roystoN cave Group Is there a question about life that you carry around with you, that never gets resolved?
A group of local residents are using Royston Cave as a place to explore problems put forward by individuals, community groups and organisations in imaginative ways. The group would like to hear from you. We have placed small white post boxes around Royston where you can submit questions for the group to address. Your question can be about anything and it should be important to you. Look out for the post boxes and question cards at the Town Hall, the museum, the library, No 3 and Coombes Community Centre. This project is commissioned by Kettle’s Yard Gallery in Cambridge in collaboration with artist Marcus Coates, and is supported by Arts Council England. You can also send your question by email to ellen@kettlesyard.cam.ac.uk, and if you’re part of a group that would like to work with us to come up with a question together please get in touch.

Monthly Reads by Molly 100 hour weeks, no breaks and absolutely no room for sick days, Adam Kay highlights the struggles of NHS doctors in a first-hand diary account of his daily life: ‘This Is Going To Hurt’.
Kay, a British comedy writer who trained and worked as an NHS doctor from 2004 until 2010 felt a sense of duty to enlighten people on the gruelling day-today life himself and many others working in healthcare continue to experience. A complicated mix of joy, pain and sacrifice allows this book to grip you from the very first page in order to find some sense of order in Kay’s chaotic world. Tread carefully if you’re feeling squeamish or find the details of a maternity ward to much to bear. A tremendous addition to your bookshelf – you won’t regret it! The Benefits of Singing
Have you ever sung along to the radio on a sunny day or in the car as you travel alone? Do you sing in the bathroom and enjoy the way the sound echoes off the tiled surfaces? Have you ever sung a child to sleep? Singing releases endorphins, feel-good hormones for pleasure. It uses the full capacity of our lungs, which exercises the body. It requires concentration and memory to get it right, which exercises the ‘little grey cells’ in our brain. There are many openings in choirs or choruses and much fun to be had on a dark winter or summer evening – joining in and getting to know new people whilst enjoying a rewarding hobby. Singing for others is fun and giving concerts can be a highlight. Look around and find somewhere to join in today!

Out & About...
CADS Group is Full of Beans A much anticipated event in the town’s calendar is the annual Town Pantomime, and for 2020 local group Corvus Amateur Drama Society (CADS) is presenting Jack and the Beanstalk by Tom Whalley (who wrote this year’s hilarious Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates).
The show is being directed by Nicky Paton, whom many readers will know either from his previous appearances on stage or as Manager of the Royston Cave or as a member of the committee of Creative Royston (and compere at this year’s hugely enjoyable and groundbreaking burlesque evening at the Old Bull!) The story features fearless juvenile Jack, his ‘daft-as-a-brush’ brother Simple Simon, and his long suffering mother Dame Trott, all of whom live in a tiny cottage in the shadow of the terrible giant Blunderbore. With the rent overdue they have no choice but to sell their beloved pet cow Daisy. After tricking the Trotts into selling her for a bag of worthless beans, the villainous henchman Fleshcreep kidnaps the Princess for the giant’s supper... Could Jack be the hero the village has been waiting for? Will he be able to rescue Daisy and Princess Jill in time? Perhaps those beans aren’t as worthless as they seemed!
Jack and the Beanstalk is being performed at King James Academy, Senior Site (formerly Meridian School) on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th and Friday 31st January and Saturday 1st February, with evening performances at 7.30 and matinees on both Saturdays at 2.00. Tickets are £12 each (or £6 for OAPs, children and students) and can be bought online via the group’s website www.cadsroyston.org.uk or by ringing the CADS box office on 07925 674967.

Nicky says, “I still remember watching my first CADS pantomime at the age of seven and being completely enthralled by its magic. I’ve since been lucky enough to be a part of them and now I’m thrilled to be making my directorial debut in this iconic pantomime. (Oh yes I am!) It feels like a giant responsibility to live up to the extraordinary shows that have preceded it, but I’m lucky enough to have the support of the most wonderful team and an exceptionally talented cast. I can’t wait to share their magic with the Royston audience!”
Nicky and musical director Louise Atkins have been working hard for weeks now with a cast that includes many regular CADS members, as well as a supporting chorus – including a few new faces - that represents some of the area’s talented youngsters.

