Heroes & Villains Trail From witches to war-heroes: as you wander round town, discover some of Royston’s most colourful characters. Look out for the specially created depictions on fifteen ceramic plaques and discover the real-life stories behind them.

This art trail has been specially commissioned by Creative Royston. Royston & District Local History Society and Royston Museum researched fifteen notable people and artist Liz Beardwell created images, based on known-portraits where they could be found. The tiles have been painted by Able, Gift and Talented students from Roysia, Greneway, and Meridian Schools. Our thanks go to Glazed Creations for their support in creating the tiles and all the owners of the properties which are displaying the trail. 1. Methodist Church Thomas Cartwright (1535-1603) The father of English Presbyteriansim. He was imprisoned for his beliefs. 2. Taylor & Co. King James 1 (1566-1625) First king of the UK. He held court in his hunting lodge in Royston. 3. Cambridge Wines Christina & Alice Stokes (d.1604) Royston innkeepers, hanged for witchcraft. 4. Curwens William Parker (1575-1622) Averted the gunpowder plot and saved the King. 5. Abbot Travel Beech Wood Is it really possible that he died of a broken heart? 6. Market Hill Surgery John Gatward (d.1757) Highwayman who held up the mail on the A10. He was hanged nearby. 7.Library Henry Andrews (1744-1820) Respected astronomer and mathematician 8. Royston Cave Joseph Beldam (1795-1866) Counsel to the Anti-Slavery Society. Wrote a book on the Royston Cave. 9. Royston Health Centre Joseph Towne (1806-1879) Medical model-maker for Guy’s Hospital. 10. Market Hill Rooms Jack Halstead (1897-1963) An ordinary gunner in World War 1. His diary has been published.


11. Priory Memorial Gardens gate Harold Ackroyd VC (1877-1917) A World War 1 doctor who saved many men but was shot by a sniper. 12. Royston Museum EH Whydale (1886-1952) The well-known painter and etcher of horses and rural scenes. 13. The Old Barn Willie Stephenson (1911-1985) Racehorse trainer. His horses won both the Derby and Grand National. 14. Greneway School Alison Balsom (b.1978) Internationally-acclaimed trumpet player. Started out in Royston. 15. Town Hall John Warren (1818-1884) Founder of ‘The Royston Crow’, local fundraiser and supporter of the arts.
