At Moody Gardens This Month:

Ghostly Gardens, Scary Movies In October Moody Gardens is located at 1 Hope Blvd. in Galveston. For more info or tickets go to moodygardens.com.

Ghostly Gardens will be held October 12th, 19th and 26th at Moody Gardens and will embrace the Halloween spirit with lots of spooky fun. Get the fright night combo ticket for $19.95 per person which includes one movie at the Fright Night Film Fest, one showing of “Happy Family 4D” in the 4D Special FX Theater, admission into the Reef Rescue VR Experience, and admission into the Rainforest of Terror. Individual tickets for specific events are also available.

Fright Night Film Fest is guaranteed to get horror fans in the fright frame of mind on the largest screen in Texas and some tamer options for the youngsters as well.

Each night features three horror-movie titles that get progressively scarier as the evening goes on, from chilling to fearful to downright frightening.

Concessions will be available along with special Halloween themed drinks for the ghoulish occasion.

For the rated R movies those under 18, will not be admitted without accompanying parent or adult guardian. Individual movie tickets are $9.95. The Ghostly Gardens Film Fest is:

Explore the plights the animals there face from poaching to deforestation. Individual event tickets are $25.95.

Spooktacular Halloween October 26th will be held 2-4pm. Come to this free event that includes trick-or-treating at various locations throughout the property, crafts, and more. There’s even a costume contest for guests in the Garden Lobby with prizes for the best costume. Registration for the costume contest is from 2-2:45pm. Contestants will be

separated by age group.

Holiday in the Gardens

Starting November 16th-January 12th, Holiday in the Gardens will take place. As the largest holiday destination in the Southwest, Moody Gardens offers more holiday attractions, activities, festive fun, dining and hotel packages than you can imagine.

The eight Holiday Attractions at Moody Gardens are Ice Land: Christmas Around the World, Festival of Lights, Cirque Joyeux, Holiday 3D Films, Rudolph 4D, Ice Skating, Arctic Slide, Train Rides, and Photos with Santa plus live entertainment, great food, group rates, hotel packages, and more!

There will also be ice skating, an arctic slide, photos with Santa, train rides, and more.

Tickets are available in all kinds of combo packages as well as individual packages. Moody Gardens has Super Value Days for Bigger Discounts at Holiday in the Gardens! Admission starts at just $8.95 for Festival of Lights and $19.95 for IceLand with an additional $5 off for seniors and children at IceLand on special days. New Year’s Palooza at Moody Gardens Hotel

December 31st, this annual event sells out fast! An action packed adventure awaits the whole family at Moody Gardens New Year’s Palooza. Daily (12 noon, 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm): Colonel Paddlewheel Boat Cruise - Live the high-life on an hour-long cruise aboard a replica of an 1800s paddlewheel boat. Cruises are Monday-Friday at 2pm, Saturday-Sunday at 2pm and 4pm.

Every Second Saturday (7pm): Dinner Cruises Aboard Colonel Paddlewheel Boat - Enjoy beautiful views of Offatts Bayou, plus a dinner buffet, dancing and a cash bar every second Saturday.

Saturday-Sunday (1:30pm): Giant River Otter Encounter - Join an otter biologist as they take you behind the scenes of the otter exhibit for the rare opportunity to meet the Giant Amazon River Otters. Learn about otter biology, conservation, and how these amazing animals are cared for in their private interior exhibit area. After this 45 minute encounter behind the scenes, you can then join the biologist on the training platform during the 2:30pm “You Otter Know” public presentation. Saturday-Sunday (1pm): Penguin Encounter Have you ever wanted to meet a Penguin up-close?

