Autumn may well be here but there is no reason to stay indoors... the Royston area certainly knows how to host events! Expect to start the month with a whizz and a bang as Fireworks Nights take place in the area. Notably, Icknield Walk and Wimpole Hall host their events on Saturday 2nd November. The following weekend is Remembrance Day. The Royston Branch of the Royal British Legion host this excellent event, which is always well attended by townsfolk of all ages and a poignant reminder of all that those in the Services have done for us in the past and continue to do now. In-house, we are delighted to welcome Sharon Windebank to The Listing team. Sharon is well known in the town as she’s been a familiar face at Saffron Insurance on Kneesworth Street in Royston for the past 9 years. She joins Kate Berry, Cath Boughton and Lucy Boughton here in the office, and she’s already enjoying getting out and about and meeting so many businesses in the area! This is our 99th issue and we’re delighted to be still going strong and working with so many of you in our local community. If we can help your business, organisation, group, club or you, then please do get in touch. We’ll be delighted to hear from you.

ROYSTON AND DISTRICT MODEL RAILWAY CLUB EXHIBITION 2013 16th November

The club was established following the tremendous response given by the public to an exhibition organised by the Royston Community Association early in 1987 using the community rooms at the rear of Royston Town Hall. Since then an annual exhibition has been set in the Royston Calendar to promote our hobby. In 2012 we moved to Bassingbourn Village College and held our biggest exhibition to date, arranging a free bus service from Royston to help ease car parking demands. All exhibitions have a good standard of scenic details to catch the eye and several layouts will have appeared in articles published by the main model railway magazines. We also choose layouts that have trains running most of the time! With many visitors spending more than 2 hours at the exhibition, we feel it is important to provide food and hot drinks (with seating) and make it available throughout the day. At our exhibitions, we always try to provide a variety of layouts, from small table top size to some that Model Railway Exhibition require a large room. We also have a special ‘Thomas’ layout giving children (and possibly adults) a chance (Bassingbourn College) e’ Bus to drive a train, many for the first time. All the proceeds from this go to the Children in Need charity as do monies raised the face ‘Heritag Freefrom painting activity. To & from Each year we have strived to increase the number of layouts of various scales selecting them from clubs and private individuals from ionall Bus Stat Royston over East Anglia. This year we will display our club layout of ‘Appleton Dene’ which has been featured in the November(Via 2013 edition of the ay Station) Railw hours Railway Modeller magazine. We will also have demonstrations such as models, scenery and miniature tree making. 10.00, 11.00, 12 noon & 14.00, 15.00 There are ‘trade stands’ offering new and second hand items from small tools to parts and complete kits from small businesses to the latest boxed railway set by the main UK model railway providers, such as Bachmann and Hornby. We see many visitors from the Royston and East Anglia area every year, others from further afield. Some see it as a fantastic opportunity to purchase some early Christmas presents! Whether you are an experienced modeller, just starting in the hobby, or returning to the hobby after a period of absence all are welcome. Come along and give us a look over. No obligation to join the club. This year’s exhibition is held at Bassingbourn Village College, South End, Bassingbourn, Nr Royston, SG8 5NJ, 16th November 2013 – opens at 10.30am

A free ‘Heritage’ bus will be running to-and-from Royston Bus Station (Via Railway Station) throughout the day: 10.00, 11.00, 12 noon & 14.00, 15.00 hours

Subject to weather conditions, the Royston Model Engineers will again be offering sit-on rides behind their lovely model railway steam engines in an outside area.

