COMMUNITY

WELCOME To the September issue of The Listing Royston comes alive at the end of September when the Royston Arts Festival takes over the town, bringing comedy, dance, music and drama. You can take part in workshops such as drawing manga cartoons and cake decorating, or why not learn to facepaint? If you prefer to sit back and be entertained, watch Mrs Brown’s Boys at Royston Picture Palace, the CADS play the Fosdyke Saga or live stand-up comedy. Multi-award winning trumpeter Alison Balsom gives a talk on her career and life, followed by a Q and A session at Greneway School, where her passion for music began. Check out the full programme on our centre pages, pick up a copy of the printed programme or visit www.roystonartsfestival.org for full details of how you can get involved. Also this month, visit Hertfordshire Open Studios, with local studios open in Barkway, Steeple Morden, Royston and Buntingford. Our arts-theme continues with news of Stacey Leigh Ross’ No Place Like Home exhibition which features original works inspired by the three places she calls home - Trinidad, London and Royston. Curwen’s Gallery open their doors again with a new exhibition from photographers Kate and Martin Bailey, and woodturning by Rowland Penfold. And if art just isn’t your thing... this month we also focus on Royston Rugby Club and South Cambridgeshire villages Guilden and Steeple Morden.

There’s something for everyone this September, enjoy! With best wishes

OUT & ABOUT Royston Rugby Club

TEAMWORK, RESPECT, ENJOYMENT, DISCIPLINE, SPORTSMANSHIP These are the values that make one of the toughest games on earth, one of the greatest games on earth! Rugby is an excellent sport for children of all ages and is one of the few sports where children of both sexes with mixed abilities can participate in competitive team sports on equal basis. At Royston RUFC, young recruits from Under 5 through Under 12 play under the Mini Rugby code. The game, its rules and skill requirements develop in line with the age group and capabilities of the youngsters ensuring fun, safety and learning at the right pace for all. During School Years 1, 2, 3 the non-contact form of the game (Tag Rugby) is played. Children are placed rigorously in their year groups to ensure no-one is over-awed by the presence of older children. The mini and junior sections are going from strength to strength with the club offering coaching and development, Matches are played against many other local clubs and tournaments are entered through the season. The first team play in the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Division 1 league which offers players a good challenge and test of their rugby skills. Our first team play to a high standard and training for them is not for the fainthearted! As well as skills training, team building and strength & conditioning coaching is offered to make sure we play to our best ability. We have first and second senior teams, vets,

minis and juniors, touch rugby and the odd Old Boys game to reunite with old friends and make new ones! There are plenty of options - if you don’t like the idea of the contact element, then Touch Rugby is an option. Many of our coaches are trained and licensed by the RFU to coach rugby in all age groups, from 4 years old to adult rugby. The coaching team keep up to date by attending regular CPD courses on developments within the game and our association with the Saracens Premiership club allows coaches to join their elite coach development program so we continue to offer all our players what they need to enjoy and develop their rugby. Our base on Royston Heath offers us excellent facilities and plenty of space for playing and social events - or just a sneaky pint of Doombar after training! The club offers senior training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, touch rugby on Wednesday evenings, youth and mini training on Sunday mornings and more! We would love to talk to you about our local club and all it offers so please don’t hesitate to check us out. Give us a call if you would like to find out more on any aspect of rugby or look at the web site:

ROYSIA WOMEN’S CLUB

In July we held fund raising events in aid of our charity, Headway, which included a Tombola at our Social evening and a Coffee Morning. This charity provides specialist services and support to people with an acquired brain injury and their families. At our speaker meeting, we had a “Flower Arranging” demonstration given by Maria Nightingale ending up raffling off her many lovely flower arrangements. At our last meeting of the Summer programme we had a light hearted ‘Day at the Seaside’ themed Social with wonderful decorations, a fish and chip supper and taxing quizzes! Although we have a break during August, one Sunday, members enjoyed a lovely coach trip to Rochester spending the day there at leisure. We begin our Autumn Programme in September with a Social, catching up after the Summer holidays! The following week our speaker will be Andy Malcolm talking about “The True Price of Fish and Chips”. At the next meeting Richard Furnival-Jones will be telling us about ‘The Palace of Knightsbridge’, giving us a behind the scenes look at Harrods. Towards the end of September we shall also be making a visit by coach to the Flower Festival in St Alban’s Cathedral. We are a thriving club and new members are always welcome. Why not join one of our meetings held in the Town Hall on Monday evenings which start at 8pm. Speaker meetings end at 10pm and Social Evenings at 9.30pm. For further details about Roysia Women’s Club please contact Wendy Pearce 01763-231381 or Mavis Ingle 01763-222524 or email: roysia10@yahoo.co.uk. TLpolead92x130N

