Welcome

Next Deadline

There is so much going on this summer! Every weekend there is a fete or fair or event to go to, so have a look in the What’s On section and plan your month! There are lots of things to do for all our school age children who will be eagerly awaiting the start of six weeks of freedom!

Friday 13th July

We are looking forward to al fresco dining - at home with a BBQ or at one of our lovely pubs in town or in the villages. We may even pack the odd picnic to take on a walk or on a bike ride. If you are out and about look out for Larkspur which is July’s flower in some traditions. Its star like blue flowers are a delight. Wishing you a fantastic month,

Healthy baked Broccoli Bites

It’s good to make sure your child has a balanced diet as it has a positive impact on physical and mental health and wellbeing. Ingredients: • 340g uncooked or frozen broccoli • 1 large egg • 35g onion • 45g cheddar cheese • 85g breadcrumbs • 2 tablespoons parsley • Pinch of black pepper 1. Preheat the oven to 200oC. Grease a baking sheet with a thin layer of oil or line with parchment paper. 2. Put the broccoli in boiling water for 1 minute then plunge in a bowl of ice cold water. Drain well. 3. Chop the broccoli finely and mix with the egg, onions, cheddar, breadcrumbs and seasoning. Scoop 2 tablespoons of mix and using your hands gently press between your hands to shape. Wash your hands between every few bites to prevent from sticking. Next place the bites onto a baking sheet. 4. Bake for 18-20 minutes turning halfway, until golden brown and crispy. Enjoy.

There’s going to be a lot of mischief going on when the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge launches in Hertfordshire libraries this year! To celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the much-loved Beano, this year’s challenge is called Mischief Makers, and will centre round the adventures of the most infamous mischief makers of them all – Dennis and Gnasher! Once again, Hertfordshire Libraries are challenging children to read six library books over the summer and return to the library to tell our staff all about them. They can read anything, including story books, fact books, talking books, and even e-books (available to download for free from our e-library). As part of this year’s challenge, children will use a map of Beanotown to search for a mysterious buried treasure. For each book that they report back on, they’ll collect smelly stickers that provide clues to the treasure’s location. Dennis and Gnasher will be on hand to

Professional Curtains & Blinds with the personal touch Our package includes: • Home Selection • Free Measuring & Quotation • Friendly & Impartial Design Advice See our vast and extensive range at www.newdawnblinds.co.uk or call 01763 243 894

help them solve these clues, along with their friends Pie Face, Rubi and JJ! The challenge is free to take part in – all children need to do is visit their local library from 14th July to collect a starter pack, while stocks last, and complete their six books before 8th September. They can also visit www.mischiefmakers.org.uk for more activities and games. A huge success with Hertfordshire families year after year, the Summer Reading Challenge is the perfect way to share books together and spark a lifelong love of reading for pleasure. As one parent commented, ‘My son really enjoyed the Summer Reading Challenge 2017; he loved coming to talk to the staff and volunteers about the books he’d read, and enjoyed collecting the stickers. He is already excited for the Summer Reading Challenge 2018 and can’t wait to get started!’

Home & Garden

Think Garden, Think Richard

y summer selection Garden Focus... early Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott To continue my series of articles for 2018, designing with plants, this month I am going to look at midsummer hardy perennials, shrub and grass selection. Here a few things to consider: Drifts of the same plant helps to extend the interest and add colour too. Blues and purples look great drifted through a hardy perennial border. The large purple fennel Foeniculum vulgare ‘Purpureum’ drifting through smaller perennials adds height and pretty, fluffy foliage interest. Other tall drifters could be Agastache ‘Black Adder’ or Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Fascination’ with spires of blue and purple flowers they give good vertical form to a border. It is not all about height. A drifting plant could be a filler such as Geranium ‘Wargrave Pink’ or Alchemilla mollis.

spaces for a contemporary feel smaller grasses such as Stipa tenuissima ‘Ponies Tails’ or Pennisetum alopecuroides work well. On a bigger stage with the back drop of a landscape beyond the garden they really come into their own. My plant hero Piet Oudolf is a master in the use of grasses and hardy perennials. I am currently enjoying using Miscanthus sinensis ‘Marlepartus’and Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’. Mixed borders are the modern way to get a balance of shrub and flower. Research shrub selection carefully to avoid big shrubs dominating. I love to use box and lavender in my garden designs as they make great mound forming shape. For vertical interest I would add shrub roses such as Rosa ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ and then in fill with hardy perennials. This is a way to mix shrubs and flowers. It is traditional whereas the naturalistic plant movement is more modern.

