PROTESTERS WILL NOT INTIMIDATE TZIPI 11 NOVEMBER 2021/07 KISLEV 5782
@TheJewishWeekly 211
BY DAVID SAFFER
Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely will not be intimidated by “aggressive and threatening” anti-Israel protesters and will continue to hold “open dialogue” with all sectors of British society. Israel’s envoy hit back strongly after appalling footage showed her outside the London School of Economics facing jeers, boos and shouts of “shame on you” from pro-Palestinian demonstrators before being spirited away by a diplomatic car on Tuesday night. Israel’s emissary had been speaking at an LSE student union debating society forum titled the ‘New Era in the Middle East’. Hotovely, holding two bunches of flowers, can be seen being hurriedly escorted by security guards to her car which sped away whilst a large police contingent can be seen stopping demonstrators approaching the vehicle.

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid spoke with Hotovely shortly after the incident and praised her fortitude.
“Tzipi is strong and will not let any group of violent and antisemitic thugs intimidate her, as will all the other Israeli ambassadors in the world,” he said. “The fight against the de-legitimisation of Israel and antisemitism is part of our struggle for the Israeli story, and our ambassadors are at the forefront of this.” Home Secretary Priti Patel said she was disgusted at the scenes after the event and has backed a police investigation into the evening’s proceedings. “Antisemitism has no place in our universities or our country,” Patel noted on Twitter. “The police have my full backing in investigating this appalling incident.” Education Secretary Nadhim Zahazi was similarly appalled. “This is deeply disturbing, I am so sorry,” Zahawi tweeted to

Marie COVID-19 vaccine appeal as deaths pass 950 BY DAVID SAFFER Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl has renewed her call for anyone eligible to have vaccinations or a booster to take up the opportunity. Ms van de Zyl’s appeal comes with a rise in the number of Jewish community COVID-19 deaths. The Jewish community has now experienced 951 Jewish funerals since the start of the coronavirus pandemic where the deceased contracted COVID-19. Last week there were nine Jewish funerals reported to the Board, an increase from four from the previous week. “With the onset of winter, we are starting to see a rise in the number of loved ones who have who have died with Covid-19, Ms van de Zyl said. “It is more vital than ever that anyone eligible for a jab takes it, and we follow all appropriate COVID-19 secure measures. The lives of our nearest and dearest rely on it.” The Board of Deputies works with burial boards, regional Jewish communities and the Jewish Small Communities Network for accurate figures of COVID-19 deaths. “We wish bereaved families a long life, and pray that the memory of their loved ones should be for a blessing,” noted the Board in a statement.
The Board liaises with seven of the largest denominational burial boards to collate an indicator of deaths where Covid-19 was a factor. Burial boards include The Adath Yisroel Burial Society, Federation of Synagogues Burial Society, Joint Jewish Burial Board, Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi Community together with the United Synagogue Burial Society. The Board receives reports about large and small Jewish communities across the United Kingdom. Data on how many funerals were carried out by burial societies and communities where COVID-19 appeared on the death certificate of the deceased is from hospitals and the wider community. When comparing figures, data separate to this indicator may not have similar parameters. Successive figures are not indicative of a trend as smaller communities are not reported weekly.

Middle East Minister, James Cleverly, noted the “aggressive and threatening” behaviour of protesters directed at Hotovely was “unacceptable”. The 90-minute forum took place with no disruption nor evacuation of the Israel envoy as had been reported in some quarters. Hotovely addressed some 200 students whilst a reported 150 anti-Israel demonstrators protested outside the venue. Israel’s emissary and the embassy diplomatically offered a reaction but Jewish leaders condemned the protests. “I’m thankful for all the support I have received from the British government, many friends and partners,” Hotovely tweeted. “I had an excellent event at LSE and I will not be intimidated. I will continue to share the Israeli story and hold open dialogue with all parts of British society.” The Israel embassy said the forum was “successful, open and fruitful discussion” took place, adding that Palestinian and Islamic societies across London universities organised the demonstration organised. “The violence we witnessed when the ambassador left the premises after the talk will not deter Israeli diplomats from engaging in meaningful dialogue with all parts of the British society,” they noted. CST was present at the LSE to ensure the safety of Jewish students who wanted to attend the event. “The ambassador spoke without significant disruption, completed her talk and left the event as scheduled. The students who attended all left safely. Contrary to some claims, the ambassador was not forced out of LSE, chased away or prevented from speaking,” Said a spokesman. building included extremist chanting and created an atmosphere of “unacceptable intimidation” but failed to disrupt or prevent the event going ahead. And they criticised social media posts in the aftermath of the forum and footage. “We condemn the violent threats made in some online posts regarding the event and the intimidation as the ambassador left the building,” a spokesman added. The Board of Deputies said in a statement, “Those who exceeded the bounds of peaceful protest must be disciplined be prosecuted where appropriate.” The Board credited Hotovely for “facing down intimidation” with students. “The bullies will not win,” they noted. London’s Metropolitan Police attended the protest but made no arrests. The LSE said intimidation or threats of violence are completely unacceptable. A spokesman added, “Free speech and freedom of expression underpins everything we do at LSE. Students, staff and visitors are strongly encouraged to discuss and debate the most pressing issues around the world, but this must be in a mutually respectful manner. Intimidation or threats of violence are completely unacceptable.” Hotovely has faced critics as she was part of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party serving as Settlements Minister. LSE for Palestine student group claimed attendees walked out in solidarity at the start of the debate. They said in a statement on Wednesday that the protest was a “tremendous demonstration of solidarity with Palestine”. They also claimed that Hotovely did not ‘flee’ the university and students maintained a peaceful protest throughout the evening. Kochavi updates Knesset on possible Iran conflict
NEWS 3
Central Synagogue runs four daily services BY ADAM MOSES
Aviv Kochavi
BY SIMCHA ABIR Israel is prepared for a conflict with Iran and threats from any proxy attacks. IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi updated the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee on the Iranian global threat this week. In a hard-hitting address Kochavi made it clear the IDF would respond “strongly” to any breach of sovereignty from Gaza, the north Iranian forces or Palestinian forces. He added that the IDF was “speeding up” operational plans to deal with Iran and a possible nuclear military threat. “Israel faces many security challenges on six different fronts,” Kochavi warned. “On all of them Israel is working on defence, including measures to thwart attacks as well as attack plans. Over the past year we have continued to fight our enemies with operations and covert activities around the Middle East.” Committee Chair MK Ram Ben Barak added, “Iran is trying to create (a) terror infrastructure in Syria, is ramping up its efforts to deliver strategic weapons to Hezbollah, trying to lay the infrastructure for terror attacks in Gaza and in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), it is trying to attack Jewish and Israeli targets abroad, working in the cyber arena and moving towards developing the nuclear capabilities that would give it a defensive umbrella that would allow it to ramp up its belligerence around in the region.” Defence Minister Benny Gantz also

voiced concern over the Iranian peril. “We are working broadly against a number of efforts to build up militarily and to upset the balance in this region,” he explained during a visit to a defence factory in Shlomi. “We will not allow Hezbollah or any other Iranian proxy to obtain weapons that would threaten Israel’s supremacy in the region, we are continually working to prevent war, we conduct operations, send messages, prevent military build-up. But if and when there is war on the horizon our home front will be ready and we will be ready to carry out operations that have never been seen before, operations we never had the capability to carry out. These will strike the heart of terror and its abilities.” Bicom noted that the recently passed NIS 609bn state budget includes NIS 58bn for defence, an increase of NIS 7bn. Kochavi said the budget would allow the IDF to deal with various threats and improve training for the regular army and reserve units. The IDF may purchase new aircrafts, UAVs and weapons to penetrate Iran’s underground nuclear sites. According to Syrian reports the IAF held seven attacks in recent weeks, striking a weapons factory and shipment at an airport. Israeli analysts have reportedly noted the attacks took place before the onset of winter. In related news, nuclear talks with Iran are set to resume in Vienna at the end of this month. Israel holds the view that Iran have held back to advance its nuclear threshold status.

Central Synagogue continues to serve its members and visitors to London’s West End. The oldest Ashkenazi Synagogue in central London is now holding four weekday prayers services to include Shacharit, a lunchtime Mincha and a late afternoon Mincha and Mariv. The ‘jewel in the crown’ of the United Synagogue, Central for 152 years has been an integral part of the history of Anglo-Jewry dating back to its beginnings in 1848 according to records. Today’s synagogue was rebuilt after the original building was destroyed in a bombing raid in May 1941 during World War Two. Through the decades outstanding figures have contributed to the welfare and prosperity of the Jewish and wider community. Amongst many milestones, Rev. Simon Hass led the synagogue’s first midnight Selichot Service in 1963, four years later the community showed solidarity with Israel during the Six Day War. Chief Rabbi Brodie, Rabbi Shine and Rev. Simon Hass officiated at a centenary service in 1970. Central Synagogue was twinned with the Jewish community of Belarus, building a
Jewish school in Pinsk in 2000. And Sir Elie Wiesel attended a Shabbat service the week of his knighthood in recognition of his literary achievements and services to humanity in 2006. Rabbi Barry Lerer and Rebbetzin Naomi Lerer were appointed at Central two years ago. Service details: www.centralsynagogue. org.uk

UEFA slam Union Berlin FC over Nazi salutes
BY ADAM MOSES
Campaign Against Antisemitism have backed UEFA’s tough stance against German side Union Berlin FC after horrific antisemitic abuse against Maccabi Haifa supporters at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium in a Europa Conference League clash in September. The footballing body has punished Berlin for “racist behaviour” by a group home supporters. Beer was thrown at the Maccabi fans, who were subjected to antisemitic insults and threats of violence. A Berlin supporter also allegedly tried to burn an Israeli flag. Two home sections for supporters were shut for a clash against Feyenoord when the Dutch side won 2-1 last week. Berlin also had to display a banner with the phrase “#NoToRacism” alongside the UEFA logo in the sections where trouble occurred. A CAA spokesman noted, “UEFA is right to sanction the club and force it to publicise that the penalty is due to racism but the club itself must also now act, by identifying the perpetrators and giving them life bans. Like those decent Union Berlin fans who tried to
stop the abuse, the club itself, and German clubs more generally, should be particularly sensitive to antisemitism among any of their supporters and step in to stamp it out.” The German-Israeli Society Youth Forum was at the Berlin vs Haifa match and felt unsafe during the clash (September 30th). A number of members have praised some Berlin fans for trying to stop the abuse but
the experience ruined what should have been a memorable night for the Israeli following at the European game. Images of fans performing Nazi salutes, which is illegal in Germany, appeared on Twitter. “In the mixed block we were threatened by Union fans, pelted with beer and insulted, among other things, as ***** Jews”, they noted on social media. “Eye witnesses were shocked by the levels
of antisemitism,” added a Twitter user. “This man-made Nazi salutes towards the Maccabi fans and abused those who called him out.” Berlin club president Dirk Zinglers labelled the behaviour as “shameful”. He said in the statement, “We apologise to those affected. Antisemitism is unfortunately still present in our society, which is why it also shows itself in the stadium. However, we will never tolerate discrimination in our ranks. It is important to remain vigilant and to work tirelessly against it.” Zingler said the club would back police investigations. Maccabi Haifa, who lost 3-0, have not commented on the incident but welcomed Berlin’s hospitality. The match was the first by an Israeli team in the stadium built for the 1936 Olympic Games during the Nazi era. Berlin normally play games at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei but it does not meet UEFA’s regulations so the clash was switched. Anti-Semitic incidents in Germany have increased in the past year with over 2,275 crimes in past year to January 2021 it has been reported.

Cambridge bans Hitler impersonator The University of Cambridge has banned a speaker who impersonated Adolf Hitler during a debate. Art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon, 60, performed the act during an argument against the motion entitled “This house believes there is no such thing as good taste”. Graham-Dixon has apologised and claimed he was trying to “underline the utterly evil nature of Hitler”. He added, “On reflection I can see that some of the words I used, even in quotation, are inherently offensive.” Graham-Dixon has been banned and Union President Keir Bradwell noted a “blacklist of speakers” would be created to be shared with other unions. Graham-Dixon would be on it. Bradwell issued an apology in the Cambridge Union for not speaking out at the time. “Neither I nor the society condones the thoughtless and grotesque language used by the individual in question, and I am sorry for my failure to intervene at the time. “The speaker in question employed a crass and deeply insensitive impression of Hitler to make the point in opposition that there is such a thing as bad taste. It was inexcusable, and I regret not intervening.” He added, “I was heartened to accept a floor speech immediately after the speaker had concluded which pointed out the deplorable nature of his remarks.”

