ROCKETING TO SUCCESS

Over the years last 30 years The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club has attracted members from across East Anglia and is widely recognised as one of the friendliest clubs in the country. The clubs race track is in Burns Road, Royston, which is easily accessible from the A505 Royston bypass. The clubs track was completely rebuilt in early 2013 with funding from the Sport England Inspire Fund and North Herts District Council so that it meets the current standards set down by British Cycling, the sport’s governing body, and now always provides close racing, whatever the weather. The Royston Rockets have qualified to be part of British Cycling’s Go-Ride Club Development Programme aimed at improving both young riders and clubs and focuses on volunteers and young members – improving coaching standards and increasing the number of young riders with access to coaching activities. Every Tuesday throughout the summer months (late April to early September) the Rockets run practice evenings and during the summer holidays a full race series which is based more on a riders ability rather than their age. This is an ideal opportunity for new riders to learn more about the sport of BMX racing and for the more experienced riders to practice their skills—and pass them onto new members. The Rockets membership covers all ages and abilities and it is not unusual to see a very young rider being helped round the track by a National Elite class rider.

Further information on the sport and the Royston Rockets BMX racing club can be found at www.roystonrockets.co.uk and www.bmxeast.com or email roystonbmx@aol.com

After the Grand Départ in Leeds on Saturday 5th July 2014, stage 2 of the Tour de France will begin in York and then Cambridge is set to experience the drama, speed, colour and excitement of the world famous Tour de France as stage three of the historic event starts in Cambridge on Monday 7th July! The competitors will set off at approx. 12.15pm from Parker’s Piece and cycle past St John’s and King’s colleges, along King’s Parade and Trumpington Street leaving the city via Trunpington Road. Heading south, the route continues through Trumpington, Great Shelford and Hinxton. Then Radwinter and Saffron Walden before heading to London and a thrilling finish in front of Buckingham Palace on The Mall, at about 3.30pm. The stage is considered “short “ at 159 km (99 miles) and is deemed flat and it is the final stage in England before the riders head back to France for the remaining 18 stages including six mountain stages and the final traditional route from Évry to Paris ending on the Champs Elysees. Marie Curie is the official charity partner of this year’s Grand Départ and we want as many people as possible to get involved and help raise funds. Want to donate now? Simply text TOUR to 70007

WOMEN’S CYCLING IS A BREEZE

Cycling has long been seen as the preserve of the MAMIL (middle-aged-man-in-lycra) but this is no longer the case. Women’s cycling is seeing a real growth spurt at the moment and hopefully with the inaugural Women’s Tour of Britain this year and the Tour de France on our doorstep we will see more women taking to the saddle. “When I started cycling a few years ago it was very rare to pass another female cyclist on my training rides, these days it’s rare not to pass several and they’re often seen riding amongst the male dominated groups and keeping up with the men and sometimes, overtaking them.” says Alice Barnes. Cycling is an amazing sport for keeping fit, it’s low impact and accessible to all. So why have women stayed off their bikes until now? One of the most common reasons cited by women is feeling unsafe in traffic or lacking confidence in tackling busy roads and junctions. To help deal with these aspects British Cycling and SkyRide created Breeze bike rides. Breeze offers free local rides (around the country) run by women for women. Some are on-road, some off-road but all are aimed at making women feel safe and confident on their bikes. In Royston we have two Breeze champions (ride leaders): Alice Barnes from Great Fit and Gemma Burge from Royston Leisure Centre. Several others ladies have recently trained as assistant leaders, so Royston Breeze is hoping to enable more rides to happen with the increase in leader availability. All the leaders are volunteers and give up their time to run and administrate the rides. As well as the Breeze rides there are now women-only sportives around the country, the most popular of which is the Cycletta which is championed by Victoria Pendleton. The Cycletta rides are well supported and marshaled with activities for the children and dads while the mums can go and ride. So what are you waiting for – get on yer bike!