Rhythm and repetition of plants is great to draw the eye. This is different to drifting as it is repetition of a plant such as Verbena For more in depth plant advice or garden design help please get in touch bonariensis ‘Lolipop’ or a grass such as Miscanthus sinensis ‘Marlepartus’.Our eye is looking to make sense of what we see, so a repeated plant helps draw the eye. This is really helpful to the designer to create cohesion between garden rooms. The mood GARDEN DESIGN & BUILD of a space may be different but repeating plants help to make a link. Why not use the quintessential English summer shrub Philadelphus ‘Belle E’toile’. Its beautiful white flowers and scent stand up to any rose.

richardarnott.com

Colour combinations will give the planting extra interest especially if deliberate. There are many famous gardens that choose a colour theme to make a strong statement. Think white border, think Sissinghurst! I have tended to favour greens, blues, purples, pinks and white, but by adding a splash of red with something like Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Fire Tail’ or Penstemon ‘Chester Scarlet’ or Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ you make a strong contrast. Using grasses imaginatively is a great way to add interest and adding the dynamic of movement too. They work really well as drifters and repeaters to give a naturalistic feel. Think about context too. In smaller 14

wi am

In June WI AM held their outing to Hughenden Manor. The manor was the much loved home of Benjamin Disraeli from 1848 to 1881. Disraeli was Queen Victoria’s favourite prime minster and there is an exhibition of gifts she gave to him. The formal gardens have been recreated based on the designs of Mary Anne Disraeli. There are stunning views of the surrounding parkland and gardens. In 2004 it was discovered that there was a secret map-making base at Hughenden during the Second World War. The operation was code named Hillside and there is an exhibition with artefacts and recollections of the base in the cellar. For more details please contact Pat Morritt 01763 661627

A Cracked Voices Story Those who wait | Servandus

Servandus son of the Spaniard willingly fulfilled his vow to the goddess Many hundreds of miles from home, one man makes his offering to Senuna. We know nothing more than his name, which means both the person who watches over things and the preserver. His voice has long been silenced. In 2002 a metal detector bleeps. Alan Meek

‘Dea Senuna’ Book Launch and Celebration The British Museum has produced a very full, illustrated book about Ashwell’s very own Roman Goddess Senuna, which includes information never published before.

has chanced upon a horde of votive gifts. Carefully, he disinters Servandus’s offering and the goddess’s cracked and broken statuette from its hiding place at Ashwell End. Senuna has not seen light of day for sixteen hundred years. Some say she is the Celtic equivalent of Roman Minerva, but her history is buried deep…a mystery, just like Servandus.

Royston Model Aircraft Club Interested in Flying?

Our club, The Royston & District Model Aircraft Club (RMAC) was first formed in the 1970’s and is fully affiliated to the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) The primary interest of club members is radio-control models with sports, scale, fun-fly, aerobatic and glider models all being flown regularly. Radio control electric powered flight is also very popular within the club. The Club has approximately 50 members and welcomes beginners and fliers of all ages. We also provide and encourage tuition for novice pilots which is freely available from our experienced club instructors. If you are a novice, you are encouraged to start with a basic powered trainer, which is usually a high wing aircraft with control on rudder, elevator, aileron and throttle. It is stable in flight thus

giving the novice time to correct any mistakes before any damage can be sustained. Once you have learnt to fly, you can really start to enjoy the hobby – scale modelling, aerobatics, biplanes will all be within your grasp. Club membership in conjunction with the BMFA also includes third party liability insurance, essential if you are going to fly models. The club and BMFA also run a flying achievement scheme designed to encourage safe flying and progression of flying skills within the sport. If you are interested in becoming a member or would just like to pop along to the field & find out more, then please phone the club secretary.

Miller Magic with Opus Tickets for our next concert this month are going fast and numbers are restricted due to the bigger space given to dancing, so hurry and get your tickets now.

