WELCOME

CONTENTS

To the June issue of The Listing

June sees the return of the popular event, Royston Open Secrets on Therfield Heath. Open Secrets is an annual event for all the family to enjoy, showcasing all that the Royston area has to offer. It’s a great way to meet the small businesses and organisations, many of whom don’t have a shop front. Expect arena displays, activities, a classic car show and an agility course for dogs. You can find out more at www.open-secrets.co.uk Also on the Heath is Royston in Blue, the 5k family fun run/walk in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. Last year over 800 people took part, creating a wave of blue across the Heath and raising over £25000 for Teenage Cancer Trust in the process. The event is made possible thanks to the generous support of Royston businesses, which means that all entry fees and sponsorship raised goes direct to the charity. Join in the fun on 23rd June, more info www.roystoninblue.co.uk Look out too for the fetes and markets throughout the villages: Melbourn, Barkway, Therfield and Orwell have organised traditional events including an Open Gardens, with activities and fun for all. Of course all we need now is the sunshine! But with true Brit grit, we will enjoy all events and make them a success The Listing whatever the weather - we look forward to seeing you out and is online at about in June. www.thelisting. With best wishes, info from 1st every month

Meldreth Local History Group’s latest project will begin in earnest this month, when ten test pits are dug at various locations around the village on the weekend of 8th and 9th June. Over 40 volunteers will be involved each day. MLHG has received an Heritage Lottery Fund All Our Stories grant to finance the project, which it hopes will reveal information about how the village developed and evolved. The Group is working closely with Cambridge University’s Cambridge Community Heritage (CCH) team and Dr Carenza Lewis, head of CCH and former Time Team presenter, has already made several visits to the village in connection with the project. Several of the pits will be open to the public, so please come along and have a look at what we are digging up! Locations will be published on our website, www. meldrethhistory.org.uk, closer to the time but will include pits at the British Queen, Flambards Close, Fieldgate Nurseries and Chiswick End. Just look out for the blue and white balloons around the village which will mark our public digs, or speak to one of our volunteers that weekend. More test pits will be dug on 6th/7th July and 17th/18th August. For more information visit www.meldrethhistory.org.uk or contact Kathryn Betts on (01763) 268428 or email info@meldrethhistory.org.uk.

QUALITY TOWN COUNCIL

ISSUE NO.26

JUNE 2013

Keeping Royston residents in touch with their local council

Royston May Fayre

Mayor of Royston 2013 to 2014

After the terrible disappointment of last year’s cancelled May Fayre, it was wonderful to see huge crowds enjoying a wonderful day at the Royston May Fayre in gloriously warm and sunny weather! On one of our best ever attended Fayres, families enjoyed all the fun of many interactive events, such as the hugely popular trampoline bungee jump, bouncy castles, fun fair and Punch and Judy shows, to name just a few. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Susan, our Town Clerk, the May Fayre Committee and the volunteers for all their hard work and commitment in staging this annual town event and producing such an excellent May Fayre for residents to enjoy.

I am truly honoured to have been given the opportunity to be Mayor of Royston. Looking back at the past Mayors, I will have a tough act to follow but will do my very best to uphold their fine examples and am looking forward to representing Royston Town in a civic capacity. The Royston Town Council Coat of Arms carries the motto “A bonis ad meliora” which means “From good things to better” and this is something which I shall always bear in mind and hope that residents and businesses will join with me in trying to achieve. My chosen charity for the year is CLIC Sargent Cancer Care for Children who provide clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to help children and young people, and their families, cope with cancer and get the most out of life. They are there from diagnosis onwards and aim to help the whole family deal with the impact of cancer and its treatment, life after treatment and, in some cases, bereavement. CLIC Sargent has a team based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital offering support to Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire patients.