Saturday 16th November 10:30 am - 5pm

Accompanied children will be allowed in for free! (Adults £4) For more information and pictures of previous exhibitions please see our web site http://www.roystondmrc.co.uk

BLOOMING STATION

Members of the Royston in Bloom committee, volunteers and station staff helped rejuvenate an area of Royston Train Station with planting and the laying of sedum matting purchased from Sedum Blankets. A new Welcome board has also been installed after the original one needed to be replaced as it depicted Royston 2012: A Year of Celebrations. Royston in Bloom committee chairman Les Baker said: “The work has transformed one of the banks at the station into a more attractive area.” Both the new signage board and the cost of providing the sedum matting were sponsored by First Capital Connect.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

A choir of 150 singers including Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society, Broxbourne Chorus, Royston Choral Society and an orchestra of 60 will perform at Wodson Park Sports & Leisure Centre in the evening of Remembrance Sunday 10 November at 7.30 pm. In the spirit of remembrance, the main work in the programme will be Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. Other works will include Elgar’s Nimrod, John Williams’ Hymn to the Fallen (from the film Saving Private Ryan) and Parry’s I was glad. The choirs previously came together at Wodson Park to sing Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in June 2012, described as ‘powerful, uplifting and thoroughly enjoyable’. All profits from this year’s concert will go to the Ware branch of the British Legion Poppy Appeal. The Royal British Legion was founded in July 1921 and is the leading ex-Service organisation and one of our best-known and most highly respected charities. The Poppy Appeal is their main source of income each year. Tickets cost £20 and as all the proceeds go to the Poppy Appeal we would be very grateful if this could be Gift Aided. We are also looking for sponsorship from individuals, other charities and businesses. Please contact Heather Howard on 01763 249058 or 07970739249 for further details.

COMMUNITY

OUT & ABOUT

The Royal British Legion

REMEMBRANCE DAY The Royal British Legion are in everybody’s minds at this time of year and the Poppy Appeal is in full swing but what else do they do for our community? I had the pleasure of chatting to Chris Murphy who is Branch Chairman of the Royal British Legion Royston Branch and he gave me a rundown of what the Legion means today for so many people. The Legion provides valuable support and resources to the serving and ex-Service community and their families. This is practical help to young and old with initiatives like the Battle Back Centres to support people who have returned from the most recent conflicts with disabilities. Chris emphasised that the wider community can play their part by ensuring that those in need of the valuable, practical and emotional support provided by the Royal British Legion are referred to the charity. Sometimes the camaraderie of being involved in the social side of the British Legion can be a tonic in itself. Chris said Remembrance Sunday, and Armistice Day - the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - the day the guns fell silent to end the First World War)

are of course major dates in the calendar. Villages, towns and cities across the country will come together to remember all those who have died in service to their country, from the First World War to the conflicts of the present day and all those in between, of which there are many. Chris also explained the three month process that he undertakes every year to organise the Remembrance Day Service and Parade which is held in Royston. This is part of the Legion’s role as “Custodians of Remembrance”. The process begins in August with the applications being made to the North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) for permission to close the roads and culminates on the day itself with Chris managing the proceedings and the 40-odd organisations that participate. It is vital we ensure the younger generations understand the life we enjoy and live today has come at great cost in human life. As the years and the conflicts pass and become more distant in the memory it is especially important to remember those who gave their last full measure so we may live in peace and freedom.

TRADEMARK TR ADEMARK

We must also remember those who are still with us, who through their Service may have suffered and will need help to deal with the issues they face. We remember the dead but we must not forget the living. So, this year, wear your poppy with pride but don’t forget the ongoing work of the Royal British Legion throughout the year as they stand “Shoulder to Shoulder” with all who serve. The Parade this year will set off from Queens Road, Royston at 10.25am on Sunday 10th November and arrive at the Melbourn Street Memorial at 10.40am. The main service will start at 10.45am. The Armistice Day Remembrance Service will take place on Monday 11th November at the War Memorial, Melbourn Street at 10.50am followed by a short service at the American memorial in the Priory Memorial Gardens. If people wish to join and support the Royal British Legion they do not have to have been in the Services, just have the desire to support the aims and objectives of the Legion. Please contact the Royston Branch of the Royal British Legion for more information on 01763 244560 or email rblroystonbranch@yahoo.co.uk

BOOK REVIEW: “A ROYSTON MISCELLANY” BY F JOHN SMITH

Royston is a fascinating place! If you don’t believe me have a look at F John Smith’s new book “A Royston Miscellany”. The author traces the origins of the street names in the town and then takes a look at the development of Royston from the Norman Conquest when the art of digging deep wells made the establishment of a town possible. The book would be an interesting read for anyone, but with a little knowledge of the places and spaces described and chronicled it is a fact filled insight into the rich history of the town. Do you know why “One Hill” on the heath is so called? Read the book to find out! “A Royston Miscellany” is written by F John Smith and is available from Royston & District Museum www. roystonmuseum.org.uk and Royston and District Local History Society www.roystonlocalhistory.org.uk for £7. It is a Royston and District Local History Society Publication.

