The event is the Club’s biggest fundraiser. After expenses, all the money from gate receipts, the Tombola and donations by generous sponsors, plus stall rentals, goes to good causes. This year’s major recipient, the choice of Club President David Blundell, is Acorn House, which offers accommodation to the families of sick children receiving treatment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The Club reckons that since they took over in 2000, the event has raised around £100,000 for charity. “That’s a lot of money for some excellent causes, while giving thousands of people a lot of fun.” Royston Rotary Kite Festival, The Heath, Sunday 5th August, 10.30am - 4.30pm

Meet and eat ClUB A ‘Meet and Eat’ club in Royston is inviting older people to make and share a delicious meal together once a week. The ‘Meet and Eat’ aims to bring older people together through a shared love of food. Participants can get involved in as much or as little as they like during the sessions, from meal preparation and cooking, to socialising and savouring the delicious two course meals that are created and served. The sessions take place every Thursday and are open to all older people in Royston and the surrounding area. Each meal costs £3. Meet and Eat in Royston is a partnership initiative between North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) and settle, formerly known as North Hertfordshire Homes. Cllr Tony Hunter, NHDC’s Executive Member for Community Engagement said, “This is a wonderful idea that brings together older residents from the local area who may not have met before. It gives people the opportunity to bond

and make friends in an informal setting and we wish it well in the future.” Wendy, who attends the group said: “It’s good fun. It’s a nice group and everyone has a laugh. Rotary Club of ROyston Where can you find a bunch of people who run Royston’s biggest annual charity fund-raiser, a memory café, a swimathon, a major musical event and a technology competition for the town’s schools, provide Santas for a big retail outlet, help to eradicate polio, support skills training for women in Africa, enjoy monthly rambles and weekends away, get together to meet and eat every week, and have been behaving this way for 56 years? It can only be the Rotary Club of Royston, part of Rotary International, which boasts 1.2 million members in 35,000 clubs like ours across the globe. Through Rotary clubs, people from all continents and cultures come together to exchange ideas, and form friendships and professional connections while making a difference in their backyards and around the world. All of which perhaps sounds a little grand and solemn. Not so! We are local men and women (membership is around 35) from a variety of personal and professional backgrounds, and we enjoy a lively social life together. Our weekly meetings are noisy, friendly affairs where we discuss our plans, report on what we’ve achieved, and often listen to speakers on a wide range of topics. The old vision of Rotary as a collection of besuited local businessmen (males only in those days, of course) has long gone. The suits and ties were abandoned years ago, and we don’t just admit women; we welcome them enthusiastically. Indeed, we’ve already had two lady Presidents, and a third is due soon.

We’re strong because our roots are here in Royston, and much of our impact is at local level, but with the back-up of our national and international organisation, we can punch way above our weight. For example, the money we raise to support local or international projects can often be doubled by Rotary International’s match-funding schemes. We raise about £20,000 annually to support good causes. Our annual Kite Festival on Therfield Heath is our biggest single event, attracting around 5000 visitors and raising a large sum for a chosen charity. You can read more about the Kite Festival in the Out and About article. Our special focus on youth drives ‘Schools Make Music’, where pupils have an opportunity to sing and play on a professional stage, and the Technology Tournament, a real challenge to the creativity of our upcoming technologists. There’s more - much more than we can list here. We’re always pleased to welcome visitors to one of our weekly meetings, when we can offer possible members a taste of who we are and what we do.

Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary’s people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to launch sustainable projects that really do make a difference. get ready for Royston Arts Festival! The team at Creative Royston are working hard to pull together what is looking like another fantastic Royston Arts Festival, over the last weekend in September. This year there are more exhibitions, performances and activities then ever before. The centrepiece will once again be the Community Arts Event in Priory Memorial Gardens on the afternoon of Saturday 29th September. There will also be performances throughout the afternoon, including the Royston Town Development Band, Gog Magog Molly Dancers, Royston First School choirs and Crystalites Majorettes. Amongst the attractions, exploring this year’s theme of Voyages of Discovery, will be the return of the popular Yarnsmith of Norwich, a Glazed Creations workshop including an opportunity to explore eco crafting, face painting, henna artistry, Royston Town Band’s “Give Brass A Go” workshop and

