WELCOME To the November issue of The Listing
The nights might have drawn in but this is no reason to stay in and hibernate for the winter! Why not visit fireworks extravaganzas, many of which are key fundraisers for the schools which host them, so not only do you get to ooh and aah at the ever-more creative displays but you are helping our local schools too. Royston Hockey Club tell us about their organisation in our regular sports feature and invite you to come along to give the sport a try. If you would rather be inside, why not visit the Royston Picture Palace. The new, state-of-theart digital cinema in Royston is an asset to the town, and shows films on Friday and Saturday evenings plus a couple of matinees in the month. November’s programme offers a superb choice so turn the page for details and head online (or pop into Royston Library) to book your seats!

LET RICHMOND’S TAKE THE STRAIN!
We found out how relaxing it is to have all the details of a trip taken care of when we were invited to take an excursion to the West End to see Mamma Mia by Richmond’s Coaches. We were really looking forward to the day and it did not disappoint. We met the clean, modern, air-conditioned coach at the bus station in Royston and then set off to pick up the rest of the passengers. The coach driver explained the structure of the day and we sat back to chat and enjoy the journey. Once in London we drove along Embankment and were able to do a little landmark spotting. Very memorably, we saw the spectacular display of poppies at the Tower of London. We arrived in good time for the lunch (which was part of the deal) at the Kingsway Hall Hotel and the team there were ready to accommodate us. Our RICHMOND’S lunch of Braised Lamb followed by Pear Crumble DRIVER DAVID was delicious. Afterwards David was back to pick us up and take us to the door of the theatre. He reassured us that he would be back to pick us up after the performance and, as we had a little time to spare it seemed rude not to visit a local pub for pre-show glass of wine but others wandered around Covent Garden taking in the atmosphere! Of course the show itself was fabulous and we had very good seats. After a little singing and dancing along it was time to find the coach, which we did easily, and relax for the journey home! No need to look at a watch or worry about travel arrangements all day long. The trip was the perfect antidote to all the clock watching and running around that makes up many of our lives today. The coach trip, the two course lunch, the excellent show tickets and the door to door service in London was great value at £72. We would whole heartedly recommend that you give one of the many Richmond’s excursions a go! Richmond’s Coaches 01763 848226

OUT & ABOUT The Royal British Legion
“LIVE ON” … TO THE MEMORY OF THE FALLEN AND THE FUTURE OF THE LIVING August 4th 2014 marked the centenary of the start of the First World War, also referred to as the Great War. This occasion was marked by the Royston Branch of the Royal British Legion with a service of Remembrance on Sunday 3rd of August and a Lights Out Service on the Monday evening of 4th of August; the time that Great Britain entered the war. On Sunday November 9th 2014 (Remembrance Sunday) and again on Tuesday 11th of November 2014 (Armistice Day) the First World War will be in the minds of many, as will be all the wars and conflicts that our service personnel have been involved in since; we will remember the sacrifices made, and the lives lost in service to our country. As custodians of Remembrance the Royal British Legion ensures the memories of those who have fought and sacrificed in the British Armed Forces live on through the generations. This is also the time of year of the Royal British Legions annual Poppy appeal. The Royal British Legion created the Poppy Appeal to help those returning from the First World War. A century on from the start of that conflict, we‘re still helping today’s Armed Forces families in much the same way, whether coping with bereavement, living with disability, or finding employment. In a year that marks the Centenary of the conflict which gave birth to the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance and hope, the Legion’s role remains as contemporary and as vital as it has ever been, supporting today’s generation of Armed Forces families and veterans. The money raised through the Poppy Appeal goes directly to The Royal British Legion’s welfare work providing through life care to anyone who is currently serving in the British Armed Forces, who has previously served, and their families. Monies raised from the Poppy Appeal Help:• bereaved families to Live On • wounded Service men and women to Live On • younger veterans seeking employment and housing to Live On
• older veterans needing age-related care to Live On The symbol of the poppy represents Remembrance of the past and hope for the future. Wear your poppy with pride and please support the Royal British Legion. Written by Chris Murphy - Chairman Royal British Legion, Royston Branch
The Parade this year will set off from Queens Road, Royston at 10.25am on Sunday 9th November and arrive at the Melbourn Street Memorial at 10.40am. The main service starts at 10.45am.

