Welcome A warm welcome to the June 2018 edition of the Rayleigh Local Business Guide. Recently we’ve had some better weather and have all had a chance to get out and about. It’s a good time to get down on the farm and this month we feature some of Essex’s lovely farms for you and your family to visit in our article on page 6. In our regular ‘What’s On in Rayleigh’ on page 16 you can get down to the true spirit of the 60s and 70s with a night of music by Johnny Warman’s Magic Bus and if you like painting or want to develop your skills you can attend a watercolour painting workshop with Susan Clare, SAA Professional Artist of the Year 2016. In our regular Acres Way feature (pages 10 and 11), we are really pleased that both Daisy the Staffie and Bluebell the Lurcher type that we featured last time have now found new loving homes! Unfortunately, Jerry the Labrador is still currently at Acres Way awaiting a new home, so we are featuring him again this month, along with 2 new dogs needing new homes. Within our Community section this month we feature an article on the History of the Parish Church of Holy Trinity which has a history going back to 1380 (page 21) and an article on the Rayleigh Town Museum (page 24) with details of their new exhibitions. We also have our regular column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers (centre pages). If you want to feature any local charities or community based scheme, local sports clubs or other local activities in our Castle Point or Rayleigh guides then please get in touch at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk

Working for the Community

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog If you think you can offer a dog a good home, the firs thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll

be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identifiction showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.

Re-Homing Update We are really pleased that both Daisy the Staffie and Bluebell the Lurcher type that we featured last time have now found new loving homes! Unfortunately, Jerry the Labrador is still currently at Acres Way awaiting a new home, so we are featuring him again this month, along with 2 new dogs needing new homes.

This Month’s Featured Dogs

Jerry

- Labrador Aged 2-3 years Loves : Jerry loves lots of long walks and is very affectionate towards his owners. Looking for : Very experienced owners that know how to handle a larger dog. Not to go with children as he can be unpredictable and nervous of new people. Would need to do a meet and greet if he is to live with another dog.

Bear

- Rottweiler Cross  Aged 4 years

Loves : His food. Looking for : Bear is a lovely lad and a gentle giant. He can be very nervous of new people but once he knows you he becomes your best friend. He wouldn’t be suitable with children and would need to meet other animals within the household if he needed to live with other pets

Oscar

- Boxer Cross Aged 2 years Loves : Lots of play time. Looking for : Oscar will need an experienced dog owner as he is deaf. He responds well to hand commands and enjoys human contact. He is ok with other dogs but wouldn’t be able to live with another as he can be quite jealous.

Money Guidance What do we actually do at Joseph Lamb’s....? It is very easy for us to forget but what we think ‘Financial Advice’ is not always not what you may think it is! The Financial Advice industry has grown out of what used to be the life assurance and insurance broking industry, but is now a very different animal indeed. Whilst everyone in it moans about the level of regulation and complying with regulation, there is no doubt at all that higher and higher levels of regulation have led to higher and higher levels of professionalism. At Lamb’s we recognised the impact this regulation would have on us right from the earliest days, so we stopped doing ‘general insurance’ as long ago as 1987, and subsequently have simplified our business model to focus on our corespecialist activities. These are now very different from the past, our business has developed into an Investment and much as I hate the phrase ‘Wealth Management’ business. We run our own investment portfolios under our Discretionary Premier Investment Monitoring Service (D-PIMS) which can apply to all aspects of your personal wealth as it can operate for your investment ISAs, pensions, unit trust portfolios and even via Life Assurance Bonds where their special tax treatment may be advantageous for some clients. We are now in the very proud position of being entrusted with looking after approaching £350,000,000 of investments on behalf of clients and are the most longstanding and largest firm in our sector in the area. The D-PIMS service operates at 6 levels of ‘risk’ from ‘low’ through to ‘very high’ so we can find a suitablelevel for just about everybody, and has been operating for nearly 14 years. The performance of the portfolios can be seen on our website where you will see that we have consistently outperformed our peers and competition, often with much lower ‘volatility’, the values don’t jump around as much as our competitors. D-PIMS keeps you up to date with your investments, we can provide on-line valuations, formal 6 monthly reports and market commentaries via e mail from our investment team as and when we make changes to our portfolios. We think that this makes our clients feel much more ‘engaged’ with their money than any other service previously experienced and we find clients become much more interested in and aware of the world’s investment markets. 14

In running the portfolios we look forward over the coming months and try to position our investments in line with what we feel are the most likely outcomes of economic and political events. We reduce risk in our portfolios if we foresee potential risk events, and this is what helps control the volatility of the service. We are always looking for areas that may provide better returns, and have an excellent track record of introducing or increasing investments in sectors just ahead of their performance increasing. As well as running your investments for you we can provide full advice around the financial planning issuesrelating to your retirement, accessing your pensions, funding pensions, (which the ‘New Rules’ have made infinitely more ttractive),saving, protecting your family and your business, cash flw planning, Trustee Investment services, and from our experience in running our own business, we can often help out with business planning and corporate decision making. Our adviser team has hundreds of years experience across all market and economic cycles, why not contact one of them to pick their brains and get some financialplanning ideas? The first consulttion is always free and we are confident tht we can add value and improve your current situation - our existing clients certainly think so as can be seen from the testimonials on our website. So, why not find out wht we do - free of charge and contact us with any financial planning quey you may have. We will do all we can to help, free of charge until we commence chargeable work for you. We will notify you before we begin any chargeable work and provide an estimate of the costs involved.

Rayleigh Town Museum ayleigh Town Museum is housed on the first R floor of the oldest secular building in the town. Part of the building dates back to c1350. It is thought that the building was once a fever hospital as the Black Death was prevalent at this time. The building known as Commerce House, is grade 2 listed and situated in Rayleigh’s conservation area. The oldest part of the current building is the section nearest the Spread Eagle pub. Previous occupants of the building include Algernon Law, George Belcham, Arthur Webb and Percy Devenson, the Gas Light and Coke Co. (North Thames Gas Board), Sansoms the wellknown gentlemen’s outfitters and more recently Yours clothing. Rayleigh Town Museum took over the building in 2016, and has now been open for 2 years. We have welcomed over 17,000 visitors to date. The museum is entirely run by volunteers who work hard to ensure that visitors have an enjoyable and interesting experience. In 2018 we have several new exhibitions taking place. We have already held a display of paintings by local artists, and to commemorate the Suffragette movement we had an exhibition in March, which detailed the Rayleigh connection to the Suffragettes, along with much more information. We are currently hosting an Exhibition on The Titanic. 24

Upcoming exhibitions include the 70th Anniversary of the opening of Rayleigh Speedway, the Rayleigh Trinity Fair, Medieval Life, History of Maps and to commemorate the end of WW1 we will hold an exhibition in November, which will detail the men of Rayleigh who fought in the Great War. For more information visit our web site. As well as the exhibitions we have an extensive collection of postcards, books, trophies, medals and local artefacts. The museum is open on Wednesday/Friday/ Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm. Entry to the museum and exhibitions is free. 1st Floor, 91 High Street, Rayleigh SS6 7EJ www.rayleightownmuseum.co.uk
