Contents Having just about survived Storm Ciara, Jorge and Dennis we’re dreaming of sunnier climates and what a better way to shift those winter blues than by booking in a getaway to a European Festival this summer. We’ve made decision making even easier with our 2020 European Festival Guide. Following on from last months Ones To Watch edition, we’ve sat down with the hotly-tipped Bang Bang Romeo, who tell us about their journey from performing on the Yorkshire pub circuit to supporting Pink at Wembley Stadium. Complaints pour in over XS Manchester closure

XS Manchester is hanging by a thread as the large shadow of Capital Xtra looms above the Spinningfields-based station. Listeners are campaigning to block the closure of beloved local radio channel, which has streamed classic rock across the Manchester airwaves since 2008. Ofcom has officially received more than 50 objections, and a final decision is expected shortly.

You Are Not Alone Festival returns to Manchester

Not all festivals are created equal. You Are Not Alone takes what Manchester does best – music – and channels it into a magnificent cause. On 28 March, artists will be playing across five iconic venues in the city – Mint Lounge, Gullivers, The Castle, 33 Oldham Street and The Rose And Monkey – and all proceeds will go to mental health charity Manchester Mind. Deja Vega, Argh Kid, Gathering of Strangers and HAiG are all confirmed on the bill, with dozens of others playing throughout the day.

Bjork stars on a dazzling Bluedot bill

Jodrell Bank never fails to deliver. Every summer, the Bluedot bill is brimming with talent from top to bottom – and 2020 is set to serve up another thrilling instalment of music, science and culture. Headliner Bjork is confirmed for a biblical set, with Groove Armada, Metronomy, Roisin Murphy, Squarepusher, Tim Burgess and Pussy Riot starring alongside her during the four-day festival in July. 9

SEED Ensemble

King Krule

Band On The Wall £12.50ADV | 7:30pm

Albert Hall | £22.50ADV | 7pm

The king of cool is back on the road with a new album in tow. And things have changed for King Krule aka Archy Marshall since he was last in Manchester in 2017. He’s a Dad, he’s swapped London for Cheshire and he’s developed an obsession with electricity pylons. What all of this means, we’re not quite sure, but we do know that his latest work, ‘Man Alive!’, is as dreamy as it is eerie and well worth 42 minutes of your time. The 25-year-old reckons it’s the best album he’s written and we can’t wait to hear it live.

London jazz ten-piece, SEED Ensemble, are heading out on their debut UK tour to celebrate a massive 12 months. Their first album, ‘Driftglass’ was deservedly nominated for a Mercury Prize and their line-up is a who’s who of the blossoming scene down south. Including Theon Cross from Sons of Kemet (also Mercury-nominated) on the tuba, trumpeter SheilaMaurice-Grey from Kokoroko and plenty more young and exciting talent. Combining West African and Caribbean influenced groove, 10

He’s managed to find the time to write, record and now perform live another new record. ‘NOIR’, is about growing into his adult life and the singles we’ve heard have a catchy psychedelic sound. In an intimate venue, we wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we’d have left this one off your list.

24.03.20

Smino

Manchester Academy 2 £16ADV | 7:30pm

One for the fans of laid-back, poetic rap, Smino delivers unique rhymes and a distinctive voice you won’t forget. The St-Louis wordsmith toured his hit debut album, ‘blkswn’, for a mammoth 18 months and apparently, that wasn’t enough.

25.03.20

Greentea Peng Soup Kitchen £12.50ADV | 7pm

You might’ve heard her husky, soulful voice, you might’ve been blown away by her ‘COLORS’ show on YouTube, you could’ve just admired her impressive tattoos and dense jewellery. Whatever it is, Greentea Peng is a performer you should be keeping your eye on. We’ve had her cosmic EP, ‘RISING’, on repeat since it came out last year. 2020 has got off to a flyer as well after winning best Breakthrough Act at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards. Do yourself a favour and get yourself in that Soup Kitchen basement at the end of March.

Agnes Obel

D Double E

Tired of the small talk at work? Sick of your flatmate not emptying the dishwasher? Fed up of the idle window shoppers on Market Street slowing down your walk home? Sounds like you need some therapy. We recommend a bit of escapism in the form of Agnes Obel at the Bridgewater Hall. Her beautiful blend of classical piano and elegant, atmospheric vocals will take you to another planet for at least a couple of hours. Give the Danish-born singer-songwriter’s latest release, ‘Myopia’, a listen and we dare you not to buy tickets when you’re done.

