Ariana Grande Bursts with Pride

Ariana Grande made an emotional first return to Manchester since the One Love Manchester concert. Headlining the LGBT+ Pride concert at Mayfield Depot during the bank holiday weekend Grande confessed she felt ‘overwhelmed’ to be back, as did her fans in attendance. Hits performed included ‘One Last Time’ and ‘No Tears Left To Cry’, making for a perfect Mancunian comeback.

Off The Record Returns in 2019

Multi-venue live music event and conference Off The Record will grace Manchester’s Northern Quarter for the fourth year running this November. Launched by a cohort of some of the North’s favourite festivals – Kendal Calling, Sound City and Bluedot – by day the event will host panels such as ‘Women In Music: Engineering a New Future’ and ‘How To Start & Run a Venue’, and by night will showcase the hottest new talent the UK has to offer. Tickets are available from £17.50 via Otrmcr.co.uk

GM Mayor’s Concert Triumph

In May, the Raise The Roof concert saw some of the best Mancunian artists around perform in pursuit of raising cash for Andy Burnham’s Bed Every Night charity, which is attempting to end rough sleeping in Manchester. It was recently announced that the event endorsed by the likes of Blossoms, Courteeners and legendary John Cooper Clarke has raised over £100k and plans are being drawn up to make the benefit concert an annual event! 9

“I stood there thinking: ‘What am I doing with my life?’”

“We were filming for ‘Plant The Seed’,” Aaron tells The Live Guide, chuckling at the memory before he’s even finished the sentence.

Every musician has a moment when they wonder if it’s all worth it. Overcoming an episode of self-doubt seems to be a great singer’s rite of passage. For Slow Readers Club frontman, Aaron Starkie, this happened one afternoon out by a stream.

“The idea for the video was quite artistic and all this coloured powder was being thrown around everywhere. But because we were near the river, the air was quite moist, so the powder just turned to mulch straight away.”

“You’ve just got to keep believing in yourself and the music you make”

“As I stood there It was 2015, and his with all this stuff band of born-andbeing thrown at bred Mancunians me, soaking wet, I were now a big didn’t have much draw on the local confidence things circuit. bands coming through from Scruff of the Neck records like Larkins, as well as the big ones like Courteeners and The 1975. It’s a good healthy scene right now and we’re proud to be part of it.”

“We slugged away for a long time, balancing day jobs, and it was our tour with James that did a lot to give us an audience around the country. People started to get involved with ‘Cavalcade’ (their second album) and word of mouth spread.”

‘Cavalcade’ proved to be a fitting name for The Slow Readers Club’s breakthrough record, prompting a parade of praise that paved the way for the band’s graduation from small-time gigs to big arenas like the Albert Hall and Apollo.

“The dream of being a full-time band kept us going”

From there, The Slow Readers Club became part of Manchester’s music makeup – Their third album, held in the same ‘Build A Tower’, regard as exciting busted the UK Top Aaron Starkie neighbours 20, and at the turn like Blossoms of 2019, they went and Cabbage full-time to tour the (look closely and you’ll spot world – playing in the Netherlands, Cabbage’s Stephen Evans in Belgium, Poland, Croatia and China. a Slow Readers Club video…). in the bigger world around them. “A lot of our lyrics are quite melancholy, personal and existential,” Aaron says. “But there’s also stuff in there about how the world affects your own psyche; the feelings of anxiety we get by not having control. We live in such an anxious age now. You can see on social media the division it’s caused.”

“Growing up, mine and my brother’s inspirations were Bowie, Beatles, Smiths, (Stone) Roses, Arcade Fire and Interpol. But David likes his Led Zeppelin and Jim likes Motown. We’ve all got our own influences and bring different things to the mix.” “We write our own bits and it comes together when we jam around. It’s a good collaborative process and it seems to be working well so far!

“We’re working on the next album right now”

“It’s good that more bands are addressing politics these days. It was deeply unfashionable for a while, but to not address that and just sing love songs is a bit… weird. It couldn’t go unmentioned, for me.”