Loving Local Living
Monday 25th January, 1912 Every picture tells a story, and that is also true of a photograph. If that photograph is on a postcard, a postcard that has been sent to someone, it could reveal an even bigger story. This sepia postcard was produced and sold by WH Smith and is a good example of how a rural community like Royston would have looked just over a hundred years ago. The photographer has captured just the right moment when two horses and carts, with a third following behind, slowly descend the chalk white surface of the Barkway Road hill towards the town. On the reverse of the postcard the King George V green halfpenny stamp has been franked at Royston at 10pm on January 25th, 1912. The sender’s name is hard to make out, but it looks like Louise. She sent it to a friend called Gladys and it appears Gladys is on holiday in a village near Bury St Edmunds. Louise goes on to say, ‘isn’t the weather as awful’, adding that ‘the road to Barrington from Shepreth is all under water and has been since last Saturday so we hope to get across by the new bridge they made’. This would have been typical at the time, especially in the winter when roads would have commonly been difficult or impassable for traffic. The white chalk road in the photo is a good example, fine in the dry but challenging in wet or winter conditions. It’s worth noting that Nottingham was the first place in the world to have a
12
tarmacadam surfaced road. That was in 1902 and it would be many years before the rest of the country would receive the same. Louise lived in the town, at Brooklands, 46 Kneesworth Street. The house was built in 1896 and interestingly it displays a blue plaque on its front wall. This was in honour of Captain Harold Ackroyd, a physician and officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps in the First World War. He was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, who having survived the battle of the Somme and then the Ypres offensive was tragically killed by a sniper some time later in 1917. In 1912, he lived with his wife and two children in Great Shelford and moved to Royston sometime later as his third child was born in town in 1914. So, from this we can surmise that Louise lived at Brooklands before the Ackroyd family arrived in the town. And that is the story of just one postcard, and I’m pretty sure there are some of you who can glean even more information than me from the Barkway Road photograph. Perhaps next time you visit a market, an antique shop, somewhere selling old postcards, pick up a picture that catches your eye, turn it over and have a read, you never know what stories it may reveal. bURNS nIGHT Burns Night is a celebration of the life and poetry of the Scotsman Robert Burns, whom the Burns Road estate in Royston is named after. Burns Suppers are a true Scottish spectacle. After a few speeches, an Address tae the Haggis is recited with the speaker plunging his knife into the haggis to open it end to end. Then follows a feast of haggis, neeps & tatties; washed down with a liberal serving of whisky and wine. The evening is rounded off with dessert, coffee and an Address to the Lassies and a Reply to the Laddies. Scottish or not, why not host your own take of a Burns Supper this January? If nothing else, it’s an excuse to socialise with those closest to you, drink your favourite drinks and tuck into a delicious meal.

The villagers assumed that the old man was a deity who had come to save them. Now, Chinese New Year is celebrated with family at an annual reunion meal, similar to Thanksgiving supper in the US. After dinner, many go to local temples to pray for a prosperous year ahead and then at midnight, firecrackers and fireworks are set loose. The whole celebrations last for about 23 days, so why not get yourself involved?

According to myth, Chinese New Year started when an old man, Yanhuang, proclaimed he would protect a village against a mythical beast named Nian. The Nian would eat villagers, especially children, in the middle of the night. Yanhuang set off firecrackers and put up red papers and to the relief of the villagers, the Nian did not return.

Orange Cake
Hello my fellow foodies and welcome to not only to a brand new month but to a bright and shiny new year! I hope you all enjoyed the festivities with your nearest and dearest and are looking forward to all the possibilities 2020 may bring you. This month I would like to share with you one of my favourite recipes for orange cake. This is slightly unconventional in its preparation, but the resulting cake is a light and fluffy in texture and rich, almost marmalade-like in flavour. It yields appropriately 12 large sized portions and is delicious both hot and cold. One final note; if you use gluten-free baking powder then this cake is great for anyone who wishes to eat gluten free. Orange cake 2 whole oranges scrubbed, and stalk removed 6 eggs from happy free running hens 225g caster sugar 200g ground Almonds 50g polenta 1 tsp baking powder Icing sugar to dust over Let’s begin by popping the two whole oranges into a pan of water and bringing it to the boil. Leave them to simmer for two hours until they are soft to touch. Take care to top up the water level during the cooking time. Remove from the water and leave to cool. This step can be done a day or two in advance of making the cake.
ground almonds, the polenta and the baking powder then fold these in with the orange purée and the egg yolk mixture. In a separate and totally grease free bowl, whip the egg whites until they can stand in stiff peaks. Take a spoonful of the egg whites and mix it into the orange mix - this will help loosen up the mixture and make it easier to combine the rest of the egg white. Take care as you combine the remaining egg white into the mix - if you are too heavy handed, you will knock out the air from the mix which will result in a heavy pudding rather than a light and airy sponge. All that remains to do is to carefully pour the mixture into the tin. Gently ‘wobble’ the tin to smooth the surface (again don’t bang or tap!) and pop it into the oven for approximately 45 minutes until it has risen and has a beautiful, golden brown surface. I would advise leaving the cake to settle for 20 minutes or so before taking it out of the tin, but it is delicious served warm with a small dollop of whipped cream or in large slices accompanied with a steaming cup of tea! Until next time dear reader...
Talullah Le Fey
Next, turn on the oven to 180°C and lightly grease a 23cm round loose bottomed cake tin. Now cut the oranges in half and remove any pips, then place into the food processor and whizz until you have a smooth pulp consistency. In a separate bowl whisk the eggs yolks and caster sugar until pale in colour, thick, airy and mousse like in consistency. Combine the 22

