Say ‘YES’ to 5,000 free drinks and free pizza!

Local promoters Now Wave will mark a decade of promoting shows in Manchester by opening their very own music venue ‘YES’ and invite you to join in on the celebrations with free beer, pizza, guest DJ’s and of course live music. The weekend-long party takes place from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd September at Now Wave’s new home on Charles Street. For more information and the weekend’s full line-up check out @yes_mcr on Insta.

Academy Music Group take over Victoria Warehouse

The award-winning live entertainment company behind the O2 Ritz and the O2 Apollo Manchester have extended their property portfolio in the city by taking over the 3,500 capacity venue and rebranding it to the O2 Victoria Warehouse.

Urban music venue rebrands to The Manchester Lounge

With a new name and an unrecognisable facelift, things are changing at Manchester’s longest established urban venue. As the former home of Lounge31, Aura and The Lounge the underground venue on the cusp of the Northern Quarter promises urban, RnB, afrobeat and bashment live shows and club nights. See you on the dancefloor!

Great news for O2 customers as they can now access tickets for gigs at the venue 48 hours before they go on general release, including the recently announced Wolf Alice show celebrating the band’s Mercuryshortlisted album ‘Visions Of A Life’ on the 18th December. Follow @O2VicWarehouse on Twitter to find out more.

WHY?

month

Club Academy | £20ADV | 7pm

Yoni Wolf and his colleagues in American group WHY? don’t believe in sticking to music genres. The four guys from California mix hiphop with alternative rock fearlessly creating a bizarrely melancholic sound. To celebrate 10 years since its release WHY? will storm through tracks from their second studio album ‘Alopecia’. Witness WHY?’s genre-bending abilities at this sophomore showcase.

Murs

Band On The Wall £13ADV | 7pm

Los Angeles-born independent rapper Murs is coming to town, bringing along what he describes as his “most personal album ever”. Throughout ‘A Strange Journey Into The Unimaginable’ - released in March 2018 - the 40-year-old thematises selfdoubts, depression, and resilience. However, Murs manages to delicately place these meaty topics in light-weight packaging. Acoustic guitars and flowing beats help to deliver an overall positive vibe. The Californian also brings plenty of 10

Gryffin

The Deaf Institute £10ADV | 7pm

Dan Griffith learned to play guitar and piano when he was just a young boy, and now he is one of the lucky ones whose talent has tipped him into the professional sphere. Under the pseudonym Gryffin, the DJ tours nightclubs and dance festivals all over the world with his melodic house music. He’s remixed tracks for the likes of Years & Years, Tove Lo, and Maroon 5, into catchy, light and - of course danceable new forms. But his real signature style is on stage where he incorporates live guitar and piano chords into his sets. Even if house music isn’t your thing, we’re sure you’ll appreciate this.

nominated singer-songwriter has just released her much awaited third studio album ’Hunter’. The feverish first single ’Don’t Beat The Girl Out Of My Boy’ is a taster of what’s to come on the album, which delves into themes of attraction, sexual freedom and gender identity. Let Anna Calvi and her strumming Fender Telecaster cover you under a warm, velvety blanket of sound.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble Gorilla | £13ADV | 7:30pm

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a proper family affair: the group is formed by eight brothers, all sons of jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran. Playing trumpets, trombones and a baritone horn the ’Bad Boys of Jazz’ blend classic New Orleans big-band style with modern funk and hip-hop elements. With this unique genre mix the band from Chicago, who have collaborated with the likes of Snoop Dogg, WuTang Clan and Gorillaz, are sure to make crowds sweat on the dance floor.

06.10.18

Neighbourhood Festival Various | £25ADV | 12pm

05.10.18

Showcasing the best in emerging artists, alongside appearances from established acts like Sundara Karma and headliners Everything Everything, our friendly Neighbourhood Festival returns to Manchester city centre this October. If you’re already a fan of Aquilo, check out Stereo Honey, and if you’re into heavier indie-rock The Pale White might suit you just nicely. Plus if you fancy a warm-up ahead of the day, Rae Morris will be performing a one-off show at the Neighbourhood Festival Launch Party on Friday 5th at the Ritz.

