Manchester Academy £21ADV | 9pm
Manchester natives, 808 State, will perform a hometown show to round off their latest tour celebrating a whopping 30 years in music. Named after a Roland TR-808 drum machine, the electronic duo will perform iconic tracks alongside some brand-new material. They’re a genre-defining group that have explored the realms of techno, drum and bass, indie and even rock and were a key part of the 90s explosion of Manchester acts. Over the course of their colourful career, they have worked with an 10
a league of her own. Recently recognised by Hollywood, her atmospheric track ‘Skøgen Skulle Dø’ featured on the trailer for gritty thriller ‘Dark Crimes’, starring Jim Carey. Taking her haunting melodies and poignant choral arrangements on a European tour this year, she’s heading to Manchester’s Gorilla to play the final show. Despite the word ‘Myrkur’ meaning ‘darkness’, her hypnotic performance will certainly light up the room. 31.12.18
Yungen
O2 RItz | £17.50ADV | 10pm
South London MC, Yungen, will be making the most of Northern hospitality by bringing in the New Year at Manchester’s O2 Ritz as part of MTV Presents NYE. Starting his music simply as a personal outlet in 2009, it wasn’t until 2014 with the launch of his album, ‘Black & Red’, that he started to gain traction. Since then, he has received impressive accolades including nominations for ‘Best Newcomer’ at the MOBO
Awards and his name down on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s ‘One To Watch’ list. Following a collaboration with starlet Jess Glynne on the track ‘Mind On It’, this maestro MC is set to explode in 2019. Catch him while you can.

Ghostemane
Manchester Academy 3 £15ADV | 7:30pm
At first glance of American rapper, Ghostemane, it wouldn’t be surprising to think he lends himself to a metal scene, but that was him in a previous life. After performing in hardcore punk and 12
doom metal bands around Florida, he has now solidified himself on the underground rap and trap scenes – and it’s his goth aesthetic wrapped up in Memphis rap that has really helped the solo artist to stand out. Following the launch of his new album ‘N/O/I/S/E’ he’s gracing Oxford Road’s Academy 3, with his unique presence.

Cake
Manchester Academy 2 £22.50ADV | 7pm
Described as the “epitome of postmodern, irony-drenched 90s geek rock” – Cake are an eccentric funk foursome. Their somewhat smirky satirical vibe was first moulded in Sacramento, California in 1992, but it wasn’t until they released the single, ‘The Distance’, in 1996 that the quintet was really noticed. The song put them on the map, dominating alternative radio stations and even becoming an unlikely sportingevent anthem. More recently, their music has appeared on various film soundtracks and in October 2018 they released their first track in over seven years – titled ‘Sinking Ship’, the song is riddled with their signature groove. Giggoers can rest assure that Cake will be just the sweet stuff needed to combat any January blues.

For Adrianne Lenker songwriting is second nature. She started her craft at the age of ten and made her first solo record at the age of 21 while living in a New York warehouse, working in a restaurant and occupying her spare time photographing pigeons. Her feather-light guitar playing is peaceful yet powerful, with her songs focusing on all facets of human experience. She’ll be playing at Manchester’s newest venue, YES, supported by the equally stunning Squirrel Flower. Both artists imaginatively take on cathartic

It’s been quite a journey for Youngr. From tinkling on the piano at the age of 8 and starting bands with his brother at 13 to headlining shows across the globe as a one-man band. Most recently, a sold-out gig in an old covenant in Bolivia last December. Not bad for a lad from Manchester.

