OUT & ABOUT Royston Charity Kite Festival

Our cover image this month is inspired by the annual Kite Festival organised by the Rotary Club of Royston and held on the sloping grassland of the Heath. This year’s event promises to be just as successful as previous years with the colour and fun of the kites acting as a backdrop to stalls, competitions, a fun fair, workshops, food & drink and so much more! From 10.30am - 4.30pm there will be attractions and entertainment for all the family. But that is not all, for although a day full of fun is promised the Rotary Club have a more serious aim. It hopes to raise money for the charity Alzheimer’s Research UK whish is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. It specialises in funding world-class, pioneering projects at leading universities to find preventions, treatments and a cure for dementia. Since 1962, the Rotary Club of Royston has been working to serve the local community through events such as this, the May Fayre, Youth Speaks and Youth Makes Music. It also aims to address global problems of disease and poverty. Members are part of the international Rotary movement, with millions of members and thousands of clubs in countries worldwide. The Royston Club has around 40 men and women members, who live or work in the area and who are leaders in their profession or occupation. Meetings take place every Tuesday evening. There may be a speaker on a topic of interest. Other meetings are given over to discussing the business matters of the Club; and every so often, spouses and partners join the proceedings.

So, come rain or shine, gales or zephyr breezes the Heath is the place to be on 3rd August to have some fun in the name of a very good cause.

spotlight on... Fowlmere

Fowlmere is a very picturesque South Cambridgeshire village. It boasts a handsome church and is bursting with history having been visited by Samuel Pepys in 1660 and hosted the RAF during the world wars. An interesting memorial well stands opposite the war memorial.

It still has two traditional pubs - The Chequers (see our review in the Eats, Drinks & Leisure section) and The Queens Head. The Swan now hosts Sachins Indian Restaurant. A bustling farmers market is held once a month (sadly not in August but returning on 13th September). The market is now in its fourth year and thriving. Go along and treat yourself to cakes, cheeses, award winning pies, chutneys, pickles, sauces and beef to name but a few of the delicious delights available. On the outskirts of the village is RSPB Fowlmere which is a beautifully peaceful place to walk and explore. There are dragon flies buzzing, butterflies fluttering and trout to tickle as well as historical watercress beds. On Friday 29th August, for the fourth year the village will play host to Illyria Open Air Touring Theatre. Illyria was created in 1991, and ever since has delighted audiences the length and breadth of the UK, and in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, the United States and Canada. This year they will perform a version of “Robin Hood adapted from the earliest Robin Hood ballads which pre-date Chaucer and has been chosen by the village to be suitable for a family audience.

New Business Launch

Walkies gets a make over!

On the Leash is an animal care company which is dedicated to the welfare of animals. At On the Leash we pride ourselves in trying to change to animal care and the way in which the society views it. We view animals as family members who cannot express their feelings verbally and so we have taken it upon ourselves to try and translate. And so with this in mind we have tailored made products that help us care for your animals as individuals, these are “living documents”, which means they, like your pet are subject to change, and will grow with your pet. We will always treat your pet(s) with the same love, care and respect that you would and no matter what circumstances may arise, and no matter what length of time it has been, we be there for you and your pet. Our contracts are not time or money based. Our services are paid for when you use them and we charge what we need to perform our duties - nothing more. At On the Leash excellence is our priority and this is reflected in our approach to staff as well as our franchises. Although we are a family run business that is not to suggest that family members do not go under the same amount of scrutiny, in fact it’s quite the contrary! We carry this high standard to every task undertaken and every thought process implemented, as there is nothing more personal than the care of a pet. So who are we? We are excited to be introduced to your family. We are the people who are more excited about going on a walk than your dog ever could be. And we are the

people who will never tire of playing with a ball of wool. We are On the Leash and it is our pleasure to make your acquaintance!

Explore Fairlands Valley Park

Stevenage is home to 120 acres of beautiful parkland, and has been voted one of the UK’s leading free visitor attractions. The park supports a varied selection of wildlife and an assortment of wildfowl. An 11 acre sailing lake is used for the centre’s dinghy, kayak, windsurfing and powerboat courses, and the waters used for angling are well stocked. Jogging enthusiasts can keep fit on the Trim Track. There’s a play area and a new aqua playground for little ones. The popular sport of orienteering can also be experienced here, testing map-reading skills and physical fitness. And new for 2014 is the So Challenging high ropes course.

Starlings, thrushes and buntings, including corn buntings, roost on the reserve in the winter. The nature trail is partly wheelchair and pushchair accessible, as are two of the three hides. Why not watch dragonflies buzzing around after their small insect prey, look out for butterflies feeding on flowers and basking in the sunshine or look for fish - including brown trout - in the chalk stream?

