After our shocking faux pas last issue (blue skies and blossom on our April front cover, as snow and Arctic temperatures closed in!), I hope that the finer weather and temperatures are here at last! Our pages are full of events in our local villages and town: in May alone we have Meldreth village and Melbourn Primary School’s Spring Fayres, the Royston May Fayre and the Beer Festival and the Guilden Garden Market. Ashwell plays host to its ever popular music festival now in its 60th year. Expect two weeks filled with top-class musicians, including classical guitarist Lily Afshar, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra and former Ashwell resident and renowned jazz pianist, James Pearson. Outdoor event Ashwell at Home is a chance to see the village behind the scenes. This year, Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth host their inaugral “at home”. The ambitious programme features a pop-up blue plaque walk, a dry pub crawl, touring the long-gone 15 hostelries and a cycle ride through the tracks to Wimpole Hall. THE 60TH ASHWELL MUSIC FESTIVAL

This year the people of Ashwell have Sixty Years of the something to celebrate – the 60th Anniversary Ashwell Music Festival of their well-loved Music Festival. 1953 – 2013 It is extraordinary that a small village in rural Hertfordshire has continued and extended this tradition for over six decades - the result of the dedication and enthusiasm of this vibrant community. Over the years Ashwellians have maintained their passion for locally available high-calibre music and their desire to share it Saturday 11th to Sunday 26th May 2013 with others. Past years have seen up to 1200 people attending. This year, we have more events planned and hope to attract around 2000 people, either to our concerts or to our ‘Made in Ashwell, art exhibiton. The Ashwell Music Festival was started in 1953 by Canon Jack INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED Catterick. Choristers and choral JAZZ PIANIST AND FORMER scholars gathered at the summer event ASHWELL RESIDENT, to sing choral music. Participants came JAMES PEARSON from cathedrals and choir schools throughout the country – Cambridge, Oxford, Worcester, Peterborough, Guildford, Southwell, Lichfield and many more. Since that time, the Festival has grown from the original concept of a summer school for young people to include many artistes who come to Ashwell as musical directors, conductors, composers and performers. Many have national and, indeed, international reputations. Jazz, swing, brass band music, rock and folk music have all been performed during the past 60 years. The original objective has never been forgotten and music from young people is always included. Every year Ashwell Primary School team up with the music department of local Knights Templar School and St Mary’s Junior Church Choir to perform a concert of exceptional quality and variety. ASHWELL AT HOME 2013

This year, Ashwell at Home will be raising money for the village museum, church and school. To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of this popular village event, there will be even more to see and do with entertainment for all the family. And, if you arrive promptly, you will be able to see the unveiling of the new village sign at 12noon. VIEW OVER ASHWELL FROM In addition to 15 open gardens including THE CHURCH TOWER a medieval farmhouse enclosed by a moat, you can visit the village lock-up (no longer in use!) and Ashwell cottage garden is hosting an archaeological dig. There will be a wide selection of displays including a Palestinian costume exhibition, harp demonstration, two model railways, old concertinas and accordions and much more. There will be Morris dancing, vintage cycle tour, Well Dressing (an ancient custom of thanksgiving for the purity of water during the Black Death), Mummers play, cricket match and Henry Harris’s funfair. And everywhere you will find “Ashwell Alive” plaques telling the history of many of the houses. New for this year are a music trail with short garden concerts performed by local musicians throughout the afternoon and guided walking tours that invite you to explore the historic heart of Ashwell and a wildlife tour through local countryside. There is also a ‘Made in Ashwell’ craft display and market. You can visit Ashwell Museum, the village school and even climb St. Mary’s Church tower for spectacular views over the village and way beyond (admission to the tower £3.00). Homemade lunches and teas will be readily available. Entry £6 per person. Children under 14 free. Free parking.

Help for people who are interested in setting up their own local care or support service in Hertfordshire Support Service Advice Fair

The Hertfordshire Micro Market Project is run by a social enterprise called Community Catalysts in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council. It is running until August 2013 to increase choices for people who may need some extra support because they are older, or because they have a learning and/or physical disability, 12th June 2013 or mental health need. It does this by supporting local people all over Hertfordshire to set up and run their own local and very small care and support service. These services are run with less than 5 staff or volunteers and they are completely independent. We call the people who set up these very small services micro providers. The services set up by micro providers can be very wide ranging and may include providing people with care or other support in their own homes or in the community, supporting people to take part in leisure and/or vocational activities, and supporting people to increase their independence and develop new skills and confidence Setting up one of these services offers potential new employment opportunities and can be a very rewarding way to make a living by making a real difference to people’s lives. If this is something that you might be interested in doing, you will be interested to know that an Advice Fair is being held in Stevenage for micro providers during the morning of 12th June 2013. This event will bring together in one place a very wide range of organisations and people who can give you advice on different aspects of setting up and running your own micro care or support service.