Led by a Moody Gardens biologist, the experience starts at the front of the exhibit and takes guests behind the scenes to the food preparation kitchen; and to the back of the chilly penguin exhibit while discussing penguin biology, conservation, training, enrichment and care. Participants will experience the cool climate, sounds, and even the smells of the exhibit, and witness a Moody Gardens Penguin create a work of art as part of an enrichment activity for the animal. Tickets are $75 per person, and the encounters will take place only on Saturdays and Sundays up to the Thanksgiving weekend. Participants must also purchase admission to the Aquarium Pyramid. How Galveston’s Historic Hotels Celebrate Halloween and the Holidays Ghosts, costumes, Christmas carols, holiday brunches, and gingerbread houses are all on the calendar at Galveston’s historic hotels, Hotel Galvez & Spa® and The Tremont House, both Wyndham Grand® Hotels.

Ghost Tours and Costumes

This October, Hotel Galvez is changing its monthly ghost tour dinners to weekly on TuesdaysFridays. On Fridays, the ghost tour dinner is only available as part of an overnight package. The weekday ghost tour dinner is $65 per person and includes a 1 ½ hour guided ghost tour followed by a three-course meal in the restaurant. Tours begin at 6pm. At The Tremont House, guests are invited to wear their favorite Halloween costume. Costumes and Cocktails is free to attend and are scheduled on Friday-Saturday, October 25th-26th, 6-10pm.

Gingerbread Displays

Then in November, Galveston Island gets into holiday mode. In honor of The Polar Express™ Train Ride at the Galveston Railroad Museum, The Tremont House is creating a special “Polar Express” themed gingerbread house. The gingerbread house will be on public display in the lobby of the hotel beginning November 15th-January 2nd.

Hotel Galvez & Spa will unveil its special “The Night Before Christmas” themed gingerbread village on Thursday, November 28th. This famous poem will be recreated in gingerbread for guests to enjoy.

Holiday Tree Lighting

Thanksgiving weekend Hotel Galvez invites guests and the community to celebrate the start of the holidays with the Official City of Galveston Holiday Lighting Celebration on Friday, November 29th. Festivities begin at 6pm and include a special appearance by Santa Claus, live holiday entertainment by local entertainers including the Galveston Ballet, and the lighting of the hotel’s 35-foot Christmas Tree on the front lawn.

Christmas Carols

Back by popular demand, The Tremont House’s Duo du Jour will lead guests in a holiday sing-along on December 12th and 19th, 7-9pm, featuring everyone’s favorite Christmas songs. The hotel encourages guests to wear your pajamas in honor of The Polar Express™ Train Ride at the Galveston Railroad Museum.

Holiday Brunch and Santa

Brunch at Hotel Galvez is a family tradition for many guests. The hotel will begin taking Thanksgiving Brunch reservations on Monday, November 4th and Christmas Day Brunch reservations on Monday, December 2nd. Advance reservations are required and are available by calling (409)515-2028.

Additionally, the hotel hosts Sunday Brunch with Santa every Sunday in December before Christmas.

Saturday, October 12th (8pm) Writer Samuel Gallu has penned a faithful and often humorous portrayal of President Harry S. Truman’s life and presidency. It spans his childhood, his “political apprenticeship” as a judge in Jackson County, MO, his years in the US Senate, and his momentous two terms as President. Clifton Truman Daniel took up the mantle as President Truman in October of 2017, marking the first time in history a U.S. president would be portrayed onstage by a direct descendant. Silent Film with Rob Landes: “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”

Sir James Galway and Lady Galway: “80th Birthday Celebration Tour”

Saturday, October 26th (8pm) Legendary flautist Sir James Galway is bringing his “80th Birthday Celebration Tour” to The Grand as part of The Grand’s 125th Anniversary! A supreme performer, called “The Man with the Golden Flute,” Sir James will share the stage for selected pieces with flautist Lady Jeanne Galway. A man whose appeal transcends all musical boundaries, Sir James was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame in 2008 alongside fellow inductees Liza Minnelli and B.B. King, and is possibly the only classical instrumentalist to bear the distinction.

Haunted History For October Bishop’s Palace Tours

The Bishop’s Palace (a.k.a. Gresham House) is a contributing building in the East End District and a National Historic Landmark.