West Ham fans blasted over antisemitic song BY DAVID SAFFER Jewish organisations have slated West Ham fans over the racist abuse of a Charedi passenger on a Ryanair flight to Belgium last week (November 4) Essex Police arrested two men, aged 55 and 26, on suspicion of a hate crime after chanting an antisemitic song at the orthodox passenger. Bennett claims “day of joy” as Knesset passes state budget BY DAVID SAFFER Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has hailed the Knesset passing a state budget after “years of chaos”. The 2021 budget scraped through 61-59 MKs voting in favour, 2022’s was approved 59-56. Next year’s budget is NIS 609 billion, this year’s budget is NIS 563 billion. Bennett welcomed the news as did coalition partners. “This is a day of celebration for the State of Israel after years of chaos,” he exclaimed. “We’ll keep going, full steam ahead.” Bennett added that passing the budget for two years completed a “complex move” and had rescued Israel from three years of instability. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid noted, “We took responsibility and kept our promise.” Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that the budget brings “certainty to Israel” as failure to agree could have resulted in new elections. Defence Minister Benny Gantz felt that passing the budget was “a win for the country but also a personal win for me”.
Gantz was taking a swipe at former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who did not see out his rotation agreement with the former Blue & White leader. “Whoever acted out of personal motives and caused great harm to the country and its citizens sits in the opposition, and those who care for Israel’s citizens are in the coalition today,” he said. Knesset Speaker Mickey Levy blasted the opposition for leaving the plenum before results were announced. “The State of Israel finally has a budget,” Levy noted. “We will have political stability, and government ministries will be able to operate in an orderly manner.” He added, “I am disappointed that the opposition failed to accept the democratic process. It is time for us to have a different, more respectful discourse.” Netanyahu is now at a cross roads as head of the opposition and could face a leadership contest.
The opposition nevertheless slated the result with the Likud Party noting the opposition was united to “topple” a dangerous government “quicker than they think”. Likud issued a statement, “After getting Bennett and Lapid’s terrible budget passed, which will drive up prices, raise taxes and transfer tens of billions of shekels from Israeli citizens to the Islamic Movement, the chances that the government will collapse have increased.” Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri added that the budget was a “brutal and deliberate blow” to the elderly, weak, residents of the periphery and large families. Passing the budget has ended two years impasse among MKs and an election is finally off the agenda for a period. The Knesset voted for 35 hours to overcome 800 objections by the opposition although bizarrely, some MKs accidentally voted for the wrong side including Netanyahu. The budget ensures “economic and political” stability for Bennett, who vowed that the Prime Minister rotation agreement with Lapid would take place in September 2023 in a press conference with the foreign minister and Lieberman on Saturday night. “With quiet persistence and joint effort, we have steered the ship to safe shores,” Bennett said. “The government is stable, it will serve a full term,” he said. “The stability that we brought with the formation of the government and the passage of the budget, the fact that we are not in a fifth election campaign, is a blessing and a great gift for the State of Israel. “Our next mission is to utilise this stability and deal with the challenges and problems that have been neglected for years, housing costs, traffic jams that are out of control, Israel’s infamous cost of living, the helplessness of the people in the face of rampaging crime and the loss of governance in the Negev. Without delay, without despairing in advance, even if the tasks are great, and even if they take time, we will get started.” Bennett added, “The great test of this government, of all of us, is in showing restraint. If we succeed in resisting the temptation to
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
quarrel and bicker, if we succeed in focusing on what unites us and not on what divides us, if we lay aside for a moment the rivalries between us, at long last there are no elections on the horizon, we will join hands, focus on the people of Israel and its major security, social and economic challenges and we will take the State of Israel, which is unlike any other country in the world, ten steps forward.” Bennett praised Lapid as “a partner and friend” and Lieberman for “outstanding work.” Lieberman backed the coalition despite some issues. “Sometimes there is friction and conflict,” he explained. “The cooperation and mutual responsibility between ministers and heads of parties is something I have never seen before.” Lapid said the government had taken responsibility and fulfilled promises to restore sanity to the State of Israel. “Instead of stabbing each other in the back, we lent support, we had each other’s back,” he noted. “In this most complex coalition of the State of Israel, we put ego aside in order to build the machine that will move the country. “We have made history.” Bennett said at his weekly Cabinet meeting on Sunday, “We are entering a new stage. The government is on stable ground.” He added, “Each minister now has a budget. This is the time for thorough work plans, to define measurable goals, to plan timetables, and to start working. We are here to help with everything, to give backing and support, with all the tools at the disposal of the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister’s Office. Our goal is stability and quiet in all non-important areas, and the momentum of great action in all of the truly important things that interest the people.” Political stability is in place but the coalition will be judged on how Bennett executes the budget and there are challenges. Issues include building projects in East Jerusalem and West Bank, the Citizenship bill and term-limits for prime ministers. Religious issues include non-Orthodox Jewish prayer at the Western Wall, drafting ultra-Orthodox men into the IDF and public transportation for secular Israelis on Sabbath. Political writers anticipated the budget would pass in the build up to the vote. The Bank of Israel called on the Knesset to pass the budget as a pro-rata version of the 2019 budget was operating, which economists believed had stifled growth. Ahead of the vote, the government passed an economic package to slowly lift the minimum wage to 6,000 shekels a month by 2025 from currently 5,300 shekels a month. Civil workers’ salaries would be frozen with the labour union agreeing not to strike for a year during negotiations.

BoD newly appointed chief executive Michael Wegier added, “One of the newest projects we have is this wonderful partnership with EcoSynagogue. It has been an absolute privilege to hear about the extraordinary work you are doing and are leading on behalf of this planet.” Helen Stephens of Eco Church launched a scheme to protect land across Britain to restore 75,000 acres of land back to nature. “By regenerating different types of ecosystem such as forests and wetlands we can absorb more CO2 from the atmosphere,” she said. “My hope for COP26 is that leaders will be bold and have the courage to make the commitments that are needed.” Prubhiyot Singh (ECOSikhUK), Mark Bryant (UFEES/EcoIslam), Gopal Patel (Bhumi Global) and Stephen Curran (Eco-Congregation Scotland) offered notable observations.

Chelsea fan jailed over antisemitic tweets BY ADAM MOSES A Chelsea season ticket holder has begun an eight-week prison sentence after sending antisemitic and racist tweets that violated the Malicious Communications Act. Campaign Against Antisemitism have welcomed the ruling against Nathan Blagg, 21, of Retford, with seven counts of sending by public communication network an offensive message at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The charges in September relate to tweets sent September 2020 to February 2021. CAA said the jail term sends a clear message there is “no place for antisemitism in football”. “We commend Chelsea FC and the police for investigating and seeing the case through,” noted CAA. “Kicking racism out of football will only succeed when all interested parties cooperate, as they have done in this case.” Action Against Antisemitism were pleased to see the Chelsea fan jailed. Blagg pleaded guilty to the counts identified by the Premier League club following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police. Prosecutor David Roberts said there was a “racially aggravated” element because of the “antisemitic nature” to a number of
tweets including a picture of the Auschwitz concentration camp train tracks with the message, “Spurs are on their way to Auschwitz.” Roberts said messages were alleged to be “racially aggravated” due to the context of Tottenham Hotspur fans “coming from a Jewish area”. Maeve Thornton, defending, reportedly said Blagg had been suffering at the time from “low moods” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She noted, “With hindsight, he now understands how wrong this is. He is indeed very remorseful and very apologetic.” The court heard Blagg was initially reported by a West Brom fan in September 2020 to Chelsea over a Tweet about former Baggies legend Cyrille Regis. Posts were investigated by Chelsea’s security team who identified racist Tweets about black football players and antisemitic tweets, including Nazi salutes being performed. The racist posts were forwarded to police, who identified Blagg’s account. Blagg also posted a series of antisemitic Tweets before Chelsea vs Tottenham derby clashes on November 29 2020 and February 4 this year. One Tweet read, “Can’t beat days like this, can be as horrible as I like and not be

judged it’s mint.” Another post noted, “Yids tomorrow, which means for the next 48 hours I can tweet as much antisemitism as I want without being told off.” The next day, Blagg wrote: “Gas a Jew, Jew, Jew.” Blagg was arrested at his home address last February. Detective Constable Suzanne Smith told the Nottingham Post that Blagg thought he could post “grossly offensive and abusive messages about other football fans and players with impunity.” The Met Police investigating officer added, “This investigation demonstrates that nobody can post racist, anti-Semitic or hateful abuse on social media without consequences.” Detective Constable Smith thanked Chelsea for their input and appealed to people to report social media abuse to the police on 101 or tweeting @MetCC.
Campaign Against Antisemitism have blasted Insulate Britain for comparing people not acting over climate change to inactive Germans to the Nazi regime before the Holocaust. The eco protesters have grabbed headlines in obstructing major roads, who now have detractors after claiming the Archbishop of Canterbury should not have apologised for comparing climate talks with the run-up to the Holocaust. Archbishop Justin Welby issued an unserved apology, but an Insulate Britain spokesman tweeted, “Those who know and are silent now will be known as bystanders, just as those amongst the general population in Germany who were passive and indifferent to the rise of Nazi Germany and the escalating persecution that culminated in the Holocaust.” After a furore over the tweet, the group deleted the post, noting, “Those who know and are silent now will be remembered as painfully and cruelly as those who ignored the horrors of Nazi Germany.” The group has not apologised for this tweet. A CAA spokesperson said, “It is startling that Insulate Britain should double down on the comparison and baselessly reference the Holocaust, which was a deliberate and systematic genocide, entirely different from the perceived climate apathy which the fringe group is protesting. Insulate Britain will find that making such comparisons will not strengthen its cause.”

Group tourists with two vaccinations can enter Israel. The government’s Corona Cabinet backed the proposed measures initiated by Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz and Tourism Minister Yoel Razvozov as part of the re-opening of tourism to Israel. The latest development stands even if more than six months have passed since the last vaccine but they must meet certain conditions. Entry permission must be received from the Ministry of Tourism before the group’s arrival in Israel. All members of the group must be inoculated with vaccines approved by the World Health Organisation and arrive from “green” and “yellow” countries according the Ministry of Health. The group of 5 to 40 tourists must travel as a “capsule” with restrictions on movement. During the first seven days of a stay, non-protected tourists must have either a negative PCR test taken within the previous 72 hours or a negative antigen test taken within the previous 24 hours. The group leader must report to the Ministry of Tourism on imYoel Razvozov plementation of tests to provide
“In accordance with our ongoing policy we will continue to live alongside corona,” noted Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz. “We take all the precautions and supervision to maintain public health and quickly identify new variants. In addition, we are maintaining the Israeli economy, education, culture, tourism and daily routine in Israel.” Tourism Minister Yoel Razvozov added, “We still have a long way to go to bring back tourism, we must act swiftly but surely in order to increase the numbers of incoming tourists.” He added, “The Israeli economy needs tourism as do, of course, the employees in the tourism industry.” The new outline is not applicable to the UK due to its COVID-19 “orange” status. Sharon Ehrlich Bershadsky, Director, Israel Government Tourist office, London, welcomed the steps taken by the Israeli cabinet to simplify the system for international travel. Whilst the UK is on the “orange” list, tourist groups are required to show proof of vaccination in 180 days or of a third booster vaccine before travelling to Israel. PHOTO: FACEBOOK “The Israeli

government regularly reviews the lists so we’d strongly recommend checking,” she said. Only last week Israel began removing restrictions to enable individual tourists to enter Israel. And Razvozov was hopeful restrictions would be further lifted for families in the not too distant future. Razvozov was in demand at the Israeli Pavilion at the World Travel Market at ExCel London, stressing the positives for visitors from over 40 countries traveling to the Holy Land. “As we open the borders for individual tourists, it’s important British visitors re-discover Israel,” he said. “This is just the first step in the right direction.” “The British market is of great importance for the Israeli tourism industry,” added Razvozov. Issues remain and the vaccination guidance will be continually evaluated but the Israeli minister is focused on the future. There was guarded optimism regarding families with children being able to again travel to Israel and of the country being open for visitors at Pesach and the next summer. WHO approved vaccines include AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer which are used as boosters in the United Kingdom. Full details for travellers are available online.

