Neighbourhood Weekender to return in 2020.

After its second successful year at Victoria Park in Warrington, the organisers of the Bank Holiday bonanza have announced that it will return in 2020 on 23-24 May. Discounted pre-sale tickets for next year’s event went on-sale on 31 May and have already sold-out. General and VIP tickets are expected to go on sale soon. For ticket alerts, sign up to the NBHD mailing list at: Nbhdweekender.com

Noel Gallagher performs at Heaton Park homecoming show.

Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds delivered a stellar set to 25,000 ‘mad for it’ Mancunians. The show was his biggest outdoor set of 2019 and his first at Heaton Park since Oasis’ performed there a decade ago, shortly before the band split. His set included his new (soon-to-be-hit) single ‘Black Star Dancing’. He also delighted the rain-drenched crowd with ‘She Taught Me How to Fly’, ‘It’s a Beautiful World’ and classic Oasis hits ‘Wonderwall’, ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’, ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’.

Fopp reopens !

The beloved music retailer sadly closed its doors on Brown Street on 5 February when Canadian retailer Sunrise Records bought out the struggling HMV chain, who also owned Fopp. To the surprise of musos across the city Fopp reopened on Sunday 27 May after the new owners managed to secure a new lease on its former premises. Fopp-tastic!

Patience

YES | £8ADV | 7:30pm

- of the -

You might remember vocalist Roxanne Clifford from the 00s indie pop band, Veronica Falls. Now performing under the alias ‘Patience’, she’s shaken off the indie vibes of her former years, mainlining a sweetened melodic nous over impeccable synth-pop production. Her main influences come from an endless list of iconic Italian female disco divas like Vivien Vee, Valerie Dore and Clio, Jessica Blue. Check her out at YES this month for some new age fun.

Our pick of the best shows this month 22.06.19

Hackney Colliery Band Gorilla | £18ADV | 7pm

If funky brass beats and eclectic covers are your thing, then Hackney Colliery Band is just the ticket. They’re a contemporary nine-piece collective hailing from East London, truly changing perceptions of brass music with original songs and covers of songs like ‘Africa’ and ‘No Diggity’. In 2012 they played the closing ceremony of the Olympics and have since performed at high profile award ceremonies including the Brits. Clever, sometimes political and enormously fun this group will guarantee a good Saturday night. 10

a truly special artist; it’s one thing emulating your heroes but to get support from them is something else. That aside, her music is incredibly unique with most of it recorded on vintage equipment for that true retro nostalgic feel.

27.06.19

The Burning Hell

Deaf Institute | £11ADV | 7pm

It’s always nice when a band doesn’t take themselves too seriously, and that’s exactly what you get with ‘The Burning Hell’. They’re a comedic literary threesome born from the brains of Mathias Kom. Originally from Canada, they’ve been on the road since 2007 and have played everywhere from a hectic Glastonbury to a lonely Arctic Circle. Upbeat, hooky with some pretty dark banter, they’ll be sure to keep you entertained at the Deaf Institute. 02.07.19

Mattiel

Gorilla l £15ADV | 7pm

Expect an inimitable garage blues sound with a touch of country from Atlanta based songstress, Mattiel. Her earlier music resembled that of the White Stripes after she spent her teenage years learning their songs on guitar, and early last year she got the seal of approval from Jack White himself. Clearly

and soul to Castlefield Bowl as part of the Manchester International Festival this summer. 11.07.19

Joan As Police Woman RNCM | £22.50ADV | 7pm

In the past Joan Wasser and her four-piece band have been described as an underrated ‘New York cult act’, but they are certainly past that now – recently hitting peak groove heights. The project expertly blends inspirations from soul legends such as Al Green and Nina Simone, with sounds from experimental bands like Sonic Youth. Wasser herself manages to encapsulate a rare blend of suavity and vulnerability. Her sound will be perfectly executed against RNCM’s impressive acoustics.

04.07.19

Janelle Monáe

Castlefield Bowl l £35ADV | 6pm

She’s been on the music scene since 2003, but it’s her positive girl power vibes in recent years that have really positioned her as part of music’s elite. Throughout her career, Monáe has received eight Grammy nominations, and an MTV Video Music Award. Certainly no one trick pony, Boston City Council named October 16 ‘Janelle Monáe Day’; in recognition of her music and activism. Monáe has also found fame on screen in hit films ‘Hidden Figures’ and ‘Moonlight’. She’ll be bringing her sass, strength

GHUM

Castle Hotel | £6ADV | 7:30pm

Post punk grunge group, GHUM, are the all-female band who formed through their mutual love of The Cure, Warpaint and PJ Harvey. The Cat gigs. Named after an actual cat that used to tour with them, they formed in 1998 in Boston, swiftly moving to Amsterdam to meet other like-minded creatives. major music accolades, millions of Spotify streams and a video starring Will Smith, they’re a very different band to the four-piece that formed way back in 2010.

