Lawrences opened their delightful Grade II listed premises at 16 Kneesworth Street, Royston in April 2014 having personally refurbished the building. Paul Lawrence and James Lawrence Dodds (father and son) are partners within this small practice which seeks to provide a wide range of property related services. Paul Dodds has been a fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors for nearly Paul Lawrence & 35 years and, as a consequence of his love of James lawrence building construction, has been a Chartered dodds Builder for nearly 20 years. Paul has worked in the Public Sector as a building Surveyor in an Architects Department, Private Practice and in Commerce running a large construction company undertaking residential and various commercial projects including offices and supermarkets. More recently, he has operated his own development and building companies completing numerous residential projects. James has a degree in property and surveying and intends to be a chartered surveyor. Although young, James has been assisting in inspecting properties and tracking over building sites since his early years. Lawrences offer a wide range of services including estate agency, lettings and management, surveys and valuations of all property types, and architectural work for planning and building regulation submissions. Paul states, “At Lawrences we do not wish to constantly re-assure the public how good we are. We prefer to get on with our work in an efficient and professional manner and let our clients draw their own conclusions”

Author of The Crimson Rooms and Season of Light will be American Invasion 1944 - 1945! speaking at 398th bombardment group and 55th fighter group

OUT & ABOUT

Oversexed, overpaid, and over here, so the saying goes, but very many paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom from tyranny between 1943-1945 when the United States of America came to the United Kingdom. So it was in April 1944 the 398th Bombardment group (H) 8th Air Force 1st Air Division with four squadrons of the Flying Fortress B17 moved into the quiet and peaceful hamlet of Nuthampstead on land owned by Baron Dimsdale, which in late 1942 had been built into Station 131, an airfield 5 miles from Royston, 35 miles from London and 460 feet above sea level, the highest in East Anglia, the nearest to the capital and then, the most remote. Even Glen Miller and his band got lost returning to their HQ in Bedford following a concert at Station 131! Initially the Lockheed Lightnings of the 55th Fighter Group were first on the Base but by April 1944 to the end of the war in May 1945 the bomber group, the last to be stationed in England, were the sole occupants, flying in daylight over Germany and occupied Europe. The first 398th mission took place on May 6th 1944 and the last – its 195th – on April 25th 1945. Within that time 296 airmen lost their lives including their first Commanding Officer, Colonel Frank Hunter leading the Group in a raid on rail yards in Neuss, Germany, and 298 became prisoners of war. Seventy aircraft were lost in combat and a further 50 abandoned after forced landings. In October 1944 a B17 failed to gain height on take off and skimming the fields and hedgerows it flew straight into the mound (Motte) of the once Norman Castle, on the edge of the Churchyard of St. George of Anstey. It was the

mound which prevented the church from destruction. The Group’s last mission of the war and the very last of the 8th Air Force was to Pilson, in what was then Czechoslovakia. They lost two aircraft to (flak), anti aircraft fire, the last American bombers to be lost in WWII Since 1982 local people have welcomed veterans and their families back on bi-annual visits, and over the years have entertained them with nostalgic visits including Cambridge American Cemetery and light aircraft flights from the old air field. In recent years with the help of our UK friends of the 398th, funds have been raised to erect two memorials adjacent to the ‘The Woodman Inn’ in Nuthampstead to the 55th Fighter Group and he 398th Bombardment Group and a magnificent stained glass window in St. George Church, Anstey saved by a miracle in 1944. Currently a small Garden of Rememberance is being constructed to the rear of the Woodman Inn which will be open to view on Saturday 14th June following the rememberance service.

Saturday 14th June – 11am: Remembrance 398th Bombardment Group and 55th Fighter Group Veterans & Families, Woodman Inn, Nuthampstead. Sunday 15th June: Thanksgiving Service, St. George, Anstey in memory of those who flew from Nuthampstead Airfield in 1944-1945.

