Dave Haslam Book Event 22.05.18 | Gorilla | £8ADV Former Haçienda resident DJ Dave Haslam will be signing copies of his latest book entitled ‘Sonic Youth Slept On My Floor; Music, Manchester & More’ at Gorilla this May. Broadcaster Stuart Macoine will interview Dave about the memoir of his life and work - which includes encounters with Tony Wilson, Nile Rodgers, Terry Hall, Neneh Cherry, John Peel, Ian Brown, and more - before the book signing commences.

Antwerp Mansion threated with closure. The Rusholme favourite has been issued with a closure notice from Manchester City Council. Loyal clubbers have started a petition on Change.org in a bid to save the beloved venue and over 17,500 people have signed it to date. Will Antwerp join Sankeys and Sound Control in the big nightclub in the sky? Let’s hope not!

‘I Should Be So Lucky’ Tickets for Kylie Minogue’s intimate 650 capacity show at Gorilla sold-out in a staggering four minutes and were resold on secondary ticket sites for an eyewatering £17,000!

The Pharcyde’s debut album ‘Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde’ made this ‘90s crew one of the most dividing forces in hip-hop. As political and thought-provoking as it is infectious and fun, the 1992 album brought jazz and soul influences to a scene dominated at the time by aggression-filled gangster rap. Original members Fatlip and Slimkid3, as well as producers J-Swift and LA Jay celebrate the 25th Anniversary of this era-defining LP by performing the entire thing from start to finish.

anticipated latest album, ‘Marble Skies’, released in January this year. Praised by The Guardian as “winningly eclectic”, the record confidently flies in the face of the curse of the “tricky third album” and retains the band’s signature jammy dreamy psych-rock infused dancepop formula, with a little bit - but not too much more - polish. 22.03.18

Jessie Ware

Enigmatic French producer Carpenter Brut, real name Franck Hueso (but that’s all the information you’ll glean on him), broke onto the international music scene in 2015 with his trailblazing LP ‘Trilogy’ that attracted fans of his unique genre from both sides of the Atlantic. Merging horror film, heavy metal and electronic music sounds, his ominous “dark synth” soundscapes have been celebrated by several video game makers and will have F-Zero X fans dusting off their N64s.

O2 Apollo | £27.50ADV | 7pm After bringing in the New Year with Jools Holland, releasing her third album, ‘Glasshouse’, and bagging a BRIT nomination, it seems 2018 is the year that South Londoner queen-of-cool Jessie Ware is finally ready to go mainstream. Her minimalist take on melodic electronica has kept her something of a best-kept secret until now - but not anymore, thanks to a new divaesque direction and an Ed Sheeran collab to boot.

Tom Walker

The Eagle Inn | £7ADV | 7:30pm

Gorilla | £11.50ADV | 7pm

Singer-songwriter Brigid Mae Power was born in London, raised in Galway, and has spent time living in New York. Add into the mix of influences a number of retrofolk artists including the likes of Joni Mitchell, John Fahey and PJ Harvey, and you’ll get a feel for what to expect from her sound. Her heartfelt Celtic-folk undertones, topped with poignant and often personal lyrics are tempered with a touch of NYC cool - and the result is totally hypnotic.

Just over two months after Manchester-based musician Tom Walker bought his ticket for Glastonbury last year, he found himself being added to the line-up - despite not having any crew and having to cart his own tech to and from his performance. Featured in BBC’s ‘Sound Of 2018’, and dubbed by GQ as “your new favourite singer”, the gravel-voiced singersongwriter’s blend of soul, pop and reggae has seen him rack up over five and a half million monthly 12

listeners on Spotify, and you’ll recognise Radio 1 regular ‘Leave A Light On’.

Souls have been soundtracking the ups and downs of melancholic millennials with their upbeat alternative rock and shout-folk riffs since 2001. With an eighth studio album, ‘Be More Kind’ - spurred by the political state of the world and its rapidly changing cultural climate - due for release later this year, this show promises to be one of an intimate warm-up run before a busy year ahead for the band.

The Tokyo-made trio have already gained a healthy cult-following with their output that combines elements of German krautrock, classic Indian raga, motorik grooves and seemingly endless jams. 13.04.18

“And now I’m gonna sing my new album” - plucky words spoken by a determined four-year-old Declan McKenna disclosed in the opening of his debut album ‘What Do You Think About The Car?’.

His debut single ‘Brazil’ - a critique of FIFA’s decision to award the FIFA World Cup to Brazil - started life as a GCSE Music composition project, which he later self-released.