A summer cordial

James Day, Head Chef at the award-winning Belle Freehouse in Bassingbourn gives his tips for a delicious summer cordial. The base of a cordial is simply equal parts of sugar and water made into a basic stock syrup. Simply add the sugar and water to a pan and bring to the boil. Let the mixture reduce until it begins to turn syrupy. To make a cordial with fruit (fresh or frozen work fine), chop and add the fruit to the syrup ingredients before bringing them to the boil. This way the flavours and colours will be extracted. However, if you are using more delicate florals such as rose, lavender or elderflower then add them to your syrup after you have removed it from the heat to keep the botanical flavour light and clean. In either case, let the syrup cool to room temperature and then strain through a sieve or colander lined with a piece of muslin. Let the liquid drip through slowly to keep the cordial clear. Pour the liquid into sterilised bottles and seal well. Your cordials should keep well for 3 to 4 weeks in the fridge. For a longer shelf life use plastic bottles and freeze the cordial. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a deliciously refreshing on a hot day when mixed with sparkling water, or for a weekend treat, serve it in a champagne flute and top up with prosecco!

Fun at fairlands

Year Four children from Roman Way First School had their end of year leaving celebrations at Fairlands Valley Park last Tuesday. An absolutely wonderful day was had by all and the children were a credit to their

school. All children had a go at canoeing, sailing, crate stacking and climbing the climbing wall. Many of them faced their fears and grew in confidence on the water and in the heights!

royston picture palace is here to stay! It’s five years since we first opened our doors in the summer of 2013, and in that time (and the three years planning before that) the cinema has grown from a mere aspiration into a highly-valued community asset. Last year we welcomed over 11,000 visitors through our doors.

Our history Royston Picture Palace is the result of a collaboration between Royston Town Council and Royston First BID Company Ltd. The BID is a collective pot of money funded by the business community in Royston which is used to implement community and business initiatives which would not otherwise happen, for example: Free After Three Parking, Christmas Lights, and additional town policing. Royston Town Council (with additional grants from NHDC) undertook a complete refurbishment of the Town Hall, including adding a lift to the upper floor, doubleglazed windows, an air cooling system, as well as a general refresh to the paintwork and upholstery. At the same time, Royston First committed to providing the cinema equipment: custom-built seating, a 7 metre wide retractable screen, state-of-the-art digital projection and a 17 speaker sound system.

Our volunteers Royston Picture Palace is staffed by volunteers, who give up their time to run performances. Quite simply, without our volunteer team, Royston Picture Palace would not run. We are always on the lookout for more volunteers to join the team, so if you are community-minded, have a few hours to spare on a weekend evening and would like to watch films for free, we would love to hear from you! Email us at info@roystonpicturepalace.org.uk Volunteer roles are varied and we can guarantee you’ll find the work rewarding and our team friendly. We also have Performance Manager roles available. No technical experience is necessary, just a willingness to step up on the night and make sure things happen in the correct order!

Our films We have been running a light programme over the summer months as, historically, we see much lower demand for the cinema in June, July and August (although we are fully air-conditioned - so can offer a rather cool alternative if our heat-wave persists!) We will, as previously, show films every weekend from September onwards, on a Friday and Saturday evening, with occasional matinees and Sunday showings. All our scheduled films are listed on our website as soon as they are available to book. We’re very excited to be showing Mamma Mia on Friday 31st August and Saturday 1st September – and if, as we anticipate, these showings sell out, we’ll add in extra screenings. Last year, we enjoyed a number of sell-out performances and, as we head into the Autumn, we expect to see a full programme of the best films being screened just a few weeks behind the main cinema release dates.

How to book Tickets are competitively priced at £7.90 for adults, £7.00 for senior citizens and £6.00 for children (14 and under). You can book online or purchase tickets in person at Royston Town Hall office on the corner of Melbourn Street and Melbourn Road, Monday - Friday 9am-4pm. Alternatively, our Box Office opens half an hour before each performance, so you can always take a chance and buy your tickets at the door.

Where to find us Royston Picture Palace is situated in Royston Town Hall. We are fully accessible with a ramp and handrails at the front entrance, a wheelchair accessible toilet on the ground floor, a lift between the ground and first floors and provision within our seating plan for up to three wheelchair users together with any carers. On site parking is available at Royston’s Civic Centre car park. Parking is Free After Three every day, and free all day on Sundays.