JUNE 2014

Keeping Royston residents in touch with their local council

Welcome to our new Councillors! We would like to welcome all our new Councillors and also to those who are returning to their old posts and who will all take up their posiı ons in Royston Town Hall on June 2nd at 7.15pm which will be the start of the new civic year. We look forward to working with you all as we begin a new period of exciı ng growth and new projects for the next 4 years. The name of the new Mayor was not known at the ı me of going to press but we will have an in-depth profile of him or her in the next issue.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL MAY FAYRE! Large crowds of local residents and visitors enjoyed another fantası c May Fayre on the May Day Bank Holiday Monday with fine weather helping this annual event to go really well. All the usual fun aı racı ons were in Priory Memorial Gardens together with the welcome return of the Bungee Trampoline aı er it was such a big success last year. The annual Dog Show was very popular with a great many fun category entries, and other aı racı ons like the Punch and Judy show, the Mix and Mingle Magician and the fair ground rides provided a lot for visitors to see and do. We also had some wonderful dance displays provided by our local dance groups, a Karate display and many local chariı es had stalls on the site. We are so pleased that many people told us how much they enjoyed the Fayre this year and our deepest thanks go to the May Fayre Commiı ee, Town Hall staff, Town Councillors and a small team of Community volunteers, who all worked so hard to make the 2014 May Fayre, the huge success it turned out to be.

Annual Town Meeı ng 2014

The Annual Town meeı ng took place on 13th March when a large group of residents packed the Town Hall to hear reports from their local Councillors at Town, District and County level, about their work over the past year. Those aı ending were also asked for their views on the proposal by Royston Town Council to purchase the Market Place, and an informaı on leaflet was handed out. Aı er some debate and discussion a subsequent show of hands showed an overwhelming majority in favour of this proposal with only two against. The Town Mayor, Cllr Robert Smith gave out grants to local groups and organisaı ons from his Community Trust Fund. He then presented Community Service Awards to: Chris Murphy, in recogniı on of his services in organising the Remembrance Sunday Parades and Remembrance Day ceremonies; Royston Town Band, in recogniı on of their work and dedicaı on in represenı ng Royston and in celebraı on of their 150th Anniversary; Graham Pfaff Royston Town Crier, in recogniı on of his enthusiasm and dedicaı on in represenı ng Royston since 2003; Royston Arts Fesı val commiı ee, in recogniı on of their work and dedicaı on in organising the successful annual Royston Arts Fesı val and Mrs Joan Germany, in recogniı on of her dedicaı on over 50 years to youth work within Royston and more recently leading Pastoral Care at Queens Road Methodist Church.

Another successful year of school visits by Royston Town Councillors! Royston Town Council’s important School engagement iniı aı ve which began 6 years ago, has notched up another successful round of visits to Royston schools this year. Town Councillors were joined by District and County Councillors when they met with school students across all age ranges to explain about their various roles in local government and also engage in spirited and valuable discussion about life in our town and the children’s views and comments on Royston. We were as always so pleased to hear that the majority of youngsters liked living here and also cared about their community in quite surprising ways. Various issues that are raised are always followed up wherever possible and we also work hard to encourage our young people to become good ciı zens of the future wherever they may be living at that ı me.

Royston Means Business is a small group of retailers who got together about two years ago to look at ways of reviving the High Street and bringing local events to the town. We have held three successful events so far; two Christmas Fairs and the Summer Rock event which was a huge success. The Christmas Fair included an Ice Rink which was incredibly popular with families, and the group are hoping to build on that this year with a bigger rink if financially possible. The Summer Rock event takes place again on Saturday 12th July with stalls along the High Street and Adhoc again plan to host local bands and a food fair. Would you like to become a part of the committee as we are currently looking for people to help with the workload? If so please contact Lisa Thompson on 07540 157200 or roystonmeansbusiness@gmail.com. Or would you prefer to become a sponsor of the event if so please contact Lisa for more information.

However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed-to be a participant in his own transcendence.

Sat 28th, 3.00pm Tarzan (PG)

A teenage boy raised by gorillas in Africa falls for a pretty conservationist following a chance meeting in the jungle, but finds their romance threatened by a menacing Silverback, and a scheming capitalist in search of a new energy source in this animated adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic tale

Sat 28th, 7.30pm Calvary (15)

CALVARY’s Father James (Brendan Gleeson) is a good priest who is faced with sinister and troubling circumstances brought about by a mysterious member of his parish. Although he continues to comfort his own fragile daughter (Kelly Reilly) and reach out to help members of his church with their various scurrilous moral - and often comic - problems, he feels sinister and troubling forces closing in, and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.