Getting Festive at Tannery Drift School It’s been a busy few weeks at Tannery Drift First School in the run up to Christmas.
From raising more than £2,000 for Children in Need with a Bounce-a-thon to a festive Christmas Fair. The highlights have to be the Christmas Performances from children in Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1. The final week of school included a visiting Pantomime from Imajica Theatre Group for all the School to enjoy, from Nursery to Year 4. We are constantly looking for new ways to allow all children to show their strengths and encourage every child to feel capable, be independent and love learning. Please remember to submit your Reception and Nursery applications by 15th January 2020.
MUSEUM MUSINGS: We’ve Been Busy! Welcome to 2020!
We’ve been busy changing some of our displays – come and see for yourself! We want to highlight some different things from our brilliant collection and give the things that have been on display for a few years, a little rest. We’ve teamed up with Royston Cave to show more objects found there. The Cave is closed at the moment but come to the museum to see the displays until it reopens. We’re looking forward to working with Girl Guides who are celebrating 100 years in Royston. We’ll be bringing new artists to our gallery. We’ve got lots of crafty ideas.
Reception applications must be made online via www.hertfordshire.gov.uk Nursery applications can be made directly to Tannery Drift First School via our website at www.bit.ly/TanneryAdmissions
Here’s something we like the sound of from our collection; a steamer for making RolyPolys! This was used by the same family from 1920 to 1993. How many Roly-Polys did they get through?! We’ll be searching our collections for more random items over the year. www.roystonmuseum.org.uk

The new logo for the Conservators The meeting was attended by approximately 60 was unveiled. A competition was held at King members of the public who heard presentations James Academy and the winner Charlotte Lan came to the meeting to be congratulated and from the Conservators as well as Robert Law to see how her design had been worked into a (who grazes the Heath) and the Friends of logo by a local artist. Therfield Heath. 2
Topics covered included fundraising, the accounts, grazing, the visitor survey and working with Natural England as well as permits and the new logo. Questions were taken following each topic. It was announced that from January 2020, all those walking dogs on Therfield Heath for commercial gain will be expected to have bought a permit and all those running any form of outdoor fitness classes on site will need to do the same. The idea was positively received by the meeting. Further information and application forms are on the website www.therfieldheath.org.uk.
In addition from cash and cheque donations users of the Heath will be able to make online donations from January with a link on our website. The attached shows Charlotte’s original design, the proposed logo and a version for a car sticker for commercial users and regular donators.
The next meeting will be the Annual General Meeting held in February, where elections also take place for one stintholder representative and one representative for the Special Drainage District of Royston. The date will be announced in the new year.