In the garden... July Top tips and ideas to improve your garden

A well placed bench is sometimes all you need and could act as a focal By Melbourn garden designer Richard Arnott point too. www.thinkgardenthinkrichard.co.uk 4. Definition With everything 1. Training climbing plants growing so fast with the warm and wet weather Climbing plants are very useful for covering we have been having it is important to have some space in the garden without taking up as much control in the garden. One of the simplest things room as trees and shrubs, but they do need to be trained to get the best results. New growth is is to give definition between the grass and the flower bed with a well clipped edge. This can be being produced quickly at this time of year and needs tying in to wires to give it direction over the achieved with shears and an edging iron or you could consider one of the many garden products structure you are trying to cover. I recommend available. I like to use an aluminium product using vine eyes and galvanised wire. called Rite Edge that bends well to form shape 2. AUDIO VISUAL SERVICES MADE SIMPLE

T-AV Services is a new Audio Visual Company for 2014 set up by Tommy Verleg who lives in Reed; he is looking forward to becoming a part of the community of the very industrious and creative small businesses that are so much a feature of this area. Many people are a bit confused about what “AV” actually is – Tommy’s wife calls it “wires and stuff” – but Tommy can deal with something as simple as fitting a TV screen in a Doctors surgery, providing a PA system for a wedding or special event, installing a projector and screen into a classroom or even advising on, supplying and installing video /audio conferencing systems into your boardroom. He’d love to design and build a music studio as music is his passion! Recently he travelled to Belgium to support a local band with their on stage sound. Tommy also offer various packages for maintenance and advice - so like one of his now regular clients - you may already have a sound or AV system but need somebody to come in and iron out the bugs and then keep an eye on it to make sure things stay in good shape and working for when your clients need them. Tommy is an experienced AV Engineer who has worked in some of the most prestigious situations globally including embassies and top hotels and can count famous clothes designers, TV personalities and even Sheiks as clients. He worked freelance in Dubai on large concerts and was engineering manager at the Grand Hyatt during its opening years. In the UK Tommy worked for a Hertford company but he is now a father and decided that running his own business made sense as it allows him to structure his time around family life. He knows AV can be daunting and his aim is to make your life easier by offering you a polite and professional service with a friendly “can do” attitude and good technical know-how. He wants to develop strong and lasting relationships with clients who trust him and so far his repeat business ratio is impressive. One of his latest clients says: Thanks so much for sorting that all out for us. We are really pleased that it is all working again and glad to have found someone like you that we can call on in the future!!

INSPIRED BY THE TOUR - HAVE A GO YOURSELF!

Back in the depths of last winter, a group of keen local cyclists got together over a curry to discuss the possibility of meeting regularly to ride and so the idea of Royston Cycling Club was born. After an inaugural meeting to share ideas a committee was elected to get things properly set up. Club rides have been taking place on the roads around Royston every Sunday since the beginning of the year, usually split between 2 groups of different abilities. The aim is to ride for about 2 hours covering 25 miles for the steadier riders and more for those who are speedier on two wheels! If you like statistics, average speeds are roughly 13 and 15 miles-an-hour respectively, although faster riders are going out too, which is great; they are sent off separately so everyone is accommodated. The club meets from 8.45am on Sundays outside Mica hardware on the Market Square and leaves promptly at 9am. The ethos of the Club is to encourage adults to get out and ride – it’s not competitive. If you’d like to know more, check out the club’s website - www.roystoncc.co.uk . There you’ll find some Ride Guidelines which cover the way they approach riding or if you have specific questions send them an email: roystoncc@ hotmail.com . The club also has a Facebook page (search for Royston Cycling Club). Anyone interested is welcome to go for a ride with them before deciding whether to join.

The club has a Facebook page (search for Royston Cycling Club) and the website is www.roystoncc.co.uk

Royston Picture Palace, Town Hall, Melbourn St,

FILMS IN JULY Royston SG8 7DA Book on-line www.roystonpicturepalace.org.uk Fri 4th at 7.30pm THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY (12A) In 1962, a well-heeled couple come to know an American expatriate acting as an Athens tour guide. But an incident at the couple’s hotel puts all three in danger and creates a precarious interdependence between them. Sat 5th at 7.30pm X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (12A) The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from the past. Fri 11th at 7.30pm NEXT GOAL WINS (15) In 2001, the tiny Pacific island of American Samoa suffered a world record 31-0 defeat at the hands of Australia, garnering headlines across the world as the worst soccer team on the planet. Against a backdrop of serial underachievement, the team face the daunting prospect of a qualification campaign for the upcoming 2014 World Cup. Sat 12th at 7.30pm THE TEMPEST (U) SPECIAL EVENT This culminating masterpiece of Shakespeare’s career pits the desire for revenge against the demands of love and asks if man is capable of creating a brave new world. Filmed LIVE in high definition over three performances, this spectacular and griping play is captured by 14 high definition cameras that give the viewer an upfront and intimate theatrical experience unlike any other. Fri 18th at 7.30pm GODZILLA (12A) In Summer 2014, the world’s most revered monster is reborn as Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures unleash the epic action adventure “Godzilla.”