Those of you that know the history of the band will be aware that we started life around 20 years ago as a 1940s band playing music exclusively from the icons of that era: Glenn Miller; Duke Ellington; Ted Heath and all the other great bands from that time. It’s only in the last six or seven years that we have widened our repertoire to include all of the music that we play today. In order not to forget our roots we have decided that now is a good time to dust off the “Suntans” and bring you a concert of classic numbers from The Glenn Miller Orchestra. We will be playing well known favourites such as: In The Mood; American Patrol; Little Brown Jug etc, plus some of the less played, but equally well known numbers such as : Tail End Charlie and Flying Home. And that’s not all folks! For this concert we will be joined by Jess Radcliffe and The Doodlebugs. Jess is a

professional singer and instrumentalist who formed the Doodlebugs as part of her university project five years ago. The group’s repertoire is based around the close harmony vocals of The Andrews Sisters. So it will be a true concert from the 1940s! A beer & wine pay bar will accompany our usual buffet supper and to complete the authenticity of the evening we hope that you will enter into the spirit of the occasion and come along in your best 1940s outfit, although it’s not mandatory! Curwens Art Exhibition You are invited to preview the works of Graham Rayner, Amy Carter and Sue Sanders. Graham Rayner

I have enjoyed working with wood for most of my life, and I clearly remember receiving my first wood working tools at the age of just four years old. I design and make unique pieces of hand crafted bespoke furniture and enjoy making pieces with elegant proportions in interesting timbers. I repair and restore heirloom furniture, and I also make a range of clocks, boxes and turned work, which will be available to view at the Curwens gallery. Amy Carter I reignited my childhood passion for painting in 2016. Since then I have been experimenting and refining my style. My work

includes large oil paintings of bold flowers. ‘I try to capture the natural beauty of the flowers sometimes painting them after they have started to wilt and decay, this gives a moody feel to the work. Sue Sanders I create landscape and animal portraits to commission. I have run an after school art club for many years, and I do landscape workshops for school children. I also design and paint scenery sets for our annual pantomime. My current work is connected to wordplay and I will be displaying these images as small framed monoprints. I also explore the textures, markings and light of the agricultural landscape near my home, painting in both acrylic and oils

MUSEUM MUSINGS: Racing Through Royston’s History

We’ve recently been researching the history of horse racing in Royston. You might have seen a blue plaque on the Barn in Upper King Street. This was the site of stables that backed onto the heath. People would often see horses being taken out across the heath. One person who was based at those stables was Willie Stephenson. He was a successful horse trainer with many friends in the town. Do you remember him? He was the first horse trainer in over 200 years of racing in Royston to win both the Derby and Grand National. And only the third trainer ever to do this! He won the Derby with Arctic Prince in 1951 and the Grand National with Oxo in 1959. The Royston Crow reported on

Oxo’s win. The article speaks highly of Willie and ponders why he was so successful when previous Royston horse trainers hadn’t been. They answer by highlighting his natural skill of being an excellent judge of horses as well as his understanding of how much training was needed. Not too much and not too little. Willie was described at going about his training “without fuss and a lot of ballyhoo.”

Reports after Arctic Prince’s win tell of the whole town celebrating. It was noted that Willie and a few friends held a private celebration at the Bull Hotel. There’s so much to uncover about racing in Royston so please get in touch with your own memories at enquiries@roystonmuseum.org.uk www.roystonmuseum.org.uk

Leisure From Tallulah’s Kitchen Strawberry Pimms & Shortbread Cheesecake Hello my fellow foodies... And welcome to July’s edition of The Listing. This month I am excited to share with you a recipe that combines three of my most favourite foods and the quintessential drink of English summer days. This cheesecake recipe is perfect for lazy summer barbecues and picnics. I do love a good baked cheesecake and I have been working on this one for quite a while, I do hope you enjoy it. You will need A 20 cm non stick baking tin, parchment lined loose bottomed would be best, but if you don’t have one line a regular tin with parchment paper but leave plenty of extra paper around the outside so you can lift and remove the cheesecake easily. For the base 300g shortbread biscuits 100g melted butter For the filling 450g full fat cream cheese 100g caster sugar The finely grated zest of one lemon and one orange 60ml of puréed strawberries 60ml Pimms 2tbsp double cream 2 eggs from happy and healthy free running hens 25g cornflour Extra whipped cream and strawberries for garnishing

