SPOTLIGHT ON

WIMPOLE

ORWELL

The village of Orwell grew around the well that gave it its name and the Roman road that runs to Cambridge runs alongside the village. Listed in the Domesday Book as Ordeuuella, (Ord Wella, in Old English) the village’s name means “spring by a pointed hill. The hill in question may be the natural one which lies behind St. Andrews Church. However, it is anything but pointed. There was once a man-made hill near to where the Church now stands, and an old map shows it as being pointed and that a spring emerged from its foot. The date of this hill is not known, but if it was made for a religious purpose then it may well pre-date the Church. There is an old excavation site for clunch, a traditional building material, in the side of the hill. It is now overgrown with wild flowers and is grazed by is grazed by rare breeds of sheep. “The Clunch Pit provides spectacular views into three different counties, as the pit places you a couple hundred feet above the village below. It also contains two caves. Owned by the Parish Council since 1974 and was designated by English Nature in 1985 as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in recognition of its valuable chalk grassland flora and fauna, which are rare in this part of the country. In addition to its environmental credentials, the Clunch Pit is also used as a village gathering point and for outdoor celebrations. For many years the Pit has hosted an annual village barbeque and the beacon at the top of the pit has been the focal point of a number of special celebration events: (eg: fireworks at the millennium and a beacon to commemorate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee). The village is often a hub for the smaller villages around and plays host to events all year round. There were two pubs listed in the village in 1756, rising to seven by 1882. By 1936 there were still six, but by 1970 only The Chequers remained. It remains the village’s only pub.

www.orwellvillage.org.uk www.orwellshistory.org.uk

Listed as Winepole in the Domesday Book, the parish formerly contained two other small settlements, Wratworth and Whitwell, but both had been absorbed into the single parish by the end of the 13th century, though the manor of Wratworth survived until the 17th century. The name “Wimpole comes from “pool of a man named Wina. The pool in question is that found in Wimpole Park. The main feature of the village is the historic Wimpole Hall (National Trust). This is a working estate still guided by the seasons, with an impressive mansion and Home Farm. The mansion features the breathtaking Yellow Drawing Room and wonderful plunge bath. The fascinating basement corridor offers a glimpse into life below stairs as it used to be. The grounds are open to the public without charge and provide a beautiful setting for walks and picnics all year round. The Folly provides a focus for perambulations though the fields that accommodate rare breed cattle and sheep from time to time. If you venture in to the gardens of the house itself you can take a stroll around the colourful parterre garden and wander through the Pleasure Grounds to the walled garden, abundant with fruit, vegetables and herbaceous borders. Home Farm contrasts the traditional farmyard with the noisy modern piggery and cattle sheds. Children love to see the animals (especially in spring during lambing time) and there are many opportunities to climb and scramble!

The concert has been a regular feature in the build up to Christmas for over 20 years. It has proven to be enduringly popular with audiences over that time giving them the chance to join in and sing a number of their favourite carols and also enjoy many much loved Christmas classic tunes. A visit from Father Christmas with his sack of goodies has also proven a delight for younger members of the audience. There will also be a raffle with Christmas Hampers to be won. The band will again be joined by ‘Singing Aloud’, a local choir, who will be performing a number of songs and helping with the traditional carols. The band will also be playing carols in the Town Centre on the weekends leading up to Christmas raising funds for their new band room. Royston Town Band Christmas Concert with guests ‘Singing Aloud’

McMullen & Sons is delighted to announce that work has commenced on the former ‘The Old Crown’. A comfortable and stylish pub will be created, designed with real fires and quirky detail, harking back to the days of the Post Office. The pub will open in the Spring of 2015 with a new name, an exciting food offer including fresh rotisserie roasted chicken, char-grilled meats, wood fired pizza and whipped ice cream sundaes all professionally delivered with full table service. Food will be offered at great value, with additional discounts applied during week day lunch times. We’re recruiting now, with the intention of taking on 50 team members, both front and back of house. The team will receive comprehensive preopening training and be fully competent in providing locally crafted real ales alongside worldly wines and credible coffee.

