November screenings

Crazy Rich Asians (12A)

Saturday 3rd November at 7.30pm This highly entertaining adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s 2013 best-selling novel follows a Chinese-American professor at New York University who accompanies her suave boyfriend home to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. Only then does she learn that he is the son of one of the country’s wealthiest families and one of its most sought-after bachelors. A funny, glamorous and hugely enjoyable Hollywood romcom.

The Little Stranger (12A)

Friday 9th November at 7.30pm In this gripping adaptation by Lenny Abrahamson (Room) of Sarah Waters’ novel, a repressed country doctor finds his life entangled with the inhabitants of a declining country mansion that seems to hold a dark secret. Set against the grim austerity of post-war Britain, the film combines atmospheric Gothic horror and class and social tension. An unsettling, chilling and slow-burning drama, with a terrific central performance from Ruth Wilson.

Lucky (15)

Saturday 10th November at 7.30pm The late, great character actor Harry Dean Stanton could not have asked for a better swan song. He stars as Lucky, an ageing veteran living in a small desert town in New Mexico. We follow him on his daily routine – yoga, TV shows, smoking, the diner, the bar – until a fall jolts him out of his comfort zone, forcing him to confront his mortality. With quirky side characters, a thoughtful script and tortoises, this is a funny and touching portrait of a maverick refusing to go without a fight. Book online at www.roystonpicturepalace.org.uk

The Wife (15)

Saturday 17th November at 7.30pm Joan Castleman (Glenn Close) has spent 30 years playing the faithful, supportive wife to her husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) and his stellar literary career. On the eve of Joe’s Nobel Prize for Literature award, Joan confronts the sacrifices she has made as well as some long-buried secrets. An incisive study of celebrity, marriage and the creative process, featuring superb performances from Close and a strong ensemble cast.

A Star is Born (15)

Friday 23rd November at 7.30pm Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper star in this glorious reinvention of Hollywood’s classic love story between a fading musician and the young singersongwriter he discovers. Cooper successfully updates the story of a seasoned musician who discovers – and falls in love with – a rising singersongwriter, but struggles with his inner demons as her career soars. Cooper is brilliant and Lady Gaga knocks it out of the park with her beautiful voice and stunning performance.

First Man (12A)

Saturday 24th November at 7.30pm Director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling re-team for this riveting story about the first manned mission to the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the decade leading to the historic 1969 Apollo 11 flight. This epic tale of the quiet engineer who rose through the ranks from test pilot to astronaut and then national hero is a visually stunning and emotionally engaging story that succeeds in celebrating the human being at the centre of a legendary moment in history. Tickets are also available from Royston Town Hall office, open Monday - Friday, 9am – 4pm
