Welcome A warm welcome to the April 2018 edition of the Castle Point Local Business Guide. Over Easter the weather was very poor, rain, rain and more rain! However, better Spring weather is on it’s way and we feature some lovely walks for you and your family to get out and enjoy the local environment in our article on Spring Walks (page 6). In our regular ‘What’s On in Castle Point’ on pages 16 and 17 we feature a talk on the Dissolution of the Monastries in Essex, a Bowls taster session, a wine and cheese tasting evening, the Westwood Art Group Spring Exhibition and a Spring Garden Fete. Plenty for everyone to enjoy! In our regular Acres Way feature (pages 10 and 11), we are really pleased that Hattie the Terrier, Max the Lurcher and Macey the Jack Russell cross that we featured last time have all found loving homes. That is really great news! We feature 3 lovely new dogs that require new homes this month. Within our Community section this month we focus in on the History of Castle Point. We have articles about the history of the stepping stones in Canvey (page 8), the history of Hadleigh Farm (page 13), legends of ghosts in the Castle Point area (page 20) and War Time Castle Point (page 24). Our regular financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers provides his regular contribution (centre pages). If you want to feature any local charities or community based scheme, local sports clubs or other local activities in our Castle Point or Rayleigh guides then please get in touch at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk If you are a local business and would like to advertise in the Guide, then please contact our salesperson Ricky on 01375 402546 who will give you a no obligation quote. It really is a cost effective way of promoting your business and generating business from your local community.

History of Castle Point

Stepping Stones

F

or centuries, the only ways of getting to Canvey Island from the mainland was by using stepping stones on an area known as “Benfleet Hard” or, at high tide, by a small ferry boat that operated throughout the year. The ferry was available day or night and passengers would pay a penny for the crossing - with an extra half penny if you had a bike. It operated in all weathers and at any time of day or night.

following year by Alderman J.H. Burrows. The day was a public holiday and children and their families crowded the area to follow the cars and members of the Canvey Chamber of Commerce across the newly opened bridge. Luncheon of Roast Chicken, York Ham, Ox Tail and Veal and Ham pie was served by the Canvey Island Urban Council to the visiting dignitary.

In the late 1920s, it was agreed that a permanent way of crossing the creek was becoming essential. The first pile of the new bridge was driven into the river bed on 21st May 1930 at a special “Pile Driving Ceremony” carried out by the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, BrigadierGeneral Colvin. The bridge, named “Colvin Bridge” in his honour, cost £15,000 to build and was opened the 8

Working for the Community

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog If you think you can offer a dog a good home, the firs thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll

be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identifiction showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.

Re-Homing Update We are really pleased that Hattie the Terrier, Max the Lurcher and Macey the Jack Russell cross that we featured last time have all found loving homes. That is really great news!

History of Castle Point

Hadleigh Farm

H

adleigh Farm was originally part of William Booth’s “Darkest England” scheme. This involved people from what he referred to as the, “submerged tenth” being helped and in some cases rescued by Salvationists. His vision was that the poor would be given board and lodgings in a City Colony in exchange for a day’s work. They could then move to a Farm Colony where they would be trained to work the land and run their own smallholdings. Then finally they could progress to Overseas Colonies, running smallholdings abroad. The trial City Colony was set up in Whitechapel in 1889 and two years later Booth put down a deposit on land in Hadleigh for his Farm Colony. Starting with 800 acres (3.2 km2) of land, later expanding to 3,200 acres (13 km2), the farm was home to 200 colonists by the end of its first year. Existing farm buildings were renovated and new dormitories, a bathhouse, laundry, reading room, hospital and religious meeting house were built. As well as farming and market gardening, colonists were taught brickmaking, pottery and construction skills. With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 the British government agreed to look after a number of Basque refugee children. Some of these children ended up under the Salvation Army’s care in East London and at Hadleigh. In 1939 the farm also provided accommodation for nearly 70 Jewish refugees fleeing

persecution in Germany and Eastern Europe. Today the colony operates an employment training centre for people who have special training needs, and accepts referrals from Social Services and the Employment Service. The aim is to create a realistic working environment, with the intention of helping clients gain the skills necessary for work elsewhere. Employment at the training centre – reminiscent of the colony’s origins - includes horticulture, carpentry, catering, office skills and estate management.

Money Guidance What do we actually do at Joseph Lamb’s....? It is very easy for us to forget but what we think ‘Financial Advice’ is not always not what you may think it is! The Financial Advice industry has grown out of what used to be the life assurance and insurance broking industry, but is now a very different animal indeed. Whilst everyone in it moans about the level of regulation and complying with regulation, there is no doubt at all that higher and higher levels of regulation have led to higher and higher levels of professionalism. At Lamb’s we recognised the impact this regulation would have on us right from the earliest days, so we stopped doing ‘general insurance’ as long ago as 1987, and subsequently have simplified our business model to focus on our corespecialist activities. These are now very different from the past, our business has developed into an Investment and much as I hate the phrase ‘Wealth Management’ business. We run our own investment portfolios under our Discretionary Premier Investment Monitoring Service (D-PIMS) which can apply to all aspects of your personal wealth as it can operate for your investment ISAs, pensions, unit trust portfolios and even via Life Assurance Bonds where their special tax treatment may be advantageous for some clients. We are now in the very proud position of being entrusted with looking after approaching £350,000,000 of investments on behalf of clients and are the most longstanding and largest firm in our sector in the area. The D-PIMS service operates at 6 levels of ‘risk’ from ‘low’ through to ‘very high’ so we can find a suitablelevel for just about everybody, and has been operating for nearly 14 years. The performance of the portfolios can be seen on our website where you will see that we have consistently outperformed our peers and competition, often with much lower ‘volatility’, the values don’t jump around as much as our competitors. D-PIMS keeps you up to date with your investments, we can provide on-line valuations, formal 6 monthly reports and market commentaries via e mail from our investment team as and when we make changes to our portfolios. We think that this makes our clients feel much more ‘engaged’ with their money than any other service previously experienced and we find clients become much more interested in and aware of the world’s investment markets. 14