Town Crier DECEMBER 2014

Keeping Royston residents in touch with their local council

Sharing memories of the past ROYSTON and District Museum hosted a morning of activities to celebrate a new national event on Sunday 5 October, which honours our older citizens. Visitors were treated to home-made cakes and coffee while they watched film clips from the past 40 years, listened to music from the recent past and were also invited to write down their memories from items in the Reminiscence Corner for display TOWN Mayor Cllr Victoria Hulstrom-Allen has praised the work of volunteers in the community. Speaking at the town council’s civic reception she spoke of the “selfless volunteers” she had met over recent months. The mayor praised their energy and “true grit” in runing organisations. on the museum's memory board. Guests were also able to watch the Royston Crow printing press at work and had the opportunity to have a turn themselves and take home the results. Volunteers from the museum and Royston town councillors were on hand to help and entertain and an enjoyable time was had by all. The event was sponsored by Johnson Matthey plc and we would like to thank it and the museum for giving us this opportunity to show our appreciation for Royston's older residents.

Sign of the times Town twinning celebrates 40 years of German link A SPECIAL Blue Plaque has been handed over to the Burgermeister of Grossalmerode to mark the 40th anniversary of twinning with the German town. And in return Royston Town Council received a hugh road sign spelling out the distance between the two towns. Both Royston’s mayor Councillor Victoria Hulstrom-Allen and Burgermeister Andreas Nickel said they were proud of the towntwinning partnership. But Herr Nickel said: “The next 10 years are important. We need to encourage younger people to get involved,” he said. Earlier town-twinning chairman Paul Rydon spoke of 40 years of co-operation. He said town-twinning “enriches lives” and to celebrate 40 years shows “it has all been worthwhile”.

Seated around the table, clockwise, are Town Clerk, Susan Thornton-Bjork, Peter Burt, Lindsay Davidson, Les Baker, Rod Kennedy, Mark Hughes, Ben Lewis, Mike Harrison, John Davison and F John Smith. ROYSTON MAYOR COUNCILLOR VICTORIA HULSTROM-ALLEN AND THE COUNCILLORS AND STAFF OF ROYSTON TOWN COUNCIL WISH ALL OUR RESIDENTS A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR

Town Crier Awards in Royston in Bloom competition IN September the Royston in Bloom committee presented the annual awards for the 2014 Royston in Bloom Competition. A packed town hall saw the worthy winners of the three categories receive their prizes and certificates from town mayor Cllr Victoria Hulstrom-Allen. The winners were Jeanette and Bill Hawkins (Best Front Garden), Richard Cox House (Best kept street or community area) and Chris Wallis (Best Kept Allotment). The tallest sunflower competition was won by Susan Shipp at

a height of 3.23m. Well done and many congratulations to all our winners and entrants for 2014. Next year we hope to introduce a themed entry for Royston schools and we will be visiting all our local schools to discuss this further. The Royston in Bloom team also plans to carry out maintenance work on the Green Walk and Stile Plantations with the help of the Johnson Matthey community volunteers. It is looking, too, at further planting at Royston railway station.

ROYSTON TOWN MAYOR’S COMMUNITY TRUST FUND DON’T forget to apply for an award from the Mayor's Community Trust Fund if your community organisation needs help for either the setting up of a new project, event or capital scheme, which will be beneficial to the residents of Royston. Application for grants will open on 2 January 2015 and the closing date for an application is 16 February 2015.

Grants will be presented at the annual town meeting in March 2015. Application forms can be obtained from the town hall office or from the website at www.roystontowncouncil.gov.uk We look forward to helping our many excellent local groups and organisations again in 2015

DELICIOUS LOCAL TURKEYS

Business Profile

Great quality, delicious tasting turkey offered to you by Black Barn Turkeys The farm has always considered the way the turkeys are grown as it’s key to success. By using animal friendly techniques such as rearing turkeys in open sided spacious barns, with plenty of fresh air and grassy paddocks in which to roam, they are able to offer this premium product far superior to the supermarket and fresh from the farm gate. They select their turkeys from slow growing breeds which produce a variation in sizes from 8lb - 25lb at full maturity, to offer the customer a size to suit their table. They are fed on a natural cereal diet free from growth promoters and antibiotics. Traditional hand plucking and finishing methods, as well as hanging for a minimum of seven days, offer an unrivalled level of both texture and flavour. The Burlton family has been rearing turkeys at Valley Farm, Meldreth since 1966, when father, Tony, bought 5 acres of land and started delivering a few turkeys at Christmas on his butchers bike. Valley Farm is still a hands on family affair, now run by Tony’s sons Micheal and Andrew. Whether you are choosing a Black Barn free range bronze turkey or a traditional barn reared turkey, both would make a delicious centre piece for your festive table and ensure your Christmas is complete.

