A Victorian Christmas Holiday Homes Tour

Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier:

Stroll back in time and experience a wonderful evening of historic homes festively decorated for the holiday season, and enjoy a variety of joyful holiday music. Four East End Historical District Homes will be featured on the tour, and the neighborhood will be teeming with the delightful sounds of the holidays.

Friday, December 6th, homes will be open 5:30-9:30pm. The tour will feature four East End Historical District homes festively decorated for the holiday season. Additionally, the EEHDA Cottage will be open for light refreshments, and guests will enjoy a variety of holiday music at the EEHDA’s Darragh Park, and at some of the residential locations.

This year’s Holiday Homes Tour includes 1402 Market St., 1426 Market St., 1527 Postoffice St., and 1602 Broadway. Additional locations are 402 18th St. - Historic Christ Chapel aka The Swedish Church, 1501 Postoffice St. - East End Historical District Association, and 15th & Church St. - Darragh Park.

The elegant historic homes of the East End Historical District are the architectural products of skilled European immigrants during a time when Galveston was the wealthiest city in Texas. These homes were designed for prosperous merchants and entrepreneurs wanting to display their wealth and impress their neighbors.

The cost of the tour is $25, and tickets are limited.

Tickets can be purchased at the East End Cottage, 1501 Postoffice St. Additional tickets may be purchased at the Cottage. After retrieving your tickets, you may start the tour at any of the tour locations beginning at 5:30pm on December 6th.

The proceeds of this event directly benefit the EEHDA and its continued efforts to preserve, protect and maintain the historic and architectural value of our neighborhood and historical sites, such as Darragh Park, Alderdice Park, and the East End Cottage.

Celebrate the Return of the Sandhill Cranes:

Holiday with the Cranes on Galveston Island

As Sandhill Cranes begin to arrive on Galveston Island to roost and forage for the winter, the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council celebrates their return with Holiday with the Cranes, December 14th-15th.

Holiday with the Cranes is an island experience like no other, offering nature enthusiasts a unique opportunity to spend a weekend observing and celebrating flocks of Sandhill Cranes that migrate through Galveston each winter.

Newly expanded weekend activities will include indoor and outdoor nature programs and presentations including field trips to see other resident and wintering birds.

The impressive three-to-four-foot tall Sandhill Cranes, known for their size and the bright red cap atop their heads, started arriving in Galveston in late October and will depart late February through early March. Last December, over 200 cranes were counted on the island.

There are 15 species of cranes around the world and only two are found in North America, the Whooping Crane, which is endangered, and the most abundant, Sandhill Crane.

Holiday with the Cranes provides opportunities for Gulf Coast winter birding, educational and entertaining learning, outdoor adventure, and nature photography. Events include: Coffee & Cranes with Keanna Leonard:

Back by popular demand, Keanna hails from central Nebraska, home to the largest gathering of Sandhill Cranes in the world. After breakfast and a lively presentation and discussion about “The Private Lives of the Sandhill Cranes,” you will embark on a self-driving tour to crane hotspots to see Sandhill Cranes as they forage and play. Viewing areas will be outfitted with spotting scopes, and local experts will be on hand to assist and answer questions.

This event is offered on Saturday only.

East End Winter Coastal Birding is an adventurous birding tour to a diverse habitat to see other wintering and resident birds. Offered both Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, the tour by bus will drive the loop roads and beach area around the East End Lagoon Nature Park and Preserve, East End Seawall Blvd., Boddecker Dr., and Apffel Park. Local avian experts will meet participants on-site and guide this ride/easy walking adventure designed for birders of all skill levels.

Winter Birding on the Isle’s West End: Traveling by bus, local field trip leaders will show you all of the favorite West End hotspots including freshwater ponds, coastal marshes, bay waters, and the beach. You’ll see Sandhill Crane, a number of species of ducks and hawks, White-tailed Kite; and you’ll get closer looks at sandpipers, gulls, terns, and American Oystercatcher. The

Brunch at Hotel Galvez is a family tradition for many guests. The hotel will begin taking Christmas Day Brunch reservations on Monday, December 2nd.

You’ll also have the opportunity to see Roseate Spoonbill, ibis, herons, ducks, grebes, rails, sparrows, cormorants, hawks, Osprey, and sandpipers along with the majestic Sandhill Cranes!