In running the portfolios we look forward over the coming months and try to position our investments in line with what we feel are the most likely outcomes of economic and political events. We reduce risk in our portfolios if we foresee potential risk events, and this is what helps control the volatility of the service. We are always looking for areas that may provide better returns, and have an excellent track record of introducing or increasing investments in sectors just ahead of their performance increasing. As well as running your investments for you we can provide full advice around the financial planning issuesrelating to your retirement, accessing your pensions, funding pensions, (which the ‘New Rules’ have made infinitely more ttractive),saving, protecting your family and your business, cash flw planning, Trustee Investment services, and from our experience in running our own business, we can often help out with business planning and corporate decision making. Our adviser team has hundreds of years experience across all market and economic cycles, why not contact one of them to pick their brains and get some financialplanning ideas? The first consulttion is always free and we are confident tht we can add value and improve your current situation - our existing clients certainly think so as can be seen from the testimonials on our website. So, why not find out wht we do - free of charge and contact us with any financial planning quey you may have. We will do all we can to help, free of charge until we commence chargeable work for you. We will notify you before we begin any chargeable work and provide an estimate of the costs involved.

Ghost Stories From Castle Point E

very town boasts its share of ghostly sightings and spooky stories scary enough to send a shiver up the bravest of spines. Unsurprisingly, Castle Point area is no exception.

by Lady Hamilton, lover of Lord Horatio Nelson. The ancient building certainly has an eerie feel about it and stories of Lady Hamilton patrolling the rooms and corridors of the 16th-century building in search of her hero are well known to members. Legend has it that Nelson used the building as a secret meeting place for romantic liaisons whenever he was back from his she’s still there or so tales and sightings of the ghostly lady who died in 1815 at the age of 50 would have us believe. Hadleigh castle has had a varied history and many ghost stories have been told about the place. During the 19th century, secret chambers in the ruins of the castle were supposed to have been used by smugglers to hide their ill-gotten gains. They would have got to the castle mostly from the river. They burned coloured lights and made strange noises to frighten away nosy locals. It was also during this time that the castle got a reputation for being haunted by a woman in white. A milkmaid called Sally, from Castle Farm, saw the ghostly woman early one morning. The ghost commanded Sally to meet her again at the castle at midnight. But the girl was too frightened to go. She was met the next morning by the ghostly woman, who was so annoyed that she had been disobeyed that she hit the milkmaid around the head, almost dislocating her neck. After this, the girl was known as “wry-neck Sal.” 20

Another “ghost” in the Hadleigh area is that of James “Cunning” Murrel, a local wise man who could break witches curses, cure disease and see into the future. His spirit is still seen on the Hadleigh Downs picking herbs for his potions, some times followed by dancing blue lights. In the 19th century, a farm labourer and boy were

The screams were heard until the murderer confessed to his crime to drinkers in the White Hart pub.. It is believed that Canvey Island has it’s very own Viking ghost. History of Castle Point

War Time Castle Point

D

uring the Second World War, Castle Point played a significant part in the country’s defensive strategy and the position of Canvey Island, overlooking the Thames estuary, made it a perfect place from which to defend against invasion. Canvey Island was part of what was known as the GHQ Line. (General Headquarters Line) This was one of over 50 defence lines built in the United Kingdom to contain an expected German invasion. Following the Dunkirk evacuation, when the British Army had abandoned most of its equipment in France, it was decided that a static system of defensive lines around England should be built of which the GHQ Line was the longest and most important as it was designed to protect London. On the section of the line in Essex that ran between Great Chesterford and Canvey Island, the defences were made up of around 400 concrete pillboxes. These were dug-in guard posts made from concrete with loopholes through which to fire weapons. They are in effect a trench firing step hardened to protect against smallarms fire and grenades and raised to improve the field of fire. South Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersley and Daws Heath were all on the route from Southend-on-Sea to London so it was particularly important that these areas provided the means by which to stop invaders getting through to the capital. To counter the sea-borne threat, two 6-inch naval guns which had first been installed during World War One were re-activated at Deadman’s Point on Canvey Island. At night, coastal artillery searchlights swept the 24

river from emplacements alongside the guns. Close by, at Scars Elbow Point, quick-firing 6-pounder guns which could fire at over 100 rounds per minute waited to stop any forays by torpedo boats. North of Benfleet Creek, the towns were fortified by road barriers of concrete and steel with pillboxes and infantry positions covering all the major access routes. Essex was home to around 40 heavy anti-aircraft gun sites, four of which were in Castle Point. Two were located on Canvey Island one in Hadleigh and another at Jotman’s Hall. From these, 3.7 inch and 4.5inch guns could launch their shells well over 20,000 feet into the sky. Later, Hadleigh was equipped with even larger 5.25-inch guns which were capable of reaching up to an astonishing 40,000 feet. The remains of the World War 2 Heavy Anti-Aircraft gun site based at Sandpit Hill, Hadleigh can still be seen today. 30 structures can still be identified on the site including a rare Operations Room / Generator Block. During and after World War Two, the site at Hadleigh was a complex site of gun emplacements, ancillary buildings and structures and accommodation huts.
