Dear Readers,

Autumn presents the perfect opportunity for travel, inviting us to slow down and embrace the warmth and comfort of a luxury escape. From planning year-end holidays to indulging in unforgettable experiences, this season encourages us to unwind and savor the moment.

This past August, we saw sun-seekers flocking to the Mediterranean in search of a sun-soaked retreat. Families, in particular, recognized the importance of reconnecting and creating lasting memories, free from the distractions of everyday life. However, the surge in prices and overcrowded resorts left many parents frustrated, especially as the government's new fines for taking children on holidays during term time came into e ect. Many agents reported sympathy for families and even saw cancellations as a result. Meanwhile, the Maldives continued to thrive, welcoming over 848,000 tourists from the top 10 source markets so far this year. According to the Tourism Ministry, this marks a 10.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year, when 1.1 million tourists visited our shores.

In this edition’s cover story, we feature Sunny Sandhu, General Manager of Singapore Airlines in the Maldives. With over 14 years of experience in diverse global markets, Sunny combines innovation with cultural adaptability in his leadership. As the youngest General Manager in Singapore Airlines’ history, he shares valuable insights on how to unlock the Maldives' immense potential and sustain the airline’s success. Sunny o ers a fresh perspective on navigating the evolving challenges and opportunities within the global travel industry.

For our Bon Appétit section, we shine the spotlight on Chef Daniel, Executive Chef at Constance Moofushi Maldives, as he presents his signature yellowfin tuna recipe. Hailing from Seychelles, Chef Daniel leads his multicultural team with precision and passion, delivering culinary excellence rooted in his rich expertise. A graduate of the Seychelles Hospitality Tourism Training College, his dedication to his craft has earned him well-deserved recognition, including recent accolades in the esteemed Seychellois rubrique Pli Lwen ki Sesel.

In our “Frankly Speaking” section on page 12, industry stakeholders share their views on how the Maldives can attract and accommodate "Knowmads"—creative, flexible individuals who work across borders, anytime, anywhere, often on project-based tasks.

This autumn, make the Maldives your destination for a serene and luxurious getaway. Whether you’re traveling as a family, couple, or solo, the unmatched beauty and tranquility of the Maldives promise an experience beyond compare.

Until next time,

Located away from the noise of city life, the peaceful site o ers a place of tranquility for visitors. RACL and Air Chateau Seek Approval to Launch Helicopter Service in the Maldives

Air Chateau DWC, a helicopter and vertiport operator based in Dubai; Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL), a state-owned enterprise in the Maldives; and Wings Capital Management from Abu Dhabi, UAE, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to form a partnership under the “Project Elevate Maldives.” This initiative seeks to launch VVIP & HNI air taxi services, commercial cargo and passenger operations with eVTOLs, and develop advanced air mobility infrastructure throughout the Maldives, facilitating island air mobility for drones and VTOL aircraft.

To advance this project, RACL, which

manages domestic airport operations, along with Air Chateau, the Dubai-based helicopter operator, and Wings Capital Management, the project management facilitator, plan to create a Public-Private Partnership. Air Chateau will establish a network of vertiports and droneports to link over 1,200 islands in the Maldives.

Within a network stretching approximately 180 nautical miles from the capital Male to the northern and southern regions, Air Chateau will be granted a 20-year operating license for helicopters and eVTOLs by RACL. The company will also work to attract foreign direct investment

for the project.

The plan includes the development of up to 100 hybrid vertiports across the 1,200 islands, equipped with Touch Down and Lift-O (TLOF) areas, Final Approach and Take-O (FATO) zones, safety zones, terminal waiting areas, and infrastructure for charging and fire prevention. Additionally, up to 500 drone ports for cargo operations will be created, supporting logistics for first-, middle-, and last-mile segments, and will feature charging stations and fire-retardant systems.

RACL’s Managing Director, Ahamed Mubeen, mentioned that the company currently operates eight airports across the Maldives and aims to increase this number to 15 soon, in line with government plans. Mubeen expressed enthusiasm about partnering with globally recognized firms like Wings Capital Management and Air Chateau, considering it a prime opportunity for investors in the aviation sector.

Nipuna Wahalathanthrige, Group CEO of Wings Capital Management, highlighted the South Asian region’s potential for growth and innovation due to advanced technology and strategic management. As the Project Management Facilitator, Wings

Capital Management is dedicated to the success of the initiative and noted strong interest from foreign investors and the current government’s proactive stance on investment opportunities.

Dr. Samir Mohammed, Chairman of Air Chateau, emphasized the Maldives' potential in the tourism and mobility sectors, estimating a market of around half a billion dollars annually for air tourism transfers. He noted that the Maldives is well-positioned for Island Air Mobility (IAM), similar to Regional Air Mobility (RAM) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM), with the company's helicopters and future eVTOL operations complementing existing transport modes in a coordinated hub-and-spoke system.

The “Elevate Maldives” project aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and aims to generate carbon credits.

Recently, the Maldives Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation called for expressions of interest from companies to provide helicopter services for tourists and emergency evacuations. The winning bidder will receive a 10-year exclusive contract for nationwide helicopter services, including tourist transport and air ambulance services, with no other company permitted to o er similar services during this period.

The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort Completes

Valuable Solar Initiative

The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, situated in Baa Atoll, the first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site in the Maldives, has announced the completion of a new solar project, which will save energy and minimize environmental impact.