Three business-minded women and mums from Hertfordshire have teamed up to run their first craft fair and pop up tearoom in Royston Town Hall in June. Attracting over 20 artisans from Hertfordshire and the rest of the UK selling high quality, contemporary arts and crafts items, visitors with a sweet tooth will also be able to indulge in tea and handmade cakes. Plus it’s free to come in so what more can you ask for on a Sunday afternoon? The three mums involved are: Tracey Kifford, a former journalist who owns WowThankYou, a highly successful online craft business with over 1700 individual stores, all selling hand crafted, and contemporary products made in the UK. Jodie Khurody, a former visual merchandiser who owns Vintage Allsorts, a pop up tea room serving tea and homemade cakes on beautiful vintage china, all over Hertfordshire. Laura Whitford, a former marketing executive and owner of Kozmic Dreams, a Royston-based business designing and selling unique hand crafted, animal themed products. The women knew that their businesses would work perfectly together, so have decided to run the event in the hope that it will be the first of many in Hertfordshire. Please contact Laura Whitford for more details at laura@ wowthankyou.co.uk or on 07956 465358.

The free event will be held in Royston Town Hall on Sunday 22nd June, between 11am-4pm.

Glazed Chicken Kebabs with Sweet Serves 4

Ready in 25mins

These quick chicken kebabs with a tangy chilli glaze are perfect for a mid-week supper. Sweet potatoes cook just as quickly as ordinary potatoes, just make sure they are cut into even-sized chunks and take care not to overcook them.

Ingredients:

• 450g chicken breast

fillets, cut into cubes • 2 small red onions, peeled and cut into thin wedges • 2 tsp sunflower oil • 1 kg sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks • 25g butter • 2 tbsp crème fraiche • 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce • 1 tbsp runny honey • 2 tsp red wine vinegar • 1 tbsp fresh chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Thread the chicken cubes and onion wedges onto four wooden skewers. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and brush all over with sunflower oil. Cook under a medium preheated grill for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is just cooked through. Meanwhile, boil the sweet potatoes in a large pan of lightly salted boiling water for 10-15 minutes, or until tender. Drain well, then mash with the butter and crème fraiche until smooth. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place the chilli sauce, honey and vinegar in a small pan and simmer for 1-2 minutes until syrupy. Brush half the glaze all over the chicken kebabs and grill for a further 1-2 minutes. Serve the kebabs on the sweet potato mash with the rest of the hot glaze drizzled over. Garnish with fresh chopped coriander. For an extra fiery flavour add some finely chopped fresh red chilli pepper to the glaze.

The royston foodbank

The Foodbank opened its doors a little over a month ago, and things are beginning to move forward. A spokesman for the Foodbank said “We set the project up to help people in Royston and the surrounding villages within a 7 mile radius of the town. Up to now our focus has been the collection of food and we have been visiting churches and community groups to get the message out. We now have a permanent collection point in Tescos, which means that people can drop off food as soon as they buy it, vand Tescos will top up any donations by 30% of their value. Now, with food coming in, our focus has shifted to making sure that anyone in a crisis situation is aware of how to get our help.” The Foodbank operate a voucher system, so people need to contact an approved agency to be referred. To that end the team are focussing on potential agencies and are beginning to advertise to let people know where they can go to get vouchers. Agencies registered at this time include The Citizens Advice Bureau, Local Children’s Centres, North Herts Homes and Aldwyck Housing Association, Job Centre plus, Homestart, Spectrum and Community Psychiatric Health. Some of the local churches have signed up, and discussions are in progress with Schools and GP surgeries. If anyone is hungry and trying to avoid getting further into debt they can contact a relevant agency to be referred. (The website www.royston.foodbank.org.uk will soon have a regularly updated list of agencies.) Any local groups or organisations helping people in a professional capacity can contact Royston Foodbank for more information on how to help. Royston Foodbank can be contacted by phone - 07541 808185 or email info@royston.foodbank.org.uk