For an island that is no stranger to the strange, this Halloween season Galveston Historical Foundation is offering a breathtaking roster of uniquely created events for adult and youth alike. “The island is a treasure of haunted stories and spooky places,” states GHF Executive Director, Dwayne Jones. “Our rich history and fascinating buildings are ideal for a truly unique Halloween experience.” Events are: October 24th, 25th, 26th and 31st (7pm and 8:15pm): Ghost Tours at the 1859 Ashton Villa - The public is offered a rare set of tours through this 1859 building. Join your guide for an unprecedented tour of the home as you hear about the early days of Galveston’s formation and exceptional life, and possible after-life, of the home’s Miss Bettie Brown. Tickets are $30.

October 12th, 19th, 26th (5:30pm): Haunted Sunset Cruises on Seagull II - Enjoy fall’s outstanding weather and sunsets with this evening tour. Departing from the Texas Seaport Museum, guests will enjoy a narrated exploration of Galveston’s historic bay its haunted history. These sunset cruises are BYOB. Tickets are $20.

October 24th, 25th, 26th (7pm and 7:30pm): Lanternlight Tours of the 1892 Bishop’s Palace - With lantern in hand, explore the nooks and crannies of Galveston’s beloved Bishop’s Palace. Learn about the history of the Gresham family and the house itself with a rare guided tour of the 1892 masterpiece. Tickets are $30.

October 31st (5-7pm): 1838 Menard House Trick or Treating Galveston’s oldest residence opens its gates for one night of ghostly fun. Bring your kids by for treats. Free for all, and be sure to bring your ghost hunting equipment! This is free to attend.

Other Events

October 19th (varies): Genteel Junque - An array of antiques, furniture, and home accessories will be available for sale at Galveston Historical Foundation’s annual sale of donated items. The sale will emphasize high-quality antiques, furniture, and art in good condition. Admission is free 8am-4pm. Proceeds from the sales of items benefit Galveston Historical Foundation.

October 26th (6-8pm): ELISSA’s 142nd Birthday Party With Saint Arnold Brewing Company - She’s looking fantastic for 142! Help celebrate the October birthday of The Official Tall Ship of Texas, the 1877 ELISSA, at this special History on Tap tasting. Your $20 ticket gets you admission to the Texas Seaport Museum, onboard the ship, and complimentary craft beer courtesy of Saint Arnold Brewing Company. You’ll need that beer for a special toast to the ship which you won’t want to miss. There will be a special ELISSA birthday cake and free admission to anyone named Elissa. Simply show up at the gate with your ID and you’re in to share in the celebration!

22nd Annual Artoberfest To Bring Historic Galveston To Life In Vivid Color October 19th-20th The 22nd Annual ARToberFEST Galveston - the island’s premier juried fine arts Festival will again transform the city’s historic downtown cultural arts district into an open-air gallery bursting with color and culture.

Set for the weekend of October 19th-20th, this spectacular Festival will take place on Postoffice Street between 20th and 23rd streets, between the hours of 10am-6pm, Saturday, October 19th; and 11am-5pm, Sunday, October 20th.

Sponsored by The Grand 1894 Opera House, this year’s event will honor the life of Jeff Hamachek – a long-time participant in ARToberFEST. “Recognized as a professionally-trained fine artist with a contemporary impressionistic style influenced by masters Monet and Van Gogh, Jeff Hamachek left us much too soon. We are very grateful to his wife Jerri, who has agreed to participate in this year’s Festival to showcase some of his fine work,” noted Festival Coordinator, Sarah Piel. Hamachek was well-respected not only by his peers locally but nationwide as well.

This year’s event will feature 14 different forms of artistic media to be showcased by over 100 exceptional artists participating from throughout the United States, as well as artists from the Houston/Galveston Gulf Coast area. In addition to viewing and having the opportunity to purchase an exceptional selection of fine art, festival-goers can look forward to great live entertainment and an expanded, lively, and fun Children’s Creative Zone. Again this year, the always-popular Galveston’s Farmer’s Market and specialty food vendors will be returning, with a new vendor – Black’s Fairy Meadery – offering a special honey wine from nearby West Columbia.