New and Improved Annual Town Meeting Tuesday 5 March saw Royston Town Council introduce some new innovations to the Annual Town Meeting to make the evening more special for Community Service Award winners. Refreshments were served before the meeting began and the Town Mayor, Cllr Lindsay Davidson, introduced each award winner with an extensive biography about them and why they had been given a community award and then interviewed each one afterwards. It all proved to be a great success and the six award winners said afterwards that they had really appreciated being given that extra time during the meeting and being able to tell everyone a little bit about themselves. Royston Town Council felt it was very important to give residents the chance to learn as much as possible about these local heroes and show them the full honour and respect they deserve for the many years of excellent service each one had given to our town. There was a very good attendance in the Town Hall that night and feedback afterwards was very positive about the more personalized format. Community Service Awards went to: Maurice Hill, for services to Royston Runners; Tracy Aggett, services to Royston Methodist Church; Margaret Coates, services to St John's Parish Church; ; Mayor Cllr Lindsay Davidson; Carole Kaszak, services to Royston and District Museum; Sally Jones, services to Royston Town Twinning; Mike Sweetlove, reading the Royston Crow for the Blind.

Half of the charity funds raised will go to CLIC Sargent and the other half to the Royston Town Mayor’s Community Trust Fund which awards grants to worthy local organisations within Royston. I am planning several fund raising events throughout the year which will be publicised nearer the times and hope that residents and local businesses will be able to support me in raising funds for these deserving charities. Donations can be made at any time directly to the Royston Town Mayor’s Community Trust Fund at the Town Hall, where Gift Aid forms are available in order to reclaim tax. Alternatively, on line donations can be made at: https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/roystonma yorcommunitytrustfund Cllr Robert Smith

With thanks to our sponsors

Royston Museum goes back to the Stone Age On Saturday 9 March, Royston and District Museum was the venue for an exciting Stone Age experience for children. Organized by Clive and James Dilley, who were two of the original leaders of the Time Trackers children’s archaeology group, in conjunction with the museum, the interior was transformed into a Stone Age activity zone. A replica wooden hut was built using deerskins and rods. Other activities included hand art, making rope from Yucca leaves with flint scrapers, making Yucca paint brushes for using with replica Stone Age paints, pottery workshops, and also seeing what a Shaman head dress made from bones was like. Nearly 250 visitors both from Royston and beyond came along for this very unusual and informative day and our thanks must go to the Museum Curator, Carole Kaszak and her team, as well as Clive and James for all their hard work in creating such an enjoyable event. We also would like to take this opportunity to extend our very best wishes for the future and deepest thanks to Carole Kaszak, as she retired in March after many years of committed service to the Museum and to her assistant Anstey Garrick Green who also left in March to have her second baby.

Town Councillors were treated to a very special preview of Royston’s new cinema facility at Royston Town Hall. The Royston Picture Palace, which is being jointly funded by Royston First and Royston Town Council, will soon be opening its doors to the public.

ROYSTON TOWN COUNCILLORS A list of all Councillors’ names and contact numbers is given below, together with details of the wards they represent. All Town Councillors serve in a voluntary capacity and are elected for a 4 year term of office. Councillors are not paid and do not receive any allowance for attending meetings.

Palace Ward: Cllr Martin Beaver Cllr Lynn Berry Cllr Elizabeth Freeman Cllr Robert Inwood Cllr Philip Mayne Meridian Ward: Cllr Paul Grimes Cllr Mike Harrison Cllr Marguerite Phillips Cllr F John Smith Cllr Robert Smith Heath Ward: Cllr Peter Burt Cllr Lindsay Davidson Cllr John Davison Cllr Victoria Hulström-Allen Cllr Graham Palmer

Cllr Marguerite Phillips is

this year’s Deputy Mayor and sits on the Planning and General Purposes and Highways Committees and is a representative on the May Fayre and Sport Royston Committees. Why did you stand for election as a Town Councillor? I have always been involved in local life in one way or another as I think it is important to make a useful contribution to the community. For many years I helped to run a large and successful swimming club in the London area and was a swimming official. What is the best thing about being a councillor? I feel that I am making a difference in getting the opinions of the people of Royston heard, especially in matters relating to planning. I want to help to protect the beautiful countryside that we have in this county from overdevelopment. I also enjoy designing and preparing the Town Crier newsletter. How long have you lived in Royston? We moved here from Pinner, Middlesex in 2004 to be nearer to our daughter who already lived here and also because we loved the area.

