The Listing judges were particularly impressed with Harley’s bright, bold and Christmassy image. Sofia’s winning drawing graces the cover of our sister title, The Listing Royston, we enjoyed her Christmas scene and of course, the Royston Crow which tops the Christmas Tree! This is the first time we’ve held our Design a Cover competition and we’ve been overwhelmed with the standard of the entries well done and thank you to all of our entrants, please do come back again next year. Foxton Men’s Breakfast

Foxton Men’s Breakfast is a small village group that meets at Foxton Village Hall usually on the third Saturday of the month with about 20 to 30 covers. An outreach of the Anglican Four Churches benefice and Methodist Church in South Cambridgeshire, it is non-profit and donates to the agreed charity of the Speaker’s choice. We do not pay a speaker’s fee or expenses, however, we can promise a very good, freshly cooked English breakfast or a light Continental style one with as much tea, coffee and fruit juice as you can drink! Advice, friendship, good company, education, discussions and wholesome banter are also on the menu. Attendees usually make a donation of about £7 to cover costs and a gift to the speakers charity. All are welcome, ladies as well. We are always looking for new speakers. If you have a subject that may be of interest and a particular charity to support then please get in touch.

Roysia Women’s Club

We had three very entertaining speakers during November. Catherine Walker came to tell us about Hertford Museum which was founded by the Andrews brothers in 1903 to house their huge diverse collection. They later gifted the museum to the town of Hertford. Geoff Hales recalled ‘Letters Home – the Story of Gertrude Bell’ an English writer, traveller, political officer, administrator and archaeologist during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. And Mel Rees made a return visit to amuse us with his ‘Christmas Tale – or Two’, a light hearted look at life with a seasonal flavour. Our two meetings in December will be our social when we draw the raffle for our wonderful Christmas Hampers and our Christmas Lunch at the Heath Sports Club, our festive way to end a lovely year of fun and friendship. Royston u3A Royston U3A’s membership has soared past the 500 mark - making the group a real record breaker. Chairman Jackie Gellert said: “Numbers are growing all the time, we have more than 30 interest groups and it’s impressive that this has been achieved in four and a half years. What makes U3A unique is that the groups are run by members who share their expertise and enthusiasm and I’d like to thank them and all our members for their whole-hearted support.” Magician Ian Keable, speaker at a packed October meeting, revealed that Charles Dickens is renowned as a literary genius, but few know he was also an amateur conjurer. Ian recreated some of Dickens’ tricks and mystified us performing the leaping card wonder and pyramid box wonder. There will be no monthly meeting in December and the next meeting will be on January 28th with a talk by Mike Levy on the life of W S Gilbert. Meetings start at 2pm in the Town Hall.

R&D Local History Society Our November Lecture was Seven Deadly Sins (and a few Virtues) by Dr. Lynne Boughton, when a packed audience were enthralled by her pictures of carvings and statues from Churches near and far, shown on the screen with stories to accompany them.

The worst is considered Pride. Sin is something that you may do once or twice, but Pride endures. Seven is an important number. As well as there being seven sins, there are also seven virtues, seven corporal words of mercy and seven sacraments. However, we have five senses and Lynne finished by saying: “Keep well 10 and flee from 7. Spend well 5 and come to heaven. Of course, 10 relates to the Ten Commandments. Our next meeting will be on 5th December entitled, “Live Forever! The Mystery and Magic of Egyptian Hieroglyphics.” Held in the Royston Town Hall at 8pm, everyone welcome. Spotlight On... Army Cadets Force