Think Garden, Think Richard
How To Use Plants... When To Plant by Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott
Happy New Year! In my new series of articles for 2020 I want to explore how to use plants over the year. For success in the garden it really is best to have a planting plan as part of your garden design. Then, working with nature and the seasons will ensure the plants selected can thrive. Here are a few things to be thinking about for the New Year. Bare root is a great way to buy nursery stock during the winter. The plants are lifted from the ground and delivered without a pot. When planning the structural layout of a garden design I will consider hedge positions to delineate space, tree and rose positions. All these plants and many more are available bare root. This is how in generations past plants were supplied. Generally speaking the plants will also be cheaper leaving more in the budget for flouncy flowery herbaceous perennials, some of which can also be available bare root too. With a good planting plan as part of your garden design all this can be planned in advance. Root balled is another way of buying plants during the winter months. This, as the name suggests, is where the roots have been wrapped up into a ball. I like to use root balled shrubs in my planting plans as it is a great way to plant larger more cost effective plants. The end of last year I used many root balled shrubs in my last large project of the year and this really helped boost the maturity of the newly planted garden. Plants such as Corylus, Elaeagnus, Ilex, Kolkwitzia, Prunus, Taxus and Viburnum all went in as root balls. Trees are also available as root balls too and help offer an instant feeling of maturity to a newly planted space. Planting p9’s is worth considering for hardy perennials. A p9 is a small pot size that hardy perennials can be bought in. We are so conditioned to buying 1 litre or 2 litre pot size hardy perennials but all the plant has been doing is filling the space in the pot when really it needs to be in the ground. In my experience if the ground has been prepared with organic compost smaller plants will grow away quickly as the soil temperature rise in the spring and easily fill the space. It comes back to working with nature to get the best results. If all the elements have been planned out then the planting will be a success. Bulb planting is a good way to introduce drifts of colour into the garden. This does require careful planning in the planting design as traditionally bulbs are available in the Autumn. Naturalising daffodils in grass can produce a lovely effect, but remember to put a note in the diary to order the bulbs in late summer for autumn delivery. It can be difficult to set out the
30
plants in a new scheme knowing that some of the items will not be available until a later date. The best way to overcome this is by marking out the positions with a cane so that you allow the space. This way you will still have space to fit the Alliums or tulips into the layout despite potentially a season’s growth. One of my earliest professional gardening memories is being sent out with a sack of daffodils by the head gardener to plant up a glade. I threw the bulbs out by hand and planted them where they fell. The effect in the spring was awesome. Specialist pruning to make space for new planting needs to be considered at the correct time of year. Winter is a busy time in the garden for pruning deciduous shrubs before the spring. Regenerative pruning where you cut into the old wood to reinvigorate shrubs in a neglected garden can be very beneficial. Structural pruning of Wisteria, vines and climbing roses will help set the scene for planting beneath. If you are thinking of making changes to your garden this year why not plan over the winter to implement in the spring and to enjoy this summer! For more in depth advice or garden design help please get in touch to arrange a consultation.

Looking After you: New Years Resolutions Setting goals instead of resolutions this New Year‌
Setting a New Years resolution is a promise that you make to yourself to start doing something good or stop doing something not so good on the first day of the year. When you break it down, it can feel very exciting but making a comittment for the next 365 days can be very daunting too. Are we setting ourselves up for failure? The last few years I decided to set goals to achieve in several areas of my life rather then just one strict resolution. Usually I begin the process of making notes for what goals I want to achieve, I break them down into categories of work, personal and health. Listing things I would like to see be achieved in these areas of my life and then see if they would realistically happen before the end of the year. Once I have an idea of what goals I
would like to set, I may add a time in the year ahead of when I would like this to be achieved. Beginning the year this way means you can revisit your list of goals every time you feel you need some direction and this way you are setting realistic expectations upon yourself with a whole year to work towards them rather than instantly expecting to find perfection from day one and sustain for the next 12 months. My Local Life
Virginia Partridge
Virginia offers a mobile professional foot care service, visiting your home in Royston or most of the surrounding villages to take care of your feet and foot problems. The Listing caught up with her to hear more about the person behind the business. Where do you live? I have lived in this area for 27 years including in Bassingbourn, Buntingford and Whaddon. It’s a great place to settle and raise a family. What do you love about your work? The service I provide ranges from treating minor disorders, nail cutting and foot complaints to more serious and disabling problems. I love that every patient is different, and I have met and cared for hundreds of local people. I am lucky to work and drive around in this attractive location. It’s always a pleasure to see familiar patients and to put new ones at ease making them comfortable and keeping them mobile. It is very satisfying when patients express their gratitude following successful treatment. I enjoy being my own boss and running an independent business. Working flexibly in patients’ homes gives me the freedom to work around my family and other commitments. I am privileged to do work I enjoy, that feels worthwhile and I would like to thank my patients, some of whom have been with me for years, for making this possible. What is your most valued possession? My health - I think you appreciate and value your health more as you get older. I don’t always do the right things but I do try to take a responsible approach towards my own well being and adopt healthy habits. I do believe that tomorrow’s health depends on today’s choices. My desert island must have possession... I guess I would have to say a decent pair of sharp nail clippers. What’s your favourite local place to eat? We have a diverse range of good eating establishments around here. Supporting local business is important to me, being able to walk to the village pub for a good meal is a bonus of where I live. What was the last book you read? ‘The New Silk Roads’ by Peter Frankopan. I was fascinated by his first book on the Silk Roads which helped me understand bits of history I never covered at school. This more contemporary book reminds us what a profoundly interconnected world we live in today.
What makes you happy? Sunshine. Sharing joy and laughter. What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? I usually go to an exercise class to kick start my day then have a coffee and chat with my class buddies afterwards. Then followed by shopping and catching up on the chores so I can have the evening to relax with family and friends. What are you looking forward to most this month? New Years Eve celebrations with the start of a new decade, the roaring 20’s all over again maybe and then putting the decorations away. I love the twinkly lights to brighten the dark nights but all the baubles etc kind of add clutter. It’s good to get them in the loft and me back into my work routine following the hurly burly of Christmas. What is the best thing that has happened to you recently? I have found a wonderful person (in the Listing) to clean my oven. It sparkled like new in time to cook the Xmas dinner and saved me from a messy job that I really don’t like doing and I am not very good at. How do you relax? Way too easily. A good book, music and a G&T always helps. Four people you would invite to dinner? Bruce Springsteen so we can rock on after eating. Graham Norton to bring out the best in each guest and facilitate the flow of conversation. Hans Rosling (sadly no longer with us) a hopeful fact man to tell us why things are better than we think they are. A chef to cook, well it’s my night off; Nigella would do and will bring additional feminine charm to the party. Could I sneak in my two young adult offspring as well please, they would enjoy the food! What inspirational quote sums you up? ‘Be kind whenever possible, It is always possible.’