What is your occupation? I have worked in education for 23 years now and am an IT Technician in a large secondary school. However, I have just reduced my working week in order to help care for my elderly parents. What family do you have? Ray and I have three daughters, two of whom live in Royston and the other in Rickmansworth – two weddings down and one to go! We have two grandsons, one who lives and goes to school here in Royston and the other who likes coming to stay with “big nanny”. Do you have any hobbies? I am quite creative and artistic and am hoping to find the time to take up painting again. I read a lot and love my Kindle, mainly because if I finish a book late at night or while away on holiday I can just download another!

Enjoy Your Favourites at Palazzo

Catch up with friends and family over a Mediterranean meal in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Palazzo Recipe of the Month: Insalata Tricolore This week Italy celebrates Festa Della Repubblica, the remembrance day by which the nation gained independence by voting out the monarchy after the fall of Fascism in 1946. The day is celebrated with food and wine festivals in the patriotic red, white and green colors of Italy, such as the classic Insalata Tricolore...

Ingredients • • • • • •

2 avocados 200g smoked salmon Tin of beetroot in own juices 1 lemon 250g cream cheese Seasoning

Method 1. Open the beetroot and reserve the beetroot pieces for another day. Soak the smoked salmon in beetroot juice for 30mins then drain off. 2. Meanwhile prepare the avocado. Slice in half lengthways and pull the two halves apart. Using a spoon gently pluck out the stone and place the avocado flat side down on a chopping board. 3. From the top of the avocado make slices across approximately half a centimeter thick so that you end up with roughly eight short “C” shaped pieces. 4. Run a piece of lemon around the inside of a medium sized ramekin and arrange the avocado into the bottom to make a flat covered surface. The lemon will stop the avocado from going brown. 5. Next mix the cream cheese in a bowl with a pinch of salt and cracked pepper and a slight squeeze of lemon juice. 6. Add a layer of the cream cheese mixture on top of the avocado in the ramekin about 1cm in thickness. 7. Top the cream cheese mixture with the beetroot-infused salmon to make the third layer, then cover and refrigerate for 10 minutes to set. 8. When you are ready to serve the dish run a warm knife around the inside of the ramekin and turn out on a plate, and complement with slices of beef tomato, sliced buffalo mozzarella and sprigs of basil topped with olive oil. A truly colorful dish! Buon Appetito!

ROYSTON ARTS FESTIVAL: Pianists take up the challenge

A SPECIALLY composed piece of music is to be performed at a Royston Arts Festival Occasional Event concert this June. The talented pianists, the Cann Twins, will include the work in a concert at the Royston Parish Church on Friday 28 June. The work, The Gaudete Suite, was written by Michael Elliott to commemorate the 850th anniversary of the building of the Augustinian Priory in Royston. Other works to be included in the concert will be by Mozart, Liszt, Bizet and George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The concert will be supporting cHALLenge, the group raising cash to provide a parish hall. Claire and Antoinette Cann said, “We’re delighted that the concert is supporting cHALLenge as the new Parish Hall will be a wonderful facility for the whole community.” The Cann Twins have travelled the world giving recitals and the Doha Times describes their performance as ‘world class’. Tickets cost £10 (£8 concessions) and £5 (under-19 and student) and are available online at www.roystonartsfestival.org or Julia Garfit on 01763 242137.

This year’s Royston Arts Festival will run from September 21 – September 29. If you would like to volunteer during the Festival, please contact Tina Filby at volunteers@ roystonartsfestival.org

In May we held a members’ evening, when we discussed the two mandates to be put forward to National Conference in June. The first mandate ‘to support a change in the law to allow terminally ill, mentally competent people to have a right to an assisted death’ produced many differing views. The second mandate ‘the current reliance on modern technology leaves those who are unable to access and/or afford said technology at a disadvantage’. This was generally supported. The evening ended on a lighter note with members producing their own artwork for our special “Turnip (Turner) prize. The winner, Joy Surtees, was presented with a decorated turnip! Our speaker next month will be demonstrating and talking about ‘The Wonderful World of Willow’. Royston Townswomen’s Guild meet on the first Friday of each month and if you would like to know more about our friendly, welcoming group do please contact our Chairman, Elizabeth Hollamby on 01763 246347.

