GIVE BLOOD!

Summer comes to an end but the need for blood is constant. In September, as the summer holidays end, children head back to school and people return to work. NHS Blood and Transplant is urging people in the local area to make sure giving blood is part of their routine. NHS Blood and Transplant is asking blood donors new and old to make an appointment to donate blood to help keep stocks healthy throughout the autumn months. Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced, thanks to improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales. Next Session: Fri 5th September 1-315pm & 4.30-7pm Coombes Community Centre, Burns Road Visit blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.

GOODNIGHT, SLEEPTIGHT!

Sleeptember is a new, exciting initiative from The Sleep Council running throughout September to remind everyone of the healthy benefits of a good night’s sleep. Like proper nutrition and exercise, sleep fulfils a vital role in keeping us healthy and happy. We need a good night’s sleep to ensure we’re feeling fit, thinking sharply and generally to give us the appetite and enthusiasm to make the most of everyday living. If you’re a poor sleeper then why not set yourselves the challenge of changing your habits for the whole month of September. Below are five simple steps you can take this month to try and improve your sleep: 1. Create the ideal sleep environment: You need the right environment to get a good night’s sleep and that means a bedroom that’s cool, quiet and dark. 2. Get rid of the gadgets: Smart phones, laptops, TVs, radios and games consoles all have a significant effect on our sleeping habits, making it difficult to switch off and wind down. Exposure to even the weakest glow at night – eg, the notification light flashing on your mobile next to your bed – can unconsciously play havoc with your body’s circadian rhythms, keeping you alert when you should be sleepy. 3. Invest in a new bed: It’s the foundation of good sleep. Research shows that sleeping on an uncomfortable bed could rob you of up to an hour’s sleep – yet the deterioration may be so gradual and invisible you don’t make the connection. Think about replacing your bed after about seven years. 4. Routine: Try to stick to regular bedtime hours – going to bed and getting up at roughly the same every day helps to program the body to sleep better. Plus your body will love you for it. 5. Wind down: Try to learn relax before bedtime. Meditation is a great tool for relaxing both body and mind – as is having a warm bath, listening to some quiet music, yoga etc. If you start to worry when you get into bed, try writing down what’s niggling you or things you need to tackle. So, why not put it to these tips to the test and see if you can improve your sleep in September....zzzzzzzzzz! www.perfectsleepenvironment.org.uk www.facebook.com/TheSleep

KEEP A CHECK ON MOLES

Summer is nearly over and we start thinking about packing our garden equipment away for the Winter, carefully checking to see if has been damaged by the sun or other elements. But how many of you will ROYSTON SUN SAFETY be checking yourselves to see if you have also CAMPAIGNER been damaged by the sun? KERRI WILLMOTT It’s easy to think that now the tan is fading that Summer has left us, and we don’t think about the damage that the one afternoon of sitting on the Heath in full sunlight has caused. We start dressing in long sleeves and snuggling into onesies for the evening. Before we pack ourselves away for Winter we should be giving our skin an MOT and looking for anything that has changed. Skin Cancer incidences are increasing at an alarming rate and Melanoma, the kind that spreads to your internal organs, is claiming more victims than ever. It is on course to be the biggest killer Cancer of 15 – 34 year olds, and at least 60% of those who will die today from it could have prevented it. Let’s assume you haven’t protected yourself this Summer. You and your children haven’t worn suncream everyday because suncream is only for going on holiday (when we have similar UV levels (sun strength) to Spain). You haven’t worn a hat, covered your shoulders or sought shade at lunchtime. Aside from aging yourself and your skin feeling a little drier, possibly a bit more wrinkly, what else could have happened? What else should you be looking for? My Melanoma started as a little pimple that rapidly grew. 2.1mm into my skin. Not much but it left me with a 9cm² skin graft on my face and the anxiety of knowing it could pop up again anywhere on or in my body at any time. Any change in a mole, skin tag, spot or freckle should be investigated as should any new mole or growth, as advised by MelanomaUK, Cancer Research and British Skin Foundation. I take twenty minutes a month going over my skin, checking for any changes. If you can’t see properly, get your partner to help, your hairdresser to check your scalp, your masseuse to check your back. Don’t forget to check your eyes, mouth and areas “where the sun doesn’t shine”. There are plenty of cases of Mucosal Melanoma that affect us ladies, especially if you have been naked on a salon sunbed. Don’t take your time to go to the doctor, Melanoma is fast and spreads quickly. Once it has ventured past your skin it will take over your body and at the moment there is no cure, only methods that will prolong your life. It will only take ten minutes of your doctor’s time, and you will be seen within two weeks by a Dermatologist if necessary. Don’t forget to check your children, most damage is done in early years and will sit dormant ready to pop up at a later date. Children should never be tanned, the best that happens when they are is that they will look older than they are, earlier. We do not have a VitaminD deficiency in this country. A daily multi-vitamin will give them and you all that is needed if you do not have a varied diet. More information can be found on the MelanomaUK website as well as Cancer Research and British Skin Foundation, and while you are reminiscing of the heat and thinking about your next holiday please do not be tempted to use an artificial sunbed, no good will come of it – but that’s an article for another issue!

