Akala O2 Ritz | £16.50ADV | 7pm With BAFTA and MOBO awards, a series of articles in the Guardian, TEDx talks, and a theatre company amongst his ever-growing repertoire, Akala is not your average rapper. Since releasing his award-winning debut album ‘It’s Not A Rumour’ back in 2006, the selfproclaimed “Black Shakespeare” has accelerated to prominence in the political sphere as well as in the hip-hop scene. A talented lyricist and fiercely articulate speaker, his opinions on topics ranging from education, gang culture and street violence to voting and veganism

The Streets O2 Apollo | £39.50ADV | 7pm Arguably the most prominent crew to thank for elevating noughties grime to the mainstream, The Streets barely need an introduction. A one-off, and the first since 2011, ‘The Darker The Shadow The Brighter The Light’ may be something of a greatest hits tour, but when timeless 10

Mabel Band On The Wall £12.50ADV | 7pm One look at this R&B rising-star’s parents and it’s clear that music was always going to be in her blood. The daughter of Swedish singersongwriter Neneh Cherry and Massive Attack producer Cameron McVey, Mabel is determined to blaze her own Minnie Riperton infused, Beyonce-influenced trail. Signed at just 18, she has spent the three years since refining her own musical identity, independent of her undeniable pop heritage. The viral ‘Know Me Better’ was her most recognisable song on Spotify for ages, before more recent collaborations with Not3s saw her

Of Mice & Men O2 Ritz | £22.50ADV | 7pm Not to be confused with the theatre adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1937 rags-to-riches tale of the same name - which is also, coincidentally, in Manchester this month. Bringing their own brand of energetic, infectious metalcore, these guys are the happiest hardrockers on the scene right now. Defiant despite the departure of their long-standing frontman last year, the band came back to the 2017 festival season fighting with a tenacity that has quite rightly earned them another headline tour. 24.04.18

Natalie Prass Band on the Wall £12.50ADV | 7pm

This four-piece psych-infused indie outfit from East London released their well-received debut album ‘A Dream Outside’ in 2015, and spent the next two years writing and rewriting a follow-up, before scrapping the whole thing and coming back (in their own words) a “totally different band”. With the help of Glass Animals, MIA and Songhoy Blues producer Neil Comber, and emanating elements of Bombay Bicycle Club, their

“The record was ready to go, and then the election happened”, explains singer-songwriter Natalie Prass in a recent interview, as she describes scrapping an entire penned album and going back to the drawing board in light of political movements in her native USA. Gomez Albert Hall | £27.50ADV | 7pm Twenty years ago, the Bluesinfused sound of Southport fivepiece Gomez stood out against the Brit-pop, trip-hop and space rock which saturated the scene at that time. Two decades and seven studio albums later, the band look back on a career that, despite resting somewhat relentlessly on the fringes of the mainstream, spawned a number of fondlyremembered riffs and a staunchly loyal following. Reminisce on a golden age of British guitar in the company of the fellow Northerners and late nineties legends.

Fresh out of the South East London scene, cousins Mike and Joel have a mutual love of music. Their progressive, expressive, electronic sound is packed with spiralling electronic loops. Records that start off as lengthy jams are separated to become a “collage of ideas” in the form of musical vignettes, that flow from one to the next with exacting continuity. Dark-hued rhythms and minimal beats steeped in tranceinfused synths encase sparse, eclectic lyrics that encompass a veritable mashup from religious texts and a biography of Marlon Brando.

FUTURE I

ISLANDS In life, the formula of success can be broken down into to three key things; passion, determination and a stroke of luck. As we sit down with bassist William Cashion, these attributes ring true of Future Islands’ story.

Future Islands’ passion harks way back to their college years. The three American amigos - Samuel T. Herring, Gerrit Welmers and William Cashion – began their first musical escapade in 2003 forming the Kraftwerk-inspired Art Lord & The Self Portraits, alongside two other members. Following their college graduation in 2006 the trio regrouped and remodelled themselves into synth-pop outfit Future Islands.

“I’m really proud of the body of work that the three of us have created over the years, including our stuff before we were in Future Islands” explains William. “At this point, we’ve released five albums, a lot of singles and EPs and I’m really proud of the work we’ve been able to create and put out to the world.” The group’s determination lies in the 4 albums, and 9 years which they channelled into the band before their hard work finally - and much deservedly – paid off in 2014, following their performance of ‘Seasons (Waiting On You)’ on The Late Show with David Letterman.