“I sort of just put it out there and pushed it as much as I could and after one single managed to get signed and stuff, so that was cool. But yeah, I never anticipated anything to happen, I saw my self initially going to school, and uni and stuff and [my music career] kinda kicked off a lot quicker than I ever anticipated really.”

Fast forward 15 years and that same self-assured Declan has realised his own aspirations; dominating airwaves, both here and across the pond, with his bright and eclectic debut. Declan has been described by many as the poster-boy of a postmillennial generation - AKA Generation Z – a self-made generation of tech-tuned bloggers and You-Tubers that grew up with the internet at their fingertips and the world at their feet.

Now signed to Columbia Records, Declan has ditched the essays, assignments, and exams in favour of performing at festivals like Glastonbury and Coachella, touring the world, and pencilling epic pop bangers. “Initially it didn’t really pick up too quickly. Then all of a sudden once American radio had started

picking up ‘Brazil’ and it started getting played everywhere then it was like ‘Okay, I’m going to America to promote my single’ and all these radio stations that I had never heard of in America are playing the song, there were people who wanted to see shows and that was when it got kinda real.” “I was doing all sorts really that I’d never imagined myself doing for years and years. Yeah, it was a pretty dramatic change initially and since then it’s kinda kept moving forward, kept rolling.”

one song as opposed to just the self, the I, sort of thing.” “I like making pop tunes and if the lyrics are dark but it sounds happy that’s kinda what I like doing. Like ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’ - the lyrics are bit dark you know? “Bang! Bang! Maxwell’s silver hammer. Came down upon her head” but the sort of jolly tone to it makes it a bit eerie and childlike and it kinda adds to the darkness, without being overbearing. I think you can collide the different ideas and make them make a lot of sense.”

“ I think storytelling has always been part of the power of songs” Declan McKenna

Perhaps the key to Declan’s overnight success lies in his thoughtprovoking and astute songwriting? Penning songs that speak of and confront LGBT issues, the media and politics, providing insight into stories of the zeitgeist that speak to the generation he represents. “I think storytelling has always been part of the power of songs. I like literature, I like writing and I like making things up. It allows you to put different context and different perspectives within

The lyrics may be laced with political anecdotes and tragic tales, but Declan’s songs are always grounded with those playful pop hooks and dance-worthy beats. “I tend to start most songs with some melody aspect, whether that’s got lyrics attached to it, I dunno? Occasionally I come up with lyrics and that will start an idea, but I kinda think what do I love about music? What’s gonna make a good song? And it’s always melody with lyrics attached to it.” 19

Currently on a huge tour in America, “I think the more I perform, the more a land that has been incredibly I want to have an identity to myself receptive to his music, Declan as a performer. And I just kinda like will join us back in the UK for two wearing glitter, I like wearing makesold-out shows – one in London’s up, you know? It’s stuff I’d probably Kentish Town Forum and another do anyway to some degree. I think in our very own Manchester as a performer it kinda gives a Academy on Friday 6th April 2018. dress code subtly to the people Declan enthused, “It’s gonna be coming to the gigs. It’s cool, it’s our biggest headline gig ever, something I really enjoy doing and so it’s gonna be great. It’s gonna I think it adds another element to have a whole the performance, new production, which is often we’re working on overlooked in a new set, there’s guitar music.” gonna be a new song played that Fast forward to we’ve never really the summer and played before, you can catch there’s gonna be Declan and his Declan McKenna a new backdrop, band at the likes new lighting of Kendal Calling, display, new everything really, Neverworld, TRNSMT, Coachella, which is all really exciting.” Boardmasters, and Camp Bestival. “I’m looking forward to Coachella, “It’s kinda like the final headline obviously that’s gonna be a big shows of this act, so I want them one. Yeah, there’s a be in the grandest way possible.” fair few festivals that we’re doing and it’s looking really exciting.” Declan’s playful wardrobe is also a note-worthy factor within his With such thematic lyrics, on-stage persona, pairing simple competent composition, and white jeans or dungarees with confident stage presence, it’s cartoon t-shirts, retro sportswear, easy to forget that Declan and battle worthy warrior paint. is still just 19 years of age.

other is an important thing. Be what you wanna be and do what you wanna do for the world. I think just supporting your friends on a ground roots level is super important and sticking by the people you trust.”

Upon asking how he thinks his music will progress into his twenties, Declan expressed, “I dunno - I think that’s what’s quite exciting about it! I don’t really have a plan for how the album after the next is gonna sound and how my music will change.“

And what nugget of advice would the now famed Declan McKenna give to his fouryear-old self? “Erm I dunno I’d probably say that the big man dressed as a spider in Fuerteventura isn’t gonna do you any harm. [Laughs]” Declan McKenna

“I think I’m still very willing to experiment, I think I’m definitely, at this point in time, stepping away from the indie bracket, because I’ve not made anything in that style that’s excited me and I haven’t felt that that sort of sound and scene has been as progressive as others. So I think I’m going to delve more into the classic pop that I love and some more progressive stuff as well but where it is all going I dunno?”

