Night & Day Café founder Jan Oldenburg has died, aged 71.

The Dutchman opened the ve n u e - c o m e - c h i p - s h o p’ s doors in 1991 and since then it has played host to the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Snow Patrol, Mumford & Sons and Kasabian. Oldenburg has been instrumental in the formation of the city that we know and love today. As the venue explained on Twitter, “He saw possibilities on Oldham Street when it was all but derelict, before the Northern Quarter had its name and before developers caught on.”

Say Goodbye To The Ruby Lounge

The Ruby Lounge has had many incarnations - from a restaurant, to an ’80s wine bar and a gangster-run urban nightclub in the ’90s and early ‘00s. Since then the rough and ready venue has stolen our hearts with early shows from the likes of The Courteeners, Florence + The Machine and Two Door Cinema Club alongside messy but memorable club nights.

Sankeys To Celebrate 25th Anniversary

Next year Sankeys will mark 25 years of late nights, loud dancefloors and sleepless Sundays with a 14-date UK tour. The run will culminate with a very special festival style all-day-andall-nighter in the former club’s hometown of Manchester on the 13th July 2019, venue TBC.

The venue will be closing its doors for good this Christmas to make way for a new £79m development of flats, office and retail space. Catch their final show ‘Forever Grunge’ on the 21st December 2018.

her iconic flame-licked locks, Florence Welch is one of the most hypnotic performers of our time; a figurehead for the modern British power ballad. Bolstered by a dynamic ensemble of multitalented musicians that raise a befittingly powerful platform for her sonorous, unmistakable vocals, Florence’s music is dark, romantic, uplifting and impassioned in equal measure. Her group is set to send the Manchester Arena into raptures in November as part of a promotional tour for their fourth studio release, ‘High As Hope’.

in the mould of Liam Fray or The Gallagher Brothers, Miles Kane might draw comparisons with frontmen from Mancunia, but his roots are deeply submerged on the other side of the county border in Merseyside. Making his name in music with The Rascals and The Last Shadow Puppets (alongside Arctic Monkey’s Alex Turner), Kane has since forged a solo career out of glam rock head-bangers that pay homage to the vintage rock and roll of old. He rides into Manchester Academy this November on the back of the brawny ‘Coup de Grace’ – a roaring release which features collaborations with Jamie T and Lana Del Rey.

A profoundly personal work, TMOLH was utterly unique in the way it laid bare The Fugees singer’s deepest concerns and desires, but also in how it fused rap, reggae and soul with such intelligence and deft. Years & Years

O2 Apollo | £31.50ADV | 7pm

It’s easy to forget that Years & Years’ electro-pop hit ‘King’ swooned its way to the top spot in the UK charts way back in 2015. The London trio’s career-launching, partystarting anthem receives wide weekend airplay to this day, yet the band refuse to rest on their laurels. Their lauded sophomore album (including smash singles ‘Sanctify’ and ‘If You’re Over Me’) is packed with snap, crackle and synth-pop; promising a real treat for ticketholders at the O2 Apollo on the 2nd December. 10.12.18

to turn the most virile man into a blubbering mess. 2018’s ‘Noonday Dream’ marks the release of his third album, and the Brit-award winner is fast-building an awesome catalogue of ambient folk tracks that poke and prod at the search for a bigger meaning – all of which are sure to send shivers through the spines of Manchester gig-goers in mid-December.

Few artists have managed to make loaded lyric books sound so sweet. Yet Lily Allen continues to mix ingredients that you wouldn’t think to throw together and come up with recipes for seriously tasty tracks; gleefully stirring provocative words into her syrupy singing with incredible aplomb. She strides into Albert Hall following the release of ‘No Shame’ – an album which signals a farewell to her party days and contains a raw reassessment of herself as both an artist and human being.

Gardening for Carl Barat, performing at Shane MacGowan’s 60th birthday party, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Sinéad O’Connor, supporting Patti Smith and gleaning advice from nonother than Bono; whenyoung are a band in good company. As Virgin EMI’s latest signees, the Limerick-born, London-living trio pen delightful guitar pop. Aoife Power fronts the band with her bass, Niall Burns adds glittering guitar and Andrew Flood carries out duties on drums; together they create a soaring but singalong take on musical anthemia. Aoife, Niall and Andrew met in their hometown of Limerick, Ireland where the trio’s friendship evolved during vodka-fuelled, late nights and over a mutual love of The Velvet Underground, The Strokes and The Ramones.

