Contents For this edition, we departed our beloved Manchester for the sub-zero temperatures of Groningen (NL) to check out the hottest new music signees showcased at Eurosonic Noorderslag. From this expedition, we’ve compiled a list of artists you NEED to check out before they make it big in 2019! Whilst in the Netherlands we had some good old fashioned face-time with Sea Girls to chat about their Eurosonic performance, love of Manchester, debut album and UK tour. New Order and Hot Chip will join Kraftwerk in headlining this year’s edition of the music, science, arts and cosmic culture festival. Manchester loses two Record Stores as HMV is acquired out of administration. Our beloved Fopp on Brown Steet and HMV in the Trafford Centre were closed immediately when Canadian retailer Sunrise Records bought out the struggling chain on the 5th February. Sunrise, fought off competition from the likes of Mike Ashley of Sports Direct who reportedly wanted to transition the HMV and Fopp brands into his recently acquired House Of Fraser department stores. The deal saw Sunrise acquire 100 stores across the UK safeguarding the future of nearly 1,500 staff but unfortunately, the two Manchester stores couldn’t be salvaged in the buyout deal.

Our pick of the best shows this month
Childhood friends Leo Wyndham, Matt Hodges and Robert Turner are the dynamic trio that is Palace. When the alt-rockers were first starting out with just one EP under their belts, they were asked to contrast Jamie T’s rowdy rock ‘n’ roll sound by supporting him on his London comeback trail. Now selling out their own shows, their performance is relaxed to the bone. Their subtle sound adds layers of soul to dreamy laidback guitar-led tracks. You will be blown away by their bluesy, woosy embrace at Manchester’s Band on the Wall.

10
Want something a bit different in your February gig schedule? Look no further than Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. Spearheaded by Bradlee, the pianist and arranger takes contemporary tracks and fashions them into songs that sound like they would be well placed in eras between the 1920s and 1950s. He first uploaded songs to YouTube in 2009 and later upped the ante in 2012 with a full album of reimagined Nickelback tracks in a Motown style. But it was his version of Miley Cyrus’ ‘We Can’t Stop’ that shot him to fame and the YouTube video has since racked up over 20million views. Collaborating with amazing vocalists and musicians, you’ll be in for a spectacular evening of vintage glamour at the Albert Hall.
cry from the Montreal based performer’s original guitar loaded indie music, his lo-fi synthesized music is textured, grounded and intimate. Before going solo he was part of Mac DeMarco’s touring band, providing guitar, keyboard and backing vocals for the popular artist. With similar charms to DeMarco himself, his laid-back R&B tropes make his music incredibly millennial and would be just as well placed being played in a thrift shop as it is on stage. Expect to come away feeling inspired, relaxed and maybe a little blissed out.

Ward Thomas
Albert Hall | £18.50ADV | 7pm
Hampshire twin sisters Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas take on the American dominated genre of country with their own chemistry laden twist. Topping the UK album chart with their second studio album, ‘Cartwheels’ the duo is a force to be reckoned with. Their music taps into zeitgeist-y issues such as coming of age in an era of anxiety, social media and #MeToo. And, their most recent album, ‘Restless Minds’, was produced by Ed Sheeran’s producer, plus Sheeran’s classically-trained older brother Matt arranged the strings on the album.

Seth Lakeman
RNCM | £25DV | 7pm
Seth Lakeman, former member of the semi-retired folk quintet, Equation, was probably the most unlikely member of the pack to forge a successful solo career. But the frenzied fiddle and guitar player has transformed himself into one of the hottest talents on the British folk scene, achieving fame and success well beyond the genre’s norm. Lakeman has recently released his ninth album, ‘The Well Worn Path’, featuring his new four-piece band and a more prog-rock approach to his formative sound. He’ll be gracing Manchester’s world-class Royal Northern College of Music

A true pioneer of jazz-funk, James Mason will be performing for the first time in 15 years at Gorilla. She learnt classical piano and singing as a child, then moved on to guitar in her teenage years and latterly studied at Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts. Go watch Merton perform her personal tracks which span issues of her unmoored upbringing and turbulent relationships.