Town Crier SEPTEMBER 2014

Keeping Royston residents in touch with their local council

Tackling High St problems WE promised in our March issue to keep you up to date on our work taking forward issues identified in the Town Centre Tidy Up in September. With the help of North Herts District and Herts County councillors, we are hoping to achieve some major pavement cleaning and street furniture renovations in the near future. There will also be some extensive repair and maintenance work done on the road and pavements in the High Street. Cigarette disposal bins are planned to be installed in the High Street. We are working with the waste and recycling service manager to ensure that the High Street area is being cleaned according to the contract. We hope this demonstrates that action is being taken, and it will be an ongoing process. We are fully committed to improving the High Street and other areas in Royston.

‘We have a vibrant town’ Victoria Hulstrom-Allen Mayor of Royston THE first thing to strike me since taking up office as Mayor of Royston is that we have a really active community. Sometimes is is all too easy to become swept up in the daily routines of life and not take stock of what is around us. Royston truly does have a vibrant scene. I have had the pleasure of attending such a wide variety of events: such as the Brownies 100th birthday, the Royston in Blue charity event, the marvellous Filipino Barrio Fiesta, Fun in the Park and Johnson Matthey’s Queen’s Award presentation. The saying “there’s nothing to do” should not be applied to Royston. I look forward to continuing to represent the town over the coming year and hope to meet as many of you as possible.

ROYSTON TOWN COUNCIL - ANNUAL REPORT THE annual town meeting was held in March when the Mayor presented Community Civic Awards and Community Trust Fund Awards.

Talking about my generation A MORNING of activities is being organised for the young at heart. The town council and the Royston & District Museum are working together as part of Silver Sunday: Celebrating Older People. The event is being sponsored by Johnson Matthey. The activities will be taking place in the museum on Sunday 5 October (10am 12 noon). They will include an opportunity to share memories in the museum’s My Generation, Baby project, to have a session on the The Crow printing press and remember the music and the events of the not too distant past. Refreshments will be available and the event is FREE.

Deputy town clerk retires

Elected members of the Town Council, North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) and Hertfordshire County Council gave reported on activities during the past year. Details of their reports can be found in the minutes of the meeting at www.roystontowncouncil.gov.uk. The Town Council is responsible for the Town Hall, Market Hill Rooms, Green Walk and Stile Plantations, the War Memorial, Royston Cave, Green Street allotments, the Royston & District Museum and Art

The Town Council is also the sole trustee for the Leete Charity Trust, which provides grants towards further education for students who live or attend school in Royston. After thorough evaluation of income and expenditure, the town council increased the Tax Precept for 2014-2015 from £258,600 to £ 272,900 - which equals to an increase in tax for a Band D property by £2.44 per year. Copies of the annual report are available at the Town Hall offices or can be downloaded from the council's website.

SPOTLIGHT ON... GUILDEN MORDEN AND STEEPLE MORDEN

Referenced in the Domesday Book as ‘Morden’ and ‘the other Morden’, Guilden Morden and Steeple Morden are pretty villages set on the border of South Cambridgeshire. Steeple Morden was known in the early 13th century as ‘South Morden’, whilst Guilden means Golden. There’s plenty going on in this area - find out more about what’s happening in September.

Guilden Morden

Steeple Morden

The Guilden Morden History Group Project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and sponsored by Guilden Morden Parish Council and Fusion Creative Marketing Ltd have developed a 1940’s Village Trial. From Saturday13th September, the day of the September Show in Guilden Morden, and for the following two weeks, you are invited to enter the Village Trial Challenge for the chance of winning the prize draw. Leaflets with a map of the trail are available through September from Guilden Groceries. The September Show takes place on the Recreation Ground, starting with the Children’s Grand Parade. Expect to see classic cars, motor bikes, miniature railway and many more stalls and sideshows. The theme this year is Wheels, and this theme is also reflected in some of the produce classes for the traditional produce show. Children can enter such classes as make an edible vehicle or decorate a wheel biscuit. Of course there are many more traditional classes such as homegrown produce, baking and preserves. Entries are accepted between 9.30 and 11.30am on the day, more information on the village website. You are invited to find out what it was like living in Guilden Morden during the 1940’s by visiting an Exhibition to be held in the Schoolroom of the Congregational Church, Pound Green, Guilden Morden on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September from 11am to 5 pm. The exhibition will feature photographs, recorded memories, maps, memorabilia, music and much much more. What’s more, entry is free and refreshments will be served.