LOCAL HISTORY PUBLICATION AND CALL FOR INFORMATION

The Pilgrimage to Our Lady of White hill: Antiquaries, local historians and the formation of a historical tradition, by Jonathan Spain, September, 2013. Local residents may be interested in this recent publication which describes the evidence for a medieval pilgrimage site at Chapel Hill, near Haslingfield and the role played by local antiquaries and historians in preserving its memory and maintaining the tradition over three hundred years through to modern times. It’s about how local history is created and what motivates those who have written about it. Call for personal recollections: Jonathan Spain is a writer/researcher who lives in Shepreth. This booklet is LOCAL AUTHOR the first in a series of local studies. He is JONATHAN SPAIN currently researching the history of fruit farming in South Cambs., and would be interested to hear from anyone who worked in the orchards. Last month’s article in the Royston Connects series praised and blamed the revolution in digital communication for its impact on our lives, including the breakdown of communities. But it was also suggested that online initiatives can connect people around local concerns which may then lead to face-to-face exchanges; three examples WORKING TOGETHER ONLINE follow. For ten years, people have been trading their time through Royston Time Bank, earning and spending time credits – 1 credit for 1 hour’s help. In recent years, an online facility has put the matching process in the hands of time bank members themselves and extended coverage beyond Royston. You can sign up for free at www. mytimebank.org.uk. Streetlife is a national social network with a local focus. Nearly 450 people in and around Royston are discovering the delights of sharing local knowledge and personal opinions. When asked “what do you like about Streetlife?” responses ranged from access to North Herts District Council and recommendations for local service providers, to intelligence on town centre developments and events information. You can join the online conversations at www.streetlife.com and start your own. The newest addition to the list of online matching facilities is Herts Skills Share at www.volunteeringherts.org/skills-share.html. Launched in September, this facility helps charities find volunteers with the professional skills to develop time-limited projects. Royston Volunteer Centre (info@ roystonvolunteer.org.uk) can help you make the most of Skills Share. Over to you - go to www.twitter.com/#RoystonConnects, find out more, and look out for next month’s Royston Connects article on saving the planet and making money.

AUTUMN ART EXHIBITION

Foxton’s exhibition team, led by Foxton School’s head Jenny Jones, are looking forward to welcoming all visitors and artists to the Autumn Art Exhibition’s 11th year at Foxton’s attractive and modern village hall. The exhibition had been held for many years as a very popular and highly regarded display in the old Foxton School building however, a move to a new site meant that the exhibition stopped for a few years. In 2003 it was enthusiastically resurrected and has since received praise from artists and visitors alike for the professional and tasteful presentation of work from local artists. Each year the exhibition has grown and since 2008 the works of art have been displayed in two large halls. In 2012 Karen Butler-Clark and her volunteers were delighted to receive the Art Exhibition award in the South Cambridgeshire District Council Arts Awards. Expect to see work by established and up and coming talented local artists. One regular and renowned supporter of the exhibition is Jane Hollidge, whose delicate ceramic work and stunning landscapes are very popular. Exhibiting artists for 2013 include Julie Baker, whose clever use of light and colour in her oil paintings creates beautiful evocative landscapes inspired by the Cambridgeshire Fens and Michael Papworth, a young artist, who, in 2012, won the visitor’s vote for the exhibition’s most popular exhibit with his image ‘Under the Moonlight’. Michael’s striking landscapes use texture, colour and the process of lithography to reveal the ever changing stories of nature All proceeds support the primary school in exciting ways including visual and performing arts. Exhibits are displayed in a variety of medias including ceramics, wood and textiles as well as oils, pastels, watercolour, ink and photography. Foxton Autumn Art Exhibition Fri 15th Preview evening. ROYSTON LEISURE CENTRE CHRISTMAS MARKET