BASSINGBOURN ‘BEASTLY’ MULTI-TERRAIN HALF MARATHON

Are you a keen runner? Looking for a new challenge? Well look no further than the Bassingbourn Multi-terrain Half Marathon, which will be held for the first time on Sunday 6th July. Whilst the race starts and finishes in Bassingbourn, it also takes in some villages that will be familiar to you including Litlington, Abington Piggots, Guilden Morden and Steeple Morden. This is a relatively flat course so personal bests are possible and the course is suitable for those new to the half marathon distance. Not only is this a new exciting event and the first of FIT4THECHALLENGE but it is also, MOST IMPORTANTLY, raising money for Brainstrust, a brain cancer charity. Closing date for entry is 27th June and all information you need is at www.fit4thechallenge.co.uk Not a runner, but like to get involved in community events? Well, we want to hear from you! For any event the success is dependant on volunteers. We need volunteers to be marshals on the day, both around the course and at the race headquarters - if you have access to a mobile phone, have your own transport and are over 18 then get in touch - Contact: info@fit4thechallenge. co.uk or call / text 07971507580.

Roysia women’s WI PM Club

We started our Summer programme on 12th May with a talk on the ‘Origin of English Sayings and Superstitions’ by Marion Langley. Marion gave a very amusing insight into how they have been passed down through families and generations by word of mouth. Many have gone unrecorded and greatly changed due to the different dialects throughout the British Isles. The following week Jason Middleton spoke about ‘The History of Pearls’. This was a fascinating account of how they grow in oysters, are harvested by the pearl fishermen and cleaned and prepared ready for creating beautiful jewellery. Throughout June we have a Mystery Trip and three speaker meetings: “A Year in the Life of a Celebrity” by Eve Regelou; “After the Yarn” by the Spinning Lady, Celia Gwynn, and “Experiences of an Olympic Games Maker” by Keith Truman. New members are always welcome. Why not join one of our meetings held in the Town Hall 8pm, Monday evenings. For further details please contact Wendy Pearce 01763 231381 or Mavis Ingle 01763 222524 or email: roysia10@yahoo. co.uk.

Our may meeting was the annual one when we elect our committee and President for the year. It was our 90th and we had a Lunch at the Cambridge Motel. We now have 64 members. The Secretary gave her report in which she detailed our activities. We have had a variety of speakers, a legal talk on the Old Bailey, a talk on St. Paul’s Cathedral, music, humour and some advice on illegal drugs. Our thanks must go to Lorna Bennett for a varied programme. We have also had some fund raising events, A Garden Party at our President’s, a Strawberry Tea, a Mince Pie and a Hot Cross Bun morning. Our thanks to the Hostesses. On the Social side we joined a trip to Brighton organised by another Institute. We have had a trip to the Botanic Gardens and the theatre to see South Pacific. A few even braved the weather to visit the open Gardens at Alswick Hall. Next month we are booked to go to Bletchley Park. The next meeting is on 12th June, when Keith Baldwin will give a talk on “When Doctors and Policemen begin to look Young”. This is in The Heritage hall at 1.45pm.

Towns women’s guild

Townswomen’s May gathering was a “Members’ Meeting”, when the Committee stood down to entrust the evening to non-Committee members. Barbara Goddard assumed control and we were not disappointed. She had organised a very enjoyable evening of poems, ditties, and quizzes, each being individually presented and amusingly executed. As well as the customary raffle, there was an auction of donated items. Following a tea and biscuit break, mandates for discussion at the Townswomen’s Annual General Meeting in Cardiff at the end of June were discussed. Royston Townswomen’s Guild meets on the first Friday of each month in Royston Town Hall, Room 11, 7 to 9.30 pm. If you would like to know more, please contact Pauline Gates on 01763 221314. Visitors welcome.

The future of lighting is green!

Welcome to the town centre...

Durable, powerful and efficient like no other illuminant – LED light technology helps significantly reduce the electricity consumption and sustainably improve lighting quality. Furthermore, LEDs make an active contribution to environment protection. Due to their low energy requirement, they demonstrably reduce CO2 emissions and contain, in contrast to conventional energy saving lamps, no toxic mercury. Greenius Lighting is proud to be in the business of helping organisations save money by:

o Significantly reducing lighting energy costs o Reducing on-going maintenance costs associated with replacing light bulbs o Providing a quick return on investment: often within 1 year Greenius Lighting Ltd based in Royston is part of an international group of companies providing LED lighting across Europe. The company is owned by local businessman Neil Doughty who has been running successful international businesses for several years.

