WELCOME
To the October issue of The Listing
We are delighted to say that our Eats and Drinks section this month showcases a broad selection of the venues that have opened their Christmas bookings for this December. Whilst I enjoy Christmas, I firmly believe that it should stay where it belongs - in December. However, even I recognise the need to plan ahead, and even more so when our local pubs and restaurants are of such a high standard. On our pages, you can choose from The Three Tuns, the Woodman, The Old Bull Inn, Palazzo, Ad Hoc, the Buffet Kitchen and La Cocina Latina, who all offer superb choice and food for the party season. Out and About this month, we talk to Royston Town Band who are celebrating their 150 year anniversary. What an achievement! To commemorate the occasion, they will be playing at a special concert in the Church in mid-October. Following the success of the Rugby Club feature last month and Cycling back in July, we are proud to launch a new sports feature. It will take us some time to cover all the differing sports that Royston and District has to offer, but The Listing aim is to provide our readers with an overview of all the sports based groups available - who knows, it may encourage you to try something new! If you do give something a try, please let us know how you get on. This month, we start with swimming.
Don’t hesitate to get in touch if we can help you promote your business to households in the SG8 area. Our background is in marketing and The Listing reaches more households than any other publication in the area each and every month. With best wishes

Picture Palace Pick
This month’s pick is the Picture Palaces Halloween Special: Ghostbusters! Who can resist a trip back to the eighties to watch the three university parapsychologists lose their research grant and their credibility when the Dean decides that their theories, methods and conclusions have no place in his august institution. Out of a job, they decide to go into business for themselves, setting up as professional supernatural eliminators. Starting out with only a converted fire station and a beat-up ambulance to their name, the Ghostbusters quickly become local heroes when the city sees a dramatic rise in paranormal activity and a giant marshmallow threatens its very existence.

OUT & ABOUT Royston Town Band
TRUMPETING 150 YEARS OF ROYSTON TOWN BAND This year sees the 150th anniversary of the formation of Royston Town Band and to mark this momentous event the band would like to invite everyone, including past members, friends and supporters old and new to a unique celebratory 150th anniversary concert. The concert programme will aim to include a piece from each of the fifteen decades of the band’s existence. Entry to the concert is free (there will be a retiring collection for the ‘New Bandroom Fund’) with a raffle and refreshments during the interval.
hoped that construction will be able to start very soon. The band is continuing to raise funds for the bandroom and would welcome any donations.

Royston Town Band has been through many names and forms over the years, starting as the Royston Volunteer Band, later changing to the Royston Teetotal Band, followed by the Royston Military Band before settling on its current incarnation. Formed by the noted Roystonian William Hinkins, the band had its headquarters at a number of locations in town until, in 1960, it achieved a longstanding aim; the building of its own practice room behind the Manor House Club. When the Manor House was sold last year, the band had to move out of their home of 50 years and look for a new one. Land was identified at the rear of Tannery Drift School field and planning for the building of the new band hut was applied for. This planning phase has proved to be a difficult and lengthy process, but finally nearly everything is in place and it is

GHOST WALK RESURRECTED!
If you dare, join Royston resident and Ghost hunter Damien O’Dell on All Souls Day (1st Nov) for a tour of Royston. Taking in around twenty of the locations where paranormal activity has been noted including the Banyers Hotel and the old North Star building, the tour will last around an hour. There will be a chance to get some refreshment at the Templars Rest during the tour which starts at 11am at the Railway Station. Tickets are available from Royston Library. Damien has worked with director Mike Doyle to film a documentary “Haunted Hitchin Priory” (Special price for Ghost Walkers: £8) in which psychic David Griffiths and the team move a troubled spirit from the attic. During filming they were afforded full access to the Priory and uncovered much paranormal activity. Damien’s group APIS (Anglia Paranormal Investigation Society) are based in Royston and are looking for a few new members to replace some of the team who have moved abroad. So, if you are ‘passionate about the paranormal’ just get in touch with him and he’ll explain all about membership.