THE BRITISH RED CROSS IN HERTFORDSHIRE

The British Red Cross is well-known for its work bringing aid and relief to the scenes of disasters and conflicts around the world. Less well-known is the range of community services provided by Red Cross volunteers across the UK. Led by trained volunteers, the charity works to help people prepare for and deal with crisis every day here in Hertfordshire. Some of the local services include: Health and social care Red Cross volunteers are on hand to provide short-term care in the home for adults who need help or reassurance to get back to their normal routine after a hospital stay, or after disruption due to crises such as illness, bereavement, or breakdown. Volunteers are trained to help with a wide range of needs, including transport to and from medical appointments, prescription collection, help with shopping, meal preparation or light housework, visits to family and friends and assistance with keeping up hobbies or social activities, or even finding new ones. This service gets people back on their feet, and can even help them avoid being readmitted to hospital. The Red Cross also runs a medical equipment loan service, which hires out wheelchairs and offers short-term loans of equipment like backrests, bath seats, walking sticks and frames, commodes, bedpans and urinals. Emergency response Red Cross emergency response teams can be called out any time of the day or night to the scene of a fire, or another crisis such as an evacuation, industrial accident or flood. They offer comfort and practical help to the victims of the incident, often with the help of a Fire and Emergency Support Service (FESS) vehicle, which is equipped with a shower, spare clothes, blankets, hygiene packs, food and drink, first aid kits and other emergency supplies. ROYSTON ROCKETS BMX TRACK

The Royston Rockets BMX club track at Burns Road is undergoing a £100,000 transformation to develop the existing facilities into an ‘outstanding’ regional race track. The project has been funded with the help of a grant from The National Lottery and from North Herts District Council’s (NHDC) Section 106 fund. Section 106 CLLR KNIGHTON AT THE LAUNCH EVENT WITH ROYSTON ROCKET’S money is received from developers CLUB CHAIRMAN PHIL TOWNSEND AND of larger sites to offset the impact of SECRETARY MAUREEN TOWNSEND new building work in the local area. The Royston Rockets added money from their own funds. The track will be realigned and rebuilt to bring it up to date with the latest standards. When completed, the track will be the Hertfordshire’s only regional-level BMX race track. New jumps will be installed and a new surface laid. The venue will also be updated to offer new and modern training facilities. Cllr Ian Knighton from NHDC said: “The work on the track will benefit many younger people from Royston as well as the 80 plus BMX Club members. This will be an outstanding sports facility that will really put Royston on the sporting map and we hope that users will continue to enjoy it for many years to come.”

