Hello, 33 Oldham Street.
A former coffee shop in the NQ is currently being converted into a multi-purpose venue. Spanning over four floors, the latest addition to the scene will include a coffee shop, workspace, a ‘listening room’, lounge, bars, screening room and the largest roof terrace in the area.
The project is the brainchild of Kendal Calling Founder Andy Smith and Jason McGuire of Manchester Coffee and is expected to open its doors in late October. For more info follow @33OldhamStreet on Twitter.
The Fall on a Chippy Wall
A mural of Mark E Smith has been painted on a Prestwich chippy. ‘The Fall Wall’ is the work of graffiti artist Akse P19 and was created as part of the Prestwich Arts Festival. The 6-metre tall depiction commemorates The Fall frontman, who died in January at the age of 60.
Bugzy Malone to receive inaugural B. Inspired Award.
Grime artist and proud Mancunian Bugzy Malone will be recognised for his contribution to Manchester during the City of Champions Gala Dinner, held on the 1st November. Following the event, the Crumpsall creative will perform a one-off show at Mayfield on the 9th November.
In addition, 60 artists from across the world have been tasked with creating an original A3-sized artwork inspired by a single line of their favourite Mark E Smith lyric. Bury Art Museum will exhibit these images until the 24th November, admission is free of charge.
Tickets are on sale now.

One of Manchester’s most famous gig venues welcomes a suitably multitalented performer this October, with the Ivory Coast’s Afro-pop sensation Dobet Gnahoré bringing her percussion-filled party tracks to Swan Street. The elegant, grooving Grammy winner never fails to set the stage alight, and with the energetic Yemi Bolatiwa Trio in support, this show is all set to be

Phil France
YES | £14ADV | 7:30pm
Fresh from the release of his latest record ‘Circle’, Phil France brings his hazy, ambient sounds to the newest venue in his home city. Previously writing, producing and arranging for The Cinematic Orchestra, Manchester-based France is responsible for some of their most stunning work. Now he’s back with his second solo effort and it packs in more of that instantly recognisable and warming electronic goodness. After a spectacular low-key instore performance at Piccadilly Records back in September, his 10

The Homesick
YES | £7.50ADV | 7:30pm
Despite their chosen eponym, this musical trio from The Netherlands don’t look like they’re yearning to head back to their humble town of Dokkum anytime soon. On the contrary, the band have been reaching wider and further since their debut album ‘Youth Hunt’ turned heads in 2017, and they are officially one of the first groups to earn a spot on the bill at Manchester’s new four-storey gig venue YES. Atmospheric and affecting with a pinch of peculiarity about them, The Homesick are increasingly looking like one of those rare groups capable of leaving distinctive, permanent footprints on the world.
Khruangbin; a loose translation of the Thai word for ‘aeroplane’ - it’s fair to say that the Texas-trio will take you on a flight to remember with their distinctively elegant funk. Inspired by the best sounds from Spain all the way to the Middle East, their latest album ‘Con Todo El Mundo’ will have you floating in the clouds. After selling out the RNCM in February and leaving jaws flat to the floor in awe, we’re more than happy to be gifted another chance to get lost in Mark, Laura and Donald’s globetrotting tones. And you should be too.

KRS-One
Alt-J
An integral member of the old guard that forced hip-hop into the mainstream, KRS-One is widely considered one of the most influential figures in American rap music. Best known for his onomatopoeic smash hit ‘Sound of da Police’, the South Bronx artist has been penning combative, politically-charged rhymes for three decades. He also remains the go-to source for hip-hop historians, regularly appearing in documentaries to discuss the evolution of the genre. His upcoming set at Club Academy is a fantastic opportunity to see a real legend in action.
Fresh off the back of their experimental ‘Redduxer’ LP – a star-studded hip-hop rework of their ‘Relaxer’ album from 2017 – Alt-J land at the prestigious Bridgewater Hall this October to serve up a genre-spanning smorgasbord of live music. The Leeds University alumni met during their studies in Yorkshire, beginning as an indie band before diversifying into electro, folk and rap. Their three studio albums to date have experienced huge international success, and it’s clear that the group are becoming impossible to pigeonhole – with 12

Leon Bridges
Manchester Academy £20ADV | 7pm
Leon Bridges brings his slick, fingersnapping Deep South sound to Manchester in November – with the Academy all set to sway in unison to his modern spin on 50s/60s soul music. Melting hearts in 2015 with his gorgeous single ‘Coming Home’, Bridges has continued to write songs that function as fitting odes to a charming, romantic chapter in music history. The Texan released his latest album ‘Good Thing’ earlier this year to critical acclaim, and is sure to reel off the likes of ‘Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand’, ‘Bad Bad News’ and ‘Beyond’ during his UK shows.