Our shop Our shop is well-stocked – but without the big prices you may have experienced at commercial cinemas. We offer a range of popcorn, chilled drinks, sweets and Farmhouse dairy ice creams. Our state of the art coffee machine allows you to select cappuccinos, filter and espresso coffees.

Winning the award for contribution to the community has been a great kick start for our summer plans. We would like to thank our customers for their Royston Business Awards nominations; the team from the Chamber of Commerce that put so much into organising the awards process and ceremony; and our judges that not only tolerated our excited monologue about our little studio and involvement in community projects but saw some merit

in it too! A Little Further Afield Out of the Block: Henry Moore Carvings

In the year of Henry Moore’s 120th birthday, the Henry Moore Foundation presents Out of the Block: Henry Moore Carvings, an exhibition exploring Moore’s changing approach to this key element of his artistic practice. Out of the Block brings together nearly 30 major works in stone and wood, made over six decades, from the collection of the Henry Moore Foundation. They trace Moore’s development as an artist and a carver and reveal his influences at different moments in his career. In addition to the sculptural work, the exhibition features film and photographs from the Henry Moore Archive which provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of Moore’s practice, from a quiet, solitary pursuit to a large-scale operation involving many hands and mechanical assistance. The film in the exhibition – recently digitised from the original silent, Standard 8 Cine Film reel - has never been shown in public before. It shows Moore working on the largest and most ambitious of his wood sculptures, Reclining Figure 195964, which is featured in the exhibition. The film also documents a visit to Henraux’s quarries in Querceta, Italy, in 1969. Henry Moore’s creative energy was boundless and he worked in a variety of mediums from drawing and printmaking to bronze casting. Carving, however, was his first passion and it always remained central in his practice. From his radical experiments in the 1920s

to the large scale public commissions of the post-war period, Moore’s carvings played an important part in shaping his identity as a modern sculptor and testify to his willingness to embrace new materials, techniques and sources of inspiration throughout his career. Moore was born in 1898 in Castleford, Yorkshire. As a child he was fascinated by stone in sculpture, architecture and the landscape. In 1921 he went to study art in London. His interest in non-European and prehistoric sculpture drew him to the notions of ‘direct carving’ and ‘truth to material’ championed by avant-garde sculptors he admired.

After the Second World War, Moore softened his position to reflect his new belief that the idea behind a work was more important than how it was made. Modelling in plaster or clay and casting in bronze became his main method of creation, but carving remained an important part of his practice. From the early 1960s he spent his summers working near the Carrara quarries in Tuscany where one of his favourite artists, the Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo, had sourced his marble.

Until the mid-1930s, Moore strictly adhered to these principles, working directly with materials and allowing their natural properties to shape his work. He rejected traditional stones like white marble and instead experimented with materials ranging from indigenous stones to exotic woods. His direct approach to carving had significant compositional implications. Forms had to be developed by a process of subtraction, within the boundaries of the original block. protect your rabbits in the hot weather Flystrike is a most distressing condition that can affect any animal, and unless it is caught quickly, it can be a very painful killer. Rabbits are very susceptible, especially if they have a problem that makes it hard for them to keep their rear-ends clean and owners need to be vigilant. Unfortunately, the fly’s are attracted to the smells of blood, faeces and urine, and they will lay their eggs on an animal that is injured or dirty. When the maggots begin to feast on the flesh of an animal, the results can be catastrophic, and it can all happen surprisingly quickly. The onus is entirely on owners to keep a regular check on their rabbits. But even healthy, active rabbits get dirty bottoms from time to time. So regular checks must be done and even more in the summer months, try getting in to the habit of checking them at least twice per day. It takes only a few hours from fly’s laying eggs to maggots hatching and eating into a rabbit’s flesh and once they are established, huge damage can be done, from which many rabbits

don’t recover. Generally maggots will need to be removed surgically. So take your rabbit to your local Vets so they can start removing the maggots and treating your rabbit as soon as possible. The 2018 Royston Arts Festival is fast approaching and local drama group CADS is preparing for its contribution to the festivities with an unusual appeal – empty gin bottles!