Our Summer Programme launched with three speaker meetings during April. The first talk, given by Louise Reed, was about ‘Fanny Kemble’ who became a notable British actress during the early to mid 19th century. She lived and toured America, became a prolific writer especially against the slave trade, before eventually returning to London where she died in 1893. Maggie Radcliffe made a return visit to the club to take us back to ‘The 60s’ remembering the fashions, music and famous events of that decade. Sybil Hammond spoke about ‘Chinese Painting’. She is a teacher at Capel Manor College in Middlesex and demonstrated some of the techniques used in this captivating style of painting. During May we will be taking a day trip to Blenheim Palace, the birth place of Sir Winston Churchill and a World Heritage Site; and we are having a talk by Rodney Tibbs about the Cambridge College Gardens. We were thinking of Spring although the weather did not reflect the same when we asked Ione Woodger-Smith to our April meeting. Ione came from Crazy Daisy in Buntingford to demonstrate how to put together arrangements with fresh flowers in wet oasis. She made it look so easy which of course it is not and takes lots of practice to get a professional result. Two people were lucky enough to win her arrangements in our raffle. The month of May brings us on to our A.G.M. when we welcome an advisor to our group to share her thought’s with us, also we will be supplying Nibbles and Bucks Fizz on this occasion. Denise Graham, our current president, will be standing down at this meeting. We thank Denise for the tireless hours she has given to her roll, and we wish her well with her other work commitments. We had a most enjoyable afternoon in April when Michael Dix, a magician entertained us with stories about other magicians and performed tricks.He told us about Houdini, and Chung Ling Soo, who wasn’t from China at all but a not very nice person called Arthur Robinson. He played at the Wood Green Empire using volunteers to shoot at him, but one night the trick went wrong and he ended up dead. It was thought to be murder He spoke about the Magic Circle who have a Museum and Theatre behind Euston Station. He asked one of the members to help with a trick and was a bit worried when he found out she was the Treasurer, but luckily he didn’t make her disappear, so his cheque was safe. This coming Tuesday some of our members will be attending The Spring Council meeting at Alban Arena, St. Albans where Michael Portillo is the guest speaker.We also have an outing arranged to visit the Newmarket Stud in May. At our April meeting we welcomed Barry Kaufmann-Wright, who spoke about his role as a Police Wildlife Officer. He showed slides of a variety of wildlife, explaining the dangers faced by them from unscrupulous traders and smugglers. It was interesting to learn of the successful arrests and prosecutions made as a result of his efforts – an informative and enjoyable evening. Later in the month nine of our members attended a Regional Conference in Cambridge. Our next meeting on 3 May will be a ‘members evening’, when we discuss Mandates for the National Townswomen’s Conference being held in June in Harrogate, followed by informal entertainment. On Saturday 18th May, Bassingbourn cum Kneesworth will be opening up their villages to visitors as they play host to the inaugural BBCK at home. Temporary blue plaques will appear alongside a full programme of activities including a scarecrow and photo trail, a bike ride running from Bassingbourn cum Kneesworth to Wimpole Hall, a range of walking opportunities for those keen to explore the dozens of ancient footpaths which criss-cross the fields between the villages, a classic car parade and historical lectures on a range of subjects with a particular focus on the early industrial revolution and its impacts on the combined villages. Highlights include: IRISH roots The strong link with Irish migration established in Bassingbourn during the coprolite boom in the nineteenth Century will be celebrated and remembered with a lecture given by leading regional expert Bernard O Connor, and a series of open mike events during the day featuring young and not so young folk artists. Some of the Old pubs where the Irish workers were reported to have ‘slept on floors’ having spent their earnings keeping warm with local spirits and beers will be given new signature sign posts for the day. SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND

Somewhere in England: Portraits of the Americans in Britain 1942 to 1945 is part of a year-long commemoration of the American forces arriving at RAF Duxford during the Second World War. These striking images have been selected from the Roger Freeman collection of over 15,000 images of the Eighth and Ninth Air Forces in Great Britain during the Second World War, which has recently been acquired by IWM. Some of the images featured in the exhibition have not been seen since the Second World War. Roger Freeman (1928-2005) was the son of an Essex farmer who lived close to Boxted airfield. Roger reminisced, “as an aeroplane-mad youth, I was soon to relish the American presence in the East Anglian sky…they were to leave a considerable impression on those who knew them, which did not fade easily when they departed.” His teenage enthusiasm developed into a life-long interest and he published many highly-respected books on the subject. The images show the range and diversity of the roles undertaken by the men of the United States Army Air Forces and the women of the Women’s Army Corps and the Red Cross – it wasn’t just pilots and ground crew that kept the aircraft flying. The photographs also capture rare off-duty moments and show how the American airmen became part of the community in which they were based. IWM Duxford, Until 31st December 2013

MELBOURN FETE AND MUSIC ON THE MOOR 2013

Melbourn Village Fete takes place on Saturday 29th June from1pm to late. The aim of the Melbourn Fete & Music on the Moor is to bring the village together, to have fun, socialise and raise money for local groups. Each year the committee organises the day so that local clubs, societies and charities can set-up stalls and provide entertainment to help with their fundraising. All proceeds are put back into the community. Over the last few years we have donated almost £10,000 to local groups. The Music, Food and Entertainments are booked so we’re ready to go and looking forward to a successful sunny day. PALAZZO RECIPE OF THE MONTH: SPAGHETTI LIMONE DI FORMAGGIO Summer is here... Finally! Here is a nice light and fresh pasta dish to enjoy on the patio with a glass of refreshing Pinot Grigio. Ingredients • • • • • • •

1 lemon zested and juiced Half a cup of Mascarpone Pinch of salt and pepper Pinch fresh grated nutmeg 200g of spaghetti 100g fresh spinach Handful chopped toasted Hazelnuts

Serves 2

Method 1 Whisk together the lemon zest and juice with the Mascarpone, nutmeg then season 2 Meanwhile cook the pasta in salted water as per the packet instructions. 3 Drain the pasta off and return to the heat. Now add the Mascarpone mixture and spinach. 4 Once the spinach has wilted add a splash of boiling water. 5 Finish by tossing in the hazelnuts to the pasta and reduce until you have the sauce to your desire. 6 Serve with a fresh green salad and of course a glass of cold Pinot.