“We’re working Aaron Starkie on the next album right now, actually. It’s more aggressive than our previous stuff both lyrically and melodically; Given the origins of their band a bit punkier and more guitar- name, The Slow Readers Club were led. There’ll be some gentler perhaps born to be a bit political. electronic tunes on there, too.” Before starting high school, Aaron remembers being taken on a tour Their intriguing sound has caught around the building and seeing the ears of international audiences, one room labelled ‘Special Needs’. but what’s elevated The Slow Readers Club further is the fact “It scared the shit out of me as they don’t shy away from issues a kid, to be honest,” he says. 18

“I found it a curious concept that people could just be separated from main education. The name Slow Readers Club was born out of a rejection of that. It’s like a championing of the underdog: don’t underestimate people.” Nobody is underestimating Slow Readers Club now, that’s for sure. Next on the agenda is a big winter tour – with two dates booked at The Ritz in December. “We’re really looking forward to it,” Aaron enthuses.

“The Ritz is a good size with a great dancefloor where you can still see the whites of people’s eyes when you’re on stage – so you feel involved with the crowd.”

“We’ve got two great bands supporting us as well: Jordan Allen and Spin. Be sure to get down early and see them; they’re worth checking out.” “In the new year we’ll release the new album. We’ve recorded our live show at the Apollo – so that will be out soon on DVD, too.” “We just want to keep developing as musicians, create new stuff and hit more festivals. The hope is that we just keep getting bigger.” The signs look good... Slow Readers Club perform at The O2 Ritz on 20th and 21st December.

FRESHERS GUIDE TO MANCHESTER First things first; welcome to Manchester, we’re buzzing you’re here. Second of all, well done for picking the best city in the country to let your hair down. It does help that our libraries are pretty good too when it comes to those study days, but we’re not here to talk about that. We’re here to share everything the capital of the North has for your big nights out. We’ve rounded up the best areas, the coolest venues and all the events you can’t afford to miss. All you need to do is splash that Student Loan cash and have a blast.

CITY CENTRE:

Gorilla

54-56 Whitworth St, Manchester, M1 5WW ££ The Comet is Coming 04.12.19 | £19 | 7:30pm-11pm

In the mood for some live indie action or all night techno? Maybe a random film screening? Or a mouthwatering burger and a couple of gins? Whatever you’re game for, head under the railway arches just off Oxford Road and Gorilla will have you covered. Before the year’s out, there’s loads of live music to look forward to. Winston Surfshirt, Floorplan, The Comet is Coming and local lad Jordan Allen, to name just a few.

Mayfield Depot

Fairfield St, Manchester, M1 2QF ££ WHP 19 - Feel My Bicep 30.11.19 | £38.50 | 6pm-4am

You’re landing in Manchester at the right time because the brand new Mayfield Depot is jaw-dropping. The disused railway station has been transformed into a 10,000 capacity venue that’s going to be used for live music, all-night parties, theatre performances, community events, markets, exhibitions, football screenings and more. What we’re most excited about though is that The Depot is the new home to internationally-loved club series, The Warehouse Project. In true WHP style, they’re rolling out the red carpet to electronic music royalty such as Four Tet, Fatboy Slim, The Martinez Brothers, Todd Terje and so many more.

O2 Ritz

Whitworth St W, Manchester, M1 5NQ ££ Ultimate Power Christmas Special 13.12.19 | £10.50 | 10:30pm-3am You get a feel for the Ritz’ past as soon as you walk in. Once an Art-Deco ballroom in the 1920s, it’s a stunning venue for all the latest gigs and nightlife. There’s stuff on most nights and some upcoming highlights include Neighbourhood Festival, DJ Yoda, Deerhunter and YG & Ty Dolla $ign. The club nights aren’t to be missed either, particularly the power ballad bonanza, Ultimate Power. The atmosphere is always unforgettable, so the Christmas special will be the best way to bid your new pals farewell before you head home for a festive break from Uni life.

42s

2 Bootle St, Manchester, M2 5GU £ Dirty Dancefloors All Nighter 27.09.19 | £5 | 10:30pm-6pm

Originally opened by George Best in the 60s, 42s has maintained its reputation as the place to party. Specialising in alternative music both new and classic, it’s the feel-good indie bar that you’ll find hard to stay away from. Oh, the drinks are some of the best value in town too. There are tonnes of events planned for new students in September, and once that famous fresher’s flu has disappeared, get yourself back out and on to their popular midweek and weekend themed club nights.

NORTHERN QUARTER

Jimmy's

Night & Day

Remember that band One Night Only? A proper throwback. Anyway, two brothers from the group got together a few years ago and opened up Jimmy’s in the Northern Quarter. The bar is lined with music memorabilia and neon lights and downstairs there’s a cosy venue that hosts anything from intimate gigs to quiz nights. Don’t miss the Tarantino Night in October where tribute band Pulp Friction will be singing, dancing and performing to all things Quentin and cool.

