YOUR GUIDE TO ROYSTON AND BEYOND 13/12/2018 15:28:51
Welcome Next Deadline
January begins with renewed enthusiasm as we start the new year afresh. Monday 14th Our pages are full of new ideas and January activities, from walking outdoors with the Ramblers, joining a new club or society or even starting a new job! Shepreth Spitfires are looking for new players of all ages and abilities to join their friendly teams, Home Start are looking for new volunteers, and Royston Arts Festival are launching their “Our Planet” theme for a green Arts Festival this year. Do look out for our new Hidden Royston series, which promises to explore yet-to-be revealed parts of Royston’s past and present. We are sure that you will enjoy the facts uncovered by Chris Lee; did you know, for example, that Royston Station is mentioned in one of Nick Hornby’s bestselling novels? (I did!) All that remains to be said is sit back and enjoy all that your local community has to offer through our pages, and we wish you a very happy and healthy year ahead.

The stories behind... The paintings of Kate Bieriezjanczuk Curwens Solicitors are showcasing the talented prize winner of the Royston Art Society Young Artist Awards. This is part of the 1st prize sponsored by Curwens Solicitors. Kate’s aim is always to tell a story with her art, drawing on inspiration from a tradition of romanticism and symbolism in the style of the old masters. Her subjects evoke a feeling of contemplation and isolation, dramatically dressed in rich clothing and jewellery.
‘Beautiful and powerful paintings that have a tranquil intimate quality’ Kate’s solo art exhibiton will be running from the 16th January until the end of February. coming football club based in the village of Shepreth that have a huge love for football and getting everyone involved. The Spitfires have development teams and teams in higher divisions in the South Cambs league allowing children of all abilities to join in. Children with moderate movement learning difficulties can play for Shepreth. The mini side of the club has just turned 1 year old in December. On top of that the club has already had much success! Three Shepreth boys (Under 9 and Under 7) have been scouted for Norwich PDC and one of the boys has recently played for Norwich in a selection match against West Bromwich Albion. One of the best things about Shepreth Spitfires is that they are very community based and work hard to ensure everyone gets to be involved in football. Recently, Shepreth Spitfires won £1000 from the Bags of Help Scheme Tesco Royston, and secured very generous sponsorship from Glazed Creations Royston for kits.
The club only charge £35 for the whole season including kit and training to ensure it’s affordable for everyone to be involved. The village council charge a minimal fee for mowing the pitches and the local councillor supported our application for a £1000 grant for goals, equipment, coaching courses and referees. Money was also raised for our own flood lights so training in the winter can be free. Shepreth Spitfires also work with the local village council to get funding for children who can’t pay any signing on fee. This year the Shepreth School fund paid for five children to play football. If you share a passion for football and would like to be involved with this amazing club please contact Sean Harper 07549 054236 or sean.harper.43@outlook.com

Corvus Amateur Drama Society (CADS) is Royston’s amateur drama group, performing since the 1940s. Membership is open to anyone from fifteen years of age upwards, though we also perform a family pantomime that embraces all age groups. The group performs regularly at Greneway School and Meridian School, Garden Walk, Royston. Out & About... Clubs and societies
Royston and the surrounding villages are a hive of activity. We are incredibly fortunate to have a wealth of clubs and societies within our town and villages, covering a wide range of interests - from arts to sports, adventure to support. It has been said that if an organisation doesn’t exist in the town, that Roystonians are very good at setting up their own! Since its launch in 2005, The Listing has been proud to support the very many clubs and societies. We maintain and publish a comprehensive list of all the organisations, clubs and societies in Royston and the surrounding villages on our website: www.bit.ly/ClubsDirectory
Whilst it is no longer possible to publish every organisation in our printed magazines (at the last count, we were listing over 400), we do love to hear your club news and are proud to launch our new organisations section. Please note that we cannot guarantee to include everything we receive and of course we reserve the right to edit your entry, but do please keep your news coming! In addition, we work with Royston First to compile the printed Clubs and Associations guide which covers all Royston-based organisations and is available to pick up from the Royston Information Centre at Royston Library.
If you notice that your entry needs updating, is no longer running or if you have started a new club, please email Ellie at info@townhousepublishing.co.uk