For the first time in history Ultimate British Wrestling or UBW as their fans call it, will be coming to Royston!! It’s promising to be an action-packed live event for the whole family to enjoy. There’s a huge line-up of matches on the card including a women’s match between Lulu and Jezabeth. Lulu is fresh off of a recent victory in Hitchin, but how will she cope when up against the strong and somewhat strange Jezabeth? Also the night will see the UBW debut of Chris Wyld a 12 year veteran in the ring – what will he have in store for the fans? But to top the night off in a spectacular fashion, for the main event Rich ‘N’ Famous defends the Ultimate British Heavyweight Championship against the number 1 contender Sween. Rich ‘N’ Famous has fought tough opposition to hold onto the title for a year now. Can he hold onto it for the fans of Royston? Or will Sween, accompanied by Paul James, get the upper hand? You’ll have to go along to the Coombes Community Centre on the 8th of November to find out!

SPOTLIGHT ON BARLEY
Barley is a truly beautiful English village. It lies at the north easternmost tip of Hertfordshire. Originally an Iron Age settlement before becoming a community of Romano-British farmsteads, in Saxon times the village was known as “Beorasele” meaning Bjorn’s Hall and was a popular resting place for weary travellers. By the time of the Norman conquests Barley had grown to support four manorial estates, run by religious orders, and was one of the most prosperous farming communities in Hertfordshire. The two great landmarks of the village are the gallows sign of The Fox and Hounds which after moving from the High Street in 1955 now spans the Saffron Walden road and also the village Town House, a medieval moot hall that is today still used for village meetings and for marriage ceremonies. The Town House dates back to 1530 but it is thought that it replaced a much older building that had stood for the previous 400 years. The Cage or Lock Up is 17th Century. On a sunny autumn day it is a pleasure to wander and take in the sleepy atmosphere. But Barley is swan like. Beneath the surface it is a hive of activity. For a community of just 279 homes, Barley is blessed with an excellent school, two shops and post office, a garage, a GP practice and dispensary, three livery yards, a care home, several holiday lets, Richmond’s coach station and two pubs, including the much praised Chequers. With its Chelsea Medal winning Horticultural Society and an active cricket club whose two teams won both their championships in 2014, Barley is still a thriving community. Barley is also home to the Khandel light charity which works to improve the lives of the vulnerable and disadvantaged families in Khandel, Rajasthan and its surrounding community. The current focus of the charity is to support girls and young women. Projects include providing food to ensure that women have the resources to feed their female children and establishing training programmes for adolescent girls which allows them to learn valuable skills and move towards self sufficiency. The Charity is holding a Dinner and Dance on Saturday, 22nd November in Great Chishill village hall. The evening

will be professionally catered with a delicious three-course dinner, a free glass of wine on arrival and dancing to a fabulous live band. Khadel Light will also have a stall at the annual Barley Christmas Market on 22nd November. Held at the Town House there will be lots of new stalls this year as well as some old favourites; Crafts, charities and other interesting stalls, fabulous gift ideas plus the church’s homemade cakes and produce stall and a wonderful raffle with prizes donated by our stallholders! Refreshments will be simple, wholesome and very reasonably priced. The fair is organised in aid of Barley Church: so do go along, enjoy chatting to the stall holders and help keep the Church open for future generations to enjoy.

NUTHAMPSTEAD
Nuthampstead village in rightly proud of its association with 398th Bomb Group and the memorials at The Woodman Inn are testament to that. The centre of the village, the Woodman is a welcoming local with a large dining room, a pool table and a couple of guest rooms to boot. Real ales grace the bar and the open fire makes for a cosy evening. Just around the corner from the Woodman is Nuthampstead Shooting Ground. Taking the old east west runway up to the ranges I was reminded that this was once an airfield. I found Martin Barker who told me all about the place..... It’s actually one of only four Olympic shooting ranges in the UK and Martin coaches members of the Olympic team in two shooting disciplines (trap and double trap). If you fancy your hand at shooting you are invited to ring and book. All equipment is provided and coaching can be given to absolute beginners right up to potential Olympians. Stag, hen and corporate events are welcome and children as young as seven can be shown the ropes. Just to prove he could teach anyone, Martin took me to a range and put a shotgun in my hand, with a little guidance I shot two clays in succession!