The Army Cadet Force (ACF) has nearly 40,000 cadets in more than 1,600 detachments all over the country and is one of the biggest and best clubs around. When it comes to fun, friendship, action and adventure, it’s hard to find anything that beats the Army Cadets. Become an Army Cadet and you’ll be spending your spare time taking part in adventurous activities like rock climbing, mountain biking, archery and abseiling. There will also be plenty of chance to play all your favorite sports because the ACF has competitions for both boys and girls at county, regional and national level. OK, so you might end up a little wet and muddy, but wouldn’t you rather be having the time of your life with some great new mates, instead of just sitting in front of a TV or computer alone in your room? Becoming an Army Cadet has heaps of benefits. The most obvious being that you get to take part in loads of exciting and challenging activities such as fieldcraft, adventure training, first aid, music, sports and shooting, to name but a few. When you join as a cadet you will make lots of new friends and get the opportunity to go on annual camp where you will meet cadets from other detachments in your county. You may even get to go on expeditions to amazing places in the UK and sometimes even abroad. The Army Proficiency Certificate (APC) training syllabus will teach you leadership skills, discipline and give you self-confidence you never thought possible. You will learn a wide range of transferable skills such as: the ability

YArn Bombing To Hit Barley in December

Last year, if you were walking or driving around Barley during December you may have been surprised to see that the six post boxes in the village had been yarn bombed with a Christmas theme. This year the yarn bombers are also going further afield to include the post boxes in Barkway and Great Chishill. The Barley Knitting group who meet on the second and fourth Wednesday evening each month in the Chequers pub in Barley, wanted to use their knitting skills to help others. They have

to command tasks; make decisions under pressure; plan and organise tasks and work as an effective team player as well as independently. These skills will equip you for life and add an extra string to your bow at times when competition for college places and employment is fierce. Through your cadet training you can also gain valuable qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, BTEC First Diploma in Public Services or Music or the ILM Certificate in Team Leading. Joining the Army Cadets will give you access to a wide range of exciting activities. From adventurous training (AT) such as kayaking, mountain biking and abseiling to militarythemed activities including shooting, fieldcraft and skill at arms, as well as training in first aid, you’ll get the chance to discover lots of new experiences. All of the opportunities on offer will help you to develop new skills, build confidence and most importantly, have fun. Snippets From Our Family Tree This month’s fabulous photo is of a wedding on Christmas Day 1917.

It is the wedding of my paternal Grandfather and Grandmother and was taken in the back garden of the groom’s father’s house in Paddington, West London. This was the house they were to spend much of their married life, and where their children were born, and indeed where their son Alan (my father) was also to start his married life.

That Christmas authenticity: The tradition of picking your own tree with family can’t be beaten and they provide a wonderful fragrance in the home. For some a real Christmas tree is the only way to go! Environmentally friendly: Taking into consideration greenhouse gas emissions, use of resources, fertilisers, pesticides and human health impacts, studies show that an artificial tree would have to be reused for 20 years to be greener than buying a fresh-cut tree once a year. A Christmas tree field is, relative to other agriculture, a very stable, diverse, sheltering and non-toxic habitat and not being a crop for eating can make use of “recycled” land (eg landfill, brownfield). The Forestry Commission states that real trees use about 10 times fewer materials and five times less energy than artificial trees. Also trees grown a few hundred miles away and not manufactured in a factory thousands of miles away allow for a much smaller associated carbon footprint. Wildlife habitat: A nine year harvest cycle creates a stable habitat providing a wonderful haven for a wide variety of wildlife, especially birds.

Recyclable/biodegradable: Real Christmas trees require no manufacturing process, only growing, and are 100% recyclable. Once Christmas is over rather than ending up in landfill sites they can be mulched for landscaping and gardening, or turned into woodchip. Why a Nordman Fir? The Nordman Fir is the UK’s favourite Christmas tree with its shiny, fragrant, mid green, soft to touch needles that will not fall when taken into a centrally heated house. The Nordman has a dense symmetrical habit. How to best care for your real Christmas tree: When you get the tree home cut an inch off of the bottom of the base (the same as you’d take a bit off the end of cut flowers). Place the tree in a bucket of water for an hour or so while you get the decorations out of the loft, bring in only when you’re ready to decorate the tree. Mount the tree in a water retaining tree stand and place away from direct heat. Keep the stand topped up with water every day.

