To Do

5 Reasons to Visit Galveston Island:

Schlitterbahn’s New 8-Story Water Slide, Babe’s Beach Expansion Among Reasons to Enjoy Galveston This Summer

You don’t need a real reason to head to the coast during the Texas summer – the cool breezes and sparkling Gulf waters are usually enticement enough. But, in case you’re looking for a little extra motivation, here’s five new excuses to head to Galveston Island this summer.

#1 New ‘Infinity Racers” Ride at Schlitterbahn Waterpark

Schlitterbahn Galveston has to opened a new multi-million set of “Infinity Racers” slides. The ride will be the only 8-story, head-first mat slide in the world, giving thrill seekers the unique chance to experience a water-sliding rush that is as long as two space stations. In fact, the ride’s space-theme

– a tribute to the men and women of NASA and the Johnson Space Center located just 30 miles north – includes fun features like multi-colored fiberglass that creates special lighting effects inside each slide. For info, visit schlitterbahn.com/galveston.

#2 Turtles About Town

If you love turtles, you’ll have the chance to see plenty of them in Galveston this summer – and on land at that! The island’s new public art tour, Turtles About Town, showcases 20 different turtle monuments painted by local and national artists. You can spot these gigantic turtles at various locations throughout the island’s downtown, neighborhoods, and beachfront. The project was created as a partnership with Galveston’s Clay Cup Studios and the Turtle Island Restoration Network to raise awareness about the endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles that call the Gulf and its shores home. For more information about the art tour visit galvestonislandguide.com/turtle-tours/.

#3 Bigger Beaches

Galveston’s beaches are getting bigger, which means you’ll have more areas to play in the sand and soak up the sun. Babe’s Beach, located along the seawall from 61st to 83rd streets, is set to go through a multi-million dollar makeover. The beach nourishment project will be completed this summer and is a joint project of the Galveston Park Board, City of Galveston, Texas General Land Office, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In addition, there are plenty of beach events you don’t want to miss at Galveston’s other beach parks, including FREE concerts, sandcastle building lessons, and family challenges at Stewart Beach throughout the summer. Visit galvestonbeachinfo.com for details.

#4 New Ways to Explore Nature

Galveston is known as a nature and bird-lovers paradise, and this summer you can experience new ways to explore the island’s 32 miles of coastline. Start at The East End Lagoon Nature Preserve, which recently opened a new

Houston Children’s Chorus Is Now Registering Galveston Kids For 2019 Summer Music Funshop Houston’s premiere auditioned chorus for children will hold its 26th annual “Summer Music Funshop” in Galveston this coming July 22nd-28th. This is an annual service project for the Houston Children’s Chorus. Houston kids pay their way to spend one week in Galveston working side-by-side with Galveston children in a 5-day summer day camp. The daily workshops take place at Garten Verein in Kempner Park. The workshop culminates in a summer pops concert performed by all of the children at The Grand 1894 Opera House. The fee for Galveston children is $25. This

covers lunch each day, a performance t-shirt, and two tickets to the final concert. The theme for this year’s workshop is “A Rootin’ Tootin’ Boot Scootin’ Salute To Texas!” Fun choreography, beautiful children’s voices, and a pit band have made this annual concert a unique summer pops concert on the Island. Children who have completed grades 3 through 8 are eligible to attend. Advance registration is required. Visit the Chorus’ website at houstonchildren.org for registration information. You may also email the Chorus at info@houstonchildren.org or call (713)650-3800. Also joining the Houston & Galveston children will be 30 children from Taiwan. The Houston Children’s Chorus will be featured in concert during the week at Sacred Heart Church, St. Patrick’s Church, Moody Church, The Meridian, and Gulf Breeze. The Houston Children’s Chorus is celebrating its 30th year. Over 6,000 children have participated in Chorus programs since 1989. These talented children perform over 45 concerts per year.

nature trail, complete with interpretive signage. The trail, which is ADA-compliant, allows visitors to better explore the lagoon’s 684 acres of the coastal prairie – a prime location to kayak or spot some of the 200-plus species of birds that travel through or reside on the island throughout the year. Next, head to the Galveston Island State Park, which is offering new beach and bay exploration hikes and turtle patrols led by a state park naturalist on select dates throughout the summer.

