To Do The Grand 1894 Opera House:

“Bandstand” And “Once” On Stage The Grand 1894 Opera House is located at 2020 Postoffice St. in Galveston’s historic Downtown Cultural Arts District. Tickets are available by contacting The Grand’s box office at (409)765-1894, (800)821-1894, or go to thegrand.com.

“Bandstand”

Saturday, November 9th (3pm and 8pm) From three-time Tony winner and “Hamilton” choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler comes an inspiring new American musical that explodes with infectious music and high-octane, heart-stopping dancing. It’s 1945 and six soldiers return from war to a changed nation. They form a band unlike any the nation has ever seen, and along the way, discover the power of music to face the impossible, find their voice, and finally feel like they have a place to call home. “The show defies you not to be moved.” (Time Out New York) Tickets are $38-$108.

“Once: The Musical”

Saturday, November 16th (8pm) and Sunday, November 17th (3pm) Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “ONCE” is a truly original Broadway experience. It tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. Emotionally captivating and theatrically breathtaking, “ONCE” draws you in from the very first note and never lets go. It’s an unforgettable story about going for your dreams…not living in fear…and the power of music to connect all of us. Tickets are $38-$108.

An Evening with Willie Nelson & Family

Tuesday, November 19th (7:30pm) Willie’s “On the Road Again,” and his performance at The Grand is sure to be a highlight of this legendary anniversary season. Recognized worldwide as a singer, songwriter, actor, and activist, Willie has penned more than 2,500 songs and released close to 300 albums. His five-decades career has included countless Grammys, American Music Awards, and Country Music Awards. Don’t be “Crazy” – order your tickets to see this legendary artist today! This event is sold out at the present time. Due to cancellations, watch for any last minute tickets at thegrand.com.

Vienna Boys Choir: Christmas in Vienna

Friday, November 22nd (8pm) Boys have been singing at Vienna’s Imperial Chapel since 1296. Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn, and Franz Schubert were themselves choir boys. Today, there are 100 choristers between the ages of nine and fourteen, divided into four touring groups. The Choir’s repertoire includes everything from medieval to contemporary and experimental music. Motets and lieder for boys’ choirs form the core of the touring repertoire, as do the Choir’s own arrangements of quintessentially Viennese music like waltzes and polkas. This will be a delightful evening for all ages. This project is sponsored in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and Texas Commission on the Arts. Tickets are $25-$75.

Jaston Williams: “BLOOD & Holly – A West Texas Family Christmas”

Saturday, November 23rd (8pm) and Sunday, November 24th (2pm) In this latest, hysterical offering from our friend Jaston Williams, “Blood” in the title refers to his family blood-line and all that means to his world. Jaston describes Christmastime during his childhood as a skittish mishmash of life on “Rebecca’s Sunnybrook Farm” and frequent side excursions into Franco’s Spain. Hear about the life-damaging Santa Claus experience, the Christmas tree that caused the cat to have a nervous collapse, and what it was like every Christmas to be one of four people in the room with the same first name. You’ll also spend time with the fictional Hugger Family, whose Christmas wish list includes new teeth for the old folks, knives for the kiddies, and a better criminal attorney for Darlette. For those who need to know, find out why it’s a bad idea to flock a Christmas tree inside the house. Tickets are $30-$72.

Merry Christmas from The Doo Wop Project

Saturday, November 30th (8pm) The Doo Wop Project (DWP ) begins at the beginning, tracing the evolution of Doo Wop from the classic sound of five guys singing tight harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today. In their epic shows, DWP takes audiences on a journey from foundational tunes of groups like the Crests, Belmonts, and Flamingos through their influences on the sounds of Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, and The Four Seasons, all the way to “DooWopified” versions of modern musicians like Michael Jackson, Jason Mraz, and

presentation about the ballet and meet the dancers. This special presentation is included with your ticket to the Saturday or Sunday matinee performance! Tickets are $19-$50 to any of the performances.

