Shepreth Spitfires are looking for new players of all ages and abilities to join their friendly teams, Home Start are looking for new volunteers, and Royston Arts Festival are launching their “Our Planet” theme for a green Arts Festival this year. Do look out for our new Hidden Royston series, which promises to explore yet-to-be revealed parts of Royston’s past and present. We are sure that you will enjoy the facts uncovered by Chris Lee; did you know, for example, that Royston Station is mentioned in one of Nick Hornby’s bestselling novels? (I did!) We recently performed Britten’s War Requiem to high acclaim and will continue to rise to the challenges set by the musical director, Andrew O’Brien. coming football club based in the village of Shepreth that have a huge love for football and getting everyone involved. The Spitfires have development teams and teams in higher divisions in the South Cambs league allowing children of all abilities to join in. Children with moderate movement learning difficulties can play for Shepreth. The mini side of the club has just turned 1 year old in December. On top of that the club has already had much success! Three Shepreth boys (Under 9 and Under 7) have been scouted for Norwich PDC and one of the boys has recently played for Norwich in a selection match against West Bromwich Albion. One of the best things about Shepreth Spitfires is that they are very community based and work hard to ensure everyone gets to be involved in football. Recently, Shepreth Spitfires won £1000 from the Bags of Help Scheme Tesco Royston, and secured very generous sponsorship from Glazed Creations Royston for kits.

The club only charge £35 for the whole season including kit and training to ensure it’s affordable for everyone to be involved. The village council charge a minimal fee for mowing the pitches and the local councillor supported our application for a £1000 grant for goals, equipment, coaching courses and referees. Money was also raised for our own flood lights so training in the winter can be free. Shepreth Spitfires also work with the local village council to get funding for children who can’t pay any signing on fee. This year the Shepreth School fund paid for five children to play football. Corvus Amateur Drama Society (CADS) is Royston’s amateur drama group, performing since the 1940s. Membership is open to anyone from fifteen years of age upwards, though we also perform a family pantomime that embraces all age groups. The group performs regularly at Greneway School and Meridian School, Garden Walk, Royston. This year’s pantomine is Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates and this show promises to be bigger, brighter and bolder than ever before! We are incredibly fortunate to have a wealth of clubs and societies within our town and villages, covering a wide range of interests - from arts to sports, adventure to support. It has been said that if an organisation doesn’t exist in the town, that Roystonians are very good at setting up their own! The Rotary Club of Royston would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year. If you would like to start the year with a bit of fun and intellectual stimulation then please form a team (up to 8) and join in our annual quiz. It will be held at Greneway School on Saturday 12th of January, includes a fish and chip supper, and all profits will go to charity - see our web site for further details. Our monthly walk on Sunday 13th January will see us exploring footpaths in and around Royston. Never venturing more than about half a mile from the town centre we will nevertheless still be experiencing lovely countryside. It is a circular tour starting from the Old Bull Inn car park at 9.45, followed by an optional lunch there, feel free to join us.

Greneway School Great Greneway Bake Off Pupils were invited to take part in a house competition where they baked 4 cupcakes. The cupcakes were judged by some very willing volunteers and the remainder were sold to raise money for house charities. A total of more than £110 was raised. As always, the standard was very high making the judges decisions extremely difficult.

I will start 2019 with a healthy and “live well” outlook after the over-indulgence of December – more greens, less booze, more fresh air, less slumping. season and, with Treasure Island in mind, the Listing is packing a shiny new compass, torch, and shovel to explore yet-to-be revealed parts of Royston’s past and present. are a little more than bite size but not overly large as this can be a little sweet for some. Now pop this into the oven for around one hour until it is golden brown, slightly puffed up and crisp, which gives us plenty of time to make the syrup. So, place the sugar and honey in a pan. Pour the orange, lemon, and lime juice and the orange blossom water into a measuring jug and make up to 300mls with the addition of water. I have made this with all juice before which I find gives a far fruitier flavoured Baklava. Some people like to add Rose water or different spices like Cardamom, the choice is yours. Once you have the correct amount of your chosen liquid strain it onto the sugar and honey and slowly bring to the boil, then simmer gently for 10 minutes, and remove from the heat and leave to stand. When the Baklava has been baking for an hour and is crispy, has puffed up slightly and is golden brown pour the hot syrup all over the top pastry layer. Do not be alarmed, it will look like there is way too much liquid but the pastry now needs to stand for at least 6 hours to soak up. It will bubble for a while after the syrup is first added this is normal and to be expected! When you are ready to serve the Baklava lift out from the tin, use a sharp knife and cut through the scored lines into neat pieces and enjoy. Until next time dear reader..