Hanna and Carla who sisters and own and run HC Jewellers in Royston High Street - an independent, family run business with a wealth of experience within the jewellery industry.

Their show this year is an adult comedy by David Tristram called Ghost Writer and tells the story of playwright Edward Pinfold, whose wife – the talented but tempestuous actress Ruby – was found dead exactly a year ago at an after-show party. The inquest decided that she died as the result of a lethal combination of pills and booze, and Edward really hasn’t got over her death. One year later he’s living in a scruffy bedsit in the attic of a house owned by his best friend Alex, unable to write and fallen on hard times. For reasons that will become clear during the play, a large quantity of gin bottles play a significant part in the events that follow, when the appearance of an unexpected visitor forces him to re-examine his past, deal with his present and consider his future. Director Michael Young says, “We’ve been having such glorious Summer weather recently so I know many of you will have been having barbecues, watching the World Cup or Wimbledon, or just relaxing in your gardens. No doubt

There’s going to be a lot of mischief going on when the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge launches in Hertfordshire libraries this year! To celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the much-loved Beano, this year’s challenge is called Mischief Makers, and will centre round the adventures of the most infamous mischief makers of them all – Dennis and Gnasher! Once again, Hertfordshire Libraries are challenging children to read six library books over the summer and return to the library to tell our staff all about them. They can read anything, including story books, fact books, talking books, and even e-books (available to download for free from our e-library). As part of this year’s challenge, children will use a map of Beanotown to search for a mysterious buried treasure. For each book that they report back on, they’ll collect

smelly stickers that provide clues to the treasure’s location. Dennis and Gnasher will be on hand to help them solve these clues, along with their friends Pie Face, Rubi and JJ! The challenge is free to take part in – all children need to do is visit their local library from 14th July to collect a starter pack, while stocks last, and complete their six books before 8th September. A huge success with Hertfordshire families year after year, the Summer Reading Challenge is the perfect way to share books together and spark a lifelong love of reading for pleasure. Large shrub selection Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott Traditionally this is considered a harder time of year in the border as many of the summer plants have finished flowering. Here are few things to consider to keep the interest going and extend the summer season in your borders. Later flowering hardy perennials help to extend the summer season. As all good gardeners know careful plant selection throughout the season is one of the keys to an interesting garden. A great way to help with inspiration is to draw on what you see in other gardens. If you see a late summer flowering plant in a show garden, open garden or garden visited on your holiday, find out its name and track it down. I like to use Anemone â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Honorine Jâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;obertâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to give white flower at the back of a border or you could use its thuggish, pink, relation Anemone japonica but beware its desire for garden domination. Sedums and Rudbeckias will come into their own too. I like to use the dark purple Sedum telephium â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Matronaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or Sedum

telephium â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Munstead Redâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Rudbeckia fulgida var. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Goldsturmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; has pretty yellow daisy flowers with black centres or the taller Rudbeckia maxima works well mixed with Verbena bonariensis â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Lolipopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. For extra height at the back of a border consider Eupatorium purpureum subspecies maculatum â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Atropurpueumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with its lovely pink umbels it is good for bees and butterflies too. Deliberate grass positioning will help to extend the interest and draw the eye through a border. There is a grass to suit every occasion but why not consider including them in the plant palette. If I want height I would use Miscanthus sinensis â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Marlepartusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with its pretty plumes of flower or Calamagrostis â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Karl Foersterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for narrow, vertical flower heads. Often in garden design I look to link the new garden to the wider landscape and in a rural context Deschampsia cespitosa and Deschampsia cespitosa â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Goldtauâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; help to bleed out into a less refined more natural feel. Late flowering shrubs not only add the summer interest but should be used to create the mixed garden border. I like to use Abelia x grandiflora or Abelia x grandiflora â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Prostrate Whiteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. They are both evergreen with pretty pinkie white flowers but â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Prostrate Whiteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is very compact if space is at a premium. For well-behaved blue in the mixed border Caryopteris x clandonensis â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Heavenly Blueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is a good selection or Budleja davidii â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Nano Blueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; which is a compact Budleja. Deadheading is a very easy way to extend the