The 5 Browns: “Holiday”

Maroon 5. Celebrate the holidays with a whole new array of Doo Wop music! Tickets are $25-$85.

Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”

Friday, December 6th (8pm) and Saturday, December 7th (3pm) Charles Dickens’ timeless tale of hope and redemption has enchanted audiences around the world since it was first published in 1843 – even before The Grand was built! Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future come together in a delightful theatrical performance featuring stunning sets, lush costumes, and plenty of music and dance. With beloved traditional carols of the season included, it’s an enchanting event for the entire family.

“The Nutcracker” on Stage and Afternoon Tea

Please note: Tickets to the Nutcracker Afternoon Tea do not include seats to a performance of “The Nutcracker.” Performance tickets must be purchased separately. City Ballet of Houston proudly returns to The Grand 1894 Opera House with its production of “The Nutcracker!” An annual holiday favorite, audiences of all ages will delight in the story of a young girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince, a Sugar Plum Fairy and a fierce battle against a Mouse King. Saturday, December 21st (8pm) Performing individually or together in various combinations from duo to complex five-piano arrangements, The 5 Browns are delivering on their dream to wake up classical music by introducing it to their audiences. One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years! These young musicians are legends in the making! This project is sponsored in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and Texas Commission on the Arts. Tickets are $25-$75.

“Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical”

Saturday, December 28th (1pm and 4pm) Following five successful years of touring and more than 500 performances, the “most famous reindeer of all” from the longest running and highest rated holiday television special will fly into The Grand with “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical.” You’ll be charmed by Rudolph and a holly jolly cast of iconic characters including Hermey the Elf, Yukon Cornelius, and the Abominable Snow Monster who help Santa save Christmas. December 6th-8th at Galveston Island’s Strand National Historic Landmark District:

46th Annual Dickens On The Strand Returns For 46 years, Galveston Historical Foundation’s (GHF) Dickens on The Strand festival has highlighted downtown Galveston’s Victorian-era architecture while providing a one-of-a-kind holiday destination filled with the sights and sounds of Charles Dickens’ work. This year’s event continues that tradition with new entertainers and events, returning favorites, and family-friendly programming. This annual festival begins Friday, December 6th with free admission to Fezziwig’s Beer Hall from 5-9pm, and continues with ticketed entry Saturday, December 7th from 10am-9pm, and Sunday, December 8th from 12 noon-6pm. Tickets purchased before December 2nd are $13 for adults and $7 for children ages 7-12. Tickets purchased at the gate are $15 for adults and $9 for youth. Discounted tickets for GHF members are available for $10 in advance or $12 at the gate. Tickets are available online at dickensonthestrand.org, by calling (409)765-7834 or at all area Randall’s stores beginning mid-November. Attendees in Victorian costumes receive $8 entry. “There is something about the spirit of Dickens on The Strand that sets the pace for a great holiday season,” states GHF Executive Director Dwayne Jones. “It is always fun and enlivening to partake of the festivities and recall the great literary work of Charles Dickens. Come join the street entertainment, food and craft vendors, and traditional drink of old London.” The annual holiday street festival, based on 19th-century Victorian London, features parades, non-stop entertainment on multiple stages, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers, and a host of other entertainers. Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations, and gift items. Three descendants of Charles Dickens will grace the festival as GHF welcomes Oliver ‘Ollie’ Dickens, a great-great-great-grandson; Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, a great-great-great-granddaughter; and Jane Dickens Monk, a great-great-granddaughter. All descendants will be at numerous events throughout the weekend.