Manchego is from La Mancha region of Spain, made from the milk of sheep from the manchega breed. This semi cured cheese has a creamy yet nutty texture, and can be enjoyed on a traditional cheeseboard, or drizzle with honey or a sweet chilli sauce for a tapas style supper. For a traditional Moorish dish, stuff aubergines with lamb and Moorish spices and top with Manchego cheese: Simply drizzle halved aubergines with olive oil and bake for 30mins. Meanwhile, fry up a mix of onion, garlic and pepper with a mix of Moorish spices such as cumin seeds, cinnamon, grated nutmeg, paprika and crushed dried chillies. Add minced lamb and once browned, stir in half a tin of chopped tomatoes. Scoop the soft aubergine flesh from the baked shells and add this to the lamb mix, before stuffing the aubergine skins with the lamb and spice mix. Top with the manchego cheese. Bake together in a hot oven for 10mins until the cheese is bubbling and golden.

WALKING FOR HEALTH AT WANDLEBURY

Come and join the friendly team of volunteers at Wandlebury Country Park, on the Gog Magog Hills - just 15mins drive from Royston - for weekly Healthy Walks. Everyone is welcome on Thursday mornings. An extended walk sets off from the Stable Rooms or Tadlow Granary at 10am, with a shorter walk leaving at 10.30am, then both groups return for tea, coffee and refreshments together at 11am. As Wandlebury’s regular walkers will testify, walking is a safe way to a healthier lifestyle and the opportunity to enjoy the company of fellow walkers is the other important ingredient. New walkers are always welcome - and the walks are organised so that everyone can walk at their own pace. Like many women, Jane found labour an exhausting, painful experience when her first child Ruby was born in 2008. NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK AT MERIDIAN

National Science and Engineering Week is an annual celebration of the contributions made to our society by the fields of Science and Engineering. In its sixth year of celebrations at Meridian, the school dedicates a week to raising the profile of Science in the school. The week started with an assembly where David Paterson, Head of Science, spoke about the importance of Innovation and Discovery in our society. He contrasted the massive investment of time, energy and money in the CERN Large Hadron Collider, which recently discovered the Higgs Boson, with Solar Demi, an innovator in the Phillipines who developed cheap sun-tubes for people’s homes, made of little more than old plastic bottles. Throughout all year groups, students took part in the London Science Museum’s Spaghetti Challenge. We gratefully acknowledge the support from Royston Tesco, who supplied the spaghetti, marshmallows and chocolate eggs. Students had 15 minutes to construct a tower from nothing more than 6 marshmallows and a handful of spaghetti, which would hold a creme egg aloft for 30 seconds. Many ingenious designs were constructed, with a number of spectacular failures once the egg was placed on! The winning design was from a Year 11 group, who managed to hold the egg 29cm above the desk for the required time. Lunchtimes saw many students taking part in practical and demonstration activities. The effects of liquid nitrogen were demonstrated, which at -196°C freezes objects very quickly! Demonstrations included shattering daffodils with the gentlest tap, and turning blutac into a nail, knocking it into a block of wood with a hammer. The other extreme of temperature was also demonstrated, producing molten iron with the thermite reaction, demonstrating the combustability of ethanol, and with the help of Vicki Rae, a student teacher in the school, how to make a jelly baby scream (potassium chlorate and lots of heat!).