A Sold Out Christmas Train Ride:

The Polar Express at the Galveston Railroad Museum

Galveston Railroad Museum is located at 2602 Santa Fe Place, Downtown Galveston. The museum will be closed to the general public until January 6th, 2020 due to the Polar Express.

The Polar Express™ Train Ride is a theatrical re-creation of the classic children’s story onboard a real train.

Set to the soundtrack of the motion picture, passengers will relive the magic of the classic story as they are whisked away on the Polar Express for a magical onehour trip to meet Santa.

Passengers are served hot chocolate and a treat by dancing chefs, enjoy a reading of the book by Chris Van Allsburg, and receive the first gift of Christmas (a silver sleigh bell) after Santa boards the train to greet families.

Attendants lead passengers in caroling and fun holiday activities on the return trip to Galveston’s historic depot.

The Polar Express™ Train Ride in Galveston consists of six separate cars pulled by vintage locomotives from the Galveston Railroad Museum’s collection.

Onboard, you will be seated in either Coach or First Class according to your ticket purchase. Every guest will experience the same excitement and wonder of The Polar Express™ Train Ride.

These rides are held December 6th-8th, 13th-15th, 20th-22nd, 23rd, and 26th-29th.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday rides are at 5pm, 6:45pm, and 8:30pm. The Sunday matinee ride is at 3:15pm. Tickets prices are $27-$75. Tickets are available by calling (320)244-0213 or

The Polar Express™ is currently sold out but check for sporadic tickets due to cancellations.

Also, every Saturday (11am-2pm), fun Train Rides are available, weather permitting, on The Harborside Express, an open-air caboose that travels 1-mile up Harborside Dr., then returns to the Galveston Railroad Museum.

Boarding begins at 11am, with the last train ride departing the depot at 1:45pm.

Tickets are $5 in addition to admission to the Galveston Railroad Museum and must be purchased at the museum or at galvestonrrmuseum.org.

Galveston’s historic downtown district will host Downtown Lasers & Lights featuring new laser shows, a magical display of lights, and other holiday-themed attractions in Saengerfest Park and beyond. Highlights at Saengerfest Park include a 30-feet-tall Christmas tree and a giant snow globe for visitors to enjoy on weekends. In addition, lights will be hung on The Strand from 20th to 25th streets as well as along 23rd and Postoffice Streets. The 36-block district will sparkle with lasers and lights while visitors enjoy boutique shopping, dining, antiques, art galleries, and more. New this year, four-hour holiday laser shows synchronized to music will be projected on the American National Insurance Company Building on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through December 22nd. While in the area, visitors can tackle some of their holiday shopping at the district’s many gift shops, boutiques, art galleries, and antique shops set among beautiful Victorian architecture. This is free to attend.

December 27th & January 2nd: Wiggle, Giggle and Roll - This camp is totally about designing your very own Goofy Bot. As the creator of your bot, you will control every aspect of its development. Will your bot wiggle? Or will it wiggle and jiggle? Or will it simply just roll…it’s totally up to you! After completing training in Bot Basics 101, you will choose your materials, create your prototype and conduct your bot testing and redesign as required. Naming and decorating your bot is not required but highly recommended.

The Galveston Art League’s Featured Artists for December created their paintings and drawings at two Galveston facilities: Transitional Learning Community (TLC) at Galveston TideWay and Sunshine Training Center.

TideWay is an assisted living facility providing long-term care and rehabilitation services for adult survivors of brain injury.

Sunshine offers day rehabilitation, community support, and supportive employment for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Art activities are an integral part of the programming at both facilities. At TideWay, for instance, therapeutic art specialist Mary Arlis Fountain says art classes are designed to help clients overcome physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges.

At Galveston Arts Center This Month:

“Amber Eagle: Nap Dreams” Continues On Exhibit

On view through February 23rd at Galveston Arts Center will be “Amber Eagle: Nap Dreams.”

Amber Eagle is an artist based in Houston, TX and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. Eagle received an MFA from the California College of the Arts and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She was a Core Fellow with the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and has been an artist in residence at The Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito, CA, The McColl Center, Charlotte, NC, The Portland College of Arts and Crafts in Oregon, and Lawndale Art Center, Houston.