RUDOLPH’S CHRISTMAS TRAIL S IT’ EE IN FRTO JOIN

h’s

Saturday December 13th will see Rudolph and Santa back in Royston to host a trail of clues around the town centre for children to follow. Rudolph and Santa will issue entry forms to children at the Log cabin on Fish Hill Square. The game is for the children to follow the clues to find reindeer in the windows of shops in the High Street, John Street, Angel Pavement and Market Hill. At each shop displaying a reindeer a piece of Lego can be claimed. With all 10 pieces discovered, the child builds a model which they show to Santa in return for a further present. Representing Royston First, Town Manager Geraint Burnell stated the following:

GREAT FAMILY “We are repeating the successful FUN! formula from last year where over

150 children took-up our challenge. Assemble the Lego model Our hope is that children will remain (which you get to keep) town absorbed in this task allowing Show it to SantaChristmas and parents to do a little m receive a gift! shopping! Royston is particularly well suited RECEIVE for a nice, relaxed present buying experience. We hope local families GREAT will come down for a morning or GIFTS afternoon of free entertainment for the kids and help support our town centre”.

Get your friends or family together, wrap up warm, and take in Christmas markets and carol singers, tread through winter forests or roam over snow-covered hills. The Festival of Winter Walks is open to everyone. There are short fun walks that children will love; leisurely strolls for people new to walking; and longer walks for those that want a good leg-stretch over the Christmas break. If you enjoy one of the Festival walks, why not consider joining some walks on a more regular basis? David Allard (01763 242677) of the Royston Ramblers says they have an all-day walk every Sunday, normally 8 miles or longer and morning walks on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings normally 5-7 miles. In the summer (end of April to end of August) there are also evening walks usually about 3 miles. A poster listing the walks taking place shortly can usually be found in Royston library and museum. You’ll find the walks by going to

www.ramblers-herts-northmiddlesex.org.uk

and clicking onto groups then on to Royston or David can provide you with a printed programme. You may come on three walks before deciding to join. It is recommended that you telephone the leader before coming on your first walk.

For details of local walks please see our What’s On Section www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/festival-of-winter-walks 20th December to 4th January 2015

YOGA IS FOR EVERYONE

Yoga is for everybody - including individuals living with mobility impairments, such as partial or total paralysis, amputation, spinal cord injury, arthritis, and cerebral palsy, among many other conditions. Adaptive yoga is an exploration of the way the benefits of a traditional yoga practice can be experienced by everybody. It is not the act of making a body fit a pose, it is the art of capturing the essence of the pose - how it makes us feel, and learning together how to translate that essence into something tangible and beneficial for everybody. That’s why Jo will be running classes specialising in Adaptive Yoga alongside her general classes. These begin at Coombes Community Centre, on Tuesday 13th January from 4:30 - 6:00pm, £8.50 per 90 min class. www.adaptiveyogashak.com

Contract Bridge

With five bridge clubs meeting regularly in the local area it is fair to say that it is a popular game! Contract bridge, or simply bridge, is a trick-taking game using a standard 52-card deck. Two pairs of players compete with partners sitting opposite each other around a table. The Royston area is not alone with millions of people playing bridge worldwide in clubs, tournaments, online and with friends at home, making it one of the world’s most popular card games. The World Bridge Federation is the governing body for international competitive bridge and has its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. Competition is serious - there is even an anti-doping policy! The game consists of several deals each progressing through four phases: dealing the cards, the auction (also referred to as bidding), playing the cards, and scoring the results. However, most club and tournament play involves some variant of duplicate bridge, where the cards are not re-dealt on each occasion, the same deal being played by two or more different sets of players to enable comparative scoring. If this sounds as complicated to you as it does to me and you are interested in finding out more, why not contact one of our friendly local clubs? Royston Contract Bridge Club A friendly club seeks new members. Beginners welcome. When? Thursday 7-10pm Where? Chess

Chess is perhaps a little less mysterious with many of us having learnt as children - but a quick refresher would probably be needed to jog our memories before we could play a game (or teach or own children!) Chess is one of the world’s most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide in homes, parks, clubs, online, by correspondence, and in tournaments. Each player begins the game with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each of the six piece types moves differently. The objective is to ‘checkmate’ the opponent’s king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture. To this end, a player’s pieces are used to attack and capture the opponent’s pieces, while supporting their own. In addition to checkmate, the game can be won by voluntary resignation by the opponent, which typically occurs when too much material is lost, or if checkmate appears unavoidable (or if I’m bored with playing with my son!) Royston Chess Club All levels novice to county standard. 4 teams in Herts League (KO winners 2014), 2 teams in Cambs League (Champions 2012/3/4), 1 team in local league. Also friendly games, competitions & training When? Mondays from 7.45pm (Sept-Jun) Where? Conservative Club, Royston Contact: Kevin Clark 01763 243370 or kevin.clark54@btinternet.com