BUSINESS

Beating the Competition As the football World Cup heralds the start of a summer of sport, many athletes minds will be focussed on beating the competition. And the same should be true for business owners and managers. Copy the athletes The athletes will have chosen their sport, studied the rules and techniques with their coaches and then trained as hard as they can to execute those techniques to the best of their ability. And we should do the same with our businesses; we should study our marketplace and our customers, listen to the advice of those who have relevant experience and then deliver our product as perfectly as we can. But there’s more to it than that, isn’t there? What about your competitors, how do you beat them? Don’t get sidetracked I remember a swimmer being interviewed at the London Olympics saying that it didn’t matter that the incredible Michael Phelps was in the lane next to him. To worry about any other swimmer in the pool would

just distract him from swimming as fast as he could. The same is true for business – worrying about the competition can be an unnecessary distraction! Just do your research on them and if they have strengths, try to copy them and if they have weaknesses, try to exploit them. But what if your competitor is huge? Whether your competitor is a local sole trader, or a massive organisation like Domino’s, Wetherspoon’s or Tesco Express, the ways to deal with them are the same. Don’t panic and don’t get upset – stay focussed on your customers and give them something that they cannot get anywhere else. If you provide them with a product, a service or an experience that they can’t get elsewhere, then they’ll keep coming back. It doesn’t need to be much, but it must be valuable to your customer, because “Every little helps!”

REED FIRST SCHOOL CELEBRATE ITS CENTENARY!

On 28 June, Reed First School will be hosting a special garden party to mark its 100th birthday. This is to give people who have a past or present connection with the school or village the opportunity to come and celebrate with them from 12 noon until 4pm. Over the next few weeks, the children will be learning more about how the school has developed over time and helping to prepare for the party, which will include the opportunity to see photographs of the school over the last 100 years; maypole dancing and singing, as well as games for children and adults to enjoy and a raffle. Teas, coffees, squash and cakes will be offered for a donation but there will also be a barbecue and bar for those who want to pay for something more substantial. Reed School first opened its doors after the fields had been harvested and welcomed 37 pupils, aged up to 14, from the village and the surrounding area – many of them had previously had to walk across the fields to Barkway. There were originally two classrooms, divided by a partition, and these are still in use today as the school hall. The school currently has 48 children on roll and is still using the original admissions book, which has had 1,100 names added over the years. Mrs Jackie Harvey, Headteacher says; “It would be impossible to invite everybody individually without running the risk of causing offence by leaving someone out. Therefore, although some invitations will be sent out soon, I am relying on posters, group messages and word of mouth to let interested people know about it. I am keen to make the afternoon a celebration of Reed School with fun activities for all ages and maypole dancing and guided tours led by the children.” To ensure that the school caters adequately for everyone who comes, it is vital that staff have a clear idea of expected numbers. Everyone who has a past or present connection with the school or village is welcome to attend but please contact the school to let them know.

Please RSVP to the school by Saturday 14 June via telephone: 01763 848304, email: admin@reed.herts.sch.uk or by post: Reed First School, Jackson’s Lane, Reed, Royston SG8 8AB.

Friends of Reed Church - Jazz in the (School) Garden

Following on from Reed First School Centenary Celebrations, FoRC has been graciously offered the use of the school grounds and facilities for the now annual extravaganza normally known as “Jazz in the Garden”, from noon ‘til 4pm on 29th June. There will be music provided by The Savoy Jazz Band and a licensed bar, with wonderful food as usual at this much relished event . Tickets are priced at £15 for adults and £35 for a family, available from Di’ Bamford (01763 848481) and Liz’ Jakeman (01763 848398). Last year’s event was so popular that we were almost forced to turn people away at the gate, so get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Please remember that is a licensed charity event and those who arrive with their own alcoholic drink will be turned away.

Top tips and ideas to improve your garden!

Sunshine always brings us into the garden and makes us feel good. Here I will suggest ways to make improvements to your outdoor spaces to make them more enjoyable.