If you’re into your grime, D Double E needs no introduction. Any artist, DJ or fan of the genre will tell you he is the king. If you don’t claim to be a grime guru, you’ll recognise D’s inimitable flow from the incredible IKEA 2019 Christmas advert. But the East Londoner has given more to the game than a few novelty bars to promote flat-pack furniture. His influence stretches from the early days of grime right up to the current household names like Skepta and Kano. It promises to be an adventurous night at Manchester Academy 3. 12

03.04.20

Caribou

O2 Victoria Warehouse £22.50ADV | 7pm

After what has felt like a lifetime on the sidelines, Caribou is back with a new album full of tunes that’ll soundtrack your summer. It’s been five long years since his banger ‘Our Love’ made it into the Top 10 (not that we’ve been counting) and we reckon there’s a fair few tunes off the latest record, ‘Suddenly’, that’ll have you trotting around the dance floor without a care in the world. Namely, ‘Never Come Back’, ‘You and I’ and ‘Home’. It’ll be some Friday night down at the Victoria Warehouse in April.

hugely anticipated fourth album is released. Everything the 35-yearold Californian does is just making us want to go and see him at the Academy even more. And that was before we’d seen the video for his latest single, ‘Dragonball Durag’, where he dances for HAIM and tries to woo Kali Uchis before the latter calls the police. Think it’s safe to say it won’t just be another gig...

“We woke up with a sore head, but it still felt right.”

During the beginning, there was a lot of hard work and late nights as Anastasia recycled her material through the local pub circuit in Yorkshire.

Most brainwaves born in bars are exposed as frauds in the cold light of day.

“I started gigging when I was about 13/14, singing at almost any bar that would allow me indoors,” the frontwoman tells us.

But when the name ‘Bang Bang Romeo’ emerged through a haze of tequila as a potential moniker for Anastasia Walker and her bandmates, it felt like a winner.

“Growing up, I mainly did bar work – it’s the only job that allows you to be a musician. I was sacked from the mall for having so much time off. The pub was a place where I could sing for tips!”

The name survived the morning h a n g o v e r, and soon it would be slapped on arenas like Hampton Park, Anfield and Wembley Stadium.

After Anastasia met guitarist Ross and drummer Richard, the trio began to walk the path to that tequila bar where Bang Bang Romeo was conceived.

Today, Bang Bang Romeo are blasting their coined brand of powerhouse pop-rock to more listeners than ever – showering sold-out crowds with a deafening confetti cannon of uplifting, important messages about embracing identity. But none of this happened overnight. And it certainly wasn’t an accident.

“I haven’t ever given myself a Plan B,” Anastasia admits. “A lot of people would say that was foolish. But if I gave myself a Plan B, there’s room to fail.” 16

“I was in college for a bit doing art and design because that’s what you’re supposed to do. I told my dad: ‘This isn’t me’. He was like: ‘Quit – you’re born for it, so go and do it.’”

but she picked us, and it was the best experience of our lives.”

“That was that. There was never another option for me but singing.”

Perhaps Pink saw a little of herself in Anastasia – a woman with a strong stage presence, a message to match the decibels, and a striking personality.

“We’ll never be able to thank Pink and her team enough for that.”

As momentum behind the band increased, things abruptly shifted into fifth gear when they were picked out by superstar Pink to support her at Wembley. Looking back on the series of shows that changed their lives, Anastasia is still giddy.

“It’s every band’s dream to play Wembley Stadium, init?!”

“(I want to) totally carve my own path,” says Anastasia. “I’m a gay woman and growing up in Doncaster there wasn’t really anyone to look up to in that sort of way.”

“Ooh, ‘ey, that were “Powerful people Anastasia Walker good!” she laughs, are inspiring to her thick Donny me. But in terms accent rising to of following the fore. “It’s every band’s dream someone’s footsteps… I’m to play Wembley Stadium, init?!” not really that sort of chick. I’m just my own person.” “Pink’s agent turned up at a showcase we were doing in “Singing in front of people… it London, and later we got a phone sounds weird but it’s quite relaxing call saying she’d thrown our hat for me. I love the butterflies. I’m into the ring to support her.” a total adrenaline junkie. The second I come off stage I’m “We thought ‘that’s hilarious’, dying to get back on it again.” 19

Anastasia’s buzz for the soapbox is reminiscent of a movie star – and it’s true that film has played a key role in moulding Bang Bang Romeo’s music.