Eagle has spent extensive time in Mexico following an initial award from the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County to research fiestas and sugar sculpting traditions. Her work has been featured in exhibitions throughout North America and is included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Five Points Museum of Contemporary Art, Victoria, as well as public art installations in Houston’s East End and Cherryhurst House, Houston.

Eagle is an accomplished art car artist whose cars Our Lady of Transportation and Rosebud have received awards at the Houston Art Car Parade.

Galveston Arts Center continues on exhibit “Undercover,” a solo exhibition by Venezuelan-born and Houston-based artist Gerardo Rosales. Rosales explores issues of class, race, gender, and immigration to expose social inequalities experienced by immigrants coming from Latin America to the United States. Rosales appropriates ornamental aspects of folk art and geometric abstraction, infiltrated with elements that evoke adversity faced by these individuals

looking for a better life, only to find themselves facing similar conditions of social and economic exclusion. His paintings include rich colors and patterns that juxtapose the harshness of the wilderness of the tropics with domestic imagery. His works mix conflict with playfulness as a means to exaggerate reality with irony. The exhibition will be on view through January 5th, 2020.

These exhibitions are supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

Artist Boat’s mission is to promote awareness and preservation of coastal margins and the marine environment through the disciplines of the sciences and the arts. Artist Boat is thrilled to have served over 100,000 participants and to have conserved 690 acres of land on Galveston Island.

For over 25 years, the Galveston Arts Center has organized ArtWalk on eight Saturday evenings each year in the heart of Galveston’s historic district. ArtWalk takes place inside existing art galleries (both commercial and non-profit) and other spaces such as cafes and shops that showcase rotating art exhibits.

When George Mitchell died in 2013, The Economist proclaimed, “few businesspeople have done as much to change the world as George Mitchell,” a billionaire Texas oilman who defied the stereotypical swagger so identified with that industry. He did more than any other individual since John D. Rockefeller to alter the economics of oil. In “George P. Mitchell: Fracking, Sustainability, and an Unorthodox Quest to Save the Planet,” award-winning author Loren C. Steffy offers the first definitive biography of Mitchell, placing his life and legacy in a global context and highlighting the significance of his discoveries and the lingering controversies they inspired. In addition to his role in the oil and gas industry, Mitchell had a critical part in reviving Galveston’s historic Downtown and opened The Tremont House in 1985. MUSIC It’s “Everything I’ve Ever Wanted,” All the Way Down Deep in My Soul:

The Energetic & Rockin’ Hamilton Loomis

Born and raised in Galveston, Texas, Loomis is the son of musician parents who has listened to blues, rock, and soul his whole life.

Music ran in his veins and, with instruments readily available around the house, he picked up drums, piano, guitar, and harmonica early on, honing his multi-instrumental talent in addition to performing regularly as part of his family’s doo-wop group.

“My parents had a fantastic record collection, and, when I started writing, I gravitated towards what I’d been listening to all my life.

I have a huge reverence for the blues and all it encompasses, but I’ve always been fond of R&B and funky music.”

A protégé of Bo Diddley, Loomis met the icon backstage at the age of 16 at Houston’s famed venue Rockefeller’s. Before the night was over, Loomis was onstage playing guitar with the legend. Diddley quickly became friend, mentor, collaborator, and supporter, appearing on two of Loomis’ albums and presenting a cherished red guitar that he still plays. And as they say, the rest is history.

We recently went to see a concert of Loomis’ and found the quote, “Loomis’ energetic, get-inwith-the-crowd antics are infectious” very accurate. We sat down with Loomis to ask a few questions.

Island Guide: Where are you from?

Loomis: I was born and raised on the island.

I am a BOI. Island Guide: How long have you been playing music?

Loomis: Pretty much all my life. My parents are musicians, so there was always music and instruments in our home.

Island Guide: Describe your style of music, your sound, for someone who has never heard you.

Loomis: My music is a mixture of all my favorite music I listened to growing up: blues, funk, soul, rock, & pop.

Being comfortable on stage is something that comes entirely natural for me. I feel joy when I play music, and it moves me. It moves my body. I learned long ago that whenever music is coming from you, from deep inside your soul and from the right place, people will feel that on a deeper level and might not even know what’s going on inside of themselves. I enjoy playing, engaging the crowd, and feel a show should be an interactive experience.”

