Welcome Welcome to the February 2015 edition of the Castle Point Local Business Guide. As we head towards Valentine’s Day on 14th February, our article on page 6 gives you some great ideas of something a little different to do with your loved one this year. We also have our regular ‘What’s on in Castle Point’ on pages 16 and 17 where we feature a Roundhouse open afternoon at Hadleigh Country Park, Pirates Week at Marsh Farm, a Pancake Morning, microchipping for cats and a concert with the Southend Symphony Orchestra. In our regular community feature on the Acres Way Kennels, based in Castle Point (pages 10-11), we are pleased that Theo the Boxer, Misty the Blue Staff and Billy the Lurcher that we featured in our last issue have been successfully re-homed. We have 3 new dogs that are all looking for new loving homes. We have a feature on local charity ‘Peaceful Place’ (page 14), an article about the history of Hadleigh Farm (page 29) and a look at the history of Valentine’s Day (page 30). We also have our regular column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers (centre pages). If you have any interesting stories about Castle Point or if you are a local team, association or charity that would like to be featured in any future editions of the Local Business Guide then please drop us a line at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk If you would like to advertise in any of our Guides please contact Ricky on 01375 402546 and with prices starting from as little as £45 it is a really cost effective way of promoting and generating business from your local community.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey
Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Working for the Community
Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the
home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Theo the Boxer, Misty the Blue Staff and Billy the Lurcher that we featured in our last issue have been successfully re-homed. They are settling well into their new families.

Money Guidance New Pension Rules T
he incredible new rules have now been confirmed and have turned pensions into the most flexible & tax efficient savings plans, given that your contributions to a pension receive tax relief and then grow virtually tax free over the years. There is now no limit on the amount you can take from your pension (currently from age 55). If you wish to enjoy it over the early years of retirement that will be your choice. If you would rather invest it to make a sustainable income, or any combination of income and lump sum withdrawals then again, the choice is yours. There are two new ways to facilitate this:
Flexi Access Drawdown This allows you to take up to 25% tax free lump sum, the balance of your pension fund is then invested in a Flexi Access Drawdown. From the invested fund you are free to take withdrawals of any amount at any time. This could be as regular monthly payments to meet your living expenses or one off withdrawals to fund things like holidays or new cars, but beware anything above the 25% will be taxed as income, so any ideas you have about ‘spending’ your pension fund should be very carefully considered. The media have been talking about withdrawing your fund to buy rental property. This makes little sense to us - why would you move a now highly ‘liquid’ tax exempt fund into a very ‘illiquid’ taxable asset?
Uncrystallised Funds Pension Lump Sum (UFPLS) This options allows a lump sum of any amount to be taken from uncrystallised funds (funds from which benefits have not yet been taken) , and leaves the remaining funds invested and in the pension. 18
These lump sums are paid as 25% tax free/75% taxed as income. For those not requiring their tax free lump sum upfront, this is likely to be the most tax efficient method of receiving retirement income – 25% less income tax than would otherwise be the case.
Death Benefits The new rules provide unparalleled opportunity to pass on wealth, free of tax. Previously once ‘crystallised’ the only way your fund could pass to someone other than your spouse was after a 55% tax charge. It is now possible to pass your pension fund on death without tax. If you die before 75 your beneficiaries will pay no tax at all, after 75 the fund is tax free but any withdrawals your beneficiaries make are taxed as income at their rate of tax. All the old objections to pensions have been swept away. You must consider maximising contributions to pensions during your working life. The tax efficiencies are enormous. Equally you must get advice on the best way to withdraw your pension or it will be too easy to run out of money or pay far too much tax in retirement. As experienced and qualified pension and retirement advisers we would of course be happy to help.

This involved people from what he referred to as the, “submerged tenth” being helped and in some cases rescued by Salvationists. His vision was that the poor would be given board and lodgings in a City Colony in exchange for a day’s work. They could then move to a Farm Colony where they would be trained to work the land and run their own smallholdings. Then finally they could progress to Overseas Colonies, running smallholdings abroad. The trial City Colony was set up in Whitechapel in 1889 and two years later Booth put down a deposit on land in Hadleigh for his Farm Colony. Starting with 800 acres (3.2 km2) of land, later expanding to 3,200 acres (13 km2), the farm was home to 200 colonists by the end of its first year. Existing farm buildings were renovated and new dormitories, a bathhouse, laundry, reading room, hospital and religious meeting house were built. As well as farming and market gardening, colonists were taught brickmaking, pottery and construction skills. With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 the British government agreed to look after a number of Basque refugee children. Some of these children ended up under the Salvation Army’s care in East London and at Hadleigh. In 1939 the farm also provided accommodation for nearly 70 Jewish refugees fleeing
28
persecution in Germany and Eastern Europe. Today the colony operates an employment training centre for people who have special training needs, and accepts referrals from Social Services and the Employment Service. The aim is to create a realistic working environment, with the intention of helping clients gain the skills necessary for work elsewhere. Employment at the training centre – reminiscent of the colony’s origins - includes horticulture, carpentry, catering, office skills and estate management.

Valentine’s Day We often hear people complaining that Valentine’s Day is all just commercial nonsense. However, it’s history goes right back to Ancient Rome so here we take a look at where our customs on this day of romance originate from. person you saw on Valentine’s Day would be your true love forever. There is some dispute as to who St Valentine actually was. There have been at least two and possibly even three St Valentines that have been supposedly martyred on 14th February in different years. Our St Valentine was most probably a third century Roman priest who practised Christianity and performed secret marriages against the direct orders of Emperor Claudius II who thought that single men would be more likely to join his army.
V
alentine’s Day seems to have it’s beginnings way back in Ancient Rome. The Romans loved a party and their annual spring festival - Lupercalia - celebrated fertility and purification rites. It took place on 15th February and included, amongst other things, loud music and near naked youths running through the streets striking women with strips of goatskin. Somewhere around the 4th Century, members of the Christian Church decided that these pagan ceremonies were a little too...er… bawdy, so they initiated the festival of St Valentine’s Day on February 14th. However, in spite of the Church’s best efforts, the pagan customs continued to flourish throughout the centuries. In the 13th Century single women could be “won” in a Valentine lottery. These lotteries continued until way into the 19th Century and even when the tradition ceased, there remained the belief that the first 30
Legend has it that Valentine was arrested and thrown into prison. While he was incarcerated, he befriended the jailers daughter and before he went to execution, he sent her a note signed simply “From Your Valentine.” The first ever valentine card is accredited to Charles Duc D’Orleans who used to send his wife amorous poems and declarations of love from the Tower of London where he was imprisoned after the Battle if Agincourt in 1415. He called them Valentiens. The first modern cards appeared in the 16th Century and were very elaborate, hand made affairs. Red roses have become a symbol of St Valentine’s Day. They have symbolised both heavenly perfection and earthly passion since ancient times. They were first given as a token of love as recently as the 18th Century in imitation of Louis XVI’s romantic gifts to his queen - Marie Antoinette.