Join the celebrations
October 2014 marks ten years of giving and getting between members at the Royston Time Bank and they’re having a party to celebrate – with popcorn and a family film – at the Royston Picture Palace on Sunday 19 October. Unlike conventional volunteering, the time bank records and rewards one member’s help for another in time credits (1 hour = 1 credit). Members can use their credits to ‘buy’ help from someone else – a bit of gardening, a lift to the shops, or maybe a friendly teatime chat. Chris Lee, founder of the Time Bank when it was set up and run at the Royston Volunteer Centre, is delighted that the good work goes on. “I’m quietly surprised when anything lasts for more than a couple of years. The success of the Time Bank reflects the hard work and energy of both the organisers and the members themselves.” Time Bank member and other who are interested are invited to join the fun from 2.30pm – 5.30pm on October 19th.

SPOTLIGHT ON
IF IT HAS WHEELS, JON IS YOUR MAN!
The present church is dedicated to All Saints. It had a major restoration in 1882 but includes sections of a 13th-century building. The font is 11th century. The village boasts a fantastic Community Hub building with a cafĂŠ with free Wi-Fi, a library access point and meeting rooms which can be used for leisure or business. It also offers a range of key community support services and aims to be a focal point for assistance and advice. There are plenty of options for eating and drinking including the beautiful Sheene Mill, Herbies Bar and Grill, The Dolphin and The Black Horse. And Melbourn also has a Fish and Chip shop as every village should!
Business Profile
MELBOURN
The origins of the village stem from the presence of springs at Melbourn Bury and the several ancient trackways that cross the parish; the Icknield Way runs to the south of the parish and Ashwell Street and the Roman CambridgeRoyston road are also believed to follow prehistoric trackways.
Driving students are in safe hands with independent Driving School L2K. Jon is a fully qualified, certified and CRB checked professional advanced driver trainer. His background is in motor racing and he has driven across Europe and in the USA in everything from sports cars to 4x4. This experience and his love of driving prompted Jon to found the school in 2000 (hence the name) following his instructor training. Self employed since the beginning and still going strong after almost 15 years, Jon says; “I thought I could bring some new ideas and techniques to the industry and have pioneered computer based training for theory and hazard perception and simplified highway code. I pride myself on remaining independent and providing a personal service tailored to each individuals needs at any level. In late 2012 Jon launched TPR Bike Services, using his skills and qualifications as a mechanic to set up and maintain all manner of wheeled machines including bikes and scooters. This was the result of Jon helping friends and realising how many people had badly built or maintained bikes. Jon is now the Mechanic for Royston Rockets BMX Club. SHANNON EXPRESS
Bessie, 2/3 year old Jack Russell crossbreed. Bessie is a delightful little girl, is great with other dogs and loves some human company. She needs some lead training but will sit and give you her paw. She has passed the cat test.
Shannon Express is a group of male singers based in Potton, Bedfordshire. Currently we have about fifty five members of all ages, mostly amateur singers drawn from the local area (including Royston) with a significant number travelling from different parts of the region. New members are always welcome - our next recruitment evening is on 9th October 2014 at the Holiday Inn, Sandy (A1 Sandy roundabout) We sing as a chorus in what originated as the barbershop singing style. Nowadays our style of music is more widely known as ‘a cappella’ or four part close harmony singing and the days of striped waistcoats and straw boaters have long since gone! Our music is slick, harmonious and thoroughly entertaining – both for us and for our audiences. We are looking forward to our return visit to Royston Methodist Church on Saturday 8th November 2014, at 7.45pm, with a concert in aid of the Methodist Church and the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Charity Concert, Royston Methodist Church, 8th November Tickets, £8 – call Brian on 07895 095455 www.shannonexpress.org.uk

TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
Wet, Wild and Green’ was the title of Geoff Evans’ talk at our September meeting. For the ‘Wet’ section he presented slides of Scottish rivers and waterfalls in full flow with a backdrop of dramatic scenery. The strength and movement of the dangerous waters cascading down the mountains was certainly captured in his pictures. The ‘Wild’ covered a visit he had made to a medieval tournament, held in Sussex, featuring battle re-enactments. There were entries from home and overseas with men in full fighting regalia, together with their families, also in costume. Many participants had brought along their own accommodation in the form of medieval tents – with beds! It certainly looked to be a wild event. The ‘Green’ section took us to Greenland, where Geoff and his wife were transported by helicopter to two small islands off the coast. The wonderfully clean air and Geoff’s photography certainly captured the dramatic landscape of snow and ice. Inhabitants of the islands are reliant on weather conditions Royston Podiatry Clinic for even their basic needs and supply boats frequently have to struggle through Graham D Read, Podiatrist (Chiropodist) icebergs to reach the small population. For our September meeting we welcomed Svend Jensen who shared his memories of ‘5 years under German occupation’. During the Second World War Svend was a child living on a farm in Denmark with his grandparents and parents near the German border. He remembered the day that the Germans invaded and explained how initially little changed. It was important to the Germans for things to continue as normal as they needed the food that Denmark could produce. The King of Denmark remained throughout the war and refused to agree to the Jews wearing the Star of David, saying that all would wear it or no one as they were all the Danes. Fortunately a German shipping attaché warned that Jews were to be rounded up the following week and so many were able to escape. The Danish Resistance were very active and activities included helping people escape to Sweden and blowing up many railway lines to hamper supplies. Danish sailors also fought during the war and 5000 lost their lives. Svend remembered hearing the end of the war announced on the radio and then on 5th May 1945 the British arrived. He finished by saying the British have a very special place in Danish hearts for what they did for his country during the war. This was a very interesting and moving talk which gave a personal insight of Svend’s experiences during the occupation. WI AM meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Market Hill Rooms, Royston from 10am. Visitors are always welcome, call Irene on 01763 249 455 for more information.

ROYSTON CRAFT FAIR FLOURISHES
Crafter and enrepreneur Laura Whitford has organised two more craft fairs at the Town Hall on Saturday 18 October and Saturday 15 November following on from the success of the Fair held in the Summer. Both events will feature a tea room, in November this will be run by the popular Vintage Tearoom. Laura says “Apart from a local charity, and a stall offering free mini facials (we could all do with a pamper whilst Christmas shopping), the stalls will sell handmade products, and most of them are local which is great because I’d love customer’s money to go to small local businesses rather than the chains!” She hopes to run the events every year and may include an Easter Fair!

At our September Meeting, Barbara Mackellar gave an interesting talk on “Midwives in the 50’s”.She began by asking how many of our members had been Nurses or Midwives. She was surprised that the answer was none. She joined the Wrens in 1954 and was enlisted in the Fleet Air Arm where the Wrens were responsible for the charts. As Maths was not her strong point she decided to do a Nursing course and as they were short of Midwives she trained as one starting at Hackney Hospital. She then went to the Salvation Army Mothers Hospital where she trained for 2 years. There was no time off, when they were not on the wards or clinics they were studying. Barbara travelled the world with her work encountering many problems including Female Genital Mutilation and she told some great stories from her extraordinary Career. The competition for a Baby Photo was won by June Winch and the raffle by Marion Chamberlain. Our next meeting is on the 9th October in the Heritage Hall when “Col Maggs” will be instructing us in ‘’Tai Chi Chuan” We meet from 1.45pm - 4.00pm.If you would like more information please contact our President Helen Barrett on 01763 849122.

Swimming
in & around Royston WILD SWIMMING!
Ever fancied a dip in a river? Wild Swimming is becoming increasingly popular and whether you want to just go for a dip, or a full on swim then there are a couple of organisations that provide details of places where you can take the plunge and get at one with nature! Local spots are the River Cam at the end of the recreation ground in Great Shelford and at Granchester Meadows. At great Shelford there was once a bathing platform and a bylaw requires “proper swimming dress”. If you are setting off to swim outdoors then consider the following questions before you get in the water and make sure that you stay safe:
Is it clean? • Is it safe? • Am I safe? • Is it legal? • Will I get too cold?
The Outdoor Swimming Society and Wild Swimming have lots more information and advice on their website listed below.