Island Guide: What genre of music do you consider your work to be?

Loomis: This is a tough question because I’m multi-genre. I think I’ve developed a hangup about people wanting to categorize music or stick it into one genre. As soon as you label an artist with one style, you prevent a lot of potential fans

from listening to your music. However, at least that’s one good thing about certain streaming services: they cross genres and give subscribers suggestions that may not be exactly what they would go for - too bad those streaming services only pay pennies to artists - but it’s the way of the future, and you do gain new fans.

Island Guide: Your music is described by Blues Blast Magazine as “a non-stop turbo of power, one minute moving from side to side of the stage, and then taking on the horn player in a head-cutting contest on the apron of the stage the next minute.” What does that mean to you personally?

Loomis: Ha! Well, honestly it’s just describing some of the stuff my band and I like to do onstage. I like to engage the audience a lot. I like to go out and play in the crowd to make people feel closer to the artist. I like to put quotes from other famous songs into my own, to keep people trying to figure out what we’re going to do next. When I do a long guitar solo, it’s totally directed by the audience’s reactions and facial expressions.

I guess it’s another way of making the audience feel like they’re a part of what’s going on onstage.

Island Guide: How old were you when you fell in love with music?

How did you get started in music? And who were your influences? In other words, what got you started.

Loomis: My parent’s record collection definitely got me exposed to a lot of great music at an early age, plus the fact that they were musicians was a plus too. It was a great environment as a youngster to learn how to play instruments.

Also, that one night, when I met Bo Diddley, it began my education, and I spent a lot of time with Bo over the years listening to him tell so many stories. He was so generous, and most people don’t know that he was really philanthropic.

He played free concerts around his hometown for homeless shelters, schools and anyone that just needed help. He was always giving! That’s another thing that planted the GIVE IT BACK seed in my mind. It’s all coming full circle now for me.

Island Guide: Was there a point in your life where you decided that playing music was going to be your career? Tell us the story of how that decision came about.

Loomis: I remember when I was about 12 years old, I sold my dirt bike so I could have the money to buy a multitrack recorder.

I think that was the big turning point.

Island Guide: Do you play covers and originals?

Loomis: I do a few covers in my show, but mostly it’s my originals from my CDs. Island Guide: Tell us how your songwriting process happens.

Loomis: That’s another tough one. I don’t think I have one process for songwriting. Some songs begin with a great line, some begin with a great groove, and others start with a topic that I want to write about or needs to be written about. For me, I guess every song is different, and it’s just a matter of coming up with music that fits the lyrics, or lyrics that fit the vibe of the music. It’s different for every song.

Island Guide: What is your favorite song to perform and why?

Loomis: I think my favorite one to perform on stage is “Bow Wow,” which is a tribute to Houston’s own Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson. It’s the one song that I do an extended guitar solo out in the crowd on, and it is directed and influenced by the audience’s reactions. I never know what’s going to happen on that song, but it’s such a treat when the audience is a part of what you’re doing.

Island Guide: What advice would you offer people who are just starting, either individually, or as a band? Everyone has a “first day.”

Loomis: Be dedicated, be professional, be the best at what you do. Don’t skimp on the recordings you put out there. If you have to spend money on a great studio or a great producer, it’s worth the investment because once you put something out there, it’s there forever.

Island Guide: Our questions that we ask everyone: if you could pick one band to see live, living or dead, who would it be?

Loomis: I’m fortunate because I got to see Prince and Stevie Wonder live, two of my favorite artists of all time. It would have been great to see Hendrix in his heyday.

Island Guide: What was the first album you remember purchasing?

Loomis: I think the first album I ever bought was Stevie Ray Vaughan “Couldn’t Stand the Weather,” on vinyl!

Island Guide: What was the first concert you went to?

Loomis: My first concert was the Beastie Boys on their “Licensed to Ill” tour. I was 11, and they were beyond vulgar...my dad, who took me, was absolutely livid!

Island Guide: What is the one piece of musical equipment you cannot live without?

Loomis: I have this Shop-Vac nozzle for my harmonica, and it gives me that great big fat harmonica tone. It’s one of a kind, and they don’t make them in that size anymore, so if I ever lost it I would be screwed!

