Welcome to our first issue of the New Year, coined our ‘Love Issue’, which takes the topic of love way past cupid. Each year we have a different take on the topic of love. This year, we put the focus on love for where you live, as there is no place like the place you call home. Like you, our small team at The LIST loves the vibe of the south shore…we live here too. Whether you work, play, or reside here, our charming coastal communities are just minutes from spectacular bay views and ocean beaches. To us, our iconic landmarks have a special significance because they portray ‘home’. Our cover shot of the beloved Captree Bridge, taken by local photographer Scott Heaney, brilliantly captures this magnificent view of spring awakening. The early freeze on the bay representative of the tug of war game Mother Nature often plays with us this time of year. Despite her fickleness, we know there is promise of a new day and a new season. Spring awakening is time to refresh our lives and our homes. Inside this issue you’ll meet two sisters who are award winning interior designers. They share some insights about decorating trends and classic designs that are always in style. I am sure like me, you will be very impressed with their work. Although their clients span from the Hamptons to the North Shore and Manhattan, they too love and live on the coastline of the south shore. Spring is the season for new beginnings, with each day a new opportunity to live better. This year we place a whole lot of emphasis on better living and are committed to exploring and sharing various ways to create improved wellness, balance and happiness in our lives. For those couples who recently got engaged, our vibrant young columnist, Julianne Mosher gives us an update on what’s trending in weddings. A healthy body, mind, and spirit are key ingredients for a better quality of life for all of us. We know many of you also feel this way, which is why Better Living will be an ongoing theme in the magazine this year. There is an abundance of information at our fingertips and we are fortunate to have many resources and professionals available to us locally who can help us live a better life. We at the LIST are committed to explore and share various ways of incorporating small changes that might make a big difference in living better. We asked a few well-respected people in our community for their thoughts on what ‘Living Better’ or ‘Better Living’ means to them, and wanted to share their wise words with you.

ANDY TARTAGLIA, Co-owner of Verde Kitchen & Cocktails and Coastal Kitchen & Daiquiri Bar. Beginner Yogi, late night philosopher, middling author. I am no one special, just a human being trying to enjoy the human experience as best I can. I like this phrase “Living Better” because it implies action. Feeling good takes finding a balance between effort and ease. The EFFORT: There is such a broad range of ideas on how to live better. Most of them probably work… to some extent. The first effort, in my opinion, is to find what works for you. You’re not going to be living better if you’re torturing yourself to be on someone else’s path. I like to focus and put a little extra effort on the simple things. It’s the “little things”, such as kindness, that are basic, but also grand. Kindness is the new cool and that’s not a cliché. I make an effort to feel good internally so that I can act with hopes of creating a kind environment in my small circle. There is so much fear and anxiety inherent in the world. Millions of years of fight or flight adrenaline and survival instincts, now less necessary parts of the human condition, have not existed without consequence to the human psyche. Be it from their past, present, or future worries, people carry angst with
them. On top of that, you just never know what burden someone else is carrying. Actions based on these reflexes or anxieties can add to the craziness of our already intense LINY world. Sometimes, simple kindness begets kindness. To give myself the best opportunity for BEING “my best” I find it valuable to keep myself FEELING “my best”. I try to take time out of my busy work and personal life for self-care. For me, that’s a regular yoga practice, exercise, maybe a massage or a float session once a month, and of course time with friends and family. Insert here whatever makes you feel well, balanced, and happy! Whether you are flying a rocket ship or just walking down the street, the better you feel in your own skin, the better you can be. Feel good, play good! THE EASE: Don’t be afraid to do things that feel easy and make you happy. Our own inner voice is often-times the harshest critic in our lives. Accept yourself. While you work on Living Better, remember to be appreciative of living at all. Then it all becomes cyclical. Feel good, feel happy; be good to others, be happy. Simple advice from someone who’s simply trying to live better. See you out there!