EJC presents antisemitism study on Kristallnacht anniversary BY DAVID SAFFER European Jewish Congress has presented a detailed study how to combat antisemitism on the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht. An End to Antisemitism! was conducted by the EJC with the Austrian National Council and City of Vienna. The five-part work follows an international conference in Vienna as a collaboration between the University of Vienna together with New York and Tel Aviv universities and EJC in 2018. “This is the most ambitious study of the problem of antisemitism,” said ECJ President Dr. Moshe Kantor at the official release this week. “More importantly, it details the groundwork for a united and concerted preventive action plan for society today and in the future.” He added, “Our objective is to distribute this study as widely as possible, so that it can be used as a force multiplier by governments, academics, religious institutions, the media and other organisations.” The study aims to prevent antisemitism in the current political and social climate and future. Some 119 international experts analysed every aspect of antisemitism before its recommendations. Authors included Katharina von Schnurbein (European Commission Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism), Natan Sharansky (former Chairman of the Jewish Agency), Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa (Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem) and Imam Hassen Chalgoumi (President of the Conférence des Imams de France). The first part of the study details solutions and recommendations for decision-makers, the second overviews Jew-hatred in religion, the third looks at the history of antisemitism, fourth highlights philosophy, pedagogy and social sciences, the fifth explores manifestations media, legal and political worlds. Other speakers at the event included ANC President Wolfgang Sobotka, Karl Nehammer, Federal Minister of the Interior, Karoline Edtstadler, Federal Minister of European Affairs and Dr. Ariel Muzicant, EJC Vice President. “Eighty-three years after Kristallnacht and 76 years after the end of the Shoah,
11 NOVEMBER 2021 Chamberlain wasn’t keen initially, however, Home Secretary Sir Samuel Hoare, himself a Quaker, raised it in Cabinet where Lord Halifax, the Foreign Secretary, backed it, believing this positive action could bring America on board as allies against the Nazis. On November 21 1938, the matter was raised in Parliament and an agreement passed for an unlimited number of child refugees to be given temporary refuge in Britain so long as there was no recourse to public funds. A special travel permit would be issued to eliminate the need for formal documents. With funding from the CBF, the Children’s Inter-Aid Committee and The Society of Friends (Quakers) swung into action and on December 2nd, the first trainload of 200 children arrived at Harwich. The Movement for the Care of Children from Germany (MCCG) oversaw the rescue effort. The Jewish Refugee Committee, a branch of the CBF, were to take children over the age of 16 and help them gain training and employment whilst the MCCG placed younger children with families. Between December 1938 and September 1939, 10,000 children were brought to safety. After the war, MCCG was absorbed into the Jewish Refugee Committee who took care of ongoing welfare needs of the Kindertransport children. hatred, disinformation, conspiracy theories about Jews and the Jewish state are more than ever circulating online and poisoning hearts and minds,” Dr. Kantor said. “Thanks to significant efforts around Europe, we are seeing great progress at the political level. Nonetheless, the problem of antisemitism in society is unfortunately getting worse. So, while there is an obvious will on the part of governments to fight Jew-hatred, they must be given the tools to have the most impact to suppress this scourge.” Dr. Kantor was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria by Sobotka. The accolade is Austria’s highest honour and was given by Sobotka for fighting antisemitism, racism, extremism and intolerance, for preserving the memory of the Shoah and revitalising Jewish life in Europe. Dr Kantor said that the Republic of Austria was a nation that had taken its role in the fight against antisemitism seriously. “It has led the way on many issues, including giving Holocaust survivors a priority in receiving Covid-19 vaccines and safeguarding a Jewish future,” he explained. “I remain ready, willing and available to assist Austria in meeting these challenges.” Past recipients of the award include the Queen, Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, former French president

Jacques Chirac and Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal. Germany recalls the victims of Kristallnacht annually. Last year, the commemoration came 12 months after the Halle shooting where a 27-year-old neo-Nazi shot and killed two people at a synagogue. In November 1938, rioters ransacked Jewish homes, hospitals and schools, around 100 Jews were murdered, 267 synagogues were burnt down across Germany and Austria while 7,000 Jewish-owned businesses destroyed. The Nazis regime deported 30,000 Jews to concentration camps. World Jewish Relief, formerly known as The Central British Fund for German Jewry (CBF), was instrumental in organising the rescue of children from Nazi Europe. Immediately after Kristallnacht, CBF founders Lionel De Rothschild and Chaim Weizmann, together with a small delegation of prominent British Jews comprising Lord Samuel, Lord Bearsted, Chief Rabbi Dr Joseph Hertz and Neville Laski, met with Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to appeal for his help in rescuing children from the Nazis by bringing them to Britain. They proposed financial support, education and training and asked that the need for German travel documents and British visas be waived in order to expedite the mission.

The Metropolitan Police have arrested a suspect who allegedly spray painted “**** Jews” outside a yeshiva in Gateshead earlier this month. The individual was apprehended by yeshiva security before police arrived. It has been reported two similar incidents occurred in the area within the last month. A Northumbria Police spokesperson said officers were treating the incident as a hate crime. Police are investigating other antisemitic incidents. Appeals have been made for witnesses after a 16-year-old was detained on suspicion of religiously aggravated criminal damage after spray painting swastikas near Belsize Square Synagogue. The opinions on this page do not necessarily reflect the opinions of this newspaper
Some things have not changed OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN Kristallnacht (the Night of Broken Glass) was a pogrom against Jews carried out by the Nazi Party’s Sturmabteilung (SA) paramilitary forces along with civilians throughout Nazi Germany on 9–10 November 1938. The name Kristallnacht comes from the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings and synagogues were smashed. Jewish homes, hospitals and schools were ransacked. Rioters destroyed 267 synagogues throughout Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland (part of former Czechoslovakia). Over 7,000 Jewish businesses were damaged or destroyed and 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps. Early reports estimated that 91 were killed that night though modern analysis of German scholarly sources puts the figure much higher; when deaths from post-arrest maltreatment and subsequent suicides are included, the death toll
reaches the hundreds. That was 83 years ago. Today we live in a different world. The Shoah is a diminishing memory as the number of survivors decrease each year. Israel is stronger than ever and competing on the world stage in science, technology and medicine. In theory at least, the memory of Kristallnacht should be just that, something to remember against a current background of peace and understanding. Yet this is not the case. Despite the records and accounts, holocaust denial is alive and well and promoted in the Middle East and amongst the far right in Europe. In May of this year, 3 cars – covered with Palestinian flags - carrying a number of men drove 200 miles from Bradford to North London with the specific intention of intimidating Jews. They achieved this by yelling abuse via megaphones. No-one
was killed and no buildings were set on fire so perhaps it was not that bad. Pause for a moment though to consider what happened. The fact that no one was killed or property not damaged is irrelevant. What was of such concern was these people felt able to undertake this activity at all. Remember, the chants had nothing to do with Israel, they were “**** the Jews, rape their daughters”, coming from cars adorned with the Palestinian flag, evidence surely that for these people claiming freedom for Palestine really means driving Jews from the land of Israel. On Tuesday night, on the anniversary of Kristallnacht, Israeli Ambassador, Mrs Tzipi Hotovely, was able to address her audience and engage with them respectfully at the London School of Economics. When she left however, it was a different story. Agitators amongst those protesting

her presence, again carrying Palestinian flags, were responsible for creating a threatening atmosphere of violence as they got worryingly close to her car. The convoy in May and the actions of the protestors on Tuesday night do not represent a new wave of violence against the Jews in the UK. They do though demonstrate the depth of hatred being openly exhibited against Jews and Israel through the medium of pro Palestine protestors. These people are not interested in any peaceful solution to the issues facing Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, they are interested only in destroying the Jewish state and subordinating Jews. For there to be any progress, this hatred needs to be recognised and serious thought given to a way of finding those who genuinely seek peace and engage with them, though as matters stand this is likely to be hard task. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.
Antisemitism on Campus - a personal perspective OPINION PIECE BY BEN SWEIRY I am a second year student and a StandWithUs Emerson Fellow studying toward a degree in International Relations and Economics. Looking back to my first year at university, my awareness of the issues surrounding Israel on campus was not overly extensive and I don’t think I would have been able to tackle the issues, even if I had witnessed them. The anti-Israel sentiment on campus was evident and led me to sign up to StandWithUs UK’s Emerson Fellowship, but it is the same challenges that I faced that have also deterred me from naming my university institution in this article. However, since my induction, the Fellowship has provided me with both the confidence and the ability to think critically. Now, I can analyse lecture content and assess whether Israel, the only Jewish state in the world, is being held to a different standard than other nations by my university institution. As my journey through the Fellowship programme continued, I developed a plan to counter the mischaracterisation of the Jewish People as exclusively White-European. I set out to deliver an event aimed to educate students on the rich diversity of the Jewish Community. My Campus Coordinator and I arranged to facilitate a
panel of Jews from right across the globe, including Ashager Araro, an Ethiopian-Israeli, Lyn Julius, representing the Mizrahi Community and Fanya Donin, an American-Ashkenazi hailing from Eastern Europe. Finally, I utilised my leadership position spurred on by StandWithUs’ Personalised Track Programme to coordinate a group project - educating students on Israeli culture and cuisine through social media. I’m looking forward to continuing my journey as a SWU alumni and the further exchange of ideas on a global level having signed up to the SWU International Student Alliance during the summer-term. In February 2021, I experienced my first antisemitic incident on campus. Whilst my seminars on the Arab-Israeli conflict saw a few ill-informed students make farcical claims such as “Americans support Israel because the American Jews hold all the power in their country”, “Israel is a settler colonialist state”, or “Israel has
shut-off the Palestinian water supply”, I was able to refute and correct them thanks to the knowledge and resources that StandWithUs has provided. However, when a lecturer started to use terms such as the “Jewish lobby” and implied that Jewish people wielded a disproportionate amount of political power within the US’ political sphere, it became evident that a dangerous antisemitic trope was being disseminated by my professor. This message would be one in which the 200+ students who take the module would note and believe to be true. Students would naturally assume that content taught in lectures is factual, and so it was frightening to see that a university lecturer would attempt to educate the students in such a way that demonises the Jewish community, intentionally or otherwise. After liaising with my Campus Coordinator at StandWithUs, I was able to construct a complaint that was sent

to the lecturer and the course director, highlighting my concerns at the use of the term “Jewish lobby” and the impression it gave about Jewish people in politics to hundreds of unassuming students. Thankfully, the university agreed that the language used was unacceptable, and a swift decision was made to remove this particular part of the lecture and send an announcement to the students explaining why it was wrong. Today more than ever, being a pro-Israel Jewish student at university requires vigilance and extensive knowledge about who you are and what you represent on campus. I am grateful to StandWithUs for offering the training required to recognise and tackle antisemitism and anti-Israel bias as quickly as I have seen it. I would urge other like-minded students at university-age to educate themselves because it really does make a difference. On 14th and 15th November SWU UK is running its Generations for Israel campaign – a matched fundraiser to ensure StandWithUS can continue to support students to stand up, stand strong and stand proud of Israel and their Judaism.. StandWithUs UK’s mission is to educate about Israel and combat antisemitism. Student Ben Sweiry has written exclusive for the Jewish Weekly about his experiences on his university campus.

South judged he was too strong to overcall four hearts directly and so began with a takeout double. West led the two of clubs and East won with the king, with declarer dropping the jack. Declarer took the trump shift with the ace and drew the remaining trumps, discarding a low club from table. As there were only 13 points missing in the defensive hands, declarer placed the king of spades and queen of diamonds with East. So, he continued with the ace, king and another diamond. East has to win the third round of diamonds with the queen and was endplayed. If he exited with a spade declarer would make an overtrick. Instead, East placed the ace of clubs on the table. Declarer did not make the mistake of ruffing this card, instead discarding a low spade. East was now down to black cards and had to give declarer access to the dummy no matter what card he led next.

Grandparents GIFT It Forward
For the 5th year running, grandparents Geoff and Evelyn Wynne took their grandchildren to their local toy shop to buy presents and then wrap them for families supported by GIFT. Grandchildren Rafi Goldberg, a 12 year old Immanuel student and his 10 year old sister Gabi, a pupil at Mathilda Marks Kennedy look forward to this day every year. The grandparents told us “We have been very blessed and we wanted to share our gifts with children who may not have so much as well as involving our grandchildren. As we finished shopping and were walking to the car, Rafi put his hand on his heart and said ‘doing this makes me feel so good and it makes other children so happy too.’ Kevin, the very kind manager of Smyths Friern Barnet also gave us a discount when we told him why we were shopping, what a mensch!”
Yasmine Ittach GIFT’s Family Liason explained “As Chanukah approaches, we couldn’t be more grateful for the outpouring of love from givers in the form of toys and gifts for the children of GIFT’s vulnerable families. Another reflection of staggering kindness that lights up our community, is the recent shopping spree by the grandparents with their grandchildren at a local toy store, which is sure to bring joy and laughter to many homes. Thank you for lighting up the lives of our families, not just during festivals, but all year round.” In addition to GIFT’s many initiatives, the charity supports hundreds of households with weekly food parcels, toys over Chanukah and ongoing practical help. ‘Upheaval: The Journey of Menachem Begin’ film premier last month, StandWithUs UK was proud to host the film premier of Upheaval: The Journey of Menachem Begin – the inspirational life story of the former Israeli Prime Minister. One hundred and twenty StandWithUs UK supporters headed to the Everyman in Maida Vale to watch this captivating film, with previously unseen footage and interviews. The audience were privileged to hear from producer Rachel Greenberg who gave a fascinating insight into the making of the movie. StandWithUs UK held the event to launch their crowdfunding campaign – Generations for Israel - which will be taking place on 14th / 15th November. Students on campus are currently living through very worrying times. This is especially apparent in the present climate which is extremely hostile towards Jews and Israel. StandWithUs UK is dedicated to educating students about Israel, training the next generation to identify, challenge and stand strong in the face of antisemitism and Israel misinformation. StandWithUs has partnered with the producers and distributors of the film and has committed to bringing Upheaval to their students across the UK. Sara Sherrard, Executive Director of StandWithUs UK, said in her welcome speech last night that, “Begin’s life story is an inspiration to us all, and this film could not be more, timely as Jews across the world, once again face the spread of the age old virus, of antisemitism. Upheaval tackles the history of Begin’s life, with honesty and integrity, an approach mirrored in the StandWithUs core

principles of education.” Lana Saffrin Bettesh, Co-Chair of StandWithUs UK, said of the evening, “It was fantastic to see so many people come together to support StandWithUs UK and to be treated to such an evocative and inspriational film.” If you would like the opportunity to screen this film or would like to support the StandWithUs UK upcoming campaign, please contact Susannah at susannahs@ standwithus.com.