#5 New Cruise Ships, Itineraries

Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean are bringing new cruise options to Galveston this summer. The Carnival Dream will launch fourand five-day cruises to Mexico year-round from Galveston, becoming the newest and largest Carnival ship to operate a short cruise program from Galveston. The recently renovated, 3,646-passenger Carnival Dream’s four-day long weekend cruises will depart Thursdays and visit Cozumel while five-day itineraries will depart Mondays and Saturdays calling at Cozumel and Progresso or Cozumel and Costa Maya. Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas will offer four and five-night Western Caribbean cruises seasonally, including Cozumel, Costa Maya, and the Yucatan as ports of call. Many of Galveston’s hotels and vacation rentals offer special packages and incentives for cruise passengers, including free parking and shuttles to the port. For more information, visit galveston.com/parkandcruise. For more information on visiting Galveston Island this summer, visit galvestonislandguide. com.

Longer Days to Ride The Galveston Trolleys Getting around on the island is easier than ever these days, and what better way to do so than to ride one of Galveston Rubber Wheel Trolleys! Hours of operation for the Galveston Rubber Wheel Trolleys (“Galveston Trolleys”) are 10am-10pm daily. The fee to ride is $1 for adults, and minors who are accompanied by adults can ride for free. Riders will need to bring exact change to place in the fare box; drivers do not have the ability to make change. The trolleys pass each stop on the trolley route every 30 minutes. You can jump on or jump off anywhere along the routes. "Robby Bennett is a young performer breathing new vitality into an old art form and engaging audiences with a renewed sense of wonder. The young Texan is pushing the boundaries of peoples’ expectations of a stage magic show and is someone worth seeing live. “His approach helps to restore a sense of mystery to the proceedings, since modern audiences demand more than they might have in the past.” (Houston Free Press) On July 27th at 7pm, at The Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston, Robby will perform his spellbinding routines with gripping stories and hilarious anecdotes as narration. The impossible will vanish before your eyes, and logic be forgotten as you sit in awe. Robby will even take someone from the audience and turn them into a genuine magician in a matter of minutes. “The Glovemaker” by Ann Weisgarber Galveston Bookshop is located Downtown Galveston at 317 23rd Street, Galveston. For more info call (409)750-8200 or go to galvestonbookshop.com.

Saturday, July 13th (35pm): “The Glovemaker” by Ann Weisgarber

Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for local author Ann Weisgarber and her latest novel, “The Glovemaker.” This is free to attend. In the wilds of the Utah Territory, in 1888, thirty-seven-year-old Deborah Tyler waits for her husband, Samuel, to return home from his travels as a wheelwright. It is now the depths of winter, Samuel is weeks overdue, and Deborah is getting worried. Deborah lives in Junction, a tiny town of seven Mormon families scattered along the floor of a canyon, and she earns her living by tending orchards and making work gloves. Isolated by the red-rock cliffs that surround the town, she and her neighbors live apart from the outside world, even regarded with suspicion by the Mormon faithful who question the depth of their belief. When a desperate stranger who is pursued by a Federal Marshal shows up on her doorstep, it sets in motion a chain of events that will turn her life upside down. When the Marshal is critically injured, Deborah and her husband’s best friend, Nels Anderson, are faced with life and death decisions that call into question their faith, humanity, and both of their futures. Ann is also the author of “The Promise,” set in Galveston prior to the 1900 storm, and “The Personal History of Rachel DuPree.” She was nominated for the UK’s Orange Prize, the Orange Award for New Writers, and the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction. In the United States, she won the Stephen Turner Award for New Fiction and the Langum Prize for American Historical Fiction. She was shortlisted for the Ohioana Book Award and was a Barnes and Noble Discover New Writer. Ann was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters. She lives in Galveston.

