Friends of Therfield Heath The first Therfield Heath & Greens New Year Quiz will take place on 24th January 2020, 7.30pm at the Heath café. We’re challenging everyone in Royston to show off not only their general knowledge but also how much they know about the flora, fauna and history of our wonderful Heath! Ladies, if you would like to increase your circle of friends and interests our Women’s Institute Group is an excellent place to do so. We enjoy many social activities as well as informative and interesting speakers and appreciate being part of one of the most influential organisations in the nation. We meet on the second Thursday of the month at 1.45pm in Fellowship Hall next door to the Royston Picture Palace and you are most welcome to join us as a guest. We look forward to seeing you.
We are a friendly, welcoming group of men who train together for general fitness. After a good warm up we play basketball, do some circuit training and complete the evening with indoor football & volleyball.
We have no real age requirements but generally range from late 30s to whenever! Membership is kept to a level that fits the gym & we currently have some vacancies for new members who would like to keep fit while playing indoor sports. Local History Society
Our December meeting was entitled Live Forever! The Mystery and Magic of Egyptian Hieroglyphs, by Nick da Costa. Our packed audience were fascinated to hear, how Egyptian Hieroglyphs were the world’s first written language, in around 3200BC. The Egyptians also calculated the calendar, still in use today. Pictures were used in place of letters, for example bee and leaf is obviously belief and generally read from right to left. Our next meeting will be on January 2nd 2020, at 8pm, when the subject will be, Pomp and Circumstance by Chloe Cockerill, admission is £2, everyone welcome.

Once again, we have had a very successful year with a variety of speakers and events while raising money for the charity Essex and Hertfordshire Air Ambulance. In December, we celebrated Christmas with a service at Royston Methodist Church and all three WI groups in Royston took part in this event. As well as traditional Bible readings, we heard festive poems and sang carols. After the service, members enjoyed tea, coffee and seasonal nibbles. Our monthly meeting was a wonderful Christmas lunch held at the Heath Café Royston.

The Buckden Handbell Ringers hit the festive note with a medley of seasonal music at our November meeting. With a total of 54 handbells covering notes over four octaves from bass G to a top C, the precision and skill of the ten ringers was impressive. The Buckden group has been going strong for 40 years and is led by Miles and Pam Falla who assured us you don’t have to be able to play an instrument or read music to take up ringing. “I’m not a musical person and the first time my wife mentioned handbells I said I’d never be able to do it. That was 40 years ago and I’ve just loved it,” said Miles. The afternoon was such a success that chairman Jackie Gellert invited the group to come back to give us a training session. The next monthly meeting will be on 28th January with a talk by Mike Levy on the life of W S Gilbert. Meetings start at 2pm in the Town Hall.

Melbourn & District U3A meet monthly on the third Wednesday of the month. Our speaker is Brian Wass who will be talking about Policing - how it was done and is today Our U3A started in 1994 and now has around 500 members mainly drawn from South Cambridgeshire and North Hertfordshire. We comprise over 30 groups including yoga, walks, music, art, gardens and local history. These are informal, mutual and self-supporting rather than the teacher and student format. There are no exams, but there is much learning. Come to Melbourn Village College at 2.30 for 3pm and find out about our U3A as a guest for your first meeting.

Report on the Open Meeting of the Conservators of Therfield Heath and Greens, 3rd Dec 2019, Royston Town Hall
Our clubs, societies and organisations in Royston make a large contribution to the activities and vibrancy of our town.
This information has subsequently been shared with Royston First, who publish a printed Clubs and Associations brochure containing information on Royston’s clubs which can be picked up from the Royston Information Centre in Royston Library.
Questions were taken following each topic. It was announced that from January 2020, all those walking dogs on Therfield Heath for commercial gain will be expected to have bought a permit and all those running any form of outdoor fitness classes on site will need to do the same. On the first anniversary of the fire, the church is reaching out to friends, past and present, to consider sponsoring a chair as part of the fundraising programme. Sponsoring a chair will mean that a plaque will be displayed, with your own inscription on it. Families or local groups might want to have an inscription as their contribution to the heritage of the town. It might be a fitting tribute to someone who has passed away and who was a member of the community.

CADS Group is Full of Beans A much anticipated event in the town’s calendar is the annual Town Pantomime, and for 2020 local group Corvus Amateur Drama Society (CADS) is presenting Jack and the Beanstalk by Tom Whalley (who wrote this year’s hilarious Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates).