Royston u3a The U3A or University of the Third Age, which now provides courses to as many as 350,000 pensioners, doesn’t look anything like the model of a modern university. It costs almost nothing to attend and does nothing for your prospects of future employment. There may be other universities that do as little to enhance the economic value of their students, but they don’t boast about it, whereas U3A is designed for people who – unlike humanities graduates – have no need to earn money later in their lives. Lily Clark not only explains the techniques, but gives very clear step-by-step instructions which break down the training into easy to follow sections. The ‘top tips’ throughout the book help to highlight and reinforce the most important points. Loving Local Living
cath mentions...
I’m not a great one for New Year’s resolutions. Too much pressure in January (the darkest month of the year) and I’m doomed to failure. I will start 2019 with a healthy and “live well” outlook after the over-indulgence of December – more greens, less booze, more fresh air, less slumping. I love Asian-inspired food so a hearty Pho or fresh stir fry is an easy way for me to eat less whilst still feeling fulfilled. Here’s to a happy and healthy year ahead!

We can’t wait to be surprised and delighted by the many and varied interpretations that the talented creative community in Royston will provide, The committee is particularly keen to focus on the environment and the
challenges facing “Our Planet” and its climate, and will be thinking of ways to turn Royston green in September! season and, with Treasure Island in mind, the Listing is packing a shiny new compass, torch, and shovel to explore yet-to-be revealed parts of Royston’s past and present. Royston has much to be proud of – the Cave at the crossroads, the ancient burial mounds and rare Pasque flowers on Therfield Heath. The Hidden Royston series for 2019 plans to go beyond these ‘headline acts’ to inspire some “well, I never knew that” responses. We’ll be digging around – going underground to find out about unusual uses for domestic and commercial cellars. Exploring Royston after dark, we’ll reveal the late night pastimes of night owls, insomniacs and night shift workers. We’ll be knocking on doors to find out what goes on in places like the fire station, and behind the scenes at the Leisure Centre and Royston Picture Palace.
As a trailer for the new series, a couple of lesser-known facts about Royston… • Royston Station is mentioned in the bestselling novel About A Boy by author Nick Hornby. • Royston has the world’s largest refinery of secondary platinum group metals. • Following the Greenwich Meridian northwards from a point 5 kms south of Royston, there’s no higher ground between there and the North Pole – 4233 kms away. We’re inviting Listing readers to help us reveal Royston. If you have interesting stories to share, or curiosities you’d like uncovered, e-mail Chris Lee: leeinroyston@aol.com

Preheat the you are brushing, it can stick to the preparation oven to 160°C surface and tear. are a little more than bite size but not overly large as this can be a little sweet for some. Now pop this into the oven for around one hour until it is golden brown, slightly puffed up and crisp, which gives us plenty of time to make the syrup. So, place the sugar and honey in a pan. Pour the orange, lemon, and lime juice and the orange blossom water into a measuring jug and make up to 300mls with the addition of water. I have made this with all juice before which I find gives a far fruitier flavoured Baklava. Some people like to add Rose water or different spices like Cardamom, the choice is yours. Once you have the correct amount of your chosen liquid strain it onto the sugar and honey and slowly bring to the boil, then simmer gently for 10 minutes, and remove from the heat and leave to stand. When the Baklava has been baking for an hour and is crispy, has puffed up slightly and is golden brown pour the hot syrup all over the top pastry layer. Do not be alarmed, it will look like there is way too much liquid but the pastry now needs to stand for at least 6 hours to soak up. It will bubble for a while after the syrup is first added this is normal and to be expected! When you are ready to serve the Baklava lift out from the tin, use a sharp knife and cut through the scored lines into neat pieces and enjoy. Until next time dear reader..

Bumpkins provides so many opportunities for the children to thrive and I truly believe Bumpkins has helped my son prepare for school. The staff are all welcoming and friendly, and promote independence with the children, giving them a large variety of activities that have so much thought go into them. We highly recommend Bumpkins to others. VR, Parent