Another very special vendor this year – in conjunction with The Grand’s 125th Anniversary celebration – is the renowned Heritage Auction House from Dallas, long recognized as an auctioneer of numismatic collections, fine art, luxury accessories, and memorabilia from film, music, history, and sports. Festival-goers who would like to have personal items appraised may bring their items to the Heritage Auction House booth for an on-site appraisal. Plus, entertainment for this year’s ARToberFEST will also be very special - featuring hardpan artist Andrew Baker

The Galveston Trolleys Fall Hours Begin Getting around on the island is easier than ever these days with the Galveston Rubber Wheel Trolleys! Hours of operation for the “Galveston Trolleys” for the fall and winter season are Monday-Thursday 11am-7pm, Friday-Sunday 10am-10pm.

The fee to ride is $1 for adults, and minors who are accompanied by adults can ride for free.

Again this year, youngsters are sure to have a fun time, too! The Children’s Creative Zone, an interactive art activities area, will be set up near The Grand 1894 Opera House on the 21st and Postoffice Street block. Your children and grandchildren can look forward to creating their own masterpieces to take home, with activities led by high school students.

In addition, there will be a special Young Collector’s Gallery. Open to children only, the Young Collector’s Gallery will showcase works by kids – for kids! The artwork will be priced at $5 per piece –to encourage youngsters to begin their own art collection. This special gallery will be open from 12 noon-3pm both Saturday and Sunday. It’s important to note that all the art for the Young Collector’s Gallery was created and donated by the LaMarque High School Art Department, with proceeds from gallery sales dedicated for the support of the Daisy’s Friends Fund at The Grand 1894 Opera House.

(This project provides funding for disadvantaged students to be able to attend a Serious Fun Children’s Series Performance at The Grand.)

The trolleys pass each stop on the trolley route every 30 minutes. Stops will take you from Stewart Beach along the Seawall to Moody Gardens as well as down 25th Street to numerous stops throughout historic Downtown.

This is your chance to visit with members of The Lone Star Living History Crew on their deployment to the Bryan Museum for a day of military history. Examine tools of the trade such as ammo and ordinance, officer gear, sailor standard issue, and USN manuals. As a special treat, learn how the Waves (Naval Women’s Reserve) supported the war effort!

October 12th (1-4pm): Gallery Presentation: Barbwire Poetry - Hearken back to the days of the open range and cattle drives as the Poet Laureate of Pasadena, Smokey Culver, shares the music and poetry that captures the humor, the sadness, and the spirit of the American cowboy. Many songs were long poems set to music and were sung to soothe the restive cattle at night. Smokey will share both traditional and original works along with his love of the cowboy lifestyle and traditions.

October 19th (1-4pm): Gallery Presentation: A Woman’s Work is Never Done - Cotton! The origins of this simple plant fiber grown worldwide

remain hazy, but the earliest specimens are 7,000 years old and are remarkably similar to what is grown today. Historical program coordinator Katrina Yordy of Jesse Jones Park and Nature Center will demonstrate the process of changing raw cotton into the fabric that we love. Try your hand at ginning, carding, spinning, and weaving.

Learn about Eli Whitney’s little machine that revolutionized an industry, boll worms, natural dyes, and why it’s illegal to grow cotton in your garden without a permit.

October 19th (4-6pm): Lecture Series: Sam Houston: Giant of the Frontier - Sam Houston (1793-1863) is remembered today primarily for his activities in Texas, but in fact, he was also a giant of the frontier and a dominant American political figure in the 1800s. No one who learns Sam Houston’s story will ever see American history the same way again. Join Denton Florian, historian and executive producer of the celebrated documentary, Sam Houston, as he presents an overview of Houston’s personality, life, leadership, and importance to Texas!

October 20th (2-4pm): High Adventure Book Club - Noah Smithwick drifted to Texas in 1827 and remained here for the next thirty-four years of his life. His memoir of that time is a fascinating account of the early history of the Lone Star State when life was extremely tough for the early pioneers. From the Fall of the Alamo to the Battle of Brushy Creek, Smithwick chronicles some of the most iconic moments in early Texan history.