Sat 19th at 3.00pm MALEFICENT (PG) Exploring the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Sat 19th at 7.30pm GRACE OF MONACO (PG) Focused on the personal story of former Hollywood star Grace Kelly during a dispute between Monaco’s Prince Rainier III, and France’s Charles De Gaulle over tax laws in the early 1960s. Fri 25th at 7.30pm JIMMY’S HALL (12A) In 1921 Jimmy Gralton’s sin was to build a dance hall on a rural crossroads in Ireland where young people could come to learn, to argue, to dream... but above all to dance and have fun. Sat 26th at 3.00pm BELLE (PG) Inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield and his wife, Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, yet her status prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing. Sat 26th at 7.30pm EDGE OF TOMORROW (15) The epic action unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again...and again.

WORLD CUP BBQ FOOD FROM KNIBBS With the World Cup and summer upon us, there really is every excuse to gather friends around for a BBQ this month. Knibbs Meatsafe in Royston has created a special BBQ box of meats, which contains enough to feed ten hungry people (or twelve with less robust appetites). Add a salad and bread rolls to the meal, and create a simple feast! For a simple pasta salad to serve alongside the bbq’d meats, cook up enough penne pasta to serve the crowd in a pan of boiling, salted water. Halve cherry tomatoes and cut a ball of mozarella into chunks. Once the pasta is cooked al dente, reserve a couple of tablespoons of the cooking water and drain the pasta. Add the water and a generous drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, the cherry tomotoes and mozarella chunks. Toss together and serve in a large serving bowl. Season with a twist of black pepper and freshly torn basil leaves. You can serve this patriotic-coloured pasta salad serve warm or cold.

WARM SUMMER WEATHER? TIME TO BUY YOUR HEATING OIL! With fuel poverty on the rise and energy bills rocketing, heating oil users across the country are feeling the strain. If you’re looking to make a difference to your bank balance, check out our useful tips for smart, simple ways to save money on your next heating oil order.

Watch the weather

Oil prices typically decline during the spring and summer months, when temperatures are high and demand is low. By topping-up your tank this summer, you can take advantage of these great prices and stay warm in winter for less.

Compare prices

You might have a regular supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around, or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil.

Buy in bulk

Did you know that several small orders of heating oil will generally cost you more than one large order? Instead of topping-up your oil levels on a regular basis, fill-up in one go to cutdown on delivery costs and get a great bulk-buy price.

EARLY BIRD TICKETS FOR ROYSTON ARTS FESTIVAL

Around 50 events and exhibitions taking place during this year’s arts festival, running from Friday 19 September to Sunday 28 September. Another highlight will be the return to Royston of its most famous musical hero, the worldrenowned trumpet player Alison Balsom, who be taking part in a one-off ‘conversation-with’ event (supported by Curwen’s). She will talk about her rise to classical stardom, ranging from her roots playing trumpet while attending Greneway and Meridian Schools to becoming the 2013 Gramophone Artist of the Year and her flourishing international career. Indeed, one of her last concerts before attending the Arts Festival event will be at the Hollywood Bowl. As part of the event, Alison will take a student from the Royston Music School through a short masterclass. Alison is president of Creative Royston and patron of Brass for Africa, and all profits from the event will be donated to the charity which is supporting a life-changing music programme for disadvantaged children. Her appearance at the Arts Festival comes just before she begins a nation-wide tour to promote the release of her new album Alison Balsom: The Trumpet Sings. WORLD-RENOWNED TRUMPET PLAYER ALISON BALSOM MAKES A WELCOME RETURN TO THE SEPTEMBER FESTIVAL

The event will be taking place at Greneway School on Saturday 27 September at 3pm. Discounted early-bird tickets will be available for the main events this year from 1 July to 31 August.