The resort is blessed with a year-round tropical climate, and to utilize this, they created the solar panel project, which will lead to the property reducing its usage of diesel by 135,000 liters annually, representing a decrease of 361,800 kg in carbon emissions, equivalent to 16,400 planted trees. Discretely nestled in the heart of the island, the 650 new solar panels produce approximately six hours of energy daily, and the resort will save

over USD 135,000 by switching to this renewable energy source.

The project represents The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. For food waste management, they have a food compost machine, and this by-product is used within the resort’s gardens. Their innovative bottle crusher repurposes broken bottles and glasses and turns these into umbrella bases for the villas.

General Manager at The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, Vijay Kumar, commented, “As an island resort, sustainability is key, and we are committed to creating solutions

to minimize the impact we have on this beautiful ecosystem. The new panels will serve to harness the

and

sunshine we are blessed with in the Maldives
reduce our reliance on energy sources such as diesel.”

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives Protects Hawksbill Turtle Nests

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives has taken steps to secure the nests of hundreds of eggs from a returning Hawksbill Turtle who has selected the western shores of the private island paradise as her nesting beach.

“We are thrilled to have discovered the nest which is a good indication that the turtles feel safe and welcome at Kandooma.” said Mark Eletr, General Manager, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives.

“The Hawksbill Sea Turtles are critically endangered and it’s our responsibility to protect our environment, ecosystems and keep these beautiful creatures safe. Education plays a big part in what we do at Kandooma helping our guests to understand the journey and how precious the nests are,”

Hawksbill Sea Turtles (Eretmochelys Imbricata) have the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List Status as critically endangered. The turtles are understood to live 30-50

years and range in size from 66 to 95 cm at maturity. Maturity is not defined by age, it varies and depends on food availability. The turtles, carnivores, mate approximately every two years in secluded lagoons o their nesting beaches. They nest two to five times per season and in the Maldives with the warm Indian Ocean the females lay an average of 100 to 180 eggs per nest. The incubation period is approximately two months.

Mark explains that the turtles go from the water up the beaches to the vegetation line to nest. When nesting is not spotted in progress, shallow track marks left in the sand up to 85cm wide with the telltale symmetrical marks that the forelimbs make are a solid indication.

“Our team will now monitor the nests and as it becomes closer to the big day when the eggs hatch, the protective nets around the nests will be removed to allow the baby turtles to start their life’s journey. It’s pretty neat to see, albeit

from a distance.” Mark said.

Mark explains that the Resort has some simple rules in place at the island regarding hatchlings including no bright lights, no loud noises, take care where you walk, and if you see a hatchling disoriented or heading inland, gently turn it around to face the sea and alert one of the sta . The nests are fenced to

protect them from people stepping on the nest as it is soft sand from top to bottom. The hatched turtles have to climb out of the nest as they mimic swimming in the sea. “Only 1 in 1,000 will make it to maturity. The turtles have many predators, among them humans, sharks, triggerfish and grouper, while discarded nets known as Ghost nets as well as erosion are also a threat.” adds Mark.

"Knowmads" are creative, flexible individuals who can work with anyone, anytime, and anywhere, often on project-based tasks, relying on technology that supports mobility and real-time collaboration. Often their stays extend for months (if services are of above satisfactory).

As Maldives prepare for the growing global market of Knowmad travelers, what unique services can we offer to attract and accommodate them?

Dr.h.c.

Our Shine Goglobal Ltd, Singapore Goglobal Accelerator

I recognised that the knowmads have very unique personalities - as much as they give priority to freedom, comfort & privacy, they are also open to peer support, connections and contributing to society (meaningful life), etc.

That being said, you can create a very strong niche for yourself by going to the specific needs of gender or age, etc of knowmads. For example, Millennials, couples, women only, above 40s, etc. This will give you a much more perspective to creating an e ective business development – marketing plan. Remember when you target everyone, you get no one.

Packages created for this growing market that usually stays in a specific destination for 1-3 months or more sometimes, need to be a ordable, flexible terms and with a homely feeling of ‘belonging’.

Look at & Access the various service providers, vendors in your network that come together – collaborate to co-market with you. Internet bundle with local telco providers, with “home” meals & laundry will be a comprehensive Basic bundle of services. Above all of these needs, take into consideration eco-products, healthy and green concepts, that will be an irresistible o er for the KnowMads to be attracted to you.

We should consider a specialized work visa that allows for longer stays and improved digital services to support their work. However, it's important to strike a balance by ensuring that the services they provide do not negatively impact local employment opportunities in the same fields.

As Maldives prepares for the growing global market of Knowmad travelers, there are a couple of things that would help make their stay comfortable and fruitful.

Though knowmads can work from anywhere, they thrive the most when they have a community of like-minded people. So creative common areas, meeting spaces, and collaborative events would be a great way of enhancing their productivity and giving them a feeling of being part of a larger community. Some other things would be: regular creative events, fun spaces that can be used for community gatherings, online groups and common areas for working.

With its pristine beaches, blue lagoons, eco-friendly resorts, and island hotels, the Maldives is an excellent destination for Knowmad travelers. The peaceful and harmonious environment o ers maximum privacy for those travelers who enjoy working remotely or while traveling.

Some unique services we can o er to KNOWMAD travelers are co-working spaces with ocean views and cozy environments, high-speed internet, wellness programs and sports activities, healthy dining options with local and continental food and beverages.

In addition, resorts and local islands should o er discounts on extended stays.

By o ering services that cater to their specific needs, we can create a unique and wonderful environment for Knowmad travelers and ensure that their Maldives experience is exceptional.