Steeple Morden is an incredibly sociable and friendly parish, with very active tennis, cricket, football and bowls clubs; not to mention the ‘Morden Players’- a local Amateur Dramatics Group who never fail to surprise with their quirky sell out performances. The Players chose to donate part of the proceeds to local charity Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire from their recent performance, Little Red Riding Hoodie. The Morden Players’ next production, which will be a locally written comedy, will be on 29th, 30th and 31st October 2014. New members are always welcome. The village is home to the Parish Church of SS Peter & Paul, and the Waggon and Horses is the only remaining public house of the eight that survived into the 1950s. The villagers of Steeple Morden have lived through some historic events; construction of Steeple Morden Airfield started in 1939, after three farmers were told that their land was to be requisitioned by the Air Ministry. In July 1943, the United States 355th Fighter Group arrived in Steeple Morden and during their stay they received a unit citation for their extraordinary heroism. They became known as the ‘Steeple Morden Strafers.’ Little remains of the airfield today except a few buildings, a part of the main runway and the perimeter track. Although the sound of Wellington Bombers and Mustangs Fighters has disappeared, lasting friendships with those across the pond remain. Steeple Morden’s annual village fund raiser, The Harvest Fair, will be held on Saturday 20th September from 12 to 4.30pm. Planning is in its final stages with a ‘Glen Miller’ style big band to start the day, followed by the Police Firearms and Dog team. Competitive parents will be able to take part in the Rodeo Bull competitions whilst those who desire a more relaxing afternoon can sample the beer and Pimms tent, the BBQ and cake stalls. Old favourites include of course, the Horticultural Show, the Vintage Car collection, a car boot sale, bouncy castle, Scruffs Dog show and lots of surprises for all the family. Steeple Morden is also the home of local artist Anna Pye’s Studio. Anna creates original hand pulled prints & screen printed home textiles, inspired by countryside & wildlife, as well as handmade books & cards. She also runs lino printing workshops. Anna is opening her Sudio to visitors on Saturday and Sundays between 6th - 28th September and at other times by appointment (see our feature on Hertfordshire Open Studios) - another great reason to visit the village in September!

LOCAL ARTISTS ON SHOW

One of the biggest art exhibitions in Royston is nearly here. The Royston Arts Society’s annual Autumn Exhibition at Royston Town Hall is always a date for your diary – this year those dates are September 27th to 28th 2014. The Society’s contribution to the Royston Arts Festival is back this year with an astounding variety of art. Your options are endless: framed and unframed original art, prints, greeting cards, portraits, landscapes, abstracts, mixed media, watercolours, acrylics, oils, pen and ink, pastels, line drawings and much more will be on sale at very affordable prices. Even better it’s all by local artists. You will be absolutely spoiled for choice! The Royston Arts Society was established in 1978 and over the years it has developed a reputation for high quality art in North Hertfordshire. Its key purpose is to provide a creative community experience, so you’d be in the right place whether you’re there to buy or just to look. Maybe we’ll see you there...

The Royston Arts Society’s Autumn Exhibition. 27th September 10am – 5pm & 28th September 11am -4pm at Royston Town Hall, Melbourn St, Royston, SG8 7DA. Visit www.roystonartsoc.org.uk or email enquiries@roystonartsoc.org.uk for more info.

AN OFFAL-Y GOOD SHOW!