The Bastille bassist had a show in Berlin last night and has another in Porto tomorrow, but he doesn’t sound like a band member deep in the throes of a relentless European tour. He’s Sundaymorning chilled for his interview with The Live Guide.

The latest chapter of The Bastille Story is less blurry and chaotic than everything that’s come before it. There have been more sessions in the studio than out on the town. The dingy basement “We didn’t have where they a late one last recorded their first night,” Will explains. two albums has “We’ve been doing been swapped this for nearly for bright, swish Will Farquarson a decade now. surroundings. “We’ve been doing this for nearly a decade now.”

“I liked ‘Pompeii’ when we made it, but I had no idea it would be the three minutes of music that transformed my life.”

apocalyptic party,” Will reveals. “The narrative running through it is all about imagining yourself at a house party during the end of the world.“

“I think there’s something really ineffable about the way people connect with music. ‘Pompeii’ was something like our fifth or sixth single, and it just took off – surpassing everyone’s expectations.”

“We wanted it to sound quite dancey, with a massive nod to the nineties, and it’s definitely a departure from the last album which was much more guitar-heavy.”

“You don’t really know what’s going to be a hit, but there are songs you particularly like when you’ve finished them.”

“This is our first attempt at a concept album.”

“We’ve created a lot of songs in the back of tour buses and basements before, but ‘Doom Days’ was made at our new Bastille HQ in London.”

“It’s a place where Will Farquarson “For instance, my we can all get favourite song together and hang of ours is ‘World out, with multiple Gone Mad’. It got featured on rooms for recording different the film ‘Bright’, too – which parts of each song.” meant we got to meet Will Smith, which was very cool.” “For the first time ever, we took six months off touring and spent all our Bastille’s third LP, ‘Doom Days’, time in the studio. With everything is officially released on June recorded in one go in one place, 14th – and it’s an ambitious the result is much more focused.” effort that puts a fresh spin on their radio-friendly sound. Bastille’s music has long been the subject of genre debate, and ‘Doom “This is our first attempt at a Days’ ought to throw another concept album. The idea is an cat amongst the pigeonholers. 17

“It’s quite illuminating seeing how different cultures react to your music,” says Will. “In America, we’re seen as a bit of an alternative rock band, whereas in some parts of Europe we’re mainstream pop. The difference between genres can be a matter of perception, I think.”

CTS TO Catch If you’re after some inspiration and want to catch the artists everyone is buzzing about, you’re in the right place. From the new kids on the block to some incredible comebacks, our handy list has you and your festival hitlist covered.

Nova Twins: UK: Download Festival // Boomtown Fair Europe: Nova Rock Festival (Austria) // Hellfest (France) // Rock In Évreux (France) // Rock For People (Czech Republic) // Fjellparken (Norway) You might be scratching your head as you look at the two UK festivals that Nova Twins are heading to this summer. One rock, one electronic. Well, that’s the perfect summary. Georgia South and Amy Love are two Londoners who merge monster basslines with rap, grime and punk. Their sound is scarily entertaining and refreshingly authentic and the twins deserve a big fat tick on your clashfinder. 26

Fuzzy Sun: UK: Community Festival // Sounds Of The City // Above Festival Stockport’s Fuzzy Sun have only been together for just over a year, but it’s been a 12 months to remember. Their SK brothers Blossoms have not only taken the five-piece on tour with them, they’ve even signed them up to their label, Very Clever Records. Add to that a ‘Best Breakthrough Act’ gong at the CityLife Awards and a bunch of releases that are packed with warm melodies and bags of energy. Don’t miss them in Manchester supporting The Wombats at Sounds of The City.

Bastille: UK: Isle of Wight Festival // Glastonbury Festival // TRNSMT Festival // Citadel Festival // Reading & Leeds Festival Europe: Werchter Festival (Belgium) // Fabrique (Italy) // Cruilla Barcelona (Spain) // Stavernfestivalen (Norway) // Malakoff Rockfestival (Norway) // Weekend Helsinki (Finland) // Low Festival (Spain) // Indiependence (Ireland) // Untold Festival (Romania) // Stars in Town (Switzerland) // Heitere Open Air (Switzerland) // Strand Festival (Hungary) Our cover stars Bastille set to take their new album on the festival circuit this summer. ‘Dooms Day’ is the first new work for 3 years from the indie pop four-piece and they’ve been picked to play some biggies across the globe before embarking on a tour of their own. 27

