Morrissey Cancels Castlefield Bowl Shows

Mozza will no longer be returning home for his two huge outdoor shows, which were set to take place at Castlefield Bowl this July in support of his latest album, ‘Low In High School’. The cancellations have been put down to “logistical reasons” and Morrissey has promised to reschedule the shows soon. Fans can hold out for the new dates or receive a full refund including booking fees from their ticket agent.

Now Wave Names New Venue

Yes, we all know that local promoters Now Wave are planning on opening a venue in a former auction house on Charles Street, but the new word is that it will be named ‘YES’. And if you say ‘Yes’ to their opening night on the 20th September there will be 5,000 free drinks and complimentary food! For more details of the opening keep a close eye on @yes_mcr.

Manchester Photographer and drummer Dionne Cyprus is hoping to raise 50k for Christies Hospital. Her aim is to snap 50 “amazing drummers” from different genres in music. Drummers snapped for the campaign so far include Joe Donovan of the Blossoms, Chic’s Ralph Rolle and Cabbage’s Asa Morley. You can find out who else has been snapped and donate to the cause by visiting justgiving. com/Beat-it-project

Picks

As era-defining bands go, there are few with wider appeal. From festival gigs to first dances, pretty much everyone has at least one memory jogged by a number from The Killers’ back catalogue. No less than 14 years after the release of their breakthrough debut ‘Hot Fuss’, they are still hella worthy of headlining arena shows and draw in the crowds to prove it. After a soldout UK tour last year, the Las Vegas indie megaband is coming to Bolton’s open-air Macron Stadium for a one-off summer shindig. After releasing their latest LP, ‘Wonderful Wonderful’, in September last year, this is the band’s first stadium gig since they played to a sold-out Wembley Stadium in June 2013, it promises to be a big one.

The De Rossi Incident Gullivers | £5ADV | 7pm

Drawn together from a love of snow sports, beer and heavy metal, three mates from Manchester formed De Rossi Incident as they realised that there just weren’t enough venues playing the music they wanted to jam to. A self-confessed party band, this energetic trio began covering rock and metal classics for friends in a pub in Mayrhofen, Austria, before hitting the studio back on their home turf. Stoked to be “finally playing in Manchester and not Austria”, the band have secured the Saturday night slot at Gullivers, and they want everyone to know about it.

provoking sound for almost two decades. Teenage years playing in rock bands might have given Holland his love for music, but it’s his forays in the house and broken beat scene that got him noticed. With occasional dub influences, a tinge of Latino and retro soul twangs, Quantic’s diversity is what keeps people coming back – so much so that this is an additional second night at Band On The Wall after through-the-roof demand for tickets the first time around.

Blackwaters

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Jimmy’s | £6.50ADV | 7:30pm

O2 Ritz | £55.55ADV | 7pm

Formed in Guildford, Blackwaters are a punk-rock band made up of university pals who list their influences as the likes of The Clash, Dead Kennedys, John Cooper Clarke and The Ramones. They’re loud, they’re unapologetic, and their sound is original, blending elements learnt from years listening to The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys. They’ve even collaborated with Carl Barat after he saw them at a gig in Camden and liked their sound. If you like your punk to have a few more catchy choruses akin to influential bands of the recent indie-pop era, give these guys a go.

Never content to be outdone by one another, 2018 has given us a double-whammy from the enigmatic Oasis brothers. Whilst one Gallagher headlined Parklife Festival and delivered a touching tribute to 70,000 people, the other is performing a most intimate gig to an exclusive 1,500 at the O2 Ritz. ‘Who Built The Moon?’, the third album from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, sealed something of a hat trick for the band; debuting at No. 1 in November last year and achieving Gold certification less than two weeks after its release – following 2011’s eponymous album and 2015’s ‘Chasing Yesterday’. One of the smallest performances of the world tour, it’s a homecoming not to miss. 19-22.07.18

Jodrell Bank Observatory, Cheshire | £175 (Weekend)

Astronomers, ravers and musos alike once a year gravitate to Jodrell Bank Observatory for an awesome weekend of science and music. The action starts on Thursday this year 12

with a screening of The Blue Planet in concert with The Hallé orchestra. Followed by a veritable mix of dance acts performing beneath the Lovell telescope, talks from scientists, stargazing sessions and exhibitions and workshops on space exploration, there’s something for everyone at this one of a kind festival. The Chemical Brothers, The Flaming Lips and Future Islands headline.

African influences, the strong Mediterranean holiday-lilt is the thread that runs through, and is totally fitting in Manchester’s current heat wave. 03.08.18

Ata Kak

Band On The Wall £15.50ADV | 7pm

A global search began in 2015 by a certain music blogger, to find the artist behind a mysterious mid-90s album he picked up in a street market in Cape Coast, Ghana, in 2002. Describing it as “frenetic leftfield rap madness”, the blogger in question was desperate to track down the man behind the music. After some three years searching internationally, Ata Kak was unveiled as Yaw Atta-Owusu, a self-taught Ghanaian musician whose infectious hybrid of reggae and dancehall saw him playing in bands from Dusseldorf to Toronto. Witness one of the first live European performances of his Ghanaian highlife and American soul/hip-hop mash-up at BOTW.

