The legendary rockers paid homage to the city’s musical heritage with a cover of The Stone Roses’ ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ during their sold-out show at the Etihad Stadium in June. Further showing their love and support to the city, Metallica donated a whopping 40k to Manchester homeless charity Coffee4Craig. The charity has said the donation is enough to fund their work for the next 12 months. Metallica met with charity workers to hand over a novelty cheque with a thank you message to all the fans attending their show.

He takes his seat on the train from King’s Cross and orders a bottle of water from the trolley, eagerly reminiscing and surmising in equal measure as we probe about his music career – pausing for breath only when the conductor releases a long garbled message over the loudspeaker. At “the ripe old age of 63”, as he puts it, Peter’s hedonistic days might be over, but he’s still got the touring energy of a twenty-one-yearold. “The biggest frustration I had when I was in New Order was that they hardly ever played,” he puffs with exasperation.

Flying the flag for Greater Manchester were those lovely lads from Stockport. Another performance to remember from Blossoms.

4

You’d have thought the rain would’ve stopped the party, but the puddles became the dancefloor for DJ Koze.

7 JPEGMAFIA brought the chaos and took a poke at local Marmite-man Morrissey. Controversial.

9

Pusha T crowned rap as this year’s festival winner, turning the whole tent into a mosh pit with a mix of new and classic material.

3

It’s not every day a hip-hop king finds himself in Bury but Nas didn’t look or sound out of place as he dropped classic after classic.

Hypnotically laid back, Earl Sweatshirt effortlessly owned The Sounds of the Near Future tent with a dollop of sample rap.

5

Slowthai’s debut suggests there’s ‘Nothing Great About Britain’. Anyone who saw the rapper’s full-throttle, half-naked set will disagree.

6

More rain on Sunday was met by more partiers ignoring it. The day opens with a sublime smattering of alt-pop from Easy Life.

8

Christine and The Queens’ performance was so carefully choreographed it wouldn’t have been out of place at the Palace Theatre.

Mike Skinner paraded around stage proudly proclaiming that he, “brought the f***ing sunshine!” - he brought the tunes too!

august Bank Holiday Guide The last big bank holiday weekend of 2019 is almost upon us and we really don’t know where the time went.

Be prepared with our August Bank Holiday Guide - we’ve rounded up the best festivals, gigs, club nights and more. Draw a big old circle around your favourites and let’s make it one to remember! The lie-in can wait.

Moovin Festival

23-25.08.19 | Whitebottom Farm | £27.50 Line-up: 2manydjs, Big Daddy Kane, Soul II Soul + many more Don’t Miss: Fickle Friends

Get yourself Moovin on out of the city centre this Bank Holiday and you won’t be disappointed. Wander through a canopy of trees, beyond a stunning lake, past a beautiful gorge and you’ll be greeted by some of the best funk, soul, groove, hip-hop and reggae acts around. Alongside all the household headliners are some mega artists including Morcheeba, Lee Scratch Perry, Nightmares on Wax and Horse Meat Disco. What’s better, you can camp for the weekend so you don’t miss a minute of the party. 28

Hidden Courtyard

25.08.19 l Downtex Mill l FRM£8.50 Line-up: Move D, Martin LooseCuts, Anton Fitz + many more

Don’t Miss: Special Guest - Anton Fitz

The coolest club in town is celebrating its 4th birthday in the only way it knows how. By throwing two parties totalling a whopping 12 hours across two sessions. That’s a lot of toe-tapping. The award-winning venue will be opening up all four areas, including the outdoor courtyard. Expect a mix of house, techno, disco and everything in between with even more acts still to be announced.

Manchester Pride Live! 23-26.08.19 l Mayfield l FRM£34.50 Line-up: Ariana Grande, Years & Years, Bananarama + many more

Don’t Miss: Basement Jaxx (DJ Set)

Every August Bank Holiday, Manchester bursts into colour, life and feel-good-fun thanks to the vibrant Pride celebrations. And this year, the party is spreading even further across the city with the introduction of Manchester Pride Live at Mayfield Depot. Heading up the bill and back in her second home once again is none other than honorary Manc, Ariana Grande. There’s plenty more to enjoy over the weekend too, including Pixie Lott and DJ sets from Basement Jaxx and Faithless. 29

S.L.A.G+

25.08.19 l Stage & Radio l FRM£4

Line-up: Mixing Mates, Pheromone and Jungle Julia Don’t Miss: Pheromone

As we’ve already mentioned, Manchester on the late Bank Holiday is all about Pride. Mixing Mates have done exactly what they say on the tin and mixed with their mate’s, Pheromones, to bring you 14 hours of music, art and drag dancers in NQ hotspot Stage & Radio. Aptly named S.L.A.G+ (Straights, Lesbians, Gays, Plus), you’ll be grooving to everything from disco to house in the main bar and then you’re free to wander down to the basement for your techno fix from 9pm.