MODEL RAILWAY EXHIBITION
We make sure they smile when you are away
Royston & Disctrict Model Railway Club is holding it’s annual exhibition on Saturday 15th November at Bassingbourn Village College. The club always try to provide a variety of layouts, from small table top size to some that require a large room. Several layouts will have appeared in articles published by the main model railway magazines they also choose layouts that have trains running most of the time! This year they have a special ‘Thomas’ layout giving children (and possibly adults) a chance to drive a train, maybe for the first time. All the proceeds from this go to the Children in Need charity as do monies raised from the Face painting activity. This year we will display the ‘Great Train Robbery’ diorama and on the back of this the club has selected the Railway Benefit Fund as a nominated charity as it seemed appropriate to include this in the project in the hope of being able to give something back to former railway servants.
Seasonal Treat From December 1st to January 31st buy 5 dog walks between 6am & 9am and get the 6th walk half price!
Subject to weather conditions, the Royston Model engineering group will again be offering sit-on rides behind their lovely model railway steam engines in an outside area.
Only the best for your pet
DOG OF THE MONTH
Tye is a 10 month old male Brindle Lurcher. He has a great nature and is definitely full of beans. He is good with other dogs and is very trainable. An all round lovely boy!
There are ‘trade stands’ offering new and second hand items from small tools to parts and complete kits from small businesses to the latest boxed railway set by the main UK model railway providers, such as Bachmann and Hornby.

C
Growing up in Royston and attending Tannery Drift, Greneway and Meridian, I always had something to do. Whether it was arts and crafts at the kitchen table with my brother, or Graphics lessons at school, I was never bored. It was from this early love of everything creative, that I was eventually guided to a degree in Fine Arts. And once I graduated that allowed me the opportunity to work all over the world, most specifically for Ben Sherman in Australia. But I found from working abroad, that I missed Britain, and the funny little quirks that are quintessentially British. It’s true BRITISH what they say, there’s no place like home. So upon - AND ROYSTON that return home, I set about starting up Victoria - DESIGNER VICTORIA EGGS Eggs Ltd. Everything at Victoria Eggs is British made and British inspired. For us, Made in Britain, isn’t just a brand name, it’s a belief. We believe in supporting manufacturing in the UK, and supporting local economies. Our products are also completely British-centred; from the nautical ranges which will have you reminiscing of summer holidays at the seaside, to our typographic aprons which list everything you need for a proper English dinner. My inspiration comes from everywhere in the UK, from things I see around the capital to favourite past times.
The Listing is delighted to bring you details of specialist, niche businesses operating in the Royston area. You can find out more by contacting each business online but you will certainly find fantastic creative products!

TOP LIP CHALLENGE FOR MEN’S HEALTH COMES TO ROYSTON November is Movember and lips in and around Royston will become hairier over the coming weeks. Movember is an international initiative to raise funds and awareness for research and action on men’s health, particularly prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Life’s too busy for boring workouts. 60 minutes of Pilates, yoga, and kickboxing moves will leave you sweating, smiling, and laughing!
Party Season is fast approaching, so now is the time to get in shape! Come and try a class on us for FREE! Throughout Nov 2014. New students only
This is the new Jazzercise!
One Royston resident growing a moustache throughout November is Chris Lee, motivated by the experience of a friend being diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago. He is also part of a Wimpole parkrunners team This is Chris’s third ‘top lip challenge’ and he explains the purpose behind Movember. “Most men of my age – 59 – are affected by enlarged prostates but many are reluctant to discuss personal health issues – even with friends. As with most cancers, early diagnosis and treatment is vital, so being aware of symptoms is important. Growing a moustache is visible so it raises questions and starts conversations in a natural and informal way.”
To sponsor Chris Lee or join the Wimpole parkrunners team, go to www.mobro.co/leeinroyston or www.uk.movember.com

