ATP Calls Upon Hoteliers to Join Single Use Plastic Ban Pledge The Maldives Association of Tourism Professionals (ATP) has called upon all tourism facilities to join the pledge to ban single-use plastic. ATP stated that the association is to partner with all tourism facilities including resorts, hotels, guesthouses as part of their campaign to ban single-use plastics, and urged all hoteliers to join in the campaign. The association, which aims to inform the industry on sustainable tourism practices, stated that all companies, irrespective of how big or small, must do their part to reduce the harmful impacts on the environment, and that the campaign is one of the steps ATP has taken to promote the det-rimental effects of plastics on the environment, especially the beaches and ocean. Plastic affects the underwater marine life in many ways, and lead to the death of different types of species. One of the effects includes plastic ingestion. Plastic bags are also mistaken as jelly fish by sea turtles and consume them, resulting in them choking to death, or dying of hunger once the plastic clogs their stomachs. “The choices that we make today, will define our collective future. I call upon all tourism estab-lishments to join us and pledge to ban singleuse plastic.” Said Dr Hussain Sunny Umar, Presi-dent of ATP. ATP urges pledging facilities to reuse durable, non-toxic straws, utensils, to-go containers, bot-tles, bags and other everyday items within these establishments. Interested parties are requested to reach out to ATP via info@ atpmaldives.org and share their plastic ban journey.