The Wedding Present Manchester Academy 2 £20ADV | 7:30pm

Indie band The Wedding Present from Leeds are cult. Or rather David Gedge is. Being the only constant member since their formation more than 30 years ago, the Yorkshire frontman basically is The Wedding Present. However, fans from the old days don’t have to worry. Thanks to Gedge’s significantly raw singing and the typical flippant rhythmic guitar elements the “Weddoes” still sound like it’s 1985. 12

elements, which made them so popular in the first place. This show should be a lot of fun.

13.10.18

The Coral

Albert Hall | £23.50ADV | 7pm

16.10.18

When The Coral released their first LP in the early 2000’s they were pretty much a group of kids making music. No worries, just a lot of fun. Almost 20 years later the kids have certainly grown up and so has their sound. ‘Move Through The Dawn’ is the ninth album from the six lads from Hoylake, Merseyside, and it presents a more mature, more streamlined sound than ever. However, The Coral have managed to hold on to those certain carefree

Jack Conman

Jimmy’s | £3ADV | 7:30pm

Jacks 8-single ‘Heddison EP’ of modern folk has secured him slots at Radio 1’s Big weekend and airtime on both BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music. His intricate hands are laid bare with his acoustic guitar and his sorrowful vocals, which are sure silence the room at Jimmy’s and leave you with goose-bumps.

‘My Mind Makes Noises’; a fourword phrase inked across Ciara Doran’s right arm, the lyrics from a line in the band’s song ‘Noises’. But now the four-word is more of a forward, an opener, a taster of what’s to come, and a phrase that is more than a lyric, more than a tattoo - it’s the title to Pale Waves’ upcoming debut album. Since Pale Waves’ formation in 2014, and a brief spell under

the name of Creek, leading lady Heather Baron-Gracie and her right-hand woman Ciara Doran have risen from relative obscurity to total obsession. Adding kindred spirits Hugo Silvani and Charlie Wood to the Pale Waves fold, the band uploaded their first songs in 2015 and were since spotted by promoters SJM, which led to a slot on an XFM-sponsored showcase night,

a flurry of radio play and a deal with Dirty Hit records. Finding a home with the likes of Wolf Alice and The 1975 and a friend in frontman Matty Healy, who’s since co-produced some of the band’s music and even directed the video for Top 5 hit ‘Television Romance’. 2018 kicked off with a Top 5 place in the BBC Sound of 2018 poll, securing a bounty of bookings on the summer festival circuit. Frontwoman Heather enthuses, “That was a big moment for us because it’s such an honour to just be suggested never mind be placed in the Top 5! So it was definitely a big, big moment for us and were very thankful for the opportunity.”

On the cusp of releasing their debut album, the former BIMM students are at a transformative time in their lives. Heather explains, “People were demanding the album after our first song ‘There’s A Honey’. Fans were also screaming “where is the full album?” so I feel there’s a lot of people who are waiting and anticipating the album. I just want it to be what people hoped for and more.” To coincide with the album release on the 14th September, the band will embark on a mammoth UK tour. Heather discloses, “You can expect new songs that we’ve never played before, we’re also going to throw in a few surprises but I

can’t give it away just yet [laughs]. We’re just going to give it our all for our biggest shows to date.”

In support of the album Heather and co, will sign copies and perform an intimate gig at HMV in the Arndale. “I’ve shopped there loads of times and it’s really exciting as we’ve seen lots of artists doing signings and the queues of people. I’ve always dreamt one day that that will hopefully be us and now we’re actually bloody doing it!”

The run includes a date at our very own O2 Ritz. “Me and Ciara have been to so many shows there and both of us adore that venue and for us to be able to play it is just crazy. We’ve been there so many times as a punter watching other bands and I’ve Right now Pale always thought this Waves are making is such an iconic and waves and Heather massive venue. I’ve says the best part is imagined playing it that “You get to see one day and now it’s the world with your Heather Baron-Gracie best friends and actually happening. I feel really, really it’s just everything excited.” we’ve ever wanted it to be and we’ve finally got it now.”

“Manchester will definitely always, always have our hearts”

“I’ve had so many amazing experiences in Manchester and I’ve met so many amazing people and that’s where we started Pale Waves and that’s where we played all of our first shows. So Manchester will definitely always, always have our hearts.”

Personally we can’t wait to hear more from the minds that make noises. If you feel the same, grab your fishnets and creepers, and catch Pale Waves on the 28th September at the O2 Ritz.
