month
Canadian-American saxophonist, multi-reedist, and composer, Colin Stetson, is hot property at the minute. He’s best known as a regular collaborator of indierock acts including Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and The Chemical Brothers, but has recently taken to composing scores for big movies like ‘Hereditary’ and ‘Arrival’. He has an utterly unique sound, principally on his saxophones and clarinets, which is rich with emotional and polyphonic compositions. Catch this impressive soloist doing his thing at Gorilla!

Rickie Lee Jones
RNCM | £30ADV | 7pm
Rickie Lee Jones’ career spans a whopping five decades and she is somewhat of a musical legend. Her new music is still living up to her impressive standard with her latest album, ‘Kicks’, achieving widespread critical acclaim. At the tender age of 24, she was crowned “the Dutchess of Coolsville” by Rolling Stone after launching her big single ‘Chuck E’s In Love’. Over the course of her illustrious musical journey, she has joined forces with the likes of Randy Newman, Donald Eagen and Michael McDonald. Go see this queen deliver her magic 10

Kiesza
Gorilla | £17.50ADV | 7pm
Kiesza had a rather unusual start to her music career – as part of the Royal Canadian Navy. It was during singalongs with her fellow crew members that she taught herself to play the guitar, which sparked her interest in music. She launched her first single ‘Oops’ back in 2012, but three years later had to put her music on hold after being in a nearfatal car accident. Two years into recovery she is back with full force despite still dealing with ailments from the incident. Go check her out at Gorilla, where she will be playing her new single ‘All For You’, as well as classics like ‘Hideaway’.
tour. The two acts worked together on Deerhunter’s latest album ‘Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?’. On the scene since 2001, Deerhunter’s sound has been influenced by the likes of Stereolab, Sonic Youth and The Breeders, and they remain as experimental today as they were when they first started out. While Le Bon first gained attention back in 2007 when she supported fellow Welsh native, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals. Since then, she has released five solo albums, three EPs and a number of singles. You’ll be in for a treat watching this dream team at the Ritz.

Sampa the Great
YES | £12.50ADV | 7:30pm
Zambian singer-songwriter and rapper, Sampa the Great, is bringing her hip-hop beats to YES. First finding fame in 2015 by being featured on the single ‘Beauty’ by future soul singer-songwriter, Wallace she has been taking Australian audiences by storm. She only returned to her roots earlier this year when playing her first show in Zambia – her most challenging audience to date with lots of pressure to impress. With that show under her belt, performing her new album to Mancunians will be a walk in the park. ‘The Return’ looks into themes of home heritage, displacement and freedom, against an encapsulating afrobeat, R&B and neo-soul background.
12.11.19
Imogen Heap Bridgewater Hall FRM£20 | 7pm
Where to start with Imogen Heap! For most, this classical singer and musician first caught their attention when her song ‘Hide and Seek’ was played on the OC back in 2005. The scene with Heap’s music has since been crowned as the best music moment on the show – no mean feat considering the likes of Jeff Buckley, Placebo and Sufjan Stevens also made it onto the soundtrack. Writing music since she was 13, she has released four studio albums and artists such as Taylor Swift and Jason Derulo have sampled her tracks

The Joy Formidable
The Bread Shed | £20ADV | 7pm
Hailing from Mold in Wales The Joy Formidable are made up of alt-rockers Rhiannon “Ritzy” Bryan, Rhydian Dafydd and Matthew James Thomas. Childhood friends and then couple Bryan and bassist Dafydd originally played together in Manchester band, Tricky Nixon, which later reformed as Sidecar Kisses. After the latter band split up in 2007, they regrouped to form The Joy Formidable back in their hometown. Since then the threesome has launched five albums and are now on tour with new material. poll this year – an honour she still quite can’t get her head around.
The Live Guide has been listening to a lot of Grace Carter recently – and the singer thinks she knows what our reaction to her music might have been.
“Back in the day I saw artists I absolutely adored on that list,” explains Grace – whose bubbly, joyful waking life persona is a far cry from the tortured poet her music suggests.
She’s right, too.
“How did I end up in Japan with all these people singing my songs?”

It’s impossible not to get a little weepy when you listen. “On tour, I’ve had a few moments where I actually realise how far Grace makes music that demands things have come. Like when I was in attention – and she’s getting it. The Asia earlier this year I thought: ‘How twenty-two-year-old has spent did I end up in Japan with all these 2019 performing over the world people singing my songs?! me. It’s the way I process emotion.” With every note she hits, Grace wears her heart on her sleeve – a practice that’s draining and liberating all-at-once.
Her earnest approach is part of the reason Grace has struck a chord with music fans across the planet. But what also separates her music from other tearjerkers isn’t just its sincerity, but its subject.
“I’m very happy that I share. But of course, I do get exhausted,” the singer admits.
When Grace asks “Why Her, Not Me” on her eponymous EP, she isn’t talking to an old flame. The ‘one that got away’ is her father. He’d chosen another family.
“My mum raised me as a single parent – she’s my favourite person in the world and did so much for me,” Grace tells us.
“Sometimes, when I’m on stage I might cry a bit, because there’s a lot of emotion there. It is hard, but it’s also very empowering.”
“I started making music to process all the things I’d felt as a child”
“My songs are about my own experiences, but they’re also about the triggers that “I was in my teens happen when when mum met my you go through Grace Carter stepdad. “Adele and Alicia Keys were the ones I was drawn to – that was the stuff my mum would listen to at the time. I also really love John Legend.”
“I’m really looking forward to being back on tour. Hopefully, I’ll sell out arenas at some point. But more than anything, I want to drop an amazing album that people connect with.”
“I’ve toured with some amazing artists, too, which has been very cool: Dua Lipa, Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, HAIM, Mabel. They’ve been really important in my development. In this world, I’m constantly learning on-the-job, so it’s really special to have people there helping me along the way.”
And how will that sound? We can’t say, just yet. The singer is keeping the cards close to her chest on this one. “You’ll have to wait and see!” Grace quips, her voice rising an octave.
“I’ve shared so much of my childhood already, so I wanted to go back to the studio and establish how I felt as a twenty-two-year-old. This music is going to be about where I’m at in my life right now.”
“I started off as a support act, and suddenly it got crazy when it became my show and my tour. I was like: “Ohh! These people are actually here to see me!” Indeed, there’ll be thousands coming to watch Grace in the coming weeks. She’s tag-teaming with fellow heartstring-puller Lewis Capaldi on her upcoming tour – and it’s a good bet there won’t be a single dry eye in the Academy on 23 November.
“It’s kind of like a step on – I’m growing up. But I don’t want to give away too much. There’s stuff coming in the next few weeks, that’s all I’ll say.” Grace Lewis 23rd at