On 1st December 2013 Royston Leisure Centre is hosting a Christmas Market to showcase some of the wonderful products and services available from local businesses. The centre will host 20 local companies, who will be selling their goods and services. During the day there will also be free swimming, children’s soft play and special exercise classes available, a small donation to charity will be suggested. The event is designed to increase the amount of Christmas trade within the town and encourage people to try what Royston has to offer rather than automatically looking elsewhere. Children are welcome along to enjoy the market, try the soft play activities and meet Santa in his grotto. The event will run from 1pm to 4pm with refreshments available. There will also be the chance to meet the centre’s two children’s mascots, Lenny the Lion and Zayn the Duck. ‘Getting Stuck In’ by Elaine Baigent

At the end of the day the Christmas lights will be switched on by the Mayor. We would like to thank Royston First, Redrow Homes, Curwens and Linda Turner Interiors for their financial support of this event. If you are interested in sponsoring the event or booking a stall, there are still opportunities to do so. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large, deep flameproof casserole and fry the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened and golden. Add the chilli pepper (if using) and chicken pieces and cook over a medium heat, stirring all the time, until the chicken pieces are lightly browned all over, adding a little extra oil if needed. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato puree, oregano and 200ml water and bring to the boil. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper then reduce the heat, partially cover and simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the kidney beans and diced peppers to the casserole and simmer, uncovered, for a further 20-25 mins until the peppers are tender and some of the liquid has reduced. Serve in mugs or bowls with chunks of warm crusty bread. For a hot non-alcoholic punch to serve with the stew, pour a large carton of apple juice into a saucepan. Core and slice 2 small apples and add to the pan with one thinly sliced lemon and a couple of cinnamon sticks. Heat gently for about 10 minutes, then pour in 1 litre of ginger ale. Heat through for a further minute then serve in heatproof glasses or tumblers.

New Business Launch

The Restaurant and Kitchen at Royston’s Conservative Club has earned the coveted “5 Star” rating from the Food Standards Agency agency, placing it amongst the top of Royston’s” places to dine”. The franchised establishment is operated by Ms. Dee Ireland and Ms.Nicola Kiddie as a part of their “Truly Scrumptious” business, and has been providing the club’s members with fine dining, bar meals, a variety of “Specials Evenings” and catered events since October of last year. The newly refurbished, air conditioned restaurant is ideal for smaller groups, but if you are considering a larger function, the fully licensed DW Room is available for hire. (Free to members; £50 to non-members, subject to terms and conditions). This venue will accommodate 50 comfortably in a formal setting, including a dance floor, or 70 to 80 in a more relaxed buffet style event. It is an ideal setting for all types of events; from Birthdays and Anniversaries to Christenings, or just general “Get-togethers”. Please feel welcomed to visit the club and view these venues. For further details please contact the Secretary, Wilf Leadbeater on 01763 246427 or email: enquires @roystonconclub.org. One year ago this month, a new concept was launched in Royston. Simply Cheesecake strove to stand apart from the other cakey businesses out there, offering a unique service in dessert provision. Our concept? Bespoke, freshly handmade, hand delivered, high quality cheesecakes made with love, dedication and commitment to creating a dessert which appeals to all palettes. We pride ourselves on making any flavour or combination desired, hence a creation of a peanut butter, chocolate and banana cheesecake. Whilst this may not be to everyone’s taste (certainly not mine!) we like to think we have risen to every challenge thrown our way, most recently in the creation of a Black Forest Gateaux cheesecake and a Jamaican Ginger cheesecake. We offer cheesecakes in a range of sizes – our ‘standard’ range from 8 to 16 slice, our ‘function/ wedding’ range which go from 24 to 32 deep slices, our bite-size tray bakes (as served in Glazed Creations) and our 3-portion ‘quarters’. Christmas is coming up and we have started taking orders for our seasonal Santa special – a white chocolate cheesecake with strawberry creamy Santas on top (pictured). Our most popular flavours are the Chocolate Orange, Strawberry and White Chocolate, Cookies and Cream and Tiramisu, but you are only limited by your imagination. We are also able to make some dietary specific alternative versions, such as lactose free. Please check out our website www.simply-cheesecake.co.uk or facebook page facebook.com/cheesecakesim for further information.