In a world where everything seems to be moving at ever-increasing speed, it is easy to become swept into the swirling activity of our ever-so-busy lives. Are you fortunate enough to own one of those heart-shaped jewelry boxes that expand when needed? As seen on TV and invented by a mother, it boasts a unique design that defies the laws of nature. The more gems placed into the box, the larger and sturdier it becomes.
So, I guess size does matter. How big is yours? Truth. Right before birth, tucked deeply within satin folds, we all have a heart-shaped jewelry box that’s maxed out in size, overflowing with all that shines. But, upon entering the world the box empties and collapses as a form of protection, relying on others, namely the adults who revolve around the newborn star, to re-fill it. When done according to plan, the Universe smiles and sighs with satisfaction. Family Jewels. Every smile, hug, kiss, word of encouragement, pat on the head, acknowledgment, validation, teachable moment, celebration of being, and gentle steerage help to fill and fortify the interior. In best case
scenarios, children keep the chambers of their heart-shaped jewelry box open and ready to receive, trusting those who have lived longer will continue to drop trinkets inside. Taking Inventory. Recently, I felt moved to re-examine and take stock of my own heartshaped jewelry box. It was hidden beneath the rubble of everyday demands and detours, upside down with its contents strewn across the floor. I allowed myself the luxury of time to examine the pieces as I returned them to their rightful place with newly minted mindfulness. There was a delay in my knee-jerk reaction to mourn what was lost, which allowed

me to focus on what remained. Small shifts create space for big victories. Diamond Clarity. As I counted the gifts life and those I love had given me, it occurred to me that I wasn’t as generous in gifting myself. I couldn’t remember when I added to my own stash. Any pearls of wisdom I might have harvested over the years were buried under cheap baubles and glittery diversions. Digging deeper, I found the bad mood ring which I wore too often in my 20’s and 30’s. I kissed it, then tossed it with a grin. I actually belly laughed when I picked up my old tiara, strands of over-processed blond hair were still tangled in it. Coronation. Heads tend to swell in youth. The tiara was too big and wouldn’t sit comfortably on my head. When it landed on the floor, I smiled and wrapped it carefully in safe keeping for the princess who already knows how to rule with love, my granddaughter, Piper. I left the hair as a keepsake. When I returned her crown to my heartshaped jewelry box it expanded

and felt sturdier as promised. Silver Linings Playbook. The upside of getting older is when we habitually count our blessing and make regular deposits to our heart-shaped jewelry boxes by gifting ourselves. The math is still challenging, but I’m committed to mastering it. Dog-eared selfhelp books about manifesting abundance have lost their sheen because I’ve learned a glittering truth. Simply by being alive and healthy, we can all accrue wealth that can’t be quantified. Eureka, what a gold rush! Take a Bow. Each of us can stand on a podium to a round of applause by continuing to re-gift others. By living well and paying kindness forward we can earn precious metals…so what if they wind up in our teeth and knees. But, watch your back while bowing. Going low is easy, but rising with grace requires full attention and care. Try holding your expandable, heart-shaped jewelry box closely to your chest for balance. It works like a charm when you continue to practice. Namastayin’alive!