Hockey
in and around Royston
Hockey was first played on Therfield Heath in 1957 and the big plan now is to play here again, having been away for nearly twenty years. This time the surface will be Astroturf. After the huge fright in 2012 when the MOD announced the closure of Bassingbourn Barracks the senior teams have desperately been looking for alternative venues and were fortunate to find St. Edmunds College near Puckeridge, however when this became unavailable the club had to spread its net further afield and currently play home games, yes home games at St. Ernulf School in St. Neots some 19 miles away! Ultimately our goal is to play hockey again at our home club on Therfield Heath. We are well on our way for an astro turf to be built on what used to be called the “top pitch” above the tennis courts, and we are working with the local authorities to secure this ASAP, subject to the usual planning and the small matter of finding £500k. So of course we are turning to local business for sponsorship and working to maximise funding from government funding and the Hockey association. Improved coaching and player development have been the key measure of success with club coach Bob Biddlecombe working with both squads on tactical play which showed great success, coupled with the assistance of recently qualified coaches Sarah Gourd and Ian Harper along with Denise Underwood we really do punch above our weight. Imagine what we could do if we had a pitch beside our club house! As a club we continue to look to expand and we still look to recruit new players from both senior and junior levels, this reflects the popularity of Hockey in Royston and the excitement generated by the Olympics when over 650k people watched Hockey at the Riverside Stadium. Because

of this success we have started discussions with parents and helpers to run a separate junior committee as it is already a club within a club and needs to have a great deal of focus and energy to keep it running professionally. Our junior sessions are held on the 3G surface at Meridian School on Sunday mornings and started in September. With such a great level of attendance we now run two sessions each of two age groups due to the popularity from both boys and girls from 5YO to 13YO. This has borne fruit in developing some excellent talent and this year we will be attending more club events to further develop the juniors and get them ready for playing in our senior teams. This cannot happen unless you have qualified coaches and enthusiastic helpers and drivers for away matches on every Sunday morning. We introduced “back to hockey” sessions last year in the evenings, which in part has generated a small group of mums who are now the core of the ladies 4th team; these sessions have also given new players and some returning dads an opportunity to give it a try. We continue to train every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday in both St.Neots and Bassingbourn Village College a constant challenge for both players and coaches, not ideal, however it means we keep our fitness and skill levels high to meet the demands of this fast moving game. I will take this opportunity to thank the team behind the scenes who work tirelessly to keep us going and looking forward. They know who they are and I thank them, it makes my life easy due to their commitment.

WHY SMARTPHONES ARE BAD FOR BUSINESS I’m As this year’s series of TV’s The Apprentice gets underway, I am once again disappointed but the terrible business role models the BBC has chosen as contestants (but then it isn’t real, is it?). Rather than talk about that, I’d like to share with you some research I heard this week about how our youngsters are becoming increasingly addicted to their Smartphones. Teenagers are checking social media many times a day and worryingly show clinical signs of anxiety and agitation if separated from their mobile device for any length of time. The kids also said they found it easier to talk to people online than face-to-face – not least because they didn’t need to worry about things like body language, intonation, proper sentences and so on. This shocked me – these things are the real essence of communication, and if our kids are not learning them, the world might find itself saddled with a generation of ineffective communicators very soon. And that would be very challenging at a personal level, as well as being highly damaging for business. Those teenagers obsessively following Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Whatsapp and the rest, also confirmed that they felt unsettled if they didn’t know what was going on within their social networks, and that their lives were somehow poorer as a result I suppose it’s not that dissimilar to needing to keep up with the Soaps or The Apprentice, but it must be kept in perspective. If you want to be a success, in business or in your personal life, you need to be in control – can I encourage you to positively reclaim responsibility for yourself, your business and your future.