both dyslexia and ADHD, Izzy is a huge advocate for self-expression without limit and has relied on her band – made up of drummer Tom Dewhurst, bassist Tom Taylor and guitarist Chris Ostler – to channel everything that comes from her obsessive and dizzyingly creative mind into their music.
October; the month that the leaves start to fall, the heating goes on, the clocks go back, all hallows eve takes place and Black Honey embark on their latest UK tour, the first since the release of their selftitled debut album.
Black Honey are just as their name suggests; a sweet Izzy explains, “I was nectar that lures you writing journals in and once the sugar because I suffered rush has died down from really bad their surprisingly mental health shadowy narratives issues as a young surface. As badass teenager and I was and beautiful fronttold that it would woman Izzy B. help with sleeping Phillips puts it, BH’s Izzy B Phillips and coping with music should be stuff. The journal listened to “on full blast in the back of a pink Cadillac, evolved and got exciting, songs crossing the border to Mexico.” and poems kind of came out of it and it evolved into my music.”
“I suffered from really bad mental health issues as a young teenager ”
It’s the weird and wonderful mind of Phillip’s that is very much at the heart of ‘Black Honey’. As the creative force behind the album her lovable but villainous, Milky-Barkid-meets-Debbie Harry persona is the trademark the group have patented. As an open sufferer of
After four years perfecting their craft on the DIY scene, the Brighton band have finally allowed us to delve into their honey-pot of a debut and the record acts as an ode to the scribblings in Izzy’s diary. Album opener ‘I Only Hurt 17
The Ones I Love’ “summarises all of our naughty, mischievous, badly behaved, debauchery that we feel we’re all about”, while Izzy’s “favourite track” ‘Blue Romance’ “is a kind of a Palm Springs, romantic, fucked up love song.” Intrigued much?
had growing up again to have the mind that I have, as my mind is a powerful and very valuable asset.” With a brain brimming full of ideas, Izzy and co have found it hard to shortlist their constantly evolving catalogue into a 12-strong album. “We could have put out a debut album like 4 times over now as we’ve got so many songs and I’ve just always thought I’ve got more to say.”
“I wou throug the cha I’ve growi again t the min hav
Blending the likes of pop, shoegaze and disco, Black Honey’s album hit the shelves towards the end of September. “It’s an eclectic mix of genre influences but it’s also underpinned with Black Honey DNA,” summarises fierce front-woman Izzy. “There’s some really mad stuff on it; we got a symphony orchestra on, guitar ballads and it’s up and down and changing just like my brain.”
With the exception of three tracks Izzy B P - 2016’s ‘Hello, Today’, 2017’s ‘Dig’ and 2018’s ‘Bad Friends’ - the album is made up of entirely new music with nine brand new songs on offer. “I get really bored by bands putting out records with songs I already know and what I expected them to release when they haven’t offered any fundamental change or solution in their sound or ideas. I just felt like I had so much to give, so
Chaotic yet melodic Izzy’s music is a delightful symptom of her disposition. “If I had it [ADHD] or not I feel I’m a very creative person. I do know that my brain is wired differently to a normal person, I see things in a backwards way but in a way where it works for me. I wouldn’t change myself, I would go through all of the challenges I’ve 18
something kind of happened after the Royal Blood tour and I thought now is the right time.” Self-released, it’s clear that BH doesn’t want to relinquish their creative control and are happy to go it alone, without the backing of a label. “We had a few offers but nothing was nowhere near as inspiring as doing it ourselves and licensing it to

people who we have found to be super passionate.” “It’s not the story where every major label offered us a deal and we turned them all down to stay independent, it was more of a case that no one was passionate enough for it or for us. It didn’t feel like anyone had the astuteness, priority narrative that we wanted. There’s no way I’m going sign to a major label unless we are a priority artist because you are just going to fall down the track that most bands go down.”
During a time of year when we’re all too happy to hibernate, it’s worth following the squalling guitars, vivid colours and cinematic vignettes on Black Honey’s “official biggest UK headline tour to date”.
From the wonderfully cinematic storytelling in their videos to their diverse range of merch, Black Honey do things their own way. “[I find the visual side of things] so easy, writing songs is really hard. Everyone is always like your art direction is really good and you make all these sick videos and I say - it’s writing the song that’s the hard bit.”
“I won’t be giving a shit. I just want to lose it and let go. I just mainly want to be a weirdo on a stage that people can relate to. You can expect lots of songs from the new album, singing along, screaming, crowd surfing, badly behaved antics, drinking, partying and let’s all just get lost in ourselves.”
“The visuals and aesthetic are so easy because I see in my head when I’m writing a song. When I wrote ‘Midnight’ I had Saturday Night Fever in my head and I just thought I’m going to write a story around Saturday Night Fever.”
Catch Black Honey on the 21st October at Manchester Academy.