October 20th (1-4pm): Lecture Series: Trials and Tribulations of Frontier Life - Early Texas settlers had to contend with a rough environment, predatory animals, lack of medical care, drought, mud, horse and cattle thieves, and the uncertainties of the political situation with Mexico.

And yet, people flocked to Tejas to claim their league and labor of land under the Empresario program administered by Stephen F. Austin. Stop by and visit with historical interpreter Dennis Jones for a lesson in frontier survival.

October 30th (3-4:30pm): Exclusive Garden Tour - Stroll the Museum’s gorgeous gardens with its official Horticulturist, Mitzy Barringer. Mitzy will guide you through the garden’s Autumn plantings, touching on both the indigenous and exotic flora.

November 9th (6-9pm): Remembering the Shamrock: An Evening at the Bryan’s Annual Gala - On Saturday, November 9th, The Bryan Museum will celebrate its Fourth Annual Gala, Remembering the Shamrock. You will be transported back to the glamour and elegance of that time on what is sure to be another magical evening, while paying tribute to this remarkable Texas landmark, gone, but not forgotten. Mr. Philip F. Anschutz will be awarded the Museum’s Buck n’ Ball award at the Gala. Mr. Anschutz has been recognized by Forbes Magazine as “one of the world’s 100 greatest living business minds” as well as a Fortune 500 businessman and philanthropist.

The 2019 Lone Star Rally Rumbles into Town The Progressive Lone Star Rally returns to Galveston Island ThursdaySunday, October 31st-November 3rd! Thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts from across the nation will roll into town for four days of non-stop music, shopping, and eating, multiple bike and car shows, and so much more... all, for free!

Locals and visitors alike will be treated to views of the coolest paint jobs and most decked out custom rides on two, three, and four wheels.

Car shows, including a special Slingshots round up, begins on Thursday and continues throughout the event on Pier 21.

On Friday, some of the most hilarious ridingaction can be seen at the Bike Rodeo Games taking place at Beach Central Park, where riders will compete in all types of rodeo-style games to win the coveted ‘Games Champion Belt.’

On Saturday, the Ride-In Custom Bike Show, also at Beach Central, will showcase the passion of amateur bike builders who’ve poured their hearts and souls into customizing their rides.

Downtown, motorcycle enthusiasts will thrill to the steady parade of custom paint and tricked out builds along the Strand all weekend long.

And also, at the 3rd Annual In-Motion builders invitational will be staged at Hendley Green Park at 21st and Strand, where 10 of the nation’s hottest builders will compete to win a $10,000 purse.

Saengerfest Park, located in Downtown Galveston, is a great place to find free familyfriendly fun as the days (slowly) begin to cool off.

Saengerfest Park is a small, square park located on the corner of 23rd St. and The Strand in Galveston’s Historic Strand District. Saengerfest Park is known for having a large, playable chess set, a large compass that can be used as a seat, a colorful iconic Galveston wall mural, a huge beach chair offering photo opportunities, wooden benches, an old-fashioned London-style phone booth, and a stage used for festivals, movies, and concerts.

Visitors and residents are invited to enjoy free movies the first Saturday of each month May-October beginning just after dusk. Moviegoers are encouraged to set up a blanket or chair.

Galveston Graveyard Tour

Take a historic walking tour of Galveston’s oldest cemeteries. Learn about the history of the cemeteries, burial practices, and the stories of those buried there. See the graves of Galveston’s most famous citizens including Menard, Williams, Childress, Miss Bettie, and more! Their stories include murder, suicide, and city hauntings. The Edward and Helen Bird Observatory, located at the corner of Stewart Road and Settegast on Galveston Island, is open and with fall migration in full swing, this is a wonderful place to view all kinds of birds. It is open from dawn until dusk, Tuesday through Saturday.

