Local promoters Now Wave have spent the last few months converting a former auction house on Charles Street into a two-stage live music venue. So far, plans for Manchester’s newest venue have been kept tightly under wraps - even its name is top secret.

Mozza will return home for two huge outdoor shows at Castlefield Bowl this July in support of his latest album, ‘Low In High School’.

However, over the past couple of weeks tickets for the venue have mysteriously appeared on SeeTicket’s website. pseudonym of L.A. songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Melina Duterte. Thanks to a catalogue of melodic bedroom-pop singles on Bandcamp and a pseudonym from the same Wu-Tang Names Generator that turned Donald Glover into Childish Gambino, Jay Som was signed in 2016 releasing her official debut, ‘Everybody Works’ last year. An accomplished songwriter, Jay Som’s live performance promises to bring another dimension to what is an already varied and vibrant, strong record from start to end.

Misty’s Big Adventure

Misty’s Big Adventure are not like other groups. The eight-piece band from Birmingham, led by “not good looking frontman” Grandmaster Gareth mix pop, ska and jazz with indie, psychedelia, folk, punk and lounge. If you can imagine what that sounds like. Despite NME calling their single ‘Hey Man!’ “a bobbing turd in the toilet of music!”, whatever they do, it works. They’ve toured with the likes of The Zutons, The Magic Numbers, The Guillemots, Jeff Lewis, Kimya Dawson, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Dodgy, The Bluetones and 50 Foot Wave over their 22-year long career, as well as playing Bestival, End Of The Road and Green Man. Oh, and they have a dancing monster called Erotic Volvo.

One of the original members of rap crew Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah (AKA Tony Starks) has been distinguishing himself as a solo artist since 1995, with an ever-increasing career of collabs under his belt since. In lieu of commemorating the 25th anniversary of their debut album ‘Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’, the Wu-Tang Clan recently embarked on performing the entire legendary LP live, at festivals in Minnesota and Detroit - and now,

Portico Quartet

Essaie Pas

Despite being Mercury Prizenominated, the London-based Portico Quartet seem to enjoy being somewhat elusive. Fusing jazz, minimalism, electronic and ambient beats, the group have honed in on their own singular, cinematic sound over the course of four albums since their debut in 2007. Long gone are their days of busking on the South Bank; with latest offering, ‘Art In The Age Of Automation’, receiving generous acclaim, The Guardian likening their sound to Massive Attack and 808 State. Meanwhile, companion album ‘Untitled (AITAOA #2)’ bolsters their ambiguous offering.

Marie Davidson and Pierre Guerineau make up Essaie Pas, a Canadian duo hailing from Montréal, whose sound combines dark, minimal synth-pop, French pop, Italo-disco, and a certain element of horror movie soundtrack sampling. Spoken and sung by both Davidson and Guerineau, their lyrics revolve around themes such as loneliness, sexuality, and fantasy, designed to be listened to on long, late nights. Loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s dystopian sci-fi classic ‘A Scanner Darkly’, their second album, ‘New Path’, released in 2018, is as edgy, experimental and enchanting as you would expect. 12

A love of music spawned from childhood drum lessons and tempered by the turmoil of losing beloved family members is evident in his offkilter-pop output peppered with deeply personal lyrics that reflect on the darker side of human experience. His 12th album, ‘The Deconstruction’, featuring Koool G Murder and P-Boo, draws on his interest in electronic composition and, reflecting on a somewhat tumultuous career, is something of a return-to-form for the introspective indie-rocker.

Fusing a 35-piece orchestra with acid-house floor-fillers might not seem like an obvious recipe for success, but Haçienda Classical is exactly that. The classical-meetsclubland concept sees FAC 51’s original DJ partnership Graeme Park and Mike Pickering, alongside executive producer Peter Hook, reinterpret the seminal dance classics from the glory days of the Haçienda – with renowned chamber orchestra Manchester Camerata, and gospel choir, AMC. All that remains to be seen is whether Manchester will ever tire of that Blue Monday bassline. 03.07.18