Red Light District Tours with Kimber Fountain, Author of “Galveston’s Red Light District: A History of The Line”

From the author of the book comes a wonderful tour and a riveting journey through the forgotten parts of Downtown Galveston that were once bustling with wild parties and generous offerings of hourly love. Join renowned author and speaker Kimber Fountain as she brings to life the tales - both tragic and triumphant - of Galveston’s historic Red Light District. Known today as a colorful resort destination featuring family-friendly entertainment and a thriving arts district, Galveston was once notorious for its flourishing vice economy of illegal liquor and gambling and an infamous red light district called simply, “The Line.” This unassuming five blocks of Postoffice Street came to life every night and remained a stubborn mainstay of the island cityscape for nearly seventy years. Galveston was more than just a city of gangsters and lewd women, and Kimber Fountain pursues the authentic, sequestered story of women who wanted to make their own rules and the city that wanted to let them. Tours are every Wednesday-Saturday starting at 7pm. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased online at redlightdistricttoursofgalveston. com in advance or at the start of the tour (cash only). Tour meets on the north steps of the old Post Office at 601 25th St. Tours are at 7pm. Signed copies of Kimber’s books “Galveston’s Red Light District: A History of The Line” ($23.99) and “Galveston Seawall Chronicles” ($21.99) will be available for purchase (cash or credit) at the conclusion of the tour. For more info go to redlightdistricttoursofgalveston.com, email GalvestonRedLightTours@ gmail.com, or call or text (409)526-6883.

A Show For The Whole Family, Including Your Cat with “Cat Butt Parfait”

Have you ever cleaned up one of your cat’s hairballs and thought, “Oh yeah, art?” A new exhibition is at Galveston Arts Center with a very curious title: “Cat Butt Parfait: Chuck & George Explore the Ecosystem of Domestic Feline Digestion.” Chuck & George is the ongoing collaborative project of Brian Keith Jones and Brian Keith Scott. This fantasia is inspired by the parasites that populate the feline digestive system, but fear not: they promise that this is an exhibition filled with humor. Chuck & George use multiple media, including paintings, drawings, ceramics, and papier-mâché. “Cat Butt Parfait” runs through August 18th. This exhibit is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. There will be an Opening Reception Saturday, July 13th, 6-9pm with an artist talk at 6:30pm. “Exchange Rate” features artists who incorporate currency in their work as material and subject matter. Playing on the location of GAC’s home in the 1878 First National Bank Building and The Strand’s history as the “Wall Street of the South,” the artists in the exhibition address commercial systems of trade, value, and labor represented in paper, metal, plastic, and digital media. Addressing personal relationships to currency and the exchange of goods, services, and the accumulation of wealth, worth, and value, this exhibition aims to give insights into the work of artists connected to the region who each take individual approaches to address this medium of exchange in their work. In the 1878 & Brown Foundation Galleries, there will be work featuring work by Corey Ackelmire, Mike Beradino, Rene Cruz, Kevin Curry, Kathy Hall, Mary Jeys, Virginia Lee Montgomery, Ken Little, Deborah Mersky, Phillip Pyle II, Dan Tague, The Art Guys, and Anthony Thompson Shumate. Music Galveston Beach Band Performs Weekly Free Concerts This Summer The Galveston Beach Band, founded by Frank Incaprera’s father, has been providing concerts for over 90 years. Frank, the band leader, has been attending concerts since he was four months old! And some members of the band have been part of the band for 40+ years. FREE concert times are every Tuesday evening, 7.30-9.30pm. The concert location is at Sealy Pavilion off Broadway and in front of the Rosenberg Library in downtown Galveston. The Galveston Beach Band concerts play a wide variety of music drawing from Jazz, show tunes, and music of its time. Starting in the 1920’s, the Galveston Beach Band free concerts were an important summer Island attraction, often boasting audiences of 2,000 and featured on the newspaper’s front page. By the 1960s the Band had declined but was then revitalized, thanks to its core of loyal musicians and then new leader, Frank Incaprera. Fast forward to today and the free concerts continue, as much loved as ever.

Concerts & More Music Events

Now a proudly family venue, the concerts are a diverse mix of much-loved show tunes, big band numbers, and jazz. Frank Incaprera is the driving force behind the Galveston Beach Band. From annual quests for funding to music selection, conducting, and playing solos, Frank is front and center stage. He is a man of monumental commitment and under his nearly 50-year leadership, the summer concerts continue to bring pleasure to so many. In 2014 Frank celebrated his 90th birthday. Sponsored by Galveston Island, the Beach Band continues a tradition of family music by performing concerts each summer that provides free, good, clean, family-fun from June to August.