Saturday, October 5th (2-4pm): “Legacy of the Early Gulf Coast Cowboys” by Chris O’Shea Roper and Tom Linton

Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with returning authors Chris O’Shea Roper and Tom Linton and their look into the origins of the cowboy mythos, by way of the early cattlemen of the Texas Gulf Coast.

The story of the original cowboys of the Gulf Coast salt-grass prairies began long before Stephen F. Austin established a colony in the area and invited settlers to join him. It began with dispossessed farmers and nomadic cattle herders from as far away as Scotland, Nova Scotia, and Africa.

These cowboys and cattlemen lived a life far removed from the glamorous accounts that Hollywood would have us believe. Originally, their trail drives took them east to New Orleans during the Civil War years, and later north along trails with names like Chisholm. It has even been said that the mystique of the cowboy of the Wild Wild West owes its existence to these cowboys of the Wild Wild East.

Many of them - with names like Broussard, Butler, Campbell, Dick, and White - established farms and ranches that grew into family enterprises that make up the fabric of these coastal-prairie communities today. Some of the formerly enslaved also established homesteads in an area now preserved as The 1867 Settlement.

This book blends historical research into the origins of these men and women, with personal anecdotes and stories from their descendants to create a very readable tale.

Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with Ervin Mendlovitz and his two books focusing on Galveston’s 1900 storm, a novel and a collected oral history.

“GalveStorm 1900: A Story of Twin Flames” is set in Galveston, Texas. This is the story of Uri Petrokov, a Russian immigrant, and Genevieve Parker, a beautiful, independent-thinking young Texas woman who is far ahead of her time.

As successful as Uri has been, partnering with his brother Peter in the print business and thus living the American Dream, he remains unfulfilled nonetheless, until the day Genevieve walks into the shop.

The struggles the young couple must endure to be together, including prejudices in the community and within Genevieve’s own family, test the limits of their love. Meanwhile, another storm is brewing, quite literally. On a Saturday in 1900, Galveston is taken by complete surprise when a hurricane unexpectedly devastates the port city, nearly sweeping it from the face of the Earth. The resulting cataclysm changes the young couple’s lives forever.

“The Voices of the Descendants: Stories From the 1900 Galveston Storm” is a compilation of stories primarily told by the descendants of those who experienced the 1900 storm, many never before presented publicly. Black and white photos from private family collections are included.

Ervin Mendlovitz, O.D., lives in San Antonio where he has a private optometry practice. His own experiences as a minority in Texas helped inform the narrative in this story of immigration, love, and natural disaster.

At Galveston Arts Center This Month:

Gerardo Rosales “Undercover” Opening at Galveston Arts Center

Galveston Arts Center presents “Undercover,” a solo exhibition by Venezuelan-born and Houstonbased artist Gerardo Rosales opening Saturday, October 12th, 6-9pm, with artist talk beginning at 6:30pm. Rosales explores issues of class, race, gender, and immigration to expose social inequalities experienced by immigrants coming from Latin America to the United States. His paintings include rich colors and patterns that juxtapose the harshness of the wilderness of the tropics with domestic imagery. His works mix conflict with playfulness as a means to exaggerate reality with irony. The exhibition will be on view through January 5th, 2020.

Also on view through November 17th is Erin Curtis’ “Night and Day” in the main gallery on the first floor.

In GAC’s second-floor galleries, the exhibition “Exchange Rate” is on view through October 6th. The exhibition features artists who incorporate currency in their work as material and subject matter.

These exhibitions are supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

GAC is the organizer of ArtWalk, which takes place every six weeks in Downtown Galveston. The galleries are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-5pm, and Sunday 12 noon-5pm. Admission is free at all times.

An Abundance of Goodies at The Market

October 25th-27th in Historic Downtown Galveston:

Galveston Island’s 38th Annual Island Oktoberfest This year’s festival kicks off Friday evening, October 25th from 5-10pm, and continues Saturday, October 26th from 11am-10pm.