Gipsy Kings

Opera House | FRM£51 | 7pm

Born in France to Berber-Moroccan and Spanish gypsy parents, The Gipsy Kings’ Catalan rumbainspired music has become timelessly recognisable throughout the generations. Arguably the original gypsy travelling band, their colourful career has seen them bring progressive poporiented flamenco to the wider world audience since the 1970s. Fickle Friends are a band that scream summer. From the palm tree cursor on their website to the Dirty Dancing-esque font of their logo, which evokes summers spent mastering the rumba with Patrick Swayze. Fun and cheeky singles like ‘Glue’ provide the backdrop to holiday romances, ‘Say No More’ should be added to your BBQ playlist, while ‘Swim’ is sure to perk you up and get you dancing on the final day of a festival. Even as we sit down with lead singer and indie-pop IT girl Natti Shiner to chat about the band’s journey so far, her newly bleached blonde bob conjures up images of sandy white beaches.

With hosepipe bans on the cards, sales of hand-held ice-creams up 24% on the previous year, and worries about a lettuce shortage, 2018 has surprised the nation with, at times, hotter temperatures than Athens, Istanbul and Rome. As the weather remains positively sweltering, things are also hotting up for Fickle Friends.

as being a promoter as such, you just feel like your putting shows on sale and hope you’ve made a few friends online. You’ve got to do all your social media stuff, which is now a part of the package and a part of the job.”

“Things just kinda fell into place and the rest is history”

Finally, after two years touring the UK and Europe and performing at 53 festivals, all without a label, Fickle Friends had organically earned their stripes as well as a devoted fan base, and as such signed to Polydor Records.

Having met at uni in Brighton, the band began their career in true DIY style by promoting their own shows and gaining a Natti Shiner following on socials. Natti explains, “We did the whole Brighton circuit for a couple of years and then things just “After [laughs] a lot of DIY we got a kinda fell into place and the rest is new Manager because we realised history I suppose.” that we had a lot of trouble meeting the right people. Just because “It was good because we had a before we had more of a friend booking agent quite early on and than a Manager, who didn’t have a he was so great with us and doing lot of experience. So we changed our own tours was really cool. You management and it just happened don’t really think about yourself really quite naturally.“ 17

“We had meetings with a few labels who really liked us and they came and watched us play in a rehearsal room and then we decided on the Polydor deal.” The group’s debut album ‘You Are Someone Else’ dropped in March 2018. Natti enthused, “we just feel like a proper band now we have an album out, which is a bit weird.” Featuring a throng of catchy singles, and a cover designed by Mat Maitland (the man behind the

the ‘Disclosure face’), the record reached No. 9 in the UK Albums Chart, and No. 1 in the UK Album Cassette Chart. “It was a long time coming and it definitely succeeded my own expectations and I was over the moon and couldn’t quite believe it to be honest.” Despite its killer tunes and timely electro-pop sensibilities, the themes behind the record go much deeper than the initial enjoyment they provide. With songs

18

addressing social awkwardness, self-doubt, anxiety and the qualms of growing into young adulthood. The album perfectly expresses both the joy and uncertainty of growing up as a millennial.

“We always wanted to make a record that made people dance and think at the same time,” explains Natti. “I think the album and the lyrics focus a lot on growing up as a millennial. Dealing with anxiety in a way that people can be quite vocal about

now that people have a universal understanding of mental health and everyone has experienced it in one way or another, whether themselves or via someone else. So I touch on that quite a lot and I also focus on relationships and how I’ve been naive in them.” “I’ve never started writing a song with any intentions because it seems silly to try and write a song if you don’t really know what it’s about or where it’s coming from.”

The band are hot stuff this summer, showcasing ‘You Are Someone Else’ out on the festival circuit with performances at Tramlines, Truck Festival, Reading & Leeds, Y Not Festival and 110 Above Festival over the coming months.

year, pledging that by 2022 they will have a 50/50 male to female artist line-up, the female-fronted Fickle Friends are flying the flag for gender equality in the music industry. Natti explains, “I just want to be a good role model but I’m quite vocal about equality because music is still a very male-dominated industry. You know, there are still now some issues with bookings and fees and things like that.”

“It’s very exciting, you play to a mixed crowd; some of them are fans and some of them have just thought I’ll go and check them out. So you don’t know who the people are but it does feel like there’s a lot less Natti Shiner pressure. You just “To me, I’m just in rock up, compared a band with my to being on tour and best mates and waking up at 8am we see each other stressed in a city, doing load in, as equal but I suppose it’s cool and sound check and interviews, before empowering to front a band of four the show has even happened. boys.” So festivals are a really nice time for us to have fun, get drunk Expect palm trees aplenty when and watch all the other bands.” Fickle Friends’ take their debut on their biggest UK tour to date this With 45 global festivals having October, culminating with a show at signed up to a scheme, earlier this Manchester Academy.

“It’s cool and empowering to front a band of four boys”

20

“We’re going to go big or go home. We’re going to do the biggest shows we have ever done before and we’re going to slip some new music in again, I think, keep everyone excited.” “We’re going big on the palm trees and taking everything we have got and packing it into a tour bus.

I just want it to be an immersive experience; a big party, somewhere you can just escape and not have to think about anything else for an hour and half.” Arguably more Palm Springs than Brighton Pier, the Yanks love them too, with one sold-out tour in the US behind them and another on the

cards for September. “Our American trip [was the highlight of our year], definitely. It was the first time we had ever had headline shows out there and they all soldout! We’re going back in September - I’m so excited!” Ahead of their Autumn tour, the next few months of sunshine are

the perfect window of opportunity to get yourself acquainted with Fickle Friends. So add them to your summer playlists, check them out at this year’s festivals, all while you enjoy a huge dose of Vitamin D. Catch Fickle Friends on the 27th October 2018, at Manchester Academy.