At the October meeting of the Royston WI AM the members enjoyed an illustrated talk by Richard Revels about Britain’s Wonderful Wildlife. The photographs he showed were stunning and had obviously taken him many hours of patience searching and waiting to capture the elusive wildlife so superbly. AM. will take place on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at The Hardwicke Hall (Upper floor) of Royston Town Hall. Coffee/tea is served from 10.00 am with the speaker following. PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

OSTEOPATHY

Local photographer, Clive Porter is currently displaying an exciting range of his work at Hogg’s Coffee House, located in the Corn Exchange, Market Hill, Royston. Clive, who is a member of both the Royston, and Melbourn Photographic Clubs, has been involved in photography since he was 14, when GEESE AT FOWLMERE BY CLIVE PORTER he was presented with a Kodak Box camera. He submitted his first photograph to a local newspaper in his home town of Colchester, just four years later. He still does work for the local press. Together, with his partner, Janet, he successfully operated a photography and publishing business in Cambridge, becoming the largest independent producer of postcards, and souvenirs in East Anglia for a number of years, producing items for Sandringham House, Kings College Chapel, and numerous other well known tourist locations before opening a small chain of retail outlets. The couple also produced their own range of greeting cards. Whilst HRH the Duke of Edinburgh was at Papworth Hospital over the Christmas of 2011, Clive presented him with one of his most famous pieces of work, being the image of the Indian Eagle Owl. The selection of photographs on display are evocative of Clive’s love for the English Countryside, flora and fauna, and his passion for steam engines, all of which are for sale, either as beautiful framed photographic images, or in just a quality mount, making them ideal beautiful Christmas Gifts. As Clive is famed for his photographic work, so the well established Hoggs Coffee House is well patronised for its quality range of distinctive teas, coffees, home produced cakes, and hot food. The Exhibition is open 9am until 5pm, Monday to Saturday.

ROYSIA WOMEN’S CLUB

We are now into the Autumn and dark evenings and our talks and demonstrations provide an interesting and varied programme over the winter season. October started with our social and at our next meeting Celia Gwynn visited the club to tell us about her passion for spinning. She demonstrated her spinning wheel and had brought along a selection of finished and dyed wools ready for knitting and a variety of products made from lanolin. Maggie Radcliffe has visited our club several times and returned to give us a slide show on “The 60’s”, a reminiscent evening looking back at life when we were teenagers and 20 year olds! At the last meeting of the month Len Little spoke on “What Do You Know about Drugs”, a fascinating and enlightening look at illegal drugs. During November we hear about care homes from Colin Evans and on another evening Sarah Boylan will be giving a demonstration of Jamie Oliver’s cookware. At the end of the month we will be enjoying our Christmas social with cheese and wine and the grand draw for our Christmas hampers. Funds raised from the sale of tickets for the hampers go towards our charity for the year, The Pituitary Trust. New members are always welcome. Why not join one of our meetings held in the Town Hall on Monday evenings which start at 8pm. Speaker meetings end at 10pm and Social Evenings at 9.30pm. For further details about Roysia Women’s Club please contact Wendy Pearce 01763 231381 or Mavis Ingle 01763 222524 or email roysia10@yahoo.co.uk.

At our October meeting Interior Designer Linda Turner gave an interesting talk on her Journey,(as she called it) She left school at 16 and always liked to make her own clothes. She even made her Wedding Dress. She joined a firm and learned the business from top to bottom, leaving after 4 years to start out on her own. She made all the curtains for her first house and in 1981 formed her curtain business. She runs this from a workshop with an office above in the grounds of her house. Her clients come mainly from referrals and recommendations but she also has a van with her details on the side. She used to do all the fitting herself but she now has a partner who does that part of the work. She is also training her youngest in the job. She finished by showing us some of her products. The Competition for a chiffon scarf was won by Beryl Elliott and first out of the hat for the raffle was Irene Wickes. Our next meeting is on November 14th.when we shall celebrate our 90th Birthday. We are also having a Lunch on the 21st at the Cambridge Motel. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 1.45pm to 4pm in the Heritage Hall. If you would like to know more about our Institute please contact our President Helen Barrett on 01763 849122 or me on 01763 261775.     

tooth and don’t want dentures, is it OK leave?