It’s not often that a drama group publicises its next show by announcing that “It’s a load of tripe!” but that’s just how Corvus Amateur Drama Society (CADS) is promoting its latest offering. Those with long memories, a droll sense of humour, and possibly left-wing leanings may remember the much loved cartoon strip The Fosdyke Saga written and drawn by the great Bill Tidy which appeared in the Daily Mirror in the 1970s and ‘80s. Described as “a classic tale of struggle, power, personalities and tripe”, the strip was a parody of John Galsworthy’s classic novel series The Forsyte Saga, and centred around the fortunes of the eponymous family whose rise to fortune in the Lancashire tripe trade were constantly being thwarted by the evil Roger, son of the late tripe king, Ben Ditchley, who disinherited him after he seduced the woman his father intended to wed. The cartoon strip was axed in 1985 when Robert Maxwell took over the Mirror (according to Bill “because he didn’t like it”!), but not before Alan Plater had adapted it as a stage show and it is this show that CADS is presenting this September as part of the 2014 Royston Arts Festival. Best described as half musical, half pantomime and half slapstick farce, the story sees the Fosdyke family rise from humble beginnings at the turn of the 20th century to fame and fortune as Lancashire’s foremost tripe manufacturers and takes in coal strikes, the Suffrage movement, and pretty much the whole of World War One. The group achieved a significant coup when faced with the need to produce some artwork for publicity purposes: they decided to approached Bill Tidy himself and the cartoonist was reportedly so delighted that the show was being given an airing that he generously agreed to donate two completely original cartoons in exchange for frontrow tickets! One of these is reproduced here. The Fosdyke Saga, 7.30 pm, Thursday 25th, Friday 26th and Saturday 27th September at Meridian School. Tickets £10 each (or £5 for children and students) from www.cadsroyston.org.uk or by ringing the CADS box office on 07925 674967.

DEFINITELY NOT FOR KIDS! Two stand up comics with their roots in kids’ TV promise to give a very alternative performance at this year’s Royston Arts Festival on 20 September at the Picture Palace.

Best known for his work presenting on CBBC, Iain Stirling also has an alternative career delivering adult-orientated jokes at stand-up clubs all around the country. He has just finished a run of stand-up shows at the Edinburgh Fringe HOWARD READ and is a has been dubbed one of Scotland’s ‘Hottest Newcomers’ by The Scotsman. He’s also appeared on Russell Howard’s ‘Good News’ and been described by Time Out as a ‘Hugely talented rising star’. Howard Read (known to parents everywhere as ‘Big Howard’) hails from Letchworth and for the festival he’s been let out on his own (away from his animated TV sidekick).

This September, Royston-based artist, Stacey Leigh Ross is taking us home with her… to Trinidad, London & Royston – the three places she calls home. No Place Like Home features framed and unframed paintings, greeting cards and hand-painted lamp shades dedicated to each ‘home’. Stacey has created an astounding range of new work including: Matisse inspired cutouts, Royston Cave carvings on canvas, her signature Life Story Art mixed media pieces, semi-abstract landscapes, curvy women, historical art, and abstract mood pieces. COMMUNITY

THE FRANK LETTS BLIND FELLOWSHIP OF ROYSTON

The Frank Letts Blind Fellowship of Royston was formed in 1994 and continues to be a successful and friendly club for the blind and partially sighted people of Royston and the surrounding district. The Club meets from 11.30am to 3pm on the second Tuesday of every month at the Heath Sports Centre, Therfield Heath, Royston. Members are served tea or coffee on arrival, a two-course meal and tea or coffee after. Following this we have a raffle (items can be brought by members) and a speaker, quiz or other entertainment. Twice a year we have an outing instead to a garden centre and a restaurant. Members are asked to contribute to the cost of this. The fellowship is an opportunity to meet people and to enjoy varied company. Services such as the Community Police, Fire Brigade and Herts Association for the Blind also make visits to keep members up to date with security, safety and aids for the visually impaired. Transport is available to bring members to the meetings. This is arranged with Royston & District Community Transport and paid for by the Fellowship, though a donation box is circulated if anyone wishes to contribute. The Fellowship now has vacancies for members who are visually impaired and for their carers at our friendly and happy club and is also seeking new Committee members to help at the lunch meeting, assisting with organising the meeting and greeting members.

GIVE BLOOD!

Summer comes to an end but the need for blood is constant. In September, as the summer holidays end, children head back to school and people return to work. NHS Blood and Transplant is urging people in the local area to make sure giving blood is part of their routine. NHS Blood and Transplant is asking blood donors new and old to make an appointment to donate blood to help keep stocks healthy throughout the autumn months. Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced, thanks to improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales.

Next Session: Fri 5th September 1-315pm & 4.30-7pm Coombes Community Centre, Burns Road Visit blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.

GOODNIGHT, SLEEPTIGHT!

