Grammy Award-winning trio The Gatlin Brothers (Larry, Steve and Rudy) return to The Grand this summer for an encore performance! The Gatlin Brothers have dazzled audiences for more than sixty years with a lifetime of noteworthy achievements including their Grammy Award-winning single “Broken Lady,” and chart-topping successes including their signature song “All the Gold In California” and “Houston (Means I’m One Step Closer To You).” Come to The Grand for a summer evening of country music fun with The Gatlin Brothers! Writer Samuel Gallu has penned a faithful and often humorous portrayal of President Harry S. Truman’s life and presidency. It spans his childhood, his “political apprenticeship” as a judge in Jackson County, MO, his years in the US Senate, and his momentous two terms as President. Clifton Truman Daniel took up the mantle as President Truman in October of 2017, marking the first time in history a US president would be portrayed onstage by a direct descendant. Silent film with Rob Landes: “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” Friday, October 25th (8pm)
An annual Halloween tradition, Rob Landes reprises his specially created, totally improvised musical score for the showing of John Barrymore’s 1920 silent film classic, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” Playing the dual roles of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Barrymore was hailed by a critic who praised his portrayal as “a thing of fine shadows and violent emotions.” Long before the age of digital sound and computerized special effects, silent film actors transported audiences to worlds of romance, comedy, adventure, and horror without uttering a single word. Landes’ magical underscoring of this film will transport you! Come in costume if you dare! Tickets are $20.
Jaston Williams: “Don’t Blame the Car!”

Jaston Williams returns to The Grand for his annual summer outing with “Don’t Blame the Car!” Jaston’s first driver’s license read 4 feet 11 and 85 pounds. He learned to drive from his mother who assured him that passing on the right was permitted even on a two-lane road. The day his father tried to teach him to drive a standard shift, the man had to cut the lesson short and return home for bed rest. Hear this along with other stories, including the one about the twirler who repeatedly injured herself with her own baton and the true account of why Jaston holds a lifelong grudge against potatoes. Known nationally as the co-author, co-star, and producer of the four award-winning plays in the Greater Tuna cycle, Jaston Williams is a writer, performer, and Grand favorite who will leave you in stitches! Legendary flautist, Sir James Galway is bringing his “80th Birthday Celebration Tour” to The Grand as part of The Grand’s 125th Anniversary! A supreme performer, called “the Man with the Golden Flute,” Sir James will share the stage for selected pieces with flautist Lady Jeanne Galway. A man whose appeal transcends all musical boundaries, Sir James was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame in 2008 alongside fellow inductees Liza Minnelli and B.B. King, and is possibly the only classical instrumentalist to bear the distinction. Melodious sounds will fill the acoustically perfect Grand! Hear about the life-damaging Santa Claus experience, the Christmas tree that caused the cat to have a nervous collapse and what it was like every Christmas to be one of four people in the room with the same first name. Vienna Boys Choir

Boys have been singing at Vienna’s Imperial Chapel since 1296. Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn, and Franz Schubert were themselves choir boys. The Texas Tenors share The Grand’s anniversary by launching their own 10th Anniversary Tour for the 2019-2020 season and creating a performance for The Grand that celebrates musical legends. The Temptations

The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. It wasn’t until 1964, however, that Smokey Robinson wrote and produced “The Way You Do the Things You Do” turning the guys into stars and ultimately legends! Saengerfest Park, located in the heart of Downtown Galveston, is a great place to find free family-friendly fun as we move into the warmest weather of the year. Saengerfest Park is a small, square park located on the corner of 23rd St. and The Strand in Galveston’s Historic Strand District. Saengerfest Park is known for having a large, playable chess set, a large compass that can be used as a seat, a colorful iconic Galveston wall mural, a huge beach chair offering photo opportunities, wooden benches, an old-fashioned London-style phone booth, and a stage used for festivals, movies, and concerts. Visitors and residents are invited to enjoy free movies the first Saturday of each month beginning just after dusk. Moviegoers are encouraged to set up a blanket or chair. The 2nd Annual Galveston Island Film Festival & Conference is a 4-day event (October 4th-7th) that will include panel discussions, screenings of feature and short films, and networking