Only the efforts of six farsighted pioneer breeders kept these animals from fading out of ranching history. Anita Butler, the granddaughter of Milby Butler, will share the story of her family’s commitment to returning the Longhorn to prominence and establishing the bloodlines of the famous Butler Texas Longhorns. This amazing comeback is a little known but compelling chapter in the story of the American West. Items and photos from the Butler Longhorn Museum will document the history of this legendary cattle breed. November 16th (4-6pm): Lecture Series: The Fall and Rise of the Texas Rangers: The Untold History Behind “The Highwaymen” and East Texas Troubles - Dr. Jody Edward Ginn, Adjunct Associate Professor of History at Austin Community College will present a joint presentation on his new book “East Texas Troubles: The Allred Rangers Cleanup of San Augustine” and his work as a historical consultant for publicity on the blockbuster new Netflix Original Film, “The Highwaymen” about the men who pursued Bonnie and Clyde. November 23rd (1-4pm): “Smoky Mountain Music” Gallery Presentation - Enjoy an afternoon with the North Harris County Dulcimer Society as they share the history and beautiful lilting sounds

of traditional music played upon this truly unique American instrument. From hazy origins, the dulcimer first appeared in the early 1800s in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia in areas settled by the British, the Scottish, and the Irish. The word “Dulcimer” comes from the Greek meaning “sweet song” and it is indeed a pleasure to listen to its lovely melodies. November 30th (1-4pm): “Artistic Impressions” Gallery Presentations - Enjoy a unique and fascinating glimpse behind the artist’s brush. American Impressionist artist Randall Kirby Cogburn will be doing 30-minute live gesture portrait sessions and sharing his knowledge and adventures of life as an artist. Whether in his studio or on location, his works reflect the tradition of the original Impressionist painters emphasizing loose and precise brushwork, vivid color, and the importance of light. Visit RandallCogburn.com/events for information on scheduling a portrait session. December 15th (10am-5pm): Holiday Delights: A Lone Star Christmas - All trails will lead to The Bryan Museum and converge under the Lone Star for a day of purely Texas festivities, music, holiday foods, and of course Santa. And what could be more Texas than Santa’s two lead Longhorns arriving just in time for a few photos before heading back to the Ranch to get ready for the big night? Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Warm yourself at the Cowboy Campfire for some hot chocolate, enjoy the beautifully decorated Museum galleries, hunt for Santa’s 12 Missing Mischievous Elves, delicious Texas holiday goodies, and much more!

Eagle is an accomplished art car artist whose cars Our Lady of Transportation and Rosebud have received awards at the Houston Art Car Parade. For more info on the artist, go to ambereagle.studio. For more information on this exhibition, please visit galvestonartscenter.org/exhibitions/ambereagle. Galveston Arts Center continues on exhibit “Undercover,” a solo exhibition by Venezuelan-born and Houston-based artist Gerardo Rosales. Rosales explores issues of class, race, gender, and immigration to expose social inequalities experienced by immigrants coming from Latin America to the United States. Rosales appropriates ornamental aspects of folk art and geometric abstraction, infiltrated with elements that evoke adversity faced by these individuals looking for a better life, only to find themselves facing similar conditions of social and economic exclusion. His paintings include rich colors and patterns that juxtapose the harshness of the wilderness of the tropics with domestic imagery. His works mix conflict with playfulness as a means to exaggerate reality with irony. The exhibition will be on view through January 5th, 2020. Also on view through November 17th is Erin Curtis’ “Night and Day” in the main gallery on the first floor. Curtis’ exhibition includes recent large-scale paintings that are dense with color and pattern. Her layered, cut-canvas works contain disrupted surfaces and reflect an interest in geometric abstraction and its historical roots in weaving, architecture, nature, and ritual. The paintings in “Night and Day” are nearly overwhelmed by an unreadable chaos that is pulled back to the edge of order by familiar patterns and forms. The exhibition will be on view through November 17th. For more info go to erinelizabethcurtis.com. These exhibitions are supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Commission on the Arts. The galleries are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-5pm, and Sunday 12 noon-5pm. Admission is free at all times.