THE DAY THE PIRATES CAME TO TOWN ...
167 cutlasses painted, 350 badges made, 300+ tattoos, 400 treasure trails completed...
… altogether a very busy and successful day! Town Manager Geraint Burnell, speaking on behalf of the Royston First organisation, made the following comments: “Anyone who was in Royston one Saturday in early October could have been forgiven for thinking they’d been transported to the Caribbean (aside from the weather!) There were pirates everywhere! We had 34 entries for the fancy dress competition … and they only represented a proportion of those who came dressed-up (including some parents!) Given that each participant in the treasure hunt was accompanied by at least one parent (and quite a number of grandparents too) I would hazard a guess that the pirate day attracted somewhere in the region of 1000 visitors to Royston. Our thanks to Retail Revival for staging such a successful event and to Hitchin Property Trust for lending us their retail unit. Save the date for Ruldolph’s Christmas Trail 13th December 10-4pm at Ruldophs Log Cabin in Fish Hill Square – more details to follow……

ROYSTON DAY NURSERY CELEBRATES ‘GOOD’ OFSTED RATING
Parents who send children to Royston Day Nursery in Lumen Road, can be reassured that their children are getting ‘Good’ quality childcare as stated in the first inspection report by Ofsted. Opened by Jane Roberts in December last year, there are currently 42 children registered. Kyrie Taylor, Manager, and her team run the nursery, which is open from 7.00am until 7.00pm, 51 weeks a year. Royston Day Nursery is situated in the heart of Royston with a garden where children can enjoy trikes and scooters daily and a plot for the children to grow vegetables, which they then eat at nursery. The nursery has excellent links to the A10 and is only a few minutes away from Royston railway station and the town centre. Royston Day Nursery was inspected in August for the first time and was awarded an overall ‘Good’ for the setting. The Ofsted Inspector noted in the report. ‘Parents are very supportive of the care and education children receive; those spoken to at the time of inspection express praise for the nursery’s commitment to continuous improvement and to consistently meeting the needs of all the children.’ Jane Roberts, Nursery owner, said “I am so proud and grateful to Kyrie and the team for the positive and encouraging comments that have been made about our nursery, which have clearly been recognised by Ofsted in our first inspection report. We have worked really hard to make sure each child looks forward to coming to nursery and develops at a pace that is right for them. I am delighted with how much has been achieved in the past ten months since opening.”

We invited the whole of the Icknield Walk First School team to celebrate with us. We had members of staff, the PTA and governors in attendance. When we were inspected in July we were graded as Outstanding in every area. We are very proud of our children for working so hard and impressing the inspectors with the way they enjoy their lessons. The inspectors particularly praised the outstanding teaching and noted that lessons were interactive and motivational for the children. The way all children were cared for and supported in school was also praised and the inspectors commented on the exemplary behaviour that the children exhibited around school. We are proud to be an outstanding school and know that we provide a great place for children to learn and develop!
BUILDING LEARNING POWERS
At Tannery Drift First School this term we are ‘building learning powers’ to help all our children become even better learners. We have purchased some wonderful new puppets - Colin, Polly, Raj & Ruby - who are helping us! The puppets represent the skills of cooperation, perseverance, reflectiveness and resourcefulness which are being encouraged within all lessons and activities. We know that teaching and practising these skills using a common language for learning across the school are the best way to help develop excellent attitudes to work. All our children from Nursery to Year 4 are building their learning powers and we are delighted with the attitudes to learning we are seeing, with everyone doing their best. If you are looking for a Reception place for your child, do come and visit our school on Tuesday 4th November 9.30 - 11.00am or visit

SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING FOR YOUR CHILD Why introduce your child to a second language?
It is very easy to list the benefits of learning a foreign language as an adult. It helps us communicate with people of different cultures; we feel more confident and competent when abroad; it improves our CV and we can meet new people. But, did you know that the benefits for children of learning a second language at an early age are enormous? Early learning of a foreign language for children has been proved to: • Improve their performance in a range of other subjects at school, including English and maths • Enrich and enhance their intellectual growth and mental development • Give them more flexibility in thinking, greater sensitivity to language, excellent pronunciation and a better ear for listening • Improve their understanding of their native language • Give them the chance to communicate with different people whilst increasing their awareness of different cultures • Give them a head start in language learning for later school life and improve their career and job prospects
Boost your child’s confidence
What is the best age?
Recent research has shown that children have a natural ability to learn a language until the age of 8-12 years. Up until this age, a second language is processed and stored in the same place in the brain as the native language, leading to improved fluency and native speaker like pronunciation. As we get older, we learn languages more consciously and this information is then stored in a different part of the brain, meaning that outstanding levels of fluency and pronunciation are much less likely to be achieved. By secondary school the window of opportunity is well and truly closing. Research has shown that by this age children have already lost the ability to hear and reproduce new sounds, which results in a foreign sounding accent. In addition to this, their natural capacity to learn a language almost subconsciously is replaced by the more adult worries about grammar, fluency and pronunciation – all of which inhibit learning.