Top 10 Acts to Catch at Off The Record 2018 After two sell-out years Off The Record, the live music festival and conference, returns to Manchester on 15th and 16th November. Expect unmissable talks from industry insiders and even a songwriting masterclass from Manchester favourites Doves during the day. By night, 40 of the hottest emerging acts will be unleashed upon eight iconic Northern Quarter venues. All the artists are unsigned and they’ve been handpicked by trusted curators including Everything Everything, DJs from the BBC, Radio X and many other experts. Here we give you the heads up on our absolute faves.
30
Mary Miller
Indie // Electro – AATMA
With just a guitar and a sampler, it’s hard to comprehend how Mary Miller creates a beautiful fusion of dreamy retro pop and trip-hop. The Liverpool-based singer, songwriter and producer was selected by Re:Balance who work to ensure that female artists are well-represented in the industry. We thank them for bringing Miller’s smooth sounds to Manchester.
The Old Pink House
Alternative Indie - Night & Day
Inspired by modern psychedelia, The Old Pink House are known for their high-energy live performances and infectious melodies. They’ve supported the likes of The Amazons and The Sherlocks and have been selected to play by both The Tipping Point and When In Manchester. Fancy a warm-up show? Catch the Newcastle band at the Soup Kitchen on the 23rd October.
Lady Ice
Hip-Hop // Rap - The Peer Hat
If you were on a tram on BBC Music Day last month and you saw someone rapping in a mermaid-style dress, you were probably sharing a carriage with Lady Ice. The Mancunian is known for her witty wordplay and rapid flow and you may have heard her on 1xtra, Capital and more. Tipped by BBC Introducing Manchester, this’ll be a lively one.
31
See Thru Hands
Funk // Pop – Band On The Wall
The Ninth Wave
Mercury-nominated Everything Everything have curated their own stage of acts that they love for this year's festival, including Mancunian band See Thru Hands. Not bad for a six-piece that only formed months ago. Expect a versatile mix of shrewd pop and borderline funk at the latest venue to be added to the Off The Record roster.
Alternative Rock – Soup Kitchen Bringing a pulsing power pop sound and a fully immersive live show to the festival are The Ninth Wave. They’ve already blown away unsuspecting audiences on their support slots for the likes of Editors, Blaenavon, Honeyblood and The Magic Gang. Kali Bradford of Distiller TV has invited the Glaswegian four-piece to do more of the same at the Soup Kitchen.
Wooze
Alternative Pop – Night & Day
A Korean/British duo who wrote their early material in a disused builder’s depot and shot their debut video in Seoul with a K-Pop director that one half of the band met on Tinder. Yeah, we’re pretty intrigued too. Adding to Wooze’s appeal is the fact that Radio X’s John Kennedy has picked them to play.
Kinkajous
Jazz // Electronica – The Castle
Having graced the Manchester Jazz Festival in August, Kinkajous are back in town and they’re the pick of curator Dan Parrott of Low Four Studio. The Londonbased quintet boasts a powerful mix of jazz and synth and have gained deserved support from Gilles Peterson and Jamie Cullum amongst many others.
32
Medikul
Dance // Electronic – Jimmy’s
Producer Medikul expertly blurs the lines between drum and bass, modern hip-hop, jazz and soul to create uncut beats and rhythms. The producer from Nottingham released his first EP via his own record label and its tastemaker Tom Ravenscroft of BBC Radio 6 Music who has selected Medikul to play. High praise in itself.
Debra Ohalete
Soul // Hip-Hop - Gullivers
Fusing her soulful voice with elements of trap over hip-hop and jazz beats, Debra Ohalete began to produce and release her own music on Soundcloud back in 2014. She’s performed around the UK with the likes of Seun Kuti and African Boy and the vocalist and writer has been selected by curators Horus Music to take part in Off The Record at Gullivers.
Olivia Nelson R&B - Jimmy’s
Selected by Radio 1’s Abbie McCarthy, Olivia Nelson’s emotional modern R&B tells tales of love and heartbreak. Don't let your tears drown out her stunning voice on the night though, it's well worth hearing. Inspired by everything from Whitney Houston to The Chi-lites, 22 year-old Nelson has clocked up over 10 million streams on Spotify. Whitney would be proud.

one to watch: Sam Evian Promotors Now Wave - AKA Wes Jones and John Wickstead - have recently teamed up with Ruth Hemmingfield to bring the newest, coolest and most perfectly pink venue to Manchester’s musical landscape. Now they share their ‘One To Watch’.
takes your hand as you travel alongside him upon his selfreflective journey through the record.
Sam Evian is the moniker of Sam Owens, who is bringing his third album ‘You, Forever’ to YES on Friday 19th October.
Producer and sound engineer by trade, it is no surprise the production standard in Owen’s music is exquisite, which translates in live performances.
Released on Saddle Creek records shortly after Owens and his band opened Strange Waves II, playing alongside Boy Azooga, The Black Lips, Deerhunter and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Sam Evian’s third full-length LP earnestly and languorously, explores the principle of accepting responsibility for one’s actions and decisions in the mysterious journey of life.
‘You, Forever’ was conceived on a Tascam four-track at Owens’ parent’s house in North Carolina. Brought to life on an 8-track reel to reel, this limiting but organic recording process evolved the songs into the perfect soundtrack for a walk in the sun, a drive with friends and contemplating the capricious notion of self.
Lyrically soul-baring, and musically silky and psychedelic, Owens 52