Saturday, November 16th (2-4pm): “The San Marcos 10” by E. R. Bills

Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with returning author E. R. Bills and his book covering a Vietnam Era student protest in Texas. On November 13, 1969, ten students at Texas State University were suspended for participating in a peaceful protest against the Vietnam War. They had kept vigil in front of the Huntington Mustangs, bearing signs that read “Vietnam Is an Edsel” and “44,000 U.S. Dead, For What?” while an increasingly hostile anti-protest crowd chanted, “Love it or leave it!” and “Let’s string ‘em up!” It was a day after news of the My Lai massacre broke. Part of a coordinated, nationwide Vietnam Moratorium effort that confounded and infuriated the Nixon White House, the “San Marcos 10” challenged their suspension, taking their case all the way to the United States Supreme Court. Author E.R. Bills offers this fascinating glimpse into the 1960s antiwar movement in Texas, the extraordinary measures to quell it, and the broader social activism in which it participated.

Alfred finds himself thrust into the strained relationship of renowned climatologist Isaac Cline and his assisting brother, Joseph. With rising tensions in the office, Alfred begins to expand life beyond his duties at the bureau and soon meets the extraordinary Florence Keller. As the summer heats up, the bureau cuts ties with a valuable source of information, leaving the Galveston Weather Office blind during the peak of hurricane season. When a telegram warns of a storm in the gulf, Alfred will have to choose between following protocol or trusting his instincts. Whitney Vandiver is an avid reader who wrote her first story when she was eight years old. She is now a bibliophile, with more books than shelves, who writes historical fiction and mysteries. Music Will Not Bend The Knee:

The One & Only Gabe Wootton By Tena Jerger, Charles Toft “Original minds are not distinguished by being the first to see a new thing, but instead by seeing the old, familiar thing that is overlooked as something new.” - Friedrich Nietzsche Can a singer-songwriter be an unsung hero? Gabe Wootton is one of the stalwart figures keeping the reach of Texas country-folk music alive, a familiar face in small rooms around the state and a man whose deceptively simple tunes always pack an emotional punch. “From the piney woods of East Texas to the flat lands outside Lubbock, from the rolling prairies of Central Texas to the sandy shores of the Virgin Islands, Gabe Wootton has covered more than a few miles. With an eye on the horizon and an ear in the wind, he has found melody in the mundane and rhyme in the hum of life. A sketch of scenes in passing, character studies of the broken and the jubilant, triumphant tales of ruin to joyful lamentations of woe, Gabe’s songs run the gamut incorporating elements of all the music he has stumbled upon throughout his life.” (Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe website) Wootton is appreciated all over Texas, but Galveston is something of a home away from home due to his frequent appearances at Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe, where he hosts a monthly songwriters’ gathering. It provides him the opportunity to not only get his own music out in front of an audience, but to put his personality to work as a host, colleague, and mentor. Wootton’s next appearance at Old Quarter will be November 29th, at which time he will be making a live recording. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. They include a Gabe Wooton t-shirt and a digital copy of the recording when it’s released. Gabe Wootton spoke to Galveston Island Guide recently about his philosophy of music, songwriting, and work. Island Guide: Where are you from? Wootton: Ponta, Texas. Island Guide: How “I’ve always enjoyed long have you been playing music. It’s one of the most music? Wootton: Off and on, powerful things almost 20 years. I am a solo that most take for granted. performer mostly. Island Guide: Describe The ruthless use it to your style of music, your progress propaganda. sound, for someone who has never heard you. The lonely use it for Wootton: I am not into company. The exuberant categorization but I am an use it as a soundtrack. The Americana acoustic, singer/ songwriter country/folk/ lonely use it as a friend. blues all bundled up in one It is truly whatever you - a mix of country, blues and pop that leans heavy on the need it to be. I use it as folk songwriting traditions. self expression.” Island Guide: Describe a live show for someone who hasn’t had the honor of seeing you. Wootton: My shows are very spontaneous and informal. I don’t use set lists. Instead, I build a rapport with the audience by telling stories and reacting to their reactions to previous songs - sometimes sad, sometimes uplifting, most times humorous. Island Guide: Tell us about your Songwriter Swaps and such, plus this Live Recording at Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe. Wootton: I host a monthly songwriter showcase at The Old Quarter where myself and guest(s) take turns playing songs and telling stories. It’s always a unique show because we willingly follow whatever tangents arise. Some new song by one or the other spawns a whole change in