“It was really surreal to actually be in that studio filming because we grew up watching Letterman as kids and seeing bands perform on The Late Show. It was super surreal but at the same time TV doesn’t really have the same impact as it did for example in the 70’s or 80’s or at least this is what we heard from our management. We thought we are going to do this thing and it will be cool, then the tour will happen.”

level we were on the ‘Singles’ tour.”

Before this TV debut Future Islands were Baltimore’s bestkept secret, but following an upload of the clip to YouTube, the band’s luck changed just like the seasons. The video went viral, and Future Islands exploded, not just in the US but also worldwide.

“The ‘Singles’ tour was a period of crazy growth. After having slow growth for about a decade when our band was kinda slowly, slowly building audience size and catalogue but at a slow organic rate, after the Letterman performance, it just grew exponentially from there.”

William elaborates, “It totally surprised us and it took us a while From that moment to realise how on all eyes were widespread the transfixed on video had gotten. frontman Samuel It totally shifted T. Herring and his everything. A lot eclectic and spirited of festivals that dance moves. From had originally the chest tear to turned us down the hip shake, the called back with reach out to the William Cashion, Bassist ‘Hey we do want squat and the groin to book you guys’, thrust, his infectious which we were excited to play - energy was inspiring audiences for sure - but it was like why didn’t from the East Coast to the West. you want us before? [Laughs]” “He’s always been an extraordinary “The whole ‘Singles’ tour ended frontman even from our first shows up being way longer than it was at house parties when we first planned to be as we kept getting started back in North Carolina. I offers and extending the tour. At guess he’s just got this wild energy the beginning of the tour we were and we’ve gotten better at making in a sprinter van but by the end of sure he doesn’t accidentally the tour we had a full crew, a tour unplug guitars, overturn all the manager, lighting, a tour bus and pedals or knock over the keyboard a much larger production and we stands - these are all things that were so excited to be playing at the have happened over the years.”

“The Singles tour was a period of crazy growth”

[releasing] this one was definitely different. I feel the record is strong and people are getting it.”

“The biggest thing is the audience reaction, the audience are just out there with him and that’s what makes a really good show for us and that’s what energises all of us. Sam can still be wild on stage and if the audience isn’t responsive we come off stage and all feel bummed about how it went. The biggest thing is the audience’s energy for sure. They are the most important part of the show and without them, there would be no show.” Fast-forward to late 2016 and the band were releasing their fifth and latest studio album ‘The Far Field’, the follow-up to their monumental ‘Singles’ record.

“It hasn’t surpassed the last album but maybe that’s fine. I guess you do want every album to surpass the last one and honestly I haven’t seen the sales figures, so I’m not sure where this one stacks up against it but I do know for the last year we sold way more tickets for shows than we ever did at any point on the ‘Singles’ tour, so I know that live things are still growing.”

“Last year we sold way more tickets for shows than we ever did” William Cashion, Bassist

“It feels good and in a lot of ways, it feels like a continuation of the ‘Singles’ album tour, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I think part of us feels like maybe the last album is eclipsing this one and that’s because the last album had a big moment and we had the big Letterman push and it just changed the trajectory once that album came out and I think

of

Having performed over 1000 shows in their first 10 years together, and many more since then, it is clear that touring has always been at the heart Future Islands.

“Even from the very beginning we made a demo, so we could play it to the promoters, so they would book us and get us shows. Then once we had a full-length album that was like rocket fuel was poured and it gave us a full tour all over the US, Europe and the UK and we are unfamiliar with that world.” 21

hoping to make a pilgrimage to the cemetery to visit Ian Curtis’ grave as I’ve never had the chance to see it before and we’ve always stayed in Manchester and it’s going to be our first time in Macclesfield.”

The band have previously gone as far as to say that they “are stronger on the road than in the studio”. William explains, “We just have a lot more experience on the road, you know we were always recording knowing that it would get us out on the road.”

William and his bandmates like to hunt out the best coffee shops and After a sizable four-month break take in the sights when they tour the world. “When from touring, the we are on the road band jump back we have a lot of on the tour bus at day-to-day things the end of April. that we have to The trio will be do like the sound heading to our check and press very own spacerequirements but themed Bluedot if we have any Festival, near free time we try Macclesfield, for a to go sightseeing. galactic headline I got a folding show under bike last year and Jodrell Bank’s William Cashion, Bassist try and take the Lovell telescope bike out as I feel on the 19th that’s the way to July. “Just getting on that stage will kinda phase me in itself. I decided I wanted we love are from that area.” to get one, so I got a Brompton.”