Sequential Records Summer Showcase 25.08.19 l Lock 91 l FRM£10.15

Line-up: Scott Steadman, Jay Cosgrove + more TBA Don’t Miss: Scott Steadman

Sequential Records have been making waves in the house scene both here and in the US since they set up in 2012. So, to celebrate, they’re making waves on the canal around Castlefield Docks and throwing a boat party. Unfortunately for you and me, that’s now sold-out. But, due to high demand, there’s now a sun terraced after-party on Deansgate. While some might be feeling a bit sea (canal) sick, you’ll be ready for a night of premium house. Label boss and producer Jay Cosgrove is behind the decks with more DJs to follow.

30

Play Saturday: Foam Party

25.08.19 l Liquid and Envy, Oldham l FRM£4.50 Line-up: Deejay Mo and M:Hand Don’t Miss: The drink offers

If you fancy throwing it back to your college days or to that Magaluf group holiday you took in 2012, then this is the night for you. Swimwear is allowed for one night only, so leave your best outfit at home, let your hair down and have some proper fun. No frills, just massive foam cannons. Resident DJs will be spinning all the house, hip-hop, R&B and grime that you love so you can slide* through the foam all night long. *Please slide tackle your mates responsibly.

Rhythm & Blues Festival 23-25.08.19 l Colne l FRM£99

Line-up: Geoff Achison, Danny Bryant, Anthony Gomes + many more Don’t Miss: The Achievers

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Rhythm & Blues Festival is a must for devotees and newbies to the genre. The cosy Lancashire town, Colne, comes to a complete standstill for a weekend of music, food, booze, busking and blues. Hosting some of the biggest names in Rhythm and Blues and the next big acts, each venue is within walking distance of the main street with capacities ranging from 50 to 750. Sounds like good old-fashioned Bank Holiday fun.

31

Creamfields

22-25.08.19 l Daresbury l FRM£65

Line-up: Swedish House Mafia, Calvin Harris, The Chemical Brothers (live) + many more Don’t Miss: Dusky

It’s the UK’s biggest dance festival and we’re lucky enough to have it just down the road from us. And when we say biggest, we mean bigger than what you thought was the biggest. Just look at the line-up; Deadmau5, Martin Garrix, Tiesto, Eric Prydz, Carl Cox. A who’s who of dance music royalty. What’s great too is that there are hundreds of underground artists and rising stars dotted around the festival just waiting to be discovered.

A Guy Called Gerald 25.08.19 l South l FRM£11.25

Line-up: A Guy Called Gerald (4 hour set). Don’t Miss: Any of his set

One of Manchester’s original underground artists is heading back to Manchester’s original underground spot. None other than Hacienda legend A Guy Called Gerald will be behind the wheels of steel in South for a special 4-hour-set on Bank Holiday Sunday. The co-founder of 808 State and dance music producer of some 30 years will be transforming the basement into a 90’s Madchester utopia with the very best in acid house, soulful house and minimal techno. Just wait until he drops ‘Voodoo Ray’... 32

North Fest

24.08.19 l The Millgate, Failsworth l £15ADV

Line-up: The Clone Roses, The Smiths Ltd, Clint Boon, Davos + many more Don’t Miss: Davos (old skool piano set)

If you want a dose of Manchester music at a reasonable price, then look no further than North Fest. Tributes to The Stone Roses and The Smiths with have you singing along merrily, or perhaps not during renditions of ‘Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now’. Inspiral Carpets’ Clint Boon will also be making an appearance and Davos will take you back to those warehouse parties, with an ever-changing medley of old skool house and rave classics live on a piano.

Leeds Festival

23-25.08.19 l Bramham Park, Leeds l FRM£74.50

Line-up: Foo Fighters, The 1975, Post Malone + many more Don’t Miss: Lion

Leeds Festival feels like a bit of a rite of passage. Most of us start there, get a taste of festival life and then end up catching the festival fever. If you’ve never been or just want another helping, this year’s 20th anniversary feels like the perfect excuse with an incredibly diverse line-up to wade in to. Yep, those headliners are huge. And keeping you entertained elsewhere are Mura Masa, AJ Tracey, Sundara Karma, Denis Sulta and loads more.