course or conversation. It’s a unique and intimate look at songs, and songwriting, without the rigors of a “show.” Island Guide: How old were you when you fell in love with music? How did you get started in music? And who were your influences, when, where, ages, etc… What got you started? Wootton: I’ve always enjoyed music. It’s one of the most powerful things that most take for granted. The ruthless use it to progress propaganda. The lonely use it for company. The exuberant use it as a soundtrack. The lonely use it as a friend. It is truly whatever you need it to be. I use it as self expression. When I stumbled upon writers like Kris Kristofferson and John Prine, it didn’t feel like listening to music, more like having a conversation with someone. I gravitated to writers like Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, and Tom Waits. They taught me that not only was it okay to not care about categorization, it was actually the ONLY way to go. When I started playing guitar in college, I found it easier to write my own songs than it was to learn covers. Plus, nobody could tell when I messed up the lyrics. I used those guys as teachers and just tried to write good songs, regardless of the current trend or fashion. Island Guide: Was there a point in your life where you decided that playing music was going to be your career? Tell me the story of how that decision came about. Wootton: Well, career implies a whole can of worms that I don’t have the stomach to go into, but soon after I started playing shows I knew that I had ruined myself for proper employment. To chase the dream of being a “Star” requires bending the knee to the powers that be and becoming whatever Boo Ballou puppet they’re trying to sell. That’s not my gig. I try to write the best songs I can, and choose not to play that Boo Ballou game. So, I’ll work construction or whatever to pay rent. Island Guide: Do you play covers and originals? Wootton: I play 99% original songs in my shows. Any covers that I do play are paying homage to my influences and act only as an introduction to them for those who may have never heard their music. I’ll leave learning the ever changing Top 40 cover songs to those other guys. Island Guide: Tell us how the songwriting process happens for you. Wootton: It depends. Sometimes it’s very intentional - sit down with a pen and some paper and guitar and hammer one out. Most of the time, for me, it’s very subconscious and comes and goes as it wants to. I try to always listen out the side of my head for songs to come slipping by and grab them before they’re gone. Sometimes I’ll kick a melody around for a long time before the words that go with it ever show up. I try not to force it, because you can totally hear it when that happens. Lyrics should sound like lyrics, not just words that happen to fit the rhyme scheme and syllable count.

Island Guide: What is your favorite song to perform and why? Wootton: Currently, it’s one called “Pretty As You Please,” because it’s just a really good song. Island Guide: What advice would you offer people who are just starting out? Everyone has a “first day.” Wootton: Learn who you are. Figure out what you sound like. Create and perform songs you enjoy playing. I believe we’ve hit our quota on cheap, knockoff, YouTube sensations. Do something original and true and it’ll never be wrong. Also, tune your guitar! Island Guide: If you could pick one band to see live, living or dead, who would it be? Wootton: Miles Davis sitting in with Beethoven. Island Guide: What was the first album you remember purchasing? Wootton: “The Return of Bruno” by Bruce Willis. Island Guide: What was the first concert you went to? Wootton: The Bluegrass Festival at Salmon Lake. Island Guide: What piece of music equipment can you simply not live without? Wootton: My brain. Island Guide: Years from now, what would you like to be doing? Wootton: Sleeping. Island Guide: If you could open up for any band right now, who would it be? Wootton: Gary Cherone-era Van Halen. Island Guide: Any big announcements for the rest of 2019 and 2020, big gigs, etc? Wootton: I will be recording a live record at The Old Quarter on the day after Thanksgiving. It will be my first commercial recording, so I guess I’ll buy a tour bus or something, maybe an El Camino. Island Guide: Where can people access your calendar, Facebook, website? Wooton: They can log on at GabeWootton.com and facebook.com/ gabewoottonmusic/. Island Guide: Any last words? Wootton: Trisha Yearwood.