opportunities with creative minds from all walks of life. The four-day festival will screen films in three categories: short, feature, and documentary at Moody Gardens 3D Theatre, providing filmmakers and attendees a first-class state-of-the-art experience to watch fresh, innovative, and creative contents from filmmakers around the world. At Riondo’s Ristorante on The Strand, informative seminars and networking gatherings will focus on diversity in the entertainment industry, ways to better integrate technology, and how the entertainment business landscape has changed to provide more opportunities, and give attendees an opportunity to relax, collaborate, and educate. The celebrity ambassador for the film festival is actor/director/producer Antonio Fargas, internationally known for his work in television and film. Galveston Children’s Museum (GCM) believes there is brilliance in all of us and wants to help develop the DaVinci in you! Please join for the second annual DaVinci Day on Saturday, October 12th, 10am-5pm, on the grounds of the Galveston Children’s Museum. This is a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness featuring local builders, artists, educators, students, crafters, tinkerers, and hobbyists seeking to share their creations and ideas. DaVinci Day attendees will explore hands-on activities and use their imagination to create something unique. Summer Camps Concludes
Two camps remain for this summer. Camps are $250 for a full week or $50 per day. Register at galvestoncm.org. August 5th-9th (9am-4pm): Maker Mania Summer Camp - “Tinkering to Create” will be the theme. From circuits to automation, campers will design and create a variety of fun stuff. Tasks will be varied, as will the materials used, so the only thing extra that’s needed is your camper’s imagination to bring it to life. This camp is recommended for ages 7 and up. August 5th-9th (9am-4pm) (ages 4-8) - The Art and Science of Storybooks - Using some classic storybooks, campers will explore the science and art within. Be it the science of color, animals, or paper, they will investigate. Regarding the art, children will learn about illustrators and explore their work on their own terms. Join at The Proletariat for an Open Mic night of poetry. All ages are welcome. Come out and share your work with open ears and open hearts, or come out and listen to poets share their work with you. Participants will experience the cool climate, sounds, and even the smells of the exhibit, and witness a Moody Gardens Penguin create a work of art as part of an enrichment activity for the animal. Bishop’s Palace is recognized as one of America’s finest examples of Victorian exuberance and Gilded Age extravagance and is listed by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark. Available Daily (11am-5pm): Bishop’s Palace Audio Tours - Powered by Acoustiguide, this Audio Tour allows visitors to see historical images not seen by previous tours on a handheld high-resolution screen. August 10th, 24th (9am) - Marine Biology Tour provides participants with a hands-on opportunity to observe dolphins and other species in their natural habitat, trawl for and handle marine organisms, study plankton through a microscopic lens, and explore Galveston Bay’s rich history. This unique experience takes place on board the SEAGULL II, a 50’ catamaran which docks at the Texas Seaport Museum, and is led by a marine biologist. The Texas Seaport Museum is home to the 1877 ELISSA and also tells the story of a rich legacy of seaborne commerce and immigration. Tickets are $20.
“BONEhemian Rhapsody” At Bryan Museum This Month: Texas-Themed Quilts & Theme Set For 19th “Woga” At The Bryan Annual Paws Gala The Bryan Museum is The 19th annual PAWS Gala - benefiting the Galveston Island Humane Society (GIHS) is set for Saturday, September 28th at Galveston Convention Center at 6:30-11pm. This year’s gala will honor Lea Fistein, DVM, owner of The Animal Clinic and The Cat Clinic. “BONEhemian Rhapsody” is this year’s theme and the event is sure to sell out very quickly! Master of Ceremonies is Frank Billingsley, KPRC/Channel 2’s Chief Meteorologist. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 6:30pm. Guests will visit with the Elite Pet Owners (EPO’s) and their precious pets featured in one large vignette. Elite Pet Owners will vie for their animal to be crowned “Pet of the Year for 2020.” Guests attending this year’s event will enjoy an open bar, sumptuous seated dinner, and dancing to PASSWORD - guaranteed to keep partiers dancing! Train Rides at Galveston Railroad Museum Every Saturday, weather permitting, Galveston Railroad Museum, located at 2602 Santa Fe Place, Downtown Galveston, offers train rides for all ages on The Harborside Express. The “Harborside Express” is an open-air caboose that travels 1 mile up Harborside Dr., then returns to the Galveston Railroad Museum. The train rides are approximately 15-minutes long. The train is a standing ride without seats. Due to the caboose being open air, the rides will sometimes