Cannabotech and the power of mushrooms BY YOSSI SAUNDERS As I walk through Westfield Shopping Centre in White City, my gaze falls upon an impressive looking brand new flagship store, directly opposite Tesla – ‘My Being,’ by Cannabotech. I have arrived to interview Elchanan Shaked, the charming and dynamic founder and CEO of one of the most exciting biochemical companies in the world – Cannabotech. I have always been interested in the great technologies coming out of Israel, with the high tech Israeli market right up there amongst the very best in the world. When it comes to medicine and the delicate art of understanding exactly how our bodies work, Israel is definitely leading the way. The Tesla store stands out because a car in a shop always stands out, so how does it’s new neighbour catch the eye? The first thing that struck me about the store was
the ‘James Bond’ feeling I got immediately upon looking at it. Impressive and futuristic looking body scanning machines greeted me as I walked in with the biggest and most fun looking one centred in the middle of the shop, surrounded by what looks like high tech golden and colourful red bull sized cans. It wasn’t long before the friendly white lab-coated staff ushered me in to try my luck at the big machine! Suddenly feeling like I was in Professor Dumbledore’s office in Hogwarts looking at his Pensive (Harry Potter fans will be familiar), I was awed at the vast array of options available to choose from by moving the ‘red bull cans’ around. Looking directly into the camera like something straight out of airport security, 40 seconds later I had my full body MOT. I scored 88% which seemed to impress the staff. The machine also checked many other vitals including my heart rate, blood
pressure, cholesterol and stress levels. I was promptly informed that I need more sleep! ( I run a newspaper, so that may not be happening anytime soon…) After downloading the app, I was presented with a six month plan to get back to top shape, with a range of affordable preventive care products, designed specifically to help consumers take control of today’s major health concerns. As well as more time on the pillow, advice and management includes looking

after immunity, muscle and joint fatigue, skin health and other conditions linked to a modern lifestyle. Sugarless coffee in hand, I sat down on a soft brown couch to learn from the master himself. Yossi: Nice to meet you Elchanan, very impressive store! Tell me your journey to this phenomenon. Elchanan: Glad you’re enjoying our shop! Medicinal mushrooms are ever so

mushroom research lab, at the university. His status is renowned in the field. Yossi: Was it easy to get Professor Wasser on board? Elchanan: I signed a contract to collaborate with the university and commercialise their knowhow. The cannabis industry has clearly started to boom but it is in the coming years
popular in the Far East region, and are the main active ingredients in many alternative health products around the world. The vast power from Hashem’s nature alone is not yet understood by the majority of people around the world. Mushrooms are everywhere, with so many different types and species, and for thousands of years people have been harnessing their tremendous power. According to one source, one of the ingredients in the Kohen Gadol’s Ketoret in the Beit Hamikdash ‘Bosem’ was along similar lines to today’s products. However, it is only in the past three decades that mushrooms have now become a serious focus of groundbreaking scientific research. In Israel and Germany, over 100,000 prescriptions annually contain Cannabis, America is full of it and the UK currently only does around 2000 per year, but that’s going to change in the next few years. Yossi: It seems like you’ve wanted to do this all your life! Elchanan: Ironically it could have been very different! My parents were born in Poland and after surviving the Holocaust, they met at a camp in Austria before their arrival in Israel during its year of independence in 1948. They had certificates to emigrate to the US as we had family in New York but took a decision to go to Israel, allowing me to go on and to build a career in the pharmaceutical industry.
Yossi: A good decision to go to Israel then… Elchanan: Yes definitely! I started my career at Egis Pharmaceuticals who were acquired by the giant US pharmaceutical company Perrigo in 2004. After seven years in the global executive management team, I started engaging in private businesses in the Far East which is where my expertise in the tremendous healing power of mushrooms developed. The next step in my journey was finding scientists, which included Prof. Solomon Wasser of Haifa University, a world expert in medicinal mushrooms. A pioneer in the field, Wasser ran a
that the industry will mature. I built my team from previous experiences in the industry and established the Cannabotech company with seven people in 2019. Whilst the CPD (cannabidiol) industry in Israel is developed, in Europe it will take time. Yossi: How will you stand out in the UK, when so many people are still to buy in to the idea? Elchanan: “We have invested millions to have a product that is unique and will clearly differentiate us. It will be a booming industry but you need to have

the proper products and appreciation. We have a very strong, experienced scientific team of professors and researchers. Our idea is to create prevention. Thirty years ago, the awareness of prevention was very low. The last five to 10 years we are aware that if we live properly we will improve a healthy life but there is a big gap between awareness and implementation. Our DNA is that we want to do what is easy, to make a change is complicated. We understand existing behaviour and want to work in small steps to improve our health. For me the future is bright, the future is with Cannabotech. Israel approved the export of medical cannabis earlier this year. The landmark ruling in May is expected to boost sales by hundreds of millions of dollars. The decision came over a year after the outgoing government backed legislation on cannabis. Israeli farms are among the world’s biggest producers of medical cannabis. At the time of the announcement over 10 farms and five factories in Israel met Health Ministry standards surrounding production. A number of companies have deals to sell cannabis in Europe and Canada when licenses are approved. In Israel, medical use of cannabis is permissible. Recreational use is illegal though largely decriminalised. The Economy Ministry estimates some 60,000 Israelis use medical cannabis, equating to 25 tonnes annually. Benefits of cannabis in the medical industry is an intense debating point. Different nations hold varying viewpoints. European countries and American states permit medical use. Canada were the first G7 country to legalise cannabis for recreational use in 2018. Yossi: A final word for our 60,000 readership? ImpACT in action Over a hundred teenage volunteers kicked off Project ImpACT’s first in-person volunteering event in 18 months as they launched a variety of meaningful social action projects. In an electric atmosphere the teens threw themselves into a diverse range of volunteering programmes for each year group. This included learning sign language to get a better awareness of the deaf community, tutoring Israeli children from underprivileged backgrounds through Zoom and cooking up 100 meals for food banks and homeless shelters. The volunteers were delighted to be back in-person and the mood was buzzing. Working together, teenagers made delicious ratatouille and apple crumble using food donated by the Felix Project who collect surplus food from local supermarkets and then deliver it to local charities. After the session, the cooked food was distributed by volunteers to local food banks and homeless shelters. Marcus, from the Felix Project said he was incredibly impressed by the ImpACT volunteers: “Watching these young people giving their time to prepare food for local people in need was amazing” Yael, an ImpACT Ambassador who helped run the session said: “It is great to

Grandparents speak out for Camp Simcha Grandparents of children supported by Camp Simcha have been sharing their stories in Jewish Legacy Awareness month to encourage people to leave a gift to the charity in their Wills. Camp Simcha Head of Fundraising Shoshana Copeland explained that it was part of a new campaign launched by the charity. “This is the first time we have run a big Legacy campaign, but we feel it is an important step in helping to secure the charity’s long-term future. With no Government funding, Camp Simcha is entirely reliant on the support of the community. In this year alone we have seen a 55% increase in referrals compared to last year. “The income from legacies can help us to ensure Camp Simcha will continue to be there supporting every family that needs us – so we are very grateful to our Camp Simcha grandparents for taking the time to tell people just how important the charity’s help was for them.” Leah and Barry Shamplin’s grandson, Sonny Nygate, and family were supported by Camp Simcha after Sonny was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma ten years ago. Thankfully he went into remission after treatment. “You have to not just see your grandchild unwell, you have to see the effect it has on your children, and your other grandchildren … and you are used to being able to try to take the pain away but you can’t,” said
Joey Levene and one of his volunteers at a Camp Simcha retreat
Sonny Nygate
Mrs Shamplin, from Essex. Gloria Levene, from Manchester, whose grandson Joey has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, agreed that as a grandparent you suffer twice over. “First impact that I saw was my son, who is a very strong young man, breaking down and crying. That was hard.
“If I could sum up what Camp Simcha meant to us – it was like being wrapped in a big duvet of love. I remember one time when Joey had a big thing at hospital; he had to go for an infusion and was very frightened. I don’t know how Camp Simcha found out but his ‘Big Brother’ volunteer turned up at the hospital – it was before Covid - to see

him and to bring him a balloon and other things. I don’t how they knew, but they were there and it was wonderful.” Michael Bibring, from Hertfordshire, first experienced the charity’s support, when his grandson, who is also called Joey, got diagnosed with a Wilms’ Tumour when he was three, while on holiday in France in summer 2020. “My relationship with Camp Simcha through all this has been just being blown away by them doing things you aren’t asking for or expecting. It’s like your brother or sister coming round. It’s incredible. That for me is their USP. “They say it is just ‘what we do’ but until you actually see it first-hand, you cannot imagine how they go above and beyond.” Joey is now back at school and doing well, having completed his treatment. Mr Shamplin said: “We know there are going to be more children needing their services. That’s not a possibility – it’s a definite thing that’s going to happen. With a legacy Camp Simcha can continue to do their wonderful work in the future. Mrs Shamplin added: “When the time comes, Barry and I will soon be revising our wills and we won’t forget Camp Simcha because Camp Simcha never forgot us. They were always there for us, and we’ll be there for them.” Find out more at www.campsimcha.org. uk/legacy

Nissim Black Chanukah Kisharon and Childs Hill Library to hold book signing Concert in Essex Nissim Baruch Black (born Damian Jamohl Black; December 9, 1986) is an Israeli-American rapper, songwriter, and record producer and a growing international sensation. What an amazing scoop that Chabad in Essex have manged to secure him for a grand Chanukah concert open to the whole Essex and wider community. Chabad has public Menorahs across Essex and hosts many events each Chanukah. Last year, as in-person events were not allowed at Chanukah time, a huge Drive-In Chanukah Concert was arranged which attracted almost 1,000 people, the largest Chanukah gathering ever in Essex which left the community thirsty for more such fun and inclusive festival events. Rabbi Odom Brandman, of Chabad Buckhurst Hill, who is overseeing this concert, said “Chabad is always looking to grow and think out of the box to inspire the community. Nissim has an amazing story, is a unique and special character and will be an inspiration to all who attend this concert”. Finding the right venue and securing everything we need to make this happen hasn’t been easy and we are currently doing some fundraising so that we can make the tickets affordable to all. Bringing in Nissim, hiring a suitable venue and putting together the production for a great evening has been challenging and we are looking for ward to pulling off an extremely memora-
ble evening for the community. Nissim Black has been a gangsta rapper, a gang member, and a faith seeker. But it is his current incarnation that is here to stay: an African American Hasidic Jew who brings sharp beats and hooked-filled rhymes to the masses. His single of 2020, “Mothaland Bounce” is a confluence of everything he’s ever done, and everywhere he’s ever been. The vibe is old school, but the song is thoroughly fresh, pairing big beats with an African hook and a catchy chorus for a video that has already garnered 4.5 million views on YouTube! The new tunes feature Black’s melodic singing mixed with silky smooth beats and his nimble verbal sparring; Black’s music has always leaned heavily on melody, but he had to wait for hip hop to catch up. After a long discovery process, both musically and personally, Black has finally found his true identity and he is looking forward to sharing it with us. Nissim has not been to London for a good few years now, so this concert is a really special opportunity. Based in Essex, it is easily accessible to all the local Essex communities, but is also not that far from Golders Green or Stamford Hill for people who may want to travel for such an amazing opportunity. Tickets are available on: www.jewishessex. com – there are only 1,200 tickets on sale, so don’t miss out before they sell out! This is guaranteed to sell out fast!