Mums and dads of under-fives are being encouraged to come along to new, sociable fitness sessions in Royston. The ‘Buggycise’ sessions are aimed at parents of babies and toddlers who would enjoy spending an hour a week with likeminded people, getting fit alongside their little ones. Based outdoors, mums or dads can get their exercise without the need for a babysitter while the children get some healthy fresh air. Organised by NHDC, which supports the sessions in partnership with Royston and Villages Children’s Centre, they take place every Wednesday morning from 9.30am to 10.30am on Therfield Heath until 17th July. Sessions include aerobic and resistance exercise as well as activities to enhance core strength and posture, all tailored to each individual’s abilities. Parents with children under five are welcome and there is no need to book in advance. The first session is free, ÂŁ2.50 a week thereafter. Buggies are not compulsory! Royston & Villages Children’s Centre Manager, Mandy Dockery, added: â€?These classes have been very popular with our parents, as they are fun, friendly and for all types of fitness levels. Parents have said they feel fitter, have made new friends and had a lot of fun!â€?

WI AM

It was both a sad but happy occasion at our yearly AGM in May when our existing president Denise Graham stood down owing to other work commitments. From donations given by our members we were able to purchase a Rose in decorative planted pot, John Lewis vouchers and three worded helium balloons for her. Monica Gray was elected as our new President, we are looking forward to times ahead. June led us into a light-hearted discussion on declining High Streets and how the WI could play a part in helping with this issue. We completed the morning with Bucks Fizz and nibbles. At our next month’s meeting we welcome Mark Davis to speak about “ Grasse - The centre of the perfume industry “ WIAM meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Market Hill Rooms. With a cast of over 100 pupils and many more involved behind the scenes the whole school is alive with excitement and anticipation. Performances are 27th and 28th June 7pm and 29th June, 2pm. Tickets are priced at £5.50 and £3.50. Box office 01763 246350.

In May we held our Annual Meeting. We have had a variety of speakers and have been on several outings, the latest to the Newmarket Stud where we saw a 9 day old foal. We have many groups within the Institute, The Book Club, Lunch Club, Walking Group, Craft Group and even a newly formed Ukulele one. The committee was re-elected with two new members, as long standing member Chris Pratt had decided to stand down. Helen Barrett was again elected President and we finished the meeting with a Cake and Preserves stall and a bring and buy, in aid of the Herts and Essex Air Ambulance. The next meeting is on the 13th June at 1.45 in the Heritage Hall when Paula Dolan will talk on Mishaps Abroad. If you would like to know more about our Institute please contact our President Helen Barrett on 01763 849122.

Wonderful websites that work

Websites are really important these days – no self-respecting company should be without one. But before you rush out, chequebook in hand to commission something fantastic, consider for a moment what your site needs to do. Who’s it for? Your site must be focussed towards one particular group of customers – if your business serves more than one market, julian berry you may want to consider multiple websites. What should it say? Most people will visit your site to solve a problem, or answer a question – do you know which problems and which questions? Obviously your site needs to be well written so that visitors get what they went there to find – and get it quickly! Also it should be written from your customers’ perspective, not yours. Don’t start sentences with ‘We will deliver...’, instead, think of the benefits your customers get working with you and start your sentences with ‘You will receive...’ And for every page, ask what is the one thought you want your visitors to take away. But all this matters little if your website can’t be found – so your site must be search engine-friendly too. Luckily, Google recognises that customers like well written, well-targeted popular sites and prioritises them accordingly, so put most of your effort into that. Links back to your site from social media platforms will also boost your rankings, as will the inclusion of video (don’t forget that Google owns YouTube), although the video needs to be as targeted and focussed as your words and contain really useful content to keep visitors coming back for more. To make sure your efforts aren’t wasted, all your online marketing must be integrated together to make sure it delivers the right message to the right audience at the right time. Just like it says in your overall marketing plan – you do have one of those, don’t you?