Think Garden, Think Richard Materials For A Purpose... Driveway Materials Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott Happy New Year! In my new series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose, I am going to be discussing to choose the right materials for your purpose and how they fit into the design of a space. I want to get you thinking about the options you have and how the right selection can give you a timeless solution rather than a predictable, uninspiring result. This month I want to explore driveway materials and how they can be used to give your property more curb appeal. Colour is an important driver in selection of materials. A lot of driveways are at the front of the property and the house brick often informs the colour of the materials for the drive. When I design a front garden I like a harmony of materials so that the space looks cohesive. A recent drive we built used old style red brick pavers as a surround, path and threshold to retain the grave. This tied in nicely with the house and was very in keeping with the existing aesthetic. In contrast a drive we designed and built in Cambridge used blue
engineering bricks, dark limestone and pale gravel to give a contemporary feel. Gravel is still far and away the most popular material selection for a drive. From a security perspective it works well due to the noise, but it is a cost effective solution and better for the environment. Water management has become a big issue over the years I have been working in this industry and anything that can prevent extra water in the system is a good thing. Gravel drives are great because they are permeable. There are of course many different gravel shapes, sizes and colours, but the key is to consider the theme of the space. If it is functional and municipal then concreate edging and shingle could be the answer. If the look is to be softer then a smaller size pea shingle with a subtler set edging detail could be the way to go. The most common mistake I see is too much gravel being used and this just creates a beach effect. We love to use limestone as the sub base material as the finished surface of gravel will bond into it and help hold it in place. It has also become very popular to use Eco grid to improve the stability of an area. I think this is relevant for a larger scale but for the domestic setting it is hard to beat a limestone and shingle finish. Pavers or bricks are really useful to help prevent gravel migrating onto the highway. The simple addition of five or six courses of pavers or engineering bricks at the threshold of your drive really smartens things up. Again, remember to consider colour selection if the effect is not complementary then you should
think twice. Whenever we present a new design we always show samples of materials, but even then it can be useful to see the materials used on a large scale on a previous job. Pavers are a great way to edge a space. They can also help continue a design theme from front to back garden. Blocks are popular as a drive material. The entry level materials although cheap and municipal can be the right choice for some projects. We recently used the entry level grey blocks on a no nonsense project in Cambridge where a new property had been built at the end of a garden that backed out onto a road. This solution was appropriate because it fitted the local aesthetic perfectly. We had to manage the water into an Aco drain and away to a soak away. This is a down sides of less permeable surfaces. These are the most commonly used materials but other solutions are available such as resin bound surfaces, Breedon gravel and even old fashioned grass as a temporary parking surface. It is important to remember that the front garden should be more than a car parking area it should look good too! A good use of hard materials can then be brought to life with plant selection. Wildlife trust BCN New Year Resolutions – Take a Wild Work Out! What better way to start 2019 than making a resolution to ‘give time’ to a charity volunteering for The Wildlife Trust involves meeting like-minded people, having a great outdoors work out (free!), as well as helping the local environment – a win, win, win scenario! The Wildlife Trust relies on a wonderful army of volunteers who are very highly valued; joining a work party on a nature reserve is the ideal way to get some fresh air, keep fit and make a huge difference for local wildlife. Many volunteers feel a tangible, positive benefit from their involvement – and the sense of giving is strong. “Volunteering at the reserve helps me keep fit and meet new people, and it’s great to see so much wildlife.” WT BCN Senior Reserves Manager Nancy Reed says: “Since I started working in conservation nearly 15 years ago, I’ve seen many times how helpful and even transformative volunteering can be for people struggling with their mental health. My life has been changed by it and so have many others. There’s something about
being outdoors, carrying out physical work with a group of friendly, welcoming, likeminded people, that can just help to lift your mood. It needn’t be the start of a career, like it was for me, it might just be a hobby, but it’s one that can lead to a lifelong interest and better mental health – and that’s a scientific fact!” Volunteering with the Trust’s work parties is both sociable and varied - often involving cake and a cuppa along the way. Further quotes from volunteers include: “I feel more connected to nature and my environment and have developed interests in this area,” and “It’s restoring my faith in human nature.” www.wildlifebcn.org/getinvolved/volunteer www.wildlifebcn.org/getinvolved/volunteer/workparties