PARENT EVENTS AT ICKNIELD WALK

We work hard to involve parents in their children’s learning. One way we do this is to invite our parents into school to share in a learning afternoon. This happens at the end of a topic when the children share some of the work they have been doing. Recently the year 4 children invited their parents to a Victorian afternoon. The children sang and played Victorian music, then they talked about famous Victorians such as Florence nightingale. Next the children did some role play to show us what life would have been like in a Victorian classroom. This was all followed by a cup of tea and a slice of homemade Victoria sponge cake. The year 2 parents came for an afternoon of castle life. This took place in the school hall. There were herbs on the floor (to give an authentic smell to our castle), shields on the walls and the windows became stained glass. The children sold homemade orange pomanders and put on a demonstration of medieval dancing and jousting. The year 3 children came to school dressed as pirates and spent the day searching for treasure, eating pirate biscuits and drinking pirate ‘grog’. In the afternoon the year 3 children’s parents were entertained by the children singing sea shanties, acting out life on board a ship, including scrubbing the decks and climbing the rigging. After each afternoon presentation by the children in each year group, the parents were then invited into the classrooms to look at their child’s topic work. It is this process of explaining their work to their parent or carer that helps the children to re-visit their learning; making their learning more effective and of course it also gives the children an opportunity to share their work and feel proud of their achievements!

Now I don’t know much about fashion, but I can recognise a good business lesson when I see it. Unlike many fashion houses, Prada remains independent and prosperous. Richard lives in Melbourn with his family where he runs his garden design and build company, Garden Design Solutions. May is the month of blue and purple flowers. Last month yellow and white were the dominant colours with daffodils, forsythia and trees in blossom. This month in gardens across our region Syringas (Lilacs) are beginning to come into flower. They are no nonsense shrubs that grow in well drained, fertile, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun and offer great spring fragrance. Syringa vulgaris â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Charles Jolyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is a good specimen, but my favourite is Syringa microphylla â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Superbaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Little Leaf Lilacâ&#x20AC;? which has fragrant, rosy pink flowers and is smaller in habit and well suited to the smaller garden setting. Despite beautiful flowers and fragrance, if you believe in folklore bringing branches of Lilac into the house is considered bad luck. Wisteria is the king of climbers and will be bursting into flower later this month. Its pea-like, racemes of fragrant flowers are a glorious thing. I recommend Wisteria floridunda â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Macrobotrysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for a blue to violet display, in well drained, fertile soil, on a sunny wall. Bluebells are the star performers of this month. A carpet of Hyacinthoides non-scripta (English Bluebell) growing wild provides a beautiful scene to enjoy in our deciduous woodlands. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great excuse to get out into the countryside and into native woodlands to experience these wonderful wild flowers. I recommend a trip to Hayley Wood near Little Gransden on the B1046.

However much effort you make with your garden, you can be sure that there will still be a few things that look awful. You may have made (or hope to make) beautiful borders, sensational shrubbery and lots more besides, but how do you cope with those things you just cannot seem to hide? A washing line may be essential but rarely adds to the appeal of the garden. If yours consists of two large poles with a line in between, try growing a pretty climber up the poles. If you use a self-clinging plant such as variegated ivy it won’t need any additional support. Alternatively make a chicken wire, trellis ‘box’ or frame around the posts and then allow the climber to scramble up, using plant ties if necessary. Summer flowering clematis or sweet pea will look great too. If you do use a more vigorous climber then be prepared to do some intermittent pruning. Decrepit sheds or moth-eaten garages can be a real eyesore. Sometimes a thorough scrub of the walls will do the trick, or why not make a feature out of the shed or garage and re-paint it. Consider erecting a trellis on one or more of the vertical surfaces and grow a selection of favourite climbers up it to make an even more attractive feature. If the garden can be a little gloomy then it helps if you paint any surfaces such as garage or shed walls with a paler colour. If your heating is fuelled by gas from an unattractive and enormous cylinder or oil from a large green tank, you will know that they have to be sited in an accessible position. You can use hazel wattle hurdles to hide them which are perfect as they also match with the adjacent boundary fence. Try using standard fence panels in the same way and again planting them with climbers or scramblers will help. Whatever you do, make sure that you check on it from time to time and remove excessive climber growth so that the tank remains accessible.

Is it the neighbouring garden that harbours the eye sore which makes you want to retreat back into your house? Something nasty next door is of course even harder to conceal but why not

add a layer of trellis to the top of your existing fence and then use climbers once it is in position. Hold the trellis in position using batons of wood attached to the existing fence posts or special post-joining metal sleeves that you can buy from your fencing supplier or garden centre. Trellis is available in a range of shapes and need not be straight edged so you can create a range of different looks to suit your gardening style. Another option is to erect a pergola or arch to obscure or break up an unsightly view or the eyesore in the neighbour’s garden and adding plants will help to add a bit more height and soften the outline. If you combine some of your favourite flowering climbers with some evergreen planting too, you should even achieve good effects during the seasons when the leaves have fallen from many plants.