royston cave dvd

A new DVD has been produced on Royston Cave which presents a number of theories on the origins and use of the Cave. A launch evening held last month saw the town mayor and a number of councillors attending, along with members of the public and the History Society. Sylvia Beamon and Peter Houldcroft, both well known ‘Cave authors’ were there to answer questions about their theories on the origins and use of the Cave and Tobit Curteis, the Cave conservator was on hand to explain the conservation programme. Richard Whitmore, former BBC newscaster, who did the voice over for the DVD also spoke about his involvement in local history projects in Hertfordshire. All in all around a hundred people attended. The showing of the new cave DVD was very well received. The DVD is on sale at the Museum and via Amazon. Simply seach online for Royston Cave DVD.

The Cave is open from Easter to September every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday from 2.30 to 5.00 (last entry 4.30). In August only we open on Wednesdays with the same times. If anyone is interested in helping to keep the Cave open to the public please contact the Cave Manager via the Town Hall or via the website www.roystoncave.co.uk

book week

Studlands Rise School Book Week got off to a great start with a visit from Paul Geraghty. Paul is an author and illustrator of children’s picture books and novels, including Slobcat, Solo, The Hunter, The Hoppameleon, Monty’s Journey and Look out, Patrick! Paul worked with groups of children, sharing his books and showing how he illustrates them. He presented the school with the drawings that he produced during the day. Paul performed the official opening of our wonderful new library. The children are very excited by the bright new area and it is being put to very good use by all the children. Parents were invited to a sale of Paul’s books at the end of the day where he signed copies of purchased books. Headteacher Jan Cooper said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed working with Paul and learned a great deal from him. They had great fun and later enjoyed the writing and illustrating experience for themselves.”

“Join the World” Day

Children from Tannery Drift School travelled the world on a day dedicated to fun ways of learning about their link schools in countries as diverse as Spain and Ethiopia. The links with Ciudad de Roma School in Madrid and Selam Elementary School in the Gondar region of Ethiopia were established during the Olympic Games of 2012. Each class circulated around different rooms to engage in activities that gave a taster of the cuisine, art, culture, dance and lifestyle of these countries. Children viewed art works by Miro and attempted their own copies. A Spanish menu was on the table at lunch time as well as groups sampling the national Ethiopian dish of Injera and Mesir Wat, a spicy vegetarian dish eaten with hands from a large pancake style base.

Icknield Walk spend the day the Celtic Way

Our year 3 children went on a day trip to Celtic Harmony. This is a camp in the woods near Hertford in a Celtic style village, with round houses and camp fires. The children left school dressed as Celts wearing shawls pinned with Celtic style brooches. They learned to shoot a bow and arrow, they had their faces painted with Celtic symbols, gathered herbs and watched food cooking on an open fire. This trip has been an inspirational and exciting start to their topic about ancient Britain and has resulted in some fantastic Celtic Diary writing; the children pretended to be a Celt and have written diary entries to describe their day. For example, Jocelyn Hails wrote; “Sunshine and the tweeting of the birds woke me up, I went outside to ask my father what to do today. He set me to work weaving. I started to weave, it was such hard work using such a heavy loom. After that I had to polish the weapons, I was just finishing when my father shouted to tell me to fetch flowers for medicines from the woods. Eventually it was dinner time, this is our only meal of the day. We eat meat and herbs and then head off to our round house for bed”. Another child wrote about the Roman invasion; “It was lunch time, I was in the forest hunting, then I saw the eagle of the Romans, could they be attacking. I told the party I was with and we blew the Carnyx (our horn). It was a mistake, the Romans heard and marched towards us. We ran to the village but the soldiers were there already. They have taken us prisoners and treat us like slaves”. A day trip is a fantastic way to enhance the children’s learning and has a great impact on the standard of work the children produce.