Bang Bang Romeo are a big unprickable balloon of positivity with something to say. But they’re not all talk. When their fans need them, they’re there.

A strong soundtrack influence seeps through their debut LP, ‘A Heartbreaker’s Guide To The Galaxy’, evoking compositions found in Tarantino, Burton and Bond flicks.

The group’s hometown of Doncaster succumbed to torrential flooding last year, and they rushed to arrange a benefit gig.

“The album is a rollercoaster of emotions and a journey to a different planet altogether,” the singer explains.

“The new album will be the next chapter of who we are”

“It was devastating to see (the floods),” Anastasia sighs.

“It’s not our style to sit back and not do anything, so we asked ourselves: What could we do? To make a proper Anastasia Walker difference we “It was recorded knew we needed all over the place – we were to make a shit-tonne of money.” moving around when we wrote it and wanted it to transport “Within four days we planned listeners to somewhere else.” a benefit concert. We got BBC Look North there, Doncaster FC “We’re doing more writing now and rugby club came down, and and the new album will be the Example and Kasabian gave us next chapter of who we are.” tickets which we raffled off. We managed to raise around 8k … and “There’s lots of stuff about female I think it was free entry as well!” empowerment in there. I’d like to say this one’s for the girls – definitely “That’s what we’re all about one to scream and dance to in the up here. We come together room with your best friend, I think.” in’t north don’t we?!” 20

That’s for sure – and Manchester will welcome Bang Bang Romeo to the city with open arms when they arrive for their gig in April.

“I LOVE Manchester,” Anastasia tells us emphatically. “We always wanted to sell out Deaf Institute and last year we did it!” “We’ve gigged in Manchester quite a bit and it was one of the loudest places on the last tour.” But the stop off at Gorilla is only one item on an increasingly noisy agenda for Bang Bang Romeo, who have a mega 2020 lined up.

“I’d like some sleep… but there are no plans to slow down!” Anastasia chuckles. “We’ll be playing massive festivals and hitting new territories, so people can expect twice as much of everything! The new tour is the first time we’re playing the album in full, with tracks we’ve never played live before.” “It’s

gonna

be

sweaty.”

European Festival Guide 2020 Don’t know about you, but we’ve had just about enough of this wind, rain and even that little bit of snow. We all need something to look forward to. And we can’t think of anything better than escaping this island we call home and heading off to the continent to enjoy some of the best live music on the planet. That’s right, festival season is almost here and what better way to take advantage of it than by combining it with a trip abroad. We’ve rounded up the top 10 festivals in Europe - all you need to do is have a read, pick your favourite and get packing.

FIB Benicàssim 16-19/7/20 Spain 2h 20m flight FRM £62

If you’re into your indie and you don’t mind listening to it live in the sunshine, why’ve you never been to Benicàssim? If you’ve been before, why aren’t you going again? If you are going again, stop reading and get excited about a line-up that includes Foals, Liam Gallagher, Vampire Weekend and Two Door Cinema Club. It’s not all indie though. There’s a fair chunk of dance to get stuck into as well from the likes of Steve Aoki and Armin van Buuren. To be beside the seaside has never sounded so good. 26

We Love Green

6-7/6/20 France 1h 30m flight FRM £96

The name is a bit of a giveaway; We Love Green is a festival that’s committed to the environment as much as it’s committed to top live music. There’s a program packed with activities that aim to raise awareness, from discussions on eco-friendliness to workshops around sustainable living. And to add to the green vibe, the festival is held in the middle of the woods. Let’s not forget the acts. Lana Del Rey is headlining along with Disclosure, King Gizzard and loads more.