Tonight is new territory for Sea Girls. They’ve taken an almighty leap and left landlocked London for a maiden voyage to the Netherlands. In just a few hours’ time, they’ll be on stage at Europe’s showcase music festival: Eurosonic. The four musicians are a long way from home and it’s a big evening for such a young band. But they sound ready for it.
“We’ve done a lot of rehearsing and writing and we are working really hard to grow that into our best sound,” Sea Girls lead singer Henry Camamile tells The Live Guide. “Most importantly for us, it’s about getting new fans wherever we play a show. We give it our all and have as much fun as possible and hopefully, people really get into it.” Drummer, Oli Khan, elaborates on their prep. “We’ve also looked back at our previous live shows to see how we can build on it to be better. This year, we’re doing everything we can to spread the word about Sea Girls.” This late-night slot in Groningen’s Haus Maus is another big step in the band’s mission to get their homophone heard, as their trio of earwormy EPs (powered by passionate vocal performances and euphoric guitar twangs) continue to receive wide airplay back on home turf. Pals since school, Sea Girls originally began playing across two separate groups. But as members of both bands found themselves
it gives us a mandate to do what we want to do. When you write something and it’s being pushed by all these amazing people it feels so incredible.”
flowing towards the Thames and a new life in London, they all joined at an estuary and decided to ride the waves of the gig scene together as an ensemble. It’s been wet and wild fun ever since.
“It’s just unreal,” exclaims Oli. “We’ve had our friends message us saying ‘I’ve just heard your track on the radio’ and I think ‘what?!’ - I can’t be living in the real world!”
Sea Girls are rapidly gaining a reputation for hosting gigs that leave punters wringing sweat from their shirts en route to the exit, but they’re also causing a splash among critics and tastemakers – listed as the sole band on BBC Music Sound Of 2019 list.
Part of Sea Girls’ appeal is their fluidity. The band’s tracks are tough to pin down in any one genre, with Henry and Oli citing multiple artists as inspiration for their songwriting.
“I can’t be living in the real world!”
“It just felt so special when we realised we were the only band on that list,” Oli Khan “We’re not inspired by Henry says. “It was any particular style awesome. When of music. It’s hard I saw all the great musicians on there it was a bit of for us to pinpoint our influences… a shock to be included alongside but it always seems to be strong musicians,” says Henry. “I’d say The them.” Killers and Bloc Party, but also solo The vocal backing for Sea Girls artists like Amy Winehouse.” from Radio 1 and Radio X has been deafening in recent months, “Our live shows are high energy and the band believe this kind of from the start – singalongs and a recognition has helped them get lot of moshing. It’s often pretty wild and we just lose ourselves. We have this far. a great time on stage and our aim is “It’s so, so cool having that kind of to make everyone in the room have support,” remarks Henry. “We feel just as much fun, I guess.” 16
“I’d call our music emerging, exciting and direct.” Oli corrects his bandmate with a chuckle: “Very direct.”
that has already earned cult status among native fans – ‘All I Want To Hear You Say’.
“It’s one of our favourite singles and it always goes down a storm in Manchester,” says Oli. “People go mad for it! It’s a special feeling performing the track to fans who live in the city.”
Sea Girls will be bringing their slamdancing shows to Manchester on at least two occasions this year, playing at Gorilla and the iconic Castlefield Bowl venue as support for The Kooks.
“Manchester is one of our favourite cities to perform in,”
The Live Guide also learn there’s a debut album coming… but the guys are keeping their cards close to their chest on this one for the time being.
“I saw Arcade Fire at Castlefield Bowl a few years ago and that was one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to, so to say I’m Henry Camamile looking forward to playing there is “It’s not ready at all an understatement,” says Henry. yet” Henry sniggers. “So there’s not “When I was there at the time I that much I can say on that. We’re thought it would be amazing to play just hoping to get it out in 2019.” here. If we can create half as much energy as Arcade Fire did it will be a “For the Gorilla show we’ll be great gig, big time.” bringing some new songs and playing them live for the first time,” “Manchester is one of our favourite adds Oli. “If we feel it works we’ll cities to perform in, I used to have a write it into the debut album.” girlfriend that lived there who I used to visit, so the city is very special to You can Catch Sea Girls in me.” Manchester when they stop off at Gorilla, as part of their UK tour, on Manchester actually makes its way the 5th March 2019. Ones to watch: Keen to liven up those playlists with something new? Fancy being one of the first to discover the hottest live acts that are set to blow up this year? Well, the next 3 pages have all the answers to your musical prayers. We’ve just returned from one of Europe’s top music showcase festivals, Eurosonic Noorderslag, where hundreds of promising artists strut their stuff. We’ve rounded up the top acts that you won’t want to miss when they visit us here in Manchester.
Bishop Briggs:
Listen: River // The Way I Do FFO: Alice Merton // Adele
A tantalising and refreshing mix of folk, pop and electronic, Bishop Briggs’ unique sound hasn’t gone unnoticed. The 26 year-old was catapulted into stardom when her debut single, the stunning ‘Wild Horses’ was heard the world over after it was featured on a car ad in America. She’s got much more in her armory than advert music though, her 2018 album ‘Church Of Scars’ is an emotionally charged and soulful work of art. 26
The Blinders:
Live: 27.04.19 | O2 Ritz £12.50ADV | 6:30pm Listen: Gotta Get Through // I Can’t Breath Blues FFO: Cabbage // Bloody Knees
Raw, loud and bursting with energy, The Blinders are everything you want from a political punk rock band. The three-piece cite influences ranging from The Wytches to George Orwell and their sound is just as varied. The lyrics are psychedelic and the riffs have a garage rock and blues quality to them. Having already supported The Charlatans and Cabbage, the Manchesterbased band have a promising future ahead.