If you’re keen to spot the next big thing, then chances are you’ll find it at Night & Day. Over the years, the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Frank Turner, MGMT and Kasabian have graced the iconic stage on their way to the top. They host weekly showcases of up-and-coming bands alongside performances from artists you’ll know and love. If that’s not enough, there are regular special party nights on the weekends that celebrate a range of alternative genres. Everything you want from your new favourite venue.

Whether you fancy a bit of wholesome grub, a good pint, a boogie, or some live entertainment, Soup Kitchen has the lot. The basement venue hosts a mix of DJs and bands from across the musical spectrum in one of the coolest, no-frills spaces in town. In the upstairs bar, there’s always some good tunes filling the room and the big wooden benches make for a proper friendly Mancunian atmosphere. They also host student nights, including the popular Remake Remodel events. Perfect for your alternative, indie and rock ‘n’ roll fix.

A proper pub in the Northern Quarter, you’ll always have a good night in Gullivers. It’s a bit like walking into your mates house, but with a fully-stocked bar (the Guinness is great by the way). You’ve got the bustling front room as you walk in and two cosy back rooms, one of which is a homely performance space for acoustic nights. Upstairs is where the magic happens. The Ballroom boasts a busy calendar of live music, comedy, theatre, film screenings, spoken word, exhibitions and more.

Band on the Wall

25 Swan St, Manchester, M4 5JZ £ BOTW 10th Birthday Party 21.09.19 | £10 | 3pm-late

Band on the Wall has been showcasing live music in Manchester for the best part of a century, and it’s still winning awards today. It was the centre of the famous post-punk scene back in the 70s and hosted the likes of Joy Division, Buzzcocks and The Fall. Today, you’ll find gigs from every genre and every corner of the world as well as some cult club nights hosted by the likes of Craig Charles and Mr Scruff.

The biggest, Academy 1, regularly plays host to some of the hottest acts around. In the next few months, we’re set to be spoilt by Slowthai, Lewis Capaldi, Loyle Carner and plenty more. Don’t forget about Academy 2, 3 and Club Academy where there’s even more live music for you to get stuck into as well as plenty of party nights and special DJ appearances. Phew.

Factory Manchester

118 Princess St, Manchester, M1 7EN £ C.U.Next.Thursday | Every Thu £1 entry, £1.50 drinks | 11pm-4am There can’t be a chat about Manchester’s music history without a mention of Factory Records. Sadly, the record label is long gone, along with the Madchester clubbing scene, but, The Factory nightclub lives on in the old label offices. Opened up by Joy Division and New Order’s Peter Hook, the club and venue is now a haven for students. Why? Because, with regular £1 drinks deals, it doesn’t cost the earth to get drunk and have a good time. Simple, really.

YES

Antwerp Mansion

YES are celebrating their 1st birthday in September and what a first year it’s been. The new kid on the block has already established itself as one of the best places to be in town. Live music from every genre, scrumptious pizza by the slice, amazing after-parties, a rooftop bar, ace drinks offers and, not forgetting the best bit, dogs are allowed in. Also, the main gig room is painted plush pale pink from ceiling to floor. Just think how good that will look on your Instagram...

After a bit of trouble with the council last year, it looked like we were going to lose Antwerp Mansion for good. Thank your lucky stars that it survived and lives to fight another party or two. The old Victorian mansion is a staple of our late-night scene and is one of the coolest buildings around. The parties are becoming more regular too with most Saturdays in the 2019 calendar filled. The Halloween Ghost Hunt in that spooky, old, rickety building is our alternative pick of the bunch.

Deaf Institute

RNCM

Another one of our venues with an interesting name. The Deaf Institute used to be, you guessed it, an actual institute for deaf people. Now it's a bar, music venue, kitchen and basement club spread across 3 floors in a beautiful building. The gig calendar is packed with cutting edge indie and previous acts to have played there over the years include The XX, Tame Impala and The War on Drugs. Don't miss Stay Fresh Fest in Sept where some of the best up and coming bands will be showing off their wares.

If you’re here to study music, you’ll know all about the RNCM (Royal Northern College of Music). Students, teachers, conductors and composers flock from all around the world to learn and practice there. More recently, gig-goers have been heading down to the Oxford Road base too. The concert hall has been refurbished and hosts more than 400 events a year. The majority are orchestras, ensembles and operas but there are more and more alternative performances popping up, including Manchester jazz electronica three-piece GoGo Penguin in October.