Galveston’s premier fall festival, the 38th Annual Island Oktoberfest, expands to include for the first time ever, a special Sunday morning German Polka Church service to be held outside under the big tent! The service will begin at 10am, and the 38th annual Island Oktoberfest will then conclude at 12 noon, following a Fellowship hour after the church service.

This fun, family weekend will feature continuous live entertainment on two stages, an expanded menu of authentic German food and libations, Cake Wheel, shopping for fine arts, crafts, and gifts in the historic 1860 Lyceum, a lively auction, more fun contests, beer and wine events, and fun, family children’s activities plus much more.

Island Oktoberfest will be held on the grounds of and streets adjacent to First Lutheran Church, 24th and Winnie, in historic Downtown Galveston.

Admission is free.

German costumes are encouraged. This year, festival-goers can look forward to more of everything … that is German!

Island Oktoberfest, hosted by First Evangelical Lutheran Church and co-sponsored by Del Papa Distributing Company, will open Friday evening with themed Bier Garten venues - featuring a variety of both German and domestic brews and a variety of German-style wines. Again this year, Oktoberfest will feature special beer and wine tasting events paired with a delightful array of appetizers.

In addition to great music and dancing, there will be superb food including smoked sausage, bratwurst, knockwurst, and “Wurstabendessen”a sausage dinner comprised of German-style and Polish-style Wurst with all the traditional German side dishes. This special German Dinner will be available both Friday evening and on Saturday.

For a sweet finale, homemade Helmut’s strudel (freshly baked on-site) will be offered, in addition to a variety of tempting homemade desserts - specially prepared by congregation members from recipes handed down from generation to generation, and additional popular festival treats!

The historic and beautifully renovated circa 1860 Lyceum will again be open Friday evening and from 11am on Saturday, with vendors showcasing exceptional hand-crafted arts, crafts, and gift items for those festival-goers eager to get a head start on holiday shopping. Because Oktoberfest continues to be one of the vendors’ most enjoyable and popular venues, regular attendees can look forward to shopping at their long-time favorite booths - each featuring holiday and other special gift items.

It’s Time to OPA!

Galveston Greek Festival The Island goes Greek for the 37th Annual Galveston Greek Festival, October 12th-13th, when the Greek Community hosts their annual party at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 1824 Ball (Corner of 19th & Ball), Downtown Galveston.

What sets this event apart is that the food is made on-site by parishioners, most of whom are professional chefs, or incredible cooks in their own right. Fresh ingredients are used in the centuries old recipes, much to the delight of all visitors.

The Greek plate consists of pastitsio, meatballs, dolmades, olives, salad, cheese, and bread for $16.

Other items sold ala carte include souvlaki, gyros, dolmades (meat and vegetarian), salad, olives and cheese, tyropita, and spanakopita. Prices range from $4 to $8. A meal is not complete without a pastry or two, and selections include baklava, kourambiedes, paximadia, koulourakia, and a few new pastries that will debut at the event.

All foods and pastries are available to go.

A featured beverage is FIX beer, the “Bud of Greece” for generations; as well as Mythos Beer, which has won numerous awards for its flavor and remains a favorite of the European market. Served ice cold, both are sure to win the favor of those attending the Greek Festival.

Greek wines have been paired to compliment the dishes being served.

Returning by popular demand is the King of Bouzouki, Alex Kalos, who will perform with his band throughout festival; and the Greek Dancers who will perform every two hours.

Church tours will be led by Father Stelios Sitaras. Imported merchandise and food products from Greece will be available for purchase at the community gift shop and at vendor booths. An inside-outside event, the festival is rain or shine.

There is no admission to attend the festival; however, a small donation is appreciated and proceeds benefit the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church. Food and drink tickets are sold in $2 increments.

Come for a visit and stay for awhile! The Greek Festival hours are Saturday 11am-8pm, and Sunday 12 noon-6pm.

What has been the biggest challenge to overcome being a musician?

Anitra: You have to develop a few layers of thick skin when you’re putting your heart and soul out for public consumption. You get a lot of rejection in this business. Rejection from music snobs, rejection from industry gatekeepers, and even rejection from your own family, unfortunately. It’s especially tough with art because it’s so intangible. I’ve come across people saying no to me simply because they couldn’t ‘feel’ my music. “I’m just not feeling her,” was the exact words, in fact.