school of dancing The Stephanie Prior School of Dancing (SPSD) was founded over 50 years ago by the late Stephanie Prior, a hugely popular member of the local community. When Stephanie passed away in 2005, her daughter Tara’s world fell apart, and it didn’t take Tara long to realise that she needed to continue her Mum’s legacy. Tara shared her Mum’s passion for dance; she had danced since the age of 3 and helped her in classes as she got older, so she balanced full time employment with continuing the dance school. After the birth of her daughter Danica, Tara made the big step of expanding the school on a full time basis. Fast forward to now, and the school teaches over 450 students, and is housed in its own premises on Lumen Road. Many students have been dancing with SPSD since they were 3 years old and some are still with the school, now in their 20’s and 30’s. In some cases, Tara is now teaching their children!
The school offers a wide range of classes, from ‘Mini Movers’ for children from 18 months right through to adults, some in their 80’s, who enjoy their weekly Ballroom and Latin Classes. Tara specialises in Freestyle Disco, Street Dance, Ballroom and Latin American, Rock &Roll & lyrical but also offers classes with other members of her faculty in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Contemporary and Musical Theatre. SPSD has a strong competition squad who travel all over the UK taking part in Freestyle Competitions and achieving a great deal of success, and children are given the opportunity to take examinations with the National Association of Teachers of Dance and The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance. Look out for a full scale production of Dance, Song and Drama at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage every two years. Tara wholeheartedly believes in equal opportunities, so every student is given the chance to participate in these shows. SPSD has an incredible family spirit and Tara prides herself on offering a safe and comfortable environment in which to learn new skills, and students gain a feeling of belonging to something very special.

January is one of my favourite months and I love to plan for the year ahead which of course involves booking a holiday or two to overcome the January Blues! A very exciting year as I’ll be running my second London Marathon raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital a charity very close to me heart, you can read more about by story by visiting; https:// www.justgiving.com/TeamCerysDVLM2019 so with this in mind my first part of the year will involve ‘Dry January’, healthy eating, along with lots of fresh air and exercise. I’ll be calling on my training buddies at Royston Runners and Fighting Fit for lots of support and motivation over the next few months…! Wishing you all a fit and healthy year ahead!

acupuncture and no needle therapies
Ever wonder why New Year resolutions are so hard to keep? Don’t fight a losing battle: there may be reasons other than your self-discipline. Chinese Medicine sees Mind and Body as one. Willpower, anger and capacity for joy are all intimately linked to the health of internal organs and tissue oxygenation. It is actually quite logical: imagine being kind and loving when you stubbed your toe! So whether you have resolved to shed those stubborn pounds, improve your mental wellbeing or alleviate a lingering pain, let Heaven And Earth Health help you become the best version of yourself in 2019! Heaven And Earth Health is an independent Acupuncture and No Needle Therapies practice established by Iga, a professional with a Masters of Science degree in Chinese Medicine.
It all began 12 years ago, when Iga helped edit a documentary on ear acupuncture for PTSD. Her increasing fascination with this ancient system of healing culminated in a 4-year long study and a research paper published in the European Journal of Integrated Medicine. Iga now lives in Royston with her husband, three children, three chickens and a dog. She loves treating children, and her youngest daughter enjoys acupuncture so much she keeps asking for it even when she is healthy! In 2019, Iga offers: regular appointments, home visits, as well as budget multibed appointments. And if getting fitter while in touch with your internal energy appeals to you, there are new Taiji, Qi Gong and Meditation classes starting in January, too. New Year’s Resolutions
mentions
This time of year can be really hard as the festive period is over and everyone is making resolutions for the New Year. Here’s some ideas of what New Years Resolutions you can make and how to help achieve them. 1. Eating Healthy is probably the most popular. Why not visit one of the many markets throughout the month and pick up some fresh fruit and veg. You can find the Markets on page 12 2. Exercising, Royston isn’t short of places you can exercise. Gyms include: • A10 Health & Fitness • Royston Leisure Centre • Wilmott’s Gym • Gymbos • Melbourn Sports Centre However places like Fighting Fit, Park Fit and Royston Complementary Health Centre also offer
classes. If that still doesn’t take your fancy why not visit our online Clubs and Societies directory and think about joining a Sports Club. We have so many to offer in Royston and the surrounding villages 3. Being more organised. One way to get more organised is to start the year with a planner. Even though in January it may seem like you haven’t got much to put in there, once you get birthdays, appointments and meetings in there you won’t regret it.Try WHSmith or the Stationery Cupboard for a planner. Feel free to get creative and make it as pretty and colourful as you wish. Let us know how you get on with your resolutions we can’t wait to hear!