1. Barbeque Season With the good weather we love to enjoy eating and entertaining outside. Make sure that your patio area is large enough to incorporate the barbeque and the table and chairs for your friends. The classic mistake is to make the patio just a bit larger than the size of the table, but remember to allow enough space to push the chairs in and out. 2. Watering As the temperatures rise you will need to be watering the garden. Established planting can tolerate less water, but newly planted areas, hanging baskets, newly laid turf and vegetable plots will all need water. I like to water early in the morning or late afternoon when the temperature is dropping and there is less evaporation. The more high tech gardeners may consider timing devices that allow for automated watering. This is especially helpful if you are away on holiday. If you don’t already have a water butt, consider getting one!

Aquatic Landscapes Complete Design, Build and Maintenance Service All aspects of pond work undertaken. From new builds to complete overhaul of existing ponds. Water features, waterfalls, streams, koi ponds, natural ponds, ornamental and wildlife ponds. Also complete landscaping service including decking, paving, block paving and turfing.

3. Transparency Planting up the garden is not all about large shrubs and dense enclosure of space. I love to use flowers and grasses that offer transparency in the planting. Plants such as Verbena bonariensis, Miscanthus ‘Marlepartus’, Foeniculum vulgare ‘Giant Bronze’, Molinia caerulea ‘Transparent’ and Knautia macedonica give flower and foliage interest without the density of a shrub. Herbaceous perennials and grasses provide summer colour in the garden and always appear in my garden designs. 4. Vertical interest With so much building, our outdoor spaces seem to be getting smaller and smaller, so it is very important to consider how to get the best plant interest without losing useable space. I always look to include climbing plants in my garden designs because if well trained the growth is upward rather than outward. Always provide wire or trellis for your climbers to grow onto and keep tying in new growth with string. I have used Rosa ‘Madame Alfred

Carriere’ over my cottage door that looks (and smells) great at this time of year. 5. Filler planting The best planned planting schemes have periods when you are waiting for the next flowers to arrive. My top tip to extend the flowering period in the border is to have annuals growing in reserve in pots to fill the gaps and extend the flowering. I love to use Cosmos , nigella, Godetia ‘Grace Mixed’ and Ammi majus. There is always a vast choice at the garden centre, but why not buy a few packets of seed instead?! My children love to get involved and watch their plants grow! Go for it! Start with little changes, it can make all the difference to your enjoyment of the garden! Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is

misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn

up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV ÀQGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just

the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Plotting a Vegetable Garden Even the smallest garden can find space to grow vegetables. Start now and you can enjoy delicious home-grown salads all summer long. Producing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some supertasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time. And salad leaves grown in ornamental pots can be as decorative as they are nutritious. Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible. As salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune on compost. Ideally choose a good-quality multipurpose compost, but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growing-bag. I find the quality of the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but for the time you need it – and provided you keep it well-fertilised – it’ll be adequate. If you grow your own salad leaves you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo, either a gorgeous bright-green standard Lollo a burgundy-tinged Lollo Rosso or a mixture of both. Treat them as cut-and-come-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, then they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer. Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient, too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the

plant produce a root too. There are still plenty of tomato plants in the shops now, but hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. If you choose an outdoor variety it can be grown in a pot on its own, and if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container. If you’re after some fire in your cooking, a chilli pepper thrives in a pot in a warm and very sheltered spot as do sweet peppers. Fresh herbs can make a salad more interesting too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage, or even consider popping a few in with your main crops. Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun, so site your containers carefully. You want them to be easily accessible from the kitchen, but it’s more important to ensure they’re sheltered from the wind yet still get enough sun. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The garden containers will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the tastebuds.

Be house proud

As Spring turns to Summer, and you’ve spent time sprucing up the inside, don’t neglect the exterior of your house. Wash your windows, and if they have wooden frames, you may want to give them a fresh lick of paint. Wash window frames, soffits and fascia boards to remove any grime. Clear out dead leaves from the guttering and check that nothing is blocking the soakaways. Throw away any old children’s toys or clutter, and remove cobwebs. For the high-up jobs, local business Anglian High Access are expert in cleaning and clearing jobs, as well as taking on repair work for both commercial, residential and industrial.