For this month’s My Local Life, we spoke to Yolande Gautrey from one of the most loved shops in Royston High Street; Ladds. Here’s what she had to say... What’s your name? Yolande Gautrey Where do you live? Bourn How long have you worked at Ladds? I started working in the family business after leaving sixth form. The shop had just been rebuilt, I priced a lot of cards and after shutting down a shop in Cambridge, I helped evolve the upstairs of Ladds into what it is today. What’s your favourite local place to eat? Wood Grill, Queen Adelade, Croydon What’s your favourite local shop? Kisses for something special, Cream for undies. What was the last book you read? I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith What Makes You Happy? I love spending time with family and being at home.

What is your most memorable Royston experience? Working with our lovely, loyal customers. What are you looking forward to the most this December? Christmas Day as it’s a time I get off work to relax and enjoy the festivities. What is the most challenging aspect of your position? Computers - I hate them as I’m more of a practical person. What has been the most valuable life lesson you have learnt? However hard you try, you will never please everyone, so don’t try to. What do you do to relax? I rarely get a Saturday off work but Sundays spent with my daughter and sister riding our horses and looking after our many chickens, guinea fowl, quail and walking our exhuberant Terrier.

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Christmas Muffins

Hello my fellow foodies and welcome to this very festive edition of The Listing. This month I would like to share with you a recipe for Christmas Muffins. They have all the flavours of Christmas cake yet take a fraction of the time to make and if I am honest, they seem to be welcomed at the tea table as soon as earliest hints of Autumn are upon us. Perhaps it’s the promise of all that is to look forward to as we move towards winter. Christmas Muffins You will need a deep muffin tray and 12 large size paper muffin cases, pop the oven on to pre-heat at 220°C 200g plain flour * 50g ground almonds * 1tsp baking powder * 1tsp bicarbonate of soda * 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon * Finely grated zest of one orange * 100g caster sugar * 25g pistachios chopped * 50g toasted flaked almonds * 25g sultanas * 50g dried sour cherries * 50g dried cranberries * 50g dried, chopped apricots* 4 tbsp brandy (optional) 2 eggs from happy, healthy free running hens 100g melted butter 125ml full fat natural yoghurt 1/2 tsp almond extract 120g marzipan 2tbsp icing sugar* Your choice of sprinkles If you are going to use the brandy it should be used to soak the dried fruit overnight. If so, pop all the dried fruit in a bowl and

pour over the brandy, cover with a clean tea towel and allow to soak at room temperature over approximately a 24-hour period - stirring occasionally. If you choose not to use the brandy, begin at the next step. Divide the marzipan into 12 equal sized portions, then roll each portion into a ball and put aside for later. Next, into a large bowl combine all the ingredients marked with a ‘*’. In a separate bowl beat the eggs, then mix in the melted butter, yoghurt and almond extract. Quickly add this to the first bowl and mix the ingredients together until they are all incorporated but take care not to over mix. Now half fill 12 deep muffin paper cases with the mixture and into each lightly press one ball of marzipan then top with the remaining muffin mix and pop into the oven at 220° C for five minutes then turn down the temperature to 180° and cook for a further 15 minutes until risen and golden brown. Allow to cool before removing from the tray. When the muffins are completely cold, pop the icing sugar into a cup or small bowl and add water drop by drop and then stir until you have a consistency that will drizzle and hold its shape. At this point you may choose to add flavour to your icing by adding something such as almond or lemon. Then spoon, pour, splatter (whatever is your preferred method) the icing over the muffins and throw on your chosen sprinkles while the icing is still wet as this will help to stick them in place. All that is left to do now is to enjoy the muffins with good company and glass of mulled wine! Until next time dear reader...