Sleeptember is a new, exciting initiative from The Sleep Council running throughout September to remind everyone of the healthy benefits of a good night’s sleep. Like proper nutrition and exercise, sleep fulfils a vital role in keeping us healthy and happy. We need a good night’s sleep to ensure we’re feeling fit, thinking sharply and generally to give us the appetite and enthusiasm to make the most of everyday living. If you’re a poor sleeper then why not set yourselves the challenge of changing your habits for the whole month of September. Below are five simple steps you can take this month to try and improve your sleep: 1. Create the ideal sleep environment: You need the right environment to get a good night’s sleep and that means a bedroom that’s cool, quiet and dark. 2. Get rid of the gadgets: Smart phones, laptops, TVs, radios and games consoles all have a significant effect on our sleeping habits, making it difficult to switch off and wind down. Exposure to even the weakest glow at night – eg, the notification light flashing on your mobile next to your bed – can unconsciously play havoc with your body’s circadian rhythms, keeping you alert when you should be sleepy. 3. Invest in a new bed: It’s the foundation of good sleep. Research shows that sleeping on an uncomfortable bed could rob you of up to an hour’s sleep – yet the deterioration may be so gradual and invisible you don’t make the connection. Think about replacing your bed after about seven years. 4. Routine: Try to stick to regular bedtime hours – going to bed and getting up at roughly the same every day helps to program the body to sleep better. Plus your body will love you for it. 5. Wind down: Try to learn relax before bedtime. Meditation is a great tool for relaxing both body and mind – as is having a warm bath, listening to some quiet music, yoga etc. If you start to worry when you get into bed, try writing down what’s niggling you or things you need to tackle. So, why not put it to these tips to the test and see if you can improve your sleep in September....zzzzzzzzzz! www.perfectsleepenvironment.org.uk www.facebook.com/TheSleep

KEEP A CHECK ON MOLES

Summer is nearly over and we start thinking about packing our garden equipment away for the Winter, carefully checking to see if has been damaged by the sun or other elements. But how many of you will ROYSTON SUN SAFETY be checking yourselves to see if you have also CAMPAIGNER been damaged by the sun? KERRI WILLMOTT It’s easy to think that now the tan is fading that Summer has left us, and we don’t think about the damage that the one afternoon of sitting on the Heath in full sunlight has caused. We start dressing in long sleeves and snuggling into onesies for the evening. Before we pack ourselves away for Winter we should be giving our skin an MOT and looking for anything that has changed. Skin Cancer incidences are increasing at an alarming rate and Melanoma, the kind that spreads to your internal organs, is claiming more victims than ever. It is on course to be the biggest killer Cancer of 15 – 34 year olds, and at least 60% of those who will die today from it could have prevented it. Let’s assume you haven’t protected yourself this Summer. You and your children haven’t worn suncream everyday because suncream is only for going on holiday (when we have similar UV levels (sun strength) to Spain). You haven’t worn a hat, covered your shoulders or sought shade at lunchtime. Aside from aging yourself and your skin feeling a little drier, possibly a bit more wrinkly, what else could have happened? What else should you be looking for? My Melanoma started as a little pimple that rapidly grew. 2.1mm into my skin. Not much but it left me with a 9cm² skin graft on my face and the anxiety of knowing it could pop up again anywhere on or in my body at any time. Any change in a mole, skin tag, spot or freckle should be investigated as should any new mole or growth, as advised by MelanomaUK, Cancer Research and British Skin Foundation. I take twenty minutes a month going over my skin, checking for any changes. If you can’t see properly, get your partner to help, your hairdresser to check your scalp, your masseuse to check your back. Don’t forget to check your eyes, mouth and areas “where the sun doesn’t shine”. There are plenty of cases of Mucosal Melanoma that affect us ladies, especially if you have been naked on a salon sunbed. Don’t take your time to go to the doctor, Melanoma is fast and spreads quickly. Once it has ventured past your skin it will take over your body and at the moment there is no cure, only methods that will prolong your life. It will only take ten minutes of your doctor’s time, and you will be seen within two weeks by a Dermatologist if necessary. Don’t forget to check your children, most damage is done in early years and will sit dormant ready to pop up at a later date. Children should never be tanned, the best that happens when they are is that they will look older than they are, earlier. We do not have a VitaminD deficiency in this country. A daily multi-vitamin will give them and you all that is needed if you do not have a varied diet. More information can be found on the MelanomaUK website as well as Cancer Research and British Skin Foundation, and while you are reminiscing of the heat and thinking about your next holiday please do not be tempted to use an artificial sunbed, no good will come of it – but that’s an article for another issue!