Island Guide: Any big announcements for 2019-2020, big gigs, new music, new CD’s, etc.?

Loomis: I just released my very first Christmas CD, “This Season,” which is available on my website at hamiltonloomis.com. It’s got five new original Christmas songs that I’ve written along with five holiday classics that I put my spin on.

Travis Linville Acoustic at St. Joseph’s Church

Held at the 1859 St. Joseph’s Church, 2202 Avenue K, in Galveston, noted musician and songwriter Travis Linville will perform January 15th at 7pm. Tickets are $20 and available on eventbrite.com.

There’s something inexplicably authentic about Oklahoma’s Travis Linville, and it’s carried him from dive bars and classrooms to “The Tonight Show” and esteemed theaters and festivals across the globe.

Linville is legendary regionally as a guitarist and solo artist as well as his work in the Burtschi Brothers, and his behind-the-scenes Oklahoma influence includes producing early recordings for John Fullbright and Parker Millsap. The “Oklahoma Gazette” rightly called him a “godfather of modern Oklahoma folk” and noted that his success opened doors for a state teeming with talent.

Independently, Linville has sold thousands of albums and played thousands of shows across his 20-plus year career, with an ever-evolving repertoire deeply rooted in songcraft, sly humor and subtlety. He’s currently at work on a new full-length album with producer JD McPherson.

NPR Music chose first single “Wishes” for its Heavy Rotation feature, noting that “the relatable tune, paced by steady percussion and accented by crying pedal steel, focuses on those ever-escaping moments as folks weave in and out of our lives.”

Featured this month is the concert December 27th with a Galveston favorite, Two Tons Of Steel.

Before there was Americana, before there was Texas Country, Two Tons of Steel front man Kevin Geil and his original band, “Dead Crickets,” rocked a sound that blended the best of musical worlds and pushed the envelope of “Texas” sound with a signature brand of country meets punk.

The San Antonio-based group packed the small bars and local hangouts and quickly became the Alamo City’s most-loved band, earning them a spot on the cover of Billboard Magazine in 1996. It was the beginning of a twenty-year journey for Geil and the 4-piece ensemble.

Releasing “Two Tons Of Steel” in 1994 and “Crazy For My Baby” in 1995 on Blue Fire Records, a sponsorship deal with Lone Star Beer quickly followed. Dead Crickets, renamed Two Tons of Steel in 1996 began traveling outside of Texas, including stops at the Grand Ole’ Opry in Nashville, Tenn., the National Theater in Havana, Cuba, and European tours, to greet fans who had embraced their Texas-born sound. In 1996 they released “Oh No!” on their independent label, “Big Bellied Records.” They followed up the passion project with a live recording at the legendary Gruene Hall in Gruene, Texas, taped during a Two Ton Tuesday Show 1998.

2018 marked the band’s 23rd year of “Two Ton Tuesday Live from Gruene Hall.” The summerlong event has drawn over 230,000 fans since it began its annual run in 1995. The popular concert series was captured in “Two Ton Tuesday Live,” a DVD-CD combo released on Palo Duro Records in 2006. Also that year, the band’s first national release, “Vegas,” produced

by Grammy Award-winning producer Lloyd Maines on the Palo Duro label, took them to No. 7 on the Americana Music Charts and was one of the top 20 releases of 2006.

Two Tons released “Not That Lucky” in 2009. The album peaked at No. 4 on the Americana Music Charts and has made Two Tons of Steel a band to watch in 2013. Along the way, the band has collected a number of awards. To date, Two Tons has cleaned up at home, winning “Band of the Year” on 12 separate occasions and “Album of the Year” for its self-titled debut. Two Tons has also been named “Best Country Band” by the San Antonio Current ten times. Geil also has nabbed “Best Male Vocal” honors four times.

Two Tons of Steel’s reach extends beyond their live gigs. In 2003, the band was filmed during a “Two Ton Tuesday” gig for the IMAX film, “Texas: The Big Picture,” which can be seen daily at the IMAX Theatre in the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin and has been seen as far away as Japan. The band also has been featured as supporting characters in award-winning author Karen Kendall’s romance novel, “First Date.”
