Welcome A warm welcome to the March 2018 edition of the Castle Point Local Business Guide. In March’s regular ‘What’s On in Castle Point’ on pages 16 and 17 we feature a Community Archive Drop In, a Games Club, a Poetry Reading Group, an Essex Handicraft Group Talk on ‘Wirework Jewellery’ and the Hadleigh Gardening Association Spring Fair. In our regular Acres Way feature (pages 10 and 11), we are pleased to report that Jerry the Labrador / Husky cross that we featured last time has been successfully been re-homed. Unfortunately Hattie the Terrier and Max the Lurcher are still with Acres Way. These 2 dogs can be quite challenging and so we are featuring them both once again in the hope that we can find them suitable loving homes. We also feature another deserving dog this month, Macey, who is looking for a new loving home. Within our Community section this month we feature an article on the Castle Point Association of Volunteer Services who are seeking new volunteers (page 13), an article on the History of The Roman Catholic Church on Canvey Island (page 20) and a feature on where you can get married in Essex (page 6). Our regular financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers provides his regular contribution (centre pages). If you want to feature any local charities or community based scheme, local sports clubs or other local activities in our Castle Point or Rayleigh guides then please get in touch at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk If you are a local business and would like to advertise in the Guide, then please contact our salesperson Ricky on 01375 402546 who will give you a no obligation quote. It really is a cost effective way of promoting your business and generating business from your local community.

Working for the Community
Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog If you think you can offer a dog a good home, the firs thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identifiction showing
your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.
Re-Homing Update We are pleased to report that Jerry the Labrador / Husky cross that we featured last time has been successfully been re-homed. Unfortunately Hattie the Terrier and Max the Lurcher are still with Acres Way. These 2 dogs can be quite challenging and so we are featuring them both once again in the hope that we can find them suitable loving homes.

acing challenges is part of everyday life for most, but for some families a little extra support is needed to help them manage. We require Volunteers who can spare a few hours per week, on a regular basis, to Mentor service users in the Castle Point, Rayleigh and Rochford area. You will be helping to provide ongoing emotional and practical support to family members who may be lacking in confidence or self-esteem and may need a helping hand to face daily challenges and get back on track. Volunteer Family Peer Mentors will visit clients in their own homes whilst working within CAVS boundaries. Full training, an induction and ongoing support is provided prior to starting this role. Applicants must have good parenting skills or general life experience that could help a family going through hard times, good listening skills and the ability to motivate/ encourage others. A sense of humour is vital for this role as well as being honest, reliable, patient and understanding.
Full training and on-going support will be provided by the Family Peer Mentor Coordinator. Money Guidance Don’t Forget!
It’s that time of year again. The end of the tax year. So don’t forget to have a look at your unused investment and savings tax allowances as in most cases if you miss them they are gone for good. I know I have rambled on about pensions in many previous articles but with pension freedoms giving much more post retirement flexibility, pensions are really now super tax efficient savings accounts (albeit it without access until you are 55) and the tax reliefs and concessions make them very compelling. Why so compelling? Let’s look at the maths. If you pay your pension contribution personally your contribution is paid net of basic rate tax. So a £1,000 cheque means your invested sum is £1,250 if you are a basic rate tax payer. The full £1,250 is invested (a huge range of investment options are available) and investment returns accrue tax free on the full gross amount. If you are a higher rate tax payer you enter your contribution on your tax return which effectively reduces your gross income by £1,250, and you therefore will not pay higher rate tax on £1,250, saving you £250 further tax. So your net contribution is only £750 but you have £1,250 in your pension fund. An effective ‘overnight’ return of 66.66%! If you have worked hard enough to earn over £100,000 you are being punitively taxed as every extra £2 of earnings means you lose £1 of your tax free allowance, so if you earn £123,000 you have no free tax allowance, an effective tax rate on the £23,000 of 60%! By paying a pension contribution of £23,000 (a cheque for £18,400), your assessable income is reduced back to £100,000 and you get the free tax allowance back PLUS the 20% higher rate relief. A further tax saving of £9,200! Remember that 25% of your pension can be paid tax free after the age of 55 and your pension fund is also usually exempt from Inheritance Tax. There are limits on what you can pay in each year, but pensions are unusual in that in many cases you can go back three previous tax years and use missed allowances. This is very important if, as is 14
widely expected, a future budget (this year?) reduces the tax relief available for higher rate tax payers. Don’t Forget! If you run your own business then your company can pay your pension contributions for you and any contributions get corporation tax relief with no personal tax or national insurance as long as the contribution falls within the allowed limits. I always consider pensions ahead of ISAs due to the relief available on the contribution and the IHT aspect. If you have ISAs but lack the funds to pay into your pension then why not use your ISA money and grab those reliefs whilst they are available? If you have maxed out on your pensions or you are too young to want to lose access to the money until you are 55 then don’t forget the ISA allowance is a huge £20,000 a year. Paying into ISAs each year can build up a significant fund, and as with pensions there are many investment types available within them. Why put into a cash ISA for long term savings when the interest rate is less than inflation? Even a moderately speculative portfolio held within an ISA should give a real return above inflation over the medium to long term. As well as Pensions and ISAs there are plans available for more sophisticated or less risk averse investors such as Enterprise Investment Schemes and Venture Capital Trusts that offer similar tax reliefs to pensions, but are generally more risky. So Don’t Forget! Have a look at your pension and ISA payments for the year. If you are unsure if you have used all of your allowances or just need a helping hand or explanations, the adviser team at Joseph Lamb will be only too happy to help. History of Castle Point
Canvey’s Roman Catholic Church
T
here had been for many years a strong Roman Catholic number living on Canvey Island. When, in November 1912 a priest took over the Leigh mission it included Canvey. In those days going to Mass could take a whole morning. A walk to the ferry, a trip over (or if the tide was out a walk across the stepping stones) and then a train from Benfleet, plus the whole, expedition in reverse when returning. Arrangements were made to hold Mass at the home of Mr. Levi (a Jew) and his wife (a Roman Catholic). Eventually Mr. Levi became a Catholic and his two sons Jesuits. They built a wooden hut in their garden where Father (later Canon) Francis W. Gilbert* said his weekday Mass on the dressing table. Later Mass was also said in other Island homes.*1917-1952, Parish Priest of our Lady of Lourdes
Leigh.
In September 1930, Islanders wrote to the Bishop asking for a local church. A site was generously donated in Long Road by Mr A.M. Clark. The late Mr E.E. Lawrence
designed the building which was steel framed with brick walls and with a roof of green, glazed tiles. The church could seat 400. On March 12 1937, Father Gilbert blessed the ground, sprinkled it with holy water and cut the first sod. The building was opened on Whit Monday, 1938. It was serviced from Leigh until Father John Watson took over after the war in 1947. In his trust deed Father Gilbert left £1,000 for the erection of a church and a presbytery (which has been built) on Canvey. The name of the church - Our Lady of Canvey and the English Martyr - is derived from a navigation beacon which was known as the “Canvey Lady.” There were two of these beacons on the Island - one at Thorney Bay and one in the Leigh Beck area. The image to the left shows the Canvey Lady at Thorney Bay Army Camp. It was “a beacon with a diamond shaped head surmounted by a ball; elevated at 58 feet.” .