COMMUNITY SWIMATHON
Organised by the Rotary Club, this is your opportunity to donate 50% of the sponsorship money raised by your team to your own chosen Charity or dedicate it towards your own in-house project. The other 50% will be distributed by the Rotary Club of Royston Charity Fund helping alleviate suffering at home and overseas Teams can have up to 6 members who swim in relay for 55 minutes. The aim is for each team to swim as many lengths as possible in the 55 minutes available. Each team member to have sought sponsors for the number of lengths the team (not the individual) completes. In so doing we hope we will raise a useful sum of money for all our chosen charities and projects. This is not a race and no team or individual is being asked to swim an unduly long distance. The event involves each team swimming continuously for 55 minutes, one member only of the team being in the water at a time. There are no hard and fast rules about how a team should organise itself - some may like to swim a length in turn, others might want to split the time amongst them. All we ask is that inexperienced or out of condition swimmers do not exceed their capacity. Community Swimathon, Sat 18th & Sun 19th October 2014: 6 - 10pm

ROYSTON SWIM CLUB
Melbourn Sports is committed to providing affordable sport and fitness to the local community. We’re here to help you get started and stay motivated. Our swimming programme caters for a variety of tastes and abilities, including general, female-only and adult lane sessions plus parent and child ‘fun’ groups. Here’s some tips for successful swims:
The Royston Swim Club promotes and encourages swimming, at all levels, for age 7 upwards (including Masters). Members encompass both those that swim for fitness and those that compete (up to and including at National Level).
Make It A Habit Use a diary to schedule a weekly pool visit.
Consider purchasing an annual swim pass to save even more on prices
Take The Kids Swimming is a great activity to get families moving and having fun together
Swim With A Friend Find a ‘swim buddy’. You’ll act as
encouragement and support to each other, and this will help you achieve and surpass your fitness goals
Mix It Up The swimming pool is also a great playground and gym (even for non-swimmers), so vary your pool activities (such as aquafit) to get the most from this facility

Muscle cannot turn into fat!!! That’s a myth. The muscles may shrink if you train less, and feel softer. On top of this, most people don’t lower their calorie intake to match their decreased need. Too many calories = more fat! Eat less when exercising less.
The main focus of the Club is the Hertfordshire League galas (Majors and Peanuts) against other clubs from the county, however, from the age of 9 upwards, swimmers can also compete in Open Meets (which enable swimmers to qualify for Hertfordshire County Championships) and Regional Championships. Head coach of the RSC, Jeremy Latham, came to the club in 2012 after having been squad coach with Cambridge for 3 years. Having competed from the age of 12, he went on to study Sports Science at University. He is an enthusiastic coach and has led the club in obtaining numerous wins last season. Royston swim club has several training sessions per week, depending on level; see our website for details. Fees are based on the number of swim sessions attended per week and there is a joining fee to cover ASA membership fees and insurance. RSC are currently looking for new swimmers to join the club, particularly 9 year olds and those 14 years or older.

ROYSTON REPAIR CAFE WELCOMES BROKEN VACUUM CLEANERS
Since the beginning of September, high-powered vacuum cleaners have become irreplaceable. A European ban on companies manufacturing or importing vacuum cleaners with a motor that exceeds 1,600 watts means repair is the only option for owners of sick, but much-loved, machines. VOLUNTEER REPAIRER JOHN If your vacuum cleaner is BENNETT RISES TO THE not sucking as hard as it should, CHALLENGE help is at hand from the Royston Repair Cafe. This free community event is designed to keep household items – not just vacuum cleaners – in use for longer, saving money for owners and reducing landfill waste. The next Royston Repair Cafe is on Sunday 26th October at the Market Hills Rooms in the town centre. The event is free but you need to book your place in advance so the right volunteer repairs will be on hand to assess, and hopefully fix, your broken item.

IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE BUSINESS? I’m currently on a contract at a large Cambridge hospital, helping to train doctors on how to use the new electronic patient record system being launched there this autumn. It was quite a culture shock being parachuted into the NHS, but training is going really well so I wanted to share the secrets of our success: Work hard As part of the team of eight, training several thousand doctors before October 25th, I’m responsible for about 50 training sessions over the next eight weeks, sometimes working 15 hour days. You don’t have to work long hours to be successful, but you must be prepared to put in the time when the occasion demands. Be sympathetic My hours may be long, but yesterday I met a medic straight after a 48 hour shift on-call, and last week I met a surgeon who had just carried out two liver transplants one after the other. And both of these guys then needed to sit down in a classroom and listen to me for six hours... Poor devils! Be understanding When I advise sales teams, I always suggest they “seek to understand, before trying to be understood, and I do the same in the hospital training room to get these tired people motivated; I get to know them. Most hospital doctors I meet, care deeply about their patients and are frustrated by cumbersome admin tasks, so I show them how the new system will improve patient care by streamlining administration and freeing up their time to do what they’re best at. Be honest And in case they think I don’t mean what I say, I remind them that their past and future patients include me, my family and my friends, so they can trust me. That ought to do it! Why not try this approach in your business and get your staff ‘fighting fit’ again? www.julianberry.co.uk

OCTOBER 14 • ISSUE 110
Scoots, a Hertfordshire Wheels2Work charity project which aims to provide transport to people who cannot easily get to work or college, has expanded its area to cover North Herts. For a weekly contribution, the project provides clients with a brand new 50cc or 125cc scooter, CBT training, twelve months’ insurance, tax and servicing, with the bike becoming the client’s property after a year. A lock, helmet, waterproof trousers, jacket and gloves are also included in the package. Another new branch of the scheme will be short-term scooter rental. In rural areas transport can be difficult to arrange, especially for young people and those who work late nights. It is often the case that the only barrier to accepting a job offer is the candidate’s inability to get there. When people are in a situation where they must acquire transport in order to start earning, the upfront cost of buying a car can be too high. A motorcycle is a cheaper option and Scoots’ weekly payment plan spreads the cost of the purchase. Even 16 year olds can ride 50cc mopeds, and motorcycle riders of any age will be at a significant advantage if they go on to take the car driving test, thanks to their road awareness and knowledge of driving theory. Anyone who lives, works or goes to college in Hertfordshire is eligible for the Scoots scheme.

MELBOURN VILLAGE COLLEGE CONTINUES TO RAISE ASPIRATIONS
Melbourn Village College has started its new term in the smartest way possible, with a brand new uniform for its students. The new uniform follows on from a year, it’s first as an academy working in partnership with Comberton Academy Trust, in which the College recorded its highest ever GCSE results. Seventy-five per cent of students passed with five or more A* to C grades (including English and Maths); a rise of five per cent from last year. The smart new shirt, tie and jumper are made distinctive with a new deep blue colouring, with the tie also featuring thin gold striping. An emphasis has been put on a smart and professional look, to match the school’s recent success as well as its future as an academy. Vice Principal, Regina Lawrence, said: “Melbourn Village College has undergone a transformation since becoming an academy. It was only right that we paired record breaking results, and an exciting future, with a new uniform to reflect our ambition. We set ourselves high standards, and the presentation of everyone at the college is no different. “The new uniform is a reinvention; but it keeps at its heart what Melbourn Village College has always been – a local school that is personal enough to know and understand each student as an individual, but filled with the sort of high standards and opportunities that come with being partnered with an Academy Trust like Comberton.”

