Hosts and Guests at Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort Join World Oceans Day Activities

O

utrigger Konotta Maldives Resort held “Our Ocean, Our Future,” marine awareness events to honour World Oceans Day 8 June 2017. The events were an extension of Outrigger’s global OZONE (Outrigger’s Zone) marine conservation program, with all nine Outrigger Resorts participating around the world. In the Maldives, Outrigger staff and guests conducted a beach and lagoon reef clean up to remove marine debris from the reef. Later in the afternoon there was a coral restoration program. After a briefing, guests helped the Best Dives Konotta staff attach fragments of coral to a metal frame which will be placed underwater to encourage new coral growth.

This June, throughout World Oceans Month, Outrigger Resorts properties worldwide are offering a diverse range of immersive activities and conservation opportunities for Outrigger guests to get in the OZONE mind-set and make a difference, even while on vacation. Some 60% of the world’s coral reefs are being denuded by climate change, landbased pollution and unsustainable fishing. Outrigger’s OZONE conservation program encourages guests to become part of the solution by participating in marine conservation activities while on vacation.

In the evening, guests and staff gathered around the pool and watched a documentary called “Planet Ocean” by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. In the Outrigger Kids Club, youngsters participated in World Oceans Day by painting pictures with the theme, “My Ocean”. There were ocean face painting sessions, creating sand sculptures and a viewing of the Walt Disney movie “Moana”. The lagoon clean up and the key activities of World Oceans Day were led by Best Dives Maldives.

The Maldives is one the most exotic and fragile tropical destinations on the planet. “Resort operators should always strive to ensure that we delight all our guests and by doing this, we are contributing to the ever growing positive tourism reputation that the Maldives is achieving.

Mark Hehir CEO & Curator at The Small Maldives Island Co, General Manager at Amilla Fushi & Finolhu Resorts Mr. Mark Hehir is one of the most notable figures in the tourism industry of Maldives due to his vast knowledge, experience, innate instincts and masterful ideas. Well respected by everyone, Mark has risen to become the leading figure of The Small Maldives Islands Co, which owns two of the best resorts in the Maldives in the form of Amilla Fushi and the more recent Finolhu. Mark explained to our team here at The Island Chief, what his journey to the top was like, the difficulties he incurred as well the his ideas for improving the Maldivian tourism sector. 1.How did you enter the tourism sector? Could you give us a small description of the early days of your career? I was born and raised in Australia, studied and worked as a chef for a number of years in Australia and around the world. I have served the Royals in Britain and worked in numerous top hotels. I was never satisfied to be an average chef as my ideas to develop my skills and knowledge, ultimately my career drove me to achieve my goals. My career span of 33 years in the industry has seen my work all over the world with various companies and growth in numerous positions. I came to the Maldives by chance; after working for a year at Hilton Colombo / World Trade Center Club in 1997, my company offered me the opportunity to come to the Maldives to join the preopening team of Hilton Maldives Rangali Island (now re-branded as Conrad Maldives Rangali Island). Then, I had no clue as to where and what the Maldives had to offer. Blindly, I agreed to join Rangali Island as the Executive Chef for a three-month period, which was then extended to three years. From Rangali, I moved to work at Hilton Tokyo and Hilton Kuala Lumpur. After four years, I came back to Huvafen Fushi as the Area General Manager. From there, I joined Anantara to open two resorts in Bali and Thailand.

3.How would you describe your approach to management? I work to inspire and motivate my team for achieving goals and influence valuable changes. I firmly believe that one should always be ready to get their hands dirty to do the job. I inspire my islanders with not only words but with action and believe that with hard work and determination anyone can achieve.

4.In your view, how does resorts such as Amilla Fushi and Finolhu stand out from others? Having shaken up the hospitality scene in the Maldives and setting itself apart from its traditional competitors with the innovative design, unique aesthetics and a sleek contemporary feel is both refreshing and sexy. Amilla Fushi is an architecturally striking resort with clean lines and gleaming white surfaces that contradicts the tropical landscape and thatched-roof resorts in the Maldives while adding an element of modernism and taking it to that next level.