Volunteers have been preparing the site and contractors are now shaping the profile of the pond. This sepia postcard was produced and sold by WH Smith and is a good example of how a rural community like Royston would have looked just over a hundred years ago. The photographer has captured just the right moment when two horses and carts, with a third following behind, slowly descend the chalk white surface of the Barkway Road hill towards the town. On the reverse of the postcard the King George V green halfpenny stamp has been franked at Royston at 10pm on January 25th, 1912. The sender’s name is hard to make out, but it looks like Louise. She sent it to a friend called Gladys and it appears Gladys

officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps in the First World War. He was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, who having survived the battle of the Somme and then the Ypres offensive was tragically killed by a sniper some time later in 1917. In 1912, he lived with his wife and two children in Great Shelford and moved to Royston sometime later as his third child was born in town in 1914. So, from this we can surmise that Louise lived at Brooklands before the Ackroyd family arrived in the town. And that is the story of just one postcard, and I’m pretty sure there are some of you who can glean even more information than me from the Barkway Road photograph. Perhaps next time you visit a market, an antique shop, somewhere selling old postcards, pick up a picture that catches your eye, turn it over and have a read, you never know what stories it may reveal.

is on holiday in a village near Bury St Edmunds. Louise goes on to say, ‘isn’t the weather as awful’, adding that ‘the road to Barrington from Shepreth is all under water and has been since last Saturday so we hope to get across by the new bridge they made’. This would have been typical at the time, especially in the winter when roads would have commonly been difficult or impassable for traffic. The white chalk road in the photo is a good example, fine in the dry but challenging in wet or winter conditions. It’s worth noting that Nottingham was the first place in the world to have a tarmacadam surfaced road. That was in 1902 and it would be many years before the rest of the country would receive the same. Louise lived in the town, at Brooklands, 46 Kneesworth Street. The house was built in 1896 and interestingly it displays a blue plaque on its front wall. This was in honour of Captain Harold Ackroyd, a physician and

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Orange Cake
Hello my fellow foodies and welcome to not only to a brand new month but to a bright and shiny new year! I hope you all enjoyed the festivities with your nearest and dearest and are looking forward to all the possibilities 2020 may bring you.
This month I would like to share with you one of my favourite recipes for orange cake. This is slightly unconventional in its preparation, but the resulting cake is a light and fluffy in texture and rich, almost marmalade-like in flavour. It yields appropriately 12 large sized portions and is delicious both hot and cold. One final note; if you use gluten-free baking powder then this cake is great for anyone who wishes to eat gluten free. Orange cake 2 whole oranges scrubbed, and stalk removed 6 eggs from happy free running hens 225g caster sugar 200g ground Almonds 50g polenta 1 tsp baking powder Icing sugar to dust over Let’s begin by popping the two whole oranges into a pan of water and bringing it to the boil. Leave them to simmer for
two hours until they are soft to touch. Take care to top up the water level during the cooking time. Remove from the water and leave to cool. This step can be done a day or two in advance of making the cake. Next, turn on the oven to 180°C and lightly grease a 23cm round loose bottomed cake tin. Now cut the oranges in half and remove any pips, then place into the food processor and whizz until you have a smooth pulp consistency. In a separate bowl whisk the eggs yolks and caster sugar until pale in colour, thick, airy and mousse like in consistency. Combine the ground almonds, the polenta and the baking powder then fold these in with the orange purée and the egg yolk mixture.
All that remains to do is to carefully pour the mixture into the tin. Gently ‘wobble’ the tin to smooth the surface (again don’t bang or tap!) and pop it into the oven for approximately 45 minutes until it has risen and has a beautiful, golden brown surface. I would advise leaving the cake to settle for 20 minutes or so before taking it out of the tin, but it is delicious served warm with a small dollop of whipped cream or in large slices accompanied with a steaming cup of tea! In a separate and totally grease free bowl, whip the egg whites until they can stand in stiff peaks. Take a spoonful of the egg whites and mix it into the orange mix - this will help loosen up the mixture and make it easier to combine the rest of the egg white. Take care as you combine the remaining egg white into the mix - if you are too heavy handed, you will knock out the air from the mix which will result in a heavy pudding rather than a light and airy sponge.