flowering interest in the border. Simply cutting back the finished heads on a shrub rose will promote more flowers. Always cut back to a growing point and with luck you will be rewarded with more flowers later in the season. It has been a good summer for the climbing Rosa â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Madame Alfred Carriereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on my cottage. After diligent dead heading of the first flush of flower in early summer I am being rewarded with a second flush. It is a good time to consider the gaps in your border for planting in the autumn. I am in love with Rosa â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Gertrude Jekyllâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and Rosa â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Generous Gardenerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with their pretty pink scented blooms and hope to be planting more of these in the Autumn. Chopping back hardy perennials seems like a radical thing to do, but there are many plants that will have a second flush of flowering. Geraniums, Nepetas and Salvias are well known for it but I have known Delphiniums to push up a second flowering stem too. It looks a little drastic to begin with but the space is soon filled with growth again. It also helps to make the border look different and give the sense of anticipation. Leave this icing layer to form a slight crust as it sets and dries or cut into greedy portions and enjoying with fine company and perhaps a glass of something long, zesty, minty, and cool... any ideas? News from the conservators The latest update from The Conservators of Therfield Heath & Greens finds us in the height of summer having had most of June and much of July without rainwater. This has had a major effect on the grasses which, like everyone’s garden has turned brown and the ground under foot is very hard and is a potential fire hazard. With this in mind, please do remember that BBQs or the lighting of fires on the Heath is a criminal offence and that any naked flame is dangerous on such dry ground.

Hot and cold drinks and snacks donated by local businesses, toddler toys (older children may choose to bring their own), fun and laughter for everyone! Please join us!

With the summer holidays well under way it is great to see so many people using the Heath for picnics. Just be considerate and please make sure you take all your rubbish home with you. The one place we would ask you not to use for your picnic is Church Hill. This is due to the sensitive nature of the rare flora in this area.

Unfortunately there were four occasions where the sheep grazing on Penn Hill were disturbed and broke out of their enclosure. Spotlight On... Sport Royston In July 1972 representatives of sporting clubs based in Royston met to form Royston And District Sports Council. Now in 2018 the voice of sport for Royston is known as Sport Royston. Every sports club is invited to register with Sport Royston at no cost and participate in its activities. Over the years Sport Royston has promoted a variety of events, Junior Super Stars, Sports Fayres, Volunteer Awards and an annual Sports Quiz. Meeting two or three times a year in a social environment, participants are able to exchange ideas, share good practice, seek advice on obtaining grant aid and learn of training courses available ’on our doorstep’.

Packing for Holiday is a daunting task, you never know where to start. Here are some of my personal tips that help me pack.

Firstly before packing I like to make a list. Lists are helpful because you can check off what’s gone into your case and check what you have without digging through everything.

The Primark shop can also be a great day out with the kids. Give them say £30, (depending how much holiday clothing they need) and give them a basket and let them choose their own holiday clothes. However, I would keep an eye on them because even at my age I returned from Primark with a gel eye mask and various other items that probably aren’t needed for my holiday.

One thing I love to do is create outfits before going all the way down to shoes. That way you don’t risk bringing a top that doesn’t go with anything you’ve brought. It also helps to give you an idea of stuff you need to buy before going.

Don’t call a meeting unless there is a specific purpose to it. Ask yourself whether the meeting is necessary at all? What is this meeting for? What is the benefit? Clearly spell out what the meeting is trying to achieve – and agree with all participants. Every meeting needs an agenda, including what decisions are going to be made. Only involve those people who need to be there. So who needs to be in that meeting? Do you include everyone, so noone feels left out, or are you more discerning? Not involving everyone in the meeting doesn’t mean that you can’t gather everyone’s opinions

beforehand. But the meeting itself should only involve those who need to be there. Be prepared in advance It really pays to be prepared and circulate all documents in plenty of time before the meeting so everyone has time to read and digest the subject matter. Because you know what the meeting is for and what it hopes to achieve, this pre-meeting work really helps things stay on track. Get the right answer A lot of meetings seem to spend 80% of their time debating, 15% exploring possibilities and only 5% on the right answer. Bonkers! The bulk of any efficient meeting must be spent fine-tuning the chosen solution (another good reason to do as much as possible before the meeting). I hope that helps.