Lewis Capaldi: UK: Tramlines // Bestival // Truck Festival // Standon Calling // Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival //Boardmasters Festival // Summer Sessions // The Big Feastival // Victorious Festival Europe: Overoslo (Norway) // Rock Werchter (Belgium) // Montreux Jazz Lab (Switzerland) // Down The Rabbit Hole (Netherlands) // G! Festival (Faroe Islands) // Colours Of Ostrava (Czech Republic) // Szene Open Air Festival (Austria) // Indiependence (Ireland) // City Park Open Air (Germany) // Stars in Town (Switzerland) If you’ve not heard of Lewis Capaldi, it’s time to take your head out of the sand. The Scottish singer’s debut album went straight to number 1 and now he’s been announced to perform at Glastonbury. Away from the music, he’s known for his hilarious social media stories, from showing off his tracksuits to getting naked on a New York balcony. Oh, he spent a day serving sausage rolls at Greggs too. Luckily for us, he’s taking his tunes and his sense of humour all over Europe this summer. 28

Lizzo: UK: Glastonbury // Lovebox Europe: Rock Werchter (Belgium) // Main Square Festival (France) // Roskilde Festival (Denmark) // Afropunk Festival (France) Singer, rapper and flutist, Lizzo is set to take the biggest festivals in Europe by storm with her super catchy, self-esteem boosting and genreswerving pop. If you’re not yet in the summer mood, whack on her smash hit ‘Juice’, dive into the nearest paddling pool and make sure you don your sunnies (or wellies) down at the front of one of her shows.

Bombay Bicycle Club: UK: Wilderness Festival Europe: All Together Now (Ireland) Bombay Bicycle Club are returning for their first UK and Ireland appearances in four years, bringing an end to a break which has felt like an age. The news of a comeback gets even better with the promise of new material too. In the meantime, we’ll enjoy singing along to those indie hits from the 00s that we know and love.

Cassia: UK: Winchestival // Barn on the Farm // TRNSMT Festival // Tramlines Festival // Y Not? Festival // Kendal Calling // Truck Festival // Boardmasters Europe: Rocken Am Brocken (Germany) // Sound of the Forest (Germany) // Weinturm Open Air (Germany) // Obstwiesenfestival (Germany) Forming just down the road in Macclesfield, Cassia are a perfect festival toe-tapper. The summery guitar band released their debut album ‘Replica’ this year and it’s packed full of songs that you won’t be able to get out of your head. They’re performing in Germany and the UK so get down and support the local trio. 30

Kraftwerk: UK: Bluedot Festival (UK exclusive) Europe: Tauron Nowa Muzyka Katowice (Poland) // Metronome Festival (Czech Republic) // Arena Open Air (Germany) // Festival Jardins de Pedralbes (Spain) // EDP Cool Jazz (Portugal) Has there been a more innovative and influential electro band than Kraftwerk? Answers on a postcard please. The German electronic legends are touring their immersive and awe-inspiring 3D show this summer and they’re only UK performance is down the road at Bluedot. Beneath the stunning Jodrell Bank observatory, this promises to be a state-of-the-art show that’ll go down in history.

Vampire Weekend: UK: Glastonbury Europe: Open’er Festival (Poland) // Down The Rabbit Hole (Netherlands) // Roskilde Festival (Denmark) // Mad Cool Festival (Spain) // NOS Alive (Portugal) Another to file in the long-awaited comeback category, it’s indie kings Vampire Weekend. Fresh from the release of their first album in 6 years, the four-piece are now back on the road. If you’re not one of the lucky ones going to Glastonbury to belt out ‘A-Punk’, don’t shed a tear, the New Yorkers are performing here in Manchester in November. 31

Queen Zee: UK: Download Festival // Glastonbury // Reading & Leeds Festival It doesn’t get more engaging and eye-catching than a Queen Zee live show. Hailing from Birkenhead, the five-piece treat fans to riotous, colourful and glamorous performances. Perfect festival tackle. If you can’t wait for that dose of live powerful punk, their self-titled debut is out now and is guaranteed to whet your appetite.

The Slow Readers Club: UK: Splendour Festival // Deer Shed Festival Europe: Rock Werchter (Belgium) // Metropolis Festival (Netherlands) // Mad Cool Festival (Spain) // Electric Castle Festival (Romania) // Taubertal Festival (Germany) A top 20 album and selling out the Apollo isn’t bad for a band that only quit their day jobs last year. They might be Slow Readers, but these Mancunians are growing rapidly. Bask in their post-punk glory this summer; you won’t regret it.

The 1975: UK: Reading & Leeds Festival // Summer Sessions Europe: Piknik i Parken (Norway)