“New Year, New Vibes” Heading into a new year may not always be all positive, especially if the festive season has been a crazy one and maybe you didn’t get as much rest as you would have liked and before you know it, you are back to reality. The pressure of making New Year resolutions are floating in the air. The expectations that we should all be bouncing to the gym, eating healthier or saving more money can be so overwhelming that most of us fail before we have really begun. The past few years I have changed that expectation of what New Year should look and feel like and used the time to simply “streamline my life”. Instead of focusing on one thing intently and creating so much pressure to achieve it I take a look at my entire life and see what areas I could improve and become more efficient in, healthier or more active. the shops that are 5 minutes away, I’ll take the walk. Instead of picking up a chocolate bar I’ll grab some fun nuts (not the boring ones), and instead of picking up another scented candle I ask myself if I actually really need it. This way it’s manageable, I can fall off the wagon and then just jump straight back on without giving myself a hard time. Simply write a list of the areas you would like to streamline and keep that list in the back of your mind when going about your daily life. Little changes add up to massive ones. So instead of the same old resolutions pour some little positive vibes into every area of your life.

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to try something new and The Meridian Triathlon Club are always welcoming new members whatever stage of fitness, gender or age.But don’t just take it from us, hear what current members have said about starting triathlons and joining our club since we were founded in 2015. “I turned 55 last year and I set myself 55 challenges and one of them was to do a triathlon. I then got my bike and did my first triathlon event last September. It’s an amazing feeling of being able to do something that you didn’t actually know you could do. soon after that we should try swimming together and after meeting Alice Barnes (MTC Chair) she suggested that I should start looking into triathlons. I thought what a challenge that would be at 57! It has given me a new set of friends and I look forward to the training”. – Mark Whitehead “I got into triathlons because the doctors had told me I should start running which I had never done in my life. I was a swimmer as a kid, so I could do the swimming and that’s nearly a triathlon! Little did I know I could ride a bike. It’s led me back to the pool which I haven’t been near in years and the only running I had done in my first 52 years was to catch a train. It has given me a whole new outlet in life!” – Elspeth Goodspeed
New years day walking
After all the excitement of Christmas and the beginning of a New Year, the best way to clear your head for 2019 is a walk. A gentle walk is the best way to blow away the cobwebs. The Ramblers festival of winter walks has been taking place throughout December and is still taking place until the 6th January. The Ramblers invite everyone to join them in enjoying the best of Britain’s wintry landscapes. Perhaps joining a Ramblers group could be your New Years Resolution. Whatever your age or ability there’s a walk for you. Royston and the surrounding villages

We’re Celebrating 50 Years of Slimming World in 2019
To celebrate the start of 2019, Slimming World’s 50th Year, the slimming experts from Royston and the surrounding villages are looking forward to sharing their secrets for successful slimming with the local community to help people make their healthy New Year’s resolutions a reality. “Lots of people will be making resolutions to lose weight and improve their health this New Year. Successful weight loss isn’t just about losing weight, it’s about keeping it off too. Making temporary changes and going on a ‘diet’ that’s unsustainable in the long-term will only ever be a quick fix, meaning you’ll sadly be bound to regain any weight you lose – and maybe more – as soon as you go back to your normal eating habits. If you really want to be inspired for the long term, the key is to make healthy, realistic changes to your lifestyle that you can keep up for the rest of your life” said Jo Mitchell, who runs the Royston Evangelical Slimming World group in Royston. We’re celebrating with a brand new golden anniversary member
pack and a six-week journal to get everyone off to a flying start, which will be given out free, to all our new members. There will also be a special Countdown offer – giving free membership and 12 weeks for the price of 10 (offer ends 19th January 2019) and to help you stay slim for life there’s a new maintenance plan. Group is where the magic happens every week and we can’t wait to welcome new and returning members. Our groups are open 52 weeks a year and offer a mixture of support, recipes, tips and hints to help through the trickiest of times, wrapped up with lots of fun and celebrations along the way. There is never any judgement or humiliation, even when life gets more difficult. We have an exciting 50th year ahead with lots of sparkling offers, prizes and golden opportunities and here’s to a healthier, happier YOU in 2019! To Be Inspired by Slimming World in 2019 visit www.slimmingworld. co.uk or call Jo on 07792 425107. Groups run Monday to Saturday in Royston and the surrounding areas at different locations and various times.