be closed during inclement weather. Boarding for the Harborside Express begins at 11am, with the last train ride departing the depot at 1:45pm. His long career at The Johnson Space Center focused on research and exploration of the effects of weightlessness on the human body. August 17th (4-6pm): Second Annual Distinguished Speaker Series with Stephen Harrigan - The author of eleven books of fiction and non-fiction, including the award-winning novel “The Gates of the Alamo,” Harrigan will discuss his upcoming publication, a sweeping history of Texas titled “Big Wonderful Thing,” due out this October. Harrigan is a writerat-large and long-time contributor to “Texas Monthly,” as well as a noted screenwriter and essayist. For his various literary achievements, he was presented in 2019 with the Texas Medal of Arts. He and his wife Sue Ellen live in Austin. August 18th (2-4pm): Daughter of Fortune: The Bettie Brown Story - Come to this lecture to discuss Rebecca Ashton “Bettie” Brown, a woman who epitomized America’s Golden Age and represented the changing face of the Victorian woman at the turn of the century. Born into merchant aristocracy of Galveston in 1855, she enjoyed a luxurious upbringing in Aston Villa. Notably, she served various philanthropic causes throughout her life, helped care for the homeless after the Great Storm of 1900, and raised money for many children’s charities. Be prepared to discuss “Daughter of Fortune: The Bettie Brown Story (Women of the West Series)” by Sherrie McLeRoy. This Book Club is for members only. September 14th (4-6pm): “La Salle’s Ghost: American Claims to Texas from the Louisiana Purchase to the Republic of Texas” - Dr. Frank de La Teja, Director of the Texas State Historical Association and former State Historian, will make the presentation “La Salle’s Ghost: American Claims to Texas from the Louisiana Purchase to the Republic of Texas,” an epic story of Texas as part of world history.

“Patchwork History: Texas-Themed Quilts From the Winedale Quilt Collection” - The Bryan Museum, proudly presents “Patchwork History: Texas-Themed Quilts from the Winedale Quilt Collection” on loan from the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas, Austin. “Texas quiltmakers regularly honor the state by creating Texas-themed commemorative, patriotic, and family quilts,” said Kate Adams, quilt curator at the Briscoe Center. “‘Patchwork History’ showcases examples of these, many of which have only been displayed rarely. Of special interest in this exhibit will be two quilts made by award-winning quiltmaker Shirley Stevenson of Sherman, Texas, who established a quilt collection at the Briscoe Center in 2014. Also on view will be the award-winning Captain Tom, “A Tall Texan,” which has been called “a masterpiece of pictorial appliqué.” This is on view until September 1st.

St. Augustine of Hippo Episcopal Church, established in June 1884, is the first Episcopal Church in Texas established by and for African-American faithful. It was established by 50 black seafarers who sought their own parish in order to worship on the sabbath, rather than evenings mid-week, to which they had been limited. Rev. Dr. William F. Floyd, a black physician and clergyman from Louisville, Ky., was the church’s first vicar, appointed in the summer of 1885. September 6th (9am-1pm): Seaside Senior Expo 2019 - This free Senior Health Care and Resource Fair provides health care information and resources for older adults and family caregivers. Her talk will include monarch basics and the milkweed that monarch caterpillars need to survive. There will be freebies and beverages. The 33rd Annual AIA Sandcastle Competition will take place on Saturday August 24th at East Beach in Galveston. The AIA SandCastle Competition is a fund-raising event for AIA Houston and ArCH Foundation as well as one of the top five revenue generating events for the City of Galveston. This year over 60 teams have their eyes and shovels set on winning the prestigious Golden Bucket Award. Firms begin months in advance generating ideas, developing designs, and assigning duties. On the day of the event the teams, stretched along the beachfront, meticulously sculpt their piles of sand and work non-stop for five hours. The judging of the sculptures is rated on originality of concept, artistic execution, technical difficulty, carving technique, and utilization of the site. In addition to the Golden Bucket, awards are given in several categories including Best Traditional Castle, Best Architectural Icon, Kidtastic! - LEGO Edition, Best Science Fiction, Best Sports and Houston-centric as well as best team t-shirt design, best team signage, best costume, and public favorite. At the end of the day, everyone goes home with memories of a great day at the beach filled with fun, sand, and sun. The schedule for the day is: • 9am: Watch how the pros prepare and set up in order to build large scale sculptures. Feel free to ask questions about their techniques and tools as well as post your photos using #AIASandCastle.