Work Avenue launches student programme
Work Avenue has launched a Student Ambassadors programme after a successful trial run during lockdown. Students and graduates signing up will spread the word on campus about how the employment and business support organisation can help participants with dedicated events and services including the flagship annual Graduate Careers Month. The scheme is the brainchild of Nathalie Sadie, a Biomedical Science student at the University of Birmingham. Despite benefitting from what Work Avenue offers she was surprised the organisation wasn’t well-known among peers. “Work Avenue helped me to get a year in industry at Pfizer, but I felt others at university did not know about them and the services that they offer,” she explained. “Our trial cohort were a huge factor in the success of graduate month this year.”
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
The programme has officially opened so students and graduates can join via the Work Avenue website. As well boosting CVs, Ambassadors receive priority for dedicated events and guidance. “We understand the challenges facing students as they consider the myriad of options post university, and know how overwhelming and confusing it can be,” commented Work Avenue CEO David Arden. “Ambassadors are here to ensure we reach as many of their peers as we can to support them through all aspects of their preparation for work and job search. Dedicated services are run by experienced professionals and our services are free of charge. There is nothing to lose.” Information and to register as a Student Ambassador: www.theworkavenue.org. uk/ugrads

It’s a match for Norwood as community helps charity to £3.3 million Norwood supporters, staff and the wider community spurred the UK’s oldest Jewish charity on to raising £3.3 million over 36 hours on Sunday and Monday as part of its #TogetherWeAre campaign. The fundraiser was Norwood’s first-ever matched giving campaign and was held in place of the charity’s Annual Dinner. The charity, which supports people with learning disabilities and autism and children and families facing challenges, exceeded its target of £2.6 million following a bonus fundraising round, which will help Norwood continue to adapt its service provision to meet the community’s changing needs. The campaign followed a recent Survation poll of the Jewish community, commissioned by Norwood, which found that almost a quarter of respondents thought that they or a family member would likely need to access some of the support services Norwood provides within the next three years. Speaking at the end of the two-day campaign, Norwood’s Chief Executive Dr Beverley Jacobson paid tribute to the “incredible” support the charity had received from its existing donors and the wider community alike. “The #TogetherWeAre campaign was conceived to celebrate the relationships

For that, we are incredibly grateful. “With society’s needs having changed profoundly over the past 20 months, Norwood’s services have become even more integral for the children and families we support. Our adult services have also experienced increased pressure during this period, which has meant that young adults have not been able to easily transition to the next stage of support. “The timing of this funding is therefore perfect as we look to ensure that our services meet the needs of the community in the right locations, in right ways and at the right time. We are ambitious for what we can achieve in the coming year, from ensuring that our adult services, accommodation, care and activities are defining new standards of excellence to supporting parents who are struggling to diagnose their children’s challenges or access specific support services. Above all, we are committed to engaging with the people we support in new ways so that we can be there for them wherever, whenever and however they need us to enable them to succeed at every stage of their lives.”

From the front line… It’s not where you go, but how you get there. BY JACQUELINE CURZON Cop26 in Glasgow is still demanding political attention with a few days to go. A notable invitee evidently caused a bit of a racket with a gaseous emission all of his own, which went down rather badly. The summit has received largely negative press over the various global transport means the attendees used to reach Glasgow. For a UK councillor such as Phelim MacCafferty [Green Party] to fly to Glasgow, using 137kg of emissions, rather than using his brain and taking the train (20kg of emissions) shows blatant disregard for effects of climate change. If it weren’t a climate summit it would be almost comical. Add to the equation the spiralling temporary cost of hotel rooms (average being a 3000% increase), where for a tidy £1400 you could book a room normally costing £42. One can see why this prompted the booking of 2 Eastern European cruise liners to function as floating dormitories, and other delegates were of necessity forced to book rooms as far as 130 miles away, all of which added to the farce. As the desperation became more time critical and public, the Scottish Government appealed to residents to open up their homes for conference goers to access their spare rooms. This was called the Cop26 Homestay scheme. I have a friend who was in the fortunate position of being able to offer such a delegate his spare room, but not all folks have the luxury of space or tranquility for such an offer to be practical. It would be interesting to find out how many total air miles were covered by the delegates present for the summit. Add to that several likely tons of fast food waste, plus delegates coming from countries with limited vaccination programmes and we could perhaps have made a case for zoom attendance, or Cop26 Stay-at-Home scheme. The RMT Union quickly announced strikes by their train drivers, designed to cause further disruption, and taking the biscuit were strikes by refuse collectors. In a city which had already reduced bin collections to once every 3 weeks, how could such striking be tolerated? NHS Scotland have admitted they have cancelled or rescheduled hundreds of f2f appointments in order to minimise traffic volume. How thoughtful! Assistant Chief Constable Bernie Higgins, the gold commander for the event, said police on the ground ‘will facilitate unlawful protest, to a point’ being fair, friendly and accommodating.‘ And that’s just towards the protesters, who will presumably glue themselves to pavements, doors, vehicles etc causing maximum disruption. Patrick Harvey, co-leader of the Greens, the bedfellow of SNP, has publicly said he supports ‘use of direct action’ by climate change protesters, urging them to be ‘creative.’ Forget the Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain and the others, let’s

just Humiliate Britain on the world stage. Can’t think why the Summit wasn’t scheduled somewhere else? Anywhere else, to be ‘fair and accommodating’ to the 25,000 delegates and 125 world leaders. Now to some fascinating obituaries. Viktor Bryukhanov (85) built and managed the nuclear power plant at Chernobyl until April 1986, when a completely unexpected but devastating explosion scattered radioactive material across the northern hemisphere. Bryukhanov was largely made the scapegoat for the failings and sentenced to 10 years in the penal colony of Donetsk. One of four children of a glazier and a cleaner, Viktor Petrovich Bryukhanov was born in Tashkent in 1935 and moved to Ukraine after completing his degree in Electrical Engineering. By 1970 he had risen up the ranks to the position of Deputy Chief Engineer at Slavyanskaya thermal power plant, and the same year was tasked to build a massive nuclear power plant, alongside a city - Pripyat - to house its workers. Within 14 years the VI Lenin Nuclear Power Station at Chernobyl was up and running, generating power for 30 million homes and businesses. The plant ran with four RBMK nuclear reactors, an operating system the west had rejected because of design flaws. Nonetheless in 1986 Pripyat boasted a population of 50,000 residents with schools, reasonably well stocked supermarkets and sports facilities. Despite a Soviet minister claiming the odds of a nuclear meltdown being 1 in 10,000 years, there had been issues with construction, including the substitution of a regulation non-flammable roof on the machine hall, with a highly flammable bitumen roof. This was to add a layer of certain catastrophe to probable disaster. The accident happened on Friday 25th April 1986 in Reactor 4, which Bryukhanov had signed off as having completed all safety tests 3 years earlier. In fact it still had one test to run : - to assess the plants ability to keep the reactor cool in the event of a
power cut. At the last minute the test was delayed, which left the test in the hands of the more inexperienced night staff. After less than one minute running the test, it was obvious things were going very badly wrong, and the reactor was in danger of exploding. Bryukhanov was called out 30 mins after the explosion, when Geiger counters were registering high - but not critical - levels of radiation. Readings showing 100 times higher than normal were simply dismissed as being faulty. By 7am the fires appeared under control and Bryukhanov sent a report to Moscow indicating that the situation was stable. He quoted a radiation reading showing high, but not apparently deadly, readings, reassuring them that mass evacuation of Pripyat was unnecessary. Unbeknownst to the managers, the counters were never going to reach these gargantuan levels, recording instead only the maximum readings preset for the machine. Decisions were passed back to Moscow, under the leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev, where a meeting scheduled for Sunday was downgraded and delayed until Monday. A commission arrived in Pripyat by late Saturday evening and realisation then sunk in as to the enormity of the disaster. The evacuation began on Sunday, some 36 hours after the explosion, too late for the many who would perish from radiation sickness. Today, Pripyat is mainly a ghost town, beginning to come alive. The hospital is still as it was, as if everyone had simply run away, with beds, bottles and blankets hastily discarded and clothing thrown into piles with hazard tape flapping idly in the breeze. Playground equipment lies rusting and still, like a mechanical predator waiting to snatch at new lives. Scavengers have broken into parts of the reactor, stealing souvenirs, including the famous shutdown switch AZ-5, which could have been turned off; the residential tower blocks are encased in monstrous, suffocating vegetation and animals run around, wary of people but evidently surviving on something. A very few residents refused to leave in 1986 and miraculously are still alive whilst others are requesting to return, arguing after 35 years, it cannot still be dangerous, although Geiger readings would disagree. A recent documentary showed that the main hall had a new replacement protective casing built over the original in 2016, a large steel structure called the ‘New Safe Containment’ is expected to last around 100 years, which should protect it for further generations. Sentenced to 10 years in a famous closed doors show-trial, Bryukhanov and five others were accorded full responsibility for the disaster, which does seem disingenuous and unfair. After serving half the sentence he was released and moved to Kiev where he worked for Ukraine’s Economic Development and Trade Ministry.
This week’s news mentions that Nadhim Zahawi, the Education Secretary, has returned from his visit to Auschwitz, describing it as ‘a life changing experience.’ To state this is almost to belittle it, but I suppose there are few words which could sum up the enormity of evil, abuse and degradation which took place there. This leads me indirectly to the obituary of Lili Stern-Pohlmann (91) a Holocaust survivor who died at her home in London. She was born in Lvov, Poland, in March 1929, and lived with her family in Kazimierz, the Jewish quarter, where she and brother Uriel enjoyed a happy childhood. In summer 1939 they were on holiday in Poronin, Poland, when war became inevitable and they dutifully curtailed their holiday and returned to Krakow. In August 1939 her father Filip Stern put his wife and two children on a train to Lvov, where their grandparents lived; this was to be the last train to depart Krakow before war broke out the following day. By June 1941 the city of Lvov was retaken by German troops, and a ghetto was set up in November. By spring 1942 deportations to the death camp Belzec had begun, and the Sterns went into hiding. His wife, Cecylia - a talented dress designer - would hide in a shop with Lili, whilst the father would take her brother Uriel with him to his carpentry job. After only one day of using a safety message known only to each other, Filip failed to repeat the message, it later emerged that he had been arrested. Cecylia contacted one of her German customers and asked if she would hide her daughter. Lili then stayed with this kindly, if somewhat eccentric, woman called Frau Irmgard Wieth, who was attached to the German occupying forces. When Cecylia realised the ghetto had been liquidated, she also sought safety with Frau Wieth, who agreed to hide her with Lili. The apartment was in a SS controlled area, with the Head of the Ukrainian police living in the flat downstairs. For this incredible act of bravery Irmgard Wieth was made a Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in 1968. After the war, Lili was one of 123 Jewish children brought to the UK under a programme led by Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld. Arriving on her 16th birthday, she remarked it was ‘like a fairytale.’ A year later her mother joined her, both being the only survivors of their family. She spoke tirelessly on the Holocaust, saying ‘If we, the last generation, don’t talk about it, then that’s it! I owe it to posterity.’ In 2007 she was awarded the Commander’s Cross of Polonia Restituta, and in 2020 was appointed MBE for services to Holocaust education, awareness and human relations. May her message live on.

Reducing Sugar BY DENISE PHILIPS This week is ‘Sugar Awareness’ week (814 November). It is a timely opportunity reduce to sugar consumption in the UK and this year, focusses on snacks, and how they contribute to daily sugar intake. From a young age, children see marketing communications for sugary snacks and get used to their sweet taste. This can obviously lead to bad eating habits in the future. So I thought I would share some ideas on good alternatives that will allow you to reduce the amount of refined sugar in mainstream recipes. As a general rule, you can reduce sugar by as much as 20% in a recipe without it affecting the sweetness too much. So if it says add 100g of sugar, try it with 80g. However, do remember that sugar is a preservative and keeps baked goods moist, so watch out for over-baking— check for ‘doneness’ earlier than usual and don’t expect your baked good to last as long as they might ordinarily. Also, it is best not to play around with the quantity of sugar in ice cream or frozen desserts: sugar keeps frozen desserts from freezing solid, so you would need something else like alcohol in the mix to keep your ice cream from becoming as hard as ice! But the best way of cutting sugar
content is to use one of the many good sugar substitutes that are now readily available. These include vegetables in baking such as: courgettes, parsnips, chestnuts, carrots, beetroot and even pumpkin. They improve the texture, keep baked goods moist, add fibre and nutrients. The vegetables can be added grated raw or cooked and pureed. Dates and figs add a delicious natural sweetness and offer several health benefits. If pureed, they produce a thick paste which can be used as a 1-to-1 replacement for refined sugar. Apple sauce and other fruit purees, for example banana or berries, also blend well in baking in particular cakes, breads, and muffins. If you buy readymade apple sauce and purees, be sure to select the unsweetened products, those with no sugar. The baby food section of the supermarket will often stock these. Monk fruit and stevia are non-nutritive sweeteners. This means they have little-to-no calories or nutrients. Both are marketed as low/low calories alternatives to sugars and more natural alternatives to artificial sweeteners containing saccharine and other synthetic ingredients. There is also agave nectar which is a sweet syrup made from the filtered juice of the agave plant, native to Mexico. Honey is another alternative to refined sugar and this is better than agave nectar
Method 1. For the base, blitz the walnuts in a food processor until you get coarse crumbs. Add the remaining ingredients and blitz until well incorporated. 2. Press the mixture evenly into a cling film-lined 20cm round springform cake tin. Set aside. 3. For the filling, blitz the filling ingredients until well incorporated and smooth. 4. Taste the sweetness and add more dates as you wish. 5. Pour into the tin and smooth out using a wet spatula or spoon. 6. Cover with cling film and place into the freezer for 2 hours. 7. Remove 1 hour before serving. 8. Dust the top with cocoa powder and decorate with chocolate nibs and chocolate sprinkles.
because it is higher in antioxidants. Honey has a lower GI value than sugar, meaning that it does not raise blood sugar levels as quickly. Honey is sweeter than sugar, so you may need less of it, but it does have slightly more calories per teaspoon so it’s wise to keep a close eye on your portion sizes.