Listen: Olalla FFO: Wild Rivers // George Ogilvie
The Slow Readers Club:
Live: 26.05.19 | Neighbourhood Weekender | FRM£55 | 12:30pm Listen: Lunatic // Plant The Seed FFO: The Charlatans // Gaz Coombes
Deservedly finding their way out of the indie shadows, The Slow Readers Club are establishing themselves as one of the best guitar-driven electro pop bands in the country. The Mancunian four-piece had a fairytale 2018. After receiving a lot of hard- earned airtime on BBC 6Music and Radio X, they saw out the year by quitting their day jobs and selling out the Apollo. Not bad.
LION:
Listen: Self Control // Oh No FFO: P!nk // Yonaka LION’s incredible rasping vocals are reminiscent of Janis Joplin while her soaring, bluesy guitar riffs sound like something The White Stripes would be proud of. The London artist’s powerful live sets have attracted plenty of admirers and have led to some pretty notable support slots for Albert Hammond
28
Boy Azooga:
Listen: Face Behind Her Cigarette // Waitin’ FFO: Gengahr // Goat Girl
If you like your rock with a bit of rave, Boy Azooga are the band for you. The Welsh four-piece are as much The Super Furry Animals as they are Happy Mondays. Released in 2018, their debut album ‘1,2 Kung Fu!’ is packed full of energy with a contrast of musical styles that includes the use of a maraca and sleighbells. Interested? You should be.
Lxandra:
Elderbrook Listen: Cola FFO: Disciples // Hayden James
Black Midi
Listen: Mmbmbm FFO: Passion Pit // MGMT
Listen: Dig Deep // Flicker FFO: Yona // Ki: Theory
Lxandra’s hauntingly soulful voice and dark, synthy-pop instrumentals are enough to give you goosebumps. Originally from a small, quiet island off the coast of Finland, the 21 year-old swapped the remote life for something more lively and inspiring in Berlin. It’s here that Lxandra has written and released a catalogue of emotionally-charged and atmospheric tunes, some of which will make up her eagerly anticipated album later this year.
Blanco White
Listen: Olalla FFO: Wild Rivers // George Ogilvie
Cassia:
Listen: 100 Times Over // Get Up Tight FFO: The Magic Gang // Clean Cut Kid
Cassia draw inspiration from an array of genres; from Talking Heads to afrobeat kings Fela Kuti and Ebo Taylor, the threepiece are an indie-pop band that pack a punch. With all the joy and dance-along goodness of Vampire Weekend, the lads from Macclesfield have already racked up a staggering 3 million streams on Spotify and played headline shows across the country, including our very own O2 Ritz.
Mahalia:
Live: 09.04.19 | O2 Ritz | £19ADV | 7PM Listen: I Wish I Missed My Ex // Sober FFO: Amber Marks // RAY BLK Mahalia fuses a perfect mix of cool, alternative R&B with honest and imaginative lyrics that create soulful stories worth listening to. This year looks set to be massive thanks to the release of the catchy single ‘Do Not Disturb’ in February and a nomination for the Brits Critics’ Choice prize. After entertaining a sold-out Gorilla last October, we’re fortunate enough to get another chance to see the 21 year-old star do her thing at the O2 Ritz in April.
Black Futures:
Listen: Trance // Karma Ya Dig!? FFO: Fangclub // Public Service Broadcasting
If there’s a good kind of mayhem, it’s Black Futures. Their distinctive cocktail of electro- psych-punk is loud, chaotic and sounds like a mix between The Chemical Brothers and Nine Inch Nails. Describing their own music as, “future punk with a fuck for good measure”, the London duo are a mystery that we can’t wait to get stuck into.