“We were all teenagers going to indie gigs that were going on in the venues in Limerick,” explains frontwoman Aoife. “We all bonded over the same type of music. Where we are from dance music is more popular, so finding people who liked guitar bands was rare.” 14

“Setting up a band was just something to do” Aoife Power

16

“We actually formed the band in London, even though we had all known each other and loved music together in Ireland. When we all moved to London setting up a band was just something to do.” “We really like living in the UK as we’ve had a lot of opportunities to play a million gigs and develop. Maybe we wouldn’t have had that opportunity in Limerick as I guess there are less venues and a lot less people [laughs].” Following a string of intriguing singles, the band released their EP ‘Given Up’ on the 9th November, which is pressed on 10’’ blue vinyl. Containing 4 solid tracks, the EP shows the real musical breadth of the band. The title track boasts bright chime-like guitars and thundering drums, ‘Heaven On Earth’ is strangely befitting of a Belle & Sebastian number, as a nod to their fellow Limerick-ians a charming cover of The Cranberries ‘Dreams’ also features and the surprisingly melancholic ‘Sleeper’ rounds things off. Aoife explains, “We chose to cover The Cranberries 17

‘Dreams’ as they are from the same city as us in Ireland.” “As Limerick is such a small place, they are our local heroes and when their vocalist Dolores died earlier this year - even though I’d never met her - it was a very sad moment and our city went into mourning. It felt like it would be a nice tribute to cover the song on our EP.” With ‘Given Up’ out in the ether we’re bloody glad the trio haven’t ‘Given Up’ and are currently in the studio penning their debut album. “It’s like day three in in the studio now and all I can say is there are lots of drums.”

“You can hopefully hear the debut early spring. I’m really hoping by March / April next year - that’s what we are aiming for. We’re just really excited to get it out.” To date, whenyoung have supported Patti Smith, Dream Wife, Declan McKenna, The Vaccines, and Peace and will be warming up Blossoms fans on their upcoming UK tour. “We’re nervous but also really excited. I can’t wait to see their shows as I’ve never seen them perform before and I’m sure their audiences will be amazing. It will be nice to support

such established musicians; it’ll be a great experience.”

Sharing a label with the likes of Bieber, Black Sabbath, Katy Perry, and Elton John is no mean feat.

Blossoms too signed to Virgin back in 2015, and just as Blossoms have bloomed from the pub of the same name in their hometown of Stockport to their upcoming headline show at the newly rebranded O2 Victoria Warehouse, whenyoung are poised to succeed under Virgin’s wings.

“The label are really into our message and style of music and it feels like a really good match.“

“We feel really privileged to share the Virgin EMI roster with such legendary artists, but it really doesn’t feel real. We’re still the babies on the roster so we still have to prove ourselves and work really hard.”

“We feel really privileged to share the Virgin EMI roster with legendary artists”

“It’s an amazing opportunity and we feel so privileged to now dedicate all of our time to music and record an album.“

It’s often said that succeeding in the industry is as much about what you know as who you know, so when The Pogues’ frontman Shane MacGowan asked whenyoung to perform at his 60th birthday party, the group jumped at the chance.

Aoife Power

“Until last December we were all working in London; Niall was in a bookshop, Andrew was managing a restaurant and I was working as a gardener. It was handy as we all had perks; we could get free food, get free books and I could trim a bush [laughs] but no joking aside it’s much better now we can just concentrate on our music full time.”

“It was incredible. range of amazing rubbed shoulders O’Connor, Shane Bobby Gillespie 18

he said that feeling never really goes away and you just have to concentrate on the music and that’s the most important thing.”

“It was really moving listening to them perform. They are really amazing artists and it was a privilege to be on the same stage as them and to hear all The Pogues songs live, which are just absolute bangers.”

“He seemed like a really nice guy and not what I expected as we all think he’s a different person than he probably is.” Whenyoung certainly seem to be moving in the right circles, and as a band with a lot more than just youth on their side, they are destined for good things.

At the event, Aoife even got chatting to Ireland’s most-loved villain. “I ended up talking with Bono for a few minutes, I have no idea how I started talking to him but I just did [laughs]. He was talking about the show and I told him I was really nervous, and