To conclude, reducing sugar should be part of your complete eating plan for good health. For optimal health, it’s best to eat mostly whole, nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, fish, drink more water and enjoy sugary foods sparingly or use the above alternate suggestions in more of your everyday cooking.

Dear Rabbi Can you please tell me if you think it is selfish of me to have another baby? We have 3, but I would love one more. We are not poor but certainly not rich, just a normal family. I’m all for ‘the more Jews in the world the better’ but my husband and I need your advice very much. If you think it would be selfish of us to have another baby that would have to share a bedroom with one of its siblings, we would not even discuss it further, but if you think it’s OK to bring another child into the world then we can seriously think about it. I understand you might find this a silly problem but its really important to me. Natasha Dear Natasha I don’t think it is a silly question. I’m just kinda’ spooked that my column has reached a crescendo upon which such life making decisions are being based. Let me get straight to the point. It’s not about “the more Jews in the world, the merrier.” It’s about adding that extra dimension of bliss into your own home. Kabbalah tells us that each child is added blessing in your family. I think it selfish when people decide not to have more children simply because it might cramp their lifestyle. When an annual holiday to the Barbados takes precedence over another baby, then priorities have fallen out of sync. I’ve always maintained - whatever number of children one decides on, go for one more. I’ve heard from many past their
childbearing years how they wish they had. So go for it, with my blessing for an easy pregnancy and a healthy birth and please be sure to write back and inform me of the good news as and when.
CAN A COHEN QUIT?
Dear Rabbi I was recently in attendance at a Chupah and the Rabbi announced that the groom is marrying a widow and as such he is formally forfeiting his Cohen (priesthood) status for the marriage to proceed. Is it indeed so that Cohanim can in fact forfeit this G-d given privilege? Hilton Dear Hilton I am amused at the Rabbi’s assumption that such a declaration can make any difference. I am going to safely assume that this was not an Orthodox Chupah, for a number of reasons. Firstly, no, you cannot rescind your priesthood in pursuit of your own pleasures, no matter what gibberish declaration the rabbi makes under the Chupah. For a Cohen to marry someone forbidden to him is a Biblical violation. When he does, he annuls the priesthood status for his future offspring. He too then loses certain privileges though his personal status remains. Second, and here’s the real kicker: A Cohen is not restricted from marrying a widow (this as opposed to a convert or divorcee). So no declaration was required in any event. Only a rabbi who would have assumed the former would not know about the latter.
Pirkei Avot Rabbi Hananiah ben Hakinai said: one who wakes up at night, or walks .. alone and turns his heart to idle matters, behold, this man is mortally guilty. According to the famous commentator, the ‘Bartenura’(not to be confused with the wine!) says that this Mishnah is explaining to us that because night is the time of demons, therefore one who wanders on a road alone is in danger because of the potential robbers and several other bad occurrences. There are many instances across the Tal-

ANALYSING ASSISTED DYING
Dear Rabbi As a High School Junior student in the Gifted and Talented Program at Eastern Regional High School in New Jersey, I am currently conducting research for an independent study project on the topic of euthanasia/assisted suicide. To understand all aspects of the topic I am interviewing different religious individuals asking their opinions on the issue according their faith. I thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my questions that follow. 1. What are your views according to the Jewish faith regarding the use of assisted suicide? 2. When a patient seeks to end his/her life due to unbearable suffering, should he/she have the right? 3. Does the Old Testament prohibit assisted suicide according to your interpretation? If so, where? 4. In physician-assisted suicide, the patient must administer the lethal dosage of medication, whereas in the process of euthanasia, the doctor can give the patient the medication. Do you agree with one method over the other? 5. Even if the method conflicts with Judaism do you think it should be legalized, giving suffering people the option? Laurel Dear Laurel 1) My view, also shared by G-d is that assisted suicide is just
another glorious term for legalised murder. It remains inherently wrong. Helping someone terminate his or her life makes you an accomplice to the crime. 2) My heart goes out to those who suffer to the point where they feel driven to such despair. However, fundamental to Jewish belief is that life is our most sacred possession entrusted to us by G-d. As such, only He serves as Judge and Jury to determine when one’s soul must be returned to its Maker. 3) The Old Testament does prohibit assisted suicide. It’s in the

Legality and morality are mutually exclusive principles. Even as society might opt to legalise it – it will still remain eminently immoral, thus wrong.

Vayeitzei: To the Lighthouse
BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN A lonely and penniless man flees his murderous brother. Ya’akov falls asleep on sacred ground and dreams of angels and ladders. Prior to this evening, Hashem had never appeared to Ya’akov and hadn’t yet spoken with him. Presumably, Ya’akov was wracked with uncertainty as to whether Heaven approved of his questionable behavior in seizing his father’s blessings. Finally, Hashem, positioned atop the ladder, verifies Ya’akov’s conduct and certifies him as the successor of Jewish legacy. Undoubtedly, Ya’akov awakens feeling vindicated and affirmed. Awakening from his night of inspiration, Ya’akov constructs a monument and takes an oath: If Hashem protects him along his tumultuous journey, he vows to revisit this sanctuary and to donate ten percent of his earnings to Hashem. This is a very peculiar response to a magical night of dreams and romance. You would expect Ya’akov to either praise Hashem or to assert some long term vision of future hopes and goals. A night of prophecy should be followed either by a day of worship or of celebration. Instead he takes an oath and makes a financial pledge. This very formal response deflates the energy and the spirit of a dreamy night. Ya’akov responds to a celestial voyage upon heavenly ladders with a legal oath and a business-like contract! Curiously, Ya’akov’s atypical response accomplishes its mission. Over twenty years later, Ya’akov finds himself in a very different stage of life. He is no longer alone, but juggles multiple wives and double-digit children. He is no longer penniless, but has accumulated significant wealth and abundant cattle. He is no longer in hiding, but has been enthusiastically embraced by the local clan and its local culture. Despite his parents, who eagerly await a reunion, and despite the land of destiny which beckons him, he delays his return. Life has
become too entangled with family and with professional demands to just simply “pick up” and leave. He has fallen into the trap which ensnares all our dreams and ideals- life itself! What can possibly shatter this mid-life inertia and launch his return home. Twenty years after cavalcades of angles scaled the Heaven, a lone angel quietly whispers to Ya’akov, summoning him back to Beit el, back to his pledge and back to his former self. The echo of his past reverberates in his sub-conscious. He is steered home by his past self, who re-appears twenty years later, through the voice of an angel. Had Ya’akov relied solely upon his current self and his present judgement, he may never have disentangled from his comfortable reality and broken free from the muddle. He listens to his younger self and takes bold action based on the “voice” from his past. As a teacher, I often wonder about the function of a yeshiva. Undeniably, a yeshiva experience is multi-layered and no one metaphor can fully capture its sweep and its intensity. Acknowledging that a single metaphor alone is insufficient, one way to describe yeshiva is to liken it to a lighthouse. Prior to setting off on a treacherous ocean journey, a captain and his crew sit in the quiet tranquility of the lighthouse, meticulously navigating their future route. The calmness of the lighthouse provides clarity and direction. Weeks later, their ship will be lost at sea, tossed violently by a raging gale storm. Blinded by darkness and battered by sheets of rain, the sailors will have no clue whether a slight turn of the rudder will lead them to safety or directly into the teeth of the storm. To survive, the crew must rely upon the clarity of the lighthouse and upon decisions taken weeks earlier, rather than taking decisions amidst the confusion and chaos of the present. Dazed and bewildered by the storm, they will only escape if they rely upon the wisdom of the lighthouse. One function of yeshiva
Life provides all of us with lighthouse moments - flashes of moral and personal clarity when our “best selves” surface and future decisions become clear. is to provide a lighthouse experience. As a spiritual retreat from life, it can provide moral and religious clarity, enabling bold and principled decisions in the future. Life provides all of us with lighthouse moments - flashes of moral and personal clarity when our “best selves” surface and future decisions become clear. As life unfolds and complication sets in, our clarity becomes clouded and “obvious decisions” become blurred. Our most daring successes occur when we rely upon the clarity of our former selves and not upon the impulses of our current weakened or confused self. This type of decision making – the “lighthouse effect”- takes great imaginative courage. It is always easier and even more rational to base decisions upon our current feelings and in response to our current circumstances. It takes great faith and immense courage to evoke our past wisdoms and our former perceptions and to implement them in a present state, which often seems unaccommodating to those past dreams. Do we allow our former selves to steer us through a present crisis? If a decision seemed so obvious to our former selves, do we possess the conviction to see them through in the present? Do we rely upon the wisdom of the lighthouse? Decision-making demands a delicate

balance between past conviction and current reassessment. Obviously, changing circumstances sometimes demand adjusting our decisions. Life demands flexibility, adaptiveness and realignment. However, there are major life-shaping decisions which can only be achieved by listening to the unencumbered clarity of our former selves as they speak to current self, conveying a message from a simpler stage of life. Our ears listen to the present but our imaginations hearken to the past. The monument at Beit El is Ya’akov’s anchor to his past self and to the clarity of that lonely but clear night. Twenty years earlier, he may have been penniless and scared, but his vision wasn’t confounded by the complications of life. That simpler former self viewed a return journey to Israel as obvious. Twenty years later, amidst the confusion of his present life, Ya’akov trusts the clarity of that past self and courageously pilots his way home. He returns to the lighthouse. Prayer for One and for All BY RABBANIT SALLY MAYER In our Parasha, Yaakov leaves home, running for his life from his brother Esav. He stops on the way to sleep and dreams of the ladder with the angels. The Gemara in Berachot 26b famously teaches that this is when Yaakov established the evening prayer, Arvit, after his father Yitzchak established Mincha in the afternoon, and his grandfather Avraham established Shacharit, the morning prayer. The Gemara there brings another possible source for tefillah, a Rabbinic enactment to parallel the korbanot tamid, the daily sacrifices brought in the Beit HaMikdash each morning and afternoon. What is the meaning behind this debate? Why does it matter if the prayers were established by our forefathers or as a parallel to the service in the Temple? I’d like to suggest that there is a world of difference between the two. What kind of tefillot do we see in the
case of the avot? Avraham prayed early in the morning, “where he had stood before Hashem” (Bereishit 19:27), begging the day before to save Sodom from destruction. In that encounter, Avraham showed both compassion and confidence – caring for the people of Sodom, even those who were not righteous, and boldly negotiating with Hashem over the fate of the city. Yitzchak’s afternoon prayer is called “to converse in the fields in the evening” (Bereishit 34:63), as he goes outside awaiting the arrival of his future bride, still mourning the loss of his mother, and contemplating what life with his new wife will be like. And Yaakov in our story is terrified, fleeing for his life from his murderous brother, seeking Hashem’s protection. Our forefathers are praying from their hearts, in what are personal and individualized requests, and each one even seems to fit the hour of the day: confidence in the morning, contemplation in the afternoon as the sun sets,
Vayeitzei
and fear in the night. This model seems to be telling us whatever we are feeling, we must bring to G-d in our tefillah. The daily sacrifices, on the other hand, are fixed and prescribed: a sheep in the morning and in the afternoon, with the ritual very clearly described in the Torah in Sefer Vayikra. They are brought on behalf of the whole community, not any one individual. And each kohen who performs that service does it the same way, rain or shine, no matter what he is personally feeling. This model teaches us that service of G-d takes a certain preparation, has structure, and is greater than any one of us individually. In the end, we assume that our daily tefillot really stem from both sources – established first by the avot, and then later formalized by the Sages to parallel the korbanot. What emerges is an incredible synthesis. On the one hand, we have fixed times for tefillah and a fixed text as well, reminding us that this is a service of G-d, to

On Yaakov’s journey to Charan, he falls asleep and dreams of a ladder resting on the ground and reaching up to heaven, with angels ascending and descending. G-d is at the top of the ladder, telling Yaakov that he will inherit the Land and that he will have plentiful offspring. be taken seriously, and gently reminding us of what we should be asking for – wisdom, forgiveness, health, rain, the rebuilding of Jerusalem, and more. And at the same time, we must remember where prayer began – when Avraham wanted to argue with Hashem, when Yitzchak wondered what would come next, and when Yaakov begged for protection. This is the personal side of prayer, the moment where we remember to add the name of an individual who is not well, a family having difficulty, or a personal goal with which we need Hashem’s help. This synthesis of the commanded with the spontaneous, the communal with the personal, is what makes tefillah meaningful for us even today.