NO. You should NEVER just leave a gap when you’ve lost a tooth. Apart from cosmetic look, the main reason being the teeth surrounding the gap will start to move to fill the gap as you bite. This will cause these teeth to become loose and start exposing their roots, which leads to gum disease and tooth decay. Depending on the health of the teeth either side of the gap…for a back tooth I would normally recommend a ‘Dental Bridge’ This is s single false tooth which is held in place by the healthy teeth either side to gap. This can be done on our NHS contract, or for a more natural looking and longer lasting tooth (15-20 years) have it done ‘Privately’.

TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

Our October meeting was a “ Members’ Evening”, when the normal practice of a speaker was replaced by members providing their own contributions, such as reading, quizzes and games. A particularly interesting item was presented by Terry Ketteringham who had discovered an old Committee Minute book of the Royston WI, dated 1921. The Chairman at the time was Lady Newman from the Burloes Estate and the records give a fascinating insight into social affairs of the time. The usual activities of jam and cake-making were mentioned, together with a demonstration on how to make a footstool out of tin cans – the ultimate in recycling! The Townswomen’s Annual Rose Bowl competition then took place. Members submitted items of Arts and crafts for judging. First Prize was presented to Marjorie Parsons for a beautiful embroidered cushion, second prize to Margaret Lincoln for a delicate watercolour of roses. As usual, Members’ Evening proved to be an interesting and fun occasion. Royston Townswomen’s Guild meet on the first Friday of each month and if you would like to know more about our friendly welcoming group do please contact our Chairman, Elizabeth Hollamby on 01763 246347.

Well done to all who supported Royston in Blue this year - a staggering £18 877.87 has been raised for Teenage Cancer Trust. Awesome work!

NOTICE ANYTHING DIFFERENT?

‘People dislike change’ is one of those sayings that mean nothing. What I mean by that is that change is happening all the time – we are moving, the clouds are changing, the earth is spinning – and we don’t mind that at all. What we actually dislike is too much change, or to put it another way, ‘People dislike change that they dislike.’ It all comes down to what you notice in life. My children, for example, might not notice the car speeding towards them as the cross the road if their attention is elsewhere – on conkers or something equally fascinating. Although they can list JULIAN BERRY off all the different Haribos in a packet and their different flavours – whereas I hadn’t even noticed that there were different flavours! What you notice, and what you do with that information is also what we call experience. If you are employing staff, two candidates may have identical employment history, but their experience – and therefore their value to your organisation – could be very different indeed. Whether you are employing, or looking for work, your CV should not only include your work history, but also your achievements too. Not just where you were, but what you noticed and what you did. About this time of year, we also tend to notice people wearing poppies, reminding us of those who paid the ultimate price in the defence of our country. It’s a shame that our busy lives mean we only remember those who continue to risk their lives, when we notice the poppies in November. As 2014 is 100th anniversary of the start of WW1, I heard someone recently suggest we should all buy a packet of poppy seeds this November and sprinkle them in hedgerows or in our flowerbeds. Come the spring there will be loads of colourful splashes of bright red poppies everywhere. And we’d all notice that! www.julianberry.co.uk

Expand your network, exchange skills, share experiences, find opportunities, make contacts and get support to help in your return to work, is the message from the new Royston Job Club. The Job Club takes place on the last Wednesday of each month from 1 to 4pm in the Royston Library. There will be a Jobcentreplus adviser and a National Careers Service adviser attending each session to assist jobseekers in their jobsearching and have their CVs reviewed. The advisers will help with jobsearching issues, such as interview techniques and if necessary arrange additional appointments in the Jobcentreplus with their advisers to assist further. Work Clubs are a national initiative introduced to help unemployed customers into work before they become eligible for the Work Programme by developing a network of local venues where unemployed people can meet, share contacts and ideas and support each other through the job seeking process. Advisers aim to help find possible work experience placements to further assist in finding paid employment. Come along to the Job Club and discuss your employment needs. We look forward to seeing you there!