NATIONAL THEATRE CONNECTIONS This year Meridian Performing Arts Department took part in the National Theatre Connections project for the first time. We performed a new play written for the project called ‘What Are They Like?’ by Lucinda Emily Bass, Chris Chapman, Dan Gee, Coxon. 12 students Barnaby Jordan, Callum Goodallfrom Years 10-13 took Makowski, Colette Mitchell, Danny Mynott, Zoe Reader, Edd Robinson, Ellie Sangan, on performance and Oli Smith and Mel Turner technical roles and have been rehearsing for the project since December. After 3 successful performances at Meridian in March, we were given the opportunity to perform in a Connections Festival at The Royal and Derngate Theatre in Northampton recently. It was a fantastic opportunity to perform in a professional venue and meet members of other companies similar to ours. We participated in the festival over two days, where we were able to take part in a clowning workshop, help create art work based on our performance and watch two other plays at the theatre. “The festival was great fun. The cast’s hard work paid off, resulting in a mature and confident performance. Well done to all involved”, said Cathy Harrison, Performing Arts Department.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is

misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn

up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV ÀQGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just

the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

bugs and beasties

HOMES & GARDENS

by Pippa Greenwood

Bugs and beasties are really thriving in this warmer weather, so just how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year?

Aphids

Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and can transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed incredibly rapidly, so regular control is necessary. • Check plants regularly and either spray with a suitable insecticide or a soap or plant oil based insecticide • Use biological controls – they’re totally safe for all other creatures and of course leave no residues • Use a strong jet of water to blast the aphids off plants, but do a thorough job or else they will soon be back up and causing damage

Caterpillars

Caterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through your plants and perhaps even into your vegetables. • Hand pick the pest where possible and either squash or place on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or very early in the morning. • Spray with a suitable contact insecticide or better still use the Nemasys Caterpillar biological control. • Some caterpillars, in particular the Tortrix Moth produce quantities of fine webbing which they use to bind leaves or other plant parts together to create particularly safe shelters for themselves. It’s hard for a pesticide to actually reach them so hand picking or squashing is often the best answer. • Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops such as calabrese, broccoli and other brassicas with Envirofleece or Enviromesh.

Woodlice

Woodlice often cause a lot of concern, however these little creatures are rarely responsible as they simply do not have

adequately strong mouthparts. They can cause damage to soft new growth or occasionally to softfleshed fruits such as strawberries but can’t tackle tougher plant growth. You may see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and presume that they have caused the initial damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures.

Earwigs

Earwigs can cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they nibble out large quantities of petal or occasionally leaf. Try trapping them using an inverted flowerpot on top of a bamboo cane. The bamboo cane and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can them simply be emptied out on a regular basis.

Mildew

Powdery mildew is also a problem at this time of year; it coats plant leaves, stems, buds and sometimes even petals with a white floury deposit. Sometimes the mildew can also prevent fruits from swelling normally, cause the leaves to become distorted and even fall early. Prompt action is essential and if you wish you can use a proprietary fungicide but check the label carefully for suitability. Keep the damage to a minimum in the first instance by ensuring that the plants are kept well watered. In addition try to ensure a good flow of air around the plants. A bit of careful pruning or weeding often helps too. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for Pippa’s free newsletter packed full of gardening hints, happenings, advice and offers and you will also receive a free ebook on organic gardening.

Roysia Women’s Club

Due to the bank holidays in May we only had two meetings. On the first one we enjoyed a day trip to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, the birth place of Sir Winston Churchill and now a World Heritage Site. Though the weather was variable we had a great day out looking round the house and extensive estate. On the second meeting of the month we had a talk by Rodney Tibbs on the Cambridge College Gardens. He brought along many slides to show the variety and beauty of these gardens. In June we will be having talks on the ‘Mad Hatter’ by Philip Wright, ‘Kitchenalia’ by Keith Goodwin and ‘Beekeeping and the Gardener’ by Stephen Poyser. New members are always welcome. Why not come along to one of our meetings held in the Town Hall on Monday evenings starting at 8pm. Speaker meetings end at 10pm and Social Evenings end at 9.30pm. For further details please contact: Wendy Pearce on 01763-231381 or Mavis Ingle on 01763-222524 or email: roysia10@yahoo.co.uk.