• 10am-3pm: SandCastle building, music, and refreshments. Valid ID is required to get beer from the beer tents. • 1-3:30pm: Public favorite voting: be sure to vote for your favorite sand sculptures! • 3-4pm: Sandcastle judging • 4:30pm: Team T-shirt design presentation and Awards ceremony at the stage After the event, the general public is great at respecting the sand sculptures. Please remind the kids not to climb on them. The sculptures always last throughout Sunday and into Monday as they slowly crumble away. This is the perfect time to come back and carefully get in close to take some photographs. Parking at East Beach Galveston is $15, cash only, and is collected by the Galveston Parks Board. Free Sandcastle Building Lessons For All Ages Attention budding builders – sandcastle builders, that is. Every Saturday through August 17th, 8am-4pm, Galveston will host a FREE family-friendly event to help beachgoers create spectacular sandcastles with tips from the pros. Visitors to Stewart Beach can participate in “Sandcastle Days” events to receive FREE sandcastle building lessons from a professional sandcastle builder. Each event will begin with an instructor building a sandcastle from 8-11am followed by lessons at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Equipment will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own sand buckets and shovels. The lessons will take place on the sand near the Stewart Beach Pavilion. Upcoming events include: August 5th to 10th: Aquatic Adventure Summer Camp - This is the final session of Aquatic Adventure Summer Camp. Registration is still available for resident and day campers. August 10th-12th: The U.S. Sailing Basic Keelboat Class is designed for people who want a refresher or for those who have little to no experience. This is a three (3) day class, and the fee is $250 for members or $350 for non-members. Upon passing this course, you will receive your U.S. Sailing Basic Keelboat certification. This internationally recognized certification will allow you to bareboat charter keelboats up to 27’ almost anywhere in the world. It will also allow members to use SSBG sonars anytime SSBG is open, and boats that are not currently utilized in a program. August 17th: The Boy Scouts of America NOVA Award 2019 Science Everywhere is being offered to all Cub Scouts looking to earn the NOVA Award Belt Loop/ Pin for Science. This course is designed to help Cub Scouts explore how science affects daily life. The Science belt loop/ pin will teach scouts how to complete scientific experiments and will help them learn how to present their experiment results in an exciting and fun way. Participants will learn about animals in the oceans, the different phases of water, and how levers and pulleys make daily life more comfortable. This program will help instill the use of science to understand the world around us. August 17th (7am-12 noon): Fishing Basics is a 4-hour class that teaches knot tying, casting, lure selection for different species of fish, and how to catch fish in the Galveston waters. Participants will have the opportunity to fish off beautiful private docks for redfish, speckled trout, black drum, sheepshead, pinfish, catfish, stingray, and more. The cost is $50 per person, and all ages are welcome to attend, but a parent or guardian must accompany those under seven years old. August 24th to 25th – U.S. Powerboating Course is being offered to all who wish to get out of the classroom and get behind the wheel. This 16-hour, hands-on, on-the-water course is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a small motorboat and improve their boat handling skills. No previous experience is required. Price is $315 per person. Bring a lunch and dress comfortably for both indoor and outdoor activities. August 31st (8am-5pm): Essentials of Kayak Touring is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Kayaking Level II course where participants will learn about the parts of the boat and their function, basic paddle strokes, and rescues. Upon completion of the course, participants will have the skills needed to self-rescue, assist in a rescue of someone else, and be able to maneuver their kayak efficiently and effectively on calm bodies of water. The cost of this 8-hour course is $100.