Although Lavan agrees, when the time comes, he tricks Yaakov, swapping Rachel for Leah. Lavan defends his actions and agrees to let Yaakov marry Rachel a week later, if he works for another seven years. Leah, unlike Rachel, is blessed
Reuven finds some dudaim (jasmine – Rashi) in the field and brings them to his mother Leah. Rachel asks for some of the jasmine. Leah agrees, but only in return for the right to sleep that night with Yaakov. Leah conceives and has a fifth son, Yissachar. This is followed by a sixth, Zevulun. She then has a daughter, Dinah. Rachel finally has a child, Yosef. Yaakov demands that Lavan let him return home after all his years of work. Point to Consider: What is the connection between the birth of Yosef and Yaakov’s demand to leave? (see Rashi to 30:25)
5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 30:28-31:16 Lavan asks Yaakov to stay on and to specify his payment. Yaakov replies that he will keep the plain-looking animals currently in the flock, and any offspring born to them with unusual-patterned skin. Yaakov becomes very prosperous. Lavan’s sons accuse Yaakov of theft. G-d

tells Yaakov to return to Cana’an immediately. Rachel and Leah agree to leave.
6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 31:17-42
Yaakov’s entire family leaves. Lavan finds this out three days later and chases after Yaakov, catching up with him at Mount Gilad. G-d appears to Lavan in a dream, telling him not to harm Yaakov. Lavan criticises Yaakov for fleeing and for stealing his idols. Yaakov denies the latter charge, unaware that Rachel was hiding them. Yaakov also defends his record in Lavan’s house, where he worked tirelessly, despite Lavan’s trickery.
7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 31:43-32:3
Lavan proposes a peace treaty, which Yaakov agrees to, symbolised by a stone monument built by Yaakov’s sons. Lavan and Yaakov part ways.
HAFTARAH
The haftarah, according to the general United Synagogue custom, is taken from the Book of Hoshea (ch. 12-14). The prophet Hoshea rebukes the tribe of Ephraim for their rebelliousness, warning them of the dire consequences. However, they will ultimately return to G-d, Who will welcome them back.

Vayeitzei: Accepting Lies – Over Cholent in Bucharest BY GAVRIEL COHN Last week, I had a few days holiday, so I flew off with some friends on a city-break to Bucharest, the capital of Romania. At the Kosher restaurant over Shabbat, I heard a Torah idea from someone that troubled me. The man, a friendly Israeli lawyer on holiday, quoted our Sages remark that Esav “would entrap his father and deceive him with his words.” Esav, after roaming the desert, hunting and pillaging, would return home and bother his father with the most intricate, halachic questions – as if he lived a life of refinement, adhering punctiliously to Jewish Law. “Father,” he would ask, “how does one take tithes from salt and straw?” Then came this man’s Dvar Torah. He animatedly related his insight to me. In his opinion (unlike Rashi’s), Yitzchak didn’t believe Esav’s questions, he saw right through Esav and knew that he didn’t observe the mitzvot or care about tithing salt. Nevertheless, Yitzchak accepted Esav’s lies as he wanted to sustain his relationship with him. Yitzchak pretended to believe him in order to preserve his bond to his son. Sometimes, this man proposed, we must tolerate
Vayeitzei RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE
THE DUALITY OF JEWISH LIFE
The sidra ends with the words, “And he (Jacob) called the name of that place Machanayim” (Gen. 33:3). The name means “a double camp”. Rashi’s explanation of the name is that two bands of angels met there: the angels of the Diaspora who had accompanied Jacob until now, and the angels of the Holy Land. Some of the other commentators see it as the meeting place of two worlds, the world of the angels and the world of human beings. The Rashi view hints at the duality that makes up Jewish life – the Diaspora and the Land of Israel. Each of the two centres has its own nature and essence. Each one needs the other. David Ben Gurion, for his part, was adamant that Israel was the only place to be a Jew and that the Diaspora meant the kiss of death to Jewish life and tradition. Actually there are places in the Diaspora where Judaism is flourishing and places in Israel where it is threadbare, and the best approach is to see the two centres as partners that can and must fructify each other. The second explanation of the name also asserts that there are two centres, one being heaven and the other the earth. If we look for a lesson for day to day
another person’s lies in order to maintain a connection to them. This idea didn’t sit well with me. How could Yitzchak be said to have a relationship with his son if he had no interface with his son’s real self? Surely being open and transparent is the only way one can maintain a genuine relationship with another person. If Esav was projecting a false image of himself to his father then, by definition, his father only ever saw and connected with that false-self, that fictitious image of pious Esav, and not his true personality. Surely, honesty and openness lie at the heart of any relationship (see further R’ Chaim Kanievsky’s Orchot Yoshar). In this week’s Torah portion, Lavan too is guilty of this two-facedness. He presents himself to Yaakov as a warm relative, caring and concerned for Yaakov’s welfare (“you are my bone and my flesh… ”). Yet beneath this façade, he continuously seeks to trick Yaakov; exploiting, abusing, and deceiving his son-in-law and his daughters for over a decade. This duplicity, I learnt, was a trademark of Nicolae Ceaușescu, the notorious “Communist King” of Romania. At national holidays, he would fill stadiums full of dancers and performers depicting Romania’s great economic successes and force hundreds of thousands of people to applaud him and chant his praises after the shows, theatrical events of truly
immense proportions. In reality, however, behind the pomp and pageantry celebrating his great achievements, he was starving and oppressing his people and stealing his country’s wealth. This deceitfulness is out-rightly disdained by Judaism (as is mistreating others, of course). Instead “one’s inner-self should be like the image which one presents to the world; what a person feels in his heart should be the same as the words on his lips” (Rambam, Hilchot Deot, 2:6). Yet, one could point out that Yaakov too deceives others. He pretended to be Esav, dressing in his heavy coat and in goat’s hides, and announcing to Yitzchak that “I am Esav, your firstborn,” in order to receive his blessings. Later, Yaakov manipulated his flock during their mating season to give birth to spotted and speckled sheep, which would then belong to him (as he had stipulated with Lavan), and eventually he clandestinely fled from Lavan. In fact, some commentators, quoting the Sages, assert that the deceptions that were to plague Yaakov in later life were a consequence of his early trickery of Yitzchak, necessary as it may have been (see, for example, R’ Sacks; Professor Berger; Nechama Leibowitz who all quote Midrashic sources). Yet, perhaps Yaakov’s deceptions were at least somewhat forced upon him. In regards to receiving Yitzchak’s blessings,
human life it is that there is G-d in each place, and there is a constant challenge to bring G-d down to earth to accompany His human creatures on all their paths, with another challenge to elevate human beings and let them taste the blessings of spirituality. In the sages’ view, the Grace After Meals suggests that the unique moment to attain this height is on Shabbat, which is “meein olam ha-ba” – a foretaste of heaven, and heaven is “yom shekullo Shabbat”, the day which is an unending Sabbath.
Why did the children of Laban criticise their cousin Jacob, who had come to live with the family (Gen. 31:1)? Sforno says they were jealous of him. The Torah explains why. It says that he had become a wealthy man and the Laban family accused him of stealing some of their father’s possessions. Laban himself had changed his formerly friendly attitude to Jacob and, according to D’varim 26:5, no longer wanted to be kind to the young man. The passage in D’varim says “Arami Oved Avi”, which can mean, “My father was a wandering Aramean”: but the alternative translation favoured by Rashi fits into the narrative of our sidra, so that the Torah could be saying, “An Aramean (Laban) sought to kill my father”.
HOW MANY STONES?
On his way into exile, Jacob slept with his head on a stone in place of a pillow (Gen. 28:11). How many stones were there? Verse 18 says there was only one. Rashi explains on the basis of the Gemara (Chullin 9b) that the episode started off with a number of stones but then they quarrelled with each other, each one wanting Jacob to choose it to rest his head. So G-d stepped in and merged the stones, putting them together so that there was now only one stone. The story is an example of the Jewish aversion to squabbles and conflicts. Amongst the rabbinic commentators there is an additional view (also noted by Rashi) that the issue was not a substitute pillow but the problem of security; Jacob formed a ring of stones around his head to protect him from wild animals.

BEGINNINGS OF THE SHEMA
A sentence in this week’s Torah reading gives us a lead-in to the Shema. Jacob says, “If I come home safely, then HaShem will be my G-d” (Gen. 28:21). He is proclaiming that if he comes home in peace, that will show that HaShem was with him. The words, “HaShem will be my G-d” are taken up years later when the Shema says, “Hear, O Israel (Jacob’s other name), HaShem is our G-d”. Why is the Shema so important? These are the nine things it says: 1. HaShem is the only reality. 2. We call upon the people of Israel (and mankind) to acclaim Him. 3. He is, and His existence