Simplicity is the name of the game at the historic Chequers pub in Fowlmere. When new owner Kelly Mathias viewed the pub she immediately fell in love with its quaint charm. Her previous role in a Michelin starred restaurant had fuelled her passion for quality food that she brings to the Chequers. After a three month refurbishment the pub retains the serene atmosphere that first attracted Kelly and the menu reflects her love of simple food, perfectly cooked and presented. We sat in the sun on the large patio looking out over the garden. The Head Chef, Richard Stearn, uses a local fishmonger, who supplies him with extra fresh produce that he loves to cook for you. Such was Kelly’s enthusiasm that we both opted for the fish - the hake was beautifully cooked and served with roasted tomatoes, chorizo and capers while the brill with new potatoes and roast beetroot was well balanced and light. Both dishes were pleasing to the eye and delicious. Special mention must be made of a little treat we shared as a starter. Richard has perfected the art of the scotch egg. A hen’s egg, cooked to gooey perfection, encased in beautifully seasoned pork, coated in bread crumbs and served warm with a pinch of sea salt and a perfect dish of home made piccalilli. You MUST try one. Inside, the pub retains many original features. The main bar boasts a big fireplace (complete with priest hole!) while the restaurant has a mezzanine floor and the original bread oven. This space is ideal for private dining or office parties. The large conservatory provides additional dining space and would also work well for parties and functions. Kelly, Cliff, Annie and the rest of the friendly front of house team look forward to meeting you, so whether you are dropping by for a pint (there are three real ales on tap), a bite to eat in the bar or lunch or dinner for a special occasion, you can be sure of a warm welcome. I liked it so much that I booked us in for lunch for my husband’s birthday! The Chequers, High Street, Fowlmere, SG8 7SR 01763 208558 info@thechequersfowlmere.co.uk thechequersfowlmere.co.uk

dance at the studio

The Studio-CT is a friendly and successful dance school based in Flint Cross just off the A505, providing high quality facilities and a wide range of tuition in all Dance Sport styles for children and adults. The Studio is run by Claire Thompson whose passion for dance at a young age inspired her to want to teach others, to develop their fitness, balance, technique, musicality and confidence in every day life. The Studio was launched in 2004, and since then Claire has been awarded a ‘Coach of the Year Award’ and then after many years of hard work and training, opened her own specialist built dance studio premises to offer many more dance and fitness opportunities to the local communities. The bright and airy dance space of The Studio boasts a 12x7.2 metre sprung maple wood floor, two full length mirrored walls to help dancers perfect their technique, surround sound technology and a softly furnished waiting area, which means that parents can take a break and relax with a cup of tea and a magazine while waiting. The Studio also offers dance training in many local primary schools, and a new branch of classes in Newmarket, Suffolk. The Studio is the only school in East Anglia to have had both guest teaching and performances from ‘celebrity’ dancers, BBC Strictly Come Dancing’s Darren Bennett & Lilia Kopylova; and an exclusive showcase by World Professional Latin Champions – Michael Malitowsi and Joanna Leunis. The timetable offers group and one to one tuition for adults and children, in Ballroom, Latin, Street & Commercial Jazz, Salsa, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Fitness and more. If you’re looking to introduce your child to dancing, join with friends after school, learn for your wedding dance, for social events, competitions, or to keep fit and healthy…The Studio-CT has just the class for you. I think that people can sometimes see massage just as a treat but with the stresses and pressures of today I really feel that it is an important way of maintaining a healthy, balanced life” Rebecca qualified as a Swedish massage therapist VTCT Level 3, in the City of Cambridge, and she is a member of ‘FHT’ the Federation of Holistic Therapists. Sweet Holistics massage therapy is set up in a private studio in Rebecca’s home in Newmarket Road, Royston, Hertfordshire. The room is light, warm and inviting, providing a welcoming and tranquil environment. Rebecca combines her high level of practice of Swedish massage with her career as a pastry chef, offering a service of wedding and celebration cakes as part of an extensive portfolio of sweet treats. She also gives out loyalty cards to her massage clients that include discounts on treatments and boxed cupcakes for the client to enjoy after their treatment. This is how “Sweet” Holistics got its name. Sweet Holistics Massage Therapy, www.sweetholistics.co.uk 07771 358363, info@sweetholistics.co.uk

pupils experience the environment

“My best week in school…ever” is how one child described his experience during a week discovering their local environment at Barrington Primary School. On Friday 4th July parents, villagers and friends packed into the school hall to hear about the children’s findings. They were delighted with a movie made by the children and artistic presentations on dinosaur fossils found locally, the river and its water vole population, the future of the cement works site and exploring their local woodland creatively. The climate histories team (Social Anthropology) at the University of Cambridge had linked up with local artist/teachers Nick Juett and Caroline Wendling to provide a week of activities at the school including visits to an “eco” house and a sustainable farm where the compostable toilets and wind turbine proved very interesting.

ART exhibition praised

“The high quality and great variety of students’ work” was commented on by visitors to this year’s annual Art Exhibition at Meridian School in Garden Walk. Parents, staff and students gathered to celebrate the work which had been achieved at GCSE AS and A Level. The evening was also enlivened by the School’s musicians, with songs and instrumental pieces performed throughout the evening. There are a wide range of skills covered at GCSE and A-Level, including Ceramics, Printmaking, Textiles, Acrylic, Oil and Watercolour painting, Mixed Media and Photography.