Start 2019 with a new style A New Year is a perfect time for you to start experimenting with new styles. Whether it’s with your makeup or your clothes or even your shoes the possibilities are endless. The January sales are a perfect time to look at freshening your wardrobe as everything is on sale! If you can bear with the sales why not grab a couple of things that are different to your usual style in the sale. After all if they are 50% why not? If you want to try something new but you aren’t really sure where to start, here are a few simple and easy ideas to get you started, so why not give it a go!
If you are looking to brighten up your wardrobe for 2019 why not start small. A vibrant colour scarf or top even if you still wear black jeans and a black coat can completely change a look. Add jewellery as it can always freshen up a look. Striped or checked trousers are in fashion this season so why not try a pair of those with a plain white or black top, some boots and a coat. If you are looking to freshen up your makeup why not try a new shade of lipstick? Maybe a pinky peach or a daring red. Lipstick can change the whole look. Try different colours of eyeshadow, reds and pinks instead of the usual browns? There are so many things you can try so let me know how you get on with experimenting with different looks in 2019.

My Local Life Gary cretton Our Local Life this month is Gary Cretton who works at the highly established KDW Financial Planning. Find out a bit more about Gary and the work he does: Since I finished education, I went in to the Financial Services and have been a Financial Adviser for 22 years now. I began with the Co-operative Insurance Society, and also worked for Santander and Barclays, however I have always had the clients interest at heart and chose to take the risky step to become an Independent Financial Adviser seven years ago and am now regulated through KDW. I provide advice for everything from Investments, Inheritance Tax Planning and Protection, and I am also a specialist In Pension Planning with the advanced qualification to provide advice on all types of Pensions including Defined Benefit (Final Salary schemes). I have continued to build my client base over the years, planning their needs and goals to meet all the varied situations that life can throw at you. All clients are reviewed and managed by me on a regular basis to help meet their needs at the outset and throughout their life.
Where do you live? I have lived in the quiet village of Litlington for 5 years now. What’s your favourite local place to eat? Yuva Fine Fusion in Kneesworth! The food is just fantastic and varied and the staff are always friendly. The last book you read? Origin By Dan Brown. That was on holiday in the summer - I don’t get much time to read non-‘financial’ literature! Most of my reading on a day to day basis will be the Times Newspaper, and financial magazines and stock market reports! What makes you happy? Spending time with family and friends, catching up and relaxing with an occasional glass of wine. What do you love about your work? Building relationships with clients - I have some as good family friends who joined me as a customer years ago. Also, being independent, allows me to work for the client in the client’s best interest, unlike when working for a large corporate institution meeting the company’s goals.
What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? I like to spend time with my family - usually taking the dog on a long walk on the Heath, Wimpole or Ashwell. A perfect Saturday would also include a game of golf on a sunny day. What is your favourite time of year? I love the time of year and the build up to Christmas with my girls has always been exciting, even though they are getting older now. Definitely Christmas! How do you keep fit? I play golf whenever I can – I am a member at Royston Golf Club. I run a couple of times a week and also plenty of walks with the dog. What inspirational quote sums you up? ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts’ Winston Churchill. This sums up many stages of my life. 07703 692773 gary.cretton@kdw.co.uk www.kdw.co.uk

New year, New business tips Here are nine tips if you are thinking of starting a new business this year. 1 Evaluate yourself – honestly Why do you want to do it? Are you the right sort of driven person? Could you cope with the lack of security? Can you afford to do it? 2 What is your business idea? What problem will your business solve? Why will people spend money to have what you are offering? 3 Do market research. Is there a market there already? If not, why isn’t anyone else doing it? Do your own primary research, don’t rely on Google, and talk to more people than just your friends. 4 Get feedback. Try and get some sales – from people that don’t know you. Listen to all feedback, and welcome negative feedback as it’s how you’ll improve your prototype. 5 Make it official. Start building relationships with key advisors – the minimum would be the bank, an accountant, a solicitor, an IT expert and an ‘experienced-pairof-eyes’ business mentor.
6 Write your business plan. This could just be a couple of sides of A4 for a sole-trader, but if you will need investment, premises and staff, you will need to do more. 7 Finance your business. Talk to your advisors about the best ways to do this. Business angels, crowd funding, family & friends, savings, grants? 8 Start building your team. Will you create a partnership, employ salaried staff or use freelancers? Think about what staff your business needs now, and also what it may need in the future. Can you easily scale up your business later? 9 And finally – grow! Realise your work will never be done – continue to hire the best people, make the best product and build your empire. But the most important things are customers and cash – focus on these and you really will have a Happy New Year!