LEARN BRIDGE WITH ROYSTON BRIDGE CLUB

Royston Bridge Club are embarking on a new venture for anyone interested in playing the enthralling game of Contract Bridge, a card game based on whist, but with much more interest and challenges to it. As one attains better techniques and skill levels the game gets more exciting. Bridge is more than just a game, it is also a social event offering a widening circle of friendships. The game is a good way to keep your mind active and improve memory and analytical techniques. We are introducing Bridge courses for complete beginners and for those who can play but need refreshing into the modern techniques and conventions. The course objective is for trainees to reach a standard of play so they feel comfortable within a club environment, and thus continue to enjoy the game and learn further techniques. The courses are also suitable if you just want to play socially with friends. All ages are welcome. The course is on Tuesday evenings, 7.30 – 10pm on 22nd October 2013, in Litlington, Cambs, with a professional tutor. You will still be welcome, even if you have missed early lessons. REED FIRST SCHOOL CELEBRATES ITS 100TH BIRTHDAY! Pupils and staff celebrated Reed First School’s 100th birthday this week with a day dressed as former pupils would have been when the school officially opened on 13 October 1913. Hitchin Museum also visited the school and the children had the opportunity to take part in school lessons as they would have been taught 100 years ago. Reed School first opened its doors after the fields had been harvested and welcomed 37 pupils, aged up to 14, from the village and the surrounding area – many of them had previously had to walk across the fields to Barkway. There were originally two classrooms, divided by a partition, and these are still in use today as the school hall. The school currently has 41 children on roll and is still using the original admissions book which has had 1092 names added over the years. These include several generations of the original families and two children currently in the school are the third and fourth generation of their respective families to attend the school. A tea party was held last week for local residents and current parents to celebrate the 100th birthday. Among those welcomed back was a lady of 92 who still lives in the village where she started school in January 1926 when she was 5 years old. Children have created clay plaques which will be displayed in the school foyer to commemorate the 100th anniversary and have taken part in a centenary games event. They also held their own special birthday party and tucked into a cake made by Mrs Neale, Secretary, which was shaped like an owl, the school’s emblem. Headteacher, Mrs Jackie Harvey said: “I have discovered so much about the school’s history, which has been both fascinating and often touching. The school log book gives a real insight into how some aspects of education have changed over the years but it has also been interesting to find out that staffing, health and safety and high expectations of children’s achievement were as important to my predecessors as they are to me today. Over time the school has been threatened with closure and I am grateful that previous headteachers and the residents of Reed have worked together to keep it open.” Reed First School is keen to hear your memories and to collect copies of any photographs or other memorabilia you may have. We will be holding a Centenary Garden Party on 28 June 2014 for anyone who has a past or present connection with the school. Please get in touch via admin@reed.herts.sch. uk or call 01763 848304.

D-DAY ENACTMENT

Every year at St. Mary’s the children and staff remember the dramatic events of D Day by refighting the Omaha beach landings. This year Councillor Gerald Morris kindly brought along a fantastic DUKW amphibeous vehicle The children produced lively and imaginateive written work including poetry inspired by their experiences - some of the work will be on the school website so do have a look! www.st-marys-royston.herts.sch.uk/

HOMES & GARDENS

NOVEMBER 13 • ISSUE 99

THINK ABOUT YOUR GARDEN

Local landscapers Brownie Points advise on why now is the time to be thinking about next year’s garden.