Every Saturday (9-11am and 1-5pm): Youth Sailing Program - In the Youth Sailing program, children learn stewardship of our oceans, coasts, and communities; dedicated volunteers heavily mentor them in physical skills, social skills, critical thinking, and teamwork skills that will carry them throughout life. Beginning Sailors meet 9-11am; Intermediate Sailors meet 1-5pm. Pricing is $40 per child per session. Every Saturday (2-4pm): Adaptive Sailing Program, which was voted the best in the nation by U.S. Sailing in 2015, continues to thrive and grow. Bucket Brigade Interpretive Beach Tours are free for the public, last approximately 45 minutes, and are offered at Stewart Beach in Galveston. Hands-on activities investigate topics including Galveston’s turbid water, marine debris, Sargassum landings, and more. Starting in August, tours are offered FridaySunday through August 31st. Participants can sign up on location near the Beach Patrol Tower #6 at Stewart Beach. Tours are scheduled to start at 9:30am, 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 2:30pm, and 3:30pm.

Volunteer Open Work Day at The Coastal Preserve
Develop a sense of purpose by Volunteering with Artist Boat at the Coastal Heritage Preserve. Build connections, learn something new, and meet new people while having fun outdoors. At a Volunteer Workday, you can help preserve and restore the native coastal prairie ecosystem. Activities might include planting native grasses, laying down seeds, taking care of the native plant nursery, removing or treating for invasive species, and more. The reason is she killed the man who was trying to kill her, and she is, after all, an ex-con. It’s Beaumont in the 1970s and mindsets don’t change very fast along the Texas Gulf Coast. Her boss, the neophyte private detective Tom Phelan, sets out to get her cleared, and quickly. He wants her back at work, and in no time they are back at it, scoring clients and getting deep into other people’s business. Their first case seems easy - two brothers, one searching, the other hiding - until it becomes clear one of them is a murderer. But which one? autobiographical cookbooks about bayou Cajun culture in the mid-20th century. Within these books, Jim recounts the stories, adventures, and harsh lessons of life experienced by a group of people often adjacent to (but rarely the focus of) national attention: The Acadian diaspora who settled in the salt marshes of Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. The bayou Cajuns of this region lived rough, humble, unheralded lives far removed from the cosmopolitan Creole Cajun culture of New Orleans that often comes to mind in modern popular culture.

The journey through the Sandcastle’s domain reveals treasure both physical and spiritual. D. As the summer heats up, the bureau cuts ties with a valuable source of information, leaving the Galveston Weather Office blind during the peak of hurricane season. When a telegram warns of a storm in the gulf, Alfred will have to choose between following protocol or trusting his instincts. Whitney Vandiver is an avid reader who wrote her first story when she was eight years old. She is now a bibliophile, with more books than shelves, who writes historical fiction and mysteries. She resides in Pearland, Texas with her spouse and cat.

At Galveston Arts Center This Month:
“Erin Curtis’ Night and Day” Opening August 24th at Galveston Arts Center
On view August 24th-November 17th is “Erin Curtis’ Night and Day.” There will be an Opening Reception Saturday, August 24th, 6-9pm with an Artist Talk at 6:30pm. This is free to attend. Curtis’ exhibition includes recent large-scale paintings that are dense with color and pattern. Her layered, cut-canvas works contain disrupted surfaces and reflect an interest in geometric abstraction and its historical roots in weaving, architecture, nature, and ritual. The paintings in “Night and Day” are nearly overwhelmed by an unreadable chaos that is pulled back to the edge of order by familiar patterns and forms. The exhibition will be on view through November 17th, 2019. Erin Curtis is an artist living and working in Austin, Texas. Curtis’s work combines utopian ideals of beauty and structure, with process and chance. Primarily working as a painter, she also creates large-scale, site-specific installations and public art projects. She has received grants from the Dallas Museum of Art, the Andy Warhol Foundation, the City of Austin and the District of Columbia. Curtis has had solo shows at Conduit Gallery, Dallas, TX (2017), CalPoly, San Luis Obispo, California (2016), Big Medium Gallery, Austin, Texas (2015) and Flashpoint Gallery, Washington, DC (2015). She has created commissioned works for the Chicago Transit Authority, the City of Washington D.C., Facebook, Art in Embassies, and the City of Austin. In the summer of 2019, a 20- foot tall cut brick mural commissioned by Intelligentsia Coffee will be installed in downtown Austin. Curtis attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2010 and was awarded residencies at Anderson Ranch (2012) and Vermont