TWO SISTERS, ONE PASSION,
INFINITE IDEAS BEAUTIFUL INTERIOR DESIGNS DO NOT HAPPEN BY CHANCE Walk into any home and you will always notice a room that’s well-designed. You can tell it was done by a professional because of the spacing and layout. The furniture is correctly balanced and proportioned to fit the room, and its functionality works with the needs of the people who live in it.
We chatted with Mary and Nancy from Twice as Nice Interiors, who offered valuable insight for design ideas and shared some of their favorite projects.
WHEN IS IT TIME TO REFRESH YOUR HOME? MARY & NANCY: The heavy traditional look that was once very popular may just feel too dark and weighted. People are exploring a more out-of-the-box, colorful side, but it’s important your home be a reflection of who you are, not a page out of a catalog. This is how we can help. We will never tell you to ditch the stuff that speaks to your soul, but if you're longing for a design upgrade and aren't sure where to start, ask yourself if your home décor is full of looks that have worn out their welcome. You do not have to toss everything you own; you can incorporate those high ticket items in a new and interesting way. We love using a client’s furniture pieces and giving them a new life! One of the benefits of working with a designer is we know which pieces are worth investing in.
We refreshed and brightened up this dining/ living room space dramatically by painting the walls BM White Dove. This client was not into grey tones, so we decided to use tans and chocolates. The ceiling was redesigned by us and painted all white to give it a neo-traditional feel. We used a lot of contrasting black and luxurious gold for upholstery fabrics and décor. We kept elements of the traditional living room, like the gold gilded mirror above the fireplace, and added some modern lamps and vases. We updated the traditional tufted sofa by adding gorgeous couture silk tie dye pattern pillows. Her French Bergere chair was reupholstered with a stunning black, white, and gold fabric. The result: sophisticated, elegant, timeless.

WITH HGTV AND PINTEREST FLOODING OUR FEEDS WITH GREAT IDEAS, IT CAN BE EASY TO FALL INTO THE TRAP OF BUYING INTO THE LATEST TRENDS. CAN YOU OFFER SOME ADVICE ABOUT INCORPORATING WHAT’S TRENDING? MARY & NANCY: We get asked that question a lot. Trends come and go: we only
encourage including trends in your home design if a style really resonates with you and can easily be switched out. We don’t advise our clients to invest in expensive pieces that may soon become out of date. For instance, we are saying ‘So long’ to the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year, which was Ultra Violet, and ‘Welcome!’ to Living Coral, the new color for 2019. It’s customary to want to follow all the current fads. This is where you can use fashion accent pieces for your home, like pillows and throws. They are stocking the shelves at Home Goods as we speak. However, if you invest in expensive items, like bold drapery or large, custom sofas just because it’s current in all the style blogs, you may tire of it quickly. Splurging on what’s in style for the season might also make you feel locked in to that particular style and prevent you from updating your space. That said, if you find a trendy statement piece that really calls out to you, then we are all in!

This family room in a West Islip home is perfectly polished, yet its vibrant colors make it cheerful and welcoming with plenty of space for family members of all ages.
Meet award winning interior designers Mary Middlemiss and Nancy LaCalamita, sisters and owners of local boutique interior design firm, Twice as Nice Interiors. Passionate about creating beautiful spaces, this dynamic duo opened their full design studio in East Islip in 2002. Although the south shore is their home base, their clients span from the Gold Coast of the north shore all the way out to the Hamptons. Specializing in residential and corporate design, their systematic approach saves both time and money while delivering gorgeous functional spaces. “Each client has different needs, desires, and budgets that pertain to their lifestyle” says Nancy. “It is our job to extract that information and create beautiful spaces that they will enjoy for years to come. Whether it’s a 6,000 square foot estate, or small beach cottage, we work with all budgets and all styles of design. No project is too big or small. Construction, interior, exterior, outdoor living spaces… we do it all. ”
CLASSIC DESIGNS ARE ALWAYS IN STYLE This family room we worked on a few years ago and I love it just as much today as I did when we designed it…good designs are timeless! The color palette is very soothing in various neutral tones with a little bit of robin’s egg blue. Casual doesn’t have to mean boring, and casual can be elegant as well. We used lots of beautiful embroidered linen which makes the room feel special. Custom sheer drapery was designed to soften the large wall of windows, creating a gorgeous backdrop for this space.
Much of their success stems from their diversity and ability to complement each other’s style. While Nancy has a love of vintage and rustic, with an eye for detail; Mary tends toward classic, elegant designs that have perennial style. Says Mary, “Our objective is to always create stylish, sophisticated interiors that will remain effortlessly timeless. It is very important to us that each project reflects the lifestyle of the homeowner. We love sharing our knowledge with clients and working together with them to create a vision, and then to bring that vision to life.”

