Welcome A warm welcome to the March 2018 edition of the Rayleigh Local Business Guide. In our ‘What’s On in Rayleigh’ section on page 16 we feature a poker night, a Tea Dance and an afternoon of Bingo. What more could you want to cheer yourself up after the poor March weather ! In our regular Acres Way feature (pages 10 and 11), we are pleased to report that Jerry the Labrador / Husky cross that we featured last time has been successfully been re-homed. Unfortunately Hattie the Terrier and Max the Lurcher are still with Acres Way. These 2 dogs can be quite challenging and so we are featuring them both once again in the hope that we can find them suitable loving homes. We also feature another deserving dog this month, Macey, who is looking for a new loving home. Within our Community section this month we feature an article on the Rayleigh, Rochford and District Association for Voluntary Service, an umbrella organisation representing the interests of all voluntary and charitable groups in the Rochford District (page 6). We also feature an article on the History of Rayleigh Mount (page 21) and an article on where you can get married in Essex (page 9). We also have our regular column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers (centre pages). If you want to feature any local charities or community based scheme, local sports clubs or other local activities in our Castle Point or Rayleigh guides then please get in touch at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk If you are a local business and would like to advertise in the Guide, then please contact our salesperson Ricky on 01375 402546 who will give you a no obligation quote. Working for the Community

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog If you think you can offer a dog a good home, the firs thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identifiction showing

your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.

Re-Homing Update We are pleased to report that Jerry the Labrador / Husky cross that we featured last time has been successfully been re-homed. Unfortunately Hattie the Terrier and Max the Lurcher are still with Acres Way. Money Guidance Don’t Forget!

It’s that time of year again. The end of the tax year. So don’t forget to have a look at your unused investment and savings tax allowances as in most cases if you miss them they are gone for good. I know I have rambled on about pensions in many previous articles but with pension freedoms giving much more post retirement flexibility, pensions are really now super tax efficient savings accounts (albeit it without access until you are 55) and the tax reliefs and concessions make them very compelling. Why so compelling? Let’s look at the maths. If you pay your pension contribution personally your contribution is paid net of basic rate tax. So a £1,000 cheque means your invested sum is £1,250 if you are a basic rate tax payer. The full £1,250 is invested (a huge range of investment options are available) and investment returns accrue tax free on the full gross amount. If you are a higher rate tax payer you enter your contribution on your tax return which effectively reduces your gross income by £1,250, and you therefore will not pay higher rate tax on £1,250, saving you £250 further tax. So your net contribution is only £750 but you have £1,250 in your pension fund. An effective ‘overnight’ return of 66.66%! If you have worked hard enough to earn over £100,000 you are being punitively taxed as every extra £2 of earnings means you lose £1 of your tax free allowance, so if you earn £123,000 you have no free tax allowance, an effective tax rate on the £23,000 of 60%! By paying a pension contribution of £23,000 (a cheque for £18,400), your assessable income is reduced back to £100,000 and you get the free tax allowance back PLUS the 20% higher rate relief. A further tax saving of £9,200! Remember that 25% of your pension can be paid tax free after the age of 55 and your pension fund is also usually exempt from Inheritance Tax. There are limits on what you can pay in each year, but pensions are unusual in that in many cases you can go back three previous tax years and use missed allowances. This is very important if, as is 14

widely expected, a future budget (this year?) reduces the tax relief available for higher rate tax payers. Don’t Forget! If you run your own business then your company can pay your pension contributions for you and any contributions get corporation tax relief with no personal tax or national insurance as long as the contribution falls within the allowed limits. I always consider pensions ahead of ISAs due to the relief available on the contribution and the IHT aspect. If you have ISAs but lack the funds to pay into your pension then why not use your ISA money and grab those reliefs whilst they are available? If you have maxed out on your pensions or you are too young to want to lose access to the money until you are 55 then don’t forget the ISA allowance is a huge £20,000 a year. Paying into ISAs each year can build up a significant fund, and as with pensions there are many investment types available within them. Why put into a cash ISA for long term savings when the interest rate is less than inflation? Even a moderately speculative portfolio held within an ISA should give a real return above inflation over the medium to long term. As well as Pensions and ISAs there are plans available for more sophisticated or less risk averse investors such as Enterprise Investment Schemes and Venture Capital Trusts that offer similar tax reliefs to pensions, but are generally more risky. So Don’t Forget! Have a look at your pension and ISA payments for the year. If you are unsure if you have used all of your allowances or just need a helping hand or explanations, the adviser team at Joseph Lamb will be only too happy to help. Martin Lamb, Dip.PFS Certs CII (MP & ER) This article does not constitute advice and readers should seek an assessment of their needs and requirements before making any decisions based on the content of this article. The value of investments can go down as well as up and past performance is not a guide to future returns.

Rayleigh Castle (Rayleigh Mount)

R

ayleigh Castle (also known as Rayleigh Mount) was a masonry and timber castle built in the 11th century shortly after the Norman conquest. All that exists today are the earthwork remains of its large motte-and-bailey. Rayleigh is one of 48 castles mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086 and the only one in Essex. The Survey shows that the castle was built by Swein - the son of Robert FitzWimarc (other spellings are Sweyn, Sweyne, and Suen.) FitzWimarc was a Norman lord and favourite of Edward the Confessor and Swein was one of the wealthiest landowners in post-Conquest Essex. Most land owners with significant holdings at the time of the Domesday Survey had disjointed, scattered properties however Swein was one of the exceptions and most of his land was within the hundreds of Rochford and Barstable with Rayleigh Castle as the administrative centre. When Swein died the castle passed to his son Robert de Essex and thento his grandson Henry d’Essex. Henry was accused of cowardice in battle in 1163

and subject to a trial by combat which he lost. The castle and it’s estates were confiscated to become the property of the king, Henry II. The property was then given by King John to Hubert de Burgh in around 1200 who probably used it as a source of building materials for the castle which he started building in 1230 at Hadleigh. On the death of Hubert’s son in the latter half of the 13th century, ownership of the castle reverted to the Crown. In 1394 King Richard II gave permission for the townspeople of Rayleigh to use the foundations of the castle as a source of stone. Since the foundations are explicitly mentioned in the document giving permission, it is unlikely that any other masonry structures remained by then. The site of the castle was used for grazing sheep after it fell into disuse. www.thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk
