Welcome A warm welcome to the June 2018 edition of the Castle Point Local Business Guide. Recently the weather has been better and more in tune with Spring. This month we feature some of Essex’s lovely farms for you and your family to visit in our article on page 6. In our regular ‘What’s On in Castle Point’ on pages 16 and 17 we feature a Summer Concert, a charity Coffee Morning, a concert by the Southend Symphony Orchestra, a Chess club, the AbbaGirls and the Hadleigh Summer Gardening Show. Plenty for everyone to enjoy! In our regular Acres Way feature (pages 10 and 11), we are really pleased that both Daisy the Staffie and Bluebell the Lurcher type that we featured last time have now found new loving homes! Unfortunately, Jerry the Labrador is still currently at Acres Way awaiting a new home, so we are featuring him again this month, along with 2 new dogs needing new homes. Within our Community section this month we focus in on local charities – the Art Ministry (page 18), the Peaceful Place (page 24) and free local Computer training being offered by local charity CAVS (page 8). We also have an article on the history of the Coastguard Cottages in Canvey (page 21). Our regular financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers provides his regular contribution (centre pages). If you want to feature any local charities or community based scheme, local sports clubs or other local activities in our Castle Point or Rayleigh guides then please get in touch at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk If you are a local business and would like to advertise in the Guide, then please contact our salesperson Ricky on 01375 402546 who will give you a no obligation quote. It really is a cost effective way of promoting your business and generating business from your local community.

Working for the Community
Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog If you think you can offer a dog a good home, the firs thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll
be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identifiction showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.
Re-Homing Update We are really pleased that both Daisy the Staffie and Bluebell the Lurcher type that we featured last time have now found new loving homes! Unfortunately, Jerry the Labrador is still currently at Acres Way awaiting a new home, so we are featuring him again this month, along with 2 new dogs needing new homes.

Money Guidance What do we actually do at Joseph Lamb’s....? It is very easy for us to forget but what we think ‘Financial Advice’ is not always not what you may think it is! The Financial Advice industry has grown out of what used to be the life assurance and insurance broking industry, but is now a very different animal indeed. Whilst everyone in it moans about the level of regulation and complying with regulation, there is no doubt at all that higher and higher levels of regulation have led to higher and higher levels of professionalism. At Lamb’s we recognised the impact this regulation would have on us right from the earliest days, so we stopped doing ‘general insurance’ as long ago as 1987, and subsequently have simplified our business model to focus on our corespecialist activities. These are now very different from the past, our business has developed into an Investment and much as I hate the phrase ‘Wealth Management’ business. We run our own investment portfolios under our Discretionary Premier Investment Monitoring Service (D-PIMS) which can apply to all aspects of your personal wealth as it can operate for your investment ISAs, pensions, unit trust portfolios and even via Life Assurance Bonds where their special tax treatment may be advantageous for some clients. We are now in the very proud position of being entrusted with looking after approaching £350,000,000 of investments on behalf of clients and are the most longstanding and largest firm in our sector in the area. The D-PIMS service operates at 6 levels of ‘risk’ from ‘low’ through to ‘very high’ so we can find a suitablelevel for just about everybody, and has been operating for nearly 14 years. The performance of the portfolios can be seen on our website where you will see that we have consistently outperformed our peers and competition, often with much lower ‘volatility’, the values don’t jump around as much as our competitors. D-PIMS keeps you up to date with your investments, we can provide on-line valuations, formal 6 monthly reports and market commentaries via e mail from our investment team as and when we make changes to our portfolios. We think that this makes our clients feel much more ‘engaged’ with their money than any other service previously experienced and we find clients become much more interested in and aware of the world’s investment markets. 14
In running the portfolios we look forward over the coming months and try to position our investments in line with what we feel are the most likely outcomes of economic and political events. We reduce risk in our portfolios if we foresee potential risk events, and this is what helps control the volatility of the service. We are always looking for areas that may provide better returns, and have an excellent track record of introducing or increasing investments in sectors just ahead of their performance increasing. As well as running your investments for you we can provide full advice around the financial planning issuesrelating to your retirement, accessing your pensions, funding pensions, (which the ‘New Rules’ have made infinitely more ttractive),saving, protecting your family and your business, cash flw planning, Trustee Investment services, and from our experience in running our own business, we can often help out with business planning and corporate decision making. Our adviser team has hundreds of years experience across all market and economic cycles, why not contact one of them to pick their brains and get some financialplanning ideas? The first consulttion is always free and we are confident tht we can add value and improve your current situation - our existing clients certainly think so as can be seen from the testimonials on our website. So, why not find out wht we do - free of charge and contact us with any financial planning quey you may have. We will do all we can to help, free of charge until we commence chargeable work for you. We will notify you before we begin any chargeable work and provide an estimate of the costs involved.

T
he Art Ministry is a charity running weekly arts and crafts groups and clubs for a wide variety of people from Essex. They focus on people who are most likely to benefit from the opportunity that being involved in creative activity provides for making friends, boosting self confidence and improving self esteem. They run arts and crafts groups and clubs for children and for adults with learning difficulties, adults with physical disabilities, partially sighted and blind adults and adults with mental health problems. They complement these core activities with a group who work with fabrics to produce items for public display, a general public art club, sessions at a nursing home, and sessions for young carers. projects and take as many opportunities as they can to exhibit works. The Art Ministry was founded in 1992. In 2004 The Art Ministry became a registered charity governed by a board of trustees according to a declaration of trust. The only employees are the 5 part time session leaders, and so they rely on about 35 volunteers, including 6 trustees, to run The Art Ministry. The students pay a nominal fee for each session that they attend. These fees go some way to meeting The Art Ministry’s costs, but the majority of their funding comes in the form of grants that they have applied for and money that they have raised ourselves. History of Castle Point
Coastguard Cottages - Canvey Island
I
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Canvey Island was a favourite haunt of smugglers which led to a coastguard station being built close to the Lobstersmack Public House. Before the Coastguard Cottages were built, what were known as “Preventive Men” were based in an old wooden vessel at Hole Haven called “Emulous.” Apparently this watch vessel was moored in 1813 and manned by Cornish, Devonian and Ulster men to protect against the smuggling which was rife Canvey at that time. The “Emulous” also had a sister ship, the “Pembcote” which was based at Leigh-on-Sea but apparently neither of them had much success in thwarting the local smuggling industry. In 1822, the Watch became the Coastguard Service and was run by the Admiralty. The admiralty bought 3 acres of land at what was known as “Drunken Marsh” on which to build the new coastguard station. The new station consisted of seven weatherboarded cottages and an officer’s house opposite the
Did you know.... • Dead Man’s Point is so-called because the body of a murdered Preventative Officer was washed ashore there. • It is rumoured that Dick Turpin hid on Canvey for a while and is said to have taken part in the local smuggling.
Lobstersmack in an ideal position for keeping a watch on the river. There was also a selection of outbuildings and an observation tower. Stationed there an officer of the Preventive Service, a chief boatman, two commissioned boatmen, four boatmen and three other men. The Admiralty also constructed a jetty and slipway on the sea wall in 1902. It is not known whether they ever caught any smugglers in the 97 years that the station was in use but, more than likely, simply the fact that they were there would have limited the smuggling activity. The Admiralty ceased to man the station in 1910 and the cottages were let to private tenants for about 3 shillings a per week. In 1924, the jetty and slipway were sold for scrap. The grounds where the coastguards worked is now a caravan park although the seven cottages remain as listed buildings.

Trustworthy Experienced Personable Clear Advice
Specialist legal advice from your local Solicitors
Do you need a Will?
If you care about who benefits from your property when you die, you do need a Will!
Throughout June we have teamed up with Havens Hospice, who specialise in caring for all ages at the end of their lives. We are offering our Will writing services at a reduced cost.
All of the money will be donated to Havens Hospice.
You benefit by a reduced rate and all of your money will be donated to the charity. Suggested donations are £90 for a single Will, £150 for Mirror Wills and £50 for a Codicil. We will be attending the roadshow on the 13th June at the Oyster Fleet Hotel, Canvey Island, between 9am and 1pm. Come and see us or ring Havens Hospice direct on 01702 221670 for an appointment, or make an appointment at our offices with our specialist Consultant Solicitor Judith Mason.
Help make every day count for all those with life limiting illnesses and benefit from our services yourself too.
We can also help you with Residential Property