Our Town Hall family Christmas Concert is a fixture in the town, but this year it’s undergone a bit of a makeover. A more informal cabaret style setup with nibbles and a licenced bar, and a new venue, King James Academy (senior site) will give the concert a new feel but there will still be the same great music, the same fantastic hampers to win in the raffle and the same red jackets

This is a whole boned free range Turkey with only the Drumsticks not boned. We then bone a free range duckling which has a cranberry and orange stuffing inside along with 4 free range pheasant breasts. The pork Sausage meat and the stuffed duck are then placed between the breast crown of the turkey and trussed to still look an oven ready Turkey. These are not small but generally if we start with a 6kg Turkey the finished boned weight is 6.5-7kg This is the smallest we can do. COOKING is recommended the day before in a deep roasting dish at a temp of 150 gas mark 3 covered in tin foil with an added half cup of stock or water. The duck will slowly cook inside the turkey basting from the inside. Cook for approx. 5-6 hours. Then remove Tin Foil for the last 30 minutes and Keep Basting. You will end up with a fantastic stock, which when set you will be able to skim the fat of and use to crisp your roast potatoes the next day. When you have removed the bird from the oven cover in tin foil to rest, place in fridge overnight. The Cold Ballantine with all inside birds and stuffing’s will set and are much easier to carve in complete slices. Once sliced you can reheat in the gravy made from the stock or simply place on plates and cover with cling film and microwave for succulent moist Turkey Approx weight 5.5-7.5kg

Royston Cave: Arts Project Artist Marcus Coates is working with Kettle’s Yard to develop a new work inspired by Royston Cave.

Coates’ project will aim to give this historic space a new civic function for 21st century Royston. Winter Tips For Your Pets With winter comes considerably colder temperatures and darker evenings, so to keep your pet warm, consider a sweater/coat for them - especially if they are old/elderly or have short hair. If walking your dog in the dark, fit them with a high-vis vest or LED collar to ensure they do not go astray. For cats, consider a reflective collar that can be easily opened if it gets caught somewhere. Moreover, frosted pavements and salt can be irritable for their paws so check them regularly for any cuts/sores. Finally, antifreeze liquid is generally sweet and thus appeals to pets. Unfortunately, it can be very toxic to them so make sure to wipe up any spills right away. Then, alas, Christmas. Try your best to keep your pet away from the tree as they could ingest pieces of decorations - leading to intestinal obstruction or perforation. Also, keep the festive food in a safe place: raisins, chocolate, grapes and sweets containing xylitol can be extremely toxic to cats and dogs and so if ingested, seek veterinary advice right away. Try to be as precise as you can. The vet will ask you the weight of your pet and the amount and type of toxic food ingested (especially chocolate). If the amount of toxic food is risky, then it’s safe to induce vomiting.

Winter Solstice

The winter solstice on 22nd December marks the day when the North Pole is tilted furthest away from the sun. The term ‘solstice’ derives from the Latin word ‘solstitium’, meaning ‘Sun standing still’. On this day the Sun seems to stand still at the Tropic of Capricorn. For us living in the Northern hemisphere, that means it’s the shortest day of the year, just 7 hours, 49 minutes and 41 seconds long. From then onwards, we’ll be seeing more daylight every day until the June Solstice; the longest day of the year. The winter solstice has played a significant role in the lives of many civilisations dating back over 5000 years. Think Garden, Think Richard

Time To Reflect... Garden Planning by Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott This month as we prepare for Christmas and a well-earned rest with family and friends. It is a great time to take stock of your garden. Winter is a time to hunker down in the warm and make plans for the year ahead. Here are a few things I recommend to help you focus on how to make the improvements and changes to your outdoor spaces. Evaluate what you have in the current garden. We usually inherit our garden from the previous owner whose taste is not necessarily our own. Be ruthless with what you have and question whether you really want what you have been given or if you prefer something new. It is good to start by evaluating the existing planting and measuring its garden worthiness. A specimen tree in the right place or a well-established boundary hedge could be worth keeping. Similarly mature shrubs that are long flowering with good autumn colour could be incorporated into a new plan. Smaller shrubs could be moved to make way for new features. It is rare that there is nothing worth keeping, but be ruthless! If it is really not your thing rip out and start again. The same is true of hard landscape features. I like a cohesion between the features Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve designed rather than a collection of features that have no relationship to each other. Listing the requirements for the space is a great way to help you focus. In design terms this is the brief and should include everything you aspire to. The list should start broad and be refined to keep it realistic. It can be tricky when couples have different views and requirements but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where a good designer can help steer you through. I always encourage customers to make mood boards or Pinterest pages. Using influences from travelling, friendsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; gardens and gardens from childhood are also good starting points for reflection. We all have places we are fond of or plants that we love from our childhood. Plan the space to fit the brief. A good design that fits the brief is the road map to the future success of the garden. When we design, the first drawing is a proposal for how the space could look and draws on all the elements from the brief. Visualising space can be hard and we now offer 3D flybys that put you in the new space and rotate your views from within it. This really helps some clients to see how it would feel to be in the space and helps inform any changes that may need to happen in this early part of the process. It is important to get the plan right as this informs the estimating and costing of a project.