02.11.19 | Mayfield Depot £28.50 | 3pm – 2am
Heeeeeere’s Annie. Okay, so Annie Mac isn’t anywhere near as terrifying as Jack Nicholson in The Shining, but the line-up she’s curated for The Warehouse Project is frighteningly good. Get your techno fix from the likes of Denis Sulta and Mella Dee, eclectic electronic from Nightmares on Wax, a dollop of groove from Folamour or venture across the globe with O’Flynn. 20

Top 10 Acts to Catch at Off The Record 2019 Live music festival and conference Off The Record returns stronger and more exciting than ever this November 14th-15th, and for music lovers it’s the local event of the year. A perfect mix of trusted music industry experts, such as Joy Division and New Order manager Rebecca Boulton, and emerging unsigned talent merges to create unmissable discussion panels and the freshest performances from every corner of every genre. Indie trailblazers Sundara Karma and Fickle Friends will be around, and we’ve put together the top 10 acts worth a watch.
30
Abbie Ozard
Manchester-based Abbie Ozard brings with her a dreamlike vibe and heart-breaking lyrics, creating a name for herself wherever she goes. This female powerhouse really is one to watch and Off The Record is where you can hear her most recent single ‘Heartbreak Radio’ live and in concert.
Secluded Sea
This nostalgic duo takes dreampop to the next level, blending cinematic sounds with an array of genre influences to create something truly unique. Having met at Manchester’s Deaf Institute at a show put on by half of the duo, Angela Hazeldine, the two have worked tirelessly to establish their sound, and it’s not a sound you want to miss.
Dirty Laces
Veterans of festival life, having performed at the likes of Liverpool Sound City, Kendal Calling and Manchester’s own Neighbourhood, Dirty Laces return to their hometown with a bang. Their live power and contemporary edge takes 60s and 70s pop influences to an unprecedented level and definitely makes Dirty Laces one to watch both at Off The Record and in the future.
Nina Cobham
Inspired by Manchester’s sense of inclusion, 17-year-old Nina Cobham brings an extremely youthful feel to this year’s Off The Record. Praised by Children of Zeus and boasting a soulful bilingual sound she creates something very special that we don’t see often enough.
31
HMD
Somalian born HMD draws from an array of influences to establish his own hip-hop, R&B sound. Born into a clan renowned for its poets, storytelling is in his blood. HMD moved from Somalia to Manchester via Denmark, where he went to school, learnt to play the drums and made his first steps into music. At OTR he is set to infiltrate the industry with a very rare mix of influences that you won’t hear anywhere else.
The C33s
North West trio C33s boast a wide range of genre influences which they incorporate into their alternative punk-rock sound, including elements of surf, garage and even tribal styles. Having released their debut EP in 2018, and debuting live soon after at indie-rock favourite Jimmy’s, its seems almost impossible for them to have produced the kind of nostalgic 70s sound that they have – you’ll only know if you see it live!
Ellysse Mason
Moving from folk roots into atmospheric electronica, Ellysse Mason has been compared to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Billie Eilish and Massive Attack, showcasing an otherworldly, almost haunting sound. Having racked up a whopping 1.5 million streams of debut EP ‘Hunt Me Down’ and sold-out shows at Manchester’s Deaf Institute and Academy 3, this in-demand artist is worth ticking off the list while you can!
32
Bethlehem Casuals Seven-piece DIY ensemble Bethlehem Casuals bring a fresh, lively sound to the scene, with an eclectic mix of Welsh folk cello, jazz klezmer sax and Bulgarian percussion. The so-called ‘groove gremlins’ are no strangers to the festival scene, having played a litany of festivals including Glastonbury, and they also have even curated their own biannual festival ‘Keep It Casual Fest’! If there’s one act you must see, make it this bunch of groovers!
Nile Marr
Namely touring the world with renowned musician and cinematic composer Hans Zimmer, Nile Marr has accomplished a fair amount for a spritely 27-year-old musician. An advocate for getting his audience to leave their house, Marr seems to emit respect for music lovers and listeners and has a true love for the industry, as well as making acclaimed, wonderful guitar pop coupled with unrivalled song-writing.
Grimm Twins
Forming around twins Harry and Joe Ward, Grimm Twins have come a long way from playing at Manchester School of Art to raise money for a degree show. The band have since opened for the like of Tim Burgess (of Charlatans fame) and modern political punkrockers Cabbage. Meanwhile, their debut single ‘I Don’t Care’ is making waves with airtime on Steve Lamacq’s 6Music show and Radio X’s ‘X-POSURE Big One’ by John Kennedy.