Studio Center (2014). In 2008-2009, Curtis was a Fulbright Scholar in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Curtis graduated from Williams College with a BA in Liberal Arts in 1999 and received her MFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007. For more info go to erinelizabethcurtis.com. These exhibitions are supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. GAC is the organizer of ArtWalk, which takes place every six weeks in downtown Galveston. August 24th, October 12th, November 30th (6-9pm): ARTWALK - For over 25 years, the Galveston Arts Center has organized ArtWalk on eight Saturday evenings each year in the heart of Galveston’s historic district. ArtWalk takes place inside existing art galleries (both commercial and non-profit) and other spaces such as cafes and shops that showcase rotating art exhibits. One of the Galveston Arts Center’s largest programs, ArtWalk supports the arts community and connects a diverse assortment of local places to see, learn about and purchase original art. August 2nd-3rd (1pm-4pm): 2 Day Taiguruma Kids’ Workshop - Taiguruma are the traditional Japanese fish-shaped lantern on wheels, and making them is a favorite children’s’ pastime during an annual celebration in Niigata, Japan, a sister city of Galveston. The people of Niigata love spreading the word about this custom, and visitors from the city will conduct this workshop, which will be conducted at an elementary level for children 10 and up. This class cost is $85. Every Tuesday (6-8pm): Ceramic Studio - Learn hand-building techniques in pottery, figurative sculpture, and glazing with earthenware clay. Create sculptural relief tiles, full 3-D sculpture, functional pottery and tableware, figures, and more. This course uses ancient methods that don’t require a potter’s wheel, including coil construction and slab-construction. Fees are $50 for two sessions or $75 for four sessions. Join at any time! Every Wednesday (6-7:30pm): Life Drawing Studio - Drawing the human figure from a live model is the foundation of nearly all studio art programs. If you have an interest in portrait painting, character design, comics/manga, game design, illustration, animation, fashion design, medical illustration, or just learning to “see” like an artist, this is for you! Live models pose for short “gestures” and longer poses of up to 90 minutes. Sessions are $15 and 3-month passes are available for $100. Every Thursday (5:30-7:30pm): Fiber Arts Studio - This is a new studio program with Rachael Montemayor. Explore the rich world of fiber art with local artist and fashion designer Rachael Montemayor. Learn and be inspired to make objects, wearable art, and décor from fibers such as wool, silk, linen, driftwood, and repurposed materials by wet felting, weaving, crocheting, and knotting. A large supply of natural fibers and textiles are available through this program. This course is for 3 weeks. Cost is $25 per day and materials are provided.
August 11th (12 noon-7pm): Princess Samitha Artist Auction & Cancer Benefit - “Our beloved Princess Samitha has a battle that she’s fighting very hard to keep ahead of. We want to celebrate all of her joys and hold onto her for all the hard times too. This event is a celebration of the fun and loving community that she has built with her art and her gallery dreams. This is a day of love!” There will be a live auction and fundraiser for Samitha Edwards to help bear the burden of the treatments. Musical host will be Catherine Stroud. There will also be a Silent Auction with items, all created by artists in the Galveston community. All auction items will be identified on a card and added into the event. Live auction items will be paid upon final bid being accepted even if you have a phone advocate bidding for you. Silent Auction items will be biddable all evening until 7pm. Joseph C. Henderson is Featured Artist in August The Galveston Art League Gallery is located at 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston. For more info go to GalvestonArtLeague.com. As a child, award-winning artist Joseph C. Henderson liked to paint. But Henderson – the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist for August – didn’t start painting seriously until moving to Galveston about five years ago. For three decades before that, Henderson, now 63, was a registered architect — which could explain why he likes to include famous city landmarks in his paintings. He also enjoys painting beaches and boats. Henderson’s passion for art began when he was in middle school, with the youngster often painting in his family’s Indianapolis basement. Family, friends, and a very strong art faculty in high school were highly supportive. He began painting with watercolors but now works in acrylic on panel or canvas. Henderson says his painting process is typical: He begins with an underpainting layer of burnt sienna and then he sketches the subject while working from photographs. He develops the scene with additional darker tones, eventually adding color and adjusting colors as the painting develops.