Royston Arts Festival 2020 Dates Creative Royston are pleased to announce that the dates for the 2020 festival are Friday 18th to Sunday 27th September and that the festival theme will be ‘A Question of Balance’
We chose this theme partly as a play on the year 2020 and also in order to highlight the importance for everyone of well-being which can be achieved by correctly balancing the different priorities in our lives. As with the 2019 theme we hope that it provides an opportunity to engage with
important social issues whilst allowing flexibility for different artistic interpretations. As usual at this time of year we are looking for new members for our friendly committee and are always interested in hearing from anyone who wishes to become a volunteer for the festival. How To Use Plants... When To Plant by Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott
Happy New Year! In my new series of articles for 2020 I want to explore how to use plants over the year. For success in the garden it really is best to have a planting plan as part of your garden design. Then working with nature and the seasons will ensure the plants selected can thrive. Here are a few things to be thinking about for the New Year. Bare root is a great way to buy nursery stock during the winter. The plants are lifted from the ground and delivered without a pot. When planning the structural layout of a garden design I will consider hedge positions to delineate space, tree and rose positions. All these plants and many more are available bare root. This is how in generations past plants were supplied. Generally speaking the plants will also be cheaper leaving more in the budget for flouncy flowery herbaceous perennials, some of which can also be available bare root too. With a good planting plan as part of your garden design all this can be planned in advance. Root balled is another way of buying plants during the winter months. This, as the name suggests, is where the roots have been wrapped up into a ball. I like to use root balled shrubs in my planting plans as it is a great way to plant larger more cost effective plants. The end of last year I used many root balled shrubs in my last large project of the year and this really helped boost the maturity of the newly planted garden. Plants such as Corylus, Elaeagnus, Ilex, Kolkwitzia, Prunus, Taxus
and Viburnum all went in as root balls. Trees are also available as root balls too and help offer an instant feeling of maturity to a newly planted space. Planting p9’s is worth considering for hardy perennials. A p9 is a small pot size that hardy perennials can be bought in. We are so conditioned to buying 1 litre or 2 litre pot size hardy perennials but all the plant has been doing is filling the space in the pot when really it needs to be in the ground. In my experience if the ground has been prepared with organic compost smaller plants will grow away quickly as the soil temperature rise in the spring and easily fill the space. It comes back to working with nature to get the best results. If all the elements have been planned out then the planting will be a success. Bulb planting is a good way to introduce drifts of colour into the garden. This does require careful planning in the planting design as traditionally bulbs are available in the Autumn. Naturalising daffodils in grass can produce a lovely effect, but remember to put a note in the diary to order the bulbs in late summer for autumn delivery. It can be difficult to set out the plants in a new scheme knowing that some of the items will not be available until a later date. The best way to overcome this is by marking out the positions with a cane so that you allow the space. This way you will still have space to fit the Alliums or tulips into the layout despite potentially a season’s growth. One of my earliest professional
gardening memories is being sent out with a sack of daffodils by the head gardener to plant up a glade. I threw the bulbs out by hand and planted them where they fell. The effect in the spring was awesome.

The Listing caught up with her to hear more about the person behind the business. Where do you live? I have lived in this area for 27 years including in Bassingbourn, Buntingford and Whaddon. It’s a great place to settle and raise a family. What do you love about your work? The service I provide ranges from treating minor disorders, nail cutting and foot complaints to more serious and disabling problems. I love that every patient is different, and I have met and cared for hundreds of local people. I am lucky to work and drive around in this attractive location. It’s always a pleasure to see familiar patients and to put new ones at ease making them comfortable and keeping them mobile. It is very satisfying when patients express their gratitude following successful treatment. I enjoy being my own boss and running an independent business. Working flexibly in patients’ homes gives me the freedom to work around my family and other commitments. I am privileged to do work I enjoy, that feels worthwhile and I would like to thank my patients, some of whom have been with me for years, for making this possible. What is your most valued possession? My health - I think you appreciate and value your health more as you get older. I don’t
always do the right things but I do try to take a responsible approach towards my own well being and adopt healthy habits. I do believe that tomorrow’s health depends on today’s choices. My desert island must have possession... I guess I would have to say a decent pair of sharp nail clippers.
I love the twinkly lights to brighten the dark nights but all the baubles etc kind of add clutter. It’s good to get them in the loft and me back into my work routine following the hurly burly of Christmas.
What’s your favourite local place to eat? We have a diverse range of good eating establishments around here. Supporting local business is important to me, being able to walk to the village pub for a good meal is a bonus of where I live.
What is the best thing that has happened to you recently? I have found a wonderful person (in the Listing) to clean my oven. It sparkled like new in time to cook the Xmas dinner and saved me from a messy job that I really don’t like doing and I am not very good at.
What was the last book you read? ‘The New Silk Roads’ by Peter Frankopan. I was fascinated by his first book on the Silk Roads which helped me understand bits of history I never covered at school. This more contemporary book reminds us what a profoundly interconnected world we live in today. What makes you happy? Sunshine. Sharing joy and laughter. What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? I usually go to an exercise class to kick start my day then have a coffee and chat with my class buddies afterwards. Then followed by shopping and catching up on the chores so I can have the evening to relax with family and friends. What are you looking forward to most this month? New Years Eve celebrations with the start of a new decade, the roaring 20’s all over again maybe and then putting the decorations away.