Melt Festival 17-19/7/20 Germany 3h 30m flight FRM £121

Does a festival within the grounds of a museum that houses mid-20th-century industrial machinery sound like a bit of you? Melt it is then. It’s been called, “the city of iron” and it’s easy to see why. But it’s about more than it’s bizarre location. Over the years some huge acts like Portishead, Aphex Twin, Tame Impala and even Kylie Minogue have put in memorable performances there. This July you can look forward to the likes of FKA Twigs, Bicep and Michael Kiwanuka. Oh, there’s also a ‘Sleepless Floor’, which literally doesn’t stop partying from Thursday to Monday. 27

Best Kept Secret 12-14/6/20 The Netherlands 1h 25m flight FRM £146

Every year we reckon that Best Kept Secret can’t be better than the last. But, they’ve outdone themselves again. Yet another stellar bill includes Massive Attack, The Strokes, The National, Metronomy, Badbadnotgood and Khruangbin. We could literally just keep reeling off these titanic names but I’d probably lose my job. And, we also wouldn’t have any space left to tell you about the festival’s beautiful set up in the scenic Safaripark Beeske Bergen in Hilvarenbeek. It’s made up of lush green fields, a beautiful lake, a playground, and it’s all soundtracked by incredible live music.

28

Sziget Festival 5-11/8/20 Hungary 2h 40m flight FRM £175

It’s a festival, a carnival, a theme park and it’s literally on its own island. You might not be able to pronounce Sziget (we can’t anyway), but you’ve probably heard of it. Celebrating its 28th anniversary, the Hungarian superfestival is one of the biggest in Europe and this year is another stormer. The headliners offer something for everyone. There’s Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa, Kings of Leon, A$AP Rocky, The Strokes and Stormzy to name a few. And if the music isn’t enough for you, head to one of the circus shows, the theatre or just wander down to the beach on the Danube.

NOS Primavera Sound 11-13/6/20 Portugal 2h 40m flight FRM £104

If Primavera Sound in Barcelona is the big guy on campus, NOS Primavera Sound in Porto is the laid back, chilled out and better-looking younger sibling. You get the best of the mega Primavera line-up in a more intimate setting - Portugal’s largest urban park, the stunningly green, Parque da Cidade. To pick highlights from the amazing bill is tough but we’ll go with Tyler, the Creator, King Krule, Little Simz and Maggie Rogers. Porto itself is beautiful by the way. Go on, you might as well make a city break out of it.

Ronquières Festival 1-2/8/20 Belgium 1h 25m flight FRM £61

Maybe the most eclectic festival on our list, Ronquières is a two-day festival by the side of a canal in a little village in Belgium. It’s another one in a unique location, beneath a control tower in a sloping lock. It all helps to create a blissful and refreshing space for you to enjoy some of the best Belgian, Francophone and international artists around. Snow Patrol are headlining the Sunday night with plenty more acts to be announced before the August sunshine hits Belgium.

Fest Festival 13-15/8/20 Poland 2h 30m flight FRM £84

Debuting just last year, we’re made up that Fest is back. We’ve been promised another varied line-up from across the musical spectrum, more cool stage designs and all within the colourful Park Śląski. First time out, the bill included Disclosure, Jaden Smith and Little Dragon and with James Bay already announced this time around, we can’t wait to hear what else the organisers have got up their sleeves. You’ll never be stuck for stuff to keep you entertained either. For the whole weekend, the festival runs non-stop, 24-hours a day. 30

Electric Picnic 4-6/9/20 Ireland 1h flight FRM £223

Good things come to those who wait. Maybe that’s why Ireland’s favourite festival falls right at the end of the season. The first headliners have only recently been revealed; Rage Against the Machine are coming together for the first time since 2011 to play the Friday night. If that announcement is anything to go by, we’re pretty confident the rest of the bill will once again be a who’s who of huge alternative and leftfield acts from across the globe. Dubbed the Glastonbury of the Emerald Isle, there’s loads to keep you busy, including a 24-hour cinema, a ‘Body and Soul’ arena and silent discos galore. loads to keep you busy, including a 24-hour cinema, a ‘Body and Soul’ arena and silent discos galore.

Hideout Festival 21-26/6/20 Croatia 4h 15m flight FRM £149

It’s been 10 years of boogying in the Adriatic sea and Hideout Festival is in the mood to party hard to celebrate the big birthday. You, your mates and all the top tier house, techno, grime, garage and drum and bass acts will descend on Zrce beach in June to get a good old two-step on. There are a bunch of onsite clubs for you to get stuck into but the best bit about Hideout is when it sets sail. The boat parties are legendary and the beach rave isn’t bad either. So far we’ve got Andy C, Jamie Jones, Patrick Topping, Mall Grab, Shy FX, Skream and more. Phew. 31