Henderson believes artists should keep their minds open: “Explore new styles, subject matter, and media. Embrace the unexpected when you work. An unintended effect might completely alter the piece you are working on, often with great results.” He has won several awards in Galveston Art League juried competitions, including McGivney Purchase Awards in 2017 and 2018. (Those paintings are now part of the Rosenberg Library’s permanent art collection.) Pictured is the “Heye House,” a painting by Joseph C. Henderson, was a McGivney winner in a Galveston Art League competition. It’s now in the permanent collection of the Rosenberg Library in Galveston.

The Galveston Symphony Orchestra provides quality classical music, inspiring audiences and musicians alike with a strong commitment to artistic excellence and community involvement. Sunday, March 15th (4pm) Experience the world premiere of a new work, “Piano Concerto No. 2” by GSO Conductor Trond Saeverud’s father, the prolific Norwegian composer Ketil Hvoslef (four-time recipient of the Norwegian Society of Composers’ “Work of the Year” award) with pianist Andrew Staupe. ANDREW STAUPE is emerging as one of the distinctive voices of a new generation of pianists. In 2012 Andrew made his Carnegie Hall debut to critical acclaim: “Staupe gave a brilliant performance, handling the virtuosic demands with apparent ease… I was stunned- this was one of the most incredible performances… A once in a lifetime performance!” (NY Concert Review). Balakirev, Tamara; Hvoslef, Piano Concerto No. 2 (World Premiere), Andrew Staupe, piano; and Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique” will be performed.
Masterworks Concert: Pines of Rome Sunday, April 19th (4pm) Peter Verhoyen is principal piccolo for the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra. He teaches piccolo at the Royal Flemish Conservatories of Antwerp and Brussels. Together with Stefaan Craeynest, he is the co-founder of Arco Baleno, a chamber music ensemble consisting of string quartet and flute. Peter has made several CDs as well as various radio recordings. Lili Boulanger, D’un Matin de Printemps, arr. JoAnn Falletta & Terrie Baune; Haydn, Symphony No. 94; Vivaldi, Piccolo Concerto in C | Peter Verhoyen, piccolo; and Respighi, Pines of Rome will be performed.

Jason Crabtree: Trading Pine Trees For an Island Breeze By Johnny Griffith
Jason Crabtree grew up running around the hills and hollers of East Texas. It was there he discovered a love of music, people, and using the former to build relationships with the latter. A graduate of Gladewater High School, Jason spent the last several years on and around stages in the Piney Woods where his soulful style of country music and distinctive baritone voice won over plenty of fans. Recently, however, Jason and his family decided to take their talents to the beach and relocated to Galveston where he has quickly become a regular on stages and patios across the island. We recently caught up to him to find out a little more about his background and what he’s been doing since he got here: Johnny: When did you first become interested in music? Jason: At a very early age, probably around 7 or 8. I can remember singing in the car along with Garth Brooks, George Strait, Alan Jackson, and many others. I loved driving my parents crazy with my off key singing. Johnny: What was the one thing in music that grabbed you early and wouldn’t let go? Jason: Honestly, I was a big fan of the Sunday country countdowns. I used to lock myself in a closet around the age of 12, with a handheld recorder and I’d record myself singing along with all the greats. I was really just drawn to country early on and all of the emotions behind the music and lyrics. Johnny: Was it always guitar for you or is that where you landed eventually? Jason: Yeah it was always guitar for me. I just wish I’d started playing at a much younger age. I didn’t start actually learning to play until I was 20 years old. Johnny: What were some of your early musical influences? Jason: George Strait, Garth Brooks, The Judds, Alan Jackson. Even bands such as U2 and Guns N’ Roses I really enjoyed. Johnny: When did you start writing music? Jason: I started writing really soon after picking up guitar, so around 21 years old. I still don’t consider myself much of a writer but I do have a passion for it. Johnny: Where do you draw from for source material for your original stuff? Jason: Most of my life I’ve felt like I’ve lived a long country song. I’ve been through many hard times in life, and also, many great uplifting times. So I mainly just draw from life experiences. I know that’s probably a bit of a vague answer, but it’s true. Johnny: When did you figure out this music life was for you? Jason: Probably when I toured with Neal McCoy for 2 years. I admired not only his amazing voice, but how he could just have an audience eating out of the palm of his hands. He is an amazing person and entertainer. I could only hope to be that type of entertainer someday, but I know I have that personality and leadership to be just like him. Johnny: You’re originally from Northeast Texas, what brought you to Galveston? Jason: I’ve always wanted to live on an island! No, seriously though it just seemed like the best fit for my wife and I and our young family. I never imagined I’d have been as welcomed and made