At the October meeting we were royally entertained by Col Maggs, who runs Cambridge Kung Fu. He spoke to us on “Tai Chi Chuan which he has been teaching for 11 years. We had a wonderful afternoon, he gave a demonstration and we then did some movements ourselves. Some ladies sitting down. The hall was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. In China the over 50’s use Kung Fu as their exercise. It helps with relaxation and coordination and reduces Blood and Stress levels. He then showed us some moves with swords. After tea and home made cakes he judged the competition which was won by Linda Beadle. The first prize in the raffle was won by Shirley Harrington. Our next meeting is on November 13th when Brenda Harley will talk on “How I Became a Reel old Sew and Sew. We meet in the Heritage Hall at 1.45- 4pm. Proceedings began with a play reading followed by a game of Beetles and a thought provoking quiz. Then followed our Annual Rose Bowl competition when all members of the Guild judge the wide range of entries of arts and crafts. The winner of the Rose Bowl Cup this year was Audrey Nightingale for a delicate, knitted baby’s shawl and bonnet. In second place was Christine Lee, for her finely knitted toddler’s cardigan. As usual the standard of all the entries was very high.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is
misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn
up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV Ă€QGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just
the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

PLANTING TREES AND SHRUBS
Now is the time to plant larger trees and shrubs, ready for next year. This is a great time of year to get planting – the soil is still holding a bit of warmth from the late summer and is now more moist and provides good conditions for roots to develop, spread and establish. Furthermore trees, shrubs and woody climbers in particular are often a very good buy at this time of year. A good planting hole or pit is essential, and you should sure that it is at least several inches larger than the current spread of the roots of the tree or shrub that you are about to plant. For years the advice has been that plenty of bulky organic matter should be incorporated in to the hole and the mixture with which you back fill it. Investigations now suggest that this may not necessarily be ideal: make the planting hole too ‘cosy’ and the tree’s roots may be inclined to stay in the hole. In a heavy clay soil a planting hole full of compost may also end up acting as a sump, so when the soil is wet the compost draws more moisture in to the hole, resulting in waterlogged roots. All very logical, but then I would also suggest that if you garden on a very sandy, poor soil, a well-prepared planting pit which includes bulky organic matter such as garden compost will help to reduce the risk of drying out. Similarly, provided the organic matter is incorporated over a good enough sized area on a heavy soil, I think it does help to improve aeration and drainage around tree roots, especially if you incorporate some grit too. Well-rotted manure, garden compost and proprietary bagged compost are all useful in planting holes and if it is largely an improvement in soil texture which you are after, then home-made leafmould is great too.
Next, to tease or not to tease the roots? I’m a teaser every time, having seen thousands of trees fail because their pot-bound roots never moved out in to the soil properly, if at all. Planting depth is important too, so do make sure that you cover the roots, and only the roots, with soil. Even the compost level in the pot is often too deep, so start from scratch if necessary. Laying a straight cane over the top of the planting hole will help you to gauge the correct depth more easily. Then of course there is staking. I suggest only doing this with large trees, apples on very dwarfing rootstocks or if the site is extremely windy as a tree will get tougher and more resilient if given a chance to move around slightly and so form a strong trunk. If you do stake, short stakes at an angle are now regarded as best, and do use a good quality tree tie, properly fitted so that the tree’s bark is not chaffed. Finally, remember that aftercare is essential, regular thorough waterings will be needed during dry weather, especially for the first couple of years after planting. If you don’t get the aftercare right, the plant and all that time and effort can easily be lost. by Pippa Greenwood