MVC: WORLD CHALLENGE ETHIOPIA
Just a few days after the GCSE exams ended, 22 students and 4 staff left Melbourn and travelled 3500 miles to Ethiopia. After spending a night in a hotel near the airport, the team woke to the hustle and bustle of a large East African city. The students worked in groups with some heading to Debre Zeit where they worked tirelessly renovating classrooms, making planting areas so the children could grow their own food and running summer school classes with the children. Another group headed to Wenchi, a high altitude area, to begin the trek phase of their trip and immersed themselves in traditional Ethiopian culture. They also had the opportunity to wash in a geothermic heated waterfall. The first group visited Awash National Park where they took a game drive to see a wide variety of antelope, baboons, ostriches, monkeys as well as crocodiles at the base of the spectacular Awash Falls. Many children lined the roads strangely wanting our empty plastic bottles. This part of the country is very dry so by having lots of empty bottles the families could store water. The second group moved on to a school in the town of Dukum which had decent facilities. However, each day the students at break and lunchtime would have to carry 10 litre jerry cans into the town to fill up and bring back for drinking and hand washing. So the first job was to connect the school to the town’s water supply to a communal water station to drink from freely. The team then dug a 250 meter trench across the campus ready to drop wwater pipes into ready for connection to a hand washing station being built adjacent to the student toilets. Overall the students who each raised £2,000 for the trip did extremely well in adapting to the culture, the environment, the wildlife and the lack of sanitation and worked very well as a team.
TANNERY GETS GOLD!
Last year one of our whole school priorities was to further enhance the enriched curriculum we offer. As part of this priority we worked towards achieving Artsmark, an accreditation awarded by the Arts Council for high quality Arts (music, art, dance and drama). Our assessor made the following comments, “Tannery Drift provides all pupils with a rich and well planned range of arts opportunities within and beyond the formal curriculum. Timetabled hours for the arts are high, extracurricular activities are plentiful and their take up is good.”
Melbourn Village College’s 2014 GCSE results are the best in our history and we invite you to come and see us at work. If you would like to visit the College during the day, please do not hesitate to contact the Principal’s PA on office@mvc.org.uk or telephone 01763 223400 to book your tour. Melbourn is a member of the Comberton Academy Trust, a partnership of four academies, which is already offering increased opportunities for students and staff.

The hard work of the children and staff has been recognised with Tannery achieving Artsmark Gold. We were delighted with the comments made by our assessor, “The school has an energetic, creative and original approach to developing the arts for all pupils.” We are now looking forward to building on this achievement by continuing to work with Creative Royston; giving more children the chance to access music tuition and further developing the outdoor areas for creative learning.

HOMES & GARDENS In the garden... October We have enjoyed a lovely mild start to the autumn, but this is inevitably going to change. As the temperatures begin to drop leaves begin to reveal their glorious autumn tints. In this feature I will suggest ways to make improvements to your outdoor spaces at this time of year to make them even more enjoyable.
1. Plant an Autumn Focal point
A great way to make the garden sing out at this time of year is to plant an autumn focal point. This can be achieved by choosing a specimen tree that has good autumn colour. Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Lane Roberts’ is one such tree. The maple like leaves turn through the whole range of autumn colours from orange, red to deep purple before finally descending to the ground. It prefers a well-drained, fertile soil in an open position. Cercidiphyllum japonicum is one of my favourite autumn trees, not only does it have great colour, but the decaying leaves give off an aroma of burnt sugar, it is for this reason it affectionately known as the Candy Floss Tree. It likes deep, fertile soil and makes a good tree for a sheltered garden.

Top tips and ideas for your garden 2. Seasonal continuity
Does your garden offer interest at this time of year? If the answer is no, then look at ways to inject some autumn glamour into your outdoor space. Not everyone has space for a specimen tree but there are many shrubs that have good autumn colour too, such as Cotinus ‘Flame’, Euonymus alatus, Ribes odaratum and Viburnum opulus to name just a few. If space is limited why not consider a climbing plant instead. Parthenocissus ‘Henryana’ is a cracker as is Vitis coignetiae.
3. To cut or not to cut the herbaceous border?
It depends what type of gardener you are! Some gardeners find the dying and decaying structure of plants messy and can’t help themselves. This is fine, if a little old fashioned, especially when applied to the modern herbaceous border that should contain a mixture of herbaceous perennials and grasses. I love to embrace the structure and form of the decaying plants especially when I have designed the planting with this in mind. Grasses and many perennials will hold their structure well through the autumn. Miscanthus sinensis ‘Marlepartus’,