NEW CITIZENS ADVICE SESSIONS IN SOUTH CAMBRIDGESHIRE North Herts Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), an independent charity, provides free advice and information to help North Hertfordshire and South Cambridgeshire residents resolve their money, legal and consumer issues. Drop-in assessment is available at the CAB offices in Royston Town Hall on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9.30 – 12noon. Thanks to funding from the South Cambridgeshire District Council, North Herts CAB are also able to offer twice monthly dropin advice sessions at the Melbourn Community Hub, where a trained adviser will be available, on the first Monday and third Tuesday of every month from 9.30 to 11.30am. Additionally, a case worker for South Cambridgeshire residents is now available via the Big Lottery Fund’s South Cambridgeshire Advice Network (SCAN). If you live in South Cambridgeshire you can contact Sharon on 01462 688008 or email BLFworker@nhdistrictcab. cabnet.org.uk for a benefits, debt or housing advice appointment

Aims

• To provide the advice people need for the problems they face. • To improve the policies and practices that affect people’s lives.

Principles

The Citizens Advice service provides free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities. We value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination.

For the latest information please visit www.northhertscab.org. uk where you are also invited to complete the ‘Advice Services’ questionnaire. Linda Albert, of North Herts CAB said: “We want to canvass views from individuals on the future of our advice services and how we might target our funds more effectively in order to help as many people as possible”

Follow on Twitter Twitter.com/ NorthHertsCAB Like on Facebook Facebook.com/ CitizensAdvice Watch films on Youtube Youtube.com/ CitizensAdvice www.northhertscab.org.uk www. citizensadvice. org.uk

What happens when you get to the bureau?

You’ll be offered a short session with an assessor, who will identify the most appropriate way to help you. This could be giving you the information you need to solve your problem yourself. Or it could be making an appointment to discuss your problem further – in person, by phone or on email. Sometimes we might direct you to a different organisation that is better placed to help.

FREE TASTER SESSIONS WITH ROYSTON CHORAL SOCIETY

Is this you? • You enjoy singing along at a Last Night of the Proms events • You have to restrain yourself from singing aloud to your iPod on the train • You envy the participants in Gareth Malone’s military wives’ and workplace choirs • You sang in school or church choirs as a young person but have got out of the habit • You have read that singing is good for you but don’t know how to get involved Then come along to Royston Choral Society’s next Open Rehearsal Tuesday September 9th 8pm at Royston Parish Church. RCS knows that many potential singers are put off by the thought of auditions so we invite new singers to come along for up to 3 weeks, starting with the open rehearsal, free of charge, to see how they get on. No one is asked to sing on their own. After the free 3 weeks, termly fees are reasonable and include music hire. One of our altos had never sung in a choir before attending an RCS Open Rehearsal. Now she says singing with RCS is ‘challenging, satisfying and a good diversion from everyday life’ – and she’s even been abroad on singing holidays! Just in the last two years groups from RCS have sung in New York’s Carnegie Hall and in Italy. RCS sings a wide range of music from Bach to the Beach Boys, classical works with orchestra and soloists to mixed programmes in local villages. The RCS Autumn Term 2014 will feature the popular Mozart Requiem, to be performed on November 15th and our Christmas Concert on December 20th. ASHWELL BUSINESS CLUB

“In most cases, being a good boss means hiring talented people and then getting out of their way.” So said actress, Tina Fey (most famous for her satirical impressions of US politician, Sarah Palin). And I think she’s spot on. I’ve often talked about the differences between leadership and management in the five years I’ve been writing this column, and I felt that Tina Fey’s words summed it up nicely – recruit high-quality people and then let them use their great skills to do the job you employed them to do, without interference. In my constant research for inspiration, I came across a useful list of 10 differences between a ‘bad boss’ and being a ‘good leader’. Why don’t you read them and see how you fare? • The boss drives employees, the leader encourages them • The boss relies on authority, the leader relies on goodwill. • The boss inspires fear, the leader inspires enthusiasm. • The boss says, “I”, the leader says, “We” • The boss places blame for breakdowns, the leader fixes them • The boss knows how it’s done, the leader shows how it’s done. • The boss uses people, the leader develops people. • The boss takes credit, the leader gives credit • The boss commands, the leader asks. • The boss says, “Go”, the leader says, “Let’s go” These 10 differences are also supported by some research I read recently where 30,000 managers and employees were asked what their bosses did that made them ‘bad’. The top five flaws were as follows: the bad boss fails to inspire, he accepts mediocrity, he lacks clear vision and direction, he is unable to collaborate and be a team player and, finally, the bad boss fails to walk the talk. Next time you need to deal with an employee, a pupil or your children, see whether you can keep out of the ‘Bad Boss’ traps! www.julianberry.co.uk