So now that young people are starting to plan their weddings, the trends and fads that were popular even just 10 years ago are long gone. Things have changed – and not in a bad way. Millennials love to pick and choose certain highlights from past generations. Don’t worry, many traditions are still valued… but here are some of our favorite things that brides-to-be are jumping on in 2019.

You really don’t need a wedding planner anymore; all you need is a smart phone, a computer, and the website Pinterest.com. On this site, there are thousands upon thousands of ideas available to young brides who literally have no idea where to start. Other couples share what they did at their weddings, and you can pick and choose what you like best. There are ideas for wedding invites, food, locations, floral arrangements, favors, and even dresses – plus so much more.
Making Everything
I‘ nstagrammable’ Social media has a huge influence over the millennial generation. Constantly connected to our phones, we document our lives on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. People have caught on to that virtual necessity, and have hashtags for Instagram photos dedicated to the wedding. Some include the last name of the new couple like, “HappilyEverAllen”, or something simpler like “JonesWedding2019.” The idea is to get creative, and puns or play on words are always welcomed. Hashtags are helpful because when you click on the tag, all the public photos taken at the wedding are viewable, so if you miss a moment you can see someone else’s pictures!

And so are the little people that stand on top. Couples now like to monogram their initials or last name on top of the cake instead of the typical bride and groom figurines. Those giant wedding cakes with lace and over-the-top icing designs are no longer in fashion, as most young brides are actually choosing simpler cakes with fresh flowers on top. If singing makes you happy, check out Babylon Bean on Wednesdays for their open mic night. First date? The Post Office Café has a fun, casual atmosphere with cozy booths and great pub food. Feeling comfortable? Order the big Bavarian pretzel to share. Feeling saucy? Boldly dip your pretzel into that gooey melted smoked Gouda & onion fondue. Visit a wine bar. They are, by definition, intimate. The dimly lit, swanky ambiance of Molto Vino is a perfect place for a date.

settle down. Do not abruptly put the bad doggy in, slam the door, and then walk away. Just like a child, who you might scold and then send somewhere to calm down, the crate is that place to help pacify the dog.
A dog can be taught to love the crate through positive reinforcement, resulting in the crate becoming their own safe and private place, much like a bedroom for a child. The crate is somewhere the dog can go and not be bothered; it's a perfect destination when the dog is tired or nervous, or if you have company over. Dogs have a natural instinct to be in a den. Many dogs take to a crate very easily.
Once the crate is established as a happy place for your dog, then it becomes their den. During the day the crate door should be left open; close the door at night when you are sleeping to keep your pooch safe and snug.
Crates should not be used for direct punishment. A dog should be corrected, and then be placed in the crate to

Make the crate a happy place. Do not force your dog into the crate, introduce them to the crate gradually. Toss in a toy, throw in some cookies or treats. A
soft mat or comfy bed will help make the crate cozy. Crates fold down easily, and most are very portable. What’s great is that once the crate is established as your dog’s “room”, you can take it with you when and wherever you bring your dog, and he will always feel at home. • 2 limes for juice • 1 bunch fresh cilantro • 4 cloves garlic • 1 10 oz. pkge. fresh shelled edamame, divided • 3 Tbsp. olive oil
• ¼ tsp. crushed red pepper
• ½ tsp. ground coriander
• 4 (about 24 oz.) firm white fish filets, such as halibut, bass, or snapper
• 4 cups baby spinach
• ½ tsp. kosher salt
• 2 8 ½ oz. pkgs. Quinoa and brown rice blend • 1 cup no-salt-added chicken broth
• ¼ tsp. pepper

1. Squeeze limes for juice (about 2 Tbsp.). Remove cilantro leaves from stem. 2. Pre-heat large, non-stick saute’ pan on medium-high heat for 2-3 mins. Season fish with salt, pepper, and coriander. Place remaining 1 Tbsp. olive oil in pan, then add fish. Cook 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden and 145 degrees. Remove from pan and cover to keep warm.