so many so many good friends that I’ve met since we’ve been here. It’s truly the most laid back, supportive, and friendly people I’ve ever been around. I have actually been looking for full-time work in Texas City but for now music has been amazing for us. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you playing these days? Jason: Recently I’ve been playing up to 5 times per week. I try to play as often as I can pick up a gig. Johnny: How much of your set list is original versus cover? What is the favorite cover to do? Jason: Honestly in the music settings down here, I’d say 90% is covers. I’ll throw in a few originals but being a touristy atmosphere I like to keep it mostly to songs everyone is familiar with. Probably my favorite cover song to play is George Strait “Unwound” or Keith Whitley “Tell Lorrie I Love Her”. Johnny: Are you primarily performing as a solo artist or are you sitting in with other musicians? Jason: Primarily, yes, just solo but I have sat in with a few other artists and it’s been very enjoyable. I even get to sit in with my brother, Jaredd Reed, who is the front man for the Brush Poppers, and they have a very good following in the area. Also, I’ve had the pleasure of playing some song swaps with Mr. David Richardson. Like I stated before, everyone really works together to find work down here even if it means sharing the earnings. Johnny: How would you describe your original music stylistically and how did that process develop over the years? Jason: I’m a really big fan of Keith Whitley and George Strait so I like to write heartfelt touching music similar to what these greats have performed all of their lives. Music from the heart that touches people and pulls on the heart strings. Johnny: What has been your best memory so far in your musical journey? Jason: I’ve opened for so many great artists over the last ten-plus years. Those have been very memorable moments for me. I’ve opened for greats like Neal McCoy, Michael Martin Murphy, Radney Foster, Gary P. Nunn, Brandon Rhyder, Jamie Richards, and many others. These were great times, but honestly sharing the stage with my fellow “ankle biting” musician friends have truly been the most memorable for me. Like the time myself and Dempsey Pullen played a four and a half hour show and never took a break. Those are the moments you really remember. Johnny: Where can people find you performing over the next couple of months? Jason: I have a standing weekly show with David Richardson at Brewchachos on the Strand. I’m also playing numerous shows for my great friends at the Huli Huli Hut on 19th Street. I have a show coming up at 3 Doors Down bar on the 17th with my brother Jaredd Reed. I’m in the process of booking many other shows at venues such as the Drunken Monkeyz, The Playground, Poop Deck, Bubbas on the Strand, and many other venues in Galveston. Johnny: What is on your radar for the rest of 2019 that has you excited? Jason: In truth, just playing as many shows as I possibly can and getting my name out there. The Galveston Beach Band, founded by Frank Incaprera’s father, has been providing concerts for over 90 years. Frank, the band leader, has been attending concerts since he was four months old! And some members of the band have been part of the band for 40+ years. FREE concert times are every Tuesday evening, 7-10pm. The concert location is at Sealy Pavilion off Broadway and in front of the Rosenberg Library in downtown Galveston. The Galveston Beach Band concerts play a wide variety of music drawing from Jazz, shows, and music of its time. Starting in the 1920’s, the Galveston Beach Band free concerts were an important summer Island attraction, often boasting audiences of 2,000 and featured on the newspaper’s front page. By the 1960s the Band had declined but was then revitalized, thanks to its core of loyal musicians and then new leader, Frank Incaprera. Fast forward to today and the free concerts continue, as much loved as ever. Now a proudly family venue, the concerts are a diverse mix of much-loved show tunes, big band numbers, and jazz. Frank Incaprera is the driving force behind the Galveston Beach Band. From annual quests for funding to music selection, conducting, and playing solos, Frank is front and center stage. He is a man of monumental commitment and under his nearly 50-year leadership, the summer concerts continue to bring pleasure to so many. In 2014 Frank celebrated his 90th birthday.