Ultimately, I’ve had to overcome the idea of rejection.

Just not worrying about what critics have to say. I’ve had to learn to be okay with people’s opinions. I’ve had to learn to focus on my own goals and desired outcomes instead of what other people want. I’ve had to get comfortable with being uncomfortable for the sake of evolving into what I’m supposed to be.

How does the songwriting process happen for you, and what influences you as a songwriter?

Anitra: My original songs are about the human life experience, relationships, emotions, things we go through on a day-to-day basis. I write about loss and triumph. Music is incredibly healing. There are emotions that go unspoken in our space, and music gives those emotions a place to express and exist. Being a songwriter is about so much more than rhyming and putting words to music. Songwriting is a strategic expression of thoughts and feelings that resonate in harmony with our spirits. So my songwriting process consists of capturing the feeling behind the words and figuring out a way to describe that feeling through words and song. It can start with just me strumming along on my guitar, or something that has happened to me or someone I know, or I can wake up out of a dream with the chords and words already written for me. It all depends on what season I’m in.

Tell us about getting on HGTV’s “Tiny House Hunters.” It sounds totally cool.

Anitra: It truly was a wonderful experience! Rob and I set out on a quest to lower our living expenses and live a minimal lifestyle so we can focus on music. A big factor in that was reducing our housing costs. That sparked our interest in tiny homes. We connected with a producer for Tiny House Hunters at a convention, and before we knew it, we were auditioning for a TV show on a major network.

Filming was soon underway. The show followed us as we toured a handful of homes to purchase. It aired in May of 2017 on HGTV. Ultimately, we decided to build one ourselves. That experience was truly life changing. We had no construction experience at all.

It’s kind of radical what we did as I think back on it.

Ultimately, it taught us to believe in ourselves and to not be afraid to do unconventional things.

What is your favorite song to perform and why?

Anitra: “I’m Still Here” is an original song and it’s my most favorite to perform because the message is strong and inspiring, plus it’s upbeat. And I created a little ‘second line’ dance of my own that audience members can follow and dance along with. The song’s message is about conquering life triumphantly.

It’s about celebrating the fact that after all you’ve been through, you’re still here fighting on.

What advice would you offer people who are just starting out, either individually, or as a band? Everyone has a “first day.”

Anitra: My advice for people just starting out is to assess your personal goals. Determine what success means to you first. Then figure out a way you can realistically achieve that. Also, business and marketing is a big aspect of being a musician. Focus on learning how to effectively market and promote your brand and learn how to run a business. If you can do those two things you have a fair chance at making it.

What piece of music equipment can you simply not live without?

Anitra: My guitar for sure. I work out my own emotions by just humming and strumming on my guitar a lot. Being able to play my guitar means more to me than just being a performer. I’d be playing my guitar whether I am a professional musician or not.

And our five questions that we ask everyone - 10 years from now, what would you like to be doing?

Anitra: 10 years from now, I’d love to have a music venue of my own and take a more active role in celebrating music and art in my local community.

I’d also love to travel to foreign countries and do something impactful with my music on a global scale.

If you could open up for any band right now, who would it be?

Anitra: I would love to open for Jill Scott! I saw her at the Essence Festival in New Orleans and I was blown away by her stage presence and authority. She has an old-school vibe with a modern glow. I think my music could complement her well.

Any big announcements, big gigs, new music, etc?

Anitra: I’m working on releasing my next album, “Work in Progress.” It’s about accepting life as a process and using challenges and discouragement as a way to grow and evolve to your higher purpose.

I’m hoping to release that in the next few months.

I’ve been working on this album for years. It’s been a work in progress in itself.

Is there anything else you would like people to know about you?

Anitra: A big part of my newest project, “Work in Progress,” is committing to dig deeper to find your own inner strength. We’re discussing purpose, values, and individual meaning.