All the highlights from this year’s Manchester music scene
Bugzy Malone Scoops B. Inspired Award
Bugzy Malone is the undisputed king of Manchester grime. The rapper grew up in the city and has the distinctive accent to match, putting 0161 hip-hop on the map with riveting, locally-based coming of age tales. It was a huge moment when Bugzy was awarded the inaugural B. Inspired Award at the City of Champions Gala Dinner in November this year – a richly earned honour that recognised his integral contribution to the Manchester music scene.
Manchester Pride
The whole city starts smiling when Pride rolls into town each summer – and the 2018 edition of these famous Canal Street festivities served up a fantastic feast of music to celebrate LGBT societies in Manchester and beyond. Rita Ora commanded the stage in her headline slot, whilst Jake Shears, Sigala, Alexandra Burke, Pete Tong, Paulette and Danny Howard also chipped in to soundtrack the rainbow-coloured weekend.
Ruby Lounge Bows Out
Once upon a time, Ruby Lounge was a jewel in the crown of Manchester gig venues – eschewing the glitzy connotations its name suggested and offering a darkened, down-to-earth vibe that lured the likes of The Courteeners, Two Door Cinema Club and Florence + The Machine through its doors. After forty years of experimenting with different makeup and identities, Ruby Lounge finally closes for good this year – with their Forever Grunge show on the 21st December marking an end of era. 26
Blossoms Bloom
Blossoms have blown up in a spectacular way in recent years, but they clearly haven’t forgotten their roots. The Stockport-born band took to the stage on as many as five occasions in Manchester this year – suffusing music venues with local pride following some outstanding performances. They’re also set to play a huge home gig next year – with the band booked into Edgeley Park on June 22nd.
Saving Antwerp
From its stripped-down décor to its downright dodgy bathrooms, walking into Antwerp Mansion always felt like a really good house party. And, like with all the really good house parties, the raucousness eventually attracted the unwanted attention of neighbours and police. Clandestine in nature, Antwerp found itself in unfamiliar talked-about territory this year as reports spread of permanent closure due to noise complaints. However, the enigmatic venue was saved by the skin of its teeth by a petition and resurrected in a near-identical guise albeit with earlier opening hours; a real fist-pumping moment for Manchester music lovers if there ever was one.
Parklife
Given our city’s habit of spending much of its time stood beneath cold showers, Manchester might not appear the perfect place to host an outdoor festival. Yet Parklife has proven itself to be like an expandable water toy; the wetter it gets, the more it keeps growing. Sodden turf and liquid brown hills are never a match for Parklife ticket-holders, and whilst crowds arrived at Heaton Park this June expecting another mudbath, 2018 actually ended up being one of the warmest, sunshine-bathed weekends yet. Thousands whipped out their sunnies to see homegrown superstar Liam Gallagher, Skepta, N.E.R.D, Bonobo and A$AP Rocky as Manchester’s staple festival enjoyed another awesome year. 27
Neighbourhood Festival
Spread out across a sparkling variety of venues (including The Ritz, Albert Hall, Academy, Deaf Institute and Gorilla) Neighbourhood is a sprawling music festival that takes punters on a musical tour through Manchester city centre. 2018 saw the concept truly blossom in its third incarnation, with Everything Everything, Sundara Karma, Temples, Swim Deep and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly lighting up stages on an unforgettable October Saturday.
The Fall on a Chippy Wall
The Mark E Smith mural was a “woah” moment on the Manchester music scene this year. Graffiti artist Akse P19 etched the illustration on the side of a Prestwich chippy in October – leading to swarms of culture vultures swooping in to stare up at the iconic frontman of The Fall. The eye-catching mural also inspired a flurry of further paintings inspired by Smith’s famous lyrics, with more than 60 artists worldwide whipping out their paintbrushes and having their finished work displayed at Bury Art Museum.
A Toast To St Jude…
The Courteeners’ debut album St Jude celebrated its 10th anniversary this year and Camden Town Brewery ensured everyone had the right means to celebrate; fermenting a specially-made St Jude Pils beer that was bottled up and served across the city. The band even got involved in the brewing process, with fans sipping on the limited edition lager in the likes of Black Dog Ballroom, Cane & Grain and Bay Horse Tavern. 28
Farewell, Venus
The Manchester music scene is forever in flux. It’s what keeps our city so in tune with evolving tastes… but it also means the face of clubland never stays the same for long. Dubbed the “heart of house”, Venus was among the first veteran venues to make way for younger blood in 2018, closing its doors after two decades of pumping dance music through the darkened nights of the rainy city. A long list of wistful DJs, promoters and punters all paid tribute to the Blackfriars Street spot, with owners citing increased competition as a key factor in shutting up shop.
Academy Music Group take over Victoria Warehouse
The former home of Warehouse Project began to increasingly shake away its synonymousness with underground house in 2018 – broadening its horizons and rebranding as the O2 Victoria Warehouse. Any O2 customers who suffered at the hands of the provider’s infamous outage this year might be inclined to forgive and forget moving forwards – as they’re now entitled to 48-hour early access to all gigs at this monster venue before they go on general sale.
Manchester says ‘YES’
When one music venue dies, another is born. A dream team of Now Wave and Deaf Institute put together plans for a mega multifaceted four-floor gig venue on Charles Street this year, decking out every room in a different way and pledging to cap at least one lager at £3 every evening. They called their ambitious creation YES – and Manchester’s music lovers have been flooding in through the doors since opening night in September. Booking a long list of record spinners and live performers, YES opted to go in hard from the off – and the momentum shows absolutely no sign of stopping… 29
Bluedot Festival
Half science showcase, half music bonanza, Bluedot is an electrifying newcomer to the local festival scene – outdoing itself this year by booking dance music juggernauts The Chemical Brothers in the headline slot at Jodrell Bank. Fusing music with mind-warping tech displays, the success of Bluedot 2018 catapulted the event to even greater status. Kraftwerk are already booked in for 2019, with tickets flying off the shelves for another massive occasion.
33 Oldham Street
YES was the name of everyone’s lips towards the end of this year – but it wasn’t the only multi-purpose venue to spring up in Manchester in 2018. Across the other side of the city in the heart of the Northern Quarter, 33 Oldham Street placed barmen alongside baristas on their payroll, converting the once-humble coffee shop into a swiss army knife-style venue containing a cafe, workspace, ‘listening room’, lounge, bar and mini cinema – as well as whopping rooftop terrace.
Sounds of the City
Castlefield Bowl was the site of some serious emotional turmoil this year. It was where hundreds of football fans roared in unified delight at Kieran Tripper’s world cup free-kick, only to trudge back down the canal in disappointment hours later. It was where hundreds had planned to see Morrissey, only for The Smiths singer to pull out of his scheduled shows. Thankfully, when the beloved Sounds of the City gigs rolled around, the result matched the hype. Nile Rodgers & Chic, Shed Seven, Hacienda Classical and Rag’N’Bone Man sent the waterside venue into raptures this summer to restore the feel-good factor. 30