THE FRANK LETTS BLIND FELLOWSHIP

The Frank Letts Blind Fellowship of Royston was formed in 1994 and continues to be a successful and friendly club for the blind and partially sighted people of Royston and the surrounding district. The Club meets from 11.30am to 3pm on the second Tuesday of every month at the Heath Sports Centre, Therfield Heath, Royston. Members are served tea or coffee on arrival, a two-course meal and tea or coffee after. Following this we have a raffle (items can be brought by members) and a speaker, quiz or other entertainment. Twice a year we have an outing instead to a garden centre and a restaurant. Members are asked to contribute to the cost of this. The fellowship is an opportunity to meet people and to enjoy varied company. Services such as the Community Police, Fire Brigade and Herts Association for the Blind also make visits to keep members up to date with security, safety and aids for the visually impaired. Transport is available to bring members to the meetings. This is arranged with Royston & District Community Transport and paid for by the Fellowship, though a donation box is circulated if anyone wishes to contribute. The Fellowship now has vacancies for members who are visually impaired and for their carers at our friendly and happy club and is also seeking new Committee members to help at the lunch meeting, assisting with organising the meeting and greeting members. What’s The Alternative: Reflexology

Having a Reflexology Treatment

Origins and Principles

Reflexology was practised in several ancient cultures, but it was developed into its modern form by an American, Eunice Ingham, who based her method on Dr. William Fitzgerald’s ‘zone therapy’. Reflexology is based on the belief that various points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body, forming a ‘body map’ that can be used to treat the whole body; points corresponding to problem areas will feel tender when massaged. Most practitioners work on the feet with the right foot corresponding to the right side of the body and the left foot corresponding to the left side. Reflexology is often used to treat stress, insomnia, headaches and hormonal or digestive problems’. North Herts Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), an independent charity, provides free advice and information to help North Hertfordshire and South Cambridgeshire residents resolve their money, legal and consumer issues. Drop-in assessment is available at the CAB offices in Royston Town Hall on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9.30 – 12noon. Thanks to funding from the South Cambridgeshire District Council, North Herts CAB are also able to offer twice monthly drop-in advice sessions at the Melbourn Community Hub, where a trained adviser will be available, on the first Monday and third Tuesday of every month from 9.30 to 11.30am. Additionally, a case worker for South Cambridgeshire residents is now available via the Big Lottery Fund’s South Cambridgeshire Advice Network (SCAN). If you live in South Cambridgeshire you can contact Sharon on 01462 688008 or email BLFworker@ nhdistrictcab.cabnet.org.uk for a benefits, debt or housing advice appointment Aims • To provide the advice people need for the problems they face. • To improve the policies and practices that affect people’s lives. Principles The Citizens Advice service provides free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities. We value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination. What happens when you get to the bureau? You’ll be offered a short session with an assessor, who will identify the most appropriate way to help you. This could be giving you the information you need to solve your problem yourself. Or it could be making an appointment to discuss your problem further – in person, by phone or on email. Sometimes we might direct you to a different organisation that is better placed to help. For the latest information please visit www. northhertscab.org.uk where you are also invited to complete the ‘Advice Services’ questionnaire. Linda Albert, of North Herts CAB said: “We want to canvass views from individuals on the future of our advice services and how we might target our funds more effectively in order to help as many people as possible” www.northhertscab.org.uk

www.thelistingmagazine.co.uk • 01763 248447 • 8

A treatment lasts around 45 minutes. On the first visit, the reflexologist will discuss the patient’s medical history. Patients usually sit in a reclining chair for treatment, and the reflexologist may apply cream or powder before massaging their feet with firm, precise motions using the side and end of the thumb and sometimes the fingers. It may feel a little uncomfortable but should not cause pain. Hand reflexology is equally effective but rarely used in the UK. Reflexologists usually work on one foot or hand at a time, but massage both hands/feet during the treatment.

Efficacy and Evidence

Reflexology is used to complement, not replace, conventional medicine but there is growing evidence that it may help with stress, pain, fatigue and depression. Research is not yet conclusive but these apparent benefits make reflexology a popular treatment for cancer symptoms. By Alison Runham