“ The big man dressed as a spider in Fuerteventura isn’t gonna do you any harm”

It’s incredible how a casual and innocent exchange of words between a four-year-old boy and his sister in the back of their parent’s new car can provide a glimpse (even if only in hindsight) into a now teenage prodigy’s future. As for being a role model for ‘Generation Z’ I think this same exchange, and perhaps the most compelling of stories on his debut, gives hope that with hard work and determination anything is possible.

Rounding off our time with Declan we asked the eccentric yet relatable teen what advice he would offer to his fellow Generation Z-ers and he said, “I think to support each 23

The Eagle Inn

The Star and Garter

Satans Hollow

Guillvers

Satans Hollow is a metal heads heaven (or hell as it may be?). Expect loud music, moshing, sweating, and a bare-bones drinks selection. It’s a little bit themeparky with its mock graveyard and a huge devil hanging above the DJ booth, but they do put on some cracking shows, club nights, and after-parties.

As a sister venue to The Castle Hotel and The Eagle Inn, this pub-comemusic-venue has laid claim to this site since the mid-1800’s and retains many of its original features. There’s “no pretensions and no gimmicks” as local promoters take over the 2nd floor and fill it with decent up-and-coming acts.

Factory The Castle Hotel

Where: 66 Oldham St, Manchester, M4 1LE Capacity: 70 Price: £ Check Out: Port Cities | 25.03.18 | £8ADV | 6:30pm

Where: 118 Princess St, Manchester, M1 7EN Capacity: 950 Price: £ Check Out: Crazytown | 21.04.18 | £14ADV | 7pm Factory - AKA FAC251 – is based in the original headquarters of the infamous ‘Madchester’ record label. Co-owned by New Order and Joy Division’s Peter Hook and established club operators Tokyo Industries, the venue is now a favourite among students seeking out cheap drinks and great tunes.

Soup Kitchen

Where: 31-33 Spear St, Manchester, M1 1DF Capacity: 175-200 Price: £ Check Out: Banfi | 20.03.18 | £8ADV | 7pm Frequented by the likes of Johnny Marr, Soup Kitchen has an avid following, and it’s easy to see why. By day the venue is a canteen serving up wholesome and hearty food on communal style benches, but as the night falls it takes on a new persona. Crowds cram in to catch a glimpse of acts including Bipolar Sunshine, Circa Waves and Peace who begun their careers in the places like these. My only tip would be to bring your own loo roll as the toilets are pretty dank.

Albert Hall

Where: 27 Peter St, Manchester, M2 5QR Capacity: 2,290 (seated) Price: £££ Check Out: The Hunna | 29.05.18 | £35ADV | 7pm This Grade II listed Wesleyan chapel lay abandoned for over 40 years and was only recently resurrected by Trof - the people behind Gorilla and The Deaf Institute - as an events venue, restaurant and bar. The grand and ornate chapel was restored into a stunning purposebuilt music hall and over the past 4 years has played host to the likes of Belle and Sebastian, Chvrches, Sam Smith, Public Service Broadcasting, Primal Scream, James Bay and many more. 31

one to watch: Halo Maud

Jason Boardman co-owner of Manchester’s downtempo vinylonly record label Aficionado Recordings and Sales Representative for Ticketweb/ Ticketmaster in the North is renowned for his open ear’s and equally open mind.

Maud is the epitome of relaxed French cool and I (along with many others) was completely captivated by her live performance that evening. She radiates stage presence, her vocal style vaguely reference’s Bjork or even Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays to my old ears and there’s a nod to Broadcast and a distinct Gallic flavour in the production and arrangement.

One of the best things in my day to day existence is that I get exposed to a wide range of music through my job and industry contacts. My mate Jeff invited me to see Baxter Dury at Gorilla on the proviso we had a beer first and I checked out the support band Halo Maud who had recently signed to his record label Heavenly Recordings.

Halo Maud release their debut LP ‘Je Suis Une île’ at the end of May, it’s a classic and on repeat at Boardman Towers. It’s a very assured debut which will no doubt be competing with Whyte Horses ‘Empty Words’ as the finest modern psychedelic pop album of 2018 in the end of year lists.

I readily accepted, acutely aware of the labels innate ability to consistently unearth quality leftfield pop artists and in progressive psychedelic French pop band Halo Maud they have discovered yet another absolute gem.