The clocks have been put back and the cold weather is returning with a vengeance. You come home from work, draw the curtains and try to avoid the Christmas adverts that are beginning to claw their way into our reluctant lives. Time to think about landscaping the garden! No, I don’t have the early symptoms of hypothermia and I haven’t been at last year’s sloe Gin, I am serious. Think about the garden. Yes there are the standard jobs than need doing, putting away the garden furniture, collecting leaves and pruning, but what of actual construction? Well firstly, while it is fresh in your mind, what issues were raised when you were (not so long ago) still using the garden? Not enough shade, patio too small, missing a feature of some sort. Perhaps you would like your lawn to look better than that annoying bloke at number 12. Maybe you had plans and a budget, but couldn’t find anyone to do it? This leads me onto my main point; Act now or you will regret it! Sorry, perhaps a bit aggressive, but there is something to be said for acting now on plans for next summer. Firstly you may find that come April when you start to talk about Barbeques and vegetable patches, that there is a considerable waiting list from contractors (if there isn’t you should find a better one.) Secondly the sooner work is done the sooner plants will grow and the quicker the overall works will ‘settle’ into their surroundings. Thirdly and no less important is cost. Prices of plants are drastically cheaper in winter and quality is A1. Suppliers will be trying to offload anything over ordered and contractors will more often than not, lower their prices to ensure that they have adequate work to see them through. Worth thinking about?

GROUND COVER

HOMES & GARDENS

by Pippa Greenwood

Ground cover plantings are a wonderful way to create gorgeous carpets of colour in your garden, whatever its size and wherever it’s located. But what’s so special about groundcover growing, when is it most useful and when should you start?

The initial few months will take some effort, but once growing well, most ground cover planting needs little if any maintenance except perhaps a very occasional trim, some food and water in drier weather. It has a superbly smothering effect on the weeds, killing weedlings and deterring further weeds from appearing. The denser the groundcover planting, the better the effect. Autumn is a great time for planting. Trees, shrubs, climbers and herbaceous plants that go in to the ground at this time of year often establish extremely well as they have the luxury of enjoying the relatively warm and yet moist soil, a perfect place for new roots to grow out and establish rapidly. Make sure you invest a bit of time and effort in to the preparation. Clear the area of weeds, digging out all tough weeds completely if you can. Fork the soil over, removing debris such as large stones or buried rubbish and then fork in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, and perhaps a little slow-release feed too. If you’re planting up a slope, it’s worth trying to secure the soil a little too, as all that preparation and weed clearing will have loosened the surface and made it prone to erosion. Once growing well the roots of the plants will help to secure the slope brilliantly, but in the meantime, use landscape fabric pinned down onto the surface of the slope. Don’t be tempted to cram the plants in too closely. Given time they will form the desired effect if planted at the correct spacing. But if you fall in to the trap of planting them elbow to elbow, then they are more likely to become stressed and miserable, more prone to disease and will need thinning out. Make sure the plants are kept just moist at the roots until they’re well established and feed occasionally. By choosing varieties of plants which are recommended for use as groundcover you’ll be unlikely

to have to do much if any pruning. So what should you choose to grow? Foliage that is attractive and interesting makes a wonderful groundcover planting and if you wish you can add a few more flamboyant flowering plants to the mixture too. By using plants with interestingly shaped leaves or variegated leaves your leafy planting will look even better. If you want a reasonable effect all year around, then select at least some of the plants you use from the evergreens. These may lose their leaves, but they do so gradually so you’ll never be left with totally bare soil. Great Shrubby Groundcover Ideas Heaths and Heathers, Cotoneaster horizontalis and Cotoneaster microphyllus, Stephandra incise ‘Crispa’, groundcover roses eg the ‘Flower Carpet’ roses. Great Shade-Tolerant groundcover Ideas Sarcococca hookeriana var.humilis, Mahonia repens, Gaultheria procumbens, Hypericum calycinum, many hebes including Hebe pinguifolia, Euonymus fortune cultivars such as ‘Emerald n’Gold’, ‘Emerald Gaiety’ Herbaceous Ground Cover in Shadier Spots Sweet violets, pulmonaria (lungworts) eg the white-flowered ‘Sissinghurst’, Bugle (the ajugas eg Ajuga reptans ‘Burgundy Glow’), Lysimachia nummularia (Creeping Jenny), Lily-of-the-valley, Lamium ‘White Nancy’ and Lamium ‘Silver Beacon’, Bergenia Sunnier Groundcove Snow-in-summer, thymes, oregano, many of the sedums, chamomile.