Think Garden, Think Richard Materials For A Purpose... Driveway Materials Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott Happy New Year! In my new series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose, I am going to be discussing to choose the right materials for your purpose and how they fit into the design of a space. I want to get you thinking about the options you have and how the right selection can give you a timeless solution rather than a predictable, uninspiring result. This month I want to explore driveway materials and how they can be used to give your property more curb appeal. Colour is an important driver in selection of materials. A lot of driveways are at the front of the property and the house brick often informs the colour of the materials for the drive. When I design a front garden I like a harmony of materials so that the space looks cohesive. A recent drive we built used old style red brick pavers as a surround, path and threshold to retain the grave. This tied in nicely with the house and was very in keeping with the existing aesthetic. In contrast a drive we designed and built in Cambridge used blue

engineering bricks, dark limestone and pale gravel to give a contemporary feel. Gravel is still far and away the most popular material selection for a drive. From a security perspective it works well due to the noise, but it is a cost effective solution and better for the environment. Water management has become a big issue over the years I have been working in this industry and anything that can prevent extra water in the system is a good thing. Gravel drives are great because they are permeable. There are of course many different gravel shapes, sizes and colours, but the key is to consider the theme of the space. If it is functional and municipal then concreate edging and shingle could be the answer. If the look is to be softer then a smaller size pea shingle with a subtler set edging detail could be the way to go. The most common mistake I see is too much gravel being used and this just creates a beach effect. We love to use limestone as the sub base material as the finished surface of gravel will bond into it and help hold it in place. It has also become very popular to use Eco grid to improve the stability of an area. I think this is relevant for a larger scale but for the domestic setting it is hard to beat a limestone and shingle finish. Pavers or bricks are really useful to help prevent gravel migrating onto the highway. The simple addition of five or six courses of pavers or engineering bricks at the threshold of your drive really smartens things up. Again, remember to consider colour selection if the effect is not complementary then you should

think twice. Whenever we present a new design we always show samples of materials, but even then it can be useful to see the materials used on a large scale on a previous job. Pavers are a great way to edge a space. They can also help continue a design theme from front to back garden. Blocks are popular as a drive material. The entry level materials although cheap and municipal can be the right choice for some projects. We recently used the entry level grey blocks on a no nonsense project in Cambridge where a new property had been built at the end of a garden that backed out onto a road. This solution was appropriate because it fitted the local aesthetic perfectly. We had to manage the water into an Aco drain and away to a soak away. This is a down sides of less permeable surfaces. These are the most commonly used materials but other solutions are available such as resin bound surfaces, Breedon gravel and even old fashioned grass as a temporary parking surface. It is important to remember that the front garden should be more than a car parking area it should look good too! A good use of hard materials can then be brought to life with plant selection. school of dancing The Stephanie Prior School of Dancing (SPSD) was founded over 50 years ago by the late Stephanie Prior, a hugely popular member of the local community. When Stephanie passed away in 2005, her daughter Tara’s world fell apart, and it didn’t take Tara long to realise that she needed to continue her Mum’s legacy. Tara shared her Mum’s passion for dance; she had danced since the age of 3 and helped her in classes as she got older, so she balanced full time employment with continuing the dance school. After the birth of her daughter Danica, Tara made the big step of expanding the school on a full time basis. Fast forward to now, and the school teaches over 450 students, and is housed in its own premises on Lumen Road. Many students have been dancing with SPSD since they were 3 years old and some are still with the school, now in their 20’s and 30’s. In some cases, Tara is now teaching their children!

“New Year, New Vibes” Heading into a new year may not always be all positive, especially if the festive season has been a crazy one and maybe you didn’t get as much rest as you would have liked and before you know it, you are back to reality. The pressure of making New Year resolutions are floating in the air. The expectations that we should all be bouncing to the gym, eating healthier or saving more money can be so overwhelming that most of us fail before we have really begun. The past few years I have changed that expectation of what New Year should look and feel like and used the time to simply “streamline my life”. Instead of focusing on one thing intently and creating so much pressure to achieve it I take a look at my entire life and see what areas I could improve and become more efficient in, healthier or more active. I love the time of year and the build up to Christmas with my girls has always been exciting, even though they are getting older now. Definitely Christmas! How do you keep fit? I play golf whenever I can – I am a member at Royston Golf Club. I run a couple of times a week and also plenty of walks with the dog. electric vehicle grants Grant funding up to a maximum of £20,000 is now available to businesses in North Herts and Cambridgeshire, to replace their existing vehicles with electric vehicles, thanks to capital grants now available through the Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEECP). BEECP can potentially provide grant funding up to 25% of the total costs, to eligible businesses for a number of energy efficiency measures such as LED lighting, heating and insulation, and as of the 1st October, they are now able to offer financial assistance to

help eligible businesses to buy electric vehicles or invest in a solar PV renewable energy system.

New year, New business tips Here are nine tips if you are thinking of starting a new business this year. 1 Evaluate yourself – honestly Why do you want to do it? Are you the right sort of driven person? Could you cope with the lack of security? Can you afford to do it? 2 What is your business idea? What problem will your business solve? Why will people spend money to have what you are offering? 3 Do market research. Is there a market there already? If not, why isn’t anyone else doing it? Do your own primary research, don’t rely on Google, and talk to more people than just your friends. 4 Get feedback. Try and get some sales – from people that don’t know you. Listen to all feedback, and welcome negative feedback as it’s how you’ll improve your prototype. 5 Make it official. Start building relationships with key advisors – the minimum would be the bank, an accountant, a solicitor, an IT expert and an ‘experienced-pairof-eyes’ business mentor.

6 Write your business plan. This could just be a couple of sides of A4 for a sole-trader, but if you will need investment, premises and staff, you will need to do more. 7 Finance your business. Talk to your advisors about the best ways to do this. Business angels, crowd funding, family & friends, savings, grants? 8 Start building your team. Will you create a partnership, employ salaried staff or use freelancers? Think about what staff your business needs now, and also what it may need in the future. Can you easily scale up your business later? 9 And finally – grow! Realise your work will never be done – continue to hire the best people, make the best product and build your empire. But the most important things are customers and cash – focus on these and you really will have a Happy New Year!