6.Could you tell us a bit more about the challenges faced when handling major resorts such as Finolhu and Amilla Fushi? With great teams around me, major challenges can be avoided when overseeing or managing both Finolhu and Amilla Fushi. We can have the most luxury resort with the most amazing features, but without good customer service & skills, provided by our team members the resort wouldn’t be where it is now. This is something that we always look into when hiring people to work for Finolhu and Amilla Fushi.

talents as well as world famous brands to enhance our guests’ island experiences. The Bread Street Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay Pop ups we had already started and will continue this and next year. 8.What is your relationship with your staff? REVIEW

The Breathtaking BAR-EE

O

ur visit to the island of Jumeirah Vittaveli granted us an inside view of one of the best bars in Asia, both in terms of quality of its products and the breathtaking atmosphere it provides. Our trip gave us a deeper view into the everyday life at BAR-EE, the creativity and genius of the staff and why it is regarded as one of the most amazing experiences to gain from you stay at Jumeirah Vittaveli.

BAR-EE, along with a unique name, has been dubbed as an innovative conveyor belt of beverages, gushing out drink after drink, each one better than the other. It is one of the most famous bars in the Maldives, and is located on the pristine island of Jumeirah Vittaveli. The best feature of BAR-EE is its prime location, described as a pool bar without being a pool bar by its professional staffs. These words convey all the different ways that the resort has utilized the bar to its fullest. With the waves of the vast Indian Ocean, lapping alongside the platform, BAR-EE’s location is something to die for. It is just a few meters away from a flawless long stretch of sandy beach, which is one of the most popular beaches on the island. It is the kind of place, people would have a hard time describing. Magical and elegant, yet so simplistic and natural. It is the kind of place where you can drink to forget your worries of the world. Lay back on your deck chair and comfortably witness the sun setting on the horizon as your mind is slowly taken away from the complications and challenges of everyday life. The beach proudly showcases the features of the Maldives that has made it so popular throughout the world and a drink is all you will be craving for alongside you at BAR-EE. Never halting its advancements, the bar has recently updated its cocktail lists. Now, it features some of the most classic and famous drinks in the world next to some of the most innovative, modern drinks fashioned by the staffs of BAR-EE which is native to the Maldives and its amazing culture. Different varieties of cocktails are available for you to enjoy at BAR-EE including the classics such as the Martini, Manhattan or the Daiquiri, but also local cocktail mixtures are infused with the intelligence and inventive knowledge of the team behind the counter. The Vittaveli Garden and the Kuda Bileh cocktail which were created based on the ideas of the local Maldivian staff base will stand as a testament to the huge strides that the bars of the Maldives, have made in cropping its own path to success. A light yet delightful conversation with the manager made me realize how much care and attention that his team puts into serving their customers from morning till midnight. The new and extensive cocktail menus were decided after consulting with a multitude of experts in the industry as well as within the team itself. The result has been spectacular for Jumeirah Vittaveli, with every single guest to visit BAR-EE, declaring it as one of the most unique and remarkable bars they have ever stepped into in Asia. BAR-EE has been such a success that their staffs have won awards for their excellence and can easily boast that they are the best bar in the Maldives, a country filled with world class hotels and resorts. Along with the beautiful view, location and the mouth watering cocktails, BAR-EE never fails to amaze its guests. With DJ’s and belly dancer performances setting the mood by the pool, patrons are never left jaded and are always kept on their tiptoes for the next wonderful surprise by the resort. Such an amazing experience is only delivered through the hard work and reliability of the staffs at BAR-EE. The manager described his team as a strong, steadfast one with innovative intelligent minds, who never fail to amaze him with their creativity, has an immense respect and gratitude for them. The current team at BAR-EE is young and is granted the freedom to experiment as how they like, which resulted in the new cocktails such as the Vittaveli Garden. He described his team as working in accordance with their guests profiles. The team is a very diverse one indeed, as no locals are involved, it is mostly a mixture of South Asians, such as Filipinos, Indians and Sri Lankans, but every now and then a European steps into the crowd to mix things up. The manager divulged that that is how the innovative and diverse ideas come about at BAR-EE. The story of BAR-EE and its collection of refreshing moments are hopefully a never ending one. It is certainly one of the most calming yet adventurous experiences you will ever embark upon if you are staying Jumeirah Vittaveli.