COMMUNITY

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD Just as every child is different, so too is every school and Autumn Open Days give you a fantastic opportunity to see these differences for yourself. School Open Days are carefully organised to demonstrate the range of subjects and activities available, to showcase the school facilities and to give you the chance to meet staff and, most importantly, pupils. However, it is just as important to dig a little deeper to discover if the school is able to meet the needs and potential of your own child. Our tips will help you to make the right choice for your child.

1

Prepare a list of questions that you wish to ask when you visit. For example, does the school provide for your child’s particular interests? Are there specialist facilities (and specialist staff) for drama, DT sport or music?

2

Look beyond the shiny facilities that the school wants you to remember. Instead look at some of the day-today parts of the school such as notice boards. Do they show a good range of activities and are they interesting and up to date?

3

Tour the school with a current pupil and use the opportunity to see the school through their eyes. What do they think are the strengths and weaknesses? Often the tour guides will be refreshingly honest, and a good gauge of how the pupils themselves view the school.

KS1 and KS2 phonics, reading, writing, spelling and grammar, maths and science 11+ preparation • GCSE English, history • ‘A’ Level English Covering: Royston, surrounding villages and Cambridge Individual and small group places available Feel free to call or email if you have any queries

karentmorgan@gmail.com • 07896 830 284

How will any changes planned over the time that your son or daughter will be at the school impact on your child’s education, both good and bad.

7

If you are a working parent, what provision is there for breakfast and after-school clubs? If you are looking at schools from further afield, what transport options are available?

8

A representative from the school’s parents’ association can provide a very different perspective and may be a fantastic source of information about the practicalities of school life.

9

Finally, while the open day can provide a snapshot of the school, you cannot beat a personal visit on a normal working day. This is also your chance to quiz the Head about why they think their school is right for your son or daughter.

Do the staff and pupils appear interested in your child? Can you see your child fitting in with the pupils you meet? Do the displays represent a range of abilities? If so, it probably means the school is proud of all its pupils and not just the top achievers.

14TH CENTURY DATE FOR CAVE

Royston Cave was rediscovered in 1742 and since then people have been trying to discover the origin and purpose of the cave. Unfortunately, no historical records prior to 1742 exist to help us interpret what we see there and there is no organic material in the cave that could be used for carbon dating. Additionally, many of the costumes and details are heavily degraded and it is even possible that some have been adjusted. As always with a mystery, various theories have been put forward to explain the cave. These include amongst others the fact that it may have been the town prison, an anchorite cell, an early Masonic Lodge or a meeting place for the Knights Templar. Some also believe that over time the cave may have had multiple uses. There are also a significant number of people who believe that the cave is a sacred place, a source of spiritual and healing energy, because they believe that two ley lines cross inside the cave creating a special and powerful space. However, whilst all the theories are feasible and most are cogently argued none of them currently offer evidence to allow us to be sure who actually carved the figures and why. So, in 2012, we welcomed a visit by Philip Lankester, retired curator of the Royal Armouries, who carried out research into the arms, armour and costume shown in the cave in order to try and establish the period when the figures were carved. He found that some of the costumes showed similarities with images on the tomb of Edward III, as well as tomb effigies of William of Hatfield and William of Windsor and some of the garments and headdresses he observed were apparently fashionable between circa 1360-1390. He also identified a number of medieval style shields and swords and identified a diagonal sword, close to the horse figure as possibly dating from 1350 or later. Overall, in his opinion, based on the stylistic evidence, the carvings are likely to date to the second half of the 14th century, although, because of the unclear history of the cave, a much later date cannot be entirely ruled out.

PHOENIX CHORUS - FROM CAKES TO LAS VEGAS!