Planning the planting is where the space comes to life. I am a plantsman first and often think in terms of planting when I look at new spaces. A good spacial design is nothing without good planting. There are many planting styles and I like the customer to indicate their style preference in the mood board or Pinterest selections. It is very subjective and sadly often strongly influenced by the amount of time we have left in our busy lives to spend maintaining the garden. The balance of shrubs to flowers in a space is a conversation I regularly have with customers who are time poor but want a pretty garden. Of course the other option is to pay for your space to be maintained by a horticultural expert and this is a good option if money allows as you get the pretty look without the work! There is always a way to achieve the garden you aspire to. Implementing changes often requires the build team on site if the changes are dramatic. Scraping out the old garden with diggers and beginning again can be tricky in small spaces but a necessity to moving forwards. The logistics of the job and timings are a skill in themselves. Having an accurate plan is the corner stone to the build of a new garden If you are thinking of making changes to your garden next year why not plan over the winter to implement in the spring and enjoy for next summer!

update on limitless academy of performing Arts

Limitless Academy of Performing Arts is settling in to our Royston community really rather well. Of course, it’s good to see the once forlorn building on Melbourn Street alive with youngsters and adults sporting their logo clad hoodies and jackets, dashing in and out over the weekends, but there’s a lot more going on at Limitless than many would think! Since opening their doors some seven months ago, they really are becoming a Royston asset. Market shoppers had their ears blessed with a number or two from a West End musical when Royston Market had the inspired idea of inviting them to perform there on a Saturday after hearing a couple of their very talented singers rehearsing, in addition Limitless will be performing at the Royston Market on the 14th December, don’t miss it!. They then popped up at the Royston Picture Palace, with an award winning performance of John Godber’s “Teechers”, which showed for just one night before heading off to the all England Winners Drama Festival Finals, and walking off with three trophies including best production. Then, lo and behold, Royston Arts Festival has a stage, and who should be performing and delighting the crowd with, among other songs,

a preview of their production of “Oliver”? Yes, Limitless. “Royston’s Got Talent”, it certainly has and among the many talents, we saw them there too. It seems they are able to deliver for their students, including adults, opportunities that are genuinely limitless, “Oliver!” all but sold out at Hertford theatre. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

How Well Do You Manage Your Time? In order to be in control of what you achieve, you must manage your time. For many people however, it seems that there’s just never enough time in the day. How many of the following 15 statements resonate with you? 1. The tasks I work on are the ones with the highest priority 2. I find myself completing tasks at the last minute, or asking for extensions 3. I set aside time for planning and scheduling 4. I know how much time I spend on each of the various tasks I do 5. I find myself dealing with interruptions 6. I use goal setting to decide what tasks and activities I should work on 7. I leave contingency time in my schedule to deal with the unexpected 8. I know whether the tasks I am working on are high, medium, or low value

9. When I am given a new assignment, I analyse it for importance and prioritise it accordingly 10. I am stressed about deadlines and commitments 11. Distractions keep me from working on critical tasks 12. I have to take work home in order to get it done 13. I prioritise my ‘To Do’ list 14. I confirm my priorities with my boss 15. Before I take on a task, I check that the results will be worth the time put in. We would all love to have an extra couple of hours in every day. Seeing as that is impossible, we need to work smarter on things that have the highest priority, and then creating a schedule that reflects our work and personal priorities.
