and international marine scientists, has alleviated some of the concerns around a potential lifting of the shark fishing ban.
In response to the speculation surrounding a potential lifting of the ban, the MOA sent a letter to the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and the President’s Office on June 11, 2024 strongly urging the government to maintain the shark fishing ban.
The letter, signed by 13 member organizations of the MOA, highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of continuing to protect sharks in the Maldives. The letter also addressed misconceptions about shark populations in the Maldives, noting that despite the ban, sharks are still highly vulnerable to overfishing, due to their slow growth and low reproductive rates.
Furthermore, the letter stressed the importance of the shark ban on the tourism industry, noting that shark tourism and dives have increased significantly in recent years, and as such, healthy shark populations are of crucial importance for tourism-reliant communities across the Maldives. The direct revenue from shark tourism is estimated at $14.4 million, with an additional $51.4 million generated for local businesses.
However, MOA members also urged the government to regulate harmful practices such as shark feeding, which alters the behavioral patterns of sharks. As such, MOA called for active regulation, implementation of minimum standards and procedures, and adequate safety training.
Long-line fisheries will tarnish the reputation of Maldives’ tuna fisheries.
The MOA also cautioned against allowing long-line fisheries in the Maldives, which would tarnish the reputation of Maldives’ tuna fishery, which is built around sustainability because tuna is fished exclusively by pole-and-line, handline and trolling methods – the world’s most eco-friendly fishing technique.
Long-line fishing, by contrast, is harmful and results in the large by-catch of other sensitive species including sharks, turtles, rays, seabirds and dolphins. Furthermore, longlining can significantly deplete skipjack and yellowfin tuna stocks that the vast majority of local fishers rely on. Therefore, MOA urges the government to continue its commitment to Maldivian pole-and-line fisheries, as well as marine conservation, by not permitting longlining in Maldivian waters.
About the Maldives Ocean Alliance Established in 2023, the Maldives Ocean Alliance comprises 21 organizations working in the field of marine protection and conservation. Its network of NGOs, scientists, advocates and private sector practitioners seek to coordinate research, conduct outreach and education, and provide a collective voice as we work together to actively protect and promote ocean health for wildlife and people.
Kaani Hotels Wins Vaavu Lagoon Bid, Expands from Guesthouses to Resorts
In a milestone achievement, Kaani Hotels and Tours, pioneers of local island tourism, have secured the bid to develop a lagoon into a resort in Vaavu Atoll, Maldives. This significant move marks a major expansion for the family-owned business, transitioning from its guesthouse roots to a luxurious resort experience.
Kaani Hotels and Tours began its journey twelve years ago with a single 18-room guesthouse. Recognizing the potential of local tourism in the Maldives, they became pioneers in the guesthouse sector. Their dedication to exceptional service and authentic Maldivian experiences fueled their success, leading to a current portfolio of four guesthouses boasting 199 rooms. Two additional guesthouses, Kaani Haven Beach and Kaani Dream Beach, are currently under construction and slated to open in 2025, which will
bring their total portfolio to 411 rooms.
This latest venture, the Kaani Beach Resort project, promises to be a game-changer for Kaani Hotels. Planned as a club-style resort, it will offer a total of 200 rooms, featuring a combination of 120 luxurious beach rooms and 80 stunning water villas. The resort will provide guests with an unparalleled level of comfort and exclusivity while remaining true to Kaani's commitment to hospitality.

This expansion not only highlights
Kaani Hotels' impressive growth but also demonstrates their evolving role in the Maldivian tourism landscape. The Kaani Beach Resort project is poised to create
new opportunities for the local economy, further contributing to the atoll and helping to boost tourism arrivals in the Maldives.
N. Magoodhoo Launches Budu Fothi — A Reusable Nappy Program for Children on the Island
The island of N. Magoodhoo has initiated Budu Fothi, a pioneering reusable nappy program supported by the Women’s Development Committee, Island Council, Health Centre, and Soneva Namoona. Budu Fothi was officially launched at an event held yesterday in N.Magoodhoo with participating families.
As part of the initiative, the community will be testing out reusable nappies with the aim of:
Reducing the amount of nappy waste generated on the island.
Decreasing the number of nappies imported to the island.
Fostering a culture of using reusable nappies rather than single-use ones.
All thirty-two families on the island with diaper-wearing children will participate in the three-month trial. At the launch event,
each family received a reusable nappy kit along with guidance on how to use them. Participants also signed a pledge to adopt practices that ensure better health and a cleaner environment for their children. A community support group was also initiated to help the families and ensure the trial's success, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared learning.
As part of this program, local retailers will be provided with information about reusable nappies and introduced to Zero Waste Maldives, a supplier that stocks reusable nappies. This initiative aims to create a sustainable supply chain, ensuring better access to reusable nappies on Magoodhoo. An island-wide survey conducted prior to the trial revealed key insights into diaper usage patterns:
On average, a family spends approximately MVR 831 per month on single-use nappies, amounting to about MVR 30,000 over three years.
A child’s nappy is changed at least four times daily, resulting in around 4,320 soiled nappies over three years, which could cover an area of Sq.ft. 10,800 or 6 volleyball courts. This poses a significant disposal challenge to small communities.