he was following his mother’s instructions (who was driven to fulfil G-d’s prophecy to her that “the elder will serve the younger”). Regarding Lavan and Esav, Yaakov really had no choice, he had to save his family and safeguard his income against these most deceitful of enemies. Furthermore, perhaps what stands Yaakov apart from Lavan is his genuineness. Despite the tatics he uses, he still displays real emotion (anger, frustration, worry); he shows an openesss, that his inner world, in the words of the Rambam, matched his outside image. As Disraeli once said, “never apologise for showing feeling; when you do so, you apologise for the truth.” Additionally, despite how he was treated, Yaakov worked for Lavan with utmost honesty and “with all his strength.” These Torah portions, I thought over my cholent in Bucharest, are indeed difficult, a knotty web of honesty and deception that all sides are busy weaving (although Yaakov had to fight off his tormentors). Yet still, one thing to my mind was clear: In order to have a relationship with another person, one has to be open with them. I had to tell this man that I disagreed with his Dvar Torah. Fear: False Evidence Appearing Real BY RABBI SHMUEL REICHMAN Have you ever let fear stop you from doing something you really wanted to do? Did fear stop you from taking the next step in your personal growth, your relationships, your career, or your connection with Hashem? While speaking in communities across the world and coaching numerous clients, the number one response I get when I ask people what they are struggling with is something along the lines of “I’m scared.” Fear is one of the biggest dream killers. Some are scared of failing, others are scared of what their friends or family will think, while others are scared of succeeding and not being ready or able to handle the weight of it all. Beyond observing the impact that fear has had on other people’s lives, I know the impact it has had on my own life. For what seemed like forever, I let fear stop me from striving after my dreams and goals, I let it cripple my vision, I let it shackle me to stagnancy. I used to be terrified of public speaking, so I turned down the big invitations; I used to be scared of creating genuine and deep relationships, so I pushed off dating; I used to fear not being good enough for everyone else, so I never shared my thoughts or published my content. Learning about the underlying principles of fear, through both research and experience, allowed me to transform my own life and the lives of countless others. My goal in this article is to share the essential tools and strategies that you can implement to confront and overcome your fears, with the hope that this will help unleash you from a life governed by fear and help launch you towards your true greatness. At the end of our lives, we don’t want to look back and wonder “what if I had learned how to overcome my fears.” So let’s start journeying towards our greatness together.
THE TRUTH ABOUT FEAR
The strange truth about fear is that most fears are not based on reality. On the one hand, there is rational fear of danger, pain, and death, such as the fear of heights when walking along a cliff edge. The fear of falling off the cliff to your death is a rational, healthy, and productive fear. But most fear is a matter of perception, such as the fear of uncertainty or vulnerability, or the fear of taking risks and getting outside of our comfort zone. Fear can also be read as an acronym for “False Evidence Appearing Real” – fear is often a misrepresentation or illusory view of reality. There’s a story of a man who took a roundabout route home from work each day. Why? There was a bulldog that lived on the direct route, and he was terrified of it; every time he walked by that house, the bulldog would bark ferociously, and several times it had even chased him. He was so scared of being bitten by those sharp, angry teeth that he designed his entire life around avoiding that house. After three years of this tiresome routine, it all came to an end one
fateful night. After a long and stressful day, his head still focused on his work, he found himself walking right past the bulldog. One look at the bulldog, and everything became a blur. He ran as fast as he could, but the horrendously loud barking got louder and louder, and he could feel the bulldog gaining ground. Tired and out of breath, panting and wheezing, he bent down and held onto his knees. As he turned around, he saw the bulldog getting ready to pounce. He awaited the painful impact of teeth to skin, beast to prey. But it never came. All he felt was a warm, wet slurping sensation; the “beast” was licking him. And as he looked closer, he nearly passed out. Not only wasn’t the dog bite him; it couldn’t. This ferocious bulldog didn’t have a single tooth. All these years, he was running away from a toothless dog! This is the essence of fear: a toothless bite. We create unimaginably terrifying images in our own mind and then direct our entire lives around the goal of avoiding a bite that has no teeth, no sting. Fear is often an excuse we make to remain inside our limited comfort zone – and when we make excuses for our limitations, we get to keep them. The key is recognizing that fear is a mental construct that we create; it’s an illusion that we generate within ourselves. Once we begin to confront our inner fears, we realize that fear was simply a cage holding us back from our greatness. And as soon as we have this eye-opening revelation, overcoming a lifelong fear that we thought was legitimately holding us, we begin to wonder: “What else am I holding myself back from? What else have I convinced myself I can’t do?”
TWO TYPES OF FEAR
Before developing strategies for overcoming our fears, which we will discuss in the next column, we need to understand the two main categories of fear. Because fear is internally generated, breaking down the two different types of fear can help us see what we personally allow our minds to grasp on to. The first type of fear is outcome-oriented, the second type is process-oriented.
A) OUTCOME-ORIENTED FEARS
In contrast to process-oriented fears, outcome-oriented fears relate to the destination or final result. For example, we may fear that we are not capable of accomplishing our goal; or, we may fear what other people will think of us if we strive after our goal; or, we may fear that even if we accomplish our goal, perhaps our goal wasn’t even worth striving for in the first place. Let’s delve deeper into some of the most common outcome-oriented fears. Identifying and understanding these three specific fears will give you tools for identifying and understanding which outcome-oriented fears you struggle with most. 1- Self-Doubt So many of us struggle with self-doubt. Whenever we consider setting a new goal, entering a new relationship, or beginning a new project, we often question ourselves and whether our vision is possible. Often, the first thought that goes through our mind is, “Who am I kidding? Am I really capable of
this?” We all struggle with self-doubt to some degree; we question ourselves and doubt our capabilities. We’re scared of failure, convincing ourselves that we’re not capable of succeeding, that we don’t have the tools or strength to accomplish our goals. We also get so overwhelmed by all the moving pieces, all the various ingredients that we’ll need to succeed, and all the unknowns. We often don’t have the self-confidence to venture into the unknown, out of our comfort zone, and risk failing along the way to our ultimate greatness. 2- Public Perception In addition to self-doubt, we also worry about our public image. We begin pondering what other people will think of us. What will our friends, parents, our spouse say? If I fail, what will they think of me? If I succeed, what will this mean for our relationship? If I go down this road and give it my all, will this change how they see me? There’s a famous Seinfeld joke: According to most studies, people’s number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. This means that the average person who goes to a funeral would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy. Why are people so terrified of public speaking? A large part of it is self-doubt. We have an overwhelming fear of messing up, forgetting what we prepared and drawing a blank, and feeling foolish. But our deeper fear lies in the very fact that we are going to be judged by everyone. When a person gets up to speak in public, the spotlight is on them, and they are sharing “themselves” with the audience. Everyone in the audience is listening, watching, judging, assessing the person who’s speaking. The moment we step out on the stage and open our mouth, everyone will see who we are, what goes on in our head, our opinions, our thoughts. And for most, the idea of being seen by everyone is unbearable, the thought of being so vulnerable is unthinkable, because it brings our public image, and our inner identity, into question. 3 - Disappointment Beyond the fear of failure and vulnerability, many of us fear disappointment. When we know how much time, energy, and effort it will take to strive after our dreams, we tend to hear this small voice in the back of our mind ask, “Is it really worth it? What if after all of this, I actually succeed, but it’s not as good as I thought? What if I don’t like the outcome? What if the grass isn’t greener on the other side?” This thought can be paralyzing, because the underlying drive behind our journey to greatness is the belief that our destination – our goal, our future – is better than our current state. The moment we begin doubting the quality and value of our dream, we risk destroying it from its very roots. In addition to questioning the value of our dream, we might also question our ability to handle it if we manage to succeed. After all, what if we’re not cut out for greatness? What if the responsibility is too great, and the pressure crushes us? How are we supposed to know if we’re capable of handling it?
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
B) PROCESS-ORIENTED FEARS
In addition to fearing the outcome of our journey, we also tend to fear the journey itself; the day in and day out process or steadily improving ourselves and working towards our goals. The moment we begin thinking about our dreams, dread and doubt begins to crawl in. A voice in the back of our mind pipes up: “So you have a dream? Good for you! But are you sure you’re ready for this journey? Are you sure you’re willing to sacrifice the comforts of your current lifestyle and embark on this quest for greatness?” We begin to realize that to live our dream, we’re going to have to live a very different type of life and give some of the comforts we can’t imagine living without. We naturally turn towards ease and pleasure, while shying away from pain and difficulty, so we fear the arduous and difficult journey that stands between us and our dreams. Deep down, we know that all growth and progress require pain, but we fear what lies ahead if we venture outside of our comfort zone and engage in the difficult, worthwhile journey towards our greatness.
THE GREATEST FEAR OF ALL
Beyond our fears of the outcome and process of the journeys that we choose to undertake, we all have abstract fears of the things we don’t have control over. We fear old age, death, and sickness, realities that we have much less control over. But the greatest fear of all, the one that can powerfully affect our lives in a positive way, is the fear of failing to fulfill our potential. When taken to an extreme, this fear can destabilize and hinder our journey, preventing us from enjoying the journey of self-development. But this fear can also help us overcome our other fears, ensuring that we push ahead and strive passionately towards our ultimate destination. As we can begin to see, fear is not always as bad as we think. Even fear has the potential to be used for the good. Sometimes we need to overcome fear, but sometimes we need to learn how to use it. After identifying and analyzing our various fears in this article, in our next article, we will develop the underlying strategies that will help us overcome our inner fears and achieve the extraordinary. adassa twirled in front of the mirror. She was practising for her audition for this year’s school play. It was her first year in high school and her first chance to be in the school play. Every year girls and their mothers from many other schools came to watch her school’s play because it was always so good. Hadassa dreamed of playing the lead part, Nina. One of the PTA mothers had written the play of Nina and her sisters, who escaped from the evil Nazis and went on to live in a strange secular world. They had to learn how to stay Jewish in these difficult surroundings, with no Jewish family or friends to help. Hadassa absolutely loved the idea and had spent all evening learning Nina’s lines ready for her audition the next day. Lunch break came and instead of eating, Hadassa and her friend Yocheved lined up excitedly waiting for their chance to audition for the play. One by one, each girl was called in. Some came out looking sad and some looking happy. “I’m so nervous,” said Hadassa to Yocheved. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.” Yocheved was about to reply, when Aviva from Year 12 waved Hadassa inside. Hadassa was shaking with nerves, but when she was asked to deliver the lines, she tried to imagine being the real Nina. Being scared but also determined to stay alive and keep Hashem’s mitzvos. “That was excellent.” Aviva said to Hadassa

when she had finished. “I really think the part of Nina will be yours. But please don’t tell anyone as we have to finalise it first. We will put the final list up on the school notice board on Friday.” Hadassa left the room almost skipping with excitement. Yocheved tried to ask her how it had gone, but Hadassa just smiled and ran off. grinned Yocheved. “But it looks like I might get to play one of Nina’s sisters!” “Wow,” said Hadassa. “That’s amazing, I am so happy for you!” Hadassa desperately wanted to share her good news from her audition also, but she decided not to. She could wait a few more days until the list went up and everyone knew. For the next three days, Hadassa could not stop smiling. She was sure that the role

of Nina was hers. She was too excited to pay much attention in class. Even when Mrs Levine talked about the story of Rochel and Leah being swapped on their wedding day, Hadassa found it hard to concentrate. Finally, Friday arrived. The list was up! Hadassa and Yocheved pushed through the crowds of girls to see the confirmation of the parts Aviva had told them were theirs. Hadassa’s heart sank. Next to her, Yocheved started shouting. “Oh my goodness, thank You Hashem, I can’t believe it! I am playing Nina!” Everyone around her started to cheer her. Hadassa couldn’t believe what she was seeing. But there it was in black and white on the notice board. Next to her name was not Nina, but Ziesle, Nina’s younger sister. Hadassa turned away. What should she do? Should she go to Aviva and explain to her the mistake? That somehow she and Yocheved’s parts had got mixed up? She really wanted the part of Nina. She looked over at Yocheved’s glowing face. Yocheved looked so happy at all the attention and cheering she was getting from the rest of the girls there. Hadassa couldn’t take that away from her. It wasn’t Yocheved’s fault that the mix up had occurred. Hadassa remembered what Rochel Imeinu had done for her sister Leah. There was always next year’s play, she thought as she went over to congratulate Yocheved. At least it was only a part in a school play.

In a nutshell Parshat Vayeitzei opens with Yaakov embarking on a very long journey. He was travelling to Charan at the command of his parents. On his way, he passed the Mount Moriah, the place of the future Beit Hamikdash and he felt that this was no place to pass over. He prayed Maariv, lay down, placed stones around him and rested. He dreamt of a ladder, with angels climbing and going down. He hears Hashem talk to him and telling him that He will protect him and be with him, Yaakov awakens, is surprised to discover how awesome the place is and pledges to give of his bounty to Hashem. He continues on to Charan, with his journey miraculously cut short. He lands at a well and asks the locals if they have heard of Lavan. “Well, of course we have”, is their reply, “And here is Rochel, his daughter arriving with the cattle.” He is overwhelmed with happiness to meet his future wife and rolls the large stone off the well. He
accompanies Rochel home to Lavan’s house and is “warmly” welcomed by his uncle. After staying in his uncles house for a while, he is offered to work for pay. He agrees, if the payment is Rochel in marriage. Lavan agrees, Yaakov then gets to work - for SEVEN YEARS. After seven years there is a grand wedding but Lavan tricked Yaakov and gave him Leah instead! When Yaakov raised an objection, Lavan said, “In our place we don’t give the younger sister (Rochel) before the older (Leah).” (Well, Lavan, it would have been perhaps more honest had you told us that earlier…) Lavan then gives Rochel in marriage to Yaakov - in exchange for another seven years of working. He works hard - in all weather conditions. One by one, the members of the first real Jewish “Family” are born - at first only to Leah. The first one is named Reuven - Leah explains this is because Hashem saw she was “hated” (i.e. loved less than Rochel). Then she has Shimon, then Levi and then Yehuda. Rochel

is pained that she has not been blessed with children and gives her maidservant Bilhah, in marriage to Yaakov. She gives birth to Dan and then Naftali. Leah then gives her maidservant Zilpah, who gives birth to Gad and Asher. After that, Leah gives birth to two more boys, Yissachar and Zevulun and a girl, Dinah. Yaakov then works more for Lavan, intending to be paid. Lavan tricks him again and avoids paying him. Lavan and Yaakov agree that a certain type and stripe of sheep will belong to Yaakov, and, Yaakov carries out methods to achieve many of those being born. (Lavan deserved to be treated like this as he was very cunning) This success naturally led to the other children of Lavan resenting Yaakov and it was time for Yaakov to leave Yaakov then takes his wives and family and heads back to the Land of Cana’an. More surprises await him in the next Sidra, when big brother Esav comes out to greet him...

MyBeing Programme:
The programme includes:
The future of science-based personalized preventative care is here. Supercharge your health-being with DNAbased personalisation. For decades, the health industry has concentrated on treating the illness, not preventing it in the first place. But we need to turn this paradigm around. Instead of waiting for things to go wrong in our bodies, we need to actively prevent poor health from happening to begin with. Often, when we think about preventing sickness, we focus on general areas like diet exercise, and possibly supplements – but there can be a lack of precision involved in the decisions we make. The My-being approach to preventative care is different. It aims to remove the ‘fuzzy thinking’ from the health-care process – including misconceptions or
one-size-suits-all treatments – and replace it with specific solutions based on scientific evidence, high-end technology, and DNA-based personalization. The outcome: Supercharged results that are based on your individual needs. Our My-being programme is a 6-month journey to strengthen your body and supercharge your health-being. DNA screening helps us provide personalized solutions that work for you, while a high-tech health app will track your progress and help you implement any lifestyle changes needed. Our tailored programme also includes monthly sessions with an experienced healthcare professional who’ll listen to your concerns and experiences, as well as a combination of three powerful, effective products based on our unique M²CBD formula. We believe that the My-being programme is the new, modern standard for preventative care.
• My-being triple system | Founded on three products designed to solve the key health challenges of modern life – reducing stress, improving the quality of our sleep, and strengthening our immune system. • DNA screening, conducted by one of the world’s leading DNA laboratories. This enables us to personalize the programme for the solutions your body needs. The DNA test will offer insights into the functioning of your immune system, your endocannabinoid system, your metabolism, how you respond to fitness and movement, any mineral and vitamin sensitivities, and how your body reacts to certain drugs. The DNA report will also help analyse your individual responses to a range of health-being challenges – including stress and sleep, mood support, anti-aging, skin health, immune function, and healthy muscles, joints, and bones. • The My-being app | This enables you to track your progress during your journey based on a range of health parameters, and further personalize your programme over the months. Crucially, it’s designed to help you stay active, remain motivated, and not give up on the process midway. • Monthly 1:1 session with a healthcare professional | They will accompany you throughout the whole process, offering human insights into your progress, giving extra support, and helping you make the most of your My-being journey. • M²CBD-based personalized kit | Every month, you’ll receive a set of products, based on our unique M²CBD formula – a powerful combination of functional mushrooms (to strengthen your immune system) and pharmaceuticalgrade, isolated CBD (to target your endocannabinoid system). Each product aims to support a specific area, from mood to sleep to skin health, to help keep you on track.