“I always feel intimidated when we go to the Manchester area”

So what’s next for Future Islands? “It’s exciting every time we put a new thing out there because I feel like people who didn’t know us before might hear something from the new album and then

Future Islands cite New Order, who performed under the illustrious telescope back in 2013, and Joy Division as influences of their musical style and writing. “As the festival is close to Macclesfield I’m 22

we kept being like ‘keep at it maybe something might happen down the road’ and then we made enough money to pay our rent and that was enough, it was all we needed.”

12 years on from their formation, following the passion, determination and luck, which has infiltrated and propelled the band’s career, we asked what’s best about being in Future Islands. William reflects, “I guess being able to pay our bills and make this our career with our band.”

“I guess not having to get a 9-5 job is one of the best things about being in Future Islands but the other side of that is now I have a 24/7 job in another way.”

“You know we started it while we were still in college - we were young and broke for a very long time and

It would be easy to attribute Future Islands success to one show, some catchy tracks, and a handful of well-executed dance moves, but the true success of the band lies in their natural talent, and sheer determination to succeed in one of the toughest but most rewarding industries the world has to offer. Catch Future Islands at Bluedot Festival on the 19th July 2018.

May Bank Holiday Festival Guide A three-day weekend should not be wasted, so plan your double hit of May Bank Holiday weekends with precision. With a vast array of smaller citystyle fests showcasing some of the hottest new talent, which could easily be overlooked on larger festival line-ups, at a much thriftier price tag, there’s plenty on offer in MCR and beyond. Here’s our nifty guide to what’s on.

Neighbourhood Weekender 26-27.05.18 | Victoria Park, Warrington FRM£49.50 | 12.30pm Line-up: Courteeners + Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds + Jake Bugg + Blossoms + Circa Waves + Editors + Tom Grennan + many more Don’t Miss: Fickle Friends Top Tip: If you’re feeling flush, grab a VIP posh-nosh festival upgrade, which includes a 3-course fine dining meal, a glass of champers on arrival, 2 further drinks during your meal, and an after-party. In 2018 Neighbourhood Festival will decamp to a new site in Warrington. The new, longer 2-day event boasts a line-up to make any Mancunian proud, with local legends and emerging acts from the ‘neighbourhood’ including Courteeners, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Tom Walker, and Cabbage performing alongside the likes of Jake Bugg, Yonaka, and Lewis Capaldi. Day tickets are £49.50, with a whole weekend of fun coming in at just £95.

But before you go ‘Bonkers’ for the Rascal, ‘Dance Wiv Me’ to the likes of Charlie Sloth, Low Steppa, and none other than N-Double-A crew member and special guest Big Narstie. Other than £20 entry, it’ll only cost you a tram fare to get to, so it’s well worth the dollar dollar bills y’all.

Bearded Theory’s Spring Gathering 24-27.05.18 | Catton Hall, Derbyshire | FRM£100 | 1pm Line-up: Robert Plant + Blossoms + Jimmy Cliff + Sleaford Mods + The Jesus & Mary Chain + Jake Bugg + Idles + many more Don’t Miss: Idles Top Tip: Start growing that beard, now! one to watch: Lewis Capaldi Gordon Duncan is a big deal. As the founder of APB PR, over the past two and a half decades, he has helped to guide some of the most notable acts - including the Spice Girls, Massive Attack, Snow Patrol, Emeli Sande, James Bay, Jake Bugg, Blossoms and more - from relative obscurity to huge success. In the 25 years that I’ve been doing PR for bands and artists, I’ve watched the predominant means of music consumption go from vinyl to CD to digital downloads and now streaming. Much as I love to own something physical - reading the sleeve notes and wondering what all the people getting thanked actually did is one of the things that made me pursue a career in the

industry - streaming has a big advantage when you start out working with a new artist - you know very quickly whether their music is connecting with the public. I first met 21-year-old singersongwriter Lewis Capaldi just over a year ago in a bar in Glasgow, the day before his first ever release, a stripped back heart-wrencher of a song called ‘Bruises’, went up on Spotify. No-one outside a few hundred people who had seen him at local gigs knew anything about him but barely three months later, ‘Bruises’ reached 10 million plays on Spotify. Since then, he’s released four more cracking songs, sold out every single headline show he’s played and has just announced an autumn tour which includes London’s Shepherds Bush Empire (13th Nov) and the Albert Hall in Manchester (6th Nov), plus his first headline US tour. In one year. That’s unbelievable. As a PR, I felt Lewis was special from the start and, thanks to the growing power of streaming, I know that millions of people all over the world agree. His second year is going to be pretty special too.