cornflour and stir everything together. Now, beat in the eggs one at a time and pour the resulting mixture on top of the shortbread base. Smooth over the top and pop into the oven for 25-30 min at 170°C or until very lightly coloured on top with a tiny bit of “wobble” in the centre. When you are happy your cheesecake has got to this stage, turn off the oven and leave to cool in the oven for at least an hour. Resist the temptation to open the door as this may cause cracking across the top. After cooling in the oven, wrap the cheesecake in cling film and place in the fridge for at least 4 hours - overnight would be best as the full flavour and texture develop with time. When you are ready to serve, remove the cheesecake from the tin and cut into the desired size portions. (I cut 4x4 from my square tin, giving me 16 “polite” sized portions.) Serve with a swirl of piped cream and a fresh strawberry on top. For those occasions where a little more “showing off” is required why not finely dice strawberries and a little cucumber and steep in neat Pimms for an hour and then serve alongside the cheesecake... the choice, dear reader, as always is yours! Until next time my fellow foodies...

Tallulah Le Fey x

Let us begin by making the base. Take the shortbread biscuits and pop them into a clean bag and using your rolling pin “bash” them to the consistency of fine sand. Perhaps you may prefer to use a food processor and that’s good too although you won’t get to work your upper arm muscles or any frustrations you might have! Next pour in the melted butter and mix until the two ingredients are thoroughly combined. Now pour the buttery biscuit loveliness into the lined tin and press down flat and even, I find a serving spoon works well. Cover this and pop into the fridge to chill and firm up for at least half an hour. Now on with the filling. In your mixer beat together the cream cheese and sugar until light and fluffy. Next, add in the strawberry purée, finely grated zests, Pimms, cream and

July News

From the Conservators of Therfield Heath and Greens

Therfield Heath Chalkhill Blue supports an incredible diversity of rare flowers and insects. In early June, we found a shieldbug that has not been recorded in Hertfordshire before. In July, the Chalkhill Blue butterfly will be on the wing – a butterfly that is dependent not only on its larval foodplant (Horseshoe Vetch) but also on ants to look after it during its underground chrysalis phase. The Heath is a nationally important nature reserve - so please make sure that you take all your litter home. It costs £7,500 a year just to provide the rubbish bins and have them emptied.

Making your own Ice Cream

James Day, Head Chef at the award-winning Belle Freehouse in Bassingbourn shares his ice cream recipe. The ingredients you will need; 300ml full fat milk 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways (vanilla paste will work just as well) 3 medium egg yolks 75g golden caster sugar 300ml double cream Firstly, you will need to boil your milk, cream and vanilla. In the meantime whip your egg yolk and sugar until it reaches ribbon stage. The Belle Freehouse and Restaurant North End, Bassingbourn, SG8 5NZ www.thebellefreehouse.co.uk 01763 250921

Dark Lane Forge “You can draw it, I can make it”

Gently boil the milk, cream and vanilla together in a pan. Whilst it’s heating, beat the egg yolk and sugar together until it leaves ribbons when you remove the whisk. Once the cream and milk mixture has boiled and cooled, slowly pour it into your egg and sugar mix, stirring until it is fully incorporated. Add your mixture to your ice cream machine and churn until set. You can use this vanilla recipe as a base recipe and add other ingredients such as a strawberry or raspberry purée. Be sure to keep a balance of flavours so that the added fruit doesn’t overpower the vanilla cream.

RusseLl DavEy Local butcher Russell Davey has long been a businessman in the area. His popular shop is at Fieldgate Nurseries in Meldreth. With over 40 years in the trade as man and boy there’s not much he doesn’t know about quality meat. We found out a little about him. Where do you live? I was brought up in Royston but have lived in Meldreth since 1981. Tell us about your favourite local shop... I have two very good local shops. Fieldgate Nurseries stocks fresh local products and One Stop in Meldreth is open from 7am -10pm, 364 days a year. It also offers my banking facilities. Describe a perfect Sunday Having a great round of golf, watching The Gunners win and roast dinner with my family What is your favourite book? Why is it special to you? I don’t have time to read books! What was the last film you watched? Did you enjoy it? I generally only watch films on plane journeys but I love the James Bond films. What are you looking forward to in July? A very busy catering and BBQ season! Hopefully we will have some nice sunshine and England will win in Russia. What is the best advice you have ever been given? That the first deal is the best deal! Tell us what you love about your job Even after over 40 years as a local