Speaking about the Budu Fothi program, Maajidha Hassan, President of the Women’s Development Committee, said, “Managing nappy waste is a real challenge for our island and accumulated nappy waste is a health hazard. The Budu Fothi campaign presents a promising solution to solve this issue while creating a more sustainable environment for our children. We are thrilled that through this
program, parents now have information about and access to healthier alternatives.”
Khadeeja Hamid, Reduce Manager of Soneva Namoona, said, “This trial is crucial not only for collecting data to inform future work but also for highlighting the need for accessible, reusable alternatives to single-use products. We hope this initiative will drive broader changes and support from all stakeholders including government and private sector”
Fathimath Namha, a parent participating in the trial, said: “Participating in the Budu Fothi trial has given us hope that we can reduce our environmental footprint while providing safe and effective care for our children. We are excited to be part of this initiative.”

How would allowing shark fisheries impact tourism in the Maldives? What effects would fully enforcing a ban on shark feeding have?
Ibrahim Shahid CEO and Managing Director Blue K Safari Pvt Ltd
Allowing shark fisheries in the Maldives could significantly disrupt tourism. I believe that without proper regulation and enforcement, shark fishing could get out of control, threatening natural feeding grounds and disrupting the ecosystem. There are not enough coastguards or rangers to monitor the entire region effectively. This could lead to shark fishing in resort reefs, lagoons, and protected areas, negatively impacting marine life and deterring tourists who come to see vibrant underwater ecosystems.
On the other hand, fully enforcing a ban on shark feeding will be a big disadvantage for the tourism industry as well. Shark feeding activities contribute significantly to the revenue of excursion operators such as guesthouses, especially in the South and North Male atolls. Instead of a complete ban, regulating shark feeding practices could mitigate risks while preserving this aspect of the tourism industry. Proper regulation can address safety concerns without leading to significant financial losses for those reliant on these activities.
Alexander Brynt Chief Executive Officer Emperor Divers
Legalizing Shark fishing would be seen as a massive step backwards by the international community. Maldives and Palau are held up and promoted as pioneers of forward thinking progressive practices to sustainability.
In my opinion Shark Feeding is changing the behavior of sharks around humans and should be stopped. Banning shark feeding will have 0 impact on tourism generally.
Allowing shark fishing will have little effect on tourism numbers long term, but would not be good for Maldives imagine short term. It would most hurt the Liveaboard industry as it would definitely affect the quality of diving.
The couple of incidents that have led to this discussion have happened due to Tiger Sharks, which without feeding would not come into the Atoll and therefore not affect human beings.
Majority of tourists come to see reef sharks, which are also the easiest to catch so will no doubt be the most affected.
Zoona Naseem Co-Founder Moodhu Bulhaa Dive Centre
I believe that permitting shark fisheries will have a significant impact on the Maldives tourism sector. It's crucial to instill responsible behavior among guides. Shark feeding alters sharks' natural behavior and feeding habits. Due to these feeding practices, sharks gather at a single location, becoming dependent on that spot and humans for food, rather than feeding in different places as they naturally do. Accidents occur due to irresponsible behavior, such as bringing beginners into proximity with very hungry sharks. Whether diving or snorkeling, safety must be the top priority, conducted in a safe and secure manner.
Ibrahim Nizam Hospitality Consultant & Brand Strategist
Allowing shark fisheries in the Maldives could drastically damage the tourism industry. The Maldives is well-known for its rich marine biodiversity, and sharks are one of the main attractions for divers and eco-tourism lovers. If shark fishing is allowed, it could decrease the shark population, adversely affect our tourism industry, and create a negative image of the Maldives as a destination with a unique underwater world.
A strict ban on shark feeding would benefit sharks and the marine ecosystem. Sharks hunt for food, and shark feeding can disrupt their natural hunting behaviors and make them overly reliant on humans for their food, ultimately leading to an unhealthy population. By enforcing a ban on shark feeding, sharks would be encouraged to return to their natural feeding habits, promoting healthier populations.
In conclusion, as we position ourselves as a sustainable tourism destination with a focus on marine conservation and protected areas, it is imperative that we protect and preserve the natural habitats that are the main attractions of ecotourism. This includes enforcing a ban on shark fishing and feeding to ensure the long-term health of our marine ecosystem and the sustainability of our tourism industry.
Mohamed Seeneen
PADI Dive Instructor / A Founder Member and Former Dive Centre Coordinator, Divers Association of Maldives
The Maldives, renowned as a shark sanctuary, provides a shark-friendly environment beneficial to locals and tourism. Allowing shark fisheries could harm tourism by reducing shark populations, with ineffective regulation. Illegal shark fin fisheries have shifted to more profitable and less detectable shark meat exports.. Live sharks generate more revenue than dead ones.
While shark feeding practices are controversial due to their potential to alter natural shark behaviors and increase risks to humans, they also provide unique experiences that attract tourists. Shark feeding spots generate millions in revenue monthly, however, the proximity of feeding spots to populated areas raises safety concerns, making it essential to prioritize everyone's safety.
A complete ban on shark feeding might deter tourists and harm businesses. Instead, the state should allocate safe areas, regulate the practice, and engage stakeholders. Responsibility lies with the Tourism, Environment, and Fisheries Ministries, who have ignored the issue. Regulation falls under the Ministry of Tourism.
The impact on the Maldives' brand is slowly decaying. Unfortunately, we are becoming known for shark incidents and attacks, which cannot be ignored. If the issue is not addressed soon, it will make international news for all the wrong reasons.