If you attended Royston Summer Rock on a very warm and humid afternoon, you may have seen among the stalls on the High Street a group of ladies selling cakes and CDs and encouraging you to guess the number of sweeties in a jar. We are those ladies and we all sing with Phoenix Chorus, an 80-strong women’s auditioned choir. Although we rehearse in Potton, our members come from far and wide, including a sizeable contingent from Royston and the Mordens, Bassingbourn and Meldreth. Our members range from 24 to 74 years; women from all walks of life, among them educators, health professionals, administrators, housewives, legal professionals, and therapists. The one thing we have in common is our huge passion for singing! We sing a-cappella four part harmony, mainly in barbershop style and have a repertoire encompassing pop, show tunes, toe-tapping up tunes and moving ballads. Earlier this year, we competed in our annual regional competition and, as a result of our high score, which won us a silver medal, we were invited to compete at Sweet Adelines International Convention in Las Vegas in October 2015. We are proud and excited to be joining two other British choruses in representing our region on the international stage at the MGM Grand! However, a trip on this scale doesn’t come cheap and cake sales are only the tip of the iceberg. Over the coming months we will be working hard to raise lots of money in all the ways we can think of, and especially through the thing we do best: SINGING. We’d love to sing for you and can provide groups of different sizes; from four singers up to 80, we’ll take care of your entertainment needs. We’d also be delighted to hear from you if you are a corporate sponsor or an individual willing to provide a donation to support the arts and help ladies from YOUR community. For more information please contact Fiona on 07860 704443 or visit www.phoenixladies.co.uk

Whilst, this new evidence doesn’t unlock the mystery of the cave, it does offer valuable food for thought. It creates an opportunity for research into which groups or individuals might have used the cave from 1350 onwards.

Both these gardens show how by choosing plants that retain their structure into the autumn you can create some fantastic effects. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is

misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn

up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV ÀQGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just

MONEY SAVING GARDENING

If you feel that your garden has become an expensive hobby, checkout our money saving tips for gardening. By Pippa Greenwood • Apply for an allotment. An allotment opens up a whole new opportunity to grow almost unlimited food at very little cost, get exercise without paying for the gym, and learn a lot from your neighbouring plot holders. • Gardeners are a very generous bunch, so don’t feel embarrassed to ask, friends, neighbours, or fellow allotmenteers for cuttings or seedlings of plants that you have admired. It is part of what gardening is all about. • Collect softish, deciduous leaves to make free soil improver. Just make a ‘cage’ from galvanised wire with posts at the corners or cram the leaves into bin liners and puncture a few holes. • Make the most of every bit of fruit and veg that your garden or allotment produces. Make jams, chutnies, jellies and of course bottle or freeze just about anything else. • Make your own wasp trap. Use a jam jar part filled with stale jam, mixed with water and topped with tin foil with a few holes in it made using a pencil. • Many local councils offer really good value composters and compost bins. Better still, if you’re at all handy with the hammer and nails, create your own from old pallets or floor boards. • Fill a flowerbed with colour by sowing it with hardy annual seeds – some can be collected from existing plants, others from packet seed, often at under £1 per packet. • Ask your local pub to give you any stale beer from the driptrays and use it as slug bait. Use an old plastic beaker part filled with beer and placed so that the rim is about 1cm above soil level in a slug and snail prone area. • Enjoy some wild food. Many garden plants are edible, and don’t forget the old favourites such as hedgerow blackberries - great for crumble, stewed with some apple or for making into bramble jelly. • Many fruits sold in the supermarket come in smart, clear-plastic trays, which can be used as miniature seed trays, and most even come with a clear plastic top, the perfect mini propagator lid. • Growing your own vegetables really can save you a packet. now you can order in seed for crops, and onion sets and garlic for crops early next summer. Then early in the year start planting potatoes and sowing seed. • Look after your garden tools. Store them in a dry shed or garage, wipe over any metal parts with an oily rag to keep rust at bay and they’ll last years longer. • Invest in a few raspberry canes. This has to be the best money saving crop, as they are expensive in the shops. Once established autumn fruiting varieties yield heavy crops and can give you ‘posh’ fruit....for just pennies. • The garden furniture is probably the most costly item in your garden and statistics show it’s what gardeners spend most money on replacing. Remove washable seat-pads and cushions first, wash and dry these and then cover the furniture up or move it into a shed or garage if possible.