butcher we are always meeting new people. Where are you hoping to go on holiday this year? I visited St Lucia early this year and could not believe how the Island had changed since I last went 38 years ago. I loved the locals and their character. I am hoping to revisit South Africa later in the year - it will be my fifth tour of such a fantastic country. What is your signature dish? I love to BBQ and try out different techniques. Tell us something about you that will surprise us! I was once very fit and athletic and loved to play Rugby. I also represented the East Anglia region at swimming... Royston Rockets BMX Club is growing! With over 30 years of Club history Royston Rockets BMX Club is going from strength to strength with many riders progressing to Regional and National Level and to the British Championships. The current committee has steadily built the club and the dedicated coaching team have been improving the riding skills of all who ride with us. The aim is for riders to ride at a competitive level, but also to retain fitness levels and have fun! The membership has steadily grown to over 100 riders, and the club extends a warm welcome to people of all ages and abilities - we have members from four to 65 years of age. Ever wanted to try BMX racing? We are offering a taster session on Saturday 14th July, 2018 at 1pm – a small number of loan bikes and helmets are available and our coaches will be on hand to assist and guide you through the first stages. The club members will join us for their Saturday track session from 2pm. This session is free of charge and gives you the opportunity to try riding, possibly for the first time. We will have tea and coffee available for Mums and Dads too! In terms of training – we train on Tuesday evenings from around 6pm and Saturday afternoons from 2pm. Club Coaching happens every other Tuesday and on the last Saturday of every month. Members are split by experience / age level– dependant on level of riding

ability and it is a great opportunity to work on techniques and racing styles. We focus on being a family orientated club with many whole families taking part in racing. Recently a double Olympic rider came to Royston and trained with our youngsters which was motivational for them and let them see what is possible. We are looking to increase our membership and we always welcome support from non-members in roles such as assisting in the kitchen at events or marshalling / line judges. We have recently received planning permission for a sprint track following some fund raising and there will also be some further development at the track in the next few weeks. For further information about BMX riding at Royston Rockets please visit www.roystonrockets.co.uk or find us on Facebook under Royston Rockets. Sun Safety

Stay safe and avoiding getting a ‘lobster like’ tan this summer by following some of my simple tips. Keep hydrated - drinking water is essential as it stops you and your skin from getting dehydrated. Sun cream - make sure you choose a suncream with at least SPF 15 to protect from UVB and at least 4 star rating for UVA protection. When choosing a foundation also pick one with a SPF. Remember higher SPF does not mean you can go longer before re applying. If you do burn take a cool shower and make sure you use an after sun. I prefer ones containing aloe vera!

WI PM We meet every month in Fellowship Hall next to the Picture Palace and are very happy to welcome new members. We have groups meeting for a variety of interests – walks, (pictured here is the view of Wimpole Folly taken on one of our favourites), books, playing ukulele and getting together for lunch. We have Coffee Mornings, Afternoon Teas and Theatre trips. We stroll around gardens and visit museums. At every meeting there is a light-hearted competition and an interesting speaker. Our members have the opportunity to attend classes at Denman College on a breath-taking range of subjects taught by the best of tutors. But perhaps most important of all, WI members make friends for life. Our next meeting will be in September. To learn a bit more about us call Eunice, 01763 231658 or Jean, 01763 245958

Professional Six business tips Being an entrepreneur means that you’ll often blaze your own trail – but you’ll sometimes face moments of doubt and uncertainty and suffer sleepless nights. Try these six tips if you are a running a business – or managing an international football team! 1. Keep the big vision in sight Never forgetting ‘where you’re trying to get to’ helps keep your business on course. It may not always be the course you imagined, but focussing on the destination is vital. 2. Persevere What should go hand-in-hand with a big vision is the perseverance you need to keep moving forward. Don’t give up. When things get challenging, you have to commit yourself to moving forward, overcoming the fear surrounding the next steps. 3. Make a plan, but be flexible Every business needs plans – but they shouldn’t be big.A simple business plan, with an accompanying marketing outline

will do. Map out the major landmarks of the road ahead and break the journey into important metrics so you can track your progress. 4.Recognise your expertise Don’t try to be all things for all aspects of your business – if you want to do everything, get a job as a handyman. Use contractors when you need to and focus your strengths on doing what you do best – and making the money! 5. Don’t burn out Your health is literally the most important thing in your life. When your body gives out, you’re done, so take good care of yourself. 6. Keep your sense of humour Finally, try to laugh more and stress less. It strengthens your emotional and mental wellbeing, keeps people from getting under your skin and keeps you cool and collected. It also makes you more fun to be around! Let me know how you get on! julian@julianberry.co.uk