Melbourn garden designer Richard Arnott www.thinkgardenthinkrichard.co.uk Phlomis russeliana, Astrantia major ‘Roma’, Agastache foeniculum, Achillea ‘Cerrise Queen’, Echinacea purpurea and Eupatorium purpureum ‘Atropurpureum’ are a few of my favourites.
4. Plan bare root planting for next month Next month the nurserymen will be starting to think about supplying the first bare root plant material. Now is a good time to plan bare root native hedge planting, tree ordering and evergreen hedging. I love to use box in my garden designs as it is a classic way of defining an area. This is a cost effective way to plant up larger areas.
5. Be Inspired
Why not get out in the autumn and experience the changing of the seasons. Wandelbury near Cambridge is good, as is the Wimpole estate. The University Botanic Garden Cambridge is a great resource for researching new plants for your autumn garden. Or for spectacular autumn colour take a trip to Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire to see its famous collection of Acers. Go for it! Start with little changes, it can make all the difference to your enjoyment of the garden!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is
misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn
up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV ÀQGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just
the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

CONIFERS
Conifers are a great way to add colour, texture and living sculpture to your garden 365 days of the year. With several hundred different cultivars of conifer to choose from in the UK, there really is one to suit every situation. Dwarf Conifers
There are many conifers which reach a maximum height of 1m (3ft). These are obviously particularly useful for small gardens and will often add a great extra dimension to a rock garden or a small-scale border. They may need an occasional trimming, but generally hold their shape well. Recommended: Picea abies ‘Little Gem’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Gnome’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Aurea’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Vilmoriniana’, Picea abies ‘Nidiformis’
Tall and Narrow
Very stylish, many of the columnar or tall, slim conifers look especially stunning when used to create a screen, or to add height to a mixed border or a shrub border. Being rather like a living sculpture they are also good grown as a single specimen tree in a lawn. Recommended: Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Aurea’, Juniperus scopulorum ‘Skyrocket’, Thuja plicata ‘Fastigiata’.
Pyramid-shaped Conifers
With their relatively wide bases and narrow tops, pyramidal conifers can bring welcome shape, texture and evergreen colour to your garden and if carefully position are often useful to hide an eyesore. Recommended: Picea albertiana ‘Conica’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Yvonne’ or Thymus occidentalis ‘Yellow Ribbon’
Spherical Conifers
With their prominently rounded shape these conifers naturally produce a sculptured look and are perfect for growing either side of a gateway or house entrance. They also look great in a mixed border, adding colour, texture and interest when many of the other border ingredients are below ground. Recommended: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Sunset’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Glauca’, Thuja occidentalis ‘Danice’
Ground-Cover Conifers
Great for hiding low-lying eyesores such as manhole covers, an evergreen groundcover hides them all year long. Low growing conifers
also work well for covering steep slopes and edging paths and beds. They will help to keep weeds at bay and are very low maintenance. Recommended: Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Coat’, Juniperus conferata, Juniperus communis ‘Compressa’.
Conifers for Containers
Conifers can look great either on their own (especially when planted with a few small bulbs around their roots, to add splashes of seasonal colour) or in a mixed planting where they help to bring structure, texture and off-season colour. Recommended: Juniperus compressa ‘Compressa’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Ellwood’s Gold’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Sekkan-Sugi’ , Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Springtime’, Pinus leucodermis ‘Schmidtii’
Planting and Growing Tips
Make the planting hole a minimum of 1m wide by 30cm deep and incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter such as garden compost, proprietary planting mix or well-rotted manure. Tease or spread out the roots well and backfill the hole with garden soil mixed with planting compost. Make sure that only the roots are below the soil surface, water in well. Keep the soil moist at all times, especially during late spring and summer when drought is likely. Feed in April using a proprietary fertiliser to keep the growth good and ensure it is a good colour. Trim conifers regularly but remember if you cut back into old or brown growth you’ll end up expose all the old growth as they don’t produce dormant buds. by Pippa Greenwood