Business Profile
Free, Expert Advice
In the 1990’s it was discovered that we have an Endocannabinoid system that requires CBD to function properly. We have CB1 and CB2 receptors in our bodies which when given sufficient Cannabinoids (CBD Oil) it starts to work properly. It sends signals to the body to produce things like anti-inflammatories, hormones, enzymes etc and you start to see a huge difference in the way you feel. The reason you are deficient is that Hemp was banned in the
1920’s and this is where we got most of our CBD from. Profit was the reason, Hemp can replace the oil, paper, medicinal, cotton and many other things in a much cheaper way. Now it is back and you can flourish in the knowledge that we provide one of the best oils in the market. If you would like to know how this oil could help you or your loved ones please text CBD info to 07875 044405 or 07855 520487

Royston Rotary Round-up
What a busy month we had in December! We toured the streets in Santa’s sleigh, many of us became Santa for a day at a certain local farm shop, we decorated trees at retirement homes, we supported Hope and Homes for Children’s annual carol service, and we enjoyed our Christmas dinner together. Spreading comfort and joy is one of the things we do best! As soon as New Year’s done, we’re looking forward to our annual Quiz on 11th January at King James’s Academy – one of the year’s biggest and best, we think. There may be tables still available, so please call Peter Ross on 01763 244781 for bookings. The Memory Café meets on 13th January, when we shall be back in our usual home, The Old Barn in Upper Kneesworth Street. Old friends and new faces welcome! www.roystonrotary.com
Age UK Hertfordshire Age UK Hertfordshire is an independent local charity working to alleviate loneliness and isolation, reduce poverty and build resilience for older people in Hertfordshire.
They run a number of services in North Herts including Day Centres and their very popular Visiting Scheme. The scheme matches older people with carefully matched volunteers who visit them weekly to chat and provide some extra company. Many older people feel vulnerable going out alone and so our Volunteers make a real difference to people like Rae, ‘I like to be outside doing things, going to the shops or just sitting outside having a coffee, we have the most beautiful park nearby, and we often go there and share an afternoon tea. We talk about family, world news and politics.’ If you know someone who might like to have a visiting volunteer or would like more information on their services email at volunteering@ageukherts.org.uk or call us on 01707 323272

Happy New Business YEar Here are eight New Year’s resolutions to help you to strike a better work-life balance and increase your business success. 1. Learn to delegate and do more of it You don’t have to do everything yourself. Let someone else do some of the tasks for a change. Delegation is the key to a healthy work-life balance. 2. Promote your business regularly and consistently Don’t let promotion slip to the bottom of the list. If you want to attract new customers, you have to make promotion a priority. 3. Make business planning a weekly event Business planning lets you take stock of what worked and what didn’t, set new goals and adjust old ones. Set aside time each week to review, finetune, and look forward. 4. Learn something new Learning something new will add to your skills and add a new dimension to your life—another important part of achieving a healthy work-life balance and increasing your business success.
5. Give back to your community Make this the year that you serve on a committee, be a mentor, a volunteer, or make regular donations to the community groups that try to make the place you live better. 6. Join a new business organisation or networking group There’s nothing like talking to other business people for sparking new ideas, refining old ones, and making contacts. Whatever group you join, making an effort to be a part of it will revitalise you and your business. 7. Put time for yourself on your calendar All work and no play is a recipe for mental and physical disaster – write time regularly into your diary to ‘meet with yourself’. 8. Set realistic goals Set achievable goals, rather than unrealistic pipe dreams that are so far out of reach they only lead to frustration. Here’s to a happy and profitable new year! julian@julianberry.co.uk