BUSINESS LESSON FROM KUNG FU? Experience. What is it? We’ve talked about it before – it isn’t just what events happen to you, it’s what you learn from them, how they change you. Working in the NHS for the last six months has been a great experience for me. I like to learn, I like to feel that I’m progressing – how about you? Do you like to learn new things? Our kids learn every day at school, but as grown-ups, we’re much less receptive. There’s lots of learning out there, but sometimes we don’t see it – and sometimes we don’t want to see it. Maybe we tell ourselves we’re too busy, maybe we don’t want to expose ourselves to things we can’t do, maybe we weren’t looking. What’s your excuse? I was thinking about this while watching a kung-fu class at the weekend where the instructor was quietly teaching the class a new routine. Because she was speaking softly, the kids needed to pay attention or they might miss the instruction – and it worked! (There’s a lesson there for managers everywhere – did you spot it?) ‘All you need to do,’ She softly told the attentive group, ‘is to look, and listen.’ That rang true for me too – as grown-ups, we’re so often caught up in the now, that we only see what we expect to see - we forget to look and listen for the new things, we forget to see the useful learning that’s out there for all of us. So why does this matter? Well apart from personal pride and pleasure at learning new things, if you don’t grow or progress, you are simply standing still. And if you’re standing still while others are learning and progressing (be they your classmates, your competitors or your sport buddies), then you’re effectively going backwards.

MUSICAL INITIATIVES NITIATIVES FOR CHILDREN HOME & AWAY

Creative Royston has helped make Christmas come early for two sets of children separated by two continents and more than 4000 miles. On 13th December thirty budding young musicians will be exhibiting their musical talents in Royston thanks to an initiative launched at this year’s Royston’s Arts Festival. The First Access initiative was set up by Hertfordshire Music Service in order to give every Year 4 pupil the chance to learn a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument for free on a Saturday morning. Sue Pettitt, Head of Royston Music School, said, ‘In just the first four weeks the students mastered eight tunes and started to learn to read music and play in an ensemble.’ Creative Royston is providing funding for the hire of the venue for the band’s first concert which takes place on 13th December, 10.30am12noon at Meridian School. Entry is not ticketed, free and all are welcome. Another special concert will take place a week later in Uganda thanks to more than £800 raised at an event featuring Alison Balsom, the internationally acclaimed trumpeter, during Royston Arts Festival 2014. The money was donated to ‘Brass for Africa’, a charity that sets out to transform young lives and communities in the poorest areas of Africa through music and learning. Jim Trott, Brass for Africa director, said, ‘We have hired a venue and will have over 200 of our children performing a Christmas concert, these are kids from the 3 orphanages and the rehabilitation centre where we have music tuition. This will be a chance for our young musicians to showcase their talents and hard work to the local community and dignitaries - followed by a party for the children which will include a special Christmas meal and dancing! The funds also cover a Brass for Africa band T shirt which they will wear with pride.’ He continued, ‘Creative Royston’s support is making a tangible and real difference to the lives of these children.’ For more details about Brass for Africa visit www.BrassforAfrica.com Find out more about Creative Royston at www.CreativeRoyston.org

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is

misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn

up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV Ă€QGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just

the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

1ST ANNIVERSARY OF COMMUNITY BREAKFAST

The Royston Area Community Breakfast is now one year old and had a very vibrant meeting at which Geoff Kavanagh, Royston Scout District Commissioner, gave a very lively and informative presentation about the local scouting organisation. The community breakfast is a mutual help, support and ideas sharing forum for those who are active in the Royston and District community. Anyone who has any interest whatsoever in community events is welcome. We meet the second Friday of every month at 7.30am in The Old Bull Inn. We usually have a speaker talking about a topic of local interest and always have a discussion of forthcoming local events and frequently find that we can support each other. Over the first year the breakfast has had numerous excellent presentations, many of which show just how much is going on in Royston and what a great community spirit there is. If you are interested in joining us please contact us by email at communitybreakfast@roystondiary